Enhanced sedimentation at glacial margins can produce submarine megaslides (>10,000 km3). We report a single megaslide in the Surveyor Fan, Gulf of Alaska. Minimum extant size is ∼16,124 km2 in area and ∼9,080 km3 in volume. Slope failure occurred ∼1.2 Ma at the onset of the mid‐Pleistocene transition (MPT). With accretion along the Aleutian‐Alaska Trench, the original volume is conservatively ∼16,280 km3, with only a 140 km run‐out due to its blocky, high shear strength nature. We suggest the megaslide was triggered by a major sediment influx at the onset of the MPT, when glacial‐interglacial cycles shifted from 41 to 100 Kyr. The absence of repeat megaslides may reflect a changing balance between seismic strengthening and sediment flux, where later sedimentation driven by cross‐shelf ice streams results in thin, fluidized, non‐cohesive slides. Continued accretion of the Surveyor Fan and megaslide also reduces critical wedge taper, further inhibiting major failure. The Qom Formation is the most important hydrocarbon reservoir target in Central Iran. The Qom platform developed in a back‐arc basin during the Oligo–Miocene due to the closing of the Tethyan Seaway. This formation consists of a variety of carbonate and non‐carbonate facies deposited on a platform ranging from supratidal to basin. A combination of tectonic and eustatic events led to some lateral and vertical facies variations in the study area. Six third‐order depositional sequences and related surfaces were identified regarding vertical facies changes in the studied sections of this Oligo–Miocene succession. According to all results and data, this succession was initially deposited during the Chattian upon a distally steepened ramp of siliciclastic‐carbonate composition, including the Bouma sequence. Then, from the late Chattian to the Aquitanian, the platform changed into a homoclinal carbonate ramp with a gentle profile. With respect to tectonic activity, this phase was a calm period during the deposition of the Qom Formation. Finally, a drowned carbonate platform and a rimmed shelf emerged during the Burdigalian, terminated by the continental deposits of the Upper Red Formation. The submarine fan with a narrow shelf is usually reactive to environmental signal propagation; however, source-to-sink functioning can be further complicated by several allogenic forcings. Here, we document the high-frequency provenance variations and different sediment delivery models recorded in the late Triassic Zhuoni fan developed in the northeastern Paleo-Tethys Ocean, mainly based on process-based sedimentological and provenance study of the Panyuan section in the West Qinling area in the northeastern margin of Tibetan Plateau. High-, low-density turbidites, hybrid event beds and hyperpycnites are distributed in the lobe-dominated submarine fan succession. Field sedimentological evidence from surrounding outcrops suggests that shelf-edge failure was the main cause of most high-and low-density turbidites with the overall absence of submarine slides or slumps, whereas the narrow shelf configuration together with late Triassic humid pulses is favourable for the occurrence of flood-related hyperpycnites in the Zhuoni fan. Detrital zircon grains (N = 6; n=123-272) generally have Palaeozoic-Mesozoic ages (ca. 350-250 Ma and 500-400 Ma) and Neoarchean-Paleoproterozoic ages (ca. 2100-1750 Ma and 2600-2400 Ma), but they can be further categized into three age groups due to different proportions of Precambrian age populations. The results demonstrate that the potential source areas may include the South and North Qinling Orogenic Belt, Qilian Orogenic Belt, different segments of North China Craton and the tectonic junction area between the Qinling and Qilian Orogenic Belts. The temporal changes in provenance signals, which are reflected by both the detrital zircon age spectra and heavy mineral assemblages, indicate different contributions of those sources in response to sea-level fluctuation. It could thus give rise to temporal variations between reactive and buffered source-to-sink sediment delivery models of the Zhuoni fan, despite the overall narrow shelf configuration. The development of the lowstand Zhuoni fan was directly related to extrabasinal hyperpycnal delivery from the river mouth and its high-frequency provenance variability recorded different efficiencies of signal transfer through the onshore catchment with significantly influence of temporal storage, fluvial rejuvenation or even regional climate variability. The highstand submarine fan was thought to be formed by shelf-edge failure with sediment buffering in the shelf region, which was associated with a strong magnitude of provenance mixing. The influence of bottom currents on submarine channels has been widely recognized, for instance, by the formation of asymmetric channel-levee systems and drifts. In contrast, it is often considered that submarine lobes can be only reworked by strong bottom currents and are not affected by bottom currents during their deposition. In this study, we analyse the potential effect of bottom currents on different hierarchical lobe architectures that formed during the lower Oligocene in the Rovuma Basin offshore East Africa. We characterize the stacking patterns, morphology and connectivity of different hierarchy lobes using well data and three-dimensional seismic data. We found no direct influence of bottom currents on the lobe complexes and single lobes that show a unidirectional stacking pattern that is opposite to the direction of bottom currents. Lobe elements in single lobes display vertical accretion with no obvious relationship with bottom currents. Additionally, the first deposited single lobe morphology presents an asymmetric shape, with a thicker lobe margin on the downstream side of the bottom currents, but this is due to an initial low topography on the downstream side rather than bottom currents. The architectural distribution reflects that the topography present before the depositions of the submarine lobes was controlled by previous asymmetrical channel-levee systems formed by the synchronous interaction of bottom currents and gravity flows. This asymmetric topography controls the subsequent deposition of lobes and results in the migration of single lobes in the upstream direction of bottom currents. Although weak to moderate bottom currents may not be able to substantially rework submarine lobes, our results demonstrate that they may control the geometry and evolution of submarine channels and thus indirectly affect the thickness and migration of lobes in more environments than previously thought. The deposits of the upper Neoproterozoic Zerrissene Group of central‐western Namibia represent a large siliciclastic deep‐water depositional system that showcases the intricacies of facies and architectural relationships from bed‐scale to fan‐system‐scale. The lack of vegetation in the Namib Desert and regular east–west repetition of folded stratigraphy (reflecting ca 50% tectonic shortening) provides quasi‐three‐dimensional exposure over a current area of approximately 2700 square kilometres. The Brak River Formation, the middle sand‐rich unit of the Zerrissene Group, consists of nearly 600 m of strata exposed in multiple parallel continuous outcrops up to ca 10 km in length and oriented obliquely to depositional dip. Ten stratigraphic sections are correlated ca 32 km (ca 64 km restored) across the basin and offer exposure comparable in scale to modern submarine fans. Six sedimentary facies are identified and grouped into four facies associations that represent axial‐to‐marginal portions of deep‐water lobes in an unconfined submarine fan system. Spatial facies patterns, regional thickness variations, and palaeocurrents indicate that Brak River Formation sediments were transported primarily from the north to south–south‐west through a trough‐like basin, and deposited within an unconfined basin plain at the junction of the Adamastor and Khomas oceans. The unique outcrop exposure and extent permits the documentation of system‐scale architecture and basin configuration of the Brak River submarine fan system. A transition from the sand‐rich lower Brak River Formation to more intercalated mudstone‐dominated intervals in the middle and upper Brak River Formation is interpreted to record a change from aggradational to compensational stacking of lobe deposits. This records the evolution of a large submarine fan as it filled the subtle seafloor topography and became less confined at the system‐scale. The documentation of these deep‐water deposits from centimetre‐scale to basin‐scale provides a new model for a system with extensive long‐distance transport of sand‐rich sediment gravity flows to submarine lobes without apparent channelization. Investigating the sedimentary architecture and evolution of sand-rich submarine fans is vital for comprehending deep-water sedimentary processes and enhancing the success rate of hydrocarbon resource exploration. Recent drilling activities in the Qiongdongnan Basin, northern South China Sea, have unveiled significant gas hydrate and shallow gas potential. However, exploration in this area faces substantial challenges due to the limited understanding of sandy reservoirs. Leveraging extensive newly acquired extensive 3D seismic data (~9000 km²) and well data, our study reveals five distinct deep-water depositional systems in the Quaternary Ledong Formation, including a submarine fan system, mass transport deposits, deepwater channel-levee systems, slope fans, and hemipelagic sediments. Notably, the targeted sandrich submarine fan