The paper considers the possibility of determining the mechanical characteristics of low-carbon steels by the acoustic method. By the example of the 09G2S steel test samples, it is shown that temperature decrease has a significant effect on the values of impact strength and leads to steel embrittlement, which is determined by the high proportion of the brittle component in the fracture. A method for controlling the brittle-viscous transition temperature (T
BVT ) by the acoustic method is proposed. The comparison of the TBVT measurement results obtained by the acoustic and fractographic methods demonstrates that the difference in the data measured by the indicated methods does not exceed 10%. The results of the research can be used in production and operating conditions for testing 09G2S steel products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published
