Outer-rotor switched reluctance machines (SRMs) have drawn much attention as promising candidates for in-wheel direct-drive motors of future electric vehicles. This article presents a systematic performance comparison of three outer-rotor SRM topologies for in-wheel traction applications in terms of the specific torque, electromagnetic efficiency, torque ripple, radial force, and mechanical aspects. A generalized design optimization framework for SRMs is proposed to enable the fast evaluation of large numbers of designs generated from the differential evolution by incorporating an analytical current profile estimation into the transient finite element analysis. The relationship between the saliency ratio and converter volt-ampere rating is also discussed. The calculations are then benchmarked with the experimental results from an existing prototype. Axial-flux permanent-magnet machines are used particularly in applications requiring a compact structure. Their disc-shaped topology and axial airgap have led to a variety of configurations including two popular ones: the yokeless and segmented armature (YASA), and the single-stator single-rotor or single-sided machine. In this study, a comprehensive comparative analysis of these configurations is conducted at different magnetic and electric loadings. It is found that at lower loadings, typically employed for air-cooled machines, the torque/ampere characteristics of the YASA machine are almost identical to those of a single-sided machine constructed with half the magnet volume. On the other hand, the single-sided machine outperforms the YASA machine when the magnet volumes in both machines are maintained equal. However, for higher electric loadings, the torque/ampere characteristics of the YASA machine droop significantly less than those of the single-sided machine. This article includes analytical estimations, which are verified with experimentally validated finite element analysis (FEA) simulations. A fast finite element (FE) based method for the calculation of eddy current losses in the stator windings of randomly wound electric machines is presented in this paper. The method is particularly suitable for implementation in large-scale design optimization algorithms where a qualitative characterization of such losses at higher speeds is most beneficial for identification of the design solutions that exhibit the lowest overall losses including the ac losses in the stator windings. Unlike the common practice of assuming a constant slot fill factor $s_f$ for all the design variations, the maximum $s_f$ in the developed method is determined based on the individual slot structure/dimensions and strand wire specifications. Furthermore, in lieu of detailed modeling of the conductor strands in the initial FE model, which significantly adds to the complexity of the problem, an alternative rectangular coil modeling subject to a subsequent flux mapping technique for determination of the impinging flux on each individual strand is pursued. Rather than pursuing the precise estimation of ac conductor losses, the research focus of this paper is placed on the development of a computationally efficient technique for the derivation of strand eddy current losses applicable in design optimization, especially where both the electromagnetic and thermal machine behavior are accounted for. A fractional-slot concentrated winding permanent magnet synchronous machine is used for the purpose of this study due to the higher slot leakage flux and slot opening fringing flux of such machines, which are the major contributors to strand eddy current losses in the windings. The analysis is supplemented with an investigation on the influence of the electrical loading on ac winding loss effects for this machine design, a subject that has received less attention in the literature. Switched reluctance (SR) machines are attractive because they present relatively high efficiency and torque density in spite of lacking permanent magnets. This paper focuses on a two-objective optimization of an external rotor SR motor with a stator that has concentrated coils and a rotor with magnetically isolated modules. The objectives are minimum loss and mass, and 11 independent dimensionless geometric variables are considered as inputs that affect them. A combined design of experiments (DOE) and differential evolution (DE) approach is proposed. The DOE methodology is used to reduce the search space by eliminating from consideration input variable values, leading to poor-performing designs. Following this initial DOE study, an optimization study based on DE is run over the reduced search space, which leads to significant savings in computation time. Furthermore, a directed graph-based method for comparing different designs on the Pareto front to rank the best compromise designs is proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes a systematic method for optimally designing with multiple objectives and differential evolution (DE) algorithms, current regulated electronically controlled synchronous reluctance (SynRel) machines. A large-scale study with thousands of designs calculated with a ultrafast computationally efficient electromagnetic finite-element analysis (CE-FEA) establishes the performance limitations of conventional radially laminated technology with multiple flux barriers. The potential advantages of employing permanent-magnet (PM)-assisted technology with additional ferrites in the rotor are quantified in terms of substantially improved power factor, specific power, and efficiency. Removing some sections of the stator yoke in a permanent-magnet brushless machine can be beneficial for reducing punching waste and simplifying motor manufacture. However, in some cases, restricting the possible flux paths, in this way, will have a detrimental impact on the torque and air-gap harmonics. This paper discusses the potential implications of modular stator core arrangements and presents the air-gap flux density harmonics and winding factors for potential slot/pole combinations. Finite-element analysis (FEA) simulations are presented to support the analytical calculations. The analysis indicates that the performance reduction from using a modular stator is minimal when the number of slots and poles are similar but drops off substantially when this is not the case. A modular core stator will increase the MMF subharmonics due to the magnet field but can reduce the subharmonics due to the armature if a single-layer winding is used. In this paper, a multiobjective design optimization method combining design-of-experiments techniques and differential-evolution algorithms is presented. The method was implemented and utilized in order to provide practical engineering insights for the optimal design of interior and spoke-type permanent-magnet machines. Two combinations with 12 slots and 8 poles and 12 slots and 10 poles, respectively, have been studied in conjunction with rare-earth neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) and ferrites. As part of the optimization process, a computationally efficient finite-element electromagnetic analysis was employed for estimating the performance of thousands of candidate designs. Three optimization objectives were concurrently considered for minimum total material cost, power losses, and torque ripple, respectively. Independent variables were considered for both the stator and rotor geometries. A discussion based on a systematic comparison is included, showing, among other things and despite common misconception, that comparable cost versus loss Paretos can be achieved with any of the rotor topologies studied. The design optimization methods described in this paper are employing an ultrafast computationally efficient finite element analysis technique. A minimum number of magnetostatic solutions are used for the analysis, which makes possible the study of thousands of candidate motor designs with typical PC-workstation computational resources. A multi-objective differential evolution algorithm that considers a large number of independent stator and rotor geometric variables and performance criteria, such as average and ripple torque, losses, and efficiency, is used. The optimization method is demonstrated on different permanent magnet (PM) ac synchronous motors in the kilowatt and megawatt power ranges. For the low-power PM ac machine study, a nine-slot six-pole topology is considered. For the high-power PM ac machines, four case studies were carried out with the following: fractional-slot embedded surface PM (SPM), fractional-slot interior PM (IPM), integer-slot SPM, and integer-slot IPM, respectively. Four motor topologies are systematically compared based on optimal Pareto sets. The behavior of rotor eccentricities in current-regulated interior-permanent-magnet machines is investigated. The study focuses on two typical topologies of significant industrial relevance: machines with distributed windings with two slots per pole and phase and motors with concentrated coils and three slots per pole pair. The effect of stator-winding parallel paths is examined for both cases. Coil and terminal electrical quantities and radial forces were simulated using finite-element analysis. Unbalanced operation, where the currents are not equal in parallel phase connections due to eccentricity, is also investigated. Experimental measurements of electrical quantities and forces on motors with static eccentricity are carried out using two special test setups.