lies within the abyssal plain, situated at a water depth of 1300-1700 m. This fan exhibits a unique tongue-shape configuration and a SW-NE flow direction within the plane and spans an expansive area of ~2800 km² with maximum length and width reaching 140 km and 35 km, respectively. Vertically, the fan comprises five stages of distributary channel-lobe complexes, progressing from Unit 1 to Unit 5. Their distribution ranges steadily increase from Unit 1 to Unit 3, followed by a rapid decrease from Unit 4 to Unit 5. Our results suggest that the occurrence and evolution of the submarine fan are primarily controlled by sea level fluctuation, confined geomorphology, and sediment supply. Specifically, sea level fluctuation and sediment supply influenced the occurrence of the submarine fan. Concurrently, the confined geomorphology in the abyssal plain provided accumulation space for sediments and shaped the fan into its distinct tongue-like form. In contrast to the deepwater channels within the deepwater channel-levee systems, the distributary turbidite channels within the submarine fan are marked by lower erosion depth with "U" shapes, greater channel width, and higher ratios of width to depth. The comparative analysis identifies turbidite channels as the focal points for offshore gas hydrate and shallow gas exploration in the Qiongdongnan Basin. Furthermore, the temporal evolution of submarine fan offers valuable insights into Quaternary deep-water sedimentary processes and hydrocarbon exploration within shallow strata of marginal ocean basins. The Tertiary-age deep-marine succession cropping out between Tarifa and Algeciras can be subdivided into two units, namely the Late Eocene-?Early Oligocene Getares Unit and the overlying Oligocene-?Early Miocene Algeciras Formation. These strata comprise six sedimentary facies, ranging from thick-bedded sandstones to mudstones. The depositional settings are variable, comprising sandstone/calcarenite packages with intercalated mudstones and marls. The lowermost coarse-grained package is the Getares Unit (fan-fringe setting). This is overlain by the thick-bedded sandstones of the Algeciras Fm (channel, channel-margin setting) which pass upwards into more laterally-extensive beds (sheet-like lobe). Sediments were derived from a coastal setting to the north, as evidenced by occasionally abundant plant remains, from direct fluvial input (hyperpycnal flow). Within this succession, 34 ichnogenera (48 ichnospecies) have been recorded, including, Belorhaphe, Capodistria, Chondrites, Circulichnis, Cochlichnus, Cosmorhaphe, Desmograpton, Gordia, Halopoa, ?Helicorhaphe, Helminthopsis, Helminthorhaphe, Imponoglyphus, Lorenzinia, Megagrapton, Oldhamia, Ophiomorpha, Palaeophycus, Paleodictyon, ?Phycodes, Phycosiphon, Planolites, Protopaleodictyon, Protovirgularia, Scolicia, Skolithos, Spirophycus, Spirophyton, Spirohaphe, Taenidium, Teichichnus, Thalassinoides Urohelminthoida and Zoophycos. Of the ichnofossil assemblages that were defined, most are concentrated in the fan-fringe (Getares Unit; 74%) and channel/channel-margin (lowermost Algeciras Fm; 41%) settings, with a marked reduction in the sheet lobe system (uppermost Algeciras Fm; 9%). The ichnofaunal assemblage from the Tarifa-Almeria section represents the Nereites ichnofacies, or more specifically, the Paleodictyon and Nereites subichnofacies, both typified by abundant graphoglyptids. Deposition in the Algeciras-Tarifa region commenced with the mudstones underlying the Getares Unit followed by a sandstone package (fan fringe; Punta de Getares), indicative of fan progradation. Subsequent mudstones suggest a phase of quiescence before the deposition of the thick, sandy hyperpycnites in the lower part of the Algeciras Fm (Punta del Carnero I & II) where deposition was probably related to flooding events in the source rivers to the N. These were subsequently overlain by the Tarifa area lobe sediments. Deposition of the succession coincided with the transition from a Greenhouse to an Icehouse climatic regime (Eocene-Oligocene) and this change may be reflected in the marked reduction in ichnofaunas moving from the lower (Punta del Carnero) to the upper (Tarifa) Algeciras Fm. Deep‐water carbonate deposition is relatively poorly understood but an area of vigorous research in academia and industry, where these deposits are a significant component of many unconventional petroleum reservoirs. Recent studies of modern deep‐water carbonates have highlighted the wide variety of depositional processes, sediment types and resultant geomorphology; however, well‐documented outcrops of ancient systems, their rock types and architecture are relatively sparse. The Mississippian Lake Valley Formation provides world‐class exposures of slope‐basinal carbonate deposits. The Tierra Blanca and Doña Ana members comprise submarine fans that are >14 to 20 km in length, >5 km wide, and exposed in strike and dip view, affording a unique opportunity to constrain the architecture, rock types and sedimentary processes. Tierra Blanca and Doña Ana sedimentation was dominated by crinoids shed from an up‐dip platform and supplemented by sediments sourced locally from Waulsortian mounds. Depositional processes include turbidity flows, debris flows and hybrid sediment‐gravity flows. The Tierra Blanca submarine fan thins towards its lateral flanks and distal fringe, where deposits become more mud‐dominated, gravelly grain‐supported flows are less common, and fewer beds have scoured bases. In proximal settings, bed tracing complemented by measured sections allow mapping of stratal surfaces and identification of stories, elements and complexes. The Tierra Blanca evolved from more unconfined to confined deposition. Point‐sourced deposition of the Tierra Blanca fan required a funnelling mechanism, probably due to bathymetry created by Waulsortian mounds or possibly a platform margin re‐entrant. Outcrop exposures illustrate that younger Doña Ana submarine fan deposits onlap onto, and compensationally stack with, the thickest portions of the antecedent Tierra Blanca fan. These outcrops illustrate both similarities and differences between carbonate and siliciclastic gravity flow deposits. Similarities include comparable deposit types, depositional processes and architecture; differences relate to hydrodynamics of carbonate grains, funnelling mechanisms for point‐sourced deposits and sequence stratigraphic forcing. We use heat flux measurements colocated with seismic reflection profiles over a buried basement high on the Juan de Fuca plate ∼25 km seaward of the deformation front offshore Oregon to test for the presence of hydrothermal circulation in the oceanic crust. We also revisit heat flux data crossing a buried basement high ∼25 km seaward of the deformation front ∼150 km north, offshore Washington. Seafloor heat flux is inversely correlated with sediment thickness, consistent with vigorous hydrothermal circulation in the basement aquifer homogenizing temperatures at the top of the basement. Heat flux immediately above the summit of the basement highs is greater than expected solely from conduction. Fluid seepage at rates of ∼2.6–5.4 cm yr−1 in a 1–1.5 km‐wide conduit through ∼800–1,300 m thick sediment sections above these basement highs can explain these observations. Observations of thermally significant fluid seepage through sediment >225 m thick on oceanic crust are unprecedented. High sediment permeability, high fluid overpressure in the basement, or a combination of both is required to drive fluid seepage at the observed rates. We infer that rapid seepage occurs because the basement highs rise above the low permeability basal sediment with their tops protruding into the base of high permeability Nitinat or Astoria Fan sediment. Seepage from basement highs penetrating into the submarine fans can affect the thermal state of crust entering the subduction zone. Plain Language Summary: Fluid circulation in the oceanic crust can transport large amounts of heat, influencing the heat content and the distribution of heat within the crust. This fluid circulation primarily occurs in a high permeability aquifer composed of rapidly cooled basalt flows that comprise the upper ∼300 m of oceanic crustal rocks. Most marine sediments that accumulate on the basaltic aquifer have very low permeability and inhibit fluid flow; for sediment covered oceanic crust, fluid recharge/discharge from/to the ocean only occurs at sediment‐free basement outcrops. For most sediment types, ∼40 m of sediment accumulation is sufficient to slow fluid flow rates through them, so that fluid flow is not thermally significant. For sites offshore Oregon and Washington, we document thermally significant fluid seepage through sediment ∼800–1,300 m thick. This seepage occurs over buried basaltic hills that penetrate through low permeability sediment into a thick layer of high permeability sandy sediment that hosts the seepage. The fluid seepage, at ∼2.6–5.4 cm yr−1, is fast enough to remove heat from the underlying crust. This can affect the temperature of the crust entering the subduction zone offshore North America. The Ledong submarine channel and the Dongfang submarine fan, two remarkable sedimentary systems developed during the late Miocene, are considered promising hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Yinggehai Basin of the South China Sea. A comparative study was conducted to reveal the differences between the source-to-sink characteristics of the two gas-bearing and gravity-driven depositional systems to determine their provenances, formation mechanisms and migration paths as well