ESA’s ExoMars program comprises two missions including the Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO), launched in 2016, and a rover and surface platform, to be launched in 2022. The main scientific objectives of the program are to investigate the Martian environment and climate and search for past or present signs of life. For this purpose, a suite of three infrared spectrometers for remote sensing (Atmospheric Chemistry Suite, ACS) is in use on TGO. One of these instruments is a Fourier transform spectrometer, TIRVIM (Thermal IR V-shape Interferometer Mounting in honor of Vassili Ivanovich Moroz), operating in nadir, limb or solar occultation mode between 1.7 and 17 μm. On ExoMars22’s surface platform the spectrometer FAST (Fourier for Atmospheric Species and Temperature) will study the atmosphere and surface at the landing site in the same wavelength range as TIRVIM on TGO. This paper presents the objectives of TIRVIM and FAST. It summarizes selected results of the determination of temperature profiles and dust content in the lower atmosphere of Mars based on radiative transfer modeling of TIRVIM data. Synergetic analyses of TIRVIM spectra and InSight (NASA) in situ measurements of temperature and pressure at InSight’s landing site in Elysium Planitia enable improvements of procedures to retrieve parameters from TIRVIM observations. First results on surface temperature obtained from these different data sets together with the measurements to be expected in the future from FAST offer a unique opportunity to compare in situ and IR remote sensing measurements.

Infrared Fourier-transform spectrometers (FTIR) onboard of the planetary missions are commonly used for the thermal sounding of the atmosphere and retrieval of aerosol profiles. To derive a calibrated spectrum of the target source, one needs three separate measurements: the target source itself and two calibration measurements of sources with known emissivity and temperature. An overview of the design of a compact in-built calibration source (a blackbody) emitting at 210-330 K for a spaceborne FTIR instrument is presented. Mechanically it is an aluminum structure matching the aperture of the instrument. The emissivity depends on its surface relief and finish. Four different types of surface shape are considered. The best-achieved emissivity is better than 0.99 (at 15 μm). The optimal placement of heaters allowing for minimal thermal non-uniformity (0.1 K) across the aperture is found. The accuracy of the thermal control is also ~0.1 K. We discuss the thermal control system and its characteristics (accuracy and drift). The proposed design accounts for a minimum mass applicable to the space instrumentation. For a one-inch aperture, the mass is 0.12 kg. The expected accuracy of the instrument calibrated with the designed blackbody is estimated.

The Planetary Spectroscopy Laboratory (PSL) of DLR in Berlin provides spectral measurements of primarily planetary analogues from the visible to the far-infrared range. PSL has supported the data analysis as well as the development and calibration of instruments for planetary missions from ESA, NASA and JAXA. For this purposes PSL provides reflection, transmission and emission spectroscopy of target materials. Currently PSL operates three identical Bruker Vertex 80V vacuum FTIR spectrometer (the third one just installed in June 2019), two spectrometers are equipped with aluminum mirrors optimized for the UV, visible and near-IR, the third features gold-coated mirrors for the near to far IR spectral range. External simulation chambers are attached to two of the instruments for emissivity measurements. The chamber at the near to far IR instrument allows emissivity measurements from 0.7-200 micron under vacuum for sample temperatures from 320K to above 900K, using an innovative induction system. The MErcury Radiometer and Thermal Infrared Spectrometer (MERTIS) is an instrument to study the mineralogy and temperature distribution of Mercury’s surface in unprecedented detail. MERTIS was proposed in 2003 as payload of the Mercury Planetary Orbiter spacecraft of ESA-JAXA BepiColombo mission and will reach Mercury in 2025. MERTIS will map the whole surface at 500 m scale, combining a push-broom IR grating spectrometer (TIS) with a radiometer (TIR) sharing the same optics, instrument electronics and in-flight calibration components for the whole wavelength range of 7- 14μm (TIS) and 7-40μm (TIR). MERTIS successfully completed its planned tests of the Near-Earth Commissioning Phase (NECP) between 13 and 14 November, collecting thousands of measurements of its internal calibration bodies and deep space. The data collected during NECP, are being used to verify the operational performances of onboard sub-modules, in particular the spectrometer and radiometer sensor sensitivity. A preliminary look at calibrated data shows a performance comparable with ground-based measurements and no appreciable performance loss or misalignment. The next important dates for MERTIS are the Earth/Moon flyby on 6 April 2020 and the first Venus flyby on 12 October 2020. Both those encounters will be important both for further instrument calibration refinement and for possible unprecedented measurement in the thermal infrared of the Moon and Venus.

An interferometer is an essential subsystem of the Fourier-transform spectrometer (FTS). We describe an FTS instrument to operate at the surface of Mars based on a Michelson interferometer with hollow retroreflectors. The instrument will operate in two different regimes, observing the solar disc through the atmosphere to measure trace gases, and measuring the thermal emission from the atmosphere to study the planetary boundary layer (PBL). The interferometer has an aperture of 1 inch, operates in the spectral range 1.7-17 μm, and features low mass and volume (≤1 kg with all necessary subsystems). Beam splitter and compensator are made of potassium bromide (KBr). A single-axis robot with stepper motor drive provides a linear movement of the retroreflector (the speed stability is about 2%) and enables a maximal optical path difference (MOPD) of 15 cm. A reference channel with a distributed-feedback laser diode (0.76 μm) and a photodiode (Si) supports the interferogram sampling and the speed stabilization loop. The time to measure one interferogram with a best spectral resolution of about 0.05 cm–1 is 500 s (the sun tracking regime). In the thermal sounding regime, one measurement of a two-side interferogram (with the spectral resolution of ~1 cm–1) takes less than 1 min. Laboratory calibrations with a black body and a laser confirm the design parameters of the instrument.

