The observations of external galaxies are projected to the 2D sky plane. Reconstructing the 3D intrinsic density distribution of a galaxy from the 2D image is challenging, especially for barred galaxies, but is a critical step for constructing galactic dynamical models. Here we present a method for deprojecting barred galaxies and we validate the method by testing against mock images created from an N-body simulation with a peanut-shaped bar. We decompose a galaxy image into a bulge (including a bar) and a disk. By subtracting the disk from the original image a barred bulge remains. We perform multi-Gaussian expansion (MGE) fit to each component, then we deproject them separately by considering the barred bulge is triaxial while the disk is axisymmetric. We restrict the barred bulge to be aligned in the disk plane and has a similar thickness to the disk in the outer regions. The 3D density distribution is thus constructed by combining the barred bulge and the disk. Our model can generally recover the 3D density distribution of disk and inner barred bulge regions, although not a perfect match to the peanut-shaped structure. By using the same initial conditions, we integrate the orbits in our model-inferred potential and the true potential by freezing the N-body simulation. We find that 85% of all these orbits have similar morphologies in these two potentials, and our model supports the orbits that generate a boxy/peanut-shaped structure and an elongated bar similar to these in the true potential., 15 pages, 15 figures. Despite the long escort by the ESA Rosetta mission, direct observations of a fully developed bow shock around 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko have not been reported. Expanding on our previous work on indirect observations of a shock, we model the large-scale features in cometary pickup ions, and compare the results with the ESA Rosetta Plasma Consortium Ion Composition Analyser ion spectrometer measurements over the pre-perihelion portion of the escort phase. Using our hybrid plasma simulation, an empirical, asymmetric outgassing model for 67P, and varied interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) clock angles, we model the evolution of the large-scale plasma environment. We find that the subsolar bow shock standoff distance is enhanced by asymmetric outgassing with a factor of 2 to 3, reaching up to $18\,000\, \rm {km}$ approaching perihelion. We find that distinct spectral features in simulated pickup ion distributions are present for simulations with shock-like structures, with the details of the spectral features depending on shock standoff distance, heliocentric distance, and IMF configuration. Asymmetric outgassing along with IMF clock angle is found to have a strong effect on the location of the spectral features, while the IMF clock angle causes no significant effect on the bow shock standoff distance. These dependences further complicate the interpretation of the ion observations made by Rosetta. Our data-model comparison shows that the large-scale cometary plasma environment can be probed by remote sensing the pickup ions, at least when the comet’s activity is comparable to that of 67P, and the solar wind parameters are known.

Vernazza, P., et al., Until recently, the 3D shape, and therefore density (when combining the volume estimate with available mass estimates), and surface topography of the vast majority of the largest (D ≥ 100 km) main-belt asteroids have remained poorly constrained. The improved capabilities of the SPHERE/ZIMPOL instrument have opened new doors into ground-based asteroid exploration. Aims. To constrain the formation and evolution of a representative sample of large asteroids, we conducted a high-angular-resolution imaging survey of 42 large main-belt asteroids with VLT/SPHERE/ZIMPOL. Our asteroid sample comprises 39 bodies with D ≥ 100 km and in particular most D ≥ 200 km main-belt asteroids (20/23). Furthermore, it nicely reflects the compositional diversity present in the main belt as the sampled bodies belong to the following taxonomic classes: A, B, C, Ch/Cgh, E/M/X, K, P/T, S, and V. Methods. The SPHERE/ZIMPOL images were first used to reconstruct the 3D shape of all targets with both the ADAM and MPCD reconstruction methods.We subsequently performed a detailed shape analysis and constrained the density of each target using available mass estimates including our own mass estimates in the case of multiple systems. Results. The analysis of the reconstructed shapes allowed us to identify two families of objects as a function of their diameters, namely spherical and elongated bodies. A difference in rotation period appears to be the main origin of this bimodality. In addition, all but one object (216 Kleopatra) are located along the Maclaurin sequence with large volatile-rich bodies being the closest to the latter. Our results further reveal that the primaries of most multiple systems possess a rotation period of shorter than 6 h and an elongated shape (c=a ≤ 0.65). Densities in our sample range from ∼1.3 g cm-3 (87 Sylvia) to ∼4.3 g cm-3 (22 Kalliope). Furthermore, the density distribution appears to be strongly bimodal with volatile-poor (P ≥ 2.7 g cm-3) and volatile-rich (P ≤ 2.2 g cm-3) bodies. Finally, our survey along with previous observations provides evidence in support of the possibility that some C-complex bodies could be intrinsically related to IDP-like P- and D-type asteroids, representing different layers of a same body (C: core; P/D: outer shell). The shape and internal structure of an asteroid is a result of its violent collisional history, and Asteroid 25143 Itokawa is an important target for investigating the internal structure and formation processes associated with rubble pile asteroids. The surface of Itokawa contains numerous boulders and is very rough, but 20% of the surface is covered with centimeter-sized gravels that are called ”smooth terrain”. These flat areas are associated with low areas of the gravitational potential and are considered to be formed by down-slope migration and accumulation of pebbles. We propose a method to constrain the interior density distribution of an asteroid by modeling the gravity field and fitting the smooth terrains to equi-potential surfaces. Density models that are composed of two distinct lobes best explain the data if the ”head” and ”body” have different densities of 2,450 kg/m3 and 1,930 kg/m3, respectively. Alternatively, the two lobes could have comparable densities if there was a compressed ”neck” of higher density between the two. Three layer models that treat the densities of the head, neck and body separately are largely unconstrained. However, when using an independent estimate of the center-of-mass/center-of-figure offset as determined from modeling the YORP spin-up of Itokawa, our models require the density of the head to be larger than the global average.