as their key controlling factors. The heavy mineral assemblages and detrital zircon U-Pb dating results suggest that the Ledong channel was fed by the Hainan provenance from the eastern margin, whereas the Dongfang fan was supplied by northwestern terrigenous sources. The relative sea level transgression and sufficient sediment supply triggered the delivery of deltaic loads toward the continental shelves. Seismic data show that fracture activity had a great impact on the tectono-morphologic features of the margins. During downward flow, the gravity flow along the Yingdong Slope encountered steeply falling faulted slope break belts and formed the Ledong incised channel, and the gravity flow of the Yingxi Slope moved through the gently dipping flexural break slope zone and formed the Dongfang dispersed lobe deposits. Since ca. 30 Ma, the sedimentary center has been migrating from the north to the southeast, which produced a clear control of the southeastward distribution pattern of these two sedimentary systems. Observations of cores and thin sections indicate that the rock structures and their compositions are more mature in the Dongfang channel than in the Ledong fan. This study documents significant differences and similarities by comparing the source-to-sink processes of the two gravity-driven systems that developed in the Yinggehai Basin and provides analogies for understanding similar submarine sedimentary systems that developed under similar geological contexts worldwide. Fractionation of particles in deep‐water sediment gravity flows is an important factor in the resulting deposit and for discriminating sedimentary environments, but remains poorly understood. Quantitative characterization of particle shape was performed for more than ten‐thousand particles of experimental gravity flow experiments (both of cohesive and non‐cohesive nature) made using coal and kaolin particles. Eleven particle shape parameters were calculated and their distribution and trends within the experimental basin were evaluated. Results indicate the existence of non‐normal distributions and observable correlations between particle shape parameters. Shape parameters such as circularity and roundness are dominant controls on shape variation. Strong correlations exist between mean shape parameters and along‐flow distance from the source for particles in non‐cohesive flow experiments. Important differences were observed between shape parameter distributions of particles sampled at different areas within the experimental basin, which can be grouped based on their depositional setting (proximal or distal) using multivariate statistical analysis, especially for the non‐cohesive flow experiments. A tendency for more elongated and irregularly‐shaped particles at the more distal and marginal areas of the studied experimental basin was observed and validated by previous field studies in real‐world deep‐marine deposits. Besides, fractionation of particles is less‐pronounced in cohesive flows compared with non‐cohesive ones suggesting the soundness of discrimination of depositional settings based solely on particle shape characteristics is strongly dependent on parent flow characteristics. Yet, results highlight the potential of particle shape analysis in revealing spatial particle shape trends due to hydrodynamic fractionation and discriminating different depositional settings within submarine fans. Whereas the effects of high-order relative sea level change (3rd-order and higher) on the formation and architecture of submarine fan systems are relatively well established, a lack of large-scale spatial and temporal data has resulted in the impacts of low-order relative sea level change (i.e. , 2nd-order) eluding characterization. With the aim of revealing the impacts of 2nd-order relative sea level, this study applied regional-scale seismic geomorphology to examine 142 Miocene-aged (21–8.2 Ma) submarine fans in the Baiyun Sag of the Pearl River Mouth Basin (China), integrating a large 3D seismic volume (6000 km2), well logs and core data. By extracting seismic attributes calibrated to well data, architectural elements were interpreted, statistically correlated, and their evolution through time was assessed. The results were as follows: (1) architectural elements of submarine channels and lobes, as well as associated highstand deltas, shelf-margin deltas and incised valleys, were identified based on their seismic geomorphological features and location, revealing that submarine channels shift paleo-seaward from incised valleys and feed lobes; (2) there is a positive correlation between average width of submarine channels and average area of lobes, as well as between the average width of incised valleys and average width of submarine channels; (3) the size of architectural elements is inversely related to proportion of sand; and most importantly, (4) the size variation of architectural elements coincides with changes in 2nd-order relative sea level. Results also indicate that rapid tectonic subsidence played an important control on the size and sandiness of deep-water architectural elements. The fine siliciclastic rocks of the Early Permian Shoushangou Formation in West Ujimqin Banner, central Inner Mongolia are a hot spot for Late Paleozoic oil and gas exploration and hold key implications for the tectonic evolution during the closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean (PAO). Therefore, the sedimentary characteristics of the Shoushangou Formation in West Ujimqin Banner, along with the geochemical and Sm–Nd isotopic characteristics of the clastic rock samples in Well MXD1, were investigated to privde additional constraints on its provenance and tectonic background. The mudstones contain large proportions of quartz, feldspars and igneous debris, and the CIAcorr (0.52–0.66), the A–CN–K plot and the lack of Ce anomalies in REE show a weakly weathered provenance and the chemically unaltered parent rocks, suggestive of the proximal deposition and rapid burial. Slip-roll beddings, gravity flow, Bouma sequences and the (trace) fossil assemblages in the profile indicate that the Shoushangou Formation is mainly a shallow- (semi-)abyssal submarine fan and the lithological information indicates the presence of microfaces including main and lesser water supply channels, interchannels, lobes, natural levees. Furthermore, a narrow continental shelf above the submarine fan and the concentrated zircon age population of the Shoushangou formation suggest that the tectonic background is most likely a retroarc basin. The Al 2 O 3 /TiO 2 ratio (19–24, average 22), the multivariable principal element source identification diagram and the plots of Th/Sc vs. Zr/Sc and Co/Th vs. La/Sc indicate that the source is mainly felsic, with a minor proportion of intermediate rocks. Trace elemental characteristics (e.g., Th, Zr, Sc, Co, Nd, and REE) deomonstrate that the tectonic setting of the Shoushangou Formation is confined by continental arcs. The whole rock Sm–Nd isotopic spectra of the Carboniferous and Permian strata indicate that the Baolidao arc is the main source of central Inner Mongolia. Additionally, the comparison of the Nd model ages and the zircon U–Pb ages of the Baolidao arc and other entities in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) is in support of a prolonged subduction of the PAO since ∼510 Ma, suggesting that the Baolidao arc was developed from the southern continental arc of the original South Mongolia microcontinent. The sedimentology of upper flow regime bedforms represents an important research topic at the present. Deposits interpreted as those of supercritical flows are widely recognized in modern fan systems, but their recovery is challenging. Most of the sedimentological information has come from channel thalwegs but supercritical bedforms are also frequently downslope from the channel mouths. Such an environment has been identified in the Paola basin, where erosive and depositional cyclic steps have been imaged and identified in a sandy submarine lobe of the Amantea Fan. High-resolution sub-bottom profiles provide insight into the bedform internal architecture and their relationships with a frontally-confining ridge. For the first time, supercritical bedforms in a submarine lobe have been interpreted in two distinct positions: in the scour of an erosional cyclic step and in the stoss side of a depositional cyclic step. Coarse to medium-grained massive sand with flame structures, indicating rapid sediment fall-out and frequently associated with the occurrence of hydraulic jumps, has been identified in the scour and at the toe of the ridge. The latter represents an example of topographically induced hydraulic jumps driven by a frontal confinement. Top-cut-out medium to fine sands with tractive structures have been interpreted as the deposits related to the stoss side of a cyclic step or small-scale antidune superimposed on the cyclic step surface. The presented data broaden the understanding of the range of processes that are driven by the interaction between turbidity currents and seafloor topography and the dip of the slope. Extensive 2D multichannel seismic (~17340 km) and well data provide an opportunity to investigate the source to sink processes and triggering factors of the Late Miocene sedimentary record in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea (Sea of Japan). The sedimentary succession of the basin comprises two distinct deep-water depositional systems, which are characterised by stacked mass-transport deposits (MTDs) and subsequent submarine fan. Individual MTDs spread downslope