TROTIS (TROjan asteroid Thermal Infrared multi-Spectral imager) is a high spatial-resolution thermal imaging system optimized for targets in the outer solar system with heritage from the Miniaturized Asteroid thermal infrared Imager and Radiometer (MAIR) for the AIDA mission as well as Bepi-Colombo mission’s MErcury Radiometer and Thermal Infrared Spectrometer (MERTIS). TROTIS will provide unique science observations that will foster our understanding of Trojan asteroids. It will provide compositional information, thermal physical properties as well as help determine accurate shapes. In addition TROTIS can aid optical navigation, as it will be able to detect targets from any phase angle.

Venus׳ surface emissivity data in the infrared can serve to explore the planet׳s geology. The only global data with high spectral, spatial, and temporal resolution and coverage at present is supplied by nightside emission measurements acquired by the Visible and InfraRed Thermal Imaging Spectrometer VIRTIS-M-IR ( 1.0 – 5.1 μ m ) aboard ESA׳s Venus Express. A radiative transfer simulation and a retrieval algorithm can be used to determine surface emissivity in the nightside spectral transparency windows located at 1.02, 1.10, and 1.18 μ m . To obtain satisfactory fits to measured spectra, the retrieval pipeline also determines auxiliary parameters describing cloud properties from a certain spectral range. But spectral information content is limited, and emissivity is difficult to retrieve due to strong interferences from other parameters. Based on a selection of representative synthetic VIRTIS-M-IR spectra in the range 1.0 – 2.3 μ m , this paper investigates emissivity retrieval errors that can be caused by interferences of atmospheric and surface parameters, by measurement noise, and by a priori data, and which retrieval pipeline leads to minimal errors. Retrieval of emissivity from a single spectrum is shown to fail due to extremely large errors, although the fits to the reference spectra are very good. Neglecting geologic activity, it is suggested to apply a multi-spectrum retrieval technique to retrieve emissivity relative to an initial value as a parameter that is common to several measured spectra that cover the same surface bin. Retrieved emissivity maps of targets with limited extension (a few thousand km) are then additively renormalized to remove spatially large scale deviations from the true emissivity map that are due to spatially slowly varying interfering parameters. Corresponding multi-spectrum retrieval errors are estimated by a statistical scaling of the single-spectrum retrieval errors and are listed for 25 measurement repetitions. For the best of the studied retrieval pipelines, temporally varying interfering atmospheric parameters (cloud parameters, minor gas abundances) contribute errors in the order of 3%–10% of the true emissivity, depending on the surface window, the reference spectrum, and assuming statistical independence of the parameters. Temporally constant interfering parameters that spatially vary on a scale of 100 km (surface elevation, interfering emissivities) add 9%–16%. Measurement noise with a standard deviation of 10 − 4 W / ( m 2 sr μ m ) leads to additional 1%–4%. Reasonable modifications of a priori mean values have negligible impacts. Retrieved maps are most reliable at 1.02 μ m . There is an overall tendency for better results for cases with small cloud opacity, high surface elevation, high emissivity, and small observation angle, but this depends on the emissivity window, retrieval pipeline, and measurement repetition number. Calibration, preprocessing, and simulation errors can lead to additional errors. Based on the presented results, a subsequent paper will discuss emissivity data retrieval for a selected surface target.

Atmospheric Chemistry Suite (ACS) is a part of Russian contribution to ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) ESA-Roscosmos mission. ACS includes three separate infrared spectrometers (MIR, NIR and TIRVIM) with a different spectral coverage and targeted to the different science goals. ACS TIRVIM is a Fourier-transform spectrometer based on 2-inch double pendulum interferometer. It operates in the spectral range of 1.7-7 μm with the best spectral resolution 0.13 cm-1 for solar occultation (SO) mode and 0.8 cm-1 for nadir mode. In nadir mode TIRVIM is purposed to thermal sounding of the Martian atmosphere and aerosol properties retrieval. In SO mode TIRVIM is dedicated to trace gases measurements complementing to ACS MIR. After successful launch of ExoMars TGO on 16 April 2016 there were three time slots for turning on science instruments during cruise phase to execute necessary checks and calibration measurements. In March 2018 the nominal science orbit was reached after cruise and aerobraking phases. The first results of TIRVIM data processing show high performance of the instrument.

