Abstract Background Due to urbanization and changes in family structure, the need for domestic workers has surged in many developing countries, including Rwanda. While being employed as a domestic worker presents financial benefits to many of them and their dependents, it also comes with risks and difficulties that might harm the domestic worker's mental health. Aim This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with suicidal behaviors (i.e., suicidal ideations, plans, and attempt(s)) among domestic workers in Rwanda. Method In this cross-sectional study, data was captured from 884 domestic workers in Kigali, Rwanda. Suicidal ideation was measured using questions from the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28), while suicide attempts and plans were measured using questions adopted from previous studies in the region. The methods used/plan to attempt suicide were also captured from individuals with a recent history of suicide plan/attempt(s). Three separate regression models were employed to ascertain the factors associated with suicidal behaviors. Results The prevalence of past-year suicidal behaviors was 32.5% for suicidal ideations, 9.5% for suicide plans, and 7.8% for suicidal attempts. Being female and having a chronic medical illness were linked to a higher risk of participating in any form of suicidal behavior. Suicidal ideations were less likely to occur among those who attained secondary education. However, more years of working as a domestic worker were associated with an increased likelihood of suicidal ideations. Having more than five dependents at work increased the likelihood of experiencing suicidal plans or attempts among domestic workers. For those who attempted suicide, overdosing with medications/drugs was the most common method of attempting. Conclusion Domestic workers have prevalent suicide behaviors, especially among females and those with a chronic medical illness, more years of work experience, and those with many household members at work. Based on the present study, for domestic workers at risk, there is a critical need for focused mental health interventions and support networks in various sectors of the domestic labor force.

ObjectiveMethodResultsDiscussionThe Blue Whale Challenge (BWCh), widely reported as a media hoax in 2017, was allegedly an online game encouraging teenagers to commit suicide.Google Trends identified the peak interest in the BWCh in March 2017. Tweets containing ‘suicide’ were analyzed, with each tweet reviewed for personal suicidal content. Data on suicide attempts and deaths were sourced from the National Police Headquarters, while hospital admissions data (ICD-10 codes F00-F99 and T36-T65) was collected from the Hospital Morbidity Survey. Crisis helpline data for children and adolescents (116 111) was also gathered.Between January 24 and April 10, 2017, 17,063 tweets containing ‘suicide’ were posted, with 240 identified as personal suicidal content: 65.7% expressed suicidal thoughts, 11.7% plans, and 1.3% encouragement. In April 2017, suicide deaths were higher among 19–24-year-olds compared to April 2018, while suicide attempts were lower among 13–18-year-olds compared to April 2019. No significant increase in suicide attempts was found during the BWCh period for individuals aged 0-18. Hospital admissions for T36-T65 codes peaked in 2017 for the 5–14 age group. Crisis helpline data showed decreasing phone calls and increasing chat messages from 2015 to 2020.There is no definitive link between BWCh popularity and a rise in suicidal behaviour nationwide. Despite widespread media coverage, there was no noticeable surge in suicide statistics. This study highlights the prevalence of harmful suicidal content on Twitter, emphasising the importance of mental health promotion, prevention, and support for social media users. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of the literature with the SPIDER structured search strategy in six databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and LILACS). A meta-synthesis was performed with data from qualitative studies published between 2005 and 2021. Two independent reviewers screened and assessed the articles. They evaluated methodological quality of included articles, extracted data, and performed the thematic synthesis. Results: Of 852 articles, 21 met the inclusion/exclusion criteria and were synthesized. The meta-synthesis revealed three descriptive themes: coping with adverse experiences; coming across fortunate experiences; professional-personal implications. Based on these descriptive themes, we elaborated the analytical theme: bittersweet experiences of personal and professional transformation. Conclusions: Mental health professionals working with people manifesting suicidal behaviors must cope with complex emotional experiences that involve controversial and ambivalent feelings. Such feelings have repercussions that may transform personal and professional life. The present results are useful for the development and implementation of interventions that promote better overall mental health outcomes for healthcare providers. Abstract Background Suicide is higher among adults with disabilities compared to their counterparts without disabilities and suicide is mostly preceded with suicidal ideations. For each successful suicide, there could be many ideations and attempts. Limited scientific data exist on the issue of mothers with disabilities and suicidal ideations. Therefore, this study explored suicidal ideations and coping strategies of mothers living with physical disabilities in Ghana. Methods Qualitative descriptive exploratory design was used and data was collected through individualized in-depth interviews. All participants were purposefully selected after informed consent was sought. Data was audiotaped, transcribed and analyzed inductively using content analysis technique. Results Almost all the women in this study reported suicidal ideations from time to time. Poisoning was the most predominant means which the women had considered to use if they ever attempted the suicide. Suicidal thoughts were precipitated mainly by discrimination. Their resilience and ability to cope were due to self-motivation, children, counselling, assistance from relatives and prayer. Conclusion We concluded that, it is crucial for all health professionals to explore and identify suicidal intentions among mothers with disabilities for them to be referred to the appropriate units for necessary help.

