In the Ionian Sea (central Mediterranean) the slow convergence between Africa and Eurasia results in the formation of a narrow subduction zone. The nature of the crust of the subducting plate remains debated and could represent the last remnants of the Neo-Tethys ocean. The origin of the Ionian basin is also under discussion, especially concerning the rifting mechanisms as the Malta Escarpment could represent a remnant of this opening. This subduction retreats toward the south-east (motion occurring since the last 35 Ma) but is confined to the narrow Ionian basin. A major lateral slab tear fault is required to accommodate the slab rollback.This fault is thought to propagate along the eastern Sicily margin but its precise location remains controversial.This PhD project focussed on the deep sedimentary and crustal structures of the eastern Sicily margin and the Malta Escarpment (ME). Two two-dimensional P wave velocity models were modelled by forward Modelling of wide-angle seismic data, acquired onboard the R/V Meteor during the DIONYSUS cruise in 2014.A 3D gravity model of the region was also performed to constrain the depth of the subducting slab bellow the Calabro-Peloritan backstops. The seismicity of the three structures identified in the velocity models (ME, Alfeo fault System, Ionian Fault System) permits to study their recent activity. The results image an oceanic crust within the Ionian basin as well as the deep structure of the Malta Escarpment, which presents characteristics of a transform margin. A deep and asymmetrical sedimentary basin is imaged south of the Messina strait and seems to have opened between the Calabrian and Peloritan continental terranes. In the western lobe of the Calabrian accretionary prism, the southern velocity model allows to observe the indentation of the internal clastic wedge into the external evaporitic wedge, thus showing the recent activity of this lobe. The interpretation of the velocity models suggests that the major STEP fault is located east of the Malta Escarpment, along the Alfeo Fault System., Le bassin Ionien, en Méditerranée centrale, abrite une zone de subduction à vergence Nord-Ouest où la plaque Afrique plonge sous les blocs Calabro-Péloritain au Nord-Est de la Sicile. Cette subduction résulte de la lente convergence entre les plaques tectoniques Afrique et Eurasiatique. Bien que de nombreuses campagnes d’exploration scientifique ont été menées dans cette zone particulière, plusieurs questions géodynamiques restent débattues. Tout d’abord la croûte pavant le bassin Ionien pourrait être soit de nature continentale amincie et représenter une extension de la plaque Afrique, soit océanique (Néo-Téthys) faisant de ce bassin l’un des plus anciens domaines océaniques au monde. L’escarpement de Malte représente un vestige de l’ouverture du bassin, mais les mécanismes de rifting et notamment la géométrie d’ouverture du bassin restent débattus. Cette subduction est en retrait vers le Sud-Est depuis les derniers 35 Ma, mais est aujourd’hui confinée à l’étroit bassin Ionien. Afin d’accommoder ce retrait de la plaque plongeante dans le bassin, une grande faille de déchirure lithosphérique de bord de subduction (STEP fault en anglais pour « subduction Transform Edge Propagator ») doit se propager le long de la marge Est-Sicilienne. Cependant, sa position en surface reste difficile à déterminer dans l’épais prisme d’accrétion recouvrant le bassin. Ces questions ont été explorées par modélisation des données de sismique grand angle de la campagne DIONYSUS (Octobre 2014, R/V Meteor) le long de deux profils perpendiculaires à la marge Est-Sicilienne. Des modélisations gravimétriques en 3D ont aussi été réalisées dans le but de localiser la plaque plongeante en profondeur sous les blocs Calabro-Péloritains. La sismicité des trois structures majeures du bassin : l’escarpement de Malte, l’AFS (Alfeo Fault System), et l’IFS (Ionian Fault System) a permis d’étudier leurs activités à l’actuel. Les résultats obtenus permettent d’observer une croûte océanique au fond du bassin. La structure profonde de l’escarpement de Malte est observée comme une zone d’amincissement crustal abrupt, ce qui est caractéristique des marges transformantes. Un profond bassin sédimentaire asymétrique (11 km) est observé au Sud du détroit de Messine. Il s’est probablement ouvert récemment entre les blocs continentaux Péloritain et Calabre. Dans le lobe Ouest du prisme d’accrétion Calabrais, le modèle de vitesse permet d’observer l’indentation du prisme clastique interne dans le prisme évaporitique externe. Des modélisations analogiques utilisant sable et silicone ont permis de démontrer la récente activité de ce lobe. L’interprétation des modèles de vitesse permet de localiser la faille STEP le long de l’AFS sur les deux profils.

The Raspas Metamorphic Complex of southwestern Ecuador is regarded as the southernmost remnant of oceanic and continental terranes accreted in the latest Jurassic–Early Cretaceous. It consists of variably metamorphosed rock types. (1) Mafic and ultramafic rocks metamorphosed under high-pressure (HP) conditions (eclogite facies) show oceanic plateau affinities with flat REE chondrite-normalized patterns, eNd150 Ma ranging from +4.6 to 9.8 and initial Pb isotopic ratios intermediate between MORB and OIB. (2) Sedimentary rocks metamorphosed under eclogitic conditions exhibit LREE enriched patterns, strong negative Eu anomalies, Rb, Nb, U, Th, Pb enrichments, low eNd150 Ma values (from � 6.4 to � 9.5), and high initial 87 Sr/ 86 Sr and 206,207,208 Pb/ 204 Pb isotopic ratios suggesting they were originally sediments derived from the erosion of an old continental crust. (3) Epidote-bearing amphibolites show N-MORB affinities with LREE depleted patterns, LILE, Zr, Hf and Th depletion, high eNd150 Ma (>+10) and low initial Pb isotopic ratios. Since flat subduction of the Nazca Plate beneath Peru was first recognized in the 1970s and 1980s a satisfactory explanation has eluded researchers. We present evidence that a lost oceanic plateau (Inca Plateau) has subducted beneath northern Peru and propose that the combined buoyancy of Inca Plateau and Nazca Ridge in southern Peru supports a 1500 km long segment of the downgoing slab and shuts off arc volcanism. This conclusion is based on an analysis of the seismicity of the subducting Nazca Plate, the structure and geochemistry of the Marquesas Plateau as well as tectonic reconstructions of the Pacific¿Farallon spreading center 34 to 43 Ma. These restore three sub¿parallel Pacific oceanic plateaus; the Austral, Tuamotu and Marquesas, to two Farallon Plate counterparts; the Iquique and Nazca Ridges. Inca Plateau is apparently the sixth and missing piece in an ensemble of 'V-shaped' hotspot tracks formed at on-axis positions. International audience; We analyze in this study a new set of marine data including 3D local tomography, 1992-2008 relocated earthquakes and two recent multichannel seismic lines to characterize the deformation style in the collision area offshore east Taiwan. We have mapped in detail the Mohos of the converging plates as well as the subduction interface with a resolution never reached before. We show that the sharp continental subduction of the Eurasia plate, beneath the middle part of the Central Range, indents the Philippine Sea plate (PSP) as attested by intra-oceanic slicing and incipient subduction of the PSP beneath the east coast of Taiwan. The westernmost part of the PSP slab is probably experiencing a beginning of break-off as attested by NW-trending en-échelon shear zones beneath the southern slope of the southern Ryukyu arc (SRA). These en-échelon shear zones have a sinistral component favored by the "collision-free" subduction of the PSP north of 24°30′N. The down-faulting of the subduction interface forms ramps along which earthquakes clusterize. Three M7 subduction earthquakes occurred offshore Suao city along these ramps with a recurrence interval of about 40 years: 1920 Mw7.7, 1963 Mw7.2 and 2002 Mw7.1 events. The 1966 Mw6.0-7.5 earthquakes sequence likely outlines a WNW-ESE left-lateral intra-slab shear zone. The SRA upper plate accommodates the complex geometry and deformation of the subducting PSP through seismic deformation. Shallow high velocities fringing the Luzon volcanic arc (LVA) beneath the Longitudinal Valley and north of the southernmost Ryukyu forearc basins are interpreted as relics of the LVA forearc basement squeezed in the collision zone. Based on the accommodation of a large part of the convergence through shortening within the PSP and the subsequent segmentation of the shallow subduction interface, we consider that the nucleation of a Mw ≥ 8 earthquake along the southernmost Ryukyu megathrust is unlikely.

