Abstract Employing the standard solar interior model as input we construct a dynamically-consistent nonlinear dynamo model that takes into account the detailed description of the Λ - effect, turbulent pumping, magnetic helicity balance, and magnetic feedback on the differential rotation and meridional circulation. The background mean-field hydrodynamic model of the solar convection zone accounts the solar-like angular velocity profile and the double-cell meridional circulation. We investigate an impact of the nonlinear magnetic field generation effects on the long-term variability and properties of the magnetic cycle. The nonlinear dynamo solutions are studied in the wide interval of the α effect parameter from a slightly subcritical to supercritical values. It is found that the magnetic cycle period decreases with the increasing cycle's magnitude. The periodic long-term variations of the magnetic cycle are excited in case of the overcritical α effect. These variations result from the hemispheric magnetic helicity exchange. It depends on the magnetic diffusivity parameter and the magnetic helicity production rate. The large-scale magnetic activity modifies the distribution of the differential rotation and meridional circulation inside convection zone. It is found that the magnetic feedback on the global flow affects the properties of the long-term magnetic cycles. We confront our findings with solar and stellar magnetic activity observations. To investigate the differential rotation of sunspot groups using the Greenwich data, we propose an approach based on a statistical analysis of the histograms of particular longitudinal velocities in different latitude intervals. The general statistical velocity distributions for all such intervals are shown to be described by two rather than one normal distribution, so that two fundamental rotation modes exist simultaneously: fast and slow. The differentiality of rotation for the modes is the same: the coefficient at sin2 in Faye’s law is 2.87-2.88 deg/day, while the equatorial rotation rates differ significantly, 0.27 deg/day. On the other hand, an analysis of the longitudinal velocities for the previously revealed two differing populations of sunspot groups has shown that small short-lived groups (SSGs) are associated with the fast rotation mode, while large long-lived groups (LLGs) are associated with both fast and slow modes. The results obtained not only suggest a real physical difference between the two populations of sunspots but also give new empirical data for the development of a dynamo theory, in particular, for the theory of a spatially distributed dynamo. Modern models of nonlinear dynamo saturation in celestial bodies (specifically, on the Sun) are largely based on the consideration of the balance of magnetic helicity. This physical variable has also a topological meaning: it is associated with the linking coefficient of magnetic tubes. In addition to magnetic helicity, magnetohydrodynamics has a number of topological integrals of motion (the so-called higher helicity moments). We have compared these invariants with magnetic helicity properties and concluded that they can hardly serve as nonlinear constraints on dynamo action. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT The transfer of magnetic chirality in solar active regions is related to the emerging magnetic flux ropes generated in the subatmosphere. This analysis has been presented based on the calculation of the injection of magnetic helicity at the solar surface. As the long-term evolution of the accumulated magnetic helicity is followed, it is found that the transfer of reversal magnetic helicity of active regions is a complex process, and is not monotonic with the same sign. It is found that the dominant contribution of helicity occurs mainly in the fast-developing stage of active regions. By considering the hemispheric trends of magnetic helicity, it is proposed that the reversal helicity in solar active regions has two possible causes: local generation in the convection zone, and trans-equatorial processes in the subatmosphere. In addition to the mirror-symmetrical reverse of twisted magnetic field in the convection zone, the possibility of a trans-equatorial process is discussed in this paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The spatial (latitude) distribution of sunspots is studied, including its dependence on solar activity. It is shown that the latitude distributions of sunspots for a given year can be approximately described by the normal law, with its variance being a linear function of the current level of solar activity. Thus, an increase in activity is accompanied by an expansion of the zone of solar activity, in good agreement with earlier results. As the solar activity increases, the width of the zone of sunspot generation and the latitude maximum of the sunspot density grow somewhat more slowly than the number of sunspots, in agreement with observations. The results obtained can be used to reconstruct the spatial distributions of sunspots in the past, interpret the magnetic activity of stars, and address the requirements of the dynamo theory in the form of constraints imposed on models of cyclicity. During the last few years the Sun and solar wind have shown a behavior that was so unexpected that the phenomena was described as 'the strange solar minimum'. It has been speculated that the 23/24 solar cycle minimum may have indicated the onset of a Maunder-Minimum-type Grand Minimum. Here we review what is known from 1500 years of proxy data about Maunder-type Grand Minima and the minima of the cyclic Centennial Gleissberg variations. We generate criteria that distinguish between the two types of event. Applying these criteria to the observed solar terrestrial data we conclude that the unexpected behavior began well before the solar cycle 23/24 minimum. The data do not support the Maunder Minimum conjecture. However, the behavior can be understood as a minimum of the Centennial Gleissberg Cycle that previously minimized in the beginning of the 20th century. We conclude that the Centennial Gleissberg Cycle is a persistent variation that has been present 80% of the time during the last 1500 years and should be explained by solar dynamo theory. Abstract: This review provides an introduction to the generation and evolution of the Sun’s magnetic field, summarising both observational evidence and theoretical models. The eleven year solar cycle, which is well known from a variety of observed quantities, strongly supports the idea of a large-scale solar dynamo. Current theoretical ideas on the location and mechanism of this dynamo are presented. The solar cycle influences the behaviour of the global coronal magnetic field and it is the eruptions of this field that can impact on the Earth’s environment. These global coronal variations can be modelled to a surprising degree of accuracy. Recent high resolution observations of the Sun’s magnetic field in quiet regions, away from sunspots, show that there is a continual evolution of a small-scale magnetic field, presumably produced by small-scale dynamo action in the solar interior. Sunspots, a natural consequence of the large-scale dynamo, emerge, evolve and disperse over a period of several days. Numerical simulations can help to determine the physical processes governing the emergence of sunspots. We discuss the interaction of these emerging fields with the pre-existing coronal field, resulting in a variety of dynamic phenomena. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The unexpected development of cycle 24 emphasizes the need for a better way to model future solar activity. In this article, we analyze the accumulation of spotless days during individual cycles from 1798 - 2010. The analysis shows that spotless days do not disappear abruptly in the transition toward an active Sun. A comparison with past cycles indicates that the ongoing accumulation of spotless days is comparable to that of cycle 5 near the Dalton minimum and to that of cycles 12, 14, and 15. It also suggests that the ongoing cycle has as much as 20±8 spotless days left, from July 2010, before it reaches the next solar maximum. The last spotless day is predicted to be in December 2012, with an uncertainty of 11 months. This trend may serve as input to the solar dynamo theories. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The behavior of dynamo waves in a two-layer medium is investigated in terms of the Parker dynamo model. The solar cycle duration is shown to depend on the ratio of turbulent diffusivities in the layers. Meridional circulation has been incorporated into the Parker system. An increase in the intensity of meridional flows is shown to decelerate the propagation of dynamo waves. The minimum of solar magnetic activity can occur not only in the case of intense meridional circulation in both layers but also when a difference in physical characteristics arises between the layers and the meridional flows are moderate. Two systems of Lorenz-type equations modelling solar magnetic activity are studied: Firstly a low order dynamic system in which the toroidal and poloidal fields are represented by x- and y-coordinates respectively, and the hydrodynamical information is given by the z coordinate. Secondly a complex generalization of the three ordinary differential equations studied by Lorenz. By studying the Poincaré map we give numerical evidence that the flow has an attractor with fractal structure. The period is defined as the time needed for a point on a hyperplane to return to the hyperplane again. The periods are distributed in an interval. For large values of the Dynamo number there is a long tail toward long periods and other interesting comet-like features. These general relations found for periods can further be physically interpreted with improved helioseismic estimates of the parameters used by the dynamical systems. Abstract: The differential rotation of the solar corona has been analyzed using as the input data the brightness of the coronal green line Fe xiv 530.3nm for more than five activity cycles. It is found that the character of rotation of the solar corona changes during the activity cycle. Approximately at the middle of the descending branch the differential rotation is weakly pronounced, while the greatest differential gradient is observed at the ascending branch and, occasionally, at the maximum of the cycle. An explanation of this difference has been suggested. The total rotation rate of the corona can be represented as a superposition of two rotation modes (components) – the fast and slow ones. The synodic period of the fast mode near the equator is about 27 days, increasing slightly with latitude. The synodic period of the slow mode exceeds 30 days. The changing relative fraction of these two modes results in variation of the latitude dependence of the observed rotation rate during the activity cycle. The characteristics of two principal types of differential rotation of the solar corona have been determined. The first type consists of the fast mode alone and is established approximately at the middle of the descending branch of the cycle. The second type is the sum of both modes with the fast mode dominating at low latitudes and the slow mode at high latitudes. As we resolve ever smaller structures in the solar atmosphere, it has become clear that magnetism is an important component of those small structures. Small-scale magnetism holds the key to many poorly understood facets of solar magnetism on all scales, such as the existence of a local dynamo, chromospheric heating, and flux emergence, to name a few. Here, we review our knowledge of small-scale photospheric fields, with particular emphasis on quiet-sun field, and discuss the implications of several results obtained recently using new instruments, as well as future prospects in this field of research. A comparison between the two tracers of magnetic field mirror asymmetry in solar active regions – twist and current helicity – is presented. It is shown that for individual active regions these tracers do not possess visible similarity but averaging by time over the solar cycle, or by latitude, reveals similarities in their behavior. The main property of the data set is antisymmetry over the solar equator. Considering the evolution of helical properties over the solar cycle we find signatures of a possible sign change at the beginning of the cycle, though more systematic observational data are required for a definite confirmation. We consider a conventional stellar -dynamo with dynamo generators localized in two spherical shells separated by a passive layer. The signs of the α-effect as well as rotational shear in the dynamo active layers can be chosen to give dynamo waves that propagate in opposite directions (poleward and equatorward) if the layers are considered separately in the framework of the Parker migratory dynamo. In a sequence of numerical experiments we show that the variety of dynamo-generated magnetic configurations in the system under discussion is quite rich. We identify the possibility of almost independent dynamo waves existing in the two layers as well as enslavement of one layer by the other, and of activity waves generated by a joint action of the two layers. We suggest some qualitative explanations of the behaviour and discuss also the limited nature of these explanations. This variety of phenomena suggests previously underexploited freedoms to understand how predictions of dynamo theory may accommodate the observed solar and stellar activity phenomenology. Abstract: The Solar Magnetic Field Telescope (SMFT) at the Huairou Solar Observing Station of the National Astronomical Observatory has been obtaining photospheric vector magnetograms on a daily basis for more than 20years. In this paper we first introduce our magnetograph and our data reduction routine. Then we focus on what we can learn from these vector magnetic field measurements about the magnetic non-potentiality of active regions. Derived physical quantities, such as shear angle, α value and current helicity, are good indicators of magnetic helicity. By studying values and evolutions of these physical quantities, we get a glimpse of the dynamo process in the solar interior. By examining the evolution of these quantities we can also learn what are the favorable conditions for coronal eruptions such as flares and coronal mass ejections. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A simple nonlinear model which describes the 1 1-year solar cycle can be derived from the usual α - ω dynamo theory in the form of a Van der Pol equation. Solar activity displays also small- scale inter-cycle persistent stochastic oscillations with a Hurst exponent of the order of H ... 0.76 ± 0.01.
