The discovery of multi-species synchronous spawning of scleractinian corals on the Great Barrier Reef in the 1980s stimulated an extraordinary effort to document spawning times in other parts of the globe. Unfortunately, most of these data remain unpublished which limits our understanding of regional and global reproductive patterns. The Coral Spawning Database (CSD) collates much of these disparate data into a single place. The CSD includes 6178 observations (3085 of which were unpublished) of the time or day of spawning for over 300 scleractinian species in 61 genera from 101 sites in the Indo-Pacific. The goal of the CSD is to provide open access to coral spawning data to accelerate our understanding of coral reproductive biology and to provide a baseline against which to evaluate any future changes in reproductive phenology. Scleractinian corals often reproduce in synchronized spawning events to maximize gamete fertilization and coral larval production. The extent of spawning synchrony and its timing vary among coral taxa and among biogeographic regions. Information is, however, limited, especially for equatorial reefs, hindering the identification of environmental cues that influence gametogenic cycles and spawning. To investigate the timing of gamete maturation and spawning in Palau and their association with environmental cues, we monitored tagged colonies from 11 common coral species within three families over 21 months. We then combined our findings with previous available information to more broadly summarize the known coral spawning patterns in Palau. In combination with previous observations, our data confirmed the occurrence of an extended coral spawning season in Palau, spreading over 9 months. Some coral taxa participated in synchronous multispecific spawning events, with the largest occurring throughout April and May. Other coral taxa, including Montipora corals, displayed inter- and intra-specific spawning asynchrony. Consequently, environmental cues associated with spawning patterns differed among species. The largest Acropora spawning event of the year (March–April) was associated with the lowest yearly high tides and a monthly mean sea surface temperature around 29 °C. Massive Porites spawned predominantly in April and May, associated with increased monthly levels of solar insolation. Porites rus spawned in June–August and was associated with longest monthly day length. Our study demonstrates that Palauan coral assemblages have complex patterns of multispecific spawning events throughout most of the year, which may have important implications for larval dispersal, supply and recruitment patterns, influencing the resilience of coral reefs in this region. Egg size and fecundity are often used as proxies for coral reproductive success and health. The amount of energy a coral invests in reproduction reflects its environmental conditions during gametogenesis. Additionally, assuming resources for reproduction are limited, it is thought that an increase in egg size should result in a decrease in the number of eggs produced i.e. investing in many small eggs or fewer larger eggs. The biannually spawning populations of Scott Reef offer a unique opportunity to compare the egg size and polyp fecundity of corals exposed to different environmental conditions during gametogenesis, prior to spawning in autumn (March) and spring (October). In this study, we investigated the relationship between egg size and polyp fecundity within and between seven Acropora species from 2008 to 2010. We also quantified the fecundity and egg size of four Acropora species that spawn during both autumn and spring (2008–2010). We found no seasonal variability in egg size and fecundity in the species studied here, possibly as a result of a summer light regime being impacted by high cloud cover in cyclone season. There was high natural variability and no apparent trade-off between egg size and fecundity, both within and between each species. Coral populations continue to decline in many regions because of natural and anthropogenic disturbances; and the persistence of coral populations mainly relies on natural recruitment through coral reproduction. However, studies on the reproduction of many important reef-building coral species in one of the most biodiverse region, the Coral Triangle, are very limited. Here, we investigated the reproductive biology of the coral Acropora millepora in Bolinao-Anda Reef Complex, northwestern Philippines from February 2014 to March 2015, through in situ assessment of gamete maturity, histological examination of gamete development and ex situ spawning observations. Results showed that A. millepora exhibited an annual gametogenic cycle. Formation of oocytes took place within 8 months, whereas spermatocytes developed in 3 months before the gamete release. Abundance and size of eggs in A. millepora were greatest during the months nearest to the spawning period, which coincides with the rapid increase in sea surface temperature. Ex situ broadcast spawning occurred around the months of February-March, which suggests an extended spawning pattern. Results provide additional information on coral reproduction in the region and reveal the potential of A. millepora in providing coral propagules for the replenishment and recovery of degraded coral populations. Despite the global accumulation of coral spawning records over the past three decades, information on inter-annual variation in spawning time is still insufficient, resulting in difficulty in predicting coral spawning time. Here, we present new information on in situ spawning times of scleractinian corals at Lyudao, Taiwan, covering their inter-annual variations over a 7-yr period (2010-2016). Spawning of 42 species from 16 genera in eight families was recorded. The majority