Inversion of gravity anomaly data can be an effective tool in reconstructing the geologic history of a region by segregating tectonic terranes with different physical properties. Recent advances in computational capabilities coupled with lithospheric-scale seismic experiments provide the opportunity to conduct 3D regional-scale, constrained inversions of gravity data using global optimization algorithms. Here, a method for inverting gravity anomaly data by combining a finite-element method based forward calculation with a simulated annealing algorithm is introduced. The method is applied to the southeastern Laurentia region, which is comprised of an amalgamation of crustal blocks spanning a tectonic history of over 1.5 Ga. The method better defines the gross crustal density distribution of the region, and proves to be efficient in spatially discriminating between the different tectonic terranes. The tectonic terranes fall within four distinct groups, based on the average crustal density, each of which seem to have undergone a distinct geologic history.

The Student Dust Counter (SDC) is an in-situ dust detector aboard the New Horizons spacecraft observing the distribution of interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) with mass > 10 − 12 g or approximately 0.5 µm in radius. New Horizons was launched on January 19th, 2006 and performed a fly-by of the Pluto system on July 14th, 2015. SDC has nearly continuously mapped the dust density distribution along the trajectory of New Horizons, and it continues to operate providing measurements of the IDP in the Edgeworth–Kuiper Belt (EKB). We present results of the dust density distribution from 1 to 38 AU and compare these measurements to existing theoretical models.

The emergence and development of a power-law tail (PLT) at the high-density end of the observed column-density distribution is thought to be indicative for advanced evolution of star-forming molecular clouds. As shown from many numerical simulations, it corresponds to a morphologically analogous evolution of the mass-density distribution (\rhopdf). The latter may display also a second, shallower PLT at the stage of collapse of the first formed protostellar cores. It is difficult to estimate the parameters of a possible second PLT due to resolution constraints. To address the issue, we extend the method for the extraction of single PLTs from arbitrary density distributions suggested by Veltchev et al.(2019) to detect a second PLT. The technique is elaborated through tests on an analytic \rhopdf{} and applied to a set of hydrodynamical high-resolution simulations of isothermal self-gravitating clouds. In all but one case two PLTs were detected -- the first slope is always steeper and the second one is typically $\partial \ln V /\ln \rho \sim -1$. These results are in a good agreement with numerical and theoretical works and do suggest that the technique extracts correctly double PLTs from smooth PDFs., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in AN

Nitrogen is one of the most abundant metals in the interstellar medium (ISM), and thus it constitutes an excellent test to study a variety of astrophysical environments, ranging from nova to active galactic nuclei. We present a detailed analysis of the gaseous component of the N K~edge using high-resolution {\it XMM-Newton} spectra of 12 Galactic and 40 extragalactic sources. For each source, we have estimated column densities for {\rm N}~{\sc i}, {\rm N}~{\sc ii}, {\rm N}~{\sc iii}, {\rm N}~{\sc v}, {\rm N}~{\sc vi} and {\rm N}~{\sc vii} ionic species, which trace the cold, warm and hot phases of the local Galactic interstellar medium. We have found that the cold-warm component column densities decrease with the Galactic latitude while the hot component does not. Moreover, the cold column density distribution is in good agreement with UV measurements. This is the first detailed analysis of the nitrogen K-edge absorption due to ISM using high-resolution X-ray spectra., 12 pages, 7 figures

We present observations of the $^3P_1$-$^3P_0$ fine-structure line of atomic carbon using the ASTE 10 m sub-mm telescope towards RCW38, the youngest super star cluster in the Milky Way. The detected [CI] emission is compared with the CO $J$ = 1-0 image cube presented in Fukui et al. (2016) which has an angular resolution of 40$^{\prime \prime}$ ($\sim$ 0.33 pc). The overall distribution of the [CI] emission in this cluster is similar to that of the $^{13}$CO emission. The optical depth of the [CI] emission was found to be $\tau$ = 0.1-0.6, suggesting mostly optically thin emission. An empirical conversion factor from the [CI] integrated intensity to the H$_2$ column density was estimated as $X_{\rm [CI]}$ = 6.3 $\times$ 10$^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$ K$^{-1}$ km$^{-1}$ s (for visual extinction: $A_V$ $\le$ 10 mag) and 1.4 $\times$ 10$^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$ K$^{-1}$ km$^{-1}$ s (for $A_V$ of 10-100 mag). The column density ratio of the [CI] to CO ($N_{\rm [CI]}/N_{\rm CO}$) was derived as $\sim$ 0.1 for $A_V$ of 10-100 mag, which is consistent with that of the Orion cloud presented in Ikeda et al. (2002). However, our results cover an $A_V$ regime of up to 100 mag, which is wider than the coverage found in Orion, which reach up to $\sim$ 60 mag. Such a high [CI]/CO ratio in a high $A_V$ region is difficult to be explained by the plane-parallel photodissociation region (PDR) model, which predicts that this ratio is close to 0 due to the heavy shielding of the ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Our results suggest that the molecular gas in this cluster is highly clumpy, allowing deep penetration of UV radiation even at averaged $A_V$ values of 100 mag. Cassini observations over the past ten years have revealed that Titan possesses a chemically complex ionosphere. In this study, we investigate the relative contributions of different ion species to the total ion escape on Titan, by dividing all ion species probed by the Cassini Ion Neutral Mass Spectrometer (INMS) into six groups according to their mass-to-charge ratios (M/Z). For the three lightest ion groups, with characteristic M/Z of 22, 41, and 52 daltons , the observed scale heights tend to be lower than the scale heights predicted by assuming diffusive equilibrium; for the three heavier groups, observed and predicted scale heights are in general agreement, implying that most ion escape from Titan is by relatively light species, with M/Z < 60 daltons. A diffusion model is constructed to describe the density distribution of each ion group in regions where the effect of ionospheric chemistry could be neglected. The data model comparison predicts an optimal total ion escape rate of 3.1×1024 s–1, of which more than 99% is contributed by relatively light ions with M/Z < 32 daltons.

