The current status and annotated checklist of fresh- and brackish-water amphipod species inhabiting the inland waters (streams, lakes, ponds, lagoons, subterranean waters, etc.) of Turkey is presented. Totally, 171 papers, 3 books, 3 book chapters, 5 conference papers, 2 projects, 3 PhD and 3 MSc thesis were examined in the present study. As the result of the previous records, 201 taxa comprising 121 amphipods (16 families, 31 genera), 27 isopods (9 families, 13 genera), 9 mysids (1 family, 5 genera), 4 tanaids (3 families, 4 genera) and 40 decapods (16 families, 18 genera) were compiled. All the previously recorded localities of each taxon were listed in detail. The endemic taxa and the doubtful records were indicated and discussed. The checklist of Harpalini inhabiting Turkey includes 202 species. This paper provides a comprehensive list of recent papers (since the 1960s) dealing with this fauna, together with a review of Turkish Odotoncarus. The genus Cryptofavognathus is represented with only two species: Cryptofavognathus anatolicus Doğan & Dönel and C. afyonensis (Koç & Akyol). The third species, Cryptofavognathus bellussp. nov., was detected during a faunistic study on raphignathoid mites of Sansa Gorge (Türkiye) and described here. This paper also presents a current species list for the family Cryptognathidae Oudemans, with the following taxonomic recommendation in the genus Favognathus Luxton: Favognathus aegyptiaca (Fawzy, Khalil & Yassin) and Favognathus rosetta (Fawzy, Khalil & Yassin) described from Egypt should be considered species inquirendae due to their inadequate diagnostic characteristics and poor descriptions. Simple Summary: The genus Microphor contains small to very small true flies (Diptera) well known for the kleptoparasitic behavior of females, often observed as "stealing" tiny prey from spider webs. Altogether, 22 species of the genus (including 5 described in this paper) are known worldwide, and our paper loosely follows a recent study from North America. It is quite surprising that we add five new species to seven already known from West Palaearctic, which is the most studied area in the world with respect to the Diptera. Microphor baechlii sp. nov. (Switzerland, Turkey), M. chvalai sp. nov. (France), M. nevadensis sp. nov. (Spain), M. pallipes sp. nov. (Italy), and M. turcicus sp. nov. (Turkey) are described and illustrated. The neotype of M. anomalus (Meigen, 1824) is designated. Males of all known Palaearctic species of Microphor are keyed, genitalia are illustrated for new species and species previously inadequately illustrated, and main diagnostic characters are discussed. Microphorstrobli Chvála, 1986 is newly recorded from Bulgaria, M. anomalus (Meigen, 1824) is newly recorded from Turkey, and M. holosericeus (Meigen, 1804) is newly recorded from Turkey and Portugal. In this study, Turkish Cousinia species were examined in point of chromosome number and morphology. To our knowledge, this work is the first comprehensive chromosomal study regarding Turkish Cousinia as a whole, especially for endemics. As consistent with previous reports, the chromosome numbers are mostly 2n = 26 and have been determined also as 2n = 24 for only the members of Cynaroideae and Sphaerocephalae sections. An interesting result of this paper is that there is not any polyploid species in this taxonomic group and all of them are diploids. Concerning the chromosome evolution of the Cousinia species, we concluded that merely dysploidy is effective within the genus and evolutionally a unipolar reduction goes on in the basic chromosome number in speciation (from 13 to 12). In terms of general chromosomal information, the chromosomes of the genus consist of metacentric and submetacentric types and they could be categorized in small category according to Lima De Faria classification (0.67-3.43). According to chromosomal indices used in this paper, while most species have symmetrical chromosomes, fewer have asymmetrical ones. From this point, it could be said that Cousinia stapfiana could be assessed as the most evolved taxa in karyomorphology according to the average of all indexes used in here. Besides, Cousinia bicolor, Cousinia birandiana, and Cousinia sintenisii are species having the most primitive chromosome within the genus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, Allium sphaeronixum, a