Surface emissivity maps in the infrared can contribute to explore Venus’ geology. Nightside radiance spectra at Themis Regio acquired by the IR mapping channel of the Visible and InfraRed Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS-M-IR) aboard Venus EXpress (VEX) are used to derive emissivity data from the three accessible spectral surface windows at 1.02, 1.10, and 1.18 μm. The measured spectra are simulated by applying a full radiative transfer model. Neglecting geologic activity, a multi-spectrum retrieval algorithm is utilized to determine the emissivity maps of the surface target as parameter vectors that are common to many spectrally resolved images that cover this target. Absolute emissivity values are difficult to obtain due to strong interferences from other parameters. The true emissivity mean of the target cannot be retrieved, nor can the emissivity mean of a retrieved map be strictly preset. The retrieved map can exhibit trends with latitude and topography that are probably artificial. Once the trends have been removed in a post-processing step, it can be observed that the magnitude of the resulting spatial emissivity fluctuations around their mean value increases with increasing mean value. A linear transformation is applied that converts the de-trended map to exhibit a defined emissivity mean value called reference emissivity, here 0.5, yielding the ‘renormalized emissivity map’ with accordingly transformed fluctuations. It is verified that renormalized emissivity maps are largely independent of the emissivity mean before renormalization, of modifications to interfering atmospheric, surface, and instrumental parameters, and of selected details of the retrieval pipeline and data calibration and preprocessing. Extremely large emissivity retrieval errors due to imperfect or unconsidered forward model parameters are effectively avoided. If the absolute emissivity at a given bin of the target were known, the absolute emissivity map of the entire target could be computed according to the mentioned transformation, assuming absent true trends with latitude and topography. Until then, the renormalized emissivities are interpreted as spatial variations relative to the reference emissivity. They represent an important step toward the retrieval of absolute emissivities. Renormalized emissivity maps of Themis Regio at the three surface windows are determined from 64 measurement repetitions. Retrieval errors are estimated by a statistical evaluation of maps derived from various disjoint selections of spectra and using different assumptions on the interfering parameters. Double standard deviation errors for the three surface windows amount to 3%, 8%, and 4%, respectively, allowing geologic interpretation. A comparison to results from an earlier error analysis based on synthetic spectra shows that unconsidered time variations of interfering atmospheric parameters are a major error source. Spatial variations of the 1.02 μm surface emissivity of 20% that correspond to the difference between unweathered granitic and basaltic rocks would be easily detectable, but such variations are ruled out for the studied target area. Emissivity anomalies of up to 8% are detected at both 1.02 and 1.18 μm. At present sensitivity, no anomalies are identified at 1.10 μm, but anomalies exceeding the determined error level can be excluded. With single standard deviation significance, all three maps show interesting spatial emissivity variations.

After a cruise phase of more than ten years the Rosetta spacecraft entered orbit around comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (CG) on 6 August 2014. From this date the spacecraft began to escort the comet and will follow it till the end of the nominal mission (December 2015). This allowed very accurate nucleus imaging making 67P/CG the sixth comet to be directly observed from a spacecraft after 1P/Halley , 9P/Temple 1, 19P/Borrelly, 81P/Wild 2 and 103P/Hartley 2. The Rosetta orbiter carries eleven instruments and among these, VIRTIS, the Visible and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (Coradini et al. 2007). This experiment is composed of two sensor heads, -M (Mapper) and -H (High resolution). The -H sensor is a high resolution punctual spectrometer mainly devoted to the study of the coma properties in the 1.88-5.03 micrometers, while -M produces hyperspectral images of the target in the 0.2-5.1 micrometers range with an angular resolution of 250 micr-rad x 250 micro-rad. Data from VIRTIS-M are crucial to assess nucleus spectrophotometric properties: on global scale with disk-integrated observations and, thanks to its imaging capabilities, at larger spatial resolutions with disk-resolved measurements. The latter case is of paramount importance in order to map compositional variability on the surface and possibly link it to sources of activity. This work focuses on VIRTIS-M data acquired from July 2014 up to February 37 2015. The analysis we performed is divided into two main subjects: full-disk photometry (sec. 2) and disk-resolved photometry (sec. 3). In sec. 2, we discuss rotational curves (sec. 2.1), full-disk phase curves (sec. 2.2), color ratios (sec. 2.3) and the derivation of the geometric albedo (sec. 2.4). In sec. 3, taking advantage of the large dataset acquired by VIRTIS-M we calculate a photometric reduction by means of a Hapke simplified model thus assessing the spectrophotometric properties of the surface. Also a zonal photometric reduction has been derived for four macro-regions, in order to better investigate compositional and morphological differences on the nucleus (sec. 3.5). In sec. 4 the full-disk and the disk-resolved dataset are used together to derive a complete phase curve of the comet. Finally a comparison to photometric properties of other comets is shown in sec. 5 and in sec. 6 a summary of the main findings is reported as well as a discussion of future developments of this work with new observations in the coming months.

The extraction of surface emissivity data provides the data base for surface composition analyses and enables to evaluate Venus’ geology. The Visible and InfraRed Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS) aboard ESA’s Venus Express mission measured, inter alia, the nightside thermal emission of Venus in the near infrared atmospheric windows between 1.0 and 1.2 μm. These data can be used to determine information about surface properties on global scales. This requires a sophisticated approach to understand and consider the effects and interferences of different atmospheric and surface parameters influencing the retrieved values. In the present work, results of a new technique for retrieval of the 1.0 – 1.2 μm – surface emissivity are summarized. It includes a Multi-Window Retrieval Technique, a Multi-Spectrum Retrieval technique (MSR), and a detailed reliability analysis. The MWT bases on a detailed radiative transfer model making simultaneous use of information from different atmospheric windows of an individual spectrum. MSR regularizes the retrieval by incorporating available a priori mean values, standard deviations as well as spatial-temporal correlations of parameters to be retrieved. The capability of this method is shown for a selected surface target area. Implications for geologic investigations are discussed. Based on these results, the work draws conclusions for future Venus surface composition analyses on global scales using spectral remote sensing techniques. In that context, requirements for observational scenarios and instrumental performances are investigated, and recommendations are derived to optimize spectral measurements for Venus’ surface studies.