Non-linear bias measurements require a great level of control of potential systematic effects in galaxy redshift surveys. Our goal is to demonstrate the viability of using Counts-in-Cells (CiC), a statistical measure of the galaxy distribution, as a competitive method to determine linear and higher-order galaxy bias and assess clustering systematics. We measure the galaxy bias by comparing the first four moments of the galaxy density distribution with those of the dark matter distribution. We use data from the MICE simulation to evaluate the performance of this method, and subsequently perform measurements on the public Science Verification (SV) data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We find that the linear bias obtained with CiC is consistent with measurements of the bias performed using galaxy-galaxy clustering, galaxy-galaxy lensing, CMB lensing, and shear+clustering measurements. Furthermore, we compute the projected (2D) non-linear bias using the expansion $\delta_{g} = \sum_{k=0}^{3} (b_{k}/k!) \delta^{k}$, finding a non-zero value for $b_2$ at the $3\sigma$ level. We also check a non-local bias model and show that the linear bias measurements are robust to the addition of new parameters. The role of pressure as a source of gravity in general relativity is considered. In homogeneous, anisotropic cosmological models, the anisotropic pressure components along different coordinate axes are included as terms in the equations determining the accelerations along these axes; in this sense, this situation is similar to how the mass density is included in these equations. A change in the pressure component along one of the coordinates leads to an anisotropic change in the accelerations along all three coordinates. However, the pressure components are not present in the equation determining the initial conditions. On the other hand, with an inhomogeneous matter density distribution, the mass density and pressure play fundamentally different roles as sources of gravity. The consequences of this are considered.

HCN(1$-$0) emission traces dense gas and correlates very strongly with star formation rates (SFRs) on scales from small Milky Way clouds to whole galaxies. The observed correlation offers strong constraints on the efficiency of star formation in dense gas, but quantitative interpretation of this constraint requires a mapping from HCN emission to gas mass and density. In this paper we provide the required calibration by postprocessing high-resolution simulations of dense, star-forming clouds to calculate their HCN emission ($L_{\rm HCN}$) and to determine how that emission is related to the underlying gas density distribution and star formation efficiency. We find that HCN emission traces gas with a luminosity-weighted mean number density of $0.8-1.7 \times 10^4\,{\rm cm}^{-3}$ and that HCN luminosity is related to mass of dense gas of $\gtrsim 10^4\,{\rm cm}^{-3}$ with a conversion factor of ${\alpha}_{\rm HCN} \approx 14\,\rm M_{\odot}/(K\,km\,s^{-1}\,{pc}^2)$. We also measure a new empirical relationship between the star formation rate per global mean freefall time (${\epsilon}_{ff}$) and the SFR$-$HCN relationship, ${\rm SFR}/L_{\rm HCN} = 5.73 \times 10^{-5}\,{\epsilon}^{1.32}_{\rm ff}\,\rm M_{\odot}\,{yr}^{-1}/(K\,km\,s^{-1}\,{pc}^2)$. The observed SFR$-$HCN correlation strongly constrains ${\epsilon}_{\rm ff} \approx 1\%$ with a factor of $\sim 2$ systematic uncertainty. The scatter in ${\epsilon}_{\rm ff}$ from cloud to cloud within the Milky Way is a factor of a few. We conclude that $L_{\rm HCN}$ is an effective tracer of dense gas and that the IR$-$HCN correlation is a very strong diagnostic of the microphysics of star formation in dense gas.

