The authors evaluated the adaptability of male nine‐spined sticklebacks (Pungitius sinensis) at three salinity levels (0, 5 and 10 psu) by comparing nest building success rates with nest structures. Successful nest building decreased as salinity increased. In addition, nests built in fresh water (i.e., 0 psu) were glued together, whereas those built in brackish water (5 and 10 psu) broke easily and fell from the nest site to the gravel bottom. The life history in a brackish water type of the ninespine stickleback, Pungitius pungitius, was studied by examining the strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) concentrations in the otoliths. The fluctuating patterns of Sr/Ca ratios along the life history transect in the otoliths varied widely among fish in spite of their identification as brackish water type as estimated by morphological characteristics. More than 70% fish showed the intermediate otolith Sr/Ca ratio throughout, averaging 5.23–7.71 × 10−3. Besides this brackish water resident life history type of P. pungitius, other sticklebacks had anadromous (25%) and freshwater amphidromous (2.5%) life history types. These findings clearly indicate that the migration of the ninespine stickleback between fresh and sea waters is obligatory but facultative having an ability to utilize the full range of salinity in its life history. The freshwater and Omono types of ninespine stickleback, Pungitius pungitius (L., 1758), coexist in several ponds and a stream in the Omono River system, Japan. We tested the hypothesis that coexistence of the two types is accomplished by resource partitioning through interspecific competition. First, the stomach contents of the two types were compared between sympatric and allopatric populations: the stomach contents of the sympatric freshwater type consisted of almost all Copepoda, whereas those of the sympatric Omono type consisted of not only Copepoda, but also many large benthic invertebrates; the stomach contents of both allopatric types were similar, consisting of Copepoda and large benthic invertebrates. Second, behaviour related to resource use in a sympatric pond was observed in the nonbreeding season: the freshwater type showed little aggressive behaviour, but the Omono type had a high frequency of aggressive behaviour. These results indicate that the sympatric freshwater type does not hold a feeding territory and its food resource is almost all Copepoda, whereas the Omono type has a feeding territory and its food resources are various. This suggests that asymmetric interference competition causes a diet shift of the sympatric freshwater type, allowing the two types to coexist by their resource partitioning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Japan sea form of the threespine stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, was found to spawn in the seawater tidal pool of the Cape Benkei, western Hokkaido Island, Japan, in 2001 and 2003. Nest-guarding males, adult females and juveniles of this form were also observed in four tidal pools of the Capes Benkei, Kabuto and Kamui, in 2001–2003. Otolith Sr:Ca ratios in sticklebacks collected from these tidal pools were relative high from the core to the edge, suggesting they lived in seawater environments throughout its life cycle. These findings suggest that a part of the Japan Sea formȁ9s individuals in western Hokkaido Island have the potential to breed in the coastal sea and the life history style has evolved in dependence on the seawater environment. We studied the life histories of the ninespine sticklebacks, Pungitius pungitius and Pungitius tymensis, collected from Japanese freshwater and brackish (sea) water habitats by examining the strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) concentrations in their otoliths. The Sr:Ca ratios in the otoliths changed with the salinity of the habitat regardless of identification as freshwater or brackish water type based on morphological characteristics. The ninespine sticklebacks living in a freshwater environment showed consistently low Sr:Ca ratios throughout the otolith. These samples were identified as a standard freshwater type. In contrast, all freshwater-type fishes collected from the intertidal zone showed higher otolith Sr:Ca ratios than those in the standard freshwater type, and the ratios fluctuated with the growth phase. All brackish water-type fishes collected in the intertidal zone showed the highest otolith Sr:Ca ratio throughout the otolith. In the present study, besides the two representative life history types of P. pungitius, i.e., freshwater and brackish water life history types, other sticklebacks had an anadromous life history type. These findings clearly indicate that the ninespine stickleback has a flexible migration strategy with a high degree of behavioral plasticity and an ability to utilize the full range of salinity in its life history. Threespine sticklebacks of the genus Gasterosteus, are small teleost fish that are widely distributed across the northern hemisphere. The fish is believed to have two major types of life history, freshwater resident and anadromous; however little is known about their migration ecology. Comprehensive research on the migratory history, habitat use and relative composition of migratory types was conducted by analysing the otolith strontium and calcium concentrations collected in various environments of northern Japan. The present study first demonstrated that approximately 90% of morphologically anadromous sticklebacks had estuarine resident migration pattern, consistently living in brackish water and/or marine environments through their life cycle without any time spent in freshwater. The dominant occurrence of the estuarine resident was temporally and spatially consistent with their general migration ecology. The estuarine resident is thought to be the ancestral migrations of G. aculeatus and G. nipponicus, which thereafter gradually immigrated into freshwater habitats and settled in the anadromous form in both species and finally became the freshwater resident G. aculeatus. Thus, this study provides novel insights into the evolutionary migration of these fish, as well as a new discovery regarding the dominant migratory history and habitat use in threespine sticklebacks.