over areas as large as ~9000 km2 with NW-SE or N-S flow direction. The deep-water fan consists of distributary channel-lobe complexes (DLCs) that are 80 km wide and 140 km long. Two major tectonic periods driven by structural deformation characterised the Late Miocene deep-water sedimentation growth. During early to middle Late Miocene (10.3-8.2 Ma), the MTDs were sourced from degraded fold triggered by slope oversteepening and seismicity on the southeastern basin margin, where the thrust-andfold belt developed. In the middle to latest Late Miocene (8.2-6.3 Ma), the DLCs were fed by canyon-channel systems on the southwestern basin margin, where the tectonic uplift of the anticline was active. Therefore, this study suggests that strike variation in shelf-margin erosional and depositional processes were caused principally by the locations and timings of tectonic deformation. Morphological scaling relationships between source‐to‐sink segments have been widely explored in modern settings, however, deep‐time systems remain difficult to assess due to limited preservation of drainage basins and difficulty in quantifying complex processes that impact sediment dispersals. Integration of core, well‐logs and 3‐D seismic data across the Dampier Sub‐basin, Northwest Shelf of Australia, enables a complete deep‐time source‐to‐sink study from the footwall (Rankin Platform) catchment to the hanging wall (Kendrew Trough) depositional systems in a Jurassic late syn‐rift succession. Hydrological analysis identifies 24 drainage basins on the J50.0 (Tithonian) erosional surface, which are delimited into six drainage domains confined by NNE‐SSW trending grabens and their horsts, with drainage domain areas ranging between 29 and 156 km2. Drainage outlets of these drainage domains are well preserved along the Rankin Fault System scarp, with cross‐sectional areas ranging from 0.08 to 0.31 km2. Corresponding to the six drainage domains, sedimentological and geomorphological analysis identifies six transverse submarine fan complexes developing in the Kendrew Trough, ranging in areas from 43 to 193 km2. Seismic geomorphological analysis reveals over 90‐km‐long, slightly sinuous axial turbidity channels, developing in the lower topography of the Kendrew Trough which erodes toe parts of transverse submarine fan complexes. Positive scaling relationships exist between drainage outlet spacing and drainage basin length, and drainage outlet cross‐sectional area and drainage basin area, which indicates the geometry of drainage outlets can provide important constraints on source area dimensions in deep‐time source‐to‐sink studies. The broadly negative bias of fan area to drainage basin area ratios indicates net sediment losses in submarine fan complexes caused by axial turbidity current erosion. Source‐to‐sink sediment balance studies must be done with full evaluating of adjacent source‐to‐sink systems to delineate fans and their associated up‐dip drainages, to achieve an accurate tectonic and sedimentologic picture of deep‐time basins. Sedimentological and sedimentary petrographic investigations of the Hamitabat Formation sandstones exhibited a huge submarine fan formation in the northwest of Thrace Basin. In this study reservoir properties of Hamitabat Formation were found out according to sedimentological storage, sedimentary petrographic and petrophysical properties of the sandstone-core samples taken from 16 wells in the northwest of the Thrace Basin. According to analyses of the lithology, sedimentologic structure, texture and sedimentary petrography of the well samples the Hamitabat Formation sandstones were separated into three distinct lithofacies (A, B, and C). Lithofacies A sandstones exhibit coarse grain sizes (0.5-1.0 mm), smooth-point grain contact, subrounded-subangular grains, moderate-bad sorting, and corresponds to upper part of submarine fan formation. Lithofacies B sandstones exhibit medium grain sizes (0.25-0.5 mm), subrounded-rounded grains, concave-convex grain contact, moderate-good sorting, and corresponds to middle part of submarine fan formation. Lithofacies C sandstones exhibit very fine grain sizes (0.12 mm<) corresponds to lower part of submarine fan formation, and nonreservoir facies. Lithofacies A sandstones have medium quality reservoir property due to abundance of cross bedding, higher clay content, less pore areas formed by secondary dissolution, low permeability (0.1-10 mD) and porosity (6-12%). Lithofacies B sandstones have better reservoir properties than Lithofacies A due to fewer clay content, large pore throat, high permeability (16-104 mD) and porosity (15-24%). Sedimentological and petrographic studies of the Haymana Formation sandstones identify a submarine fan in the Haymana Basin. This study is confined to outcrop samples from the submarine-fan sandstones (the L1, L2, and L3 sections) and focuses on documentation of the petrographic characteristics of and depositional controls on reservoir properties of the Haymana Formation sandstones. Analysis of the lithology, texture, sedimentary structure, and petrography of the outcrop samples allows separation of the Haymana Formation sandstones into three distinct lithofacies, A, B, and C. Lithofacies A sandstones exhibit medium-coarse grain sizes (0.4–0.6 mm), moderate-good sorting, and subrounded grains. Lithofacies B sandstones exhibit fine grain sizes (0.2 mm), moderate sorting, and subrounded-subangular grains. Lithofacies C sandstones exhibit very fine grain sizes (0.112 mm) and nonreservoir facies. The main aim of this study is to document the diagenetic history and reservoir quality of the Haymana Formation sandstones. Lithofacies A has the best permeability, ranging from 80 to 120 mD, which can be related to the large grain size, the presence of cross-bedding, small amount of authigenic clays or cements in the pore throats, and enlarged pore apertures. In contrast, Lithofacies B sandstones contain variable yet small pore and pore-throat sizes, which are affected by abundant pore-filling authigenic clays, small grain sizes, and no dissolution. The permeability of the Lithofacies B sandstone ranges from 16 to 35 mD, which is lower than that of the Lithofacies A sandstone. Additionally, the Lithofacies B sandstones have small median pore-throat sizes (mean = 1.52 μm) and low porosities (average 4–6%), and the Lithofacies A sandstones have large pore-throat sizes (mean = 2.06–3 μm) and high porosities (average 20–25%), with most pore throats (50% or more) ranging between 1 and 4 μm. According to these data, the Lithofacies A sandstones show good reservoir characterisation. To date, significant hydrocarbon deposits have not been discovered in the Haymana Formation sandstones, although intensive exploratory work towards this end has been carried out in the Haymana Basin. According to this study, the proximal sandstones of the submarine-fan complex of the Haymana Formation may contain high-potential reservoirs in the Haymana Basin. In the basin, hydrocarbon is sourced from deep zones and may be capped by the proximal part of the Haymana Formation sandstones. According to this study, the Lithofacies B sandstones of the Haymana Formation are not suitable as diagenetic traps for hydrocarbon exploration in the Haymana Basin. Submarine channel and fan deposits form the largest sediment accumulations on Earth and host significant reservoirs for hydrocarbons. While many studies of ancient fan deposits describe architectural variability along 2D transects (e.g. axis‐to‐fringe, proximal‐to‐distal), these relationships are often qualitative and are rarely quantified at the event‐bed scale. In order to enable quantitative comparison of the fine‐scale architecture of submarine depositional environments, 56 bed‐scale outcrop correlation panels from five broadly categorized environments (channel, levee, lobe, channel‐lobe transition zone, CLTZ and basin plain) were digitized. Measured architectural parameters (bed thickness, bed thinning rates, lateral correlation distance, net‐to‐gross) provide a large (n = 28,525) and statistically robust framework to compare event‐bed architectures within and between environments. "Thinning rate" data (i.e. the lateral rate of change of bed thickness) clearly differentiate deposits from different submarine depositional environments, helping to quantify generally accepted models for proximal‐to‐distal evolution of stratigraphic architecture. The thinning rates of sandstone beds and mudstone‐dominated intervals vary predictably between environments. For example, the highest sandstone thinning rates occur in channel deposits (0.2–6 cm/m; P10 and P90 values here and below) and decrease to lobe (0.1–1.6 cm/m), CLTZ (0.2–0.9 cm/m), levee (0.0024–0.078 cm/m) and basin‐plain deposits (0.000017–0.0054 cm/m). These quantitative relationships provide valuable insights for downslope flow evolution and the construction of stratigraphic architecture in submarine settings. Due to intra‐environment variability, net‐to‐gross is highly variable and thus (when considered alone) is not a diagnostic indicator of depositional environment. Submarine lobe deposits show the most variability in event bed thickness, thinning rate and net‐to‐gross, likely due to the inherent facies variability and differing boundary conditions. To explore this variability, lobe deposits were sub‐classified based on position (proximal, distal) and effective confinement (unconfined, semiconfined, confined) to provide a more detailed sub‐environment analysis. Unconfined lobe deposits show a proximal‐to‐distal increase in sandstone thickness and decrease in mudstone