We explore the expected galaxy environments of CIV absorbers at z>5 using the Technicolor Dawn simulations. These simulations reproduce the observed history of reionization, the z~6 galaxy stellar mass function, the Ly$\alpha$ forest transmission at z>5, and the SiIV column density distribution (CDD) at z~5.5. Nonetheless, the CIV CDD remains underproduced. Comparison with observed CII/SiII equivalent width ratios and the CII line incidence suggests that a low carbon yield accounts for some, but not all, of the CIV discrepancy. Alternatively, a density-bounded escape scenario could harden the metagalactic ionizing background more dramatically even than binary stellar evolution, boosting the CIV CDD into near-agreement with observations. In this case galaxies ionize more efficiently and fewer are required to host a given high-ionization absorber. Absorbers' environments therefore constrain ionizing escape. Regardless of the escape scenario, galaxies correlate with CIV absorbers out to 300 proper kpc (pkpc). The correlation strengthens independently with galaxy luminosity and CIV column density. Around strong systems (log(N$_{\rm CIV}$/cm$^{-2}$)>14)), the overdensity of galaxies with M$_{\rm UV}$ 41.9 declines from 200-300 within 100 pkpc to 40-60 within 250 pkpc. The previously-suggested association between strong CIV absorbers and Ly$\alpha$ emitters at z>5 is not expected. It may arise if both populations inhabit large-scale voids, but for different reasons. Although most neighboring galaxies are too faint for HST, JWST will, with a single pointing, identify ~10 neighboring galaxies per strong CIV absorber at z > 5. Knowledge about the large-scale distribution of galaxies is far from complete in the Zone of Avoidance, which is mostly due to high interstellar extinction and to source confusion at lower Galactic latitudes. Past near-infrared (NIR) surveys, such as the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), have shown the power of probing large-scale structure at these latitudes. Our aim is to map the galaxy distribution across the Southern Galactic plane using the VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea Survey (VVV), which reach 2 to 4 magnitudes deeper than 2MASS. We used SExtractor + PSFEx to identify extended objects and to measure their sizes, the light concentration index, magnitudes, and colours. Morphological and colour constraints and visual inspection were used to confirm galaxies. We present the resulting VVV NIR Galaxy Catalogue of 5563 visually confirmed galaxies, of which only 45 were previously known. This is the largest catalogue of galaxies towards the Galactic plane, with 99% of these galaxies being new discoveries. We found that the galaxy density distribution closely resembled the distribution of low interstellar extinction of the existing NIR maps. We also present a description of the 185 2MASS extended sources observed in the region, of which 16% of these objects had no previous description, which we have now classified. We conclude that interstellar extinction and stellar density are the main limitations for the detection of background galaxies in the Zone of Avoidance. The projected density distribution of type ab RR Lyrae (RRab) stars was characterised from the innermost regions of the Milky Way to the halo, with the aim of placing constraints on the Galaxys evolution. The compiled sample (N_RRab = 64,850) stems from fundamental mode RR Lyrae variables identified by the VVV, OGLE, and Gaia surveys. The distribution is well fitted by three power laws over three radial intervals. In the innermost region (R < 2.2 deg) the distribution follows Sigma_RRab[1] propto R ^(-0.94 +- 0.051), while in the external region the distribution adheres to Sigma_RRab[2] propto R^(-1.50 +- 0.019) for 2.2 deg< R 18 %) of the central Galactic region. The radii containing half of the populations (half populations radii) are R_H=6.8 deg (0.99 kpc), R_H =4.2 deg (0.61 kpc), and R_H =11.9 deg (1.75 kpc) for the RRab stars, RC giants, and GCs, respectively. Finally, merely 1% of the stars have been actually discovered in the innermost region (R < 35 pc) out of the expected (based on our considerations) total number of RRab therein: N sim 1,562. That deficit will be substantially ameliorated with future space missions like the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (formerly WFIRST)., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures and 2 tables. Far ultraviolet observations of comets yield information about the energetic processes that dissociate the sublimated gases from their primitive surfaces. Understanding which emission processes are dominant, their effects on the observed cometary spectrum, and how to properly invert the spectrum back to composition of the presumably pristine surface ices of a comet nuclei are all critical components for proper interpretation and analysis of comets. The close approach of comet 46P/Wirtanen in 2018-2019 provided a unique opportunity to study the inner most parts of a cometary coma with the Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, rarely accessible with remote observations, at length scales (100's of km) and wavelengths (900-1430 Angstroms) previously probed only by the European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft. Our observations show a complex picture for the inner coma; atomic production rates for H and O that show water is the dominant source of both, an abundance of atomic sulfur that is difficult to explain with the lifetimes of common sulfur parent molecules, and a density distribution that is poorly fit with both Haser and vectorial models., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures. The obscuration observed in active galactic nuclei (AGN) is mainly caused by dust and gas distributed in a torus-like structure surrounding the supermassive black hole (SMBH). However, properties of the obscuring torus of the AGN in X-ray have not been fully investigated yet due to the lack of high-quality data and proper models. In this work, we perform a broadband X-ray spectral analysis of a large, unbiased sample of obscured AGN (with line-of-sight column density 23$\le$log(NH)$\le$24) in the nearby universe which has high-quality archival NuSTAR data. The source spectra are analyzed using the recently developed borus02 model, which enables us to accurately characterize the physical and geometrical properties of AGN obscuring tori. We also compare our results obtained from the unbiased Compton thin AGN with those of Compton-thick AGN. We find that Compton thin and Compton-thick AGN may possess similar tori, whose average column density is Compton thick (N$\rm _{H,tor,ave}$ $\sim$1.4$\times$10$^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$), but they are observed through different (under-dense or over-dense) regions of the tori. We also find that the obscuring torus medium is significantly inhomogeneous, with the torus average column densities significantly different from their line-of-sight column densities (for most of the sources in the sample). The average torus covering factor of sources in our unbiased sample is c$_f$=0.67, suggesting that the fraction of unobscured AGN is $\sim$33%. We develop a new method to measure the intrinsic line-of-sight column density distribution of AGN in the nearby universe, which we find the result is in good agreement with the constraints from recent population synthesis models., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, 7 tables; accepted by A&A

Traditionally, incorporating additional physics into existing cosmological simulations requires re-running the cosmological simulation code, which can be computationally expensive. We show that conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGANs) can be harnessed to predict how changing the underlying physics alters the simulation results. To illustrate this, we train a cGAN to learn the impact of dark matter annihilation feedback (DMAF) on the gas density distribution. The predicted gas density slices are visually difficult to distinguish from their real brethren and the peak counts differ by less than 10 per cent for all test samples (the average deviation is < 3 per cent). Finally, we invert the problem and show that cGANs are capable of endowing smooth density distributions with realistic substructure. The cGAN does however have difficulty generating new knots as well as creating/eliminating bubble-like structures. We conclude that trained cGANs can be an effective approach to provide mock samples of cosmological simulations incorporating DMAF physics from existing samples of standard cosmological simulations of the evolution of cosmic structure., 11 pages, 9 figures

