Surface soil moisture is an important parameter in hydrology and climate investigations. Current and future satellite missions with L-band passive microwave radiometers can provide valuable information for monitoring the global soil moisture. A factor that can play a significant role in the modeling and inversion of microwave emission from land surfaces is the surface roughness. In this study, an L-band parametric emission model for exponentially correlated surfaces was developed and implemented in a soil moisture retrieval algorithm. The approach was based on the parameterization of an effective roughness parameter of H p in relation with the geometric roughness variables (root mean square height s and correlation length l ) and incidence angle. The parameterization was developed based on a large set of simulations using an analytical approach incorporated in the advanced integral equation model (AIEM) over a wide range of geophysical properties. It was found that the effective roughness parameter decreases as surface roughness increases, but increases as incidence angle increases. In contrast to previous research, H p was found to be expressed as a function of a defined slope parameter m = s 2 / l , and coefficients of the function could be well described by a quadratic equation. The parametric model was then tested with L-band satellite data in soil moisture retrieval algorithm over the Little Washita watershed, which resulted in an unbiased root mean square error of about 0.03 m 3 /m 3 and 0.04 m 3 /m 3 for ascending and descending orbits, respectively. Abstract: In this work, an algorithm for automatic subpixel snow mapping was developed for Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. The algorithm consists of two parts: cloud removal and snow mapping. An approach to remove cloud was presented and it was demonstrated to remove thick and thin clouds well from MODIS images. Multiple-endmember spectral mixture analysis was used in the subpixel snow mapping of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, and multiple indices (including the normalized difference vegetation index and normalized difference snow index) were introduced to automatically select the endmembers. Additionally, the combined use of typical and neighboring endmembers was introduced into the unmixing of mixed pixels. Finally, highly accurate snow-cover data of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau obtained with this algorithm were stored in a spatio-temporal database. The results of the subpixel snow mapping were validated with Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) data recorded at the same time as corresponding MODIS data. According to the validation results, the correlation coefficients of the MODIS results versus the ASTER data exceed 0.9, and the root-mean-square errors are less than 0.2. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

High temporal resolution and spatially complete (seamless) land surface temperature (LST) play a crucial role in numerous geoscientific aspects. This paper proposes a data fusion method for producing hourly seamless LST from Himawari-8 Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) data. First, the high-quality hourly clear-sky LST was retrieved from AHI data by an improved temperature and emissivity separation algorithm; then, the hourly spatially complete China Land Data Assimilation System (CLDAS) LST was calibrated by a bias correction method. Finally, the strengths of the retrieved AHI LST and bias-corrected CLDAS LST were combined by the multiresolution Kalman filter (MKF) algorithm to generate hourly seamless LST at different spatial scales. Validation results showed the bias and root mean square error (RMSE) of the fused LST at a finer scale (0.02°) were −0.65 K and 3.38 K under cloudy sky conditions, the values were −0.55 K and 3.03 K for all sky conditions, respectively. The bias and RMSE of the fused LST at the coarse scale (0.06°) are −0.46 K and 3.11 K, respectively. This accuracy is comparable to the accuracy of all-weather LST derived by various methods reported in the published literature. In addition, we obtained the consistent LST images across different scales. The seamless finer LST data over East Asia can not only reflect the spatial distribution characteristics of LST during different seasons, but also exactly present the diurnal variation of the LST. With the proposed method, we have produced a 0.02° seamless LST dataset from 2016 through 2021 that is freely available at the National Tibetan Plateau Data Center. Accurate long-term daily cloud-gap-filled fractional snow cover products are essential for climate change and snow hydrological studies in the Asian Water Tower (AWT) region, but existing Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) snow cover products are not sufficient. In this study, the multiple-endmember spectral mixture analysis algorithm based on automatic endmember extraction (MESMA-AGE) and the multistep spatiotemporal interpolation algorithm (MSTI) are