Physical and mental health problems had been identified as the negative outcomes of workplace violence (WPV) against medical staff. Considering the proven associations between physical and mental health and suicidal ideation, it is reasonable to assume that WPV may associate with suicidal ideation. However, few studies were conducted to explore the relationship between WPV and their suicidal ideation against medical staff. Based on a cross-sectional design, 3, 426 medical staff working in general hospitals were interviewed in Shandong Province, China. Socio-demographic characteristics, work-related factors, psychological variables, WPV, and suicidal ideation were evaluated. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to explore the association between WPV and suicidal ideation. The prevalence of suicidal ideation among medical staff was 9.1% (312/3426), and 52.2% (1788/3426) of medical staff reported the WPV experience. Before PSM, we found that the association between WPV and suicidal ideation was statistically significant (aOR = 1.606, p  < 0.01). After PSM, there was a statistically significant correlation between WPV and suicidal ideation (aOR = 1.525, p  < 0.01). This study supported the correlations between WPV against medical staff and their suicidal ideation. The results of PSM further implied that WPV might cause suicidal ideation among medical staff. Psychological health, especially for suicidal ideation, should be paid attention for medical staff with WPV experiences.

Introduction: Suicide and early alcohol use initiation are public health concerns. Previous studies have explored the associations between age of alcohol use initiation and suicidal behaviors, which progresses from ideation to action. Distinguishing between the various associations can help gain a deeper understanding of suicidal behaviors and aid in developing social suicide prevention strategies., Methods: The study utilized the Youth Risk Behavior Survey to investigate this association. A total of 17 209 students were finally included in the study. Conditional suicidal behaviors included no suicidal behavior (NS), suicidal ideation without a plan or attempt (SINPA), suicide plan without an attempt (SPNA) and suicide attempt (SA)., Results: Among 17 209 students, the prevalence of suicidal ideation, suicide plan, and suicide attempt were 21.4%, 17.3%, and 11.1%, respectively. Moreover, 15.2% of the students used alcohol before age 13, whereas 31.7% of students used alcohol at age 13 or older. Compared to NS, students using alcohol showed significant associations with SA (OR = 2.34, p < .001; OR = 1.29, p < .01), SPNA (OR = 1.68, p < .001; OR = 1.19, p < .05) and SINPA (OR = 1.55, p < .001; OR = 1.40, p < .001). Comparing with SINPA and SNPA, students using alcohol before age 13 were associated with SA (OR = 1.61, p < .001; OR = 1.46, p < .001), whereas those using alcohol at or after the age 13 were not associated with SA (OR = 0.98, p > .05; OR = 1.09, p > .05)., Discussion: This study demonstrated that early alcohol use initiation was significantly associated with suicide attempts among students with suicidal ideations or plans., (© 2024 John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd.)

Introduction: Since pesticides have been widely used in agricultural production, acute pesticide poisoning (APP) has gradually become a worldwide public health problem. Recently, the number of APP cases has been high in China, and the intentional self-administration of pesticides is the main cause of APP. However, there is a lack of relevant studies on the factors influencing suicidal intent in patients with intentional APP. This study aimed to explore the current situation and influencing factors for suicidal intent among patients with intentional APP., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled a total of 225 patients with intentional APP admitted to the emergency department of our Grade A comprehensive hospital in Shandong Province between June 2019 and January 2021. Patients were investigated using a health status interview questionnaire, Beck Suicidal Intent Scale, Duke Social Support Index, psychological stress scale, Dickman Impulsivity Inventory, Trait Anxiety Inventory, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and Beck Hopelessness Scale. Descriptive statistics, single-factor analysis, and multiple linear regression were used for data analysis., Results: Suicidal intent scores were collected and averaged (14.23 ± 6.22). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that marital status, residential area, impulsivity, hopelessness, depression, psychological strain, and social support impact suicidal intent., Conclusion: Patients with intentional APP have high suicidal intent. High prevalence and strong associations of chronic disease, poor sleep quality, poor mental health, and suicidal ideation (SI) have been reported worldwide. However, the underlying mechanism remains unexamined. The participants were 2646 Chinese medical college students with an average age of 20.13 years. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale, and SI was evaluated. The lifetime SI, past 12-month SI, and chronic disease prevalence rates were 10.0%, 8.4%, and 4.6%, respectively. The results of logistic regression analysis in this study found that chronic disease, self-reported poor sleep quality, poor mental health, gender and scholarship were associated with lifetime SI. Similar results were also found for 12-month SI with an exception of region. This result indicated that the effects of chronic diseases on the SI were mediated by self-reported sleep quality and mental health. Physical diseases, sleep-related concerns, and mental health issues need to be addressed through a multidisciplinary team approach and various delivery systems to prevent SI among medical college students., (© 2022. This study aims to explore the association between parents parenting styles differences and lifetime suicidal ideation (LSI). The sample included 2598 Chinese medical students. Results showed that 10.5% of students reported LSI. Moreover, total differences in parenting styles (OR = 1.04, 95% CI = 1.02, 1.06), parental nurture rejects differences (OR = 1.11, 95% CI = 1.04, 1.18), parental emotional warmth differences (OR = 1.08, 95% CI = 1.03, 1.14), and parental overprotective differences (OR = 1.11, 95% CI = 1.06, 1.16), obtain a scholarship, physical disease and mental health were associated with LSI. The major finding reminds us of the importance of consistent parenting style for suicide prevention.

Objectives: We want to test the association between carbon monoxide poisoning (CMP) experiencing and lifetime suicidal ideation/suicide plan among community residents. Methods: This is a population-based cross-sectional study conducted among community residents in Hebei province, China. We analyzed a total of 21,376 valid questionnaires. CMP experience and lifetime suicidal ideation/suicide plan were assessed in this study. Logistic regression and false discovery rate correction were conducted to analyze the associations and correct the p values. Results: We found that CMP (OR = 2.56, p < 0.001, corrected-p = 0.001) was associated with lifetime suicidal ideation, and the other risk factors were female ( OR = 0.53, p < 0.001, corrected-p = 0.001). The association between CMP and suicide plan was not supported after false discovery rate correction ( OR = 2.15, p = 0.035, corrected- p = 0.385). For the CMP patients, experiencing ≥2 times CMP ( OR = 2.76, p = 0.001, corrected-p = 0.011) was also in higher risk of lifetime suicidal ideation. The association between CMP times and lifetime suicidal plan was not supported after false discovery rate correction ( OR = 4.95, p = 0.021, corrected- p = 0.231). Conclusion: CMP patients are in higher risk of lifetime suicidal ideation. Background: Although the association between sleep problems and suicidal behaviors were found in many studies, their associations are not built until now. One of the reasons may be the identified differences among different suicide behaviors, which also implied that sleep quality may play different roles on these suicidal behaviors. However, absent study explores the possible distinguishing associations between sleep quality and different suicidal behaviors., Methods: This is a population-based study conducted in Hebei province, China. Totally, 21,376 valid questionnaires were analyzed in this study. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to evaluate sleep quality. Suicidal behaviors, living alone, and social-demographic variables were assessed for all the participants., Results: The prevalence of suicidal ideation, plan, and attempt were 1.4%, 0.3%, and 0.2%, respectively. The PSQI scores were separately associated with suicidal ideation (OR=1.25, p<0.001), plan (OR=1.19, p<0.001), and attempt (OR=1.18, p<0.001). The similar results were also supported when we compared conditional suicidal behaviors with general population without any suicidal behaviors. However, when we compared suicide attempters with suicidal ideators (with or without suicide plan), the associations between PSQI scores and suicide attempt were not supported (OR=1.93, P>0.05 or OR=1.02, p>0.05)., Limitations: The cross-sectional design made us cannot get any causal relationships. The self-reported sleep quality may also produce some influence on the results., Conclusion: The results imply us that improving sleep quality may be not effective to control further suicidal behaviors, when people have considered or planned to suicide. Aim: This study was aimed to compare the psychological strains between suicides and