Protoplanetary discs are a natural consequence of the star formation process and as such are ubiquitous around low-mass stars. They are fundamental to planet formation as they hold the reservoir of material from which planets form. Their evolution and final dispersal and the timescales that regulate these process are therefore of particular interest. In this contribution I will review the observational evidence for the dispersal of discs being dominated by two timescales and for the final dispersal to occur quickly and from the inside out. I will discuss the current theoretical models, including X-ray photoevaporation, showing that the latter provides a natural explanation to the observed behaviour and review supporting and contrasting evidence. I will finally introduce a new mechanism based on the interaction between planet formation and photoevaporation that may explain a particular class of transition discs with large inner holes and high accretion rates that are problematic for photoevaporation models and planet formation models alone. We examine the combined effects of winds and photoionizing radiation from O-type stars on embedded stellar clusters formed in model turbulent molecular clouds covering a range of masses and radii. We find that feedback is able to increase the quantities of dense gas present, but decreases the rate and efficiency of the conversion of gas to stars relative to control simulations in which feedback is absent. Star formation in these calculations often proceeds at a rate substantially slower than the freefall rate in the dense gas. This decoupling is due to the weakening of, and expulsion of gas from, the deepest parts of the clouds' potential wells where most of the star formation occurs in the control simulations. This results in large fractions of the stellar populations in the feedback simulation becoming dissociated from dense gas. However, where star formation does occur in both control and feedback simulations, it does so in dense gas, so the correlation between star formation activity and dense gas is preserved. The overall dynamical effects of feedback on the clusters are minimal, with only small fraction of stars becoming unbound, despite large quantities of gas being expelled from some clouds. This owes to the settling of the stars into virialized and stellar-dominated configurations before the onset of feedback. By contrast, the effects of feedback on the observable properties of the clusters - their U-, B- and V-band magnitudes - are strong and sudden. Constraining the spatial and thermal structure of the gaseous component of circumstellar disks is crucial for understanding star and planet formation. Models predict that the [Ne II] line at 12.81μm detected in young stellar objects (YSOs) with Spitzer traces disk gas and its response to high-energy radiation, but such [Ne II] emission may also originate in shocks within powerful outflows. To distinguish between these potential origins for mid-infrared [Ne II] emission and to constrain disk models, we observed 32 YSOs using the high-resolution (R ~ 30,000) mid-infrared spectrograph VISIR at the Very Large Telescope. We detected the 12.81μm [Ne II] line in 12 objects, tripling the number of detections of this line in YSOs with high spatial and spectral resolution spectrographs. We obtain the following main results. (1) In Class I objects the [Ne II] emission observed from Spitzer is mainly due to gas at a distance of more than 20-40 AU from the star, where neon is, most likely, ionized by shocks due to protostellar outflows. (2) In transition and pre-transition disks, most of the emission is confined to the inner disk, within 20-40 AU from the central star. (3) Detailed analysis of line profiles indicates that, in transition and pre-transition disks, the line is slightly blueshifted (2-12 km s-1) with respect to the stellar velocity, and the line width is directly correlated with the disk inclination, as expected if the emission is due to a disk wind. (4) Models of EUV/X-ray-irradiated disks reproduce well the observed relation between the line width and the disk inclination, but underestimate the blueshift of the line. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We model the combined effects of photoionization and momentum-driven winds from O-stars on molecular clouds spanning a parameter space of initial conditions. The dynamical effects of the winds are very modest. However, in the lower mass clouds, they influence the morphologies of the H ii regions by creating 10-pc-scale central cavities. The inhomogeneous structures of the model giant molecular clouds (GMCs) make them highly permeable to photons, ionized gas and supernova ejecta, and the leaking of ionized gas in particular strongly affects their evolution, reducing the effectiveness of feedback. Nevertheless, feedback is able to expel large fractions of the mass of the lower escape velocity clouds. Its impact on star formation is more modest, decreasing final star formation efficiencies by 10–20 per cent, and the rate of change of the star formation efficiency per freefall time by about one third. We extend our previous smoothed particle hydrodynamics parameter study of the effects of photoionization from O-stars on star-forming clouds to include initially unbound clouds. We generate a set of model clouds in the mass range 104–106 M⊙ with initial virial ratios Ekin/Epot = 2.3, allow them to form stars and study the impact of the photoionizing radiation produced by the massive stars. We find that, on the 3 Myr time-scale before supernovae are expected to begin detonating, the fraction of mass expelled by ionizing feedback is a very strong function of the cloud escape velocities. High-mass clouds are largely unaffected dynamically, while low-mass clouds have large fractions of their gas reserves expelled on this time-scale. However, the fractions of stellar mass unbound are modest and significant portions of the unbound stars are so only because the clouds themselves are initially partially unbound. We find that ionization is much more able to create well-cleared bubbles in the unbound clouds, owing to their intrinsic expansion, but that the presence of such bubbles does not necessarily indicate that a given cloud has been strongly influenced by feedback. We also find, in common with the bound clouds from our earlier work, that many of the systems simulated here are highly porous to photons and supernova ejecta, and that most of them will likely survive their first supernova explosions. The time-scale over which and the modality by which young stellar objects (YSOs) disperse their circumstellar discs dramatically influence the eventual formation and evolution of planetary systems. By means of extensive radiative transfer modelling, we have developed a new set of diagnostic diagrams in the infrared colour–colour plane (K − [24] versus K − [8]), to aid with the classification of the evolutionary stage of YSOs from photometric observations. Our diagrams allow the differentiation of sources with unevolved (primordial) discs from those evolving according to different clearing scenarios (e.g. homologous depletion versus inside-out dispersal), as well as from sources that have already lost their disc. Classification of over 1500 sources in 15 nearby star-forming regions reveals that approximately 39 per cent of the sources lie in the primordial disc region, whereas between 31 and 32 per cent disperse from the inside-out and up to 22 per cent of the sources have already lost their disc. Less than 2 per cent of the objects in our sample lie in the homogeneous draining regime. Time-scales for the transition phase are estimated to be typically a few 105 yr independent of stellar mass. Therefore, regardless of spectral type, we conclude that currently available infrared photometric surveys point to fast (of the order of 10 per cent of the global disc lifetime) inside-out clearing as the preferred mode of disc dispersal. ABSTRACT We present a detailed study of star formation occurring in bound star-forming clouds under the influence of internal ionizing feedback from massive stars across a spectrum of cloud properties. We infer which objects are triggered by comparing our feedback simulations with control simulations in which no feedback was present. We find that feedback always results in a lower star formation efficiency and usually but not always results in a larger number of stars or clusters. Cluster mass functions are not strongly affected by feedback, but stellar mass functions are biased towards lower masses. Ionization also affects the geometrical distribution of stars in ways that are robust against projection effects, but may make the stellar associations more or less subclustered depending on the background cloud environment. We observe a prominent pillar in one simulation which is the remains of an accretion flow feeding the central ionizing cluster of its host cloud and suggest that this may be a general formation mechanism for pillars such as those