Background: Ungrading is an alternative assessment approach that focuses on feedback provided to students in place of grades. Giving feedback as opposed to grades has been shown to increase intrinsic learner motivation, promote deeper learning, and decrease stress and anxiety., Educational Activity: Four pharmacy faculty implemented ungrading practices into required pharmacy courses, including two pharmacy practice lab courses and two didactic courses. Specific strategies such as formative feedback, peer assessment, self-reflection, and small and large group discussions were incorporated to achieve the learning objectives for each course. This work provides details about the assignments and assessments used in each course., Critical Analysis of Educational Activity: Anonymous surveys were administered to faculty members and students at a Midwest School of Pharmacy. Faculty members expressed varying levels of satisfaction and stress related to grading assessments. They also shared their opinions on teaching courses without traditional grades. The student survey examined factors such as grade point average (GPA), study time, and enjoyment of the pharmacy program. It also captured general opinions about grades. Based on survey results the implementation of ungrading practices helped students feel more prepared for advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs). The findings contribute to the understanding of alternative grading approaches and their potential impact on student learning, well-being, and motivation. Introduction: The increasing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) among college students, particularly in pharmacy education, raises ethical concerns and prompts debates on responsible usage. The promise of the potential to reduce workload is met with concerns of accuracy issues, algorithmic bias, and the lack of AI education and training. This study aims to understand pharmacy students' perspectives on the use of AI in pharmacy education., Methods: This study used an anonymous 14-question survey distributed among second, third, and fourth-year pharmacy students at four schools of pharmacy in the United States., Results: A total of 171 responses were analyzed. Demographic information included institution, class identification (P2, P3, P4), and age range. Regarding the use of AI, 43% of respondents were unaware of limitations of AI tools. Many respondents (45%) had used AI tools to complete assignments, while 42% considered it academic dishonesty. Fifty-six percent believed AI tools could be used ethically. Student perspectives on AI were varied but many expressed that it will be integral to pharmacy education and future practice., Conclusions: This study highlights the nuances of AI usage among pharmacy students. Despite limited education and training on AI, students utilized tools for various tasks. Objective: To provide schools and colleges of pharmacy a snapshot of Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) program characteristics to generate and share ideas for IPPE program modifications to improve student learning outcomes and comply with Standards 2025., Methods: A 41-item electronic survey was distributed to 140 Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education fully accredited schools and colleges of pharmacy in 2023. IPPE program characteristics such as structure, learning activities, assessments, and requirements were described., Results: Eighty-seven programs participated in the survey (62.1% response rate). Notable findings included 64.4% of programs starting IPPEs during the first professional year, 78.6% did not count simulation hours toward Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education hour requirements, 24.1% incorporated patient care electives, over 90% incorporated various patient care activities, 40.2% exceeded a 2:1 student-to-preceptor ratio, 15.7% incorporated layered learning, 50.0% incorporated interprofessional education, 57.5% used summative assessment rubrics based on Entrustable Professional Activities, and 77.0% used pass/fail grading., Conclusion: Owing to evolving accreditation standards, the study provided valuable information about the current state of IPPEs. Objectives: This integrative scoping review explores the applications of behavioral economics within higher education, particularly, through the lens of nudging (a concept that leverages insights from economics and psychology to guide individuals' decisions subtly). The primary objective is to provide a broad overview of interventions that use behavioral economics principles and, secondarily, discuss their potential to improve pharmacy education and create a foundation for future research in this area., Findings: The review analyzed 89 studies that applied behavioral economics principles in higher education settings. Reminders and prompts were the most frequently used principles, with generally positive outcomes, especially in enrollment management. Framing, incentives, and salience also demonstrated effectiveness, depending on the context. Social norms and simplification showed mixed results, whereas priming, loss aversion, feedback, comparison, and commitment had varying degrees of success in influencing behavior., Summary: Behavioral economics principles offer valuable insights and tools for enhancing various aspects of education. The review highlights the potential for using these principles to improve student engagement, enrollment processes, and health and well-being initiatives. However, it emphasizes the importance of context-specific design and careful implementation when applying these interventions. Graduating student pharmacists who are practice-ready is an essential responsibility of pharmacy programs and heavily emphasized by Accreditation Council of Pharmacy Education (ACPE), pharmacy education's accrediting body. Although several studies have examined students' readiness to engage in advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPE), few studies examine graduating students' readiness to practice. The objective of this study was to examine national trends in graduating pharmacy students' and preceptors' perceptions of students' pharmacy practice preparedness across a six-year time frame (2016-2021) and trends in graduating students' overall impressions of their program and the pharmacy profession across the same time period. A longitudinal descriptive study to examine trends in graduating student and preceptor perception was conducted utilizing data from the 2016-2021 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Graduating Student Surveys (GSS) (n = 65,461) and Preceptor Surveys (PS) (n = 41,951). Over six years of survey data analyzed, a large percentage of students at both public and private institutions reported they felt prepared for practice (96.5% vs 95.5% respectively, p < 0.001). There was overall agreement (>90%) among preceptors that graduating students were prepared to enter pharmacy practice based on responses, although preceptors had lower levels of agreement compared to students on most statements. Based on the findings, both graduating pharmacy students and preceptors feel that graduates are prepared to practice pharmacy, with consistent trends in perceptions over the last six years. Objective. To design and assess the use of a pharmacy student-delivered preceptor development program. Methods. A student-delivered preceptor development program was developed to ensure all preceptors received documented preceptor development. A menu of discussion topics and associated teaching sheets were created by the school's office of experiential education. On each rotation, advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) students led discussions with their preceptors on a topic chosen by the preceptor and submitted documentation of the education. Preceptors answered a survey related to the amount of information and time required for the program, their preference for different formats of preceptor development, one important thing they learned through the program, and future development topics of interest. Students were interviewed regarding their perceptions and use of the program. Results. A novel student-delivered preceptor development program resulted in documentation of preceptor development for all APPE rotations. Seventy-nine preceptors (31% response rate) participated in the survey. In their responses, preceptors generally agreed that they were able to customize their development and incorporate what they learned into practice, and that the program had a convenient format and was valuable for preparing students to be future preceptors. Students reported that the program improved their confidence in communicating with a supervisor and prepared them for precepting. Conclusion. A student-delivered preceptor development program improved documented preceptor development. The program allowed preceptors to customize development opportunities in a convenient format. Introduction: Availability of patient care services in rural areas is often lacking, which can reduce access to care for patients living in these areas. Patient care within community pharmacies is vital to care access in rural areas, but expanding pharmacy services can often be challenging. Pharmacy students, especially those on advanced pharmacy practice experiences, are positioned to make an impact on sites., Methods: The objective of this study was to describe the implementation, evaluation, and impact of a student scholarship program designed to increase patient care initiatives in rural community pharmacies. Scholarships were provided to students to expand patient care initiatives targeting chronic disease in select rural community pharmacies. Before and after participating in the scholarship program, students completed a survey assessing their perceived ability and confidence to initiate new patient care activities. In addition, patient care services provided by students were tracked and reported cumulatively., Results: During the first year of implementation, 24 student scholarship rotations were completed. Throughout the 24 rotations, 369 patients were screened for prediabetes, 391 were screened for hypertension, and 552 patients were screened for immunizations. The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) requires pharmacy students to complete 1440 hours of advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs). The majority of all APPE hours should be in direct patient care; however, non-patient care electives can also help to prepare students to become practice ready as well as allow them to explore areas of interest. Many pharmacy schools offer elective academic rotations, but an office of experiential education (OEE) academic rotation offers a unique academic elective. This Commentary describes an OEE APPE and includes the views of a preceptor and a pharmacy student regarding the experience. A detailed list of activities for an OEE APPE that can be easily duplicated by other schools is provided. Introduction: This study determined the need to calibrate preceptors' use of levels of entrustment (LOE) in the evaluation of students performing entrustable professional activities (EPAs)., Methods: Two introductory and four advanced pharmacy practice experience-focused cases were developed which described a fictional student, a practice site, and timing of a rotation. The cases included EPA-based tasks assigned to the student. Participants were to assign a LOE to the student for each EPA-based task., Results: Sixty of 317 preceptors participated in the study. Statistically significant differences in mean assigned LOE were found between preceptors by age (P < .05); between preceptors with differences in residency training (P < .05); and between preceptors who spent differing amounts of time with experiential students daily (P < .05)., Conclusions: Differences in assigned LOE were found based upon preceptor age, completion of a residency, and daily hours spent with experiential students. However, these differences did not result in changes to whether the student would pass or fail the rotation. Findings suggest that preceptors are consistent in assigning LOE to EPA-based tasks performed by students.