new species of the sect. Codonoprasum from Turkey, is described and illustrated. The new species is endemic to Central Anatolia, limited to the area of Nevşehir, where it grows on sandy or rocky soil at an elevation of 1000–1300 m a.s.l. Its morphology, phenology, karyology, leaf anatomy, seed testa micromorphology, chorology, and conservation status are examined in detail. Corrigendum to: Investigation of Pycnogenol Content in Five Different Pine Barks Species Grown in Turkey by HPLC-UV and LC-MS Throughout the paper, "Pycnogenol" has been updated to "Pycnogenol®" or "phenolic", depending on context. In this paper, Palaearctic material of the genus Lobrathium Mulsant & Rey from many museums was studied. Lobrathium azizsancari sp. nov. from Turkey was described, illustrated, and distinguished from related congeners. Additional records of 14 Lobrathium species, among them four new country records, were reported. These were L. anale (Lucas) from Libya, L. multipunctum (Fauvel) from Montenegro, L. lederi (Eppelsheim) from Armenia, and L. rugipenne (Hochhuth) from Azerbaijan. Sennertia is a diverse and widely distributed genus of mites within the family Chaetodactylidae, and the most successful group of mites in establishing phoretic relationships with bees. Although 77 valid species of Sennertia are known in the world, only two species, Sennertia (Sennertia) gargantua Zachvatkin and Sennertia (S.) zhelochovtsevi Zachvatkin have been recorded from Turkey. But, these two bee-associated species have not been noticed and not listed in the studies on mite fauna of Turkey. OConnor & Klimov in 2003 and Klimov & OConnor in 2008 stated that the distribution information of Sennertia (S.) gargantua in Turkey was probably an error. This paper reports the presence of Sennertia (S.) gargantua on a Carpenter bee in Turkey with an additional new record of the genus from Turkey, viz. Sennertia (S.) cerambycina (Scopoli). In the present work, a key to the known species for Turkey is also provided. It is noticed that genital setae are duplicated on the right side of an examined specimen of Sennertia (S.) gargantua. Achillea alimeana Semiz & Uysal sp. nov. of sect. Santolinoidea DC. (Asteraceae), was described, diagnosed and illustrated as a new species. It was collected from Akdağ Mountains in Denizli Province. In this paper, the diagnostic characters of A. alimeana and its similar species were discussed in the morphological, palynological and molecular findings. In this paper, two species are newly recognized from Turkey. One is new to science, described as Ozyptila kahramanmarasensis sp. n. on the basis of a male specimen from Kahramanmaraş Province. In the present paper, two little‐known species (T. olympicus Boiss. and T. pichleri Boiss.) endemic to Turkey are evaluated in terms of morphology based on numerous authentic and/or new collections. Additionally, the phylogenetic positions of these little‐known species are evaluated based on newly generated sequences of nrDNA ITS, trnL and trnL‐F. As a result of the morphological examination, lectotypes are designated and documented for both species together with amended diagnosis. The phylogenetic analysis of the ITS data indicates that T. olympicus and T. latifolius Boiss. var. angustifolius are sister taxa, while T. dubius Scop. and T. pichleri are nested together in a different subclade of Tragopogon sect. Majores (Artemcz.) Kuthath s.l. However, neither species is resolved in the cpDNA tree due to low nucleotide diversity. In this study, the list of Turkish Nemestrinid species was updated with new records. Specimens in Metin Aktaş Zoological Museum of Gazi University from different regions of Turkey were evaluated. Nemestrinus bombiformis (Portschinsky, 1892) and Stenopteromyia bolivari (Strobl, 1905) are recorded from Turkey for the first time. With these new records, thirteen species of Nemestrinidae are known from Turkey. Distribution maps of the species are given. One of the economically important species is Penaeus kerathurus (Forskål, 1755), which is widespread in the Mediterranean ecosystem. This paper presents results of research on reproductive biology of Penaeus kerathurus in the Sea of Marmara. A total of 1404 specimens were dissected to determine the maturity stages, reproduction time, and length at first reproduction. The female-to-male ratio was 1:0.9. A high