observed in M16. We find that the association of stars with structures in the gas such as shells or pillars is a good but by no means foolproof indication that those stars have been triggered and we conclude overall that it is very difficult to deduce which objects have been induced to form and which formed spontaneously simply from observing the system at a single time. The lifetime of protoplanetary discs is intimately linked to the mechanism responsible for their dispersal. Since the formation of planets within a disc must operate within the time frame of disc dispersal, it is crucial to establish what is the dominant process that disperses the gaseous component of discs around young stars. Planet formation itself as well as photoevaporation by energetic radiation from the central young stellar object has been proposed as plausible dispersal mechanisms. There is, however, still no consensus as what the dominant process may be. In this paper, we use the different metallicity dependence of X-ray photoevaporation and planet formation to discriminate between these two processes. We study the effects of metallicity, Z, on the dispersal time-scale, tphot, in the context of a photoevaporation model, by means of detailed thermal calculations of a disc in hydrostatic equilibrium irradiated by extreme ultraviolet and X-ray radiation from the central source. Our models show for a pure photoevaporation model. By means of analytical estimates, we derive instead a much stronger negative power dependence on metallicity of the disc lifetime for a dispersal model based on planet formation. A census of disc fractions in lower metallicity regions should therefore be able to distinguish between the two models. A recent study by Yasui et al. in low-metallicity clusters of the extreme outer Galaxy ( and dust-to-gas ratio of ∼0.001) provides preliminary observational evidence for shorter disc lifetimes at lower metallicities, in agreement with the predictions of a pure photoevaporation model. While we do not exclude that planet formation may indeed be the cause of some of the observed discs with inner holes, these observational findings and the models and analysis presented in this work are consistent with X-ray photoevaporation as the dominant disc dispersal mechanism. We finally develop an analytical framework to study the effects of metallicity-dependent photoevaporation on the formation of gas giants in the core accretion scenario. We show that accounting for this effect strengthens the conclusion that planet formation is favoured at higher metallicity. We find, however, that the metallicity dependence of photoevaporation only plays a secondary role in this scenario, with the strongest effect being the positive correlation between the rate of core formation and the density of solids in the disc. We have analysed deep optical spectra of the ‘born-again’ planetary nebula Abell 58 and its hydrogen-deficient knot, surrounding V605 Aql, which underwent a nova-like eruption in 1919. Our analysis shows that the extinction towards the central knot is much higher than previously thought, with . The outer nebula is less reddened, with . We find that the outer nebula has a Ne/O ratio higher than the average PN value. The electron temperature we derive for the central knot varies widely depending on the diagnostic used. The [O iii] nebular-to-auroral transition ratio gives a temperature of 20 800 K, while the ratio of the [N ii] nebular and auroral lines gives Te= 15 200 K. The helium line ratios λ5876/λ4471 and λ6678/λ4471 imply temperatures of 350 and 550 K, respectively. Weakly temperature-sensitive O ii recombination line ratios imply similarly low electron temperatures. Abundances derived from recombination lines are vastly higher than those found from collisionally excited lines, with the abundance discrepancy factor (ADF) for O2+ reaching 89 – the second highest known value after that found for the hydrogen-deficient knots in Abell 30. The observed temperature diagnostics and abundances support the idea that, like Abell 30, the knot of Abell 58 contains some very cold ionized material. Although the central star is carbon-rich (C/O > 1), the knot is found to be oxygen-rich, a situation not predicted by the single-star ‘born-again’ theory of its formation. We compare the known properties of Abell 58 to those of Abell 30, Sakurai's Object and several novae and nova remnants. We argue that the abundances in the ejecta observed in A 30 and A 58 have more in common with neon novae than with Sakurai's Object, which is believed to have undergone a final helium flash. In particular, the C/O ratio of less than unity and the presence of substantial quantities of neon in the ejecta of both Abell 30 and Abell 58 are not predicted by very late thermal pulse models. We present a new fast algorithm which allows the simulation of ionizing radiation emitted from a point source to be included in high-resolution three-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of star cluster formation. We employ a Strömgren volume technique in which we use the densities of particles near the line-of-sight between the source and a given target particle to locate the ionization front in the direction of the target. Along with one-dimensional tests, we present fully three-dimensional comparisons of our code with the three-dimensional Monte Carlo radiative transfer code,mocassin, and show that we achieve good agreement, even in the case of highly complex density fields. Star formation within galaxies appears on multiple scales, from spiral structure, to OB associations, to individual star clusters, and often substructure within these clusters. This multitude of scales calls for objective methods to find and classify star-forming regions, regardless of spatial size. To this end, we present an analysis of star-forming groups in the local group spiral galaxy M33, based on a new implementation of the minimum spanning tree method. Unlike previous studies which limited themselves to a single spatial scale, we study star-forming structures from the effective resolution limit (∼20 pc) to kpc scales. Once the groups are identified, we study their properties, for example, size and luminosity distributions, and compare them with studies of young star clusters and giant molecular clouds (GMCs). We find evidence for a continuum of star-forming group sizes, which extends into the star cluster spatial scale regime. We do not find a characteristic scale for OB associations, unlike that found in previous studies, and we suggest that the appearance of such a scale was caused by spatial resolution and selection effects. The luminosity function of the groups is found to be well represented by a power law with an index, −2, the same as has been found for the luminosity and mass functions (MFs) of young star clusters, as well as the MF of GMCs. Additionally, the groups follow a similar mass–radius relation as GMCs. The size distribution of the groups is best described by a lognormal distribution, the peak of which is controlled by the spatial scale probed and the minimum number of sources used to define a group. We show that within a hierarchical distribution, if a scale is selected to find structure, the resulting size distribution will have a lognormal distribution. We find an abrupt drop of the number of groups outside a galactic radius of ∼4 kpc (although individual high-mass stars are found beyond this limit), suggesting a change in the structure of the star-forming interstellar medium, possibly reflected in the lack of GMCs beyond this radius. Finally, we find that the spatial distribution of H ii regions, GMCs, and star-forming groups are all highly correlated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a brief review of the formation and evolution of hydrogen-deficient central stars of planetary nebulae. We include a detailed description of the main observable features of both the central stars and their surrounding nebulae and review their main classifications. We also provide a brief description of the possible progenitor systems of hydrogen-deficient central stars as well as of transients, which are closely connected to the formation of these stars. In particular, we offer a detailed theoretical explanation of the main evolutionary scenarios, both single and binary, which is devised to explain these stars and nebulae. Particular emphasis is made in the description of the so-called born again scenario, their quantitative predictions, and uncertainties. Finally, we discuss the pros and cons of both binary and single evolution channels, draw some conclusions, and discuss open questions in the field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The two main competing theories proposed to explain the formation of massive (>10 M ⊙) stars—competitive accretion and monolithic core collapse—make different observable predictions for the environment of the massive stars during, and immediately after, their formation. Proponents of competitive accretion have long