International audience; Gravimetric and geologic data show that the reactivation of the Neogene Interandean depression and/or the ~75 - 65 Ma ophiolite suture into the modern dynamic of the Andes controlled the Gulf of Guayaquil Tumbes basin (GGTB) location and evolution during the past 1.8 - 1.6 Myr at least. Depending on whether the remobilization occurred along the in- terandean depression or the ophiolite suture, the GGTB evolved trough pure or simple shear mechanisms, respectively. Because the GGTB exhibits an along strike tectonic asymmetry associated with a pervasive seismic gap, the simple shear solution is more likely. Tectonic inversion occurred along a mid-crust detachment (the Mid-Crust detachment hereafter) matching the ophiolite suture that accommodates the North Andean Block (NAB) northward drift. The so-called Decoupling Strip located at the shelf slope break accommodated the tensional stress rotation from N-S along the shelf area i.e. NAB-drift induced to E-W along the continental margin i.e. subduction-erosion-induced. The land- ward dipping Woollard detachment system located at the Upper-Lower slope boundary connects the subduction channel at depth, allowing the Upper slope to evolve independently from the Lower slope wedge. The long-term recurrence in- terval between earthquakes, the strong interplate coupling, and the aseismic creeping deformation acting along the main low-angle detachments i.e. the Woollard and the Mid-Crust detachments may account for the pervasive seismic gap at the GGTB area. Because the subduction channel exhibits no record of significant seismic activity, no evidence exists to establish a link between the GGTB sustained subsidence and a basin-centered asperity. Because the GGTB is a promis- ing site of hydrocarbon resources, to understand processes at the origin of this escape-induced forearc basin has a major economic interest.

The tectonic phases, subsidence patterns and location of the magmatic arc along the Peruvian margin during Late Cretaceous and Paleogene times are compared with the main geodynamic parameters: absolute plate motion; convergence velocity and direction; age of the subducted slab; and accretional events for the same periods. During the Late Cretaceous, long-termed compression seems to be controlled by the absolute trenchward motion of the overriding plate, and, to a minor extent, by the young age of the subducted lithosphere. Short-lived contractional or extensional phases are mainly linked to the acceleration or deceleration of the convergence between the oceanic and continental plates, and probably to changes in the convergence direction. Periods of high and low convergence rates coincide with increased and decreased subsidence rates along the margin, respectively, and seem to be independent of compressional-tensional regimes. During the Paleogene, in addition to the mentioned processes, the eastward shift of the magmatic belt and subsidence in the forearc zone are interpreted as the result of the subduction erosion of the margin. This process seems to be related to the decrease of the dip of the Benioff zone, expressed by the drastic widening of the magmatic arc.

Laurent Jolivet est Professeur à l'Université d'Orléans au 1er Septembre 2009; International audience; We describe structural data from a 2000 km N-S dextral strike-slip zone extending from northern Sakhalin to the southeast corner of the Japan Sea. Satellite images, field data, and focal mechanisms of earthquakes in Sakhalin are included in the interpretation. Since Miocene time the deformation in Sakhalin has been taken up by N-S dextral strike-slip faults with a reverse component and associated en e'chelon folds. Narrow en échelon Neogene basins were formed along strike-sup faults and were later folded in a second stage of deformation. We propose a model of basin formation along extension al faults delimitating dominos between two major strike-slip faults, and subsequent counterclockwise rotation of the dominos in a dextral transpressional regime, basins becoming progressively oblique to the direction of maximum horizontal compression and undergoing shortening. The association of both dextral and compressional focal mechanisms of earthquakes indicates that the same transpressional regime still prevails today in Sakhalin. We present fault set measurements undertaken in Noto Peninsula and Yatsuo Basin at the southern end of the Sakhalin-East Japan Sea strike-slip zone. Early and middle Miocene formations recorded the same transtensional regime as observed along the west coast of NE Honshu. During the early and middle Miocene the strike-slip regime was transpressional to the north in Sakhalin and Hokkaido, and transtensional to the south along the west coast of NE Honshu as far as Noto Peninsula and Yatsuo basin. Dextral motion accommodated the opening of the Japan Sea as a pull-apart basin, with the Tsushima fault to the west. The opening of the Japan Sea ceased at the end of the middle Miocene when transtension started to change to E-W compression in the Japan arc. Subduction of the Japan Sea lithosphere under the Japan arc started 1.8 Ma ago. The evolution of the stress regime from transtensional to compressional in the southern part of the strike-slip zone is related to the inception of the subduction of the young Philippine Sea Plate lithosphere under the Japan arc during the late Miocene. Subduction related extension is a necessary condition for the opening of the Japan Sea. Two possible mechanisms can account for dextral shear in this area: (1) counterclockwise rotation of crustal blocks due to the collision of India with Asia, (2) extrusion of the Okhotsk Sea block squeezed between the North America and Eurasia plates.