used to produce the MODIS daily cloud-gap-filled fractional snow cover product over the AWT region (AWT MODIS FSC). The AWT MODIS FSC products have a spatial resolution of 0.005° and span from 2000 to 2022. The 2745 scenes of Landsat-8 images are used for the areal-scale accuracy assessment. The fractional snow cover accuracy metrics, including the coefficient of determination (R2), root mean squared error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE), are 0.80, 0.16 and 0.10, respectively. The binarized identification accuracy metrics, including overall accuracy (OA), producer's accuracy (PA) and user's accuracy (UA), are 95.17 %, 97.34 % and 97.59 %, respectively. Snow depth data observed at 175 meteorological stations are used to evaluate accuracy at the point scale, yielding the following accuracy metrics: an OA of 93.26 %, a PA of 84.41 %, a UA of 82.14 % and a Cohen kappa (CK) value of 0.79. Snow depth observations from meteorological stations are also used to assess the fractional snow cover resulting from different weather conditions, with an OA of 95.36 % (88.96 %), a PA of 87.75 % (82.26 %), a UA of 86.86 % (78.86 %) and a CK of 0.84 (0.72) under the MODIS clear-sky observations (spatiotemporal reconstruction based on the MSTI algorithm). The AWT MODIS FSC product can provide quantitative spatial distribution information on snowpacks for mountain hydrological models, land surface models and numerical weather prediction in the Asian Water Tower region. This article presents a comprehensive subpixel water mapping algorithm to automatically produce routinely open water fraction maps in the Tibetan Plateau (TP) with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). A multi-index threshold endmember extraction method was applied to select the endmembers from MODIS images. To incorporate endmember variability, an endmember selection strategy, called the combined use of typical and neighboring endmembers, was adopted in multiple endmember spectral mixture analysis (MESMA), which can assure a robust subpixel water fractions estimation. The accuracy of the algorithm was assessed at both the local scale and regional scale. At the local scale, a comparison using the eight pairs of MODIS/Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) water maps demonstrated that subpixels water fractions were well retrieved with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 7.86% and determination coefficient (R2) of 0.98. At the regional scale, the MODIS water fraction map in October 2014 matches well with the TP lake data set and the Global Lake and Wetland Database (GLWD) in both latitudinal and longitudinal distribution. Soil moisture is an important variable in agricultural and hydrological applications. Sentinel-1 (A/B) satellite provides high-resolution (∼10 m) synthetic aperture radar data, and its high revisit capability (6 days at the equator) with multi-track data provides great potential for global soil moisture monitoring. In this study, an algorithm was proposed for soil moisture retrieval using the Multi-Temporal Dual-Channel (MTDC) Sentinel-1 data. The MTDC algorithm first conducted an incidence angle normalization method based on time series data to normalize backscattering coefficients from multiple tracks. Subsequently, using the vegetation water content obtained through a vegetation index climatology, soil roughness and soil unfrozen water content could be estimated for the freezing period (unfrozen water content in the soil is assumed to be stable for January and December). The changes in total backscatter between successive observations were expressed as a function of the two-way vegetation transmissivity multiplied by the difference between soil backscatter, which was directly related to the changes in soil moisture. Considering the retrieved soil roughness as a constant for the entire year, and the average unfrozen water content as the initial soil moisture, the changes in and absolute values of soil moisture for each observation can be estimated by minimizing a cost function between the modeled and observed changes in total backscatter. Retrieval results were validated against the soil moisture network in a semi-arid watershed of Shandian River with an unbiased Root Mean Square Error (ubRMSE) of 0.06 cm3·cm−3, and a bias of −0.04 cm3·cm−3. With the initial soil moisture from in-situ measurements, a higher accuracy was achieved for the MTDC algorithm (ubRMSE = 0.06 cm3·cm−3; bias = −0.01 cm3·cm−3). Further, comparisons with Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) enhanced products further verified the efficacy of the proposed algorithm (ubRMSE = 0.03 cm3·cm−3; bias = −0.004 cm3·cm−3), and demonstrated the feasibility of operational soil moisture products using the Sentinel-1 radar dataset. • A multi-temporal dual-channel algorithm is proposed for soil moisture retrieval. • The incidence angle normalization enables the use of Sentinel-1 multi-track data. • Soil roughness and soil unfrozen water content are initially retrieved