Abstract

Intrinsic, diffusion-driven toroidal (bootstrap) currents between −7 and 17 kA were measured in the optimised stellarator Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) for several magnetic configurations at line-integrated plasma densities between 2 × 1019 and 1.6 × 1020 m−2 and heating powers between 0.5 and 6 MW. The sign of the bootstrap current changes with field reversal, and its magnitude decreases with the mirror term and the rotational transform of the magnetic configuration as well as the line-integrated plasma density, and increases with the heating power. Both the absolute values and the dependencies agree with neoclassical calculations within their respective uncertainties, confirming the neoclassical optimisation of W7-X for small bootstrap currents. Abstract

The edge magnetic structure in the Helically Symmetric eXperiment (HSX) and Wendelstein 7X (W7-X) stellarators has been shown to have a significant impact on the particle fueling and exhaust of the plasma main species (hydrogen) as well as impurity helium. For HSX, the plasma sourcing to exhaust ratio, quantified by the effective and global particle confinement times τ p * and τ p , H , respectively, increases when a magnetic island chain is located in the plasma edge. The fueling efficiency is reduced by 25% when the plasma boundary is deformed by the magnetic islands. The X-point geometry also yields higher plasma temperatures in front of the main recycling region. When the island is moved radially inward, both τ p * and τp decrease by 10 % – 25 % depending on plasma density. The τ p , H results rely heavily on EMC3-EIRENE modeling which confirms reduced fueling efficiency due to more rapid ionization in the outward shifted island position. These findings suggest that for a helically optimized system like HSX, the plasma fueling from the recycling source, as well as from active gas injection, can be controlled by the magnetic island chain in the plasma edge—which is a basic requirement for a divertor system. This process is also effective for the control of effective helium exhaust times, as τ p , H e * measured by perturbative gas puff experiments is reduced by up to 40% when the islands are shifted inwards. For Wendelstein 7-X, a similar reduction of τ p , H e * was inferred when magnetic islands were moved from the far plasma edge into the confined plasma region. However, the effective confinement features of H as the main plasma species were not affected due to the non-optimal position of the magnetic islands with respect to the highly localized ionization domain during the limiter startup campaign. Abstract

Consistent physics and engineering models are required for many use cases at Wendelstein 7-X. Web service technology is used to provide convenient access to common software components and experiment data. The usage of standard web protocols allows the integration in client software written in any programming language. This leads to a better reusability of expert codes and experiment data by a large international team. At W7-X, web services provide common functions such as Biot–Savart calculations and magnetic field line tracing. Further services provide access to databases for diagnostic data or machine models. A new web service was implemented for the creation of 3D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibrium calculations and a user-friendly access to the results. Consistent interface definitions allow an orchestration of the W7-X web services by user code, as well as a seamless integration into a data analysis framework. Abstract

Wendelstein 7-X, a superconducting optimized stellarator built in Greifswald/Germany, started its first plasmas with the last closed flux surface (LCFS) defined by 5 uncooled graphite limiters in December 2015. At the end of the 10 weeks long experimental campaign (OP1.1) more than 20 independent diagnostic systems were in operation, allowing detailed studies of many interesting plasma phenomena. For example, fast neutral gas manometers supported by video cameras (including one fast-frame camera with frame rates of tens of kHz) as well as visible cameras with different interference filters, with field of views covering all ten half-modules of the stellarator, discovered a MARFE-like radiation zone on the inboard side of machine module 4. This structure is presumably triggered by an inadvertent plasma-wall interaction in module 4 resulting in a high impurity influx that terminates some discharges by radiation cooling. The main plasma parameters achieved in OP1.1 exceeded predicted values in discharges of a length reaching 6 s. Although OP1.1 is characterized by short pulses, many of the diagnostics are already designed for quasi-steady state operation of 30 min discharges heated at 10 MW of ECRH. Abstract

For the W7-X stellarator a diagnostic system for measurement of local Zeff values from the visible bremsstrahlung continuum is foreseen. The method is based on passive, absolute measurement of the bremsstrahlung intensity along several lines of sight. In order to eliminate the spurious impact of other radiation sources of different spectral intensity distribution than the bremsstrahlung, like the line radiation, it is intended to spectrally resolve the detected radiation, e.g., by use of microspectrometers. The visible bremsstrahlung background can be extracted by making use of the 1/λ2 dependence of its intensity (expressed in unit W/m3 sr nm) in the high temperature plasmas by using Bayesian data analysis techniques. In a second step, the local values of Zeff as a function of the effective plasma radius are derived by inversion, using different regularization methods, of the line-integrated bremsstrahlung signals with the knowledge of the magnetic flux surfaces. Inversion of the full model based on statistical methods allows taking into account all conceivable uncertainties accompanying Zeff measurement and provides uncertainties of the local Zeff values and valuable information on other uncertain parameters of the model. In this paper we show the first steps in developing a virtual Zeff diagnostic for W7-X which allows the optimization of the statistical model as well as of the future diagnostic setup. Abstract

• Bootstrap current was measured in all reference magnetic configurations of OP1.2a. • Experimental profiles can be reliably mapped with vacuum pre-calculated equilibria. • VMEC calculations show good agreement with Minerva and V3FIT reconstruction. Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is a modular advanced stellarator, which successfully went into operation in December 2015 at the Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik in Greifswald, Germany, and continued to thrive at the experimental campaign with the first divertor phase in August-December 2017. The nested magnetic surfaces in W7-X are created by a system of 3-D toroidally discrete coils, providing both toroidal and poloidal field components, and designed with the aim to create optimum equilibrium properties. The optimization criteria included the high quality of vacuum magnetic surfaces, good finite beta equilibrium and MHD-stability properties as well as a substantial reduction of the neoclassical transport and bootstrap current in comparison to classical stellarators. Equilibrium calculations, devoted to the analysis of the experiment programs dedicated to measure the bootstrap current, were performed with help of the Variational Moments Equilibrium Code, available as Wendelstein 7-X web service. Pressure profiles based on experimental data served as an input for calculations. The mapping of measurements using pre-calculated equilibria for different beta values has been analyzed. A comparison with reconstruction results obtained by means of the Minerva Framework, considering only experimental data of magnetics measurements, and the V3FIT code is presented. Abstract

We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been maintained for tens of seconds. Pellet fueling allows for plasma phases with reduced ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, and during such phases, the overall confinement is so good (energy confinement times often exceeding 200 ms) that the attained density and temperature profiles would not have been possible in less optimized devices, since they would have had neoclassical transport losses exceeding the heating applied in W7-X. This provides proof that the reduction of neoclassical transport through magnetic field optimization is successful. W7-X plasmas generally show good impurity screening and high plasma purity, but there is evidence of longer impurity confinement times during turbulence-suppressed phases.