were hermaphroditic spawners (38 of 42 species), and their spawning occurred 2-4 h after sunset on 1-11 d after the full moon (AFM), mostly in April and May. There were two distinct patterns in the two dominant taxa, the genus Acropora (14 species) and the family Merulinidae (18 species in eight genera). The annual spawning of Acropora corals mostly occurred on a single night in May with high inter-annual variation of spawning (lunar) days between 1 and 11 d AFM. In contrast, the annual spawning of merulinid corals commonly occurred over 2-3 consecutive nights in two consecutive months, April and May, with the specific range of spawning days around the last quarter moon (between 5 and 8 d AFM). The distinct spawning patterns of these taxa were also documented at Okinawa and Kochi, Japan, where similar long-term monitoring of in situ coral spawning has been conducted. This variability in spawning days implies different regulatory mechanisms of synchronous spawning where Acropora corals might be more sensitive to exogenous environmental factors (hourglass mechanism), compared to merulinid corals, which may rely more on endogenous biological rhythms (oscillator mechanism). The United States Virgin Islands are comprised of two separate insular platforms separated by the deep water Anegada Passage. Although managed by the same regulations, as one fishery, several physical and spatial differences exist between the two northern shelf islands, St. Thomas and St. John, and isolated St. Croix. Based on two long-term fisheries independent datasets, collected by the U.S. Virgin Islands Territorial Coral Reef Monitoring Program and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment, there were significant differences between the northern USVI and St. Croix in both the occurrence and size of several species of large and commercially important reef fishes. These fishes are primarily apex piscivores and generally the first species over-exploited in small-scale fisheries. The disparities between the fish communities on the two island shelves cannot be explained solely by differences in habitat (coral cover, rugosity) or fisheries management, such as relative amount of marine protected area in local waters. They are instead probably caused by a combination of several other interrelated factors including water depth, fishing methodology, fishable area, and the presence or absence of viable fish spawning areas. This study considers those aspects, and illustrates the need for management of island artisanal fisheries that is tailored to the physical and spatial constraints imposed by insular platforms. The timing of sexual reproduction was investigated in Favites colemani and F. abdita in Bolinao, Pangasinan, northwestern Philippines. Bimonthly to weekly rapid sampling and histological analyses were conducted in permanently marked colonies for the period of 12 months from February 2014 to January 2015. The study showed both F. colemani and F. abdita are hermaphroditic broadcasting species with an annual gametogenic cycle. Both species spawned in days between full moon and last quarter of May. Maximal gamete release occurred 1–2 days before the last quarter between 20:30 and 22:30 h. Spawning events coincided with the highest mean seawater temperature and low tidal stands, suggesting lunar cycle and temperature variations may serve as potential proximate cues that could affect the timing and synchronize reproduction of these two faviid species. Most coral species off Australia's west coast spawn in the austral autumn (March-April), with a few species also spawning in the southern spring or early summer (November-December). This is the reverse timing to spawning recorded off Australia's east coast. Porites lutea, a gonochoric broadcast spawner that is common on Australia's west coast, is shown here to spawn in the months of November or December, as it does on Australia's east coast. Spawning occurred between 2 and 5 nights after full moon, with the majority of spawning activity on night 3. Gametes developed over three to four months with rapid development in the last two weeks before spawning. The majority of scleractinian corals are hermaphrodites that broadcast spawn their gametes separately or packaged as egg-sperm bundles during spawning events that are timed to the lunar cycle. The egg-sperm bundle is an efficient way of transporting gametes to the ocean surface where fertilization takes place, while minimizing sperm dilution and maximizing the opportunity for gamete encounters during a spawning event. To date, there are few studies that focus on the formation and structure of egg-sperm bundle. This study explores formation, ultrastructure, and longevity of the egg-sperm bundle in Montipora capitata, a major reef building coral in Hawai'i. Our results show that the egg-sperm bundle is formed by a mucus layer secreted by the oocytes. The sperm package is located at the center of each bundle, possibly reflecting the development of male and female gametes in different mesenteries. Once the egg-sperm bundle has reached the ocean surface, it breaks open within 10-35 min, depending on the environmental conditions (i.e., wind, water turbulence). Although the bundle has an ephemeral life span, the formation of an egg-sperm bundle is a fundamental part of the reproductive process that could be strongly influenced by climate change and deterioration of water quality (due to anthropogenic effects) and thus requires further investigation. Black coral colonies belonging to Antipathella subpinnata (Myriopathidae), found in Adriatic Sea (off the Tremiti Islands) and in Tyrrhenian Sea (Mezzo Canale), were inspected with the aim of investigating their reproductive activity. The small colony (about 42 cm tall) from Adriatic Sea was sexually immature, whereas the