Magnetic fields have been observed in galaxy clusters with strengths of the order of $\sim \mu$G. The non-thermal pressure exerted by magnetic fields also contributes to the total pressure in galaxy clusters and can in turn affect the estimates of the gas mass fraction, $f_{gas}$. In this paper, we have considered a central magnetic field strength of $5\mu$G, motivated by observations and simulations of galaxy clusters. The profile of the magnetic field has also been taken from the results obtained from simulations and observations. The role of magnetic field has been taken into account in inferring the gas density distribution through the hydrostatic equilibrium condition (HSE) by including the magnetic pressure. We have found that the resultant gas mass fraction is smaller with magnetic field as compared to that without magnetic field. However, this decrease is dependent on the strength and the profile of the magnetic field. We have also determined the total mass using the NFW profile to check for the dependency of $f_{gas}$ estimates on total mass estimators. From our analysis, we conclude that for the magnetic field strength that galaxy clusters seem to possess, the non-thermal pressure from magnetic fields has an impact of $\approx 1~\%$ on the gas mass fraction of galaxy clusters. Using a significantly enlarged \textit{Fermi}-LAT BL Lac objects (BL Lacs) sample, we construct the gamma-ray luminosity function (GLF) of BL Lacs, by the joint use of the space density distribution and source counts distribution. We use three well-studied forms of the GLF, i.e., the forms of pure density evolution (PDE), pure luminosity evolution (PLE) and luminosity-dependent density evolution (LDDE). The Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique is used to constrain model parameters. Our results suggest that LDDE model can give the best description for the BL Lac GLF. And the model shows that the BL Lacs with a harder GeV spectrum and a less luminosity evolve as strongly as FSRQs, and the evolution decreases as increasing luminosity. We also model the average photon spectra of BL Lacs with a double power laws model. Using this modeled spectra, BL Lacs contribute $ \sim 20\%$ of the total extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGB) at $E>100$ MeV, $\sim 100\%$ of the EGB at $E>50$ GeV, and the unresolved BL Lacs contribute $\sim 20 \%$ of the isotropic diffuse gamma-ray background (IGRB) at $E>100$ MeV. High-mass analogues of low-mass prestellar cores are searched for to constrain the models of high-mass star formation. Several high-mass cores, at various evolutionary stages, have been recently identified towards the massive star-forming region W43-MM1 and amongst them a high-mass prestellar core candidate. We aim to characterise the chemistry in this high-mass prestellar core candidate, referred to as W43-MM1 core #6, and its environment. Using ALMA high-spatial resolution data of W43-MM1, we have studied the molecular content of core #6 and a neighbouring high-mass protostellar core, referred to as #3, which is similar in size and mass to core #6. We first subtracted the continuum emission using a method based on the density distribution of the intensities on each pixel. Then, from the distribution of detected molecules, we identified the molecules centred on the prestellar core candidate (core #6) and those associated to shocks related to outflows and filament formation. Then we constrained the column densities and temperatures of the molecules detected towards the two cores. While core #3 appears to contain a hot core with a temperature of about 190 K, core #6 seems to have a lower temperature in the range from 20 K to 90 K from a rotational diagram analysis. We have considered different source sizes for core #6 and the comparison of the abundances of the detected molecules towards the core with various interstellar sources shows that it is compatible with a core of size 1000 au with $T = 20-90$ K or a core of size 500 au with $T \sim 80$ K. Core #6 of W43-MM1 remains one of the best high-mass prestellar core candidates even if we cannot exclude that it is at the very beginning of the protostellar phase of high-mass star formation., 18 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The most used method to calculate the coronal electron temperature [ $T_{\mathrm{e}} (r)$ ] from a coronal density distribution [ $n_{\mathrm{e}} (r)$ ] is the scale-height method (SHM). We introduce a novel method that is a generalization of a method introduced by Alfven (Ark. Mat. Astron. Fys. 27, 1, 1941) to calculate $T_{\mathrm{e}}(r)$ for a corona in hydrostatic equilibrium: the “HST” method. All of the methods discussed here require given electron-density distributions [ $n_{\mathrm{e}} (r)$ ] which can be derived from white-light (WL) eclipse observations. The new “DYN” method determines the unique solution of $T_{\mathrm{e}}(r)$ for which $T_{\mathrm{e}}(r \rightarrow \infty) \rightarrow 0$ when the solar corona expands radially as realized in hydrodynamical solar-wind models. The applications of the SHM method and DYN method give comparable distributions for $T_{\mathrm{e}}(r)$ . Both have a maximum [ $T_{\max}$ ] whose value ranges between 1 – 3 MK. However, the peak of temperature is located at a different altitude in both cases. Close to the Sun where the expansion velocity is subsonic ( $r < 1.3\,\mathrm{R}_{\odot}$ ) the DYN method gives the same results as the HST method. The effects of the other free parameters on the DYN temperature distribution are presented in the last part of this study. Our DYN method is a new tool to evaluate the range of altitudes where the heating rate is maximum in the solar corona when the electron-density distribution is obtained from WL coronal observations.

We investigate the role of environment on radio galaxy properties by constructing a sample of large ($\gtrsim100$~kpc), nearby ($z, 18 pages, 31 figures, 1 table; accepted in MNRAS

Archival WFC3/UVIS imaging of Arp 299 (NGC 3690E + NGC 3690W) is retrieved to investigate the young massive cluster (YMC) population of this ongoing merger. We extract 2182 cluster candidates, including 1323 high confidence photometric sources. Multiband photometry is matched with Yggdrasil models to estimate the age, mass, and extinction of each cluster. A Schechter fit of the truncated cluster mass function results in a characteristic mass ${\rm M_{*} = 1.6 \times 10^6 M_{\odot}}$. Our results confirm that intensely star-forming galaxies such as Arp 299 host more massive clusters than quiescent dwarf and normal spirals. In the case of NGC 3690E, we find that the cluster masses decrease with an increasing galactocentric radius likely due to the gas density distribution. On the other hand, the fitted age distributions of a mass-limited sample suggest that YMCs of the western component undergo stronger disruption than those hosted by the eastern galaxy. This is in agreement with the properties of the underlying cluster luminosity functions: a clear truncation at high luminosities with slopes generally shallower by $\sim 0.3$ dex than the ones of the NGC 3690E. Finally, the derived cluster formation efficiency, $\Gamma \sim 19$ percent, indicates that Arp 299 has $\sim 3-5$ times more star formation happening in bound clusters compared to the cases of gas-poor spirals like NGC 2997 and NGC 4395. The merger generally follows the $\Gamma - $ star formation rate density relation from the literature. The YMC photometric study of Arp 299 thus reveals that both formation and disruption mechanisms of the star cluster population are most likely environment-dependent., Comment: 27 pages, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Deposits of submarine turbidity currents, turbidites, commonly exhibit upward‐fining grain size profiles reflecting deposition under waning flow conditions. However, more complex grading patterns such as multiple cycles of inverse‐to‐normal grading are also seen and interpreted as recording deposition under cycles of waxing and waning flow. Such flows are termed multipulsed turbidity currents, and their deposits pulsed or multipulsed turbidites. Pulsing may arise at flow initiation, or following downstream flow combination. Prior work has shown that individual pulses within multipulsed flows are advected forward and merge, such that complex longitudinal velocity profiles eventually become monotonically varying, although transition length scales in natural settings could not be predicted. Here we detail the first high frequency spatial (vertical, streamwise) and temporal measurements of flow velocity and density distribution in multipulsed gravity current experiments. The data support both a process explanation of pulse merging and a phase‐space analysis of transition length scales; in prototype systems, the point of merging corresponds to the transition in any deposit from multipulsed to normally graded turbidites. The scaling analysis is limited to quasi‐horizontal natural settings in which multipulsed flows are generated by sequences of relatively short sediment failures (10 km) sequences of breaches or where pulsing arises from combination at confluences of single‐pulsed flows, such flows may be responsible for the pulsing signatures seen in some distal turbidites, >100 km from source.

