1D metal-oxide nanotube (NT) structures have attracted considerable attention for applications in chemical sensors due to their high surface area and unique chemical and physical properties. Moreover, bimodal pores, i.e., meso- and macro-sized pores, which are formed on the shell of NTs, can further facilitate gas penetration into the sensing layers, leading to much improved sensing properties. However, thin-walled NTs with bimodal pore distribution have been rarely fabricated due to the limitations of synthetic methods. Here, Ostwald ripening-driven electrospinning combined with sacrificial templating route using polystyrene (PS) colloid and bioinspired protein is firstly proposed for producing both bi-modal pores and catalyst-loaded thin-walled SnO2 NTs. Homogeneous catalyst loading on porous SnO2 NTs is achieved by the protein cage that contains catalysts and PS colloids and protein shells are thermally decomposed during calcination of electrospun fibers, resulting in the creation of dual-sized pores on NTs. Pt catalyst decorated porous SnO2 NTs (Pt-PS_SnO2 NTs) show exceptionally high acetone gas response, superior selectivity against other interfering gases, and very low limit of detection (10 ppb) to simulated diabetic acetone molecules. More importantly, sensor arrays assembled with developed porous SnO2 NTs enable the direct distinction between the simulated diabetic breath and normal breath from healthy people. Porous and hollow nanostructures functionalized with nanoscopic catalysts have attracted considerable interest in a wide range of applications depending on surface reactions. In this study, we present an efficient and versatile synthetic strategy of porous metal oxide hollow frameworks (HFs) decorated with noble metal nanoparticles (NPs). The key lies in the use of porous and bicontinuous polystyrene- block -poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS- b -P4VP) microparticles as templates, which feature pores on the order of several hundred nanometers in size. Homogeneous Pt loading on the surface of the porous microparticles is achieved through the preferential adsorption of Pt precursors onto the P4VP block via electrostatic interactions. Subsequent SnO 2 thin film deposition and calcination ultimately yield honeycomb-like SnO 2 HFs with macropores and uniform distribution of Pt NPs. The Pt NP-loaded SnO 2 HFs exhibit exceptional formaldehyde (HCHO) sensing capabilities, characterized by remarkable sensitivity (31.4 at 5 ppm), rapid response time (4.7 s at 5 ppm), ultra-low detection limit of 10 ppb, and remarkable cross-selectivity. These outstanding features result from their high surface area, gas permeability within porous hollow structures, and well-dispersed Pt NPs, which catalytically activate the sensor. Careful modulation of surficial and interfacial properties of electrode materials is a critical factor for determining overall electrochemical characteristics. Recent studies have indicated that metal oxide nanocoating layer (such as titanium (IV) oxide (TiO 2 )) on metal oxide anodes (such as tin (IV) oxide (SnO 2 )) exhibited superior electrochemical properties, but fundamental research on the effect and role of TiO 2 layer thickness has been limited. Here we have successfully conducted in-depth study on how the thickness of TiO 2 overlayer on SnO 2 can have significant influence in the overall parameters of electrochemistry. It is revealed that TiO 2 overlayer with 12 nm shows good cycle retention (75.8%) even after 80 cycles and retains capacity of 438.3 mAh g −1 even at high current density (5000 mA g −1 ). Surprisingly, it was further discovered that TiO 2 layer not only alleviates the volume expansion but also helps to facilitate Li ion transport compared with SnO 2 . The improvements in both ionic and electrical conductivity of TiO 2 layer are main factors in better cycle retention and rate capabilities. Finally, in situ transmission electron microscopy analysis was adopted to observe the growth dynamics of solid electrolyte interphase layer on TiO 2 @SnO 2 , which demonstrates that TiO 2 overlayer results in homogeneous and thinner interphase layer compared with SnO 2 NTs. Abstract: Chemoresistive H2S sensors using various oxide nanoparticles were prepared and heat-treated at 600°C in an effort to define halitosis in human breath. WO3, ZnO, and SnO2 were tested as sensing materials, among which WO3 showed the highest stability to H2S. XPS analysis showed a metal sulfate peak on the surface of ZnO and SnO2, which causes a recovery problem after 2ppm H2S exposure. On the contrary, the WO3 sensor showed a stable signal in long-term operation in the presence of H2S gas. WO3 gas sensors decorated with various catalytic metals were fabricated to investigate their sensing properties in the 0.2–5ppm H2S range with 80% relative humidity (RH). A 0.03wt% Au-doped WO3 sensor exhibited excellent H2S sensitivity (R air/R gas =12.40at 2ppm) toward H2S, whereas pure WO3 showed a sensitivity of 4.85 with negligible interference from the volatile organic compounds (VOCs). We report on facile synthesis of SnO2 nanofibers (NFs) functionalized by Pt nanoparticles (NPs) with various loading contents (0.05–0.4wt%) and their gas response toward H2, NO2, NH3, CO, and SO2 gases as a function of the operation temperature (100–450°C) and gas concentration (0.125–2.5ppm). Mesoporous SnO2 NFs with large surface-to-volume ratio, which facilitates sensitive gas response, were synthesized by electrospinning followed by subsequent calcination at 500°C for 2h. Colloidal Pt NPs synthesized by simple polyol method were immobilized on SnO2 NFs as a catalytic sensitizer to H2 oxidation. The gas sensing properties and response kinetics were significantly affected by the Pt NPs and the operation temperature. It was found that 0.1wt% Pt-loaded SnO2 sensor showed the highest H2 response (I gas/I air =16.6 at 2.5ppm) at 300°C. A remarkably high NO2 response (I air/I gas =57.0 at 2.5ppm) was achieved in the case of pristine SnO2 sensor at 150°C. This work demonstrates that sensitive and selective detection of H2 and NO2 gases with negligible cross-response to interfering gases such as NH3, CO, and SO2 can be obtained by decoration with Pt NPs on metal oxide NFs in conjunction with manipulation of the operation temperature. Abstract: SnO2 hollow nanofibers (HNFs) with diameters of 300–500nm were fabricated via electrospinning of templating nanofibers and RF-sputtering of SnO2 thin overlayers (15–20nm thick and comparable grain size) followed by heat-treatment at 450°C. Gas sensors using these HNFs exhibited n-type gas sensing characteristics and an enhanced gas response to 2ppm NO2 (R gas /R air =81.4) as compared to that (R gas /R air =19.9) of planar SnO2 thin films. The enhanced response to NO2 is attributed to the greater accessible active area and the greater space charge modulation depth associated with the hollow thin walled structures.