suicide attempters, so as to verify the hypothesis whether the stronger psychological strains increase the odds of suicide death., Method: The suicide data were collected by a psychological autopsy (PA) study, and the suicide attempt data were from the same rural areas in China. Information was obtained with face to face structured questionnaires interviews. A social value conflict scale, measures of aspiration and deprivation, and Moos's Coping Response Inventory (CRI) were used to measure psychological strains. The Spearman correlation and Logistic regression method were applied to analyse and estimate the odds ratio (OR) of fatality of suicide behaviours from psychological strains., Results: The value strain, aspiration strain, deprivation strain, and coping strain were all significantly stronger among the suicides than suicide attempters (P < 0.001). Each psychological strain had statistical correlation with suicide behaviour (P < 0.001). The univariable and multivariable Logistic regressions all indicated that rural residence, being never married, and the psychological strains were the independent lethality factors of suicidal behaviours., Conclusions: Psychological strains were the independent lethality factors of suicide behaviours. Stronger psychological strains increase the odds of suicide death. The intervention based on the Strain Theory of Suicide could decrease the odds risk of suicide death., (Copyright © 2020. Background: Although massive studies have explored the risk factors of suicidal ideation (SI), the prevalence of SI and its associated factors in the hypertensive individuals are largely unknown. This study aims to investigate the factors associated with SI in the hypertensive individuals., Methods: Three thousand nine hundred eleven hypertensive individuals in Shandong, China were included in the analysis. SI was assessed by using a question from the NCS (National Comorbidity Survey). We used binary logistic regression analysis to explore the factors associated with SI, and path analysis to test the direct and indirect relationships between associated factors and SI among hypertensive patients., Results: The prevalence of SI in the hypertensive individual was19.6%. Psychological distress had the greatest direct (β = 0.640, p-value <0.01) and total effect (β = 0.640, p-value <0.01) on SI. Other factors including comorbidity (β = 0.090, p-value <0.01), gender (β = 0.088, p-value <0.01), marital status (β = - 0.037, p-value <0.01), economic status (β = - 0.106, p-value <0.01), residence (β = - 0.050, p-value <0.01), alcohol use (β = 0.011, p-value <0.01), exercise (β = - 0.114, p-value <0.01), hospitalization (β = 0.041, p-value <0.01) only had indirect effects on SI. Psychological distress was a mediator between SI and those variables., Conclusion: A significant mediation effect of psychological distress on the associations between SI and some associated factors (i.e., economic status, comorbidity) was demonstrated.

Backgrounds: Suicidal ideation is an important public health issue due to devastating mortality. In the meantime, interpersonal trust was found to be negatively associated with mental disorder and physical health. Although there is increasing evidence that interpersonal trust is a significant predictor of suicidal ideation, evidence of this association is still lacking in the developing world. The aim of this study was to test the association between interpersonal trust and suicidal ideation among older adults in China., Methods: Using a multi-stage stratified sampling strategy, 7070 older adults aged 60 and above from Shandong Province, China were recruited in this study. Socio-demographic characteristics, health status, family relationship, psychological distress, interpersonal trust and suicidal ideation in the last 12 months were obtained through face to face interviews. The association between interpersonal trust and suicidal ideation was assessed using multiple logistic regression models adjusting for socio-demographic characteristics, health status, family relationship and psychological distress., Results: 7.1% of participants reported suicidal ideation in the past 12 months, which was related to gender, resident area, marital status, educational level, self-rated economic, chronic disease, self-rated health status and family relationship within 1 month, psychological distress and interpersonal trust. After adjusting for sociodemographic factors, health status, family relationship and psychological distress, interpersonal mistrust was associated with two times odds of suicidal ideation when compared to interpersonal trust CONCLUSIONS: The interpersonal trust was associated with suicidal ideation among elderly in Shandong, China. Intervention approaches regarding inducing and promoting interpersonal trust should be developed to prevent suicide.