VIRTIS aboard ESA’s Rosetta mission is a complex imaging spectrometer that combines three unique data channels in one compact instrument to study nucleus and coma of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Two of the spectral channels are dedicated to spectral mapping (-M) at moderate spectral resolution in the range from 0.25 to 5.1 μm. The third channel is devoted to high resolution spectroscopy (-H) between 2 and 5 μm. The VIRTIS-H field of view is approximately centered in the middle of the -M image. The spectral sampling of VIRTIS-M is 1.8 nm/band below 1 μm and 9.7 nm/band between 1-5 μm, while for VIRTIS-H λ/Δλ= 1300-3000 in the 2-5 μm range. This paper describes selected findings during the pre-landing phase of Philae’s robotic subsystem and the comet’s escort phase as well as prospects of further observations. The preliminary results include studies of surface composition, coma analyses, and temperature retrieval for the nucleus surface-coma system demonstrating the capability of the instrument.

ROLIS (Rosetta Lander Imaging System) is one of the two imaging systems carried by Rosetta’s Lander Philae, successfully launched to comet 67P/ Churyumov-Gerasimenko in March 2004. Consisting of a highly-miniaturized CCD camera, ROLIS will operate as a descent imager, acquiring imagery of the landing site with increasing spatial resolution. After touchdown ROLIS will focus at an object distance of 30 cm, taking pictures of the comet’s surface below the Lander. Multispectral imaging is achieved through an illumination device consisting of four arrays of monochromatic light emitting diodes working in the 470, 530, 640 and 870 nm spectral bands. The drill sample sites, as well as the Alpha X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS) target locations will be imaged to provide context for the measurements performed by the in situ analyzers. After the drilling operation, the borehole will be inspected to study its morphology and to search for stratification. Taking advantage of the Lander’s rotation capability, stereo image pairs will be acquired, which will facilitate the mapping and identification of surface structures.

The Planetary Fourier Spectrometer PFS has been designed for the study of the atmosphere and soil of Mars. PFS has two infrared channels: a long wavelength (LW) channel with range 250 - 2000 cm-’ and a short wavelength (SW) channel with range 2000 - 8333 cm-‘. The spectral resolution is 2 cm-‘. Both channels work simultaneously. The field of view is 2” which covers 10 km on the Martian surface being observed from the pericenter at 300 km. The signal to noise ratio is better than 100 in a range of particular scientific interest (at 650 cm-’ , for example). The built-in pointing device allows to study the atmosphere over extreme regions like Hellas Planitia or Olympus Mons.

The MErcury Radiometer and Thermal infrared Imaging Spectrometer (MERTIS) is part of the payload of the Mercury Planetary Orbiter spacecraft of the ESA-JAXA BepiColombo mission. MERTIS’s scientific goals are to infer rockforming minerals, to map surface composition, and to study surface temperature variations on Mercury. To achieve these science goals MERTIS combines a imaging spectrometer covering the wavelength range from 7-14 microns with a radiometer covering the wavelength range from 7-40 microns. MERTIS will map the whole surface of Mercury with a spatial resolution of 500m for the spectrometer channel and 2km for the radiometer channel. The MERTIS instrument had been proposed long before the NASA MESSENGER mission provided us with new insights into the innermost of the terrestrial planets. The discoveries of the MESSENGER fundamentally changed our view of Mercury. It revealed a surface that has been reshaped by volcanism over large parts of geological history. Volatile elements like sulfur have been detected with unexpectedly high abundances of up to 4%. MESSENGER imagined structures that are most likely formed by pyroclastic eruptions in recent geologic history. Among the most exciting discoveries of MESSENGER are hollows – bright irregularly shaped depressions that show sign of ongoing loss of material. Despite all this new results the MERTIS dataset remains unique and is now more important than ever. None of the instruments on the NASA MESSENGER mission covers the same spectral range or provides a measurement of the surface temperature. The MERTIS will complement the results of MESSENGER. MERTIS will for example be able to provide spatially resolved compositional information on the hollows and pyroclastic deposits – both among the most exciting discoveries by the MESSENGER mission for which the NASA mission can not provide compositional information.

ESA’s mission BepiColombo will be launched in 2016. MERTIS (Mercury Radiometer and Thermal imaging Spectrometer) is one of the key instruments. MERTIS is an imaging infrared spectrometer and radiometer using an uncooled detector technology with very small resources in terms of mass and power. The incentive of the MERTIS development is scientific requirements to study the surface composition and temperatures of Mercury under the extreme environmental condition at Mercury. Therefore, the state-of-the-art optical performance of MERTIS is unique. Components based on innovative technologies have been developed and qualified to realize the project. This approach required an advanced model philosophy and development process from the study up to the flight model completed in 2013. This paper describes the development process as well as challenges from the management and system engineering point of view up to a lessons learnt that lead to important conclusions.