for frozen period. • Sentinel-1 can map 1-km soil moisture effectively at a local to regional scale. Snow depth estimation with passive microwave (PM) remote sensing is challenged by spatial variations in the Earth's surface, e.g., snow metamorphism, land cover types, and topography. Thus, traditional static snow depth retrieval algorithms cannot capture snow thickness well. In this study, we present a new operational retrieval algorithm, hereafter referred to as the pixel-based method (0.25° × 0.25° grid-level), to provide more accurate and nearly real-time snow depth estimates. First, the reference snow depth was retrieved using a previously proposed model in which a microwave snow emission model was coupled with a machine learning (ML) approach. In this process, an effective grain size (effGS) value was optimized by utilizing the snow microwave emission model, and then the nonlinear relationship between snow depth and multiple predictive variables, e.g., effGS, longitude, elevation, and brightness temperature (Tb) gradients, was established with the ML technique to retrieve reference snow depth data. To select a robust and well-performing ML approach, we compared the performance of widely used support vector regression (SVR), artificial neural network (ANN) and random forest (RF) algorithms over China. The results show that the three ML models performed similarly in snow depth estimation, which was attributed to the inclusion of effGS in the training samples. In this study, the RF model was used to retrieve the snow depth reference dataset due to its slightly stronger robustness according to our comparison of results. Second, the pixel-based algorithm was built based on the retrieved reference snow depth dataset and satellite Tb observations (18.7 GHz and 36.5 GHz) from Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) during the 2012–2020 period. For the pixel-based algorithm, the fitting coefficients were achieved dynamically pixel by pixel, making it superior to the traditional static methods. Third, the built pixel-based algorithm was verified using ground-based observations and was compared to the AMSR2, GlobSnow-v3.0, and ERA5-land products during the 2012–2020 period. The pixel-based algorithm exhibited an overall unbiased root mean square error (unRMSE) and R2 of 5.8 cm and 0.65, respectively, outperforming GlobSnow-v3.0, with unRMSE and R2 values of 9.2 cm and 0.22, AMSR2, with unRMSE and R2 values of 18.5 cm and 0.13, and ERA5-land, with unRMSE and R2 values of 10.5 cm and 0.33, respectively. However, the pixel-based algorithm estimates were still challenged by the complex terrain, e.g., the unRMSE was up to 17.4 cm near the Tien Shan Mountains. The proposed pixel-based algorithm in this study is a simple and operational method that can retrieve accurate snow depths based solely on spaceborne PM data in comparatively flat areas. Near-surface air temperature (Ta) is an important physical parameter that reflects climate change. Many methods are used to obtain the daily maximum (Tmax⁡), minimum (Tmin⁡), and average (Tavg) temperature, but are affected by multiple factors. To obtain daily Ta data (Tmax⁡ , Tmin⁡ , and Tavg) with high spatio-temporal resolution in China, we fully analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of various existing data. Different Ta reconstruction models were constructed for different weather conditions, and the data accuracy was improved by building correction equations for different regions. Finally, a dataset of daily temperature (Tmax⁡ , Tmin⁡ , and Tavg) in China from 1979 to 2018 was obtained with a spatial resolution of 0.1 ∘. For Tmax⁡ , validation using in situ data shows that the root mean square error (RMSE) ranges from 0.86 to 1.78 ∘ , the mean absolute error (MAE) varies from 0.63 to 1.40 ∘ , and the Pearson coefficient (R2) ranges from 0.96 to 0.99. For Tmin⁡ , the RMSE ranges from 0.78 to 2.09 ∘ , the MAE varies from 0.58 to 1.61 ∘ , and the R2 ranges from 0.95 to 0.99. For Tavg , the RMSE ranges from 0.35 to 1.00 ∘ , the MAE varies from 0.27 to 0.68 ∘ , and the R2 ranges from 0.99 to 1.00. Furthermore, various evaluation indicators were used to analyze the temporal and spatial variation trends of Ta , and the Tavg increase was more than 0.03 ∘ C yr -1 , which is consistent with the general global warming trend. In summary, this dataset has high spatial resolution and high accuracy, which compensates for the temperature values (Tmax⁡ , Tmin⁡ , and Tavg) previously missing at high spatial resolution and provides key parameters for the study of climate change, especially high-temperature drought and low-temperature chilling damage. Total precipitable water (TPW) is a key parameter in the study of water cycle and climate change. High-resolution TPW is critical for understanding regional water cycle processes. Besides, high-resolution TPW is also an important input parameter for atmospheric correction which helps to eliminate atmospheric impact and improve surface parameter retrieval accuracy. However, obtaining