Context. Ruprecht 147 is the oldest (2.5 Gyr) open cluster in the solar vicinity (< 300 pc), making it an important target for stellar evolution studies and exoplanet searches. Aims. Derive a census of members and the luminosity, mass, and spatial distributions of the cluster. Methods. We use an astro-photometric data set including all available information from the literature together with our own observations. We process the data with an updated version of an existent membership selection methodology. Results. We identify 259 high-probability candidate members, including 58 previously unreported. All these candidates cover the luminosity interval between G > 6 mag to i< 21 mag. The cluster luminosity and mass distributions are derived with an unprecedented level of details allowing us to recognize, among other features, the Wielen dip. The mass distribution in the low-mass regime drops sharply at 0.4 $M_{\odot}$ even though our data are sensitive to stellar masses down to 0.1 $M_{\odot}$, suggesting that most very-low-mass members left the cluster as the result of its dynamical evolution. In addition, the cluster is highly elongated (ellipticity $\sim$ 0.5) towards the galactic plane, and mass segregated. Conclusions. Our combined Gaia+DANCe data set allows us to obtain an extended list of cluster candidate members, and to derive luminosity, mass and projected spatial distributions in the oldest open cluster of the solar vicinity., 25 pages

Context. The study of star formation is extremely challenging, due to the lack of complete and clean samples of young nearby clusters and star-forming regions. The recent Gaia DR2 catalogue complemented with the deep ground-based COSMIC DANCe catalogue offers a new database of unprecedented accuracy to revisit the membership of clusters and star-forming regions. The 30 Myr open cluster IC 4665 is one of the few well-known clusters of this age and it is an excellent target where evolutionary models can be tested and planetary formation studied. Aims. We provide a comprehensive membership analysis of IC 4665 and study the following properties: empirical isochrones, distance, magnitude distribution, present-day system mass function, and spatial distribution. Methods. We used the Gaia DR2 catalogue together with the DANCe catalogue to look for members via a probabilistic model of the distribution of the observable quantities in both the cluster and background populations. Results. We obtained a final list of 819 candidate members that cover a 12.4 magnitude range (7 < J < 19.4). We find that 50% are new candidates, and we estimate a conservative contamination rate of 20%. This unique sample of members allows us to obtain a present-day system mass function in the range of 0.02–6 M⊙, which reveals a number of details not seen in previous studies. In addition, we find that a spherically symmetric spatial distribution is favoured by our final list of members for this young open cluster. Conclusions. Our membership analysis represents a significant increase in the quantity and quality (low contamination) with respect to previous studies. It offers an excellent opportunity to revisit other fundamental parameters such as age.

We present a uniform mid-infrared imaging and photometric survey of 36 young, nearby, star-forming clusters and groups using {\it Spitzer} IRAC and MIPS. We have confidently identified and classified 2548 young stellar objects using recently established mid-infrared color-based methods. We have devised and applied a new algorithm for the isolation of local surface density enhancements from point source distributions, enabling us to extract the overdense cores of the observed star forming regions for further analysis. We have compiled several basic structural measurements of these cluster cores from the data, such as mean surface densities of sources, cluster core radii, and aspect ratios, in order to characterize the ranges for these quantities. We find that a typical cluster core is 0.39 pc in radius, has 26 members with infrared excess in a ratio of Class II to Class I sources of 3.7, is embedded in a $A_K$=0.8 mag cloud clump, and has a surface density of 60 pc$^{-2}$. We examine the nearest neighbor distances among the YSOs in several ways, demonstrating similarity in the spacings between Class II and Class I sources but large member clusters appear more dense than smaller clusters. We demonstrate that near-uniform source spacings in cluster cores are common, suggesting that simple Jeans fragmentation of parsec-scale cloud clumps may be the dominant process governing star formation in nearby clusters and groups. We present a census of circumstellar disks in the Chamaeleon I star-forming region. Using the Infrared Array Camera and the Multiband Imaging Photometer onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope, we have obtained images of Chamaeleon I at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0, and 24 um. To search for new disk-bearing members of the cluster, we have performed spectroscopy on objects that have red colors in these data. Through this work, we have discovered four new members of Chamaeleon I with spectral types of M4, M6, M7.5, and L0. The first three objects are highly embedded (A_J~5) and reside near known protostars, indicating that they may be among the youngest low-mass sources in the cluster (1 M_sun is significantly higher in Chamaeleon I than in IC 348 (65% vs. 20%), indicating longer disk lifetimes in Chamaeleon I for this mass range. Thus, low-density star-forming regions like Chamaeleon I may offer more time for planet formation around solar-type stars than denser clusters.

We report the discovery of a nearby, embedded cluster of young stellar objects, associated filamentary infrared dark cloud, and 4.5 micron shock emission knots from outflows detected in Spitzer/IRAC mid-infrared imaging of the Serpens-Aquila Rift obtained as part of the Spitzer Gould Belt Legacy Survey. We also present radial velocity measurements of the region from molecular line observations obtained with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) that suggest the cluster is co-moving with the Serpens Main embedded cluster 3 degrees to the north. We therefore assign it the same distance, 260 pc. The core of the new cluster, which we call Serpens South, is composed of an unusually large fraction of protostars (77%) at high mean surface density (>430 pc^-2) and short median nearest neighbor spacing (3700 AU). Furlan, E. et. al., We present key results from the Herschel Orion Protostar Survey: spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and model fits of 330 young stellar objects, predominantly protostars, in the Orion molecular clouds. This is the largest sample of protostars studied in a single, nearby star formation complex. With near-infrared photometry from 2MASS, mid and far-infrared data from Spitzer and Herschel, and submillimeter photometry from APEX, our SEDs cover 1.2-870 mu m and sample the peak of the protostellar envelope emission at similar to 100 mu m. Using mid-IR spectral indices and bolometric temperatures, we classify our sample into 92 Class 0 protostars, 125 Class I protostars, 102 flat spectrum sources, and 11 Class II pre-main-sequence stars. We implement a simple protostellar model (including a disk in an infalling envelope with outflow cavities) to generate a grid of 30,400 model SEDs and use it to determine the best-fit model parameters for each protostar. We argue that far-IR data are essential for accurate constraints on protostellar envelope properties. We find that most protostars, and in particular the flat-spectrum sources, are well fit. The median envelope density and median inclination angle decrease from Class 0 to Class I to flat spectrum protostars, despite the broad range in best-fit parameters in each of the three categories. We also discuss degeneracies in our model parameters. Using the Infrared Array Camera and the Multiband Imaging Photometer aboard the {\it Spitzer