predicted that the most massive stars should have a different spatial distribution to lower-mass stars, through the stars being either mass segregated or being in areas of higher relative densities or sitting deeper in gravitational potential wells. We test these predictions by analyzing a suite of smoothed-particle hydrodynamics simulations where star clusters form massive stars via competitive accretion with and without feedback. We find that the most massive stars have higher relative densities, and sit in deeper potential wells, only in simulations in which feedback is not present. When feedback is included, only half of the simulations have the massive stars residing in deeper potential wells, and there are no other distinguishing signals in their spatial distributions. Intriguingly, in our simple models for monolithic core collapse, the massive stars may also end up in deeper potential wells because if massive cores fragment then the stars that form are also massive, and dominate their local environs. We find no robust diagnostic test in the spatial distributions of massive stars that can distinguish their formation mechanisms, and so other predictions for distinguishing between competitive accretion and monolithic collapse are required. The formation of protostars and their disks has been understood as the result of the gravitational collapse phase of an accumulation of dense gas that determines the mass reservoir of the star-disk system. Against this background, the broadly applied scenario of considering the formation of disks has been to model the collapse of a dense core assuming spherical symmetry. Our understanding of the formation of star-disk systems is currently undergoing a reformation though. The picture evolves from interpreting disks as the sole outcome of the collapse of an isolated prestellar core to a more dynamic picture where disks are affected by the molecular cloud environment in which they form. In this review, we provide a status report of the state-of-the-art of spherical collapse models that are highly advanced in terms of the incorporated physics together with constraints from models that account for the possibility of infall onto star-disk systems in simplified test setups, as well as in multi-scale simulations that cover a dynamical range from the Giant Molecular Cloud environment down to the disk. Considering the observational constraints that favor a more dynamical picture of star formation, we finally discuss the challenges and prospects in linking the efforts of tackle the problem of star-disk formation in combined multi-scale, multi-physics simulations. Stars are among the most fundamental structures of our Universe. They comprise most of the baryonic and luminous mass of galaxies; synthesize heavy elements; and inject mass, momentum, and energy into the interstellar medium. They are also home to the planets. Because stellar properties are primarily decided by their mass, the so-called stellar initial mass function (IMF) is critical to the structuring of our Universe. We review the various physical processes and theories that have been put forward as well as the numerical simulations that have been carried out to explain the origin of the stellar IMF. Key messages from this review include the following: Gravity and turbulence most likely determine the power-law, high-mass part of the IMF. Depending of the Mach number and the density distribution, several regimes are possible, including ΓIMF ≃ 0, −0.8, −1, or −1.3, where dN/d log M ∝ MΓIMF. These regimes are likely universal; however, the transition between these regimes is not. Protostellar jets can play a regulating influence on the IMF by injecting momentum into collapsing clumps and unbinding gas. The peak of the IMF may be a consequence of dust opacity and molecular hydrogen physics at the origin of the first hydrostatic core. This depends weakly on large-scale environmental conditions such as radiation, magnetic field, turbulence, or metallicity. This likely constitutes one reason for the relative universality of the IMF. Molecular clouds are prime locations to study the process of star formation. These clouds contain filamentary structures and cores, which are crucial sites for the formation of young stars. The star-formation process has been investigated using various techniques, including polarimetry, for tracing magnetic fields. In this small review-cum-short report, we put together the efforts (mainly from the Indian community) to understand the roles of turbulence and magnetic fields in star formation. These are two components of the ISM competing against gravity, which is primarily responsible for the collapse of gas to form stars. We also include attempts made using simulations of molecular clouds to study this competition. Studies on feedback and magnetic fields are combined and listed to understand the importance of the interaction between two energies in setting the current observed star formation efficiency. We have listed available and upcoming facilities with the polarization capabilities needed to trace magnetic fields. We have also stated the importance of ongoing and desired collaborations between Indian communities and facilities abroad to shed more light on the roles of turbulence and magnetic fields in the process of star formation. We present NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array observations covering the NGC 1977 region at 3.0, 6.4, and 15.0 GHz. We search for compact radio sources and detect continuum emission from 34 NGC 1977 cluster members and 37 background objects. Of the 34 radio-detected cluster members, 3 are associated with known proplyds in NGC 1977, 22 are associated with additional young stellar objects in NGC 1977, and 9 are newly identified cluster members. We examine the radio spectral energy distributions, circular polarization, and variability of the detected NGC 1977 sources and identify 10 new candidate proplyds whose radio fluxes are dominated by optically thin free–free emission. We use measurements of free–free emission to calculate the mass-loss rates of known proplyds and new candidate proplyds in NGC 1977, and find values ∼10−9 to 10−8 M ⊙ yr−1, which are lower than the mass-loss rates measured toward proplyds in the Orion Nebula Cluster but consistent with the mass-loss rates predicted by external photoevaporation models for spatially extended disks that are irradiated by the typical external ultraviolet (UV) fields encountered in NGC 1977. Finally, we show that photoevaporative disk winds in NGC 1977 may be illuminated by internal or external sources of ionization, depending on their positions within the cluster. This study provides new constraints on disk properties in a clustered star-forming region with a weaker UV environment than the Orion Nebula Cluster but a stronger UV environment than low-mass star-forming regions like Taurus. We measure the CO-to-H2 conversion factor (α CO) in 37 galaxies at 2 kpc resolution, using the dust surface density inferred from far-infrared emission as a tracer of the gas surface density and assuming a constant dust-to-metal ratio. In total, we have ∼790 and ∼610 independent measurements of α CO for CO (2–1) and (1–0), respectively. The mean values for α CO (2–1) and α CO (1–0) are 9.3 − 5.4 + 4.6 and 4.2 − 2.0 + 1.9 M ⊙ pc − 2 (K km s − 1) − 1 , respectively. The CO-intensity-weighted mean is 5.69 for α CO (2–1) and 3.33 for α CO (1–0). We examine how α CO scales with several physical quantities, e.g., the star formation rate (SFR), stellar mass, and dust-mass-weighted average interstellar radiation field strength ( U ¯ ). Among them, U ¯ , ΣSFR, and the integrated CO intensity (W CO) have the strongest anticorrelation with spatially resolved α CO. We provide linear regression results to α CO for all quantities tested. At galaxy-integrated scales, we observe significant correlations between α CO and W CO, metallicity, U ¯ , and ΣSFR. We also find that α CO in each galaxy decreases with the stellar mass surface density (Σ⋆) in high-surface-density regions (Σ⋆ ≥ 100 M ⊙ pc−2), following the power-law relations α CO (2 – 1) ∝ Σ ⋆ − 0.5 and α CO (1 – 0) ∝ Σ ⋆ − 0.2 . The power-law index is insensitive to the assumed dust-to-metal ratio. We interpret the decrease in α CO with increasing Σ⋆ as a result of higher velocity dispersion compared to isolated, self-gravitating clouds due to the additional gravitational force from stellar sources, which leads to the reduction in α CO. The decrease in α CO at high Σ⋆ is important for accurately assessing molecular gas content and star formation efficiency in the centers of galaxies, which bridge "Milky Way–like" to "starburst-like" conversion factors. Radiation transport plays a crucial role in star formation models, as certain questions within this field cannot be accurately addressed without taking it into account. Given the high complexity of the interstellar medium from which stars form, numerical simulations are frequently employed to model the star formation process. This