With the short-term exposure to Fe 2+ , the mechanism of autotrophic denitrification and sulfide oxidation and the correlation between microbial community changes and environmental factors have been explored in the ADSOB process. RSM was used to optimize conditions for the maximum nitrate reduction and sulfide oxidation. About 88% of nitrate could be autotrophically denitrified to nitrogen by utilizing sulfide as the electron donor with the molar ratio C/N of 1.14 and S/N of 0.99 at pH 7.1. Lower Fe 2+ additions can reduce TDS inhibition with dissolved sulfide to form FeS precipitates, while high amount of Fe 2+ limited the mass transfer of NO 3 - and intermediate products such as S 0 may be generated. High-throughput sequencing and RDA analysis revealed the correlation between ferrous iron, environmental factors and microorganisms. Sulfurospirillum, Rhodanobacter, Thauera and Thiobacillus were all slightly promoted at NFL level and inhibited at NFH level. And the narrow angles of the arrows indicated that Thauera, Sulfurospirillum and Thiobacillus were positively correlated with SO 4 2- concentrations, while large angles indicated these bacteria were inversely related with TDS and NO 3 - arrows, which further confirmed that these bacteria played a dominant role in the ADSOB process, and can reduce NO 3 - by the oxidation of TDS. A two-photon fluorescent probe for Cu 2+ and S 2- has been strategically prepared with naphthalimide derivative platform (NPE) covalently grafted onto the surface of magnetic core-shell Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 nanoparticles. The probe (NPE-Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 ) exhibits selective response to Cu 2+ with enhanced fluorescence and efficient separation of Cu 2+ with external magnetic field. The consequent product NPE-Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -Cu of NPE-Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 and Cu 2+ can work as an excellent sensor for S 2- by removing Cu 2+ from the complex with fluorescence decreased, recovering the fluorescence of the probe. Therefore, the constituted Off-On-Off type fluorescence monitoring system means the probe is resumable. Moreover, the probe has been used to quantitatively detect Cu 2+ and S 2- with low detection limits, which are 0.28 μM and 0.12 μM, respectively. Furthermore, the probe shows low cytotoxicity and excellent membrane permeability, which has been successfully applied for monitoring Cu 2+ and S 2- in living cells and imaging Cu 2+ in deep-tissue with two-photon excited fluorescence., (Copyright © 2018. Lignin structural studies play an essential role both in understanding the development of plant cell walls and for valorizing lignocellulosics as renewable biomaterials. Dimeric products released by selectively cleaving β-aryl ether linkages between lignin units reflect the distribution of recalcitrant lignin units, but have been neither absolutely defined nor quantitatively determined. Here, 12 guaiacyl-type thioacidolysis dimers were identified and quantified using newly synthesized standards. One product previously attributed to deriving from β-1-coupled units was established as resulting from β-5 units, correcting an analytical quandary. Another longstanding dilemma, that no β-β dimers were recognized in thioacidolysis products from gymnosperms, was resolved with the discovery of two such authenticated compounds. Individual GC response factors for each standard compound allowed rigorous quantification of dimeric products released from softwood lignins, affording insight into the various interunit-linkage distributions in lignins and thereby guiding the valorization of lignocellulosics., (© 2015 The Authors. A new method has been developed for the determination of hydroxide, sulphide, thiosulphate, sulphate, sulphite, chloride, oxalate and formate in kraft green, white and black liquors by capillary electrophoresis. The method provides baseline resolution of all analytes of interest using an electrolyte composed of 10 mM sodium chromate and 2 mM tetradecyltrimethylammonium hydroxide. Separations are conducted under constant current conditions at 25 degrees C and analytes are quantified by indirect UV-detection at 275 nm. A brief, post run wash of the capillary with 0.5 M NaOH and water gave improved inter- and intra-run repeatability of both migration times and peak areas. Sulphide and other oxysulphur species were relatively stable in white and green liquors diluted in helium-sparged water. However, sulphide present in black liquor samples diluted in the same solvent underwent rapid oxidation to form sulphite and thiosulphate. thereby precluding the measurement of all three anions. We discovered that quinone-type compounds present in black liquor catalyze the oxidation of sulphide and that the addition of reduced glutathione at a concentration of I mg/mL during black liquor dilution completely stabilized sulphide, sulphite and thiosulphate for at least one hour, thus allowing for quantitative analysis of the analytes. A mechanism is proposed to explain the action of both quinones and that of glutathione. Results obtained by the new method compared well with those obtained by ion chromatography, titrimetry, and from spike-recovery experiments.

This study experimentally quantified the formation of organic sulfur compounds in a commercial SuperBatch kraft pulping process using a laboratory pilot-scale digester. The results indicate that wood chips not only can adsorb HS- but also methyl mercaptan (MM) in the black liquor used for pretreatment during the two pretreatment stages. The absorption rate of MM is much faster than that of HS-. In the third stage of SuperBatch pulping, the rate of formation of MM and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) is very similar to that found in conventional batch kraft pulping processes. The study examined the applicability of the phase transition cooking (PTC) concept for reducing organic sulfur compounds in pulping, previously developed in laboratory batch pulping using a bomb-type digester, in a SuperBatch process. It was confirmed that there is a phase transition point (PTP) corresponding to PTC in SuperBatch pulping beyond which further delignification significantly increases the formation of volatile organic sulfur compounds. The results indicate that a 40% reduction of TRS formation can be achieved by using PTC.