We present the detection of the average H$_2$ absorption signal in the overall population of neutral gas absorption systems at $z\sim 3$ using composite absorption spectra built from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-III damped Lyman-$\alpha$ catalogue. We present a new technique to directly measure the H$_2$ column density distribution function $f_{\rm H_2}(N)$ from the average H$_2$ absorption signal. Assuming a power-law column density distribution, we obtain a slope $\beta = -1.29 \pm 0.06(\rm stat) \pm 0.10 (\rm sys)$ and an incidence rate of strong H$_2$ absorptions (with $N$(H$_2)\gtrsim 10^{18}\,$cm$^{-2}$) to be $4.0 \pm 0.5(\rm stat) \pm 1.0 (\rm sys)\,\%$ in H$\,$I absorption systems with $N($H$\,$I)$\ge 10^{20}\,$cm$^{-2}$. Assuming the same inflexion point where $f_{\rm H_2}(N)$ steepens as at $z=0$, we estimate that the cosmological density of H$_2$ in the column density range $\log N(\rm H_2)$(cm$^{-2})= 18-22$ is $\sim 15\%$ of the total. We find one order of magnitude higher H$_2$ incident rate in a sub-sample of extremely strong DLAs ($\log N($H$\,$I)(cm$^{-2}) \ge 21.7$), which, together with the the derived shape of $f_{\rm H_2}(N)$, suggests that the typical H$\,$I-H$_2$ transition column density in DLAs is $\log N({\rm H})$(cm$^{-2}) \gtrsim 22.3$ in agreement with theoretical expectations for the average (low) metallicity of DLAs at high-$z$., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS letters

The evolution of perturbations in a two-layer spherical shell and a plane layer with a two-step density distribution has been simulated numerically. The clumps formed by instability are shown to have qualitatively different structures, depending on the ratio of the densities in the inner and outer layers of the shell. Inhomogeneities bordered by a dense gas are formed in shells with an outwardly decreasing density. If, however, a denser gas is in the outer layer, then cores surrounded by a more rarefied material appear. These results are used to analyze the expansion of the HII region RCW 82. Since the inhomogeneities observed in the 13CO emission in the outer parts of this region have sharply delineated boundaries, our calculations argue for the model of the expansion of a shell with an outwardly decreasing density. The interaction of an accelerating shell with clumps in front of it has also been investigated. The deformations of a clump during its penetration into the shell and the formation of a groove in the shell gradually fillingwith a cold gas have been revealed. Thereafter, the shell material collapses to form a cumulative jet. As applied to the HII region RCW 82, we conclude that the existence of jets is possible if there are inhomogeneities with a scale of ∼1018 cm in the interstellar medium. The lack of data on such jet flows at the boundary of this region is an additional argument for the model where the inhomogeneous structure of the boundaries is attributable to the development of Rayleigh-Taylor instability.