percentage of mature females was determined in April, May and July. Moreover, the value of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) decreased after July. The spawning period was observed between April and July, and its intensity increased in July. The carapace length at first sexual maturity was determined to be 39 mm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a study of free-living nematodes (excepting Dorylaimida) from Mount Ararat, Turkey. A total of 25 species are recorded, which belong to the orders Enoplida (one species), Triplonchida (2), Chromadorida (1), Monhysterida (2), Plectida (4) and Rhabditida (18). Nine of them are new for the Turkish fauna: Acrobeles andalusicus, A. ciliatus, Acrolobus longigubernaculum, Cervidellus vexilliger, Chiloplacus trilineatus, C. bisexualis, Panagrolaimus rigidus, Propanagrolaimus hygrophilus, and Teratocephalus terrestris. Three species, namely A. longigubernaculum, C. vexilliger and T. auriculatus, are re-described, including morphological and morphometrical data, and SEM study. In this paper, two species are newly recognized in Turkey. One is new to science, described as Zodarion kunti sp. n. (♂, ♀) from southeast Anatolian region. The other, Zodarion christae Bosmans, 2009 is found for the first time in Denizli, Antalya, and Muğla provinces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present paper addresses the study of new fossils of the extinct lutrine Lartetictis Ginsburg & Morales, 1996 from the early middle Miocene of Göriach (Austria, late MN5-early MN6) and from the hominoid locality of Paşalar (Turkey, late MN5). The mandibular material of Lartetictis from Göriach is described and assigned to the type species, Lartetictis dubia. The mandibular and dental specimens from Paşalar proceed from the digging seasons 1983–2018, and constitute one of the larger samples of Lartetictis, enabling us to erect the species Lartetictis pasalarensis sp. nov. Its large size and features that are more derived than those of the Central European L. dubia characterises this new Turkish species. Among other features, L. pasalarensis shows a relatively low and broader P4 protocone, a larger distolingual expansion of the M1 lingual platform, higher cuspids of the m1 and a more trenchant m1 talonid. This new taxon represents the first datum of Lartetictis in Turkey as well as the easternmost record of the genus. Careful comparison between Lartetictis and other extinct otters from the middle Miocene, including Paralutra in Europe, Siamogale in Asia and Mionictis in North America, suggests a closer relationship with the latter group. The paper presents new host records for Zeuxia cinerea Meigen, 1826 (Diptera: Tachinidae) from Turkey. New parasitoid host couples are Temnorhinus hololeucus (Pallas, 1781) and Maximus strabus (Gyllenhal, 1834) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) for Z. cinerea. Türkiye is known to have the highest diversity of the spider family Agelenidae in the Western Palaearctic and the highest diversity of the subfamily Ageleninae globally. The new agelenid genus Anatextrix gen. nov. (Ageleninae, Textricini) and its type species, A. spectabilis sp. nov. (♂♀; Mersin and Adana provinces, southern Türkiye), are described. Tragopogon porrifolius occurs in Turkey with 3 taxonomically confused subspecies: T. porrifolius subsp. eriospermus, T. porrifolius subsp. longirostris, and T. porrifolius subsp. abbreviatus. In the present paper, T. porrifolius subsp. abbreviatus endemic to Turkey is raised at specific level based on morphological and molecular analysis. After detailed assessment of original herbarium specimens and literature studies, we found that this name is not typified yet. Thus, a lectotype is provided together with an emended diagnosis; synonym, distribution map, and conservation status for the first time. In this paper, we revise the Merodon aberrans species group of the genus Merodon Meigen, 1803 (Diptera: Syrphidae), providing morphological diagnoses and descriptions, molecular data for three species, as well as an illustrated key and a discussion of the different taxonomic characters used. We also discuss distribution patterns for this species group. The results revealed that the M. aberrans group is composed of five described species (M. aberrans Egger, 1860, M. brevis Paramonov, 1926, M. flavitibius