The present geometry of the Eastern Tibetan plateau, made of the Songpan Ganze terrane and the Longmen Shan range, is probably due to a rheological contrast between the Yangtze craton to the East, and the Songpan Ganze, which bump into the craton margin in response to the India-Asia collision. We reconstituted the geodynamic evolution of the area from Neoproterozoic times to present to evaluate how the different orogenic cycles influence the thermal, mineralogical and chemical structures observed today. Studies of the crystalline massifs of the western margin of the Yangtze craton and of the San Dao Qiao ophiolite show that during the Neoproterozoïc times, the craton margin was a subduction zone with opening of marginal basin due to mantle plumes. Petrologic and structural studies of the Danba metamorphic complex allow determining that during the Indosinian orogeny (200-180 Ma), exhumation mechanism of the deep structural level of the complex is an extrusion along a ductile thrust. Plutons position relative to sutures zones in the Tibetan plateau lead to a model of double slab roll-back under the Songpan Ganze at the end of the Indosinian orogeny which explain the diversity of the granites. The double slab roll-back and the difference in deformation between the Songpan Ganze and the Yangtze craton lead to a slab tear along the craton margin. The complete delamination of the lithospheric mantle under the Songpan Ganze terrane can explain the present juxtaposition of a thick crust and thin mantle lithosphere against a cratonized one., La géométrie actuelle de l'est du plateau Tibétain, constitué par le Songpan Ganze et les Longmen Shan, est probablement dictée par une différence de rhéologie entre le craton du Yangtze à l'est, et le Songpan Ganze à l'ouest, qui vient buter contre la marge du craton en réponse à la collision Inde-Asie. La position des granites du Songpan Ganze par rapport aux sutures au sein du plateau Tibétain permet de proposer un double retrait de slab sous le Songpan Ganze à la fin de l'orogénèse Indosinienne qui explique la diversité des granitoïdes. Ce double retrait de slab et la différence de réponse à la contrainte entre le Songpan Ganze et le craton du Yangtze a conduit à un déchirement de slab. La délamination complète de la partie mantellique de la lithosphère du Songpan Ganze à la fin de l'orogénèse Indosinienne peut expliquer l'accolement d'une lithosphère à croûte épaisse et manteau fin contre une lithosphère cratonisée à la bordure est du plateau Tibétain

In the central part of the New Hebrides island arc a sizable gap exists in the seismic activity. Seismic observations in the zone of the gap have been previously interpreted as either related to a detachment of part of the downgoing slab or associated with a continuous slab. We give a geometrical argument which, added the seismic observations from these previous studies, adds one step in favor of the detachment hypothesis. After unfolding the downgoing plate and restoring it to its initial state, using a 3D balance technique, we show that the gap can be filled with three pieces. Two of these pieces are seismic zones located beneath the seismic gap and the third one is a deep (550 – 650 km) seismic zone located about 200 km north-east of the arc. These three pieces could be detached parts of the subducting plate.

in press; The western part of Ecuador is made of several oceanic terranes, which comprise two oceanic plateaus, of Early (≈ 120 Ma), and Late Cretaceous age (≈ 90 Ma), respectively. The older oceanic plateau was accreted to the andean margin in the Late Campanian (≈ 75 Ma). Fragments of the Turonian-Coniacian plateau were accreted to the ecuadorian margin in the Late Maastrichtian (≈ 68 Ma, Guaranda terrane) and Late Paleocene (≈ 58 Ma, Piñón-Naranjal terrane). The Guaranda terrane received either fine-grained oceanic sediments of Coniacian-Maastrichtian age, or island arc / back-arc volcanic suites of Middle Campanian-Middle Maastrichtian age. The Piñón-Naranjal terrane recorded a comparable history, completed in the Maastrichtian-Paleocene, either by pelagic cherts, or by island arc products (Macuchi arc). The Late Cretaceous plateau of Ecuador is interpreted as part of the Caribbean oceanic plateau (COP), because their evolutions are comparable. If so, the COP was not formed by the Galápagos hotspot, but on the Farallón oceanic plate, south of Ecuador and close to the South American margin. The COP belonged to the Farallón plate, until a subduction zone separated both plates in the Middle Campanian, giving way to a well developed Mid Campanian-Mid Maastrichtian island arc. Accretion in the Late Maastrichtian triggered a change in the subduction system, and the development of a new arc system of Late Maastrichtian-Late Paleocene age, which crosscut the South America-COP plate boundary. The last accretion occurred in the Late Paleocene.

The stratigraphic revision of the southern coastal ecuadorian series makes possible the reconstruction of the pre-collision history of the Caribbean Plateau accreted to the ecuadorian margin. The Coniacian age of the oceanic basement (Piñón Fm) indicates that the latter is part of the Caribbean oceanic plateau. It is overlain by the Calentura Fm, which comprises from base to top: (i) 20 to 200 m of lavas and volcanic breccias of arc affinity (Las Orquídeas Mb), (ii) siliceous, organic rich black limestones of (middle?) Coniacian age, (iii) red, radiolarian rich, calcareous cherts ascribed to the Santonian-early Campanian, and (iv) marls, greywackes and island arc tuffs of Mid Campanian age. The latter are overlain by volcaniclastic turbidites of Mid to Late Campanian age (Cayo Fm), coeval to the Campanian-Maastrichtian island arc series locate farther West (San Lorenzo Fm)., La révision stratigraphique des séries crétacées de la côte sud-équatorienne permet de préciser les principales étapes de l’histoire pré-accrétion du Plateau Caraïbe accrété à la marge équatorienne. L’âge Coniacien du substratum océanique (Fm Piñón) montre qu’il appartient au Plateau océanique Caraïbe. Il est surmonté par la Fm Calentura, constituée, de bas en haut, par (i) 20 à 200 m de laves et brèches volcaniques à signature d’arc (Mb Las Orquídeas), (ii) des calcaires siliceux riches en ma-tière organique datés du Coniacien (moyen ?), (iii) des cherts rouges calcaires à radiolaires attribués au Santonien-Campanien inférieur, et (iv) des marnes, grauwackes et tufs à géochimie d’arc, d’âge Campanien moyen. Ceux-ci sont surmontés par des turbidites volcano-clastiques datées du Campanien moyen et supérieur (Fm Cayo), équivalentes des laves de l’arc insulaire campano-maastrichtien situé plus à l’Ouest (Fm San Lorenzo). Le magmatisme du Mb Las Orquídeas est interprété comme issu, non d’une subduction éphémère, mais de la fusion du plateau caraïbe encore chaud. Le passage des calcaires coniaciens aux cherts santoniens serait lié à la subsidence thermique du Plateau Caraïbe. La surrection du Plateau Caraïbe et la naissance de l’arc insulaire San Lorenzo au Campanien moyen, pourraient être liées à la collision du plateau Caraïbe avec la marge du Mexique. La collision du Plateau Caraïbe avec la marge équato-rienne au début du Maastrichtien supérieur provoquerait la fin de l’activité de l’arc insulaire San Lo-renzo. Au Paléocène supérieur, le Plateau Caraïbe se scinde en deux, le terrain occidental (Piñón) se trouvant sous-charrié sous le terrain oriental (Guaranda).