After six years in a polar Venus orbit, the visible and infrared thermal imaging spectrometer (VIRTIS) on ESA's Venus Express mission provided an enormous amount of new data, including a three-dimensional view of the atmosphere and information on global surface properties of the planet. An overview is given of selected scientific results achieved by use of VIRTIS data comprising atmospheric thermal structure, molecular and particulate composition, chemistry and dynamics, and surface features.

INEO is a program of four explorer flyby missions for imaging near-Earth objects by means of small spin stabilized spacecrafts. A low-cost approach is achieved by using existing hardware and available scientific instrumentation. For the first mission the payload consists of the flight space model of the Halley multicolour camera and three Munich dust counters. The imaging instrument will determine the physical properties of the target. The dust environment of the asteroid or comet will be investigated with the dust detectors. For the follow-on missions different cameras and spectrometers and a magnetometer are proposed. In this paper the outline of INEO is presented which will either be launched as an auxiliary passenger on large launch systems, like ARIANE IV, or as the main payload on medium sized launch vehicles, like TAURUS, M-3S-II or CZ-1D, without changing the configuration of the space probe. First results of mission analysis will be presented.

The Visible and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS) on Venus Express, after five years in a polar Venus orbit, provided an enormous amount of new data including a three-dimensional view of the atmosphere and information on global surface properties of the planet. VIRTIS is a complex imaging spectrometer that combines three unique data channels in one compact instrument. Two of the channels are committed to spectral mapping (VIRTIS-M) and a third one to high spectral resolution studies (VIRTIS-H). The paper gives an overview about the experimental goals and the instrument performance. It discusses some selected scientific results achieved by VIRTIS, among them thermal structure and properties of the lower, middle and upper atmosphere including dynamics, polar vortex, nightglows, and NLTE effects as well as surface features obtained from nightside emission measurements in the NIR atmospheric windows.

MERTIS (MErcury Radiometer and Thermal Infrared Spectrometer), scheduled for launch on board the Bepi Colombo Mercury Orbiter, will be the first mid-infrared imaging spectrometer to explore the innermost planet of the Solar System from orbit. The instrument is an advanced IR technology designed to study the surface composition, and surface temperature variations of planet Mercury. High resolution and global mid-IR spectral and temperature data obtained by MERTIS will contribute to a better understanding of Mercury's genesis and evolution. MERTIS uses an uncooled microbolometer detector array. It combines a push-broom IR grating spectrometer (TIS) with a radiometer (TIR) sharing the same optics, instrument electronics, and in-fight calibration components for a wavelength range of 7-14 and 7-40 μm, respectively. The paper summarizes the scientific objectives, observational goals, comparative laboratory spectral studies of mineral analogues, and introduces the technical overview and actual instrument development status of the experiment.

PFS is a two-channel Fourier spectrometer operating in the infra-red wavelengths between 1.25 and 45 μm. The instrument will be used mainly in the study of the Martian atmosphere. The principal goals are the measurements of the atmospheric temperature and pressure, atmospheric constituents, aerosol and clouds, ground pressure for surface topography, optical and thermophysics properties of the Martian soil. PFS will fly on the Mars 94 spacecraft which should be launched in 1994 and reach the planet in 1995. It is essentially constituted by two different interferometers located in the same box which is divided into two parts. A dichroic placed on the PFS entrance is used to separate the spectral range into two parts, a division needed by the different optical materials which have to be used in each spectral range. The optical layout of the experiment is very compact. Each channel uses two cubic mirrors mounted on an L-structure pivoted on a motor. The motor moves the mechanics and permits the optical-path difference between the arms to be varied. Each interformeter operates in a different spectral range, respectively, between (1.25÷4.8) μm (8000÷2083cm−1) and (6÷45)μm (1666÷220)cm−1). The spectral resolution is 2 cm−1. The entrance aperture area is 30 cm2 per channel and the field of view is 2 and 4 degrees. Every measurement lasts about 4 s. The time and, therefore, the relative optical-path difference for the measurement of every point of the interferogram is given by the zero crossings of the interferogram of a reference monochromatic channel at 1.2 μm which uses a laser diode as source. The two interferograms are double-sided and will have 16384 and 4096 points, respectively, corresponding to spectra of 6250 and 1823 useful points.

Fourier transform spectrometers have been used to obtain infrared emission spectra of solid planetary surfaces in the mid- and thermal-infrared region. This range is suitable for determining the mineralogical composition of the different planetary objects because even the highest-frequency fundamentals of silicates and other minerals appear in this region. However, the analysis of the emission spectra of solid surfaces is considerably complicated by the influence of morphological parameters on spectral behaviour. The surfaces of most of the airless planetary objects are covered with a regolith blanket. Particle size, grain shape, particle size distribution, the degree of covering and porosity of this fine-grained material strongly influence the thermal throughput and the spectral behaviour in the infrared. Laboratory emittance spectra of particulate minerals show that the spectral contrast of the fundamental vibration bands decreases with decreasing particle size. In the spectra of mineral powders with small grain sizes, weak overtone and combination tone bands instead of the vanishing fundamentals become increasingly important for the identification of minerals. Therefore, in the past infrared spectroscopy has been used rather sparingly for remote sensing. The chances for composition analysis of solid surfaces are discussed in relation to instrumental requirements for Fourier spectroscopy during planetary missions. An FT-IR spectrometer with its throughput and multiplex advantage is proposed for the spectroscopic sounding of the planetary surfaces. Moreover, the rotating reflector interferometer (RRI) is especially well adapted for space missions. It uses two retroreflectors in full aperture, integrated into a rotational device. The retroreflectors move along a circular path for some degrees, tailored to give medium resolution (0.5–5 cm −1 ) typical for space missions. Moreover, the RRI is suitable for lightweight, rugged and compact construction, which has minimum sensitivity to vibrations and shocks.