Increasing help-seeking behavior was one of the effective methods for suicide prevention. However, help-seeking behavior was less explored in rural China. In this study, we aimed to analyze the factors which were associated with help-seeking behavior among medically serious suicide attempters in rural China. Subjects were 791 medically serious suicide attempters aged 15-54 years in rural China. A face-to-face interview was conducted to evaluate the age, gender, education years, marital status, occupation, religious belief, living alone, physical disease, pesticide at home, family suicide history, negative life events, social support, impulsivity, mental disorder, prior suicide act, suicide intent and suicide method for the attempters. The results supported that there were 29.2% of attempters seek help before suicide behavior, and factors that male (OR = 1.45), experiencing negative life events (OR = 1.12), impulsivity (OR = 1.05), suicide intent (OR = 0.92) and suicide by pesticide (OR = 0.68) were associated with increased help-seeking behavior. It is helpful for us to understanding the features of suicide attempters who do not seek help before suicide behavior, and we also should pay more attention on people with these factors in Chinese suicide prevention., (Copyright © 2019. Objective: Previous studies have implied that there were many Chinese suicide attempters who did not want to die by suicide. In the current study, we explored the factors which were associated with low levels of suicide intent. We also examined features for medically serious suicide attempters who do not have a strong intent to die in rural china., Design: Cross-sectional study., Setting: The interviews occurred between May 2012 and July 2013 in 13 rural counties in Shandong and Hunan provinces, China., Participants: Subjects were 791 medically serious suicide attempters whose injury and wounds were so serious they required hospitalisation or immediate medical care., Results: The results supported that less years of education (β=-0.11, p=0.037), religious beliefs (β=1.20, p=0.005), living alone (β=1.92, p=0.017), negative life events (β=0.29, p=0.003), low levels of impulsivity (β=-0.10, p=0.013) and mental disorders (β=2.82, p<0.001) were associated with higher levels of suicide intent., Conclusion: Results imply that there are some medically serious suicide attempters with a higher education and/or exhibit impulsivity who do not want to die by suicide. In the past decades, many studies have discussed the topic of suicide acceptability. However, there is no empirical study which identified that suicide acceptability is associated with suicide attempt worldwide. In the present study participants were 791 medically serious suicide attempters and controls aged 15 to 54 years in rural China. Suicide acceptability was evaluated by four questions in the General Social Survey and some social psychological variables were collected in a face-to-face interview. Logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the association between suicide acceptability and suicide attempt. After controlling some social psychological variables, suicide acceptability was still associated with suicide attempt (odds ratio, 2.85; p < 0.001). Tired of living was the most acceptable reason for the medically serious suicide attempters (32.7%). Suicide acceptability should be assessed when we evaluate an individual's suicide risk. The results contribute to our understanding about suicide acceptability, and they may also be translated into practice in suicide prevention.

Objective: Suicide is a major public health and social problem in contemporary societies. Previous studies showed that the older the seniors were, the more likely it was that they would experience disability, chronic disease, or both. The objective of this study was to examine the joint effects of chronic disease and physical disability on suicide ideation while controlling for psychological distress among the rural elderly living in Shandong Province, China. Method : A total of 5514 rural elderly individuals (60+) living in Shandong Province, China were included in this study. Suicidal ideation was assessed by using questions from the National Comorbidity Survey (NCS). Multiple logistic analyses were performed to examine the factors associated with suicide ideation. A path analysis was conducted to test the direct and indirect effects of chronic disease and of activity of daily living (ADL) limitation on suicide ideation while controlling for psychological distress. Results : The prevalence of suicide ideation among the rural elderly in Shandong, China was 11.0%. Psychological distress had the strongest direct (β = 0.392) and total effect (β = 0.392), chronic disease (β = -0.034; β = -0.063) had both direct and indirect impacts, and ADL (β = 0.091) had indirect impacts on suicide ideation. Psychological distress was a mediator between chronic disease, ADL limitation, and suicide ideation. Conclusions : Psychological distress was the greatest influencing factor of suicide ideation among the rural elderly, followed by chronic disease and disability. Effective intervention measures should be taken to facilitate the early detection of psychological distress in clinical practice among the rural elderly.