larger (about 120 cm tall) five colonies from Tyrrhenian Sea were fertile. Four colonies were males and one was a female, thus confirming the gonochoric condition already known for the black coral. Semithin sections proved that most of the egg and sperm masses flow out through the pharynx, even though small gamete masses were also observed emerging from the tentacles. In the female polyps, egg masses were enveloped by parental tissue derived from the breakage of the mesenterial septa, as observed in the male polyps for the sperm cysts masses. Ultrastructural observations provided details on the characteristics of egg and sperm in this taxon. Sperm stood out for the presence of an acrosome-like structure derived from the merging of pro-acrosomal vesicles. Data on sexual reproduction of scleractinian coral species living in temperate zones, particularly in the Mediterranean Sea, are quite scarce. This paper describes sexual reproduction of the colonial coral Cladocora caespitosa from Veliko jezero (Mljet Island) in the Adriatic Sea. Spawned orange eggs and white sperm bundles were observed on the coral bank of C. caespitosa two nights before the full moon (20 June 2005) coinciding with increasing water temperature and correlated with the lunar cycle. Spawning was observed during five nights, involving about 30% of the colonies from the coral bank. Different colonies on the bank released only one type of gamete during the reproductive period. The diameter of the sperm bundles ranged from 100 to 200 μm (average 163 μm; SD = 47.08), while the female gametes diameter ranged from 300 to 500 μm (average 416 μm; SD = 73.12). In order to determine competency of sexual reproduction and survival rate after fragmentation, the branching coral Acropora formosa was fragmented and fragments in three different sizes (ca. 5, 10 and 20 cm long) and three different stages of gametogenesis were transplanted on coral pavement. Their oocyte development and fecundity, as well as spawning were monitored for a 3-year period. The oocyte development was affected by both fragment size and by the developmental stage of oocytes when fragmented. In small fragments, the oocytes were resorbed while in large fragments they continued development. Oocytes in the early vitellogenic stage at the time of fragmentation were resorbed, whereas those in the late stage continued developing. Smaller fragments showed a lower survival rate and histological observations of their gonads revealed resorption of oocytes, suggesting that there was a trade-off of energy between reproduction and survival. Transplanted fragments often spawned one month earlier than the donor colonies in the first year, but spawning occurred in the same month as the donors or did not occur at all in the second year and none spawned in the third year. Broadcast spawning of gametes with planktonic development of larvae is the most common reproductive mode in tropical corals, and is generally thought to optimize the dispersal potential of larvae. To this end, many previous studies of coral larval dispersal have focused on the maximum time larvae can remain competent to settle and consequently how far they might disperse. However, dispersal ability of broadcast-spawned coral larvae will be linked, at least in part, to the minimum time to settlement competency as well as the length of the planktonic period—although estimates of minimum time to competency remain largely anecdotal, with few rigorous studies of the pre-competent period. To determine the minimum time to larval settlement in two species of broadcast-spawning coral ( Platygyra daedalea and Goniastrea favulus), we monitored larval settlement rates in aquaria every 6 h from the time larvae commenced swimming (i.e. were ciliated, fully developed larvae) for a period of approximately 10 days. For P. daedalea, peak settlement occurred between 60 and 66 h following fertilization (2.5 and 2.75 days), which is markedly earlier than the 4- to 6-day time period commonly cited as the minimum time before broadcast-spawned coral larvae are competent to settle. Surprisingly, it was also clear from our experimental results that settlement in P. daedalea occurred as a distinct pulse during the 60- to 66-h period, rather than continuously throughout the study period. G. favulus larvae also appear to be able to settle quickly (from 54 h following fertilization). We argue, on the basis of these short competency times and apparently rapid settlement, that dispersal in broadcast-spawning coral larvae may not be as great as has previously been assumed. Broadcast spawning by corals is a tightly synchronized process characterized by co-ordinated gamete release within 30-60 min time windows once per year. In shallow water corals, annual water temperature cycles set the month, lunar periodicity the day, and sunset time the hour of spawning. This tight temporal regulation is critical for achieving high fertilization rates in a pelagic environment. Given the differences in light and temperature that occur with depth and the importance of these parameters in regulating spawn timing, it has been unclear whether deeper coral can respond to the same environmental cues that regulate spawning behaviour in shallower coral. In this report, a remotely operated vehicle was used to monitor coral spawning activity at the Flower Garden Banks at depths from 33 to 45 m. Three species Montastraea cavernosa, Montastraea franksi, and Diploria strigosa were documented spawning within this depth range. All recorded spawning events were within the same temporal windows as shallower conspecifics. These data indicate that deep corals at this location either sense the same environmental parameters, despite local attenuation, or communicate with shallower colonies that can sense such spawning cues.
