The article focuses on the impact of a stock market scam in Bombay, India on Standard Chartered Bank. Standard Chartered was the biggest loser. It got stuck for $515 million, and two of its employees were arrested on fraud charges. After reserves connected, with the Indian losses, Standard Chartered's profit before exceptional items was down 55%, to $303 million. But that's not the end of the mess. The bank is involved in 17 lawsuits. It has set up a 40-man recovery team of investigators and accountants. Running costs were around $45 million a year.