This work's main aim is the estimation of the physical properties and the analysis of the geodynamic process of the Ecuador-Colombian subduction zone. I adapted and developped seismic imaging tools based on diffraction tomography. This tools are applied to multichannel seismic reflection (MCS) data and reflection/refraction wide-angle (WA) data acquired during SISTEUR and SALIERI cruises. Quantitative seismic imaging is presented for three zones : shallow zone (~ 0-3 km), intermediate zone (~ 3-10 km) and deep zone (~ 10-30 km). In the shallow zone the profile SIS-40 on the Colombian margin was processed and physical properties of the Bottom Simulating Reflector (BSR) were estimated. Along the BSR regions with relative increase of the velocity (1470-1650 m/s), were obtained and associated with the presence of hydrates above the BSR and regions with relative decrease of the velocity (~1200 m/s), associated with gaz below the BSR. In the intermediate zone, I analysed the subduction channel (profil SIS-72). This structure is between the decollement (top of the subduction channel) ant the top of the oceanic crust (bottom). In some area the decollement exhibits relative velocity decrease possibly due to the presence of fluids inside and below the decollement. I design an integrated approach to obtain the small scale velocities around the decollement area. The integrated approach is based on 2 steps: (1) asymptotic waveform inversion with iterative correction of the velocity macro-model and to obtain a 2-D quantitative depth model for velocity; (2) an automated post-processing procedure to eliminate the source signature from the tomographic images and to estimate the absolute values of the velocity along the decollement. The post-processing is formulated as an automatic non-linear inverse problem where the data space is composed of several one-dimensional logs extracted for different offset from the depth migrated image. The model space is composed of a family of realistic impulse layered models in depth, parameterized by a limited number of parameters (random velocity amplitude and a random thickness for each layer). These models mimick the logs of the physical model searched. To build the predicted dataset, the tested logs are converted from space to time using the velocity of the background medium and are convolved with the source wavelet. To estimate the source wavelet we use an average of the direct wave. The predicted dataset are computed by convolution of the depth-to-time converted impulse models with the source wavelet and compared with the tomographic models. The inverse problem is solved by a random exploration of the model space for each offset, using the very fast simulating anealing algorithm (VFSA). A small scale velocity model is obtained. Positve velocity perturbations appear at the top of the oceanic crust. The decollement is characterized by regions with positve velocity perturbations probably associated with fluids diffusion up to the decollement and regions with negative velocity perturbations probably related to the channeling of the fluids. Deep structures are imaged by a combined approach of MCS and WA data to improve the spatial resolution of the Moho and of interplate contact and to establish a possible relation with the seismogenic zone. A well constrained velocity model between 0 and 25 km is obtained and deep reflectors such as the Moho and the interplate contact are imaged as well the existence of the splay fault is validated (the splay fault was not clearly identified on the time stack section; Mon travail de thèse se propose d'étudier la structure, les propriétés physiques et les processus géodynamiques de la zone de subduction d'Equateur-Colombie grâce à l'adaptation et le développement d'outils d'imagerie sismique (inversion de formes d'ondes 'alias' tomographie en diffraction) et à leur application aux données de sismique marine multitrace (MCS) et grand-angle OBS (WA) acquises en Equateur-Colombie pendant les campagnes SISTEUR et SALIERI. Ces outils m'ont permis de réaliser une imagerie fine et quantitative à trois niveaux : l'imagerie superficielle (~ 0-3 km), l'imagerie à profondeur intermédiaire (~ 3-10 km) et l'imagerie profonde (~ 10-30 km). Dans le domaine superficiel, j'ai effectué une cartographie fine et quantitative des propriétés physiques des sédiments au voisinage du BSR (Bottom Simulating Reflector), interpreté comme la base de stabilité des hydrates de gaz. Sur le profil SIS-40 situé sur la marge sud de la Colombie, j'ai pu identifier la présence de failles qui perturbent localement le BSR. Les résultats présentés sous la forme d' une série de logs adjacents de l'image migrée en profondeur, montrent que certaines régions du BSR sont caractérisées par une augmentation de la vitesse (1470-1650 m/s), indiquant la présence d'une faible quantité d'hydrates de gaz au dessus du BSR; d'autres zones situées immédiatement sous le BSR sont caractérisées par une diminution de la vitesse (~1200 m/s), liée à la présence de gaz libres piégés sous la couche d'hydrate de gaz. A des profondeurs moyennes j'ai étudié la structure du chenal de subduction (profil SIS-72). Le chenal constitue la limite mécanique entre la plaque chevauchante et la plaque plongeante. Il est délimité à son toit par un fort réflecteur interprété comme le décollement interplaque et à sa base par le toit très réflectif de la croûte océanique en subduction. L'imagerie fine et quantitative des propriétés physiques du décollement interplaque permet de mieux comprendre le rôle de la circulation des fluides et des variations lithologiques et physiques, sur le couplage mécanique inter-plaque. En raison de la sensibilité de la méthode de tomographie en diffraction au macro-modèle de vitesse, un code de correction de ce modèle a été implémenté, afin d'obtenir des images tomographiques fiables (i.e. géométrie et amplitudes correctes). Du fait de la bande passante limitée de la source et de la longueur du dispositif d'acquisition limitée à 4.5 km, les images tomographiques ont une résolution spatiale limitée : l'image tomographique présente un déficit des petits et grands nombre d'onde (fréquences spatiales) limitant ainsi l' interprétation géologique des paramètres physiques cartographiés. Un traitement spécifique basé sur la modélisation des traces sismiques a été implémenté. L'image tomographique, traitée comme une série de traces verticales, constitue la donnée observée. L'espace des modèles est constitué par un ensemble de modèles impulsionnels et unidimensionnels de Terre construits aléatoirement. Ces modèles sont dégradés par convolution avec une estimation de l'ondelette source afin de fournir une représentation synthétique de l'image tomographique « observée ». La minimisation de la fonction coût entre les traces migrées et les traces synthétiques est effectuée dans le cadre d'une inversion globale par recuit simulé (VFSA= « Very Fast Simulated Annealing »). Le modèle moyen issu de cette procédure fournit un modèle 2D fin de vitesse, fonction de la profondeur et comparable à la limite de la résolution théorique de la source. A l'issue de ce traitement, des perturbations de vitesse positives sont mises en évidence au toit de la croûte, et d'autres négatives accompagnent certains segments du niveau du décollement. Ces dernières sont probablement associées à la présence de fluides. Le domaine plus profond a été étudié à partir des données MCS et WA dans le double but (1) d'améliorer la résolution spatiale des images sismiques du Moho et du contact interplaque en relation avec la zone sismogène, et (2) de détecter la présence d'anomalies crustales de vitesse et d'analyser leur relation avec les zones d'aspérité sismologiques. L'utilisation conjointe des données de sismique MCS et WA a été mise en oeuvre pour prolonger vers le bas les images de sismique verticale et tenter ainsi d'établir une relation entre les processus profonds et les manifestations en surface. L'application de la chaîne de traitement au profil SIS-44 a permis d'obtenir un modèle de vitesse bien contraint jusqu'à 25 km de profondeur. Ce modèle met en évidence des réflecteurs profonds (Moho et contact interplaque ) et des réflecteurs plus superficiels (splay fault), dont l'interprétation était initialement incertaine sur les images migrées en temps.