high-resolution TPW in all-weather condition from a single satellite sensor still has many limitations and challenges. This paper proposed a new fusion method to obtain all-weather TPW with a high spatial resolution of 0.05° × 0.05° by taking advantage of various water vapor related variables derived from microwave and near-infrared (NIR) remote sensing. At the same time, the contribution of variables in the fusion algorithm was analyzed to find the best fusion scheme. There are two major improvements in the newly developed fusion method. First, a new water vapor sensitive parameter – ratio of brightness temperature polarization difference between frequencies 89 and 36.5 GHz (∆ Tb 89 / ∆ Tb 36.5) was first introduced in the fusion algorithm to provide more high spatial resolution TPW information in both clear and cloudy sky conditions, and the accuracy of the fused TPW was significantly improved when the parameter ∆ Tb 89 / ∆ Tb 36.5 was introduced. Second, a two-steps fusion method was proposed to produce a fused high spatial resolution TPW by fully taking advantage of high quality TPW information from AMSR2 TPW and ∆ Tb 89 / ∆ Tb 36.5 in cloudy condition in the first step, and high quality TPW from MODIS in clear sky condition in the second step. The TPW derived from global navigation satellite system (GNSS) stations of Crustal Movement Observation Network of China (CMONOC) was used to validate the fused TPW and original TPW from MYD05 and AMSR2 at spatial resolution of 0.05° × 0.05°. According to the validation, the correlation coefficient, root mean square error, and relative root mean square error between the fused TPW and the GNSS TPW are 0.96, 4.23 mm and 23.67% respectively. The root mean square errors were improved by 19.96% and 27.32%, respectively, compared to the original MYD05 TPW and AMSR2 TPW. • A new two-step TPW fusion method was proposed based on MW and NIR remote sensing. • The influence of ∆Tb 89 /∆Tb 36.5 on fused TPW was analyzed in all weather conditions. • The fused TPW had a significant improvement compared to the original TPW datasets. Natural snow, one of the most important components of the cryosphere, is fundamentally a layered medium. In forward simulation and retrieval, a single-layer effective microstructure parameter is widely used to represent the emission of multiple-layer snowpacks. However, in most cases, this parameter is fitted instead of calculated based on a physical theory. The uncertainty under different frequencies, polarizations, and snow conditions is uncertain. In this study, we explored different methods to reduce the layered snow properties to a set of single-layer values that can reproduce the same brightness temperature (TB) signal. A validated microwave emission model of layered snowpack (MEMLS) was used as the modelling tool. Multiple-layer snow TB from the snow's surface was compared with the bulk TB of single-layer snow. The methods were tested using snow profile samples from the locally validated and global snow process model simulations, which follow the natural snow's characteristics. The results showed that there are two factors that play critical roles in the stability of the bulk TB error, the single-layer effective microstructure parameter, and the reflectivity at the air–snow and snow–soil boundaries. It is important to use the same boundary reflectivity as the multiple-layer snow case calculated using the snow density at the topmost and bottommost layers instead of the average density. Afterwards, a mass-weighted average snow microstructure parameter can be used to calculate the volume scattering coefficient at 10.65 to 23.8 GHz. At 36.5 and 89 GHz, the effective microstructure parameter needs to be retrieved based on the product of the snow layer transmissivity. For thick snow, a cut-off threshold of 1/e is suggested to be used to include only the surface layers within the microwave penetration depth. Passive microwave remote sensing technology has become an important means to quickly obtain soil moisture across large areas, but the coarse spatial resolution of microwave data imposes great limitations on the application of these data. We provide a unique soil moisture dataset (0.05 ∘ , monthly) for China from 2002 to 2018 based on reconstruction model-based downscaling techniques using soil moisture data from different passive microwave products – including AMSR-E and AMSR2 (Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for Earth Observing System) JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) Level 3 products and SMOS-IC (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity designed by the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique, INRA, and Centre d'Etudes Spatiales de la BIOsphère, CESBIO) products – calibrated with a consistent model in combination with ground observation data. This new fine-resolution soil moisture dataset with a high spatial resolution overcomes the multisource data time matching problem between optical and microwave data sources and eliminates