study reviews recent methods for incorporating radiation transport into star formation simulations, discussing them in terms of the used algorithms, treatment of radiation frequency dependence, the interaction of radiation with the gas, and the parallelization of methods for deployment on supercomputers. Broadly, the algorithms fall into two categories: i) moment-based methods, encompassing the flux-limited diffusion approximation, M1 closure, and variable Eddington tensor methods, and ii) methods directly solving the radiation transport equation, including forward and reverse ray tracing, characteristics-based methods, and Monte Carlo techniques. Beyond discussing advantages and disadvantages of these methods, the review also lists recent radiation hydrodynamic codes implemented the described methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We perform radiation hydrodynamics simulations to study the structure and evolution of a photoevaporating protoplanetary disk. Ultraviolet and X-ray radiation from the host star heats the disk surface, where H2 pumping also operates efficiently. We run a set of simulations in which we varied the number of dust grains or the dust-to-gas mass ratio, which determines the relative importance between photoelectric heating and H2 pumping. We show that H2 pumping and X-ray heating contribute more strongly to the mass loss of the disk when the dust-to-gas mass ratio is D ≤ 10 − 3 . The disk mass-loss rate decreases with a lower dust amount, but remains around 10−10−11 M ⊙yr−1. In these dust-deficient disks, H2 pumping enhances photoevaporation from the inner disk region and shapes the disk mass-loss profile. We thus argue that the late-stage disk evolution is affected by the ultraviolet H2 pumping effect. Context. Protostellar disks are the product of angular momentum conservation during protostellar collapse. Understanding their formation is crucial because they are the birthplace of planets and their formation is also tightly related to star formation. Unfortunately, the initial properties of Class 0 disks and their evolution are still poorly constrained both theoretically and observationally. Aims. We aim to better understand the mechanisms that set the statistics of disk properties as well as to study their formation in massive protostellar clumps. We also want to provide the community with synthetic disk populations to better interpret young disk observations. Methods. We used the ramses code to model star and disk formation in massive protostellar clumps with magnetohydrodynamics, including the effect of ambipolar diffusion and radiative transfer as well as stellar radiative feedback. Those simulations, resolved up to the astronomical unit scale, have allowed us to investigate the formation of disk populations. Results. Magnetic fields play a crucial role in disk formation. A weaker initial field leads to larger and massive disks and weakens the stellar radiative feedback by increasing fragmentation. We find that ambipolar diffusion impacts disk and star formation and leads to very different disk magnetic properties. The stellar radiative feedback also have a strong influence, increasing the temperature and reducing fragmentation. Comparing our disk populations with observations reveals that our models with a mass-to-flux ratio of 10 seems to better reproduce observed disk sizes. This also sheds light on a tension between models and observations for the disk masses. Conclusions. The clump properties and physical modeling significantly impact disk populations. It is critical to for the tension, with respect to disk mass estimates, between observations and models to be solved with synthetic observations. Context. Feedback from young massive stars has an important impact on the star formation potential of their parental molecular clouds. Aims. We investigate the physical properties of gas structures under feedback in the G333 complex using data of the 13CO J = 3–2 line observed with the LAsMA heterodyne camera on the APEX telescope. Methods. We used the Dendrogram algorithm to identify molecular gas structures based on the integrated intensity map of the 13CO (3–2) emission, and extracted the average spectra of all structures to investigate their velocity components and gas kinematics. Results. We derive the column density ratios between different transitions of the 13CO emission pixel by pixel, and find the peak values N2−1/N1−0 ≈ 0.5, N3−2/N1−0 ≈ 0.3, and N3−2/N2−1 ≈ 0.5. These ratios can also be roughly predicted by the nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) molecular radiative transfer code RADEX for an average H2 volume density of ~4.2 × 103 cm−3. A classical virial analysis does not reflect the true physical state of the identified structures, and we find that external pressure from the ambient cloud plays an important role in confining the observed gas structures. For high-column-density structures, velocity dispersion and density show a clear correlation that is not seen for low-column-density structures, indicating the contribution of gravitational collapse to the velocity dispersion. Branch structures show a more significant correlation between 8 μm surface brightness and velocity dispersion than leaf structures, implying that feedback has a greater impact on large-scale structures. For both leaf and branch structures, σ − N * R always has a stronger correlation compared to σ − N and σ − R. The scaling relations are stronger, and have steeper slopes when considering only self-gravitating structures, which are the structures most closely associated with the Heyer relation. Conclusions. Although the feedback disrupting the molecular clouds will break up the original cloud complex, the substructures of the original complex can be reorganized into new gravitationally governed configurations around new gravitational centers. Context. Stellar feedback plays a crucial role in star formation and the life cycle of molecular clouds. The intense star formation region 30 Doradus, which is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), is a unique target for detailed investigation of stellar feedback owing to the proximity of the hosting galaxy and modern observational capabilities that together allow us to resolve individual molecular clouds – nurseries of star formation. Aims. We study the impact of large-scale feedback on the molecular gas using the new observational data in the 12CO(3 − 2) line obtained with the APEX telescope. Methods. Our data cover an unprecedented area of 13.8 sq. deg. of the LMC disc with a spatial resolution of 5 pc and provide an unbiased view of the molecular clouds in the galaxy. Using these data, we located molecular clouds in the disc of the galaxy, estimated their properties, such as the areal number density, relative velocity and separation, width of the line profile, CO line luminosity, size, and virial mass, and compared these properties of the clouds of 30 Doradus with those in the rest of the LMC disc. Results. We find that, compared with the rest of the observed molecular clouds in the LMC disc, those in 30 Doradus show the highest areal number density; they are spatially more clustered, they move faster with respect to each other, and they feature larger linewidths. In parallel, we do not find statistically significant differences in such properties as the CO line luminosity, size, and virial mass between the clouds of 30 Doradus and the rest of the observed field. Characterizing the physical properties of dust grains in a protoplanetary disk is critical to comprehending the planet formation process. Our study presents Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) high-resolution observations of the young protoplanetary disk around DG Tau at a 1.3 mm dust continuum. The observations, with a spatial resolution of ≈0.