thickness, supporting conceptual models. Confined lobe deposits have thicker sandstone and mudstone beds and lower net‐to‐gross values as compared to unconfined and semiconfined lobes, supporting a sediment trapping mechanism by confinement. These quantified bed‐scale parameter comparisons enable the recognition of architectural similarities and differences within and between environments, demonstrating the need for more quantitative studies of bed‐scale heterogeneity. The results from this study are immediately applicable to parameterizing forward stratigraphic models, constraining property distribution in reservoir models, and probabilistic determination of depositional environment from outcrop and core descriptions of submarine depositional environments. The reservoir in the upper Miocene Huangliu Formation, in the Yinggehai Basin, is composed of submarine fan deposits with burial depths from 2600m to 3500m. This paper presents an integrated method in provenance analysis by using data of petrography, heavy mineral assemblages, and geochemical compositions. The analysis produced a number of key results. First, two provenances exist, one in the west and the other in the east. Second, the submarine fan sandstone exhibits low percentages of zircon, tourmaline and garnet, whereas the neritic sandbar rocks exhibit high percentages of zircon, tourmaline and leucoxene, and low percentages of magnetite and garnet. Third, the Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) values and Rb/Sr ratios of the submarine fan sandstone indicate moderate weathering intensity in the source region. SiO2/Al2O3 ratios indicate moderate sediment maturity. Similar rare earth element patterns of the submarine fan sandstone samples from three wells indicate a common provenance. Th-Sc, Co/Th-La/Sc and REE patterns point to derivation from felsic source rocks. Fourth, the integrated method and comparison of REE patterns of the submarine fan sandstone with that of possible adjacent source rocks indicates that the submarine fan sandstone most probably derived from the western Kuntum uplift. It is concluded that the integration of petrological composition of the sandstone, the heavy mineral assemblage and major and trace elements geochemistry is useful for provenance identification. Abstract: The Izumi Group in southwestern Japan is considered to represent deposits in a forearc basin along an active volcanic arc during the late Late Cretaceous. The group consists mainly of felsic volcanic and plutonic detritus, and overlies a Lower to Upper Cretaceous plutono‐metamorphic complex (the Ryoke complex). In order to reconstruct the depositional environments and constrain the age of deposition, sedimentary facies and U–Pb dating of zircon grains in tuff were studied for a drilled core obtained from the basal part of the Izumi Group. On the basis of the lithofacies associations, the core was subdivided into six units from base to top, as follows: mudstone‐dominated unit nonconformably deposited on the Ryoke granodiorite; tuffaceous mudstone‐dominated unit; tuff unit; tuffaceous sandstone–mudstone unit; sandstone–mudstone unit; and sandstone‐dominated unit. This succession suggests that the depositional system changed from non‐volcanic muddy slope or basin floor, to volcaniclastic sandy submarine fan. Based on a review of published radiometric age data of the surrounding region of the Ryoke complex and the Sanyo Belt which was an active volcanic front during deposition of the Izumi Group, the U–Pb age (82.7 ±0.5 Ma) of zircon grains in the tuff unit corresponds to those of felsic volcanic and pyroclastic rocks in the Sanyo Belt. Submarine fans in tectonically active continental-slope basins are targets of petroleum exploration and production. These slope fans commonly comprise compensationally stacked sandy and muddy architectural elements, including mass-transport deposits, weakly confined to distributary channel-and-lobe deposits, and leveed-channel deposits. The lateral continuity and vertical connectivity of these architectural elements are important uncertainties in reservoir characterization that influence fluid-flow behavior during hydrocarbon production. Here, we use a simple forward stratigraphic model to simulate the stratigraphic patterns and illuminate the likely distribution of fine-scale, sub-seismic heterogeneity in a slope fan. We used published seismic-reflection horizons from the tectonically active Columbus basin, offshore Trinidad, to define the top and base of a Pleistocene submarine fan. We then simulated the stratigraphic evolution of the slope fan with a series of DionisosFlow™ forward stratigraphic models. All variables were kept constant during the simulations in order to test the hypothesis that the autogenic evolution of the surface topography alone, as a result of erosion and deposition, can produce compensational-stacking patterns common in submarine fans. A reference-case model is similar to the thickness trend of published isochron maps of the Trinidad slope fan. The reference-case model also produced patterns of compensational stacking. Varying the time step impacts the heterogeneity of the model. Shorter time steps are characterized by less sediment accumulation, which results in less sediment diversion during the subsequent time step, more gradual migration of channel deposits, shorter offset distances of depocenters, and shorter length-scale heterogeneity compared to longer time steps. Thus, a key characteristic of slope-fan deposits is autogenic compensational stacking, without any external forcing, which governs heterogeneity in these reservoirs. Furthermore, our results suggest that relatively simple diffusion-based models can produce realistic compensation patterns and future work will be focused on higher-resolution model calibration to seismic-reflection data and the influence of input variables on heterogeneity of channel-and-lobe deposits of slope fans. Hybrid event beds (HEBs) record disequilibrium in submarine fan evolution attributed to mud-forced dampening turbulence, which could be caused by allogenic and autogenic forcings in either the proximal or distal segment of a lobe-dominated submarine fan on several timescales. Detailed field investigation combined with petrographic and mineralogical analysis of selected outcrop samples indicate that the Upper Triassic submarine fan succession mainly comprises turbidites, HEBs, and debrites in the West Qinling (WQ) area of NE Tibetan Plateau. Five types of HEBs are recognized based on the thickness, sedimentary structure, and texture. Bed-by-bed description and measurement reveal that these HEBs show a distinct distribution pattern throughout the submarine fan succession, including dominance of HEB-1 and HEB-2 beds (∼71.50%) in distributary channel to lobe off-axis (FA1–FA3) and significant portion of HEB-3 to HEB-5 beds (∼54.22%) in lobe fringe to lobe distal fringe environments (FA4–FA5). Textural and petrographic characteristics of mudclasts suggest disaggregation of heterolithic, homogenous and less cohesive mudclasts (MC-1 to MC-4 type) within H1b and H3 interval of HEBs, which could play different roles in the longitudinal mud-driven flow transformation between turbulent and laminar flow behavior patterns. The vertical distributions of the HEB-prone succession are characterized by four types of depositional scenarios, which yields significant allogenic and autogenic signatures combined with the recognition of the dominant HEB types and thickening- or thinning-upward trend of the vertically stacked submarine lobes. This study can enhance our understandings of flow transformation of sediment gravity flows (SGF) along the eastern margin of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean based on the anatomy of several undiscovered deep-water outcrops, which were reflected by the initiation, gradual switching, and avulsion of the high-frequency submarine fan evolution during the Late Triassic. • HEBs are well developed both in proximal and distal parts of the submarine fan. • Various types of mudclasts play different roles in the mud-driven transformation. • Vertical distribution of HEBs records high-frequency change in the submarine fan. Over thirty stratigraphic sections of the Himalaya orogen Upper Triassic Langjiexue Group in southern Tibet, China, were studied to interpret the environments and lithofacies. The facies associations channel (A), lobe (B), levee-interchannel (C), and basin plain (D) with nine facies (A1–3, B1–3, and C1–3) were distinguished. They form six architectural elements: channel-interchannel, overbank-levee, crevasse-splay, outer fan-lobe, fan-fringe, and basin plain. Taking into account the facies analysis, (sub-) deposystem correlation, paleocurrent dispersal pattern, and restoration of primary stratal width, the Langjiexue Group displays the architecture of a coalescing submarine fan-dominated deep sea deposystem, measuring about 400–500 km × 600–700 km in size or even more, one of the largest pre-Cenozoic submarine fans ever reported. Subdivisionally, four fans, lacking inner fans, could have coalesced laterally within the submarine fan deposystem, and at least six submarine fan developments were vertically succeeded by mid- to outer-fan deposits with progradational to retrogradational successions. According to the range of 30–70% of sandstone content, the fan deposystem is mud- and sand-rich, suggesting a medium-far (over 400–600 km) transport of sediment from the source area. Submarine fan channel reservoirs exhibit strong heterogeneity not only on channel architecture but also on the qualities of