We describe polymerase chain reaction primers and amplification conditions for 13 microsatellite DNA loci isolated from two bisexual species of whiptail lizards Aspidoscelis costata huico and Aspidoscelis inornata. Primers were tested on either 16 or 48 individuals of A. c. huico and/or 26 individuals of A. inornata. Ten of the 13 primers were also tested against a panel of 31 additional whiptail taxa. We detected three to nine alleles per locus in A. c. huico and four to 19 alleles per locus in A. inornata, with observed heterozygosity ranging from 0.60 to 0.87 and from 0.15 to 1.00, respectively. We describe polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers and conditions to amplify eight dinucleotide, one trinucleotide and 14 tetranucleotide microsatellite DNA loci isolated from the northern bobwhite ( Colinus virginianus). The PCR primers were tested on 16 individuals collected from a population located within the Red Hills region of south Georgia and north Florida. The 23 primer pairs developed in this study yielded an average of 6.5 alleles per locus (range 2–11), an average observed heterozygosity of 0.47 (range 0.06–0.94) and average polymorphic information content of 0.60 (range 0.06–0.85). We isolated 11 polymorphic microsatellite loci for wood stork ( Mycteria americana). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers and conditions are described for the amplification of five dinucleotide, one trinucleotide and five tetranucleotide microsatellite loci. The PCR primers were tested on two wood stork populations, Fazenda Ipiranga, Mato Grosso, Brazil ( n = 11) and Tamiami West, Everglades, Florida, USA ( n = 20). The primers yielded two to four alleles per locus, an observed heterozygosity of 0.0-0.727 and a polymorphic information content of 0.048-0.604. We describe polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers and conditions to amplify 11 microsatellite DNA loci isolated from the oldfield mouse ( Peromyscus polionotus subgriseus). These were tested for amplification using nine species and subspecies maintained at the Peromyscus Genetic Stock Center, with an average success rate of 65% and two loci amplifying in all species. Polymorphism was tested within the P. polionotus subgriseus and the recently obtained P. maniculatus sonorensis colonies. P. p. subgriseus had modest numbers of alleles per locus (1-4), whereas P. m. sonorensis had many alleles per locus (5-10) and high expected heterozygosities (0.625-0.878). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We developed 11 novel microsatellite loci for Sprague's pipit (Anthus spragueii), a songbird endemic to the Northern Great Plains of central North America. These loci were screened in 21 individuals from southern Saskatchewan, Canada. All 11 loci were polymorphic, with the number of alleles per locus ranging from five to 23, polymorphic information content from 0.312 to 0.947, and observed heterozygosity from 0.476 to 0.900. We developed 15 polymorphic microsatellite loci from the Hawaiian tree Metrosideros polymorpha. These loci were screened against two varieties from several populations and from 23 individuals from one mid-elevation population on Hawaii Island. We have developed eight high-quality microsatellite DNA loci for the saltmarsh sharp-tailed sparrow and one additional locus with evidence of null alleles. In a sample of 250–350 individuals, the average number of alleles per locus was 14.7 and average observed heterozygosity was 0.80. We have developed primer pairs for 24 microsatellite loci isolated from Acacia brevispica, which is widespread in woodland savannas of East Africa. The loci were screened for levels of variation using 16-52 individuals from Mpala Research Centre, Kenya. Number of alleles per locus ranged from two to 17, and polymorphic information content ranged from 0.248 to 0.864. We describe polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers and amplification conditions for seven microsatellite DNA loci isolated from the red-spotted newt ( Notophthalmus viridescens). Primers were tested on 16 individuals from two populations on the Savannah River Site in Aiken County, South Carolina. We detected six to 10 alleles per locus and an overall observed heterozygosity range of 0.31-0.81. Despite low heterozygosity at two of the seven loci, the high polymorphic information contents (from 0.54 to 0.85) of these markers render them useful for future studies of the behavioural and population ecology of this common salamander.