Background: Recently, an emerging group of studies has reported the association between Body Mass Index (BMI) and suicidal ideation in the Western countries. However, this relationship is still unclear with controversial results, and we have little knowledge about this relationship in China which is one of few countries reported higher suicide rates., Methods: This study aims to analyze the association between BMI and suicidal ideation among seniors (≥60 years old) in Shandong, China. A total of 3313 seniors were included in the data analysis. Suicidal ideation, weight, height, socio-demographic and psychological variables were evaluated in this study. Logistic regression was conducted to explore the association between BMI and suicidal ideation among male and female seniors., Results: The results showed that 4.2% of the seniors reported suicidal ideation, and 3.4% for men, 4.9% for women. After controlling social-demographic variables, economic status, physical disease, social support and mental health, an inverse relationship between BMI and suicidal ideation was found for men, but not for women. Mental health was still an important factor associated with suicidal ideation., Conclusion: The results inform health care professors that underweight in male seniors can be associated with higher risk of suicidal ideation in China., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. To date, few studies have examined the association between difficulties in activities of daily living (ADL) and suicidal ideation (SI) among the seniors in China. This study aims to explore this association among older adults in China. A total of 3313 older people (60+) were included in this study, and questionnaires were administered by face-to-face interview. In total, 4.2% of the participants reported SI. The mean score of ADL among older adults with SI (21.06 ± 10.92) was much higher than that in those without SI (16.13 ± 5.60). Multivariate analyses showed that some specific domains of ADL including using transport, medical care, and household activities were associated with SI even after we controlled the psychological conditions. An association was observed between difficulties in daily living and SI among older adults in China. Psychological interventions should be taken to prevent potential risk of suicide targeting the seniors with certain disabilities.

Background: As China is going through a profound aging process, the mental health of the elderly is becoming an issue. As in many other societies, the elderly in China is a population at high risk of suicide; Methods: Data for the study were taken from the Sample Survey of the Aged Population in Urban/Rural China (SSAPUR) accomplished in 2010 by the China Ministry of Civil Affairs. The valid sample for this study was composed of 18,683 individuals, including 9416 urban residents and 9267 rural residents both aged 60 or more years; Results: Logistic regression analyses showed that household income and expenditure, the number of children, chronic diseases, disability of daily living, depression, the frequency of visiting neighbors and having friends or relatives who can help or not had remarkable effects on the suicidal ideation among urban and rural old people. Gender, education, political affiliation, marital status and self-rated health status did not work on the dependent variable. However, some risk factors for suicidal ideation among the Chinese elderly were different between rural and urban regions; Conclusions: We should take different measures when facing the different groups of the elderly., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest. Previous studies have identified global associations between sleep quality and suicidal ideation. However, little is known regarding the relationship between sleep quality and suicidal ideation among Chinese older adults. We examined the relationship between sleep quality and suicidal ideation in older adults in China. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 3313 seniors in Shandong, China. Suicidal ideation was assessed using the interviewees' answers to the question "Have you ever seriously considered wanting to die?". Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Logistic regression was performed to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals adjusted for confounders. When controlling for sex, age, living condition, economic status, marital status, education, past occupation, relationship with children, non-communicable diseases, and mental health, the odds of suicidal ideation increased in association with an increase in the total score for sleep quality and its components (subjective sleep quality, sleep duration, habitual sleep efficiency, and daytime dysfunction). Poor sleep quality was associated with increased odds of suicidal ideation in Chinese older adults. Objective: This study was to explore the relation between psychological strains and suicidal ideation among Chinese and American college students. Another secondary purpose of the study was to examine the reliability of the psychological strains scales (PPS: Ref) one more time in China and the United States in college populations., Method: Samples of college students were randomly recruited from China and United States. All of 529 college students (aged 17-27, 68.9% female) completed self-report assessments of psychological strains (Psychological Strain Scale), suicidal ideation (Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation), and indicators of psychological well-being (e.g., depression, anxiety, and stress)., Results: Empirical results show that