Dans le Sud-Ouest Pacifique, la configuration de la frontière convergente entre les plaques Australie et Pacifique est le résultat d’interactions complexes s’exerçant sur un vaste domaine de déformation active entre deux subductions à vergences opposées et les ouvertures d’arrière-arc qui leur sont associées. À l’est, la plaque Pacifique subducte vers l’ouest dans la fosse de Tonga-Kermadec, et à l’ouest, la plaque Australie plonge vers le nord-est dans la fosse du Vanuatu-Salomon. Y sont associées respectivement les ouvertures des bassins de Lau-Havre et Nord-Fidjien. La liaison entre les deux subductions est un domaine à déformation diffuse, composé de multiples centres d’accrétion actifs relayés par des failles transformantes. La bordure nord est matérialisée par la subduction de Vitiaz, inactive depuis le Miocène supérieur, le long de laquelle la lithosphère Pacifique crétacée passait sous la plaque Australie. L’ouverture océanique consécutive du bassin Nord Fidjien débute, il y a environ 12 Ma, et se développe le long de plusieurs axes d’accrétion contrastés. L’accrétion dans le bassin de Lau est plus récente et plus localisée. Les liens entre subduction et accrétion océanique d’arrière-arc sont partout évidents dans la région, et tout particulièrement dans le bassin de Lau. Cependant, on relève une multiplication anormale des axes d’accrétion actifs à la jonction entre les deux bassins. Cette situation géodynamique, tectonique, magmatique et géochimique complexe, voire anormale, de même que l’anomalie positive de la topographie et du géoïde, la présence d’un fort flux de chaleur, d’une lithosphère océanique mince et de faibles vitesses mantelliques témoignent tous d’une convection intense dans le manteau supérieur sous l’ensemble de la frontière, et d’une influence de type point chaud étendu dans la partie septentrionale. In the SW Pacific the configuration of the Pacific-Australia convergent plate boundary is the result of complex and multiple interactions between subduction and spreading, within a wide region of active deformation between two opposite subduction zones and the associated back-arc opening. To the east, the Pacific plate subducts westward into the Tonga-Kermadec trench, while to the west, the Australia plate plunges eastward and northeastward into the Vanuatu and Solomon trenches. These subductions are associated respectively with the Lau-Havre and North Fiji basin opening, while their junction is underlined by a high number of active spreading centres relayed by transform faults. The northern border is highlighted by the inactive (since the late Miocene) Vitiaz subduction of the Cretaceous Pacific crust beneath the Australia plate. The North Fiji basin opening started ~12 Ma ago and has developed on several highly variable spreading axes. The oceanic spreading is more recent and concentrated in the Lau Basin. The links between subduction and back-arc oceanic spreading are obvious everywhere in the SW Pacific, especially in the Lau Basin. However an abnormal number of active spreading axes occurs within the junction of the two basins. This complex, and abnormal, geodynamic, tectonic, magmatic and geochemical situation, as well as a positive anomaly of the topography and geoid, the occurrence of a high heat flow, the presence of a thin oceanic lithosphere and low mantle seismic velocities collectively demonstrate intense convection in the upper mantle of the whole area, and the possible influence of a wide hot spot-type mantle.