Paramonov, 1926, M. hamifer Sack, 1913, and M. warnckei Hurkmans, 1993) and three new ones, namely M. hermonensis Vujić, Radenković et Likov sp. nov., M. petiolatus Vujić, Radenković et Rojo sp. nov., and M. retectus Vujić, Radenković et Likov sp. nov. Following a detailed study of the type material in different entomological collections, the status of several species is revised, one new synonym is proposed (subspecies M. aberrans isperensis Hurkmans, 1993 as junior synonym of M. flavitibius), lectotypes are designated for M. kneri Mik, 1867 and M. flavitibius, and paralectotypes are designated for M. hamifer and M. flavitibius. Seven out of eight species from the M. aberrans group are distributed in the Asian continent, namely all Caucasian countries, Turkey and Iran, confirming the notion about high diversity of Merodon species in these regions, but also highlighting the need for a systematic faunistic research. The finding of Aphrodina dutrugei (Cocquand, 1862) in a rich collection of non-rudist bivalve fauna from the famous Cenomanian-Turonian carbonates of the Afro-Arabian Plate has permitted the reevaluation of venerid bivalves during an important period of their evolution. The genus Aphrodina Conrad, 1869, Family Veneridae Rafinesque, 1815, embraces several Tethyan Cretaceous species that range from Cenomanian to Santonian. During the late Albian-Maastrichtian 'Aphrodiniid' venerids, were distributed along the western margin of the Atlantic (North and South America), the Afro-Arabian Plate (Jordan, SE Turkey, Morocco, Algeria and Egypt), the eastern Tethys, and the Southern Ocean (India, Japan, western Australia and New Zealand). They are also known in the Turonian-Santonian Trans-Saharan Seaway (Gabon). Until now these fossils have been unknown in any Upper Cretaceous localities of southeastern Turkey. In this paper, we report the first record of one of the most common and widespread shallow infaunal species, Aphrodina dutrugei, in the Cenomanian Derdere Formation in the Mardin-Mazıdağı area, SE Turkey, which is in the extreme northeastern part of its known range. In this paper, we investigated a set of narrow endemics of Centaurea subsect. Phalolepis from the mountains of South Italy (mainly Calabria and Salento), segregated from the widespread species Centaurea deusta, using microsatellite (SSR) markers. The goal was to analyse the genetic makeup (levels and structure) of C. deusta and the segregated species and verify whether genetic clusters were in agreement with current classification of the species. With C. deusta, we also carried out an ecological niche modelling (ENM) analysis to check its potential distribution under present climatic conditions and to project it to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). As also found in former studies with subsect. Phalolepis in Greece and Turkey using the same set of SSRs, genetic diversity for the segregated Italian species was higher than expected for narrow endemics with small populations. Genetic clusters, however, were not correlated with the described species and did not support the segregation of the purported narrow endemics from a widely defined C. deusta. The results of the ENM indicate that the Adriatic Sea was a migration corridor for C. deusta at the LGM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abrolophus boleticolussp. nov. and Marantelophus kastamonuensissp. nov. are described and illustrated from larvae collected from the wild, edible mushrooms, Boletus aereus (Boletaceae) and Marasmius oreades (Marasmiaceae), respectively, in Türkiye. Both of these erythraeid genera, which belong to the subfamily Abrolophinae, have comb-like seta on the palptarsus. Land snails, including some economically important species, are commonly found in forests and mountainous regions of Türkiye. Türkiye's large geomorphological region and four surrounding seas, which offer a variety of malacofauna, help Türkiye achieve an endemism grade of over 65%. Despite extensive research over the past few decades, we still lack a sufficient understanding of the species identification of land snails in Türkiye, particularly in areas like forested mountain regions, and it is assumed that there are more than 1000 taxa in total. This review emphasizes the existence of invasive non-native snail species in Türkiye, such as Arion ater (Linnaeus, 1758) and