Psychological Strain Scales (PSS) has a good reliability. Chinese college students reported higher suicide ideation scores than American students whereas there was no statistical difference in psychological strains. Psychological strains and, depression, anxiety, and stress, were positively related to suicidal ideation in both countries. Stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated that psychological strain can significantly predict suicidal ideation., Conclusions: These findings provide support for the Strain Theory of Suicide for both Chinese and American college students and some measures can be taken to reduce psychological strains in students. Background: Various factors contribute to suicide. Psychological strains are hypothesized to precede suicidal thought and attempt. Life satisfaction can be a measure of relative deprivation strain and aspiration-reality strain., Aims: This study was to compare the suicide attempters with various levels of life satisfaction and find out how life satisfaction affects the degree of suicide intent among medically serious suicide attempters., Methods: Subjects for study were recruited in some rural counties in China. Interview data were from hospital emergency rooms with medically serious attempters of suicide (n=791). The subjects were aged between 15 and 54years and 293 males and 498 females. Face to face interview was conducted for each suicide attempter with a semi-structural protocol including life satisfaction, physical health, demographic, sociological, and psychological measures, as well as psychological strains., Findings: The multiple linear regression analysis showed that mental disorder, aspiration strain and relative deprivation strain were significant risk factors for high intent of suicide among suicide attempters. The interaction between the two psychological strains also indicated that both failed aspiration and self-perceived low economic status in village play an important role in suicidal intent., Conclusion: Low level of life satisfaction is associated with strong intent for suicide. Lack of life satisfaction is exemplified by relative deprivation perceived by the individuals and the discrepancy between an individual's aspiration for life and his/her reality. Medical college students are a high-risk population of suicidal ideation, plan and attempt. However, few studies discuss the effect of parental characteristics on suicidal ideation, plans and attempts among medical college students in China. A total of 2198 respondents answered the questionnaires referring social-demographic characteristics, psychological conditions, parental characteristics, suicidal ideation, plan and attempt. The prevalence of suicidal ideation, plan and attempt among the subjects were 17.9%, 5.2% and 4.3%, respectively. The results of multiple logistic regression showed that male, mother's education level, mother's parenting style, relationship in parents and psychological condition were associated with lifetime suicidal ideation. Male, mother's vocation, mother's parenting style, relationship in parents and psychological conditions were associated with suicide plan. Male, relationship in parents and psychological condition were associated with suicide attempt. Those imply that mother may play more roles on suicidal ideation and plan than father among medical college students in China. Depression had the strongest direct (β=0.303, p-value<0.05) and total effect (β=0.303), life satisfaction (β=-0.103, p-value<0.05; β=-0.136, p-value<0.05), economic status (β=-0.046, p-value<0.05; β=-0.040, p-value<0.05) had both direct and indirect impacts on suicidal ideation. Social support (β=-0.040, p-value<0.05) had indirect influence on suicidal ideation. Depression was a mediator between life satisfaction, economic status, social support and suicidal ideation., Limitations: The data used in this study was cross-sectional, and the relationship between identified factors and suicidal ideation cannot be interpreted as cause-effect., Conclusions: Depression was the strongest influencing factor of suicidal ideation among the elderly, followed by life satisfaction, economic status. Psychological strains are hypothesized to precede a suicidal intent that may lead to suicide, where psychological strains can be considered a function of social structure embedded with negative life events. This study aimed to test the potential relationship between psychological strains and suicidal intent in Chinese rural suicide attempters. Data regarding medically serious suicide attempters (N = 791) were gathered from county-level emergency rooms in randomly selected counties in rural China (15-54 years of age). Face-to-face interview data were obtained with semistructured instruments. Results showed that the strain variables interacted with gender in predicting degree of suicide intent in Chinese rural suicide attempters. Specifically, aspiration strain and coping strain were associated with suicide intent in Chinese male suicide attempters, whereas value strain was associated with suicide intent in Chinese female suicide attempters. Although previous studies have discussed the risk factors of unplanned suicide behavior in several countries, the unplanned suicide attempt in China was not explored in a large sample. We aim to look into the characteristics of unplanned suicide attempters in China and compare them with those suicide attempters with plans. Subjects were 791 medically serious suicide attempters aged 15-54 years in rural China. The sixth item of Beck's Suicide Intent Scale was used to estimate the planned and