The Italian Neogene magmatism is characterized by a large petrological andgeochemical variety, covering almost all the magmatic rocks pattern known worldwide. Mostof the geodynamic models are based upon the recent widespread Quaternary volcanism,comprising mafic to intermediate lavas. In contrast, the felsic magmatism which correspondsto the first manifestations of the Tyrrhenian margin is much less voluminous, outcropswithout or with few associated mafic-intermediate rocks, and is less known.The goals of this thesis are: (1) to precise the age of these manifestations, (2) to betterunderstand the origin of this magmatism (determinating the sources) and, (3) to insert theseconstraints in the general framework of the Italian magmatism and the opening of theTyrrhenian Sea. A combined geochronological and petro-geochemical study has thus beencarried out on felsic Tuscan edifices (San Vincenzo, Roccastrada and Amiata) and the Ponzaand Palmarola islands (Pontine Archipelago, Campanian area, Gaeta gulf).Twenty-five K-Ar datings (Cassignol-Gillot technique) have been performed on thePonza and Palmarola islands rocks. The beginning of the volcanic activity of Palmarola hasbeen dated for the first time at 1.64 ± 0.02 Ma; the obtained Quaternary (Pleistocene) age is incontradiction with the Pliocene age which was proposed on stratigraphical criteria.Concerning Ponza, a new rhyolites episode had been recovered at 3.1-2.9 Ma. BetweenPliocene and Pleistocene, the volcanism changed from orogenic calc-alkaline in Ponza to atransitional magmatism in Palmarola whose chemical signature approaches those of intraplatealkaline magmatism. This occurred in only 1.3 Ma. A petrogenetic model is proposed for themagma of Ponza and Palmarola from new mineralogical and isotopic data. It impliesfractional crystallization coupled with more or less strong crustal contamination, fromdifferent mantle liquids.Accurate and reproducible ages have been obtained for the Tuscan Province edifices(San Vincenzo, Roccastrada and Amiata). New Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic data confirmed thehybrid character of Monte Amiata volcano in terms of sources, between the Tuscan and theRoman provinces. Based on our new ages, we propose a new possible scenario for itsvolcanological evolution.The principal component analysis of the lead isotopic data set of all the studied felsicmanifestations has permitted to identify the two main source components at the origin of theserocks. The dominant component is mantellic and corresponds to a mixing between DM andHIMU end-members, while the second is an enriched crustal-derived end-member. Thesouthernmost felsic rocks (Pontine) show the strongest influence of the DM+HIMUcomponent. Thus, even with so differentiated rocks and at so small scale (central Italy), wefind the general trend of the whole Italian peninsula and Sicily derived from the isotopic studyof mafic rocks, which shows a general DM+HIMU mixing plus a crustal-derived endmember.The influence of the DM+HIMU end-member increases from North to South ofItaly.When extended at the scale of the whole Tyrrhenian margin, the PCA allows identifying twosource domains delimitated by a major lithospheric discontinuity, the 41 Parallel Line, and inwhich the evolution of the components is different. The northern domain characteristics couldbe controlled by a lower lithosphere delamination, whereas in the southern domain they mightbe due to the fast slab roll-back. In both domains, the invoked processes would trigger theupwelling of asthenospheric material., Le magmatisme Néogène italien est caractérisé par une grande variété pétrologique et géochimique, couvrant presque entièrement le spectre des roches magmatiques connues dans le monde entier. Le volcanisme récent, Quaternaire, comprenant des laves de compositionbasiques et intermédiaires, est à la base de la majorité des modèles géodynamiques. Comparativement, le magmatisme acide, correspondant aux premières manifestations sur la marge Tyrrhénienne est beaucoup pour les édifices de la Province Toscane (San Vincenzo, Roccastrada et Amiata). Pour le volcan de Monte Amiata, de nouvelles données isotopiques Sr-Nd et Pb confirment qu'il est en terme de sources un hybride entre les Province Toscane et Romaine. Nous proposons grâce aux âges obtenus un nouveau scénario pour sa mise en place. L'analyse en composantes principales (ACP) des données isotopiques du Pb de toutes les manifestations acides étudiées dans cette thèse a permis d'identifier les deux composants source à l'origine de ces roches. Le composant le plus important est un pôle mantelliquecorrespondant à un mélange entre DM et HIMU, tandis que le second, dont le rôle est mineur comparé au premier, est un pôle enrichi de type crustal. Les roches acides les plus au Sud (Pontines) montrent une influence plus forte du composant DM+HIMU. Ainsi, même sur desroches aussi différenciées et à plus petite échelle (l'Italie centrale), on retrouve la tendance générale propre à l'ensemble de la péninsule Italienne et de la Sicile, dérivée de l'étude isotopique des roches basiques, qui montre un mélange général entre DM et HIMU auquel s'ajoute un composant dérivé de la croûte. L'influence du pôle DM-HIMU est croissante duNord au Sud de l'Italie. Etendue à l'échelle de la marge Tyrrhénienne italienne, l'ACP permet d'identifier deuxdomaines sources, délimités par une discontinuité lithosphérique majeure de l'Italie centrale, le 41ème Parallèle, dans lesquels les composants évoluent différemment. Les caractéristiques du domaine Nord pourraient être contrôlées par un processus de délamination de la lithosphère inférieure, celles du domaine Sud par un retrait rapide du slab, les deuxphénomènes provoquant une remontée asthénosphérique.

Los volcanes El Reventador y Sumaco, localizados a lo largo de la zona subandina norte de Ecuador (levantamiento Napo), muestran una marcada variación petrográfica y geoquímica, a pesar de estar desarrollados sobre un mismo basamento correspondiente a la sección fanerozoica de la cuenca Amazónica Oriente, y estar separados solamente por 50 km de distancia el uno del otro a lo largo de un eje principal NNE-SSO.El volcán Sumaco, localizado al sur del levantamiento Napo, es caracterizado por un volcanismo alcalino shoshonítico fuertemente subsaturado en sílice y enriquecido en elementos incompatibles en una relación de al menos 5 a 1 con respecto a los contenidos observados en el resto de volcanes andinos ecuatorianos.Elvolcán El Reventador, localizado en lapartenorte dela zonasubandina, es caracterizado por un volcanismo calco-alcalino con una cierta signatura adakítica similar a la que presentan los volcanes holocénicos Cayambe y Antisana de la Cordillera Real.Radios isotópicos de 87Sr/86Sr y 143Nd/144Nd, obtenidos en ambos volcanes, excluyen los procesos de asimilación de corteza como el principal mecanismo para explicar su variación composicional. En su lugar son los procesos de subducción y la interacción con la cuña mantélica los que imparten el control principal para la generación de estos magmas y sus diferencias.Proponemos preliminarmente la existencia de un límite volcanogénico, el mismo que separa dos tipos diferentes de zonas de Benioff desplazadas por efecto de la subducción subhorizontal de la Cordillera de Carnegie. Al norte, el volcán El Reventador estaría asociado con procesos normales de subducción, y su signatura geoquímica reflejaría aun los efectos metasomáticos adakíticos generados al oeste bajo el frente volcánico andino, y arrastrados al este hacia zonas más profundas por corrientes convectivas en la cuña mantélica. Al sur, el volcán alcalino Sumaco reflejaría posiblemente el inicio de un proceso de “slab roll back” como consecuencia directa de la subducción de la Cordillera de Carnegie, la misma que bloquea y disminuye el proceso normal de subducción. Su signatura geoquímica sugiere un menor aporte de la placa subductada y/o bajos grados de fusión parcial, como es sugerido por sus bajos radios LIL/HFS y altos contenidos en elementos incompatibles. Su signatura alcalina también podría reflejar la contribución de una fuente mantélica previo tipo isla oceánica (OIB), modificada por componentes de subducción.