MERTIS (MErcury Radiometer and Thermal infrared Imaging Spectrometer) is part of ESA's BepiColombo Mercury Planetary Orbiter mission to the innermost planet of the Solar system. MERTIS is designed to identify rock-forming minerals, to map the surface composition, and to study the surface temperature variations with an uncooled microbolometer detector in the hot environment of Mercury. MERTIS is an advanced IR instrument combining a pushbroom IR grating spectrometer (TIS) with a radiometer (TIR) sharing the same optics, instrument electronics and in-fight calibration components for a wavelength range of 7-14 and 7-40 μm, respectively. First results of the ongoing MESSENGER project at Mercury have shown a more complex geology and higher variability of features than previously thought. The MESSENGER studies have demonstrated the need to gain global high-resolution mid-IR spectral and temperature data to achieve a better understanding of the planetary genesis. The MERTIS measurements will acquire this currently missing data set. This article gives a summary of the instrument requirements and its design. We are reporting on the actual instrument development progress, and the status of system and subsystem qualification efforts.

International audience; The Rosetta spacecraft accomplished a flyby of Mars on its way to 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on 25 February 2007. In this paper we describe the measurements obtained by the M channel of the Visual and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS-M) and the first scientific results derived from their analysis. The broad spectral coverage of the VIRTIS-M in the IR permitted the study of various phenomena occurring in the Martian atmosphere; observations were further exploited to achieve accurate absolute radiometric calibration. Nighttime data from the VIRTIS-M constrain the air temperature profile in the lower atmosphere (5-30 km), using variations in CO2 opacity at 4.3 mum. A comparison of this data with the global circulation model (GCM) by Forget et al. (1999) shows a trend of slightly higher air temperature in the VIRTIS-M retrievals; this is accompanied by the presence of moderate decreases (˜5 K) in large sections of the equatorial region. This is potentially related to the occurrence of water ice clouds. Daytime data from the VIRTIS-M reveal CO2 non-local thermodynamic equilibrium emission in the high atmosphere. A mapping of emission intensity confirms its strict dependence on solar zenith angle. Additionally, devoted limb observations allowed the retrieval of vertical emission intensity profiles, indicating a peak around 105 km in southern tropical regions. Ozone content can be effectively monitored by the emission of O2 (a1Deltag) at 1.27 mum. Retrieved emission intensity shows that polar regions are particularly rich in ozone. Aerosol scattering was observed in the 1-2.5 mum region above the night region above the night disk, suggesting the occurrence of very high noctilucent clouds.

The Mercury Radiometer and Thermal Infrared Imaging Spectrometer MERTIS on the joint ESA-JAXA mission BepiColombo to Mercury is combining a spectrometer using an uncooled microbolometer in a pushbroom mode with a highly miniaturized radiometer. A full development model of MERTIS is now available. So, after three flybys of Mercury by the MESSENGER mission and with the Planetary Emissivity Laboratory at DLR in Berlin that can routinely obtain infrared emission spectra at high temperatures it is a good time to review the MERTIS science requirements and the performance in perspective of our new knowledge of Mercury.

MERTIS (MERcury Thermal infrared Imag ing Spectrometer) is an advanced infrare d remote sensing instrument that is part of the ESA mission BepiColombo to the planet Mercury. The scientific goals of MERTIS science are surface composition analyses, identification of ro ck-forming minerals, mapping of the surf ace mineralogy, and studies of surface temperature variations. MERTIS combines a push-broom IR gr ating spectrometer (TIS) with a radiometer (TIR), which operate in the wavelength region of 7-14 µm (TIS) and 7-40 µm (TIR), respectively. The instrument represents a modular concept of the sensor head, electronic units and power/calibration systems. The integrated instrument approach allows the subsystems TIS and TIR to share the same optics, instrument electronics and in-fight calibration components. The instrument is designed to achieve a signal-to-noise ratio above 100 in the 7-14 µm wavelength range with a spectral channel width of 90 nm. The TIS optical design combines a three mirror anastigmat (TMA) with a modified Offner spectrometer. The spatial resolution will be about 500 m globally and better than 500 m for 5-10% of the Mercury’s surface. With an uncooled microbolometer detector, the instrument can be operated in the hot environment of Mercury without the need for a cryogenic cooling system. International audience; Nightside emission measurements of the Visible and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS) on the Venus Express spacecraft were used to estimate the potential for surface data extraction. A selection of orbits over the northern hemisphere was performed for footprints that cover different scales of surface elevation variations. A correction method was used to remove stray light from the measured spectra that is due to direct sunlight striking the instrument. A preliminary radiative transfer calculation technique was applied to simulate Venus nightside radiation. The basic features of the measured spectra are well reproduced. Present limitations of the algorithm are discussed. The variability of the emission window radiances with respect to cloud opacity and surface elevation is modeled and discussed in direct comparison with the measurements. It is demonstrated that a multispectral analysis in the surface and deep atmosphere window ranges (1.0-2.3 mum) and the use of radiance ratios are well suited to decloud the data and to extract surface information from the VIRTIS measurements. This method allows a mapping of surface topography and the retrieval of the surface temperature. A preliminary topography retrieval at Beta Regio was performed and compared with Magellan radar data. Differences are possibly due to emissivity variations on the surface.

