Abstract A hybrid cooling system aimed at enhancing energy, exergy and economic efficiency of data center is proposed. The proposed system combines a high cooling efficiency spray cooling system, a waste heat reusing absorption chiller and a peak load shifting chilled water storage. This combination is implemented by replacing the condenser of spray cooling system with the generator of absorption chiller, and storing cooling capacity of absorption chiller during off-peak time to supplement the cooling load during on-peak time. A thermodynamic model is developed based on energy and exergy balance. Parametric sensitivity analysis is performed to investigate the effects of spray cooling inlet temperature, chilled water temperature, cooling water temperature and ambient temperature on the energy saving efficiency, exergy efficiency and operation cost. Comparison study and economic analysis are conducted based on Dawning 5000A supercomputer in Shanghai, China. Sensitivity analysis results show that the effect of spray cooling inlet temperature is the largest, while the effects of chilled water temperature and cooling water temperature are the smallest. At appropriate condition, the absorption chiller and chilled water storage could totally eliminated the cooling load of air conditioner during on-peak time. The energy saving efficiency, exergy efficiency and operation cost saving could be up to 51%, 17%, and 71% with the cost payback period as low as 286 days. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• A novel open type I-CAES with hydraulic machine and spray cooling is proposed. • A transient thermodynamic model including air-water heat transfer is presented. • OI-CAES enables continuous energy storage and near isothermal compression. • Indicated efficiency of 98% and roundtrip efficiency of 76% are achieved. • Compression and expansion time ratio of 99% and 96% are obtained. Isothermal compressed air energy storage (I-CAES) is a high efficient emission-free technology to facilitate the integration of fluctuating renewable energy into the power grid. However, in conventional closed type I-CAES (CI-CAES), the volumetric energy storage density is very low since two working mediums exist (water and air) and the water storage tank doubles the system volume. Thus, an open type I-CAES (OI-CAES) is proposed to solve this problem. Based on reversible hydraulic pump/turbine, the proposed system could achieve continuous energy storage/release and increase the compression/expansion time ratio, thus increasing the volumetric energy storage density. Combined with spray cooling, OI-CAES system could achieve near isothermal compression/expansion and improve the energy storage efficiency. A transient mathematical model is established based on thermodynamic laws and heat transfer theory. Thermodynamic analyses including a single cycle analysis and a continuous cycle analysis are carried out. A comprehensive performance assessment of the proposed systems is conducted and the effect of spray flow rate is analyzed. The results show that the compression time ratio during energy storage and the expansion time ratio during energy release are increased to 99.2% and 95.6% respectively. The energy storage density is doubled compared to CI-CAES at the same working pressure. The nearly isothermal compression/expansion is achieved with air temperature change as low as 5 °C. Methods to avoid the dynamic Leidenfrost effect are of great importance for high heat flux spray cooling which needs an efficient contact of liquid and superheated surface. In this paper, a novel method of increasing dynamic Leidenfrost temperature is proposed through addition of high-alcohol surfactant (HAS). Effects of 1-Octanol and 2-ethyl-hexanol surfactants on dynamic Leidenfrost temperature and spreading dynamic of droplets impacting on superheated surface were investigated for the first time using high-speed photography. Empirical correlations of dynamic Leidenfrost temperature and maximum spreading factor were obtained based on our experimental data. A possible explanation for the dynamic Leidenfrost temperature increase caused by HAS was proposed based on bubble bursting and bubble coalescence. The results show that dynamic Leidenfrost temperature is significantly increased by addition of HAS because of surface tension reduction. The empirical correlations of dynamic Leidenfrost temperature and maximum spreading factor show good agreement with maximum error of 5% and 10% respectively. Piezoelectric atomizer could enhance heat transfer of spray cooling at low flow rate through improved atomization of liquid droplets. To optimize the heat transfer performance of piezoelectric atomizer based spray cooling, a novel piezoelectric atomizer was designed in this paper. The piezoelectric atomizer was composed of two piezoelectric ceramic films (110 kHz) and a stainless steel micropore disk with different outlet diameters of 5 μm, 7 μm, 9 μm, 20 μm and 25 μm (corresponding flow rates of 0.5 mL/min, 1.0 mL/min, 3.8–5.0 mL/min, 11.0–16.0 mL/min and 20.0–29.0 mL/min, respectively). The effects of micropore outlet diameter, volumetric flow rate and spray height on surface temperature distribution, heat flux and the spray cooling efficiency were studied. It was found that the volumetric flow rate increased with the increase of micropore outlet diameter. As the flow rate increased, the heat flux increased but the spray cooling efficiency decreased as a sacrifice. The correlation between spray cooling efficiency/heat flux and flow rate (range from 0.5 mL/min to 29.0 mL/min) of all atomizers could be generalized into one exponential decay/growth curve. An optimal diameter of 9 μm could achieve high heat flux of 123.8 W/cm 2 at a relatively low volumetric flow rate of 5.0 mL/min, and the corresponding spray cooling efficiency was as high as 53.8%. To improve the energy efficiency of supercomputer center, a novel energy system aimed at enhancing cooling efficiency while reusing waste heat is proposed. The energy system integrates a plug-type spray cooling system with a two-stage absorption chiller driven by spray cooling waste heat. Overall modeling of integrated energy system is analyzed based on spray cooling model and absorption chiller model. Energy saving evaluation is conducted based on Dawning 5000A supercomputer in China. It is found that the novel energy system is much efficient than the original energy system in all seasons. The energy saving effect is highly affected by inlet temperature of spray cooling. With the increase of inlet temperature, the spray cooling capacity decreases while the absorption cooling capacity increases. Thus, an optimal inlet temperature of 55 °C is obtained at which the lowest cooling power consumption, lowest power utilization effectiveness (PUE) and highest energy saving efficiency (ESE) can be achieved. Taken Dawning 5000A supercomputer for example, the system can achieve ESE as high as 49% and PUE within best practice scenario of 1.44. At the optimal design, cooling power consumption only accounts for 16%. Power consumption devoted to running the IT equipment is improved from 60% to 67%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