We determine the total dynamical matter density in the solar neighbourhood using the second Gaia data release (DR2). The dynamical matter density distribution is inferred in a framework of a Bayesian hierarchical model, which accounts for position and velocity of all individual stars, as well as the full error covariance matrix of astrometric observables, in a joint fit of the vertical velocity distribution and stellar number density distribution. This was done for eight separate data samples, with different cuts in observed absolute magnitude, each containing about 25,000 stars. The model for the total matter density does not rely on any underlying baryonic model, although we assumed that it is symmetrical, smooth, and monotonically decreasing with distance from the mid-plane. We infer a density distribution which is strongly peaked in the region close to the Galactic plane ($\lesssim 60$ pc), for all eight stellar samples. Assuming a baryonic model and a dark matter halo of constant density, this corresponds to a surplus surface density of approximately 5--9 M$_\odot$/pc$^2$. For the Sun's position and vertical velocity with respect to the Galactic plane, we infer $Z_\odot = 4.76\pm 2.27$ pc and $W_\odot = 7.24\pm 0.19$ km/s. These results suggest a surplus of matter close to the Galactic plane, possibly explained by an underestimated density of cold gas. The OSIRIS camera onboard Rosetta measured the phase function of both the coma dust and the nucleus. The two functions have a very different slope versus the phase angle. Here, we show that the nucleus phase function should be adopted to convert the brightness to the size of dust particles larger than 2.5 mm only. This makes the dust bursts observed close to Rosetta by OSIRIS, occurring about every hour, consistent with the fragmentation on impact with Rosetta of parent particles, whose flux agrees with the dust flux observed by GIADA. OSIRIS also measured the antisunward acceleration of the fragments, thus providing the first direct measurement of the solar radiation force acting on the dust fragments and thus of their bulk density, excluding any measurable rocket effect by the ice sublimation from the dust. The obtained particle density distribution has a peak matching the bulk density of most COSIMA particles, and represents a subset of the density distribution measured by GIADA. The star-forming ability of a molecular cloud depends on the fraction of gas it can cycle into the dense-phase. Consequently, one of the crucial questions in reconciling star-formation in clouds is to understand the factors that control this process. While it is widely accepted that the variation in ambient conditions can alter significantly the ability of a cloud to spawn stars, the observed variation in the star-formation rate in nearby clouds that experience similar ambient conditions, presents an interesting question. In this work we attempted to reconcile this variation within the paradigm of colliding flows. To this end we develop self-gravitating, hydrodynamic realisations of identical flows, but allowed to collide off-centre. Typical observational diagnostics such as the gas-velocity dispersion, the fraction of dense-gas, the column density distribution ({\small N-PDF}), the distribution of gas mass as a function of $K$-band extinction and the strength of compressional/solenoidal modes in the post-collision cloud were deduced for different choices of the impact parameter of collision. We find that a strongly sheared cloud is terribly inefficient in cycling gas into the dense phase and that such a cloud can possibly reconcile the sluggish nature of star-formation reported for some clouds. Within the paradigm of cloud-formation via colliding flows this is possible in case of flows colliding with a relatively large impact parameter. Recent high angular resolution observations of protoplanetary disks at different wavelengths have revealed several kinds of structures, including multiple bright and dark rings. Embedded planets are the most used explanation for such structures, but there are alternative models capable of shaping the dust in rings as it has been observed. We assume a disk around a Herbig star and investigate the effect that ice lines have on the dust evolution, following the growth, fragmentation, and dynamics of multiple dust size particles, covering from 1 $\mu$m to 2 m sized objects. We use simplified prescriptions of the fragmentation velocity threshold, which is assumed to change radially at the location of one, two, or three ice lines. We assume changes at the radial location of main volatiles, specifically H$_2$O, CO$_2$, and NH$_3$. Radiative transfer calculations are done using the resulting dust density distributions in order to compare with current multiwavelength observations. We find that the structures in the dust density profiles and radial intensities at different wavelengths strongly depend on the disk viscosity. A clear gap of emission can be formed between ice lines and be surrounded by ring-like structures, in particular between the H$_2$O and CO$_2$ (or CO). The gaps are expected to be shallower and narrower at millimeter emission than at near-infrared, opposite to model predictions of particle trapping. In our models, the total gas surface density is not expected to show strong variations, in contrast to other gap-forming scenarios such as embedded giant planets or radial variations of the disk viscosity., Comment: Minor changes after language edition. We investigated the evolution of a massive galactic nucleus hosting a super-massive black hole (SMBH) with mass $M_\mathrm{SMBH}=10^8 \mathrm{M}_\odot$ surrounded by a population of 42 heavy star clusters (GCs). Using direct $N$-body modelling, we show here that the assembly of an NSC through GCs orbital decay and merger is efficiently inhibited by the tidal forces exerted from the SMBH. The GCs mass loss induced by tidal forces causes a significant modification of their mass function, leading to a population of low-mass ($, 15 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables. The oxygen density in the central zone of the ejecta of nine type IIP supernovae (SNe IIP) at the nebular phase has been determined from the [O I] 6300, 6364 A doublet lines. In combination with the known estimates for two supernovae, the results of measurements show that the oxygen densities on day 300 are distributed in a narrow range, (2.3 ± 1) × 109 cm−3. This result does not depend on the distance, extinction, and model assumptions. Analysis of the density distribution found leads to the conclusion that the SN IIP explosion energy increases with stellar mass.

The recent HIWIND (High-Altitude Interferometer Wind Observations) balloon measurements have revealed persistent equatorward winds in the dayside thermosphere during geomagnetically quiet times. Although this result does not agree with some current thermospheric density models, it is consistent with an earlier thermospheric density model (M1975) which includes the energy input through the magnetospheric dayside cusps during geomagnetically quiet times. We show the thermospheric density distribution with and without the magnetospheric input to illustrate the effect of the density gradient on the winds at high latitudes. We review the early history of the development of our understanding of the energy input to the high-latitude thermosphere. Future HIWIND measurements can add to our understanding and lead to improved models of thermospheric densities and winds.

Long-term ring current decay following a magnetic storm is mainly due to charge exchange collisions of ring current ions with geocoronal neutral atoms forming energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) that leave the ring current system. Therefore, the density distribution of these cold and tenuous neutral hydrogen atoms plays a key role in the ring current recovery. TWINS ENA images provide a direct measurement of these ENA losses and therefore insight into the dynamics of the ring current decay through interactions with the geocorona. To assess the influence of geocoronal neutrals on ring current decay, we compare the predicted ENA emission using five different geocoronal models and the HEIDI ring current model to simulate the July 22, 2009 storm. We show that for high energy H + ( ≥ 100 keV ) , all geocoronal models predict similar decay rates of the ring current ions. However, for low energy ions ( ≤ 100 keV ), the decay rate varies significantly depending on the geocoronal density model. Comparison with TWINS ENA images shows that the location of the peak ENA enhancements is highly dependent on the distribution of geocoronal hydrogen density. The ring current topology depends greatly on the hydrogen model used, therefore knowing the H-distribution is very important in understanding how the ring current recovers following a magnetic storm.