″04, or ≈5 au, revealed a geometrically thin and smooth disk without substantial substructures, suggesting that the disk retains the initial conditions of the planet formation. To further analyze the distributions of dust surface density, temperature, and grain size, we conducted a multiband analysis with several dust models, incorporating ALMA archival data of the 0.87 and 3.1 mm dust polarization. The results showed that the Toomre Q parameter is ≲2 at a 20 au radius, assuming a dust-to-gas mass ratio of 0.01. This implies that a higher dust-to-gas mass ratio is necessary to stabilize the disk. The grain sizes depend on the dust models, and for the DSHARP compact dust, they were found to be smaller than ∼400 μ m in the inner region (r ≲ 20 au) while exceeding larger than 3 mm in the outer part. Radiative transfer calculations show that the dust scale height is lower than at least one-third of the gas scale height. These distributions of dust enrichment, grain sizes, and weak turbulence strength may have significant implications for the formation of planetesimals through mechanisms such as streaming instability. Spectro-astrometry is applied to echelle spectra of the young intermediate-mass star T CrA. The aim is to better understand the origin of the [O i ] and [S ii ] emission from T CrA and further explore the usefulness of spectro-astrometry in the search for a reliable tracer of MHD disk winds. The analysis reveals a small-scale curved jet in an east–west direction and inclined parallel to the plane of the sky. It is the inclination of this jet that led to the classification of the forbidden emission lines as a low-velocity component. Thus, spectro-astrometry highlights here that for close to edge-on disks spatial information is necessary. The position angle of the jet is not perpendicular to the position angle of the accretion disk nor does it agree with older observations of outflows likely driven by T CrA. The mass outflow rate of 5–10 × 10−8 M ⊙ yr−1 is within the range for intermediate-mass stars. We conclude that more than one outflow is driven by the T CrA system and that the curvature seen in the first detection of an outflow from T CrA and in the data presented here is likely due to the multiplicity of the system. The process of accretion through circumstellar disks in young stellar objects is an integral part of star formation and the H α emission line is a prominent signature of accretion in low-mass stars. We present the detection and characterization of H α emission line sources in the central region of a distant, low-metallicity young stellar cluster Dolidze 25 (at ∼ 4.5 kpc) using medium-resolution optical spectra (4750–9350 Å) obtained with the multi-unit spectroscopic explorer (MUSE) at the VLT. We have identified 14 potential accreting sources within a rectangular region of ( 2 ′ × 1 ′ ) towards the center of the cluster based on the detection of strong and broad emissions in H α as well as the presence of other emission lines, such as [OI] and H β . Based on their positions in both photometric color–magnitude and color–color diagrams, we have also confirmed that these objects belong to the pre-main sequence phase of star formation. Our results were compared with the disk and diskless members of the cluster previously identified by Guarcello et al. (2021) using near-IR colors, and all sources they had identified as disks were confirmed to be accreting based on the spectroscopic characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A direct comparison between hydrodynamical simulations and observations is needed to improve the physics included in the former and to test biases in the latter. Post-processing radiative transfer and synthetic observations are now the standard way to do this. We report on the first application of the SKIRT radiative-transfer code to simulations of a star-forming cloud. The synthetic observations are then analyzed following traditional observational workflows. We find that in the early stages of the simulation, stellar radiation is inefficient in heating dust to the temperatures that are observed in Galactic clouds, thus the addition of an interstellar radiation field is necessary. The spectral energy distribution of the cloud settles rather quickly after ∼3 Myr of evolution from the onset of star formation, but its morphology continues to evolve for ∼8 Myr due to the expansion of H ii regions and the respective creation of cavities, filaments, and ridges. Modeling synthetic Herschel fluxes with one- or two-component modified blackbodies underestimates total dust masses by a factor of ∼2. However, spatially resolved fitting recovers up to about 70% of the intrinsic value. This "missing mass" is located in a very cold dust component with temperatures below 10 K, which does not contribute appreciably to the far-infrared flux. This effect could bias real observations if this dust exists in large amounts. Finally, we tested observational calibrations of the SFR based on infrared fluxes and concluded that they are in agreement when compared to the intrinsic SFR of the simulation averaged over ∼100 Myr. We employ the Feedback In Realistic Environments (FIRE-2) physics model to study how the properties of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) evolve during galaxy mergers. We conduct a pixel-by-pixel analysis of molecular gas properties in both the simulated control galaxies and galaxy major mergers. The simulated GMC pixels in the control galaxies follow a similar trend in a diagram of velocity dispersion (σ v ) versus gas surface density (Σmol) to the one observed in local spiral galaxies in the Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS (PHANGS) survey. For GMC pixels in simulated mergers, we see a significant increase of a factor of 5–10 in both Σmol and σ v , which puts these pixels above the trend of PHANGS galaxies in the σ v versus Σmol diagram. This deviation may indicate that GMCs in the simulated mergers are much less gravitationally bound compared with simulated control galaxies with virial parameters (α vir) reaching 10–100. Furthermore, we find that the increase in α vir happens at the same time as the increase in global star formation rate, which suggests that stellar feedback is responsible for dispersing the gas. We also find that the gas depletion time is significantly lower for high- α vir GMCs during a starburst event. This is in contrast to the simple physical picture that low- α vir GMCs are easier to collapse and form stars on shorter depletion times. This might suggest that some other physical mechanisms besides self-gravity are helping the GMCs in starbursting mergers collapse and form stars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Identifying and characterizing young populations of star-forming regions are crucial to unraveling their properties. In this regard, Gaia-DR3 data and machine-learning tools are very useful for studying large star-forming complexes. In this work, we analyze the ∼7.1 deg2 area of one of our Galaxy's dominant feedback-driven star-forming complexes, i.e., the region around Trumpler 37. Using the Gaussian mixture and random-forest classifier methods, we identify 1243 highly probable members in the complex, of which ∼60% are new members and are complete down to the mass limit of ∼0.1–0.2 M ⊙. The spatial distribution of the stars reveals multiple clusters toward the complex, where the central cluster around the massive star HD 206267 reveals two subclusters. Of the 1243 stars, 152 have radial velocity, with a mean value of −16.41 ± 0.72 km s−1. We investigate stars' internal and relative movement within the central cluster. The kinematic analysis shows that the cluster's expansion is relatively slow compared to the whole complex. This slow expansion is possibly due to newly formed young stars within the cluster. Context. The Carina Nebula is one of the major massive star-forming regions in the Galaxy. Its relatively nearby distance (2.35 kpc) makes it an ideal laboratory for the study of massive star formation, structure, and evolution, both for individual stars and stellar systems. Thanks to the high-quality spectra provided by the Gaia-ESO survey and the LiLiMaRlin library, as well as Gaia EDR3 astrometry, a detailed and homogeneous spectroscopic characterization of its massive stellar content can be carried out. Aims. Our main objective is to spectroscopically characterize all massive members of the Carina Nebula in the Gaia-ESO survey footprint to provide an updated census of massive stars in the region and an updated estimate of the binary fraction of O stars. Methods. We performed accurate spectral classification using an interactive code that compares spectra with spectral libraries of OB standard stars, as well as line-based classic methods. We calculated membership using our own algorithm based on Gaia EDR3 astrometry. To check the correlation between the spectroscopic n-qualifier and the rotational velocity, we used a semi-automated tool for the line-broadening characterization of OB stars based on a combined Fourier transform and goodness-of-fit methodology. Results. The Gaia-ESO survey sample of massive OB stars in the Carina Nebula consists of 234 stars. The addition of brighter sources from the Galactic O-Star Spectroscopic Survey and additional sources from the literature allows us to create the most complete census of massive OB stars so far in the region. It contains a total of 316 stars, with 18 of them in the background and 4 in the foreground. Of the 294 stellar systems in Car OB1, 74 are of O type, 214 are of nonsupergiant B type, and 6 are of WR or nonO supergiant (II to Ia) spectral class. We identify 20 spectroscopic binary systems with an O-star primary, of which 6 are reported for the first time, and another 18 with a B-star primary, of which 13 are new detections. The average observed double-lined binary fraction of O-type stars in the surveyed region is 0.35, which represents a lower limit. We find a good correlation between the spectroscopic n-qualifier and the projected rotational velocity of the stars. The fraction of candidate runaways among the stars with and without the n-qualifier is 4.4% and 2.4%, respectively, although