MERTIS (MERcury Thermal infrared Imaging Spectrometer) is an advanced infrared remote sensing instrument that is part of the ESA mission BepiColombo to planet Mercury. The enabling technology that allows sending the first spectrometer for the thermal infrared spectral range to Mercury is an uncooled microbolometer. With this detector the instrument can be operated in the hot environment of Mercury without the need for a cryogenic cooling system. The challenge is the characterization and calibration of the instrument. We are reporting on the ongoing calibration efforts including laboratory measurements of analogue materials, end-to-end simulations and a detailed characterization of all components and discuss each of the three elements. The MERTIS instrument is a state of the art imaging spectrometer in the TIR range onboard ESA's Bepi Colombo mission to the planet Mercury. MERTIS has four science goals: the study of Mercury's surface composition, identification of rock-forming minerals, mapping of the surface mineralogy, and the study of surface temperature variations and of the thermal inertia. The instrument is designed to achieve a signal-to-noise-ratio above 100 in the 7-14 µm range with a spectral channel width of 90 nm and a nominal spatial ground resolution of 500 m within the complex thermal and radiation environment of Mercury.

The Visible and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS) on board the ESA/Venus Express mission has technical specifications well suited for many science objectives of Venus exploration. VIRTIS will both comprehensively explore a plethora of atmospheric properties and processes and map optical properties of the surface through its three channels, VIRTIS-M-vis (imaging spectrometer in the 0.3-1 μm range), VIRTIS-M-IR (imaging spectrometer in the 1-5 μm range) and VIRTIS-H (aperture high-resolution spectrometer in the 2-5 μm range). The atmospheric composition below the clouds will be repeatedly measured in the night side infrared windows over a wide range of latitudes and longitudes, thereby providing information on Venus's chemical cycles. In particular, CO, H2O, OCS and SO2 can be studied. The cloud structure will be repeatedly mapped from the brightness contrasts in the near-infrared night side windows, providing new insights into Venusian meteorology. The global circulation and local dynamics of Venus will be extensively studied from infrared and visible spectral images. The thermal structure above the clouds will be retrieved in the night side using the 4.3 μm fundamental band of CO2. The surface of Venus is detectable in the short-wave infrared windows on the night side at 1.01, 1.10 and 1.18 μm, providing constraints on surface properties and the extent of active volcanism. Many more tentative studies are also possible, such as lightning detection, the composition of volcanic emissions, and mesospheric wave propagation. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The selection of the Venus Express mission by ESA in 2002 was the occasion to propose the VIRTIS imaging spectrometer for the payload of this mission to Venus. After the discovery of the infrared windows in the near infrared from ground based observations in the 80ies, it was realized that the surface of Venus is accessible to infrared observation on the night side of Venus. Imaging spectroscopy in the visible and near infrared is therefore a powerful tool to study the Venus atmosphere down to its deepest levels. VIRTIS, the imaging spectrometer of the Rosetta mission (Coradini et al, 1998), as the second generation instrument of this kind after the Phobos/ISM (Bibring et al, 1989), Galileo/NIMS (Carlson et al, 1990) Mars Express/OMEGA (Bibring et al, 2004) and Cassini/VIMS (Brown et al, 2000), is perfectly fitted for extensive observations of the infrared and visible spectral images of Venus, with its unique combination of mapping capabilities at low spectral resolution (VIRTIS-M channel) and high spectral resolution slit spectroscopy (VIRTIS-H channel).

VIRTIS, the infrared imaging spectrometer of the ESA/ROSETTA mission, to be launched in January 2003, is devoted to the in-orbit remote sensing study of comet P/46 Wirtanen. Within the infrared imaging spectrometer VIRTIS, the high spectral resolution channel, VIRTIS-H, has for main scientific objectives to study the fine spectral details of the coma and cometary nucleus, with their composition and physical parameters, in parallel with the imaging spectrometer channel VIRTIS-M. The instrument is a cross-dispersor spectrometer, working in the range 2 - 5 micrometers , at about approximately 1200 spectral resolving power. Its design consists of a telescope, an entrance slit, followed by a collimator, and a prism separating 8 orders of a grating