In this first paper in the SUPER GOODS series on powerfully star-forming galaxies in the two GOODS fields, we present a deep SCUBA-2 survey of the GOODS-N at both 850 and 450 micron (central rms noise of 0.28 mJy and 2.6 mJy, respectively). In the central region the 850 micron observations cover the GOODS-N to near the confusion limit of ~1.65 mJy, while over a wider 450 arcmin^2 region---well complemented by Herschel far-infrared imaging---they have a median 4-sigma limit of 3.5 mJy. We present >4-sigma catalogs of 186 850 micron and 31 450 micron selected sources. We use interferometric observations from the SMA and the VLA to obtain precise positions for 114 SCUBA-2 sources (28 from the SMA, all of which are also VLA sources). We present new spectroscopic redshifts and include all existing spectroscopic or photometric redshifts. We also compare redshifts estimated using the 20 cm to 850 micron and the 250 micron to 850 micron flux ratios. We show that the redshift distribution increases with increasing flux, and we parameterize the dependence. We compute the star formation history and the star formation rate (SFR) density distribution functions in various redshift intervals, finding that they reach a peak at z=2-3 before dropping to higher redshifts. We show that the number density per unit volume of SFR>500 solar mass per year galaxies measured from the SCUBA-2 sample does not change much relative to that of lower SFR galaxies from UV selected samples over z=2-5, suggesting that, apart from changes in the normalization, the shape in the number density as a function of SFR is invariant over this redshift interval., Accepted for publication in ApJ. 38 pages, 26 figures

In this paper, we propose a new integral representation for reconstructing the surface density of matter in the flat discs of spiral galaxies. The surface density is expressed through the observed rotation velocity curves of visible matter in the discs of spiral galaxies. The new integral representation is not based on the quadrature of special functions. The solution that is found is used to process and analyse observational data from several spiral galaxies. The new integral representation can be used to more accurately estimate the amount of dark matter in spiral galaxies.

Recent wide-field surveys discovered new types of peculiar optical transients that showed diverse behaviors of the evolution of photospheric properties. We develop a general theory of homologous explosions with constant opacity, paying special attention on the evolution of the photospheric radius $R_{\rm ph}$. We find that regardless of the density distribution profile, $R_{\rm ph}$ always increases early on and decreases at late times. This result does not depend on the radiation and cooling processes inside the ejecta.The general rising/falling behavior of $R_{\rm ph}$ can be used to quickly diagnose whether the source originates from a supernova-like explosion. The shape of the $R_{\rm ph}$ evolution curve depends on the density profile, so the observations may be used to directly diagnose the density profile as well as the temperature profile of the ejecta. All the well-monitored supernovae show such a $R_{\rm ph}$ rising/falling behavior, which is consistent with our theory. The recently discovered peculiar transient AT2018cow showed a continuous decay of $R_{\rm ph}$, which is disfavored to be of a supernova-like explosion origin. Recent studies using 21 cm HI line and $^{13}$CO line observations in the inner part of the Galaxy have resulted in new distances for 30 Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs). 15 of those remnants have observed X-ray spectra, for which shocked-gas temperatures and emission measures are measured. Here we apply spherically symmetric SNR evolution models to these 15 remnants to obtain estimates for ages, explosion energies, circum-stellar medium densities and profiles (uniform or wind-type).From the distribution of ages we obtain a supernova birth rate and estimate incompleteness. The energies and densities can be well fit with log-normal distributions. The distribution of explosion energies is very similar to that of SNRs in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), suggesting SN explosions in the LMC and in the Galaxy are very similar. The density distribution has higher mean density for Galactic SNRs than for LMC SNRs, by a factor $\sim$2.5., Comment: 51 pages, 3 figures

How and when the mass distribution of stars in the Galaxy is set is one of the main issues of modern astronomy. Here we present a statistical study of mass and density distributions of infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) and fragments within them. These regions are pristine molecular gas structures and progenitors of stars and so provide insights into the initial conditions of star formation. This study makes use of a IRDC catalogue (Peretto & Fuller 2009), the largest sample of IRDC column density maps to date, containing a total of ~11,000 IRDCs with column densities exceeding N_{H2} = 1 X10^{22} cm^{-2} and over 50,000 single peaked IRDC fragments. The large number of objects constitutes an important strength of this study, allowing detailed analysis of the completeness of the sample and so statistically robust conclusions. Using a statistical approach to assigning distances to clouds, the mass and density distributions of the clouds and the fragments within them are constructed. The mass distributions show a steepening of the slope when switching from IRDCs to fragments, in agreement with previous results of similar structures. IRDCs and fragments are divided into unbound/bound objects by assuming Larson's relation and calculating their virial parameter. IRDCs are mostly gravitationally bound, while a significant fraction of the fragments are not. The density distribution of gravitationally unbound fragments shows a steep characteristic slope. International audience; The present paper deals with the application of the classical theory of equilibrium figures of two rotating liquid masses to the case where bodies exhibit a radially stratified internal density distribution so that they can be considered as inhomogeneous bodies. The derived ellipsoidal shape solutions are applied to five real systems of equal-sized synchronous asteroids. Furthermore, internal inhomogeneity puts strong constraints on the surface grain density. A satisfactory model fit is achieved with internal densities of asteroids steadily increasing outwards. In particular, from such an approach we derived grain densities of the considered systems in agreement with their mineralogical composition inferred from reflectance spectroscopy. According to this new approach, 4492 Debussy, presently of unknown spectral type, is predicted to appear as a C-type object with a grain density on the order of 2 g/cm 3.

The interpretation of planetary anomalies in the gravity fields of Mars and the Moon in relationship to their inhomogeneous internal structure is considered. The Martian and lunar gravity field models up to order and degree 20, three-layer (crust, mantle, core) model parameters, and planetary parameters have been used as input data. Models of the three-dimensional density distribution have been constructed for Mars and the Moon. The maps of horizontal density inhomogeneities at depths of 50, 100, and 1700 km for Mars and 60, 100, and 1400 km for the Moon are interpreted.