nonresolved double-lined binaries could be contaminating the sample of fast rotators. Multiwavelength images from the Hubble Space Telescope covering the wavelength range 0.27–1.6 μ m show that the central area of the nearby dwarf galaxy NGC 4449 contains several tens of compact sources that are emitting in the hydrogen recombination line Pa β (1.2818 μ m) but are only marginally detected in H α (0.6563 μ m) and undetected at wavelengths λ ≤ 0.55 μ m. An analysis of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these sources indicates that they are likely relatively young stellar clusters heavily attenuated by dust. The selection function used to identify the sources prevents meaningful statistical analyses of their age, mass, and dust extinction distributions. However, these cluster candidates have ages ∼5–6 Myr and A V > 6 mag, according to their SED fits, and are extremely compact, with typical deconvolved radii of 1 pc. The dusty clusters are located at the periphery of the dark clouds within the galaxy and appear to be partially embedded. Density and pressure considerations indicate that the H ii regions surrounding these clusters may be stalled, and that pre-supernova (pre-SN) feedback has not been able to clear the clusters of their natal cocoons. These findings are in potential tension with existing models that regulate star formation with pre-SN feedback, since pre-SN feedback acts on short timescales, ≲4 Myr, for a standard stellar initial mass function. The existence of a population of dusty stellar clusters with ages >4 Myr, if confirmed by future observations, paints a more complex picture for the role of stellar feedback in controlling star formation. Herbig Ae/Be stars are young contracting stars on the radiative track in the HR diagram on their way to the main sequence. These stars provide a valuable link between high and low mass stars. Here we review the progress that has been made in our understanding of these fascinating objects and their disks since the last major review on this topic published in 1998. We begin with a general overview of these stars and their properties. We then discuss the accretion of circumstellar material onto these stars. Next we discuss the dust and gas properties of the circumstellar disk before exploring the evidence for planet formation in these disks. We conclude with a brief discussion of future prospects for deepening our understanding of these sources and propose a new working definition of Herbig Ae/Be stars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The science case on studies of accretion and outflows in low-mass (<1.5 M ⊙ ) young stellar objects (YSOs) with the new CUBES instrument is presented. We show the need for a high-sensitivity, near-ultraviolet (NUV) spectrograph like CUBES, with a resolving power at least four times that of X-Shooter and combined with UVES via a fibrelink for simultaneous observations. Simulations with the CUBES exposure time calculator and the end-to-end software show that a significant gain in signal-to-noise can be achieved compared to current instruments, for both the spectral continuum and emission lines, including for relatively embedded YSOs. Our simulations also show that the low-resolution mode of CUBES will be able to observe much fainter YSOs (V ∼ 22 mag) in the NUV than we can today, allowing us extend studies to YSOs with background-limited magnitudes. The performance of CUBES in terms of sensitivity in the NUV will provide important new insights into the evolution of circumstellar disks, by studying the accretion, jets/winds and photo-evaporation processes, down to the low-mass brown dwarf regime. CUBES will also open-up new science as it will be able to observe targets that are several magnitudes fainter than those reachable with current instruments, facilitating studies of YSOs at distances of ∼ kpc scale. This means a step-change in the field of low-mass star formation, as it will be possible to expand the science case from relatively local star-forming regions to a large swathe of distances within the Milky Way. With steady observational advances, the formation of massive stars is being understood in more detail. Numerical models are converging on a scenario where accretion discs play a key role. Direct observational evidence of such discs at a few au scales is scarce, due to the rarity of such objects and the observational challenges, including the lack of adequate diagnostic lines in the near-IR. We present the analysis of K -band spectro-interferometric observations toward the Massive Young Stellar Object IRAS 13481-6124, which is known to host an accreting dusty disc. Using GRAVITY on the VLTI, we trace the crucial au-scales of the warm inner interface between the star and the accretion dusty disc. We detect and spatially resolve the Na i doublet and He i transitions towards an object of this class for the first time. The new observations in combination with our geometric models allowed us to probe the smallest au-scales of accretion/ejection around a MYSO. We find that Na i originates in the disc at smaller radii than the dust disc and is more compact than any of the other spatially resolved diagnostics (Brγ, He  i , and CO). Our findings suggest that Na i can be a new powerful diagnostic line in tracing the warm star/disc accreting interface of forming (massive) stars, while the similarities between He  i and Brγ point towards an accretion/ejection origin of He  i. The goal of the Ariel space mission is to observe a large and diversified population of transiting planets around a range of host star types to collect information on their atmospheric composition. The planetary bulk and atmospheric compositions bear the marks of the way the planets formed: Ariel's observations will therefore provide an unprecedented wealth of data to advance our understanding of planet formation in our Galaxy. A number of environmental and evolutionary factors, however, can affect the final atmospheric composition. Here we provide a concise overview of which factors and effects of the star and planet formation processes can shape the atmospheric compositions that will be observed by Ariel, and highlight how Ariel's characteristics make this mission optimally suited to address this very complex problem. We use an unprecedented sample of about 23 000 H II regions detected at an average physical resolution of 67 pc in the PHANGS–MUSE sample to study the extragalactic H II region Hα luminosity function (LF). Our observations probe the star-forming disk of 19 nearby spiral galaxies with low inclination and located close to the star formation main sequence at z = 0. The mean LF slope, α, in our sample is =1.73 with a σ of 0.15. We find that α decreases with the galaxy's star formation rate surface density, ΣSFR, and argue that this is driven by an enhanced clustering of young stars at high gas surface densities. Looking at the H II regions within single galaxies, we find that no significant variations occur between the LF of the inner and outer part of the star-forming disk, whereas the LF in the spiral arm areas is shallower than in the inter-arm areas for six out of the 13 galaxies with clearly visible spiral arms. We attribute these variations to the spiral arms increasing the molecular clouds' arm–inter-arm mass contrast and find suggestive evidence that they are more evident for galaxies with stronger spiral arms. Furthermore, we find systematic variations in α between samples of H II regions with a high and low ionization parameter, q, and argue that they are driven by the aging of H II regions. When modeling astronomical objects throughout the universe, it is important to correctly treat the limitations of the data, for instance finite resolution and sensitivity. In order to simulate these effects, and to make radiative transfer models directly comparable to real observations, we have developed an open-source Python package called the FluxCompensator that enables the post-processing of the output of 3D Monte Carlo radiative transfer codes, such as Hyperion. With the FluxCompensator, realistic synthetic observations can be generated by modeling the effects of convolution with arbitrary point-spread functions, transmission curves, finite pixel resolution, noise, and reddening. Pipelines can be applied to compute synthetic observations that simulate observatories, such as the Spitzer Space Telescope or the Herschel Space Observatory. Additionally, this tool can read in existing observations (e.g., FITS format) and use the same settings for the synthetic observations. We investigate the trapping of interstellar objects during the early stages of star and planet formation. Our results show a very wide range of possible values that will be narrowed down as the population of interstellar objects becomes better characterized. When assuming a background number density of 2 · 1015 pc−3 (based on 1I's detection), a velocity dispersion of 30 km s−1, and an equilibrium size distribution, the number of interstellar