The wise use of statistical ideas in practice essentially requires some Bayesian thinking, in contrast to the classical rigid frequentist dogma. This dogma too often has seemed to influence the applications of statistics, even at agencies like the FDA. Greg Campbell was one of the most important advocates there for more nuanced modes of thought, especially Bayesian statistics. Because two brilliant statisticians, Ronald Fisher and Jerzy Neyman, are often credited with instilling the traditional frequentist approach in current practice, I argue that both men were actually seeking very Bayesian answers, and neither would have endorsed the rigid application of their ideas.

This article describes how and why I became involved in consulting for the tobacco industry. I briefly discuss the four relatively distinct statistical topics that were the primary focus of my work, all of which have been central to my published academic research for over three decades: missing data; causal inference; adjustment for covariates in observational studies; and meta-analysis. To me, it is entirely appropriate to present the application of this academic work in a legal setting.

"In this article we describe a logistic regression modeling approach for nonresponse in the [U.S.] Post-Enumeration Survey (PES) that has desirable theoretical properties and that has performed well in practice.... In the 1990 PES, interviews were not obtained from approximately 1.2% of households in the sample, and approximately 2.1% of the individuals in interviewed households were considered unresolved after follow-up....The missing binary enumeration statuses for these unresolved cases were replaced with probabilities estimated under a statistical model that incorporated covariate information observed for these cases. Multiple imputation for non-response replaces each missing value by two or more plausible values. The values can be chosen to represent both uncertainty about the reasons for non-response and uncertainty about which values to impute assuming the reasons for non-response are known. This paper provides an overview of methods for creating and analysing multiply-imputed data sets, and illustrates the dramatic improvements possible when using multiple rather than single imputation. A major application of multiple imputation to public-use files from the 1970 census is discussed, and several exploratory studies related to health care that have used multiple imputation are described.