Arion vulgaris Moquin-Tandon, 1855, which have a negative impact on agricultural and horticultural output. In addition to these species, Theba pisana, Cornu aspersum, Xeropicta derbentina, Xeropicta krynickii, Cernuella virgata and Eobania vermiculata are also found in Türkiye as non- native land snail species. Moreover, it also places a strong emphasis on the necessity of managing invasive species to reduce their detrimental effects on natural ecosystems by giving examples from the world and covers the predictions about the possible threats that the presence of non-native invasive land snail species in Türkiye may pose in the future. Arge yildirimi Haris et Kaplan sp. n. is described from Turkey, Diyarbakir Province and compared to Arge pectoralis (Leach, 1817) and Arge frivaldszkyi (Tischbein, 1852). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new species from Turkey, Anteon leleji sp. nov. (Hymenoptera, Dryinidae), is described and illustrated. Its relationship with Palaearctic and Afrotropical species of Anteon is discussed. The new species is close to A. xericum Olmi & van Harten described from Yemen, and known also from other Afrotropical countries. This paper reviews the Heterostigmata (Acari: Prostigmata) in Turkey, with an updated checklist of 41 species belonging to 7 families and 16 genera. Heterostigmatic mites Kerdabania variabilis Khaustov (Neopygmephoridae), Tarsonemus talpae Schaarschmidt (Tarsonemidae); T. bilobatus Suski and T. aequalis Livshits, Mitrofanov & Sharonov were identified as new records for mite fauna of Turkey. Tarsonemus smithi Ewing and T. waitei Banks have also been found during this study. The samples were collected during the vegetation periods from garlic growing areas and fruit orchards in Kastamonu and Ankara, Turkey, during the period 2012–2015. The plant samples were extracted by using Berlese funnel and the specimens were mounted in micro slides in Hoyer's medium. Collection data and geographical distribution of these species are provided. Amphibians are the most endangered taxa among vertebrates, and they face many threats during their complex life cycles. The species' life history traits and occurrence database help understand species responses against ecological factors. Consequently, the species-level-trait database has gained more prominence in recent years as a useful tool for understanding the dimensions of communities, assembly processes of communities, and conserving biodiversity at the ecosystem level against environmental changes. However, in Turkey, there are deficiencies in the knowledge of the ecological traits of amphibians compared to other vertebrate taxa, as most studies have focused on their distribution or taxonomic status. Consequently, there is a need to create such a database for future research on all known extant amphibians in Turkey. We compiled a species-level data set of species traits and occurrences for all amphibians in Turkey using 436 literature sources. We completed 36 trait categories with 5611 occurrence data for 37 amphibian species in Turkey. In underdeveloped and/or developing countries, garbage is often randomly piled up in open areas. This method has been used to dispose of garbage/solid waste in Turkey for many years. Although pollution is not at the forefront in Bingöl province, the area located in the city center of the city has been used as a wild garbage storage area for approximately 18 years. Since the garbage in the area poses a danger to people and the environment, this area has become inactive with the establishment of a new solid waste disposal facility in the city. There are plants that have adapted to this area, which has been empty for about ten years. In this study, it was tried to determine in what proportions and organs the plant species distributed in the area accumulate heavy metals that may have come from garbage leachate. Plants identified in the field; Alyssum simplex, Cirsium libanoticum, Descurainia sophia, Fumaria asepala, Fumaria officinalis, Matricaria chamomilla, Papaver dubium, Scrophularia canina, Trifolium repens and Ziziphora capitata species. Fe, Cr, As, Cd and Pb concentrations (mg kg-1 ) of these species were measured in root, stem, leaf and flower organs and translocation factors (TF) were calculated for these species. In conclusion; Alyssum simplex, Cirsium libanoticum and Fumaria