objects captured by a molecular cloud and expected to be incorporated to each protoplanetary disk during its formation is O(109) (50 cm–5 m), O(105) (5–50 m), O(102) (50–500 m), O(10−2) (500 m–5 km). After the disk has formed, the number of interstellar objects it can capture from the ISM during its lifetime is 6 · 1011 (50 cm–5 m), 2 · 108 (5–50 m), 6 · 104 (50–500 m), 20 (500 m–5 km); in an open cluster where 1% of stars have undergone planet formation, these values increase by a factor of O(102–103). These trapped interstellar objects might be large enough to rapidly grow into larger planetesimals via the direct accretion of the subcm-sized dust grains in the protoplanetary disk before they drift in due to gas drag, helping overcome the meter-size barrier, acting as "seeds" for planet formation. One of the computational challenges of cluster formation simulations is resolving individual stars and simulating massive clusters with masses of more than 104  M ⊙ without gravitational softening. Combining a direct N -body code with smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) code, we have developed a new code, ASURA+BRIDGE, in which we can integrate stellar particles without softening. We add a feedback model for H  ii regions into this code, in which thermal and momentum feedback is given within the Strömgren radius. We perform N -body/SPH simulations of star cluster formation. Without softening, a portion of massive stars are ejected from the forming clusters. As a result, the stellar feedback works outside the clusters. This enhances/suppresses the star formation in initially sub-virial/super-virial clouds. We find that the formed star clusters are denser than currently observed open clusters, but the mass–density relation is consistent with or even higher than that which is estimated as an initial cluster density. We also find that some clusters have multiple peaks in their stellar age distribution as a consequence of their hierarchical formation. Irrespective of the virial ratio of molecular clouds, approximately one-third of stars remain in the star clusters after gas expulsion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Most stars are formed as star clusters in galaxies, which then disperse into galactic disks. Upcoming exascale supercomputational facilities will enable simulations of galaxies and their formation by resolving individual stars (star-by-star simulations). This will substantially advance our understanding of star formation in galaxies, star cluster formation, and assembly histories of galaxies. In previous galaxy simulations, a simple stellar population approximation was used. It is, however, difficult to improve the mass resolution with this approximation. Therefore, a model for forming individual stars that can be used in simulations of galaxies must be established. In this first paper of a series from the SIRIUS (SImulations Resolving IndividUal Stars) project, we demonstrate a stochastic star formation model for star-by-star simulations. An assumed stellar initial mass function (IMF) is randomly assigned to newly formed stars in this model. We introduce a maximum search radius to assemble the mass from surrounding gas particles to form star particles. In this study, we perform a series of N -body/smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of star cluster formations from turbulent molecular clouds and ultra-faint dwarf galaxies as test cases. The IMF can be correctly sampled if a maximum search radius that is larger than the value estimated from the threshold density for star formation is adopted. In small clouds, the formation of massive stars is highly stochastic because of the small number of stars. We confirm that the star formation efficiency and threshold density do not strongly affect the results. We find that our model can naturally reproduce the relationship between the most massive stars and the total stellar mass of star clusters. Combining infrared and submillimeter observations and applying a two-temperature modified blackbody (TMBB) model with a hierarchical Bayesian technique, we model the spectral energy distribution of 12 nearby dwarf irregular (dIrr) galaxies. We aim to probe potential submillimeter excess emission at 350, 500, and 850 μm and investigate the properties of cold dust parameters. Based on the TMBB model with cold dust emissivity index (βc) fixed to 2, one galaxy shows 500 μm excess emission and nine galaxies show excess at 850 μm (five of them still show 850 μm excess in the case of free βc). We find that the 850 μm excess emission is easily detected in the dIrr galaxies with low star formation activity. The 850 μm excess is more frequent and more prominent in dIrr galaxies with low molecular hydrogen gas mass fraction or low ratios between cold dust mass and gas mass. As galaxies evolve, the ratios between atomic hydrogen gas mass and stellar mass decrease and the 850 μm excess emission tends to decrease or even disappear. Our results suggest that the cold dust temperature may increase, as the dIrr galaxies have more intense star formation or richer metallicity. There is a weak anticorrelation between the cold dust-to-stellar mass ratio and the specific star formation rate for our galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate what drives the redshift evolution of the typical electron density (ne) in star-forming galaxies, using a sample of 140 galaxies drawn primarily from KMOS3D (0.6 < z < 2.6) and 471 galaxies from SAMI (z < 0.113). We select galaxies that do not show evidence of active galactic nucleus activity or outflows to constrain the average conditions within H ii regions. Measurements of the [S ii ]λ6716/[S ii ]λ6731 ratio in four redshift bins indicate that the local ne in the line-emitting material decreases from 187 cm−3 at z ∼ 2.2 to 32 cm−3 at z ∼ 0, consistent with previous results. We use the Hα luminosity to estimate the rms ne averaged over the volumes of star-forming disks at each redshift. The local and volume-averaged ne evolve at similar rates, hinting that the volume filling factor of the line-emitting gas may be approximately constant across 0 ≲ z ≲ 2.6. The KMOS3D and SAMI galaxies follow a roughly monotonic trend between ne and star formation rate, but the KMOS3D galaxies have systematically higher ne than the SAMI galaxies at a fixed offset from the star-forming main sequence, suggesting a link between the ne evolution and the evolving main sequence normalization. We quantitatively test potential drivers of the density evolution and find that ne(rms) , suggesting that the elevated ne in high-z H ii regions could plausibly be the direct result of higher densities in the parent molecular clouds. There is also tentative evidence that ne could be influenced by the balance between stellar feedback, which drives the expansion of H ii regions, and the ambient pressure, which resists their expansion. Star formation is a fundamental process for galactic evolution. One issue over the last several decades has been determining whether star formation is induced by external triggers or self-regulated in a closed system. The role of an external trigger, which can effectively collect mass in a small volume, has attracted particular attention in connection with the formation of massive stellar clusters, which in extreme cases may lead to starbursts. Recent observations have revealed massive cluster formation triggered by cloud–cloud collisions in nearby interacting galaxies, including the Magellanic system and the Antennae Galaxies as well as almost all well-known high-mass star-forming regions in the Milky Way, such as RCW 120, M 20, M 42, NGC 6334, etc. Theoretical efforts are going into the foundation for the mass compression that causes massive cluster/star formation. Here, we review the recent progress on cloud–cloud collisions and the triggered star-cluster formation, and discuss future prospects for this area of study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on a study of the high-mass star formation in the H  ii region W 28 A2 by investigating the molecular clouds that extend over ∼5–10 pc from the exciting stars using the 12CO and 13CO (J = 1–0) and 12CO (J = 2–1) data taken by NANTEN2 and Mopra observations. These molecular clouds consist of three velocity components with CO intensity peaks at V LSR ∼ −4 km s−1, 9 km s−1, and 16 km s−1. The highest CO intensity is detected at V LSR ∼ 9 km s−1, where the high-mass stars with spectral types O6.5–B0.5 are embedded. We found bridging features connecting these clouds toward the directions of the exciting sources. Comparisons of the gas distributions with the radio continuum emission and 8 μm infrared emission show spatial coincidence/anti-coincidence, suggesting physical associations between the gas and the exciting sources. The 12CO J = 2–1 to 1–0 intensity ratio shows a high value (≳0.8) toward the exciting sources for the −4 km s−1 and +9 km s−1 clouds, possibly due to heating by the high-mass stars, whereas the intensity ratio