The visible infrared thermal imaging spectrometer (VIRTIS) is one of the principal payloads to be launched in 2003 on ESA's Rosetta spacecraft. Its primary scientific objective s are to map the surface of the comet Wirtanen, monitor its temperature, and identify the solids and gaseous species on the nucleus and in the coma. VIRTIS will also collet data on two asteroids, one of which has been identified as Mimistrobell. The data is collected remotely using a mapping spectrometer co-boresighted with a high spectral resolution spectrometer. The mapper consists of a Shafer telescope matched to an Offner grating spectrometer capable of gathering high spatial, medium spectral resolution image cubes in the 0.25 to 5 micrometers waveband. The high spectral resolution spectrometer uses an echelle grating and a cross dispersing prism to achieve resolving powers of 1200 to 300 in the 1.9 to 5 micrometers band. Both sub-systems are passively cooled to 130 K and use two Sterling cycle coolers to enable two HgCdTe detector arrays to operate at 70 K. The baseline model payload of Rosetta includes a visual infrared spectral and thermal mapper among the instruments on board the spacecraft orbiting around the comet. This instrument will allow the following scientific goals to be achieved: to characterise the nucleus surface composition (concentration of the ices, mineralogical composition of dust, characteristics of organic compounds); to determine the surface temperature distribution and the dust and gas distribution in the inner cometary coma; to map the asteroid's surface mineralogical composition. In order to achieve these scientific objectives the authors are projecting an instrument composed of two channels: an imaging spectrometer (VIRTIS-M, where M means Mapping mode) and a high resolution spectrometer (VIRTIS-H).

The PFS is optimized for studies for the Martian atmosphere and will be also used for investigations of the surface composition. The instrument is a dual Rotational Reflector Interferometer (RRI) and covers both the SWIR (1.25 - 4.5 micrometers ) and the MIR (5.6 - 40 micrometers ) in two channels. The Noise Equivalent Spectral Radiance (NESR) is predicted to characterize the instrument. The NESR depends of the modulation coefficient, the detectivity of the detectors, the other main parameters of the interferometer, and the spectral characteristics of filters and beamsplitters as well. The modulation coefficient takes into account both the most important deviations of the optical elements from the ideal one's and partial misalignment by mechanical tolerance's. Typically estimated values are for the Short Wavelength Channel (LWC): 2 X 10-8 W/(cm2 sr cm-1) for (sigma) equals 400 cm-1 respective. Some extreme examples of the Martian surface are given where the recording of spectra is promising due to a satisfying signal to noise ratio and some other one's where measurements will be critically.

FTIR spectrometry is a powerful tool to investigate the atmosphere and surface composition of planetary bodies. Studies of Mars will be provided by the Planetary Fourier Spectrometer (PFS) on board the Russian Mars-94 mission. The PFS mainly focuses on problems of the Martian atmosphere but will give some information of the surface composition as well. Especially for atmospheric observations a high spectral resolution must be required. For analysis of the Martian ground the signal-to-noise ratio is the most important parameter to be optimised. These conditions define the optical layout of the instrument. The presented work discusses the solution of the optical instrument as well as the expected results of PFS remote sensing. The spectrometer consists of a dual Rotational Reflector Interferometer (RRI) covering two spectral ranges 220 - 1670 cm-1 and2080 - 8000 cm-1. In the RRI two pairs of retroreflectors connected by L-shaped arms with a common axle are driven in parallel on a circular path. Partial deadjustment due to tolerances as well as tolerance effects of the optical elements are taken into account in the estimation of the spectral responsivity in comparison with the radiation of the Martian surface and atmosphere.

The VIRTIS scientific and technical teams will take advantage of their previous experience in the design and development of spectrometers for space applications. In fact, the various groups contributing to the VIRTIS experiment, from Italy, France and Germany, have been deeply involved in the CASSINI mission, with the experiments VIMS and CIRS. The targets of the ROSETTA mission are the most primi- tive solar system bodies : comets and asteroids. ROSETTA will study in detail a comet nucleus, the prime target of the mission, and will fly by one or two asteroids. The small bodies of the solar system are of great interest for planetary science and their study is crucial to understand the solar system formation. In fact it is believed that comets and, to a lesser extent, asteroids underwent a moderate evolution so that they preserve some pristine solar system material. Comets and asteroids are in close relationship with the plan- etesimals, which formed from the solar nebula 4.6 billion years ago. The global characterisation of one comet nucleus and one or two asteroids will provide basic information on the origin of the solar system and on the interrelation between the solar system and the interstellar dust environment. The ROSETTA mission is designed to obtain the above mentioned scientific goals by : (a) in situ analysis of comet material ; (b) long period of remote sensing of the comet. The combination of remote sensing and in situ measurements will increase the scientific return of the mission. In fact, the “in situ” measurements will give relevant “ground-truth” for the remote sensing information and, in turn, the locally collected data will be interpreted in the appropriate scenario provided by remote sensing investigation. The scientific payload of ROSETTA includes a Visual InfraRed Spectral and Thermal Spectrometer (VIRTIS) among the instrument on board the spacecraft orbiting around the comet. This instrument is fundamental to detect and study the evolution of specific fingerprints—such as the typical spectral bands of minerals and molecules—arising from surface components and from materials dispersed in the coma. Their identification is a primary goal of the ROSETTA mission as it will allow us to identify the nature of the main constituent of the comets. Moreover, the surface thermal evolution during comet approach to Sun is important information that can be obtained by means of spectroscopic observation. The VIRTIS design and its detailed science goals are reported hereafter.