Introduction: Suicide is the second most common cause of death among adolescents in industrialized countries and high rates are being reported from India recently. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of suicidal ideation among students in a medical college in Mangalore and to associate the same with various socio demographic characteristics. Materials & Methods: A cross sectional (health survey) study done using pre-validated, structured and self-administered questionnaire based on Beck's scale of suicidal ideation, elicits questions on demography, life events and suicide ideation. Universal sampling method was followed and Chi Square test was done to test the significance (p<0.05). Results: Among 415 students, 179(43.1%) were males and 236(56.9%) were females. 3.6% and 8.9% had high and moderate risk of committing suicide respectively. 3.3% felt to attempt suicide at least once in last 12months and 27.9% did not care if they live or die. Suicidal Ideations were more significant among individuals with habits such as smoking and alcohol (p=0.036) and other addictions (p=0.006). Characteristics such as being neglected by parents, being physically assaulted by seniors, having psychiatric illnesses were more statistically significant to have suicidal ideas than other characteristics. Conclusion: Social factors have major impact on suicidal ideation among students. Identification of high risk adolescents is important to prevent suicides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Involvement in bullying as well as cyberbullying has been identified as a risk factor for depression and anxiety symptom as well as suicide ideation/behavior. Results from community samples suggest that youth who are bullied, are at an elevated risk for suicidal thoughts, attempts, and completed suicides. Statistically both victims of cyberbullying as well as offenders proved to be much more likely to have attempted “bullycide,” the act of committing suicide due to the effects of bullying, than youth who had not been affected. The Aim of this study: To determine the correlation between being a cyberbullying victim and suicidal ideation and/or behavior in adults and young adult population. Patients and Methods: This is a cross-sectional, analytical study that includes 408 subjects of both genders of online social-media above the age of 18. All subjects have been screened using GHQ28 for the exclusion of mental illness at the time of study. Then subjects completed Cyberbullying Self Rated Questionnaire (CBQ) and Suicide Probability Scale (SPS) both in Arabic. Results: suicidal probability was found to be increased proportionately in a statistically significant way with the degree of exposure to cyberbullying. Conclusion: There is a significant increase in suicidal ideations/ behaviors among cyberbullying victims whom have been exposed to higher levels of cyberbullying, even in the absence of major psychiatric disorders. Objective: The present study was conducted to determine the frequency of lifetime suicide attempts and suicidal ideations and to determine related risk factors on patients admitted to psychiatry outpatient clinic of Erzincan State Hospital. Material and Method: All the patients were asked for their suicidal ideations and behaviors in their lifetime. The sociodemographic data, number of application to outpatient clinics, the presence of a psychiatric disorder and a history of a suicide attempt within the family were questioned and recorded. The diagnosis based on DSM-1V-TR was determined after the psychiatric interview by the same psychiatrist. Among 1378 invited, 1073 participate in the study (77.9%). Results: Suicidal ideations were 28.3% (n=303) and attempts were 18.5% (n=198) during lifetime. Rate of suicidal attempts was 65.3% (198/303). Patients who considered or attempted suicide were more common among women than men. The most frequently diagnosed psychiatric condition was mood disorders followed by anxiety disorders for the patients with suicidal ideations and suicide attempts. For the group with suicidal attempts, the third most frequent diagnosis was somatoform disorders. Undiagnosed cases ranked third for the group with suicidal ideations. Conclusion: It is crucial to examine suicidal ideations and suicide attempts in all psychiatric patients. Following mood and anxiety disorders, the third most common diagnosis was somatoform disorders in patients living in rural areas of Eastern Turkey. The underlying question of the present study was whether suicide attempt and suicidal ideation are derived from the same personality dynamic among psychiatric outpatients. Participants included 80 males and females with a history of suicide attempt and 92 without such a history. All participants were evaluated individually with the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ; Cloninger, 1987) and with the Beck Suicide Inventory (BSI; Beck & Steer, 1991). Based on the evaluation results, those without a history of suicide attempt were divided into two groups: high and low suicidal ideations.
