In order to extend the dielectronic recombination (DR) experiments from the main cooler storage ring CSRm with intermediate charge state ions to the experimental cooler storage ring CSRe with highly charged ions and even radioactive ions, a test electron‐ion recombination experiment of B‐like Ar13+ ions was performed with a section of the new electron beam energy detuning system, which will be installed at the CSRe. We present the measured and also the calculated DR spectra for the ∆n = 0 resonances from 0 to 3 eV. The experimental results agree very well with the previous DR experimental data from CRYRING, and the energy resolution reached 30 meV full width at half maximum. This test experiment demonstrates that the reliability and stability of the newly developed electron beam energy detuning system are satisfactory for the upcoming DR experiments at the CSRe. However, we found large discrepancies between the experimental result and the calculation in both resonance positions and the intensities of the recombination spectrum below 0.7 eV, which indicate that precise calculation of the DR spectrum of multielectron ions is still a challenge. Dielectronic recombination (DR) experiments of highly charged ions at the storage rings have been developed as a precision spectroscopic tool to investigate the atomic structure as well as nuclear properties of stable and unstable nuclei. The DR experiment on lithium-like argon ions was successfully performed at main Cooler Storage Ring (CSRm) at Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL) accelerator complex. The DR experiments on heavy highly charged ions and even radioactive ions are currently under preparation at the experimental Cooler Storage Ring (CSRe) at HIRFL. The current status of DR experiments at the CSRm and the preparation of the DR experiments at the CSRe are presented. In addition, an overview of DR experiments by employing an electron cooler and a separated ultra-cold electron target at the upcoming High Intensity heavy ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) will be given. A new project, High Intensity heavy ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF), is currently being under design and construction in China. HIAF will provide beams of stable and unstable heavy ions with high energies, high intensities and high quality. We report on an experiment that was conducted in preparation of laser cooling experiments at the heavy-ion storage ring CSRe. The lifetimes of ion beams made up of 12 C 3+ and 16 O 4+ ions stored at an energy of 122 MeV/u in the CSRe were determined by two independent methods, firstly via a DC current transformer (DCCT) and secondly via a Schottky resonator. Using electron-cooling, the signals of the 12 C 3+ and 16 O 4+ ions could be separated and clearly observed in the Schottky spectrum. The obtained individual lifetimes of the 12 C 3+ and 16 O 4+ components were 23.6 s and 17.8 s, respectively. The proportion of 12 C 3+ ions in the stored ion beam was measured to be more than 70% at the beginning of the injection and increasing as a function of time. In addition to these measurements, the operation and remote control of a pulsed laser system placed directly next to the storage ring was tested in a setup similar to the one envisaged for future laser experiments. A significant deceleration effect on a stored coasting ion beam by a continuous-wave laser light was observed in the Schottky-noise spectrum during the laser experiments with lithium-like oxygen ion beams stored at a relativistic energy of 275.7 MeV/u at the heavy-ion storage ring CSRe in Lanzhou, China. The observed deceleration range of the laser (Δ p / p ≈ 5. 7 × 1 0 − 6 ) is much broader than the expected capture range (Δ p / p ≈ 3. 6 × 1 0 − 8 ), as calculated from the natural linewidth of the O 5 + ion's electronic transition (2 S 1 / 2 − 2 P 1 / 2). In order to explain this huge deviation, a phase space tracking code has been developed to investigate the interaction between the stored coasting ion beam and the laser light. Simulations reveal that the deceleration range of the typically narrow CW laser force is highly enlarged by taking into account the transverse betatron oscillation of the ions with larger emittance and the angular misalignment of the laser light direction. The experimental observation is well described by the systematic simulations. The present work is crucial for forthcoming laser cooling and precision laser spectroscopy experiments and simulations on heavy highly charged ions at the CSRe and the future facility HIAF. At the heavy ion storage ring HIRFL-CSRe an electron cooler is operated to improve the beam conditions for experiments. The properties of cooled beams have been studied. The longitudinal beam dynamics during the cooling process was measured by a resonant Schottky detector. The dependencies of the parameters electron beam density and profile on cooling times were investigated. The friction force was measured directly with the aid of the high voltage system of the cooler and with the application of the beam bunching system as well. The construction of the high-intensity heavy-ion accelerator facility (HIAF) Yang et al. (2013) [1] at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Science (IMP, CAS), has begun recently in Huizhou, Guangdong province, China. One of the devices of the HIAF is the Spectrometer Ring (SRing). Designed with two magnetic alloy (MA) loaded cavities to decelerate the heavy-ion beams, such as a 238U + 92 beam from 800 to 30 MeV/u, the SRing will serve as a multi-functional experimental storage ring. The MA cavity design works in the frequency range of 1.006-0.503 MHz with a maximum voltage of 50 kV and peak power of 220 kW. In the isochronous mass spectrometry (IMS) performed at storage rings, masses of short-lived nuclides are determined through precision measurements of their mean revolution times. However, the distribution of revolution times could be seriously deteriorated by instabilities of the ring's magnetic fields. This becomes a significant obstacle for the particle identifications and mass determinations. A data analysis method is described in this paper which is able to largely remove the uncertainties caused by the magnetic field instabilities in the particle identifications and the mean revolution times. We show that this method is very effective for the IMS experiments even when the magnetic fields of a storage ring vary slowly up to a level of Δ B ∕ B ∼ 1 0 − 4. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