the difference between the different sensor observation errors. The validation analysis indicates that the accuracy of the new dataset is satisfactory (bias: - 0.057, - 0.063 and - 0.027 m3m-3 ; unbiased root mean square error (ubRMSE): 0.056, 0.036 and 0.048; correlation coefficient (R): 0.84, 0.85 and 0.89 on monthly, seasonal and annual scales, respectively). The new dataset was used to analyze the spatiotemporal patterns of soil water content across China from 2002 to 2018. In the past 17 years, China's soil moisture has shown cyclical fluctuations and a slight downward trend and can be summarized as wet in the south and dry in the north, with increases in the west and decreases in the east. Land surface temperature (LST) is a key variable for high temperature and drought monitoring and climate and ecological environment research. Due to the sparse distribution of ground observation stations, thermal infrared remote sensing technology has become an important means of quickly obtaining ground temperature over large areas. However, there are many missing and low-quality values in satellite-based LST data because clouds cover more than 60 % of the global surface every day. This article presents a unique LST dataset with a monthly temporal resolution for China from 2003 to 2017 that makes full use of the advantages of MODIS data and meteorological station data to overcome the defects of cloud influence via a reconstruction model. We specifically describe the reconstruction model, which uses a combination of MODIS daily data, monthly data and meteorological station data to reconstruct the LST in areas with cloud coverage and for grid cells with elevated LST error, and the data performance is then further improved by establishing a regression analysis model. The validation indicates that the new LST dataset is highly consistent with in situ observations. For the six natural subregions with different climatic conditions in China, verification using ground observation data shows that the root mean square error (RMSE) ranges from 1.24 to 1.58 ∘ C, the mean absolute error (MAE) varies from 1.23 to 1.37 ∘ C and the Pearson coefficient (R2) ranges from 0.93 to 0.99. The new dataset adequately captures the spatiotemporal variations in LST at annual, seasonal and monthly scales. From 2003 to 2017, the overall annual mean LST in China showed a weak increase. Moreover, the positive trend was remarkably unevenly distributed across China. The most significant warming occurred in the central and western areas of the Inner Mongolia Plateau in the Northwest Region, and the average annual temperature change is greater than 0.1 K (R>0.71 , P<0.05), and a strong negative trend was observed in some parts of the Northeast Region and South China Region. Seasonally, there was significant warming in western China in winter, which was most pronounced in December. Currently, many algorithms are available to retrieve TPW from optical and microwave sensors. There are still no available TPW data over land from FY-3D MWRI, which was launched by China in 2017. However, the TPW product over land is a key element for the retrieval of many ecological environment parameters. In this paper, an improved algorithm was developed to retrieve TPW over land from the brightness temperature of FY-3D MWRI. The major improvement is that surface emissivity, which is a key parameter in the retrieval of TPW in all-weather conditions, was developed and based on an improved algorithm according to the characteristics of FY-3D MWRI. The improvement includes two aspects, one is selection of appropriate ancillary data in estimating surface emissivity parameter Δε18.7/Δε23.8 in clear sky conditions, and the other is an improvement of the Δε18.7/Δε23.8 estimation function in cloudy conditions according to the band configuration of FY-3D MWRI. Finally, TPW retrieved was validated using TPW observation from the SuomiNet GPS and global distributed Radiosonde Observations (RAOB) networks. According to the validation, TPW retrieved using observations from FY-3D MWRI and ancillary data from Aqua MODIS had the best quality. Soil moisture (SM) and vegetation optical depth (VOD) are essential variables in the terrestrial ecosystem. The multi-frequency radiometers AMSR-E and AMSR2 provide >20 years of data records, enabling the development of long-term SM and VOD products. Most of the current retrieval algorithms either only focus on SM or VOD, and generally ignore the polarization or simplify the frequency dependence of vegetation effects for reducing the unknowns and facilitating the retrieval process, limiting the synergic applicability of VOD and SM products in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. In this study, a new global SM and frequency- and polarization-dependent VOD product from 2002 to 2021 was developed using the multi-channel collaborative algorithm (MCCA), based on the inter-calibrated AMSR-E/2 multi-frequency passive microwave measurements. The MCCA algorithm comprehensively considers the physical