A crustal model obtained by 2-D inversion of traveltimes reveals the overthickened (14 km) oceanic crust of the CR that underthrusts the high velocity (>6 km/s) basement of the upper plate margin wedge, interpreted as part of the accreted oceanic terranes described onshore. The plate interface dips 4°to 10°east from the trench to a depth of 15 km. Shadow zones observed on the margin OBS records are interpreted as a low velocity zone consisting of a thin layer of underthrust sediments, and the 3-km-thick CR layer 2, whose average seismic velocity of 5.1 km/s is slower than that of the margin wedge. Increased interplate coupling related to the subduction of the thick, buoyant CR may account for an apparent local increased recurrence interval between great interplate earthquakes.

aa, L’ensemble des forces impliquées dans la subduction contrôle le transfert de mouvement du panneau plongeant vers la plaque chevauchante et par voie de conséquence le régime tectonique de la marge convergente. Ce régime peut être caractérisé& par une accrétion frontale ou du sous-placage d’une part et une érosion frontale ou basale, d’autre part. Les processus de l’érosion de la base de la plaque chevauchante sont encore mal connus, et pourraient résulter soit d’une abrasion mécanique par les rugosités kilométriques à centimétriques de la plaque plongeante en régime de fort couplage mécanique soit d’une hydrofracturation basale résultant des surpressions de fluides expulsés des sédiments et de la croûte subduits [von Huene and Culotta, 1989]. Cette dernière hypothèse est envisageable en régime de faible couplage mécanique.Á l’échelle de la lithosphère, la nucléation des grands séismes de subduction semble également dépendre des forces impliquées dans les zones de subduction, puisque près de 90% de l’énergie sismique accumulée sur le globe est libérée dans ces zones de subduction. Ces grands séismes se produisent par rupture d’une portion, au comportement fragile, du contact interplaque, appelée zone sismogène, dont les limites semblent être principalement contrôlées thermiquement. Ils peuvent se produire par rupture d’une zone fortement couplée et propagation de la rupture dans une zone de couplage moindre (modèle des aspérités) [Kanamori, 1986; Lay and Kanamori, 1981; Lay et al., 1982] ou par la rupture d’une zone faiblement couplée et la propagation jusqu’à une zone de fort couplage (modèle des barrières) [Aki, 1979; Das and Aki, 1977].L’étude de la marge Nord Équateur – Sud Colombie (0° - 3,5°N) a été abordée selon trois axes. (1) Les caractéristiques morpho-structurales du front de déformation, du bassin avant-arc et de son substratum nous renseignent sur le régime tectonique dominant de la marge et ses variations spatio-temporelles. (2) Les caractéristiques des Bottom Simulating Reflectors permettent de calculer des valeurs du flux de chaleur, points de départ d’une modélisation thermique de la marge qui fournit une estimation des dimensions et de la localisation de la zone sismogène et permet de discuter des variations longitudinales du régime thermique de la marge. (3) Enfin, nous avons abordé le rôle des failles crustales héritées de la marge, sur le contrôle de la propagation de la rupture des grands séismes de subduction du XX° siècle.Cette marge apparaît segmentée par des failles crustales transverses : les failles d’Esmeraldas et de Manglares, ainsi que par le promontoire d’Esmeraldas au Sud et le promontoire de Patia au Nord. Elle a globalement subi une déformation compressive, depuis le saut de subduction, à l’Éocène moyen – supérieur, notamment lors de l’entrée en subduction de la jeune plaque Nazca, ce qui se traduit par une augmentation de la déformation. Cette déformation reste active au nord de la faille de Manglares alors qu’elle est scellée au sud. Le substratum et le front de la marge, d’Esmeraldas à Buenaventura, semblent avoir subit une érosion tectonique apparemment initiée au Miocène moyen – supérieur. Depuis environ 1 Ma, l’accrétion semble se propager du nord vers le sud.La zone sismogène mesurerait 110 à 160 km de large et sa limite supérieure, serait située à ~11 km de profondeur et ~42 km de distance du front de déformation dans le nord de la zone d’étude. Le flux de chaleur, au front de la marge, varie du simple au double mettant en évidence une segmentation thermique de la marge.Enfin la localisation et l’extension des zones de rupture des séismes montrent que les failles transverses héritées d’Esmeraldas et de Manglares limitent la propagation de la rupture sismique et segmentent sismologiquement la marge.

International audience; The North Andean convergent margin is a region of intense crustal deformation, with six great subduction earthquakesMw ½ 7:8 this century. The regional pattern of seismicity and volcanism shows a high degree of segmentation along strikeof the Andes. Segments of steep slab subduction alternate with aseismic regions and segments of flat slab subduction. Thissegmentation is related to heterogeneity on the subducting Nazca Plate. In particular, the influence of the Carnegie Ridgecollision is investigated. Four distinct seismotectonic regions can be distinguished: Region 1 – from 6ºN to 2.5ºN withsteep ESE-dipping subduction and a narrow volcanic arc; Region 2 – from 2.5ºN to 1ºS showing an intermediate-depthseismic gap and a broad volcanic arc; Region 3 – from 1ºS to 2ºS with steep NE-dipping subduction, and a narrowvolcanic arc; Region 4 – south of 2ºS with flat subduction and no modern volcanic arc. The Carnegie Ridge has beencolliding with the margin since at least 2 Ma based on examination of the basement uplift signal along trench-paralleltransects. The subducted prolongation of Carnegie Ridge may extend up to 500 km from the trench as suggested bythe seismic gap and the perturbed, broad volcanic arc. These findings conflict with previous tectonic models suggestingthat the Carnegie Ridge entered the trench at 1 Ma. Furthermore, the anomalous geochemical (adakitic) signature of thevolcanoes in the broad Ecuador volcanic arc and the seismicity pattern are proposed to be caused by lithospheric tearsseparating the buoyant, shallowly subducting Carnegie Ridge from segments of steep subduction in Regions 1 and 3. Itis further suggested that Carnegie Ridge supports a local ‘flat slab’ segment similar to that observed in Peru. The impactof the Carnegie Ridge collision on the upper plate causes transpressional deformation, extending inboard to beyond thevolcanic arc with a modern level of seismicity comparable to the San Andreas fault system. The pattern of instrumentaland historical seismicity indicates (1) great earthquakes on the northern and southern flanks of the colliding ridge, (2) aslight reduction in observed seismicity at the trench–ridge intersection, (3) increased stress far into the continent, and (4) aNNE displacement of the N. A two-dimensional kinematic model for lithospheric thrusting that considers the flexural interction between the underriding and overriding plates was used to assess the mechanical implications of subducting trench-parallel fracture zones on the topography and free-air gravity anomalies of the Puysegur ridge/trench system. Fracture zones in the underriding plate are simulated by vertical discontinuities across which bending and shearing stresses cannot be supported. The implication of reactivating fracture zones on the outer trench slope is to suppresss the flexural bulge, creating topographic relief between the fracture zone and the trench, and reducing the trench gravity anomaly. In the studied region the trench subparallel l'Atalante fracture zone accounts for the lack of a flexural bulge, strong outer trench slope, and gravity gradients. The southward decrease of the trench fracture zone distance results in a decrease of the trench gravity anomaly. The effect of subducting and vertically reactivating fracture zones within the underriding plate is to segment the load of the overriding plate, creating a trough located above the underthrust fracture zone. The vertical offset and gravity modifications are functions of the fracture zone position relative to the trench. This model explains the 3500-m-deep troughs and the 1700-m subsidence observed at the Puysegure ridge. We speculate that reactiviating underthrust fracture zones can facilitate strike slip faults development withn the upper plate in case of oblique subduction and are conducive to the formation and dispersion of terranes at convergent margins. La côte équatorienne est constituée d'un terrain d'origine océanique accrété à la marge continentale et supportant trois arcs insulaires successifs. Sa collision avec la marge andine a lieu au Paléocène supérieur-Eocène inférieur selon un contact à pendage est. Elle est suivie par la création en extension de bassins d'avant-arc (environ Eocène moyen). Ces derniers sont déformés et émergent à l'Eocène supérieur lors d'une deuxième phase compressive qui fait rejouer au moins localement le contact antérieur en chevauchement vers l'est. Ces deux événements tectoniques coïncident avec des changements importants dans la vitesse ou la direction de la convergence, qui se traduisent par des sauts d'arcs magmatiques. La création des bassins d'avant-arc, considérée comme une conséquence de l'érosion tectonique de la marge continentale, semble être consécutive aux phases compressives. On propose donc que l'érosion tectonique soit favorisée par les crises compressives, mais que la subsidence consécutive de l'avant-arc n'intervienne qu'après la relaxe de la contrainte compressive. La formation Santiago, d'âge Norien à Sinémurien moyen, affleure en zone subandine équatorienne. Son sommet renferme les seuls témoins d'un volcanisme du Jurassique inférieur actuellement connus en Equateur. Les niveaux volcaniques observés sont constitués de basaltes et de roches pyroclastiques acides. Cette étude met en évidence la coexistence de laves appartenant à deux lignées magmatiques au sommet de la formation Santiago ; les premières sont des tholéties continentales, mises en place en régime tectonique extensif, alors que les secondes sont des laves calco-alcalines et sont liées à l'existence d'une zone de subduction et à l'établissement d'un arc magmatique qui perdurera au Jurassique moyen. Cet article est un rapport sur deux réseaux sismologiques qui ont été opérationnels au Chili du nord pendant les années 1994 et 1995 (PISCO 1994 et CINCA 1995). Les études faisaient partie d'un projet du Centre Coopératif de Recherche SFB 267, ayant pour but d'expliquer le processus de déformation dans les Andes à l'aide des méthodes géophysiques et géologiques. The Geodynz-sud cruise on board the R/V l'Atalante collected bathymetric, side-scan sonar and seismic reflection data along the obliquely convergent boundary between the Australian and Pacific plates southwest of the South Island, New Zealand. The survey area extended from 44°05'S to 49°40'S, covering the transition zone between the offshore extension of the Alpine Fault and the Puysegur Trench and Puysegur Ridge. Based on variations in the nature and structure of the crust on either side of the margin, the plate boundary zone can be divided into three domains with distinctive structural and sedimentary characteristics. The northern domain involves subduction of probably thinned continental crust of the southern Challenger Plateau beneath the continental crust of Fiordland. It is characterized by thick sediments on the downgoing slab and a steep continental slope disrupted by fault scarps and canyons. The middle domain marks the transition between subduction of likely continental and oceanic crust defined by a series of en echelon ridges on the downgoing slab. This domain is characterized by a large collapse terrace on the continental slope which appears to be due to the collision of the en echelon ridges with the plate margin. The southern domain involves subduction of oceanic crust beneath continental and oceanic crust. This domain is characterized by exposed fabric of seafloor spreading on the downgoing slab, a steep inner trench wall and linear ridges and valleys on the Puysegur ridge crest. The data collected on this cruise provide insights into the nature and history of both plates, and factors influencing the distribution of strike-slip and compressive strain and the evolution of subduction processes along a highly oblique convergent margin. Le bloc côtier équatorien se trouve en position de ride et de bassin avant-arc entre la zone de subduction de la plaque Nazca à l'ouest et la Cordillère andine à l'est. Un mouvement latéral vers le nord conduisant à l'ouverture du Golfe de Guayaquil se superpose aux déformations verticales. Diverses méthodes de néotectonique seront mises en jeu (télédétection, terrasses marines (plio)-quaternaires, microtectonique, morphologie fluviale et MNT) afin d'obtenir une vue synthétique de la géodynamique récente de ce bloc. Swath bathymetric, sonar imagery and seismic reflection data dollected during thee SOPACMAPS cruise Leg 3 over segments of the Vitiaz Trench Lineament and adjacent areas provide new insights on the geometry and the structural evolution of this seismically inactive lineament. The Vitiaz Trench Lineament, although largely unknown, is one of the most important tectonic feature in the SW Pacific because it separates the Cretaceous crust of the Pacific Plate to the north from the Cenozoic lithosphere of the North Fiji and Lau Basins to the south. The lineament is considered to be the convergent plate boundary between the Pacific and Australian Plates during middle to late Tertiary time when the Vitiaz Arc was a continuous east-facing arc from the Tonga to the Solomon Islands before the development of the North Fiji and Lau Basins. Progresive reversal and cessation of subduction from west to east in the late Miocene-Lower Pliocene have been also proposed. However, precise structures and age of initiation and cessation of deformation along the Vitiaz Trench Lineament are unknown. The lineament consists of the Vitiaz Trench and three discontinuous and elongated troughs (Alexa, Rotuma and Horne Troughs) which connect the Vitiaz Trench to the northern end of the Tonga Trench. Our survey of the Alexa and Rotuma Troughs reveals that the lineament is composed of a series of WNW-ESE and ENE-WSW trending segments in front of large volcanic massifs belonging to the Melanesian Border Plateau, a WNW trending volcanic belt of seamounts and ridges on Pacific crust. The Plateau and Pacific plate lying immediately north of the lineament have been affected by intense normal faulting, collapse, and volcanism as evidenced by a series of tilted blocks, grabens, horsts and ridges trending N120° to N100° and N60°-70°. This tectonism includes several normal faulting episodes, the latest being very recent and possibly still active. (Résumé d'auteur)

Le 30 juillet 1995, un très fort séisme (MW = 8,1) se produisait dans la région d'Antofagasta, au sud de la lacune sismique du nord Chili. Ce séisme a rompu une zone de 60x180 km de l'interface de subduction entre la plaque Nazca et la plaque Amérique du Sud. Deux semaines après le séisme, nous avons remesuré avec GPS une partie du réseau géodésique mis en place antérieurement en 1992. Ici, nous présentons les déplacements géodésiques observés ainsi que les résultats de la modélisation du mécanisme focal obtenu à partir des données télésismiques, afin de préciser la position, la géométrie, et la dynamique de la rupture.