reservoirs, which can exert direct control over the fluid flow and remaining oil distribution during oilfield development. However, the distribution of the variations in the reservoir quality within submarine fan channel systems is poorly understood. This paper, which takes the submarine fan channel reservoirs of the X oilfield in the Niger Delta Basin as an example, aims to study the variations in reservoir qualities and the controlling mechanisms within a sinuous deep-water channel system. The studies are based on the integration of core analysis, well-logging interpretation, seismic inversion and interpretation constrained by channel architecture. The results show that variations in the reservoir quality within a sinuous deep-water channel system are primarily controlled by rock texture, lithofacies (association) and channel architecture under the circumstance of weak diagenesis. (1) The grain sorting and clay content mainly control the reservoir's porosity and permeability, respectively, while the relationship between grain size and the reservoir's properties is complicated because of the strong heterogeneity in the rock textures for different lithofacies. Cross-laminated fine sandstones have the highest porosity because of their good sorting, while massive medium to coarse sandstones have the highest permeability because of their low clay content. (2) Channel fillings are divided into four types (Type I – Type IV), which bear different reservoir qualities according to the lithofacies associations. Within a complete channel system, the channel fill types evolve progressively upward as the dominant gravity flow types evolve, which leads to the vertical differential distribution of porosity and permeability. (3) The relatively high porosity-permeability zones in the plane of a channel belt exhibit two patterns: multiple lenticular strips and single lenticular strips, which are controlled by the channel's architecture. Multibeam swath bathymetry survey was carried out in the middle Indus fan region in the eastern Arabian Sea. Using high-resolution bathymetry data, major morphological features such as the Raman seamount and the Laxmi ridge have been mapped. This study also reveals the presence of sinuous channel systems, continuing towards the distal fan. Though there are several reports on the presence of channels in different regions of the Indus fan, we report here the presence of active channels to the east of the Laxmi ridge. The total length of all channels along the channel axis is about 915 km. The individual spreads of the channels vary from 189.8 to 1980.5 m. Most of the channels are shallow with the average depth measuring about 60 m. The longest channel is about 256.3 km long, 702 m wide and about 57 m deep. The channels observed are similar to the land-based fluvial channels. The channels identified are highly sinuous in nature, their meanders and cut-off meanders are similar to the characteristics of fluvial channels. The canyon mouth is an important component of submarine-fan systems and is thought to play a significant role in the transformation of turbidity currents. However, the depositional and erosional structures that characterize canyon mouths have received less attention than other components of submarine-fan systems. This study investigates the facies organization and geometry of turbidites that are interpreted to have developed at a canyon mouth in the early Pleistocene Kazusa forearc basin on the Boso Peninsula, Japan. The canyon-mouth deposits have the following distinctive features: (i) The turbidite succession is thinner than both the canyon-fill and submarine-fan successions and is represented by amalgamation of sandstones and pebbly sandstones as a result of bypassing of turbidity currents. (ii) Sandstone beds and bedsets show an overall lenticular geometry and are commonly overlain by mud drapes, which are massive and contain fewer bioturbation structures than do the hemipelagic muddy deposits. (iii) The mud drapes have a microstructure characterized by aggregates of clay particles, which show features similar to those of fluid-mud deposits, and are interpreted to represent deposition from fluid mud developed from turbidity current clouds. (iv) Large-scale erosional surfaces are infilled with thick-bedded to very thick-bedded turbidites, which show lithofacies quite similar to those of the surrounding deposits, and are considered to be equivalent to scours. (v) Concave-up erosional surfaces, some of which face in the upslope direction, are overlain by backset bedding, which is associated with many mud clasts. (vi) Tractional structures, some of which are equivalent to coarse-grained sediment waves, were also developed, and were overlain locally by mud drapes, in association with mud drape-filled scours, cut and fill structures and backset bedding. Abstract: Turbidity currents, and other types of underwater sediment density flow, are arguably the most important flow process for moving sediment across our planet. Direct monitoring provides the most reliable information on the varied ways in which these flows are triggered, and thus forms the basis for this contribution. Recent advances in flow monitoring make this contribution timely, although monitoring is biased towards more frequent flow types. Submarine deltas fed by bedload dominated rivers can be very active with tens of events each year. Larger events are generated by delta-lip failures, whilst smaller events can be associated with motion of up-slope migrating bedforms. River-fed submarine canyons are flushed every few years by powerful long run-out flows. Flows in river-fed delta and canyon systems tend to occur during months of elevated river discharge. However, many flows do not coincide with flood peaks, or occur where rivers do not reach hyperpycnal concentrations, and are most likely triggered by failure of rapidly deposited sediment. Plunging of hyperpycnal river floodwater commonly triggers dilute and slow moving flows in lakes and reservoirs, and has been shown to produce mm-thick fine-grained deposits. It is proposed here that such thin and fine deposits are typical of flows triggered by hyperpycnal river floods, rather than thicker sand layers with traction structure or displaying inverse-to-normal grading. Oceanographic canyons are detached from river mouths and fed by oceanographic processes (wave and tide resuspension, longshore drift, etc.). Most events in these canyons are associated with large wave heights. Up-slope migrating crescentic bedforms are seen, similar to those observed in river-fed deltas. Oceanographic processes tend to infill canyons, which are flushed episodically by much more powerful flows, inferred to result from slope failure. This filling and flushing model is less applicable to river-fed canyons in which flushing events are much more frequent. Oceanographic canyons may result from rapid sea level rise that detaches river mouths from canyon heads, and they can remain active during sea level highstands. Deep-water basin plains are often dominated by infrequent but very large flows triggered by failure of the continental slope. Recurrence intervals of these flows appear almost random, and only weakly (if at all) correlated with sea level change. Turbidites can potentially provide a valuable long-term record of major earthquakes, but widespread slope failure is the only reliable criteria for inferring seismic triggering. Abstract: Subaqueous sediment density flows are one of the volumetrically most important processes for moving sediment across our planet, and form the largest sediment accumulations on Earth (submarine fans). They are also arguably the most sparely monitored major sediment transport processes on our planet. Significant advances have been made in documenting their timing and triggers, especially within submarine canyons and delta-fronts, and freshwater lakes and reservoirs, but the sediment concentration of flows that run out beyond the continental slope has never been measured directly. This limited amount of monitoring data contrasts sharply with other major types of sediment flow, such as river systems, and ensure that understanding submarine sediment density flows remains a major challenge for Earth science. The available monitoring data define a series of flow types whose character and deposits differ significantly. Large (>100km3) failures on the continental slope can generate fast-moving (up to 19m/s) flows that reach the deep ocean, and deposit thick layers of sand across submarine fans. Even small volume (0.008km3) canyon head failures can sometimes generate channelised flows that travel at >5m/s for several hundred kilometres. A single event off SE Taiwan shows that river floods can generate powerful flows that reach the deep ocean, in this case triggered by failure of recently deposited sediment in the canyon head. Direct monitoring evidence of powerful oceanic flows produced by plunging hyperpycnal flood water is lacking, although this process has produced shorter and weaker oceanic flows. Numerous flows can occur each year on river-fed delta fronts, where they can generate up-slope migrating crescentic bedforms. These flows tend to occur during the flood season, but are not necessarily associated with individual flood discharge peaks, suggesting that they are often triggered by delta-front slope failures. Powerful flows occur several times each year in canyons fed by sand from the shelf, associated with strong wave action. These flows can also generate up-slope migrating crescentic bedforms that most likely originate due to retrogressive breaching associated with a dense near-bed layer of sediment. Expanded dilute flows that are supercritical and fully turbulent are also triggered by wave action in canyons. Sediment density flows in lakes and reservoirs generated by plunging river flood water have been monitored in much greater detail. They are typically very dilute (<0.01vol.