relationship between multiple microwave channels and could retrieve frequency- and polarization-dependent VOD while considering the accuracy of the SM retrievals. In the overall comparison with other SM products (AMSR-ANN, CCI-passive v07.1, LPRM-C/X, JAXA) over 25 dense SM networks, MCCA achieved the best scores in terms of root mean square error (RMSE = 0.074 m3/m3), unbiased root mean square error (ubRMSE = 0.073 m3/m3) and bias (0.007 m3/m3), and presented slightly lower value of Pearson's correlation coefficient (R = 0.709) than LPRM-X (R = 0.735). For the indirect evaluation of VOD with aboveground biomass (AGB) and MODIS NDVI, the MCCA product showed the performance comparable to other products (LPRM-C/X, VODCA-C/X/Ku). MCCA-derived VODs, especially for the H-polarized VODs, exhibited smooth non-linear density distribution with AGB and high temporal correlations with MODIS NDVI over most regions of the globe. In particular, MCCA-derived VODs can physically present reasonable variations across the microwave spectrum (values of VOD increase with microwave frequency), which is superior to the LPRM and VODCA products. It is expected that the MCCA algorithm can be extended to the observations of the ongoing AMSR2 or other similar satellite missions with multi-frequency capability, such as FY-3B/C/D/F/G or the upcoming AMSR3 and CMIR missions. • A physically consistent SM product over two decades is developed using the MCCA. • MCCA-derived SM shows the best accuracy among the six AMSR SM products. • MCCA-derived VODs present reasonable variations across the microwave spectrum. • H-polarized VOD is more sensitive to vegetation in terms of biomass and greenness than V-polarized VOD. Satellite remote sensing of cloud property retrieval and shortwave downward radiation (SWDR) estimation is essential for global radiation budget and climate change studies. Sun glint areas remain a challenge for the existing cloud and SWDR algorithms based on the visible channel since surface specular reflection has a significant impact on satellite retrieval. In this study, a set of algorithms for cloud detection and cloud microphysical parameter estimation were developed using infrared multichannel data from the new generation geostationary satellite Himawari-8 based on the random forest method. The results indicated that the cloud retrieval algorithm exhibited better performance in the sun glint areas where the official Himawari-8 products (cloud detection and cloud optical thickness) were overestimated. We developed a new SWDR estimation algorithm combining the radiative transfer model and machine learning techniques by considering the cloud properties from the cloud retrieval algorithm. The results indicated that the SWDR and cloud radiative forcing derived by the new algorithm were more consistent with those of the well-known radiation products Cloud and the Earth's Radiant Energy System than those estimated using the official-based cloud product, with decreases in the root mean square error of approximately 22% and 41%, respectively. Long-term and high-quality surface soil moisture (SSM) and root-zone soil moisture (RZSM) data is crucial for understanding the land-atmosphere interactions of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). More than 40% of QTP is covered by permafrost, yet few studies have evaluated the accuracy of SSM and RZSM products derived from microwave satellite, land surface models (LSMs) and reanalysis over that region. This study tries to address this gap by evaluating a range of satellite and reanalysis estimates of SSM and RZSM in the thawed soil overlaying permafrost in the QTP, using in-situ measurements from sixteen stations. Here, seven SSM products were evaluated: Soil Moisture Active Passive L3 (SMAP-L3) and L4 (SMAP-L4), Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity in version IC (SMOS-IC), Land Parameter Retrieval Model (LPRM) Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2), European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative (ESA CCI), Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT), and the fifth generation of the land component of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts atmospheric reanalysis (ERA5-Land). We also evaluated three RZSM products from SMAP-L4, ERA5-Land, and the Noah land surface model driven by Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS-Noah). The assessment was conducted using five statistical metrics, i.e. Pearson correlation coefficient (R), bias, slope, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and unbiased RMSE (ubRMSE) between SSM or RZSM products and in-situ measurements. Our results showed that the ESA CCI, SMAP-L4 and SMOS-IC SSM products outperformed the other SSM products, indicated by higher correlation coefficients (R) (with a median R value of 0.63, 0.44 and 0.57, respectively) and lower ubRMSE (with a median ubRMSE value of 0.05, 0.04 and 0.07 m3/m3, respectively). Yet, SSM overestimation was found for all SSM products. This could be partly attributed to ancillary data used in the retrieval (e.g. overestimation of land surface temperature for SMAP-L3) and to the fact that the products (e.g. LPRM) more easily overestimate the in-situ SSM when the soil is very dry. As expected, SMAP-L3 SSM performed better in areas with sparse vegetation than with dense vegetation covers. For RZSM products, SMAP-L4 and GLDAS-Noah (R = 0.66 and 0.44, ubRMSE = 0.03 and 0.02 m3/m3, respectively) performed better than ERA5-Land (R = 0.46; ubRMSE = 0.03 m3/m3). Most algorithms for land surface temperature (LST) retrieval depend on acquiring prior knowledge. To overcome this drawback, we propose a novel LST retrieval method based on model-data-knowledge-driven and deep learning, called the MDK-DL method. Based on the expert knowledge and radiation transfer model, we deduce LST retrieval mechanism and determine the best combination of the thermal infrared (TIR) bands of the sensor. Then, we use the radiation transfer model simulation and reliable satellite-ground data to establish a training and test database, and finally use the deep learning neural network for optimal computation. Three typical high-, medium- and low-spatial-resolution TIR remote sensing datasets (from Gaofen, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and Fengyun) are used for theoretical simulation and application analysis. The simulation shows that the minimum mean absolute error (MAE) is less than 0.1 K (standard deviation: 0.04 K; correlation coefficient: 1.000) at a small viewing direction (<7.5°) and less than 0.8 K at a large viewing direction (<65°). The in situ validation shows that the minimum MAE obtained by the optimal band combination is approximately 1 K (root mean square error (RMSE) = 1.12 K; coefficient of determination (R2) = 0.902). The retrieval accuracy is improved by increasing the number of TIR bands in the atmospheric window, and adding accurate atmospheric water vapor information produces better results. In general, four TIR bands in the atmospheric window bands are sufficient to retrieve the LST with high accuracy. Likewise, three TIR bands plus atmospheric water vapor information are sufficient for the retrieval requirements. All analyses indicate that our method is feasible and reliably accurate and can also be used to help design the instrument band to retrieve the LST with high precision. In this study, we use an artificial neural network (ANN) method to estimate the downward surface shortwave radiation (DSSR) over China from Himawari-8 geostationary satellite data. As the training data of the DSSR estimation algorithm, ground-observed DSSR (GOS) data is compiled to complete the ANN method. GOS data from 89 stations over mainland China in 2016 are divided into training, testing and validation samples with a proportion of 3:1:1, in order to perform the DSSR estimation and accuracy validation. As a result, estimated DSSR from Himawari-8 data in 2016 shows good consistency with validation samples of ground observed DSSR, holding the determination coefficient and root mean square error of 0.90 and 88.86 W m−2 for the hourly mean DSSR, and 0.96 and 24.46 W m−2 for the daily mean DSSR, respectively. To investigate the spatio-temporal variation of daily DSSR in China, we performed the first empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis based on the ANN-derived DSSR estimates. The spatial pattern of the first EOF mode reveals a larger DSSR variation in northeast and northwest China, in contrast to the smallest variation appeared in the southwest. The hourly ANN-derived DSSR analysis shows a peak point at noon (local time) in each region, particularly in the Tibetan Plateau. In terms of the monthly and annual DSSR spatial distribution, the regions with higher elevations, such as Northwest, Tibetan Plateau and Inner Mongolia Plateau in China, have larger DSSR than other regions. Soil moisture is recognized as an Essential Climate Variable (ECV). Long term soil moisture data set could provide valuable information for climate change study. In this study, we developed a long term soil moisture data set by inputting AMSR-E and AMSR2 observations into an Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The surface soil moisture products of SMAP were set as the reference data, while brightness temperature (TB) of various channels and the microwave vegetation index (MVI) obtained or derived from AMSR2 were input into the ANN. The ANN system performs well during training period, with a correlation coefficient (CC) of 0.74 and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0.033 m3/m3. With this well-calibrated ANN system, we derived long term soil moisture (named as ANNsm) from AMSR2 and AMSR-E. With using the ground observation from the Soil Climate Analysis Network sites (named as SCANsm) as references, ANNsm was compared with the soil moisture product provided by JAXA, and that retrieved from the land parameter retrieval model (LPRM). The comparison demonstrates that ANNsm outperform the other two in both CC and RMSE.