asepala for Fe, Cirsium libanoticum, Fumaria asepala, Fumaria officinalis and Matricaria chamomilla Cr and As, Cirsium libanoticum, Papaver dubium and Scrophularia canina for Cd and all other species except Alyssum simplex and Scrophularia canina for Pb translocation factors (TF) were found to be greater than 1 (TF>1). The present study describes a new species Dorycnium vuralii (Fabaceae) from Çankırı, Türkiye. The new species is compared morphologically to the taxa of sect. Bonjeanea and sect. Dorycnium along with pollen micromorphology, leaflet, and seed micromorphology. The geographical distribution of Dorycnium vuralii is mapped. The phylogenetic relationships between the new species and other closely related species in the genus are inferred based on DNA data from both cpDNA and nrDNA (rbcL1&ITS). Although phylogenetic implications are different in the two DNA barcoding regions, D. vuralii is shown to be a new species in both molecular data. Pohlia lescuriana (Sull.) Ochi and Oleolophozia perssonii (H.Buch & S.W.Arnell) L.Söderstr., De Roo & Hedd. have been identified as new to Turkey and South-west Asia, following a recent bryological excursion in Giresun province of Turkey. The genus Oleolophozia L.Söderstr., De Roo & Hedd. is also new to Turkey. In this paper, brief descriptions, illustrations, information about geographic distribution, ecology and comparisons with morphologically similar taxa are given. This paper deals with the occurrence of Niphates toxifera (Porifera) on the Levantine coast of Turkey. This species was originally described from the coast of Lebanon and was known to be confined to a restricted area (Beirut-Syria-Israel). In February 2019, three specimens of this species were photographed and collected at 10-15 m on rocks (including cave walls) off Samandağ, near İskenderun Bay (north-east Levantine Sea), indicating its northwards spread. The distributional pattern and on-going range expansion trend of this species indicate the possibility of a Lessepsian species. This species is also a new record for the marine fauna of Turkey. A new species, Sarcophaga (Pandelleisca) mersinensis sp. nov. is described from the Mediterranean region of Turkey. The male terminalia are documented with line drawings, photographs and scanning electron microscope images. The species is compared with the two most similar species, Sarcophaga (Pandelleisca) baudeti (Lehrer) and Sarcophaga (Pandelleisca) theodori (Lehrer), both known from Israel. In this paper, Leptobium angoranum from Ankara (Beypazarı) province in central northern Anatolia is described. Its diagnostic characters are illustrated and distinguished from related congeners. A new species viz. Molothrognathus manisaensissp. nov., collected from litter and soil under Verbascum sp. (Scrophulariaceae), Inula viscosa (Asteraceae), Quercus coccifera and Q. infectoria (Fagaceae), and the unknown male of Neognathus ozkaniAkyol & Koç, 2012, collected from litter and soil under Olea europaea (Oleaceae) in Manisa province, Türkiye, are described and illustrated. In the present study, three Sorbus species in the Rosaceae family naturally growing in Artvin province of Turkey were collected. To determine the antioxidant activity, total phenolic and flavonoids capacity of the extracts, their scavenging capacity for (2,2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, reducing capacity for Fe3+ (FRAP) and copper (II) ions (CUPRAC) were analyzed. Besides, disc diffusion method was used to determine antibacterial activity. It was found that all Sorbus fruit, flower, leaf and pedicle methanolic extracts showed different levels of antioxidant activity. Results of the the total polyphenol, total flavonoid, FRAP, CUPRAC and DPPH analysis, the highest activity was measured in S. persica pedicle, S. umbellate var. cretica leaf, S. persica leaf, S. umbellata var. cretica leaf and S. persica leaf extracts as 25.7 ± 16.49 mg GAE/g, 7.469 ± 0.4926 mg of quercetin/g, 6.248 ± 0.2374 µmol FeSO4.7H2O/g and, 164.4 ± 4.209 mmol TEAC and 46.33 µg/mL, respectively. It was revealed that methanolic extracts of Sorbus plant showing antibacterial activity had very high minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values compared to ampicillin. The genus Sideritis L. (Lamiaceae) is represented by 46 species in Turkey with an 79% endemism ratio, 42 of 46 belonging to the