unplanned suicide attempt. Logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the factors related to planned or unplanned suicide attempt. The results showed that the planned suicide attempts were associated with higher education, hopelessness, and previous suicide act. The unplanned suicide attempt tends to be suicide by pesticide and store pesticide at home. Background: Previous studies have examined the prevalence of psychological strains among various suicide populations. However, it is still unexamined whether psychological strains can predict suicide intent directly., Aims: We planned to explore the prevalence of psychological strains and analyze the relationship between psychological strains and suicide intent among Chinese rural young suicides., Methods: Psychological autopsy method was used to investigate the environmental and other factors of rural young suicides. Psychological strains were identified from in-depth interviews by the proxy informants of each suicide. The first 8 items of Beck's Suicidal Intention Scale (SIS) were used to estimate the suicide intent., Results: Results showed that 96.6% of the suicides had at least one type of strain, and those suicides who had more strains tended to score higher on the suicide intent scale., Conclusion: The study further supports that suicide intent can be predicted by psychological strains in Chinese rural young suicides. The suicide rate of females is very close to that of males in China, in contrast to Western societies, in which the rates of male suicide outnumber those of females by three to four times. This study investigated the prevalence of suicidal ideation and prosuicide attitude (acceptability) among females of childbearing age. With the Chinese version of the Scale for Suicide Ideation and the General Social Survey questionnaire, we examined the demographic and psychological risk factors of suicide among Chinese rural young females aged 15 to 34 years. Logistic regression analysis was performed to explore the factors related to suicidal ideation and suicide acceptability. The prevalence rates of suicidal ideation and suicide acceptability among the sampled females are 22.5% and 3.8%, respectively. Education, depression, social support, hopelessness, and negative life events were significantly associated with suicidal ideation. Ethnicity, education, abortion, and depression were significantly associated with suicide acceptability. There is statistical difference between suicide ideation and acceptability. The results indicate that mental disorder remains a major risk factor of suicidal ideation. Sociodemographic and psychological characteristics are associated with suicide acceptability.

Both alcohol use and cigarette smoking have been identified as risk factors for suicidal behaviors. However, suicide is a process from ideation to action, and some evidence have implied us that alcohol use and cigarette smoking may play different roles in the different process of suicidal behaviors. Data was derived from the 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), and a total of 12, 487 valid samples were analyzed in the study. To distinguish the different situation of suicidal behaviors, participants were divided into general people without any suicidal behavior (GNS), suicidal ideators without plan or attempt (SINPA), suicide planners without attempt (SPNA), and suicide attempters (SA). 1 1 GNS denotes to general people without any suicidal behavior, SINPA denotes to suicidal ideators without plan or attempt, SPNA denotes to suicide planners without attempt, SA denotes to suicide attempters. The prevalence of suicidal ideation, plan, and attempt were 19.4 %, 15.9 %, and 7.7 %, respectively. Comparing to GNS, alcohol use and cigarette smoking were associated with SINPA (OR = 1.27, P < 0.05; OR = 1.47, P < 0.001), SPNA (OR = 1.29, P < 0.01; OR = 1.26, P < 0.01), and SA (OR = 1.31, P < 0.01; OR = 2.11, P < 0.001). However, alcohol use was not associated with SA comparing to SINPA (OR = 1.05, P > 0.05) and SPNA (OR = 1.03, P > 0.05), while cigarette smoking was associated with SA (OR = 1.40, P < 0.01; OR = 1.74, P < 0.001). Firstly, using the secondary data was possibly limited. Next, this was a cross-sectional study, the casual relationship was unsure. Lastly, the amount of alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking status were not considered. Both alcohol use and cigarette smoking are risk factors for any suicidal behaviors. However, controlling alcohol use may be a limited method to prevent the further suicidal behaviors for ideators and planners. To date, few studies have examined the association between difficulties in activities of daily living (ADL) and suicidal ideation (SI) among the seniors in China. This study aims to explore this association among older adults in China. A total of 3313 older people (60+) were included in this study, and questionnaires were administered by face-to-face interview. In total, 4.2% of the participants reported SI. The mean score of ADL among older adults with SI (21.06 ± 10.92) was much higher than that in those without SI (16.13 ± 5.60). Multivariate analyses showed that some specific domains of ADL including using transport, medical care, and household activities were associated with SI even after we controlled the psychological conditions. An association was observed between difficulties in daily living and SI among older adults in China. Psychological interventions should be taken to prevent potential risk of suicide targeting the seniors with certain disabilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