at the CO intensity peak (V LSR ∼ 9 km s−1) decreases to ∼0.6, suggesting self absorption by the dense gas in the near side of the +9 km s−1 cloud. We found partly complementary gas distributions between the −4 km s−1 and +9 km s−1 clouds, and the −4 km s−1 and +16 km s−1 clouds. The exciting sources are located toward the overlapping region in the −4 km s−1 and +9 km s−1 clouds. Similar gas properties are found in the Galactic massive star clusters RCW 38 and NGC 6334, where an early stage of cloud collision to trigger the star formation is suggested. We investigate the impact of ram pressure stripping due to the intracluster medium (ICM) on star-forming disk galaxies with a multiphase interstellar medium maintained by strong stellar feedback. We carry out radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of an isolated disk galaxy embedded in a 1011M⊙ dark matter halo with various ICM winds mimicking the cluster outskirts (moderate) and the central environment (strong). We find that both star formation quenching and triggering occur in ram pressure–stripped galaxies, depending on the strength of the winds. H i and H2 in the outer galactic disk are significantly stripped in the presence of moderate winds, whereas turbulent pressure provides support against ram pressure in the central region, where star formation is active. Moderate ICM winds facilitate gas collapse, increasing the total star formation rates by ∼40% when the wind is oriented face-on or by ∼80% when it is edge-on. In contrast, strong winds rapidly blow away neutral and molecular hydrogen gas from the galaxy, suppressing star formation by a factor of 2 within ∼200 Myr. Dense gas clumps with nH ≳ 10 M⊙ pc−2 are easily identified in extraplanar regions, but no significant young stellar populations are found in such clumps. In our attempts to enhance radiative cooling by adopting a colder ICM of T = 106 K, only a few additional stars are formed in the tail region, even if the amount of newly cooled gas increases by an order of magnitude. Circumplanetary discs (CPDs) that form around young gas giants are thought to be the sites of moon formation as well as an intermediate reservoir of gas that feeds the growth of the gas giant. How the physical properties of such CPDs are affected by the planetary mass and the overall opacity is relatively poorly understood. In order to clarify this, we used the global radiation hydrodynamics code FARGOCA with a grid structure that allows sufficient resolution of the planetary gravitational potential for a CPD to form. We then studied the gas flows and density–temperature structures that emerge as a function of planet mass, opacity, and potential depth. Our results indicate interesting structure formation for Jupiter-mass planets at low opacities, which we subsequently analysed in detail. Using an opacity level that is 100 times lower than that of the dust of the interstellar medium, our Jupiter-mass protoplanet features an envelope that is sufficiently cold for a CPD to form, and a free-fall region separating the CPD and the circumstellar disc that emerges. Interestingly, this free-fall region appears to be the result of supersonic erosion of outer envelope material, as opposed to the static structure formation that one would expect at low opacities. Our analysis reveals that the planetary spiral arms seem to pose a significant pressure barrier that needs to be overcome through radiative cooling in order for gas to be accreted onto the CPD. The circulation inside the CPD is near-Keplerian and is modified by the presence of CPD spiral arms. The same is true when we increase the planetary potential depth, which in turn increases the planetary luminosity, quenches the formation of a free-fall region, and decreases the rotation speed of the envelope by 10%. For high opacities, we recover results from the literature, finding an almost featureless hot envelope. With this work, we demonstrate the first simulation and analysis of a complete detachment process of a protoplanet from its parent disc in a 3D radiation hydrodynamics setting. The trans-Neptunian object 2014 MU69, named Arrokoth, is the most recent evidence that planetesimals did not form by successive collisions of smaller objects, but by the direct gravitational collapse of a pebble cloud. But what process sets the physical scales on which this collapse may occur? Star formation has the Jeans mass, that is, when gravity is stronger than thermal pressure, helping us to understand the mass of our Sun. But what controls mass and size in the case of planetesimal formation? Both asteroids and Kuiper Belt objects show a kink in their size distribution at 100 km. Here we derive a gravitational collapse criterion for a pebble cloud to fragment to planetesimals, showing that a critical mass is needed for the clump to overcome turbulent diffusion. We successfully tested the validity of this criterion in direct numerical simulations of planetesimal formation triggered by the streaming instability. Our result can therefore explain the sizes for planetesimals found forming in streaming instability simulations in the literature, while not addressing the detailed size distribution. We find that the observed characteristic diameter of ∼100 km corresponds to the critical mass of a pebble cloud set by the strength of turbulent diffusion stemming from streaming instability for a wide region of a solar nebula model from 2 to 60 au, with a tendency to allow for smaller objects at distances beyond and at late times, when the nebula gas gets depleted. The bubble G15.684-0.29 has a radius of 15.7 pc. Its large size indicates that it may have enough time to trigger star formation. We identify 39 dense cold clumps around the bubble from the Hi-GAL survey. All of them satisfy the criteria for forming massive stars, and most of them lie in the bubble shell. We identify 19 molecular clumps around the bubble from the 12CO(3–2) survey, all of which are gravitationally bound. We found 9 Class I YSOs, 28 Class II YSOs, and 12 transition disks (TDs) around the bubble. For those young stellar objects (YSOs) located within the bubble boundary, 6 of 7 Class I YSOs lie in the shell, 15 of 22 Class II YSOs lie inside the bubble, and 3 of 5 TDs lie inside the bubble. The dynamical age of G15.684-0.29 in a turbulent medium is ∼4 Myr, which is much greater than the shell fragmentation time, ∼0.82–1.74 Myr. We suggest that triggered star formation may be ongoing in the shell of the bubble, and the collect and collapse model may work here. However, we cannot rule out the possibility that the radiation-driven implosion model may work on the formation of some YSOs. Giant molecular clouds (GMCs) and their stellar offspring are the building blocks of galaxies. The physical characteristics of GMCs and their evolution are tightly connected to galaxy evolution. The macroscopic properties of the interstellar medium propagate into the properties of GMCs condensing out of it, with correlations between e.g. the galactic and GMC scale gas pressures, surface densities and volume densities. That way, the galactic environment sets the initial conditions for star formation within GMCs. After the onset of massive star formation, stellar feedback from e.g. photoionisation, stellar winds, and supernovae eventually contributes to dispersing the parent cloud, depositing energy, momentum and metals into the surrounding medium, thereby changing the properties of galaxies. This cycling of matter between gas and stars, governed by star formation and feedback, is therefore a major driver of galaxy evolution. Much of the recent debate has focused on the durations of the various evolutionary phases that constitute this cycle in galaxies, and what these can teach us about the physical mechanisms driving the cycle. We review results from observational, theoretical, and numerical work to build a dynamical picture of the evolutionary lifecycle of GMC evolution, star formation, and feedback in galaxies. Star formation is a multi-scale, multi-physics problem ranging from the size scale of molecular clouds (∼ 10 s pc) down to the size scales of dense prestellar cores (∼ 0.1 pc) that are the birth sites of stars. Several physical processes like turbulence, magnetic fields and stellar feedback, such as radiation pressure and outflows, are more or less important for different stellar masses and size scales. During the last decade a variety of technological and computing advances have transformed our understanding of star formation through the use of multi-wavelength observations, large scale observational surveys, and multi-physics multi-dimensional numerical simulations. Additionally, the use of synthetic observations of simulations have provided a useful tool to interpret observational data and evaluate the importance of various physical processes on different scales in star formation. Here, we review these recent advancements in both high- (M ≳ 8 M ⊙ ) and low-mass star formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