section Empodoclia. In this review article, Sideritis species growing in Turkey have been evaluated for phytochemical constituents and biological activities. The data for the isolates, components and extracts of the Anatolian Sideritis species and their bioactivity studies were retrieved from the main databases WoS, Scopus and PubMed from 1975 until 31 December 2022. In this review article, terpenoids, flavonoids, phenolics and other secondary metabolites isolated from Turkish Sideritis species were reported. Anatolian Sideritis species, which primarily consist of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, were studied in detail. Sideritis plants are represented by 46 species in Turkey, and 25 of them were investigated for their diterpenoids through isolation or LC–MS studies. Most of the diterpenoids of Turkish Sideritis species have ent-kaurene skeleton, among them linearol, siderol, 7-epicandicandiol and sideridiol were found to be the main compounds. Exceptionally, labdane, pimarane and beyerene diterpenoids were only found in a few species. For phenolics and flavonoids, only 12 species were investigated until now, and they were found to be rich in phenylethanoid glycosides and flavonoid glycosides. In terms of activity, most of the species were tested for antioxidant activity, followed by antimicrobial and anti-ulcer/anti-inflammatory activities. Their cytotoxic, enzyme inhibitory, antinociceptive and antistress activities were less frequently studied. This paper reports the presence of a malformation in an adult female specimen of Storchia robusta (Berlese) collected from Sansa Gorge, Turkey. In the species, local anomalies such as the number of aggenital, genital, and body setae have been previously reported; however, this is the first time atrophy in S. robusta has been recorded. The Chyromyidae of Turkey are reviewed and all 15 species known from the country are listed. This paper describes a floristic study of Bozburun Mountain and its environs. The study was conducted between 1998 and 2002, during which time 2419 vascular plant samples were collected. After the identification of the specimens, the total flora was determined to consist of 645 taxa belonging to 341 genera and 86 families. The endemism rate of the 645 taxa was 16.1% (n = 104 taxa). The phytogeographical spectrum of the species was as follows: Mediterranean 207 (32.1%), Irano-Turanian 51 (7.9%) and Euro-Siberian elements 33 (5.1%). Of the species we sampled, 311 (48.2%) were widespread and the phytogeographical regions of 10 (1.5%) were unknown. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Natural sources used as folk medicines in Merzifon were investigated in this study. It was determined that 35 plant and 4 animal species together with 3 animal and 1 inorganic sources are being used as various preparations of folk medicines in Merzifon area. All the collected medicinal plants were identified and voucher specimens were deposited in the Herbarium of Hacettepe University, Faculty of Pharmacy (HUEF). Local names, part(s) used, methods of preparation and traditional usages of folk medicines are given in this paper. Traditional herbal medicines were mostly used for gastrointestinal system diseases, heart and circulatory system disorders. When our findings were compared with previously published literatures on folk medicines in Turkey, new local names for 4 species and different usages for 6 plants were found. This paper deals with the Old World species of Eryngium L. which grow mostly in regions with a Mediterranean type climate. Two centers of diversity are visible: one in the Western Mediterranean (Iberian Peninsula, Morocco), and the other one in South-West Asia. Distribution maps are presented for several species from South-West Asia, which is probably the genus' most important center of diversity. A preliminary new classification of the genus Eryngium is presented, including a new combination (Eryngium subgenus Fruticosum (Wolff) Wörz stat. nov.). Both the species and the sectional diversity are conspicuously present in Turkey, where 9 of 14 sections occur. This sectional diversity decreases in an easterly direction towards Central Asia. Five Mediterranean species are much more closely related to some North American Eryngiums than to the other Old World ones. Not related to the American sections is Sect. Palmito H.