% sediment) and travel at <50cm/s, and are prone to generating interflows within the density stratified freshwater. A key objective for future work is to develop measurement techniques for seeing through overlying dilute clouds of sediment, to determine whether dense near-bed layers are present. There is also a need to combine monitoring of flows with detailed analyses of flow deposits, in order to understand how flows are recorded in the rock record. Abstract: Facies architecture of submarine fans and channel–levee complexes in the Eastern Black Sea Basin and their evolution from the Late Miocene until the present day are studied using a three-dimensional seismic data set covering an area of approximately 1161 km2. The interpretation of the observations reveals the outcome of the changing interplay between rate of sedimentation and compressional tectonism in the area through time. The Upper Tertiary sedimentary succession in the Eastern Black Sea Basin is characterized by various depositional elements of northeasterly sourced turbidite systems that were deposited in a progressively deforming basin at settings ranging from lower to upper slope. Depositional elements interpreted from seismic character and geometry include canyons, canyon-confined channels, levees, mass transport complexes, sediment waves, sheets and hemipelagic drapes. Two anticlines formed in a compressional tectonic regime subdividing the study area into three mini-basins acted as sediment barriers and controlled the geometry of the basin, and thus, the accommodation space, throughout the Plio-Quaternary period. Sheets that were deposited due to abrupt reduction in structural slope gradients and knickpoints that mark the boundary between site of incision and site of deposition within canyons both have displayed southwestward migration through time, which clearly reflects the basinward advance of compressional deformation in the Eastern Black Sea Basin. The Marnoso-arenacea Formation in the Italian Apennines is the only ancient rock sequence where individual submarine sediment density flow deposits have been mapped out in detail for over 100 km. Bed correlations provide new insight into how submarine flows deposit sand, because bed architecture and sandstone shape provide an independent test of depositional process models. This test is important because it can be difficult or impossible to infer depositional process unambiguously from characteristics seen at just one outcrop, especially for massive clean-sandstone intervals whose origin has been controversial. Beds have three different types of geometries (facies tracts) in downflow oriented transects. Facies tracts 1 and 2 contain clean graded and ungraded massive sandstone deposited incrementally by turbidity currents, and these intervals taper relatively gradually downflow. Mud-rich sand deposited by cohesive debris flow occurs in the distal part of Facies tract 2. Facies tract 3 contains clean sandstone with a distinctive swirly fabric formed by patches of coarser and better-sorted grains that most likely records pervasive liquefaction. This type of clean sandstone can extend for up to 30 km before pinching out relatively abruptly. This abrupt pinch out suggests that this clean sand was deposited by debris flow. In some beds there are downflow transitions from turbidite sandstone into clean debrite sandstone, suggesting that debris flows formed by transformation from high-density turbidity currents. However, outsize clasts in one particular debrite are too large and dense to have been carried by an initial turbidity current, suggesting that this debris flow ran out for at least 15 km. Field data indicate that liquefied debris flows can sometimes deposit clean sand over large (10 to 30 km) expanses of sea floor, and that these clean debrite sand layers can terminate abruptly. Analysis of tectonic-sedimentary setting and facies based on cores and well logging shows that Lower Devonian F4 unit is submarine fan that can be divided into two cycles by correlating a fan-wide marine mud datum named middle mud. The association of lithofacies forms five facies, including slump, braided channel complex and depositional channel, channel-distal lobe, turbidity-sheet sand, and hemipelagic deposits. Mapping intrafan units reveals an aggradational–retrogradational stacking pattern of the F4 unit, which is a multiple point source sand-rich fan who supplied from northwest, southeast, and south. Abstract: The Cretaceous to Eocene aged Basque Basin in northern Spain preserves a variety of submarine fan related environments of deposition in well exposed outcrops. Here, quantitative trace fossil data is calibrated to sedimentologically defined environments of deposition. Nine environments of deposition are assigned according to sedimentary facies associations, depositional architecture and stratigraphic context. The preserved trace fossil assemblages are interpreted in terms of extrinsic palaeoecological, and intrinsic taphonomical and depositional environment controls. In channel related environments, diverse pre-depositional dominated assemblages are prevalent in marginal settings. These are replaced by low diversity post-depositional dominated assemblages in more axial positions within the system. Lobe related environments display a higher level of diversity and bioturbation intensity in more distal/off axis (lobe fringe) environments compared to the most axial lobe environments that preserve low diversity, and exclusively post-depositional assemblages (dominated by Ophiomorpha). Diverse pre- and post-depositional assemblages are common in fan fringe deposits, with less diverse assemblages dominated by post-depositional ichnotaxa (particularly Zoophycos) in basin floor fan deposits. The use of ‘sub-ichnofacies’ is found to only aid characterisation of trace fossil assemblages based on a general (proximal–distal) position within a submarine fan system. Tier preservation of trace fossil assemblages is almost exclusively determined by the depth of erosion that a substrate is subjected to. As such, colonisation style (pre- versus post depositional) and ethological groupings are proposed as being the most powerful tool in assisting sedimentological observations in assigning environments of deposition. Abstract: The West Crocker Formation (Oligocene–Early Miocene), NW Borneo, consists of a large (>20 000 km2) submarine fan deposited as part of an accretionary complex. A range of gravity-flow deposits are observed, the most significant of which are mud-poor, massive sandstones interpreted as turbidites and clast-rich, muddy sandstones and sandy mudstones interpreted as debrites. An upward transition from turbidite to debrite is commonly observed, with the contact being either gradational and planar, or sharp and highly erosive. Based on their repeated vertical relationship and the nature of the contact between them, these intervals are interpreted as being deposited from one flow event which consisted of two distinct flow phases: fully turbulent turbidity current and weakly turbulent to laminar debris flow. The associated bed is called a co-genetic turbidite–debrite, with the upper debrite interval termed a linked debrite. Linked debrites are best developed in the non-channellised parts of the fan system, and are absent to poorly-developed in the proximal channel-levee and distal basin floor environments. Due to outcrop limitations, the genesis of linked debrites within the West Crocker Formation is unclear. Based on clast size and type, it seems likely that a weakly turbulent to laminar debris-flow flow phase was present when the flow event entered the basin. A change in flow behaviour may have led to deposition of a sand-rich unit with ‘turbidite’ characteristics, which was subsequently overlain by a mud-rich unit with ‘debrite’ characteristics. Flow transformation may have been enhanced by the disintegration and incorporation into the flow of muddy clasts derived from the upstream channel floor, channel mouth or from channel-levee collapse. Lack of preservation of this debrite in proximal areas may indicate either bypass of this flow phase or that the available outcrops fail to capture the debris flow entry point. Establishing robust sedimentological criteria from a variety of datasets may lead to the increasing recognition of co-genetic turbidite-debrite beds, and an increased appreciation of the importance of bipartite flows in the transport and deposition of sediments in deepwater environments. Abstract: We have integrated the relatively unknown distal domains of the Lower Congo basin, where the main depocenters of the Congo submarine fan are located, with the better-constrained successions on the shelf and upper slope, through the analysis of thousands of km of 2D seismic reflection profiles off-shore the Congo–Angola passive margin. The basin architecture is depicted by two ca. 800-km-long regional cross sections through the northern (Congo) and southern (Angola) margin. A large unit deposited basinward of the Aptian salt limit is likely to be the abyssal-plain equivalent of the upper-Cretaceous carbonate shelf that characterized the first post-rift deposits in West-equatorial African margins. A latest-Turonian shelf-deepening event is recorded in the abyssal plain as a long