NSC KIPT proposed to construct a new X‐ray and soft ultraviolet source NESTOR with a 40 – 225 MeV electron storage ring in Kharkov. NESTOR is a new type radiation source on the base of Compton scattering and a storage ring. Electrons are injected in the storage ring at 100 MeV and ramped up to final energy of 225 MeV. So, using interaction angle 10° and 150°, the facility covers operation energy range of radiation from soft ultraviolet trough synchrotron radiation from bending magnets up to hard X‐ray radiation through Compton scattering (∼1 eV ∼1 MeV). It is supposed that stored electron beam current will be of about 200 mA. Along with use of Nd:Yag laser of 10 W average power which was developed by High‐Q laser firm and optical resonator with accumulation gain of about 1000 it allows to provide X‐ray radiation flux up to 1011 phot/s. NESTOR is the cooperative facility and its development is supported by Ukrainian government and NATO SfP project ♯977982. It is supposed that NESTOR will be in operation by mid‐2007 year. The status of the project and main facility systems are described in the report.NSC KIPT proposed to construct a new X‐ray and soft ultraviolet source NESTOR with a 40 – 225 MeV electron storage ring in Kharkov. Integration of Lorentz equation for a relativistic electron moving in the field of running, plane, linear polarized electromagnetic wave has been carried out. Using derived formulas for electron trajectories expressions for the radiation intensity spectrum were obtained. It is shown that for low intensity of the interacting electromagnetic wave the results of energy and angular spectrum calculations in the frame of classical electrodynamics completely coincide with calculation results produced using quantum electrodynamics. Simultaneously, derived expressions give possibilities to investigate dependence of energy and angular Compton radiation spectrum on phase of interaction and the interacting wave intensity. © 2007 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Nowadays, the sources of the X-rays based on a storage ring with low beam energy and Compton scattering of intense laser beam are under development in several laboratories. In the paper the state-of-art in development and construction of cooperative project of a Kharkov advanced X-ray source NESTOR based on electron storage ring with beam energy 43–225MeV and Nd:YAG laser are described. The layout of the facility is presented and latest results are described. The designed lattice includes 4 dipole magnets with combined focusing functions, 20 quadrupole magnets and 19 sextupoles with correcting components of magnetic field. At present, a set of quadrupole magnet is under manufacture and bending magnet reconstruction is going on. The main parameters of developed vacuum system providing residual gas pressure in the storage ring vacuum chamber up to 10−9 Torr are presented. The basic parameters of the X-ray source laser and injection systems are presented. The facility is going to be in operation from the middle of 2006 and generated X-ray flux is expected to be of about 1013 phot/s. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