period (Coniacian–Eocene) of condensed sedimentation and basin starvation. The onset of the giant Tertiary Congo deep-sea fan in early Oligocene following this event reactivates the abyssal plain as the main depocenter of the basin. The time–space partitioning of sedimentation within the deep-sea fan results from the interplay among increasing sediment supply, margin uplift, rise of the Angola salt ridge, and canyon incision throughout the Neogene. Oligocene–early Miocene turbidite sedimentation occurs mainly in NW–SE grabens and ponded inter-diapir basins on the southern margin (Angola). Seaward tilting of the margin and downslope salt withdrawal activates the up-building of the Angola escarpment, which leads to a northward (Congo) shift of the transfer zones during late Miocene. Around the Miocene–Pliocene boundary, the incision of the Congo submarine canyon confines the turbidite flows and drives a general basinward progradation of the submarine fan into the abyssal plain The slope deposition is dominated by fine-grained hemipelagic deposits ever since. Results from this work contribute to better understand the signature in the ultra-deep deposits of processes acting on the continental margin as well as the basin-wide sediment redistribution in areas of high river input. The Gildirli Formation is the oldest Neogene rock unit in the Adana Basin and was formed prior to the regionally extensive Early Miocene marine transgression. These coarse clastic red-beds provide important evidence about the causes and early phases of filling in this large trough, because the Gildirli Formation sediments fill an irregular palaeotopography carved out of Palaeozoic and Mesozoic basement rocks. Detailed study of the Gildirli Formation reveals the existence of at least two alluvial fans supplied from different source areas. A northeastern fan, exposed around Gildirli Village, was fed by streams draining an area of ophiolitic mélange, Mesozoic and older limestones, and fills an irregular palaeomorphology around and northeast of Gildirli. The southwestern fan, in the Nergizlik area, is dominated by debris flow and sheet flow rudites derived from an area of entirely carbonate bedrock. The lower part of the southwestern fan is characterised by well-bedded carbonate breccias and conglomerates that occupy deep, steep-sided palaeovalleys with approximate E-W trends (parallelling the main basin-margin), whereas higher parts of this fan are muddier and show channelised fluvial and floodplain attributes. The two fans display different provenance characteristics and evidently were fed into an intervening pre-existing depression, probably tectonically controlled. The Lower to Middle Miocene sediments that succeed the Gildirli Formation fan clastics on this basin margin form a mosaic of facies associations, partly contemporaneous and partly diachronous. These include a mixed clastic-carbonate unit (Kaplankaya Formation) of mainly shallow marine character, a reefal to platform carbonate unit (Karaisalı Formation), and a coarse clastic submarine fan system (Cingöz Formation) together with its coeval deep-marine shales (Güvenç Formation). The limestone bodies of the Karaisah Formation in this area display clinoformal geometries that accord with a backstepping pattern and also attest to pre-existing fault control of the steep basin margin. The western part of the partly contemporaneous Cingöz Formation submarine fan system has been supplied through a feeder-channel that now occupies the palaeovalley depression inherited from pre-Gildirli Formation times, The palaeovalley system shows a margin-parallel trend and might have been developed before the deposition of the Gildirli Formation by extensional tectonics. Thus the location, geometry and orientation of this sector of the mid-Miocene submarine fan appears to have been determined by the tectonically mediated pre-Miocene/Early Miocene palaeomorphology. Seismic reflection data from drifting ice stations and an icebreaker survey document the presence of a submarine fan along the east flank of the Lomonosov Ridge in the Amundsen Basin, Arctic Ocean. The fan extends from a source area at the North Greenland and Canadian Arctic continental margin to the North Pole. The fan probably developed in response to the combined effect of increased glacial sediment input during the Plio–Pleistocene and topographically confined transport of glacial debris in the deep sea passage between Lincoln Sea margin and the southern end of the Lomonosov Ridge. Recent studies of turbidite bed thickness distributions have demonstrated power-law as well as log-normal statistical distributions. The different distributions may reflect different fan processes and environments and, therefore, could be used as a quantitative method to help identify those environments, including those devoid of sequential patterns. The cumulative distributions of well-known turbidite deposits spanning a range of interpreted fan subenvironments are used to illustrate the potential correlation between cumulative distribution and environments. Assuming that power-law distributions may, for some systems, be the primary input signal, one-dimensional modelling allows semi-quantitative characterization of the effects of different fan processes such as erosion and bed amalgamation. Environments indicative of different fan processes may be characterized based on the degree to which processes have acted as a ‘filter’ to modify the assumed power-law distribution systematically. Submarine canyons play a major role in sediment transfer to the deep sea. When connected with fluvial systems, they can produce large submarine fans, whose sandy bodies have a high potential as petroleum reservoirs. Although canyon-river connections are common on passive margins during lowstands, they are rare during highstands. So far, the only canyon in the Western South Atlantic to have exhibited continuous river connection throughout the Quaternary, regardless of sea level position, is the São Francisco Canyon (SFC) in eastern Brazil. In this study, we used multibeam and 3D seismic records integrated with previously published data to investigate the reasons for the continuous canyon-river connection in the area of the São Francisco River. The SFC comprises two compartments: The Upper and the Mid Canyon. The Upper Canyon indents 15 km of the shelf and acts as an erosive feeder trunk to the São Francisco Submarine Fan. When it emerges on the continental slope (Mid Canyon), depositional processes dominate; the canyon now begins to meander and the thalweg is bordered by numerous terraces and levees. Five stratigraphic units have accumulated in the region of the canyon head since the beginning of the Oligocene. Initially, sedimentation had a uniform aggradational character (Unit 1), which later became more discontinuous in association with the development of reef build-ups (Unit 2) and of a low-lying area around the canyon head. This depression was partially infilled by siliciclastics (Unit 3) and later incised by a precursor of the SFC (Unit 4). The depression still has a morphological expression in the shelf nowadays as a bathymetric low (BL), within which the São Francisco River has built its delta (Unit 5). We hypothesize that the origin and evolution of the SFC is associated with three main factors: (i) breaching by the canyon head of thick carbonates rimming the shelf break; (ii) development of the shelf depression referred above; and (iii) major continental drainage reorganization. Continuous canyon-river connection was ensured by this shelf depression, which helped funnel siliciclastic sediments to the canyon and precluded lateral changes to the lower river trunk. Morphological features, such as axial incision of mass movement deposits is suggestive of some, although very limited, modern canyon activity. The uppermost Quaternary deposits of the Hueneme and Dume submarine fans in the Santa Monica Basin have been investigated using a closed-spaced grid of boomer seismic-reflection profiles, which give vertical resolution of a few tens of centimetres with acoustic penetration to 50 m. Acoustic facies integrated with geometry define six architectural elements, some with discrete subelements that are of a scale that can be recognized in outcrops of ancient turbidite systems. In the Santa Monica Basin, the relationship of these elements to fan morphology, stratigraphy and sediment source is precisely known. The width of upper Hueneme fan valley has been reduced from 5 km since the last glacial maximum to 1 km at present by construction of laterally confined sandy levees within the main valley. The middle fan comprises three main subelements: thick sand deposits at the termination of the fan valley, low-gradient sandy lobes typically 5 km long and < 10 m thick, and scoured lobes formed of alternating sand and mud beds with many erosional depressions. The site of thickest lobe sediment accumulation shifts through time, with each sand bed deposited in a previous bathymetric low (i.e. compensation cycles). The lower fan and basin plain consists of sheet-like alternations of sand and mud with shallow channels and lenses. Variations in the rate of late Quaternary sea level rise initiated changes in sediment facies distribution. At lowstand, and during the approximately 11 ka stillstand in sea level, the Hueneme Fan was fed largely by hyperpycnal flow from the Santa Clara River delta, depositing high sediment waves on the right hand levee and thick sandy lobes on the middle fan. At highstand of sea level, most turbidity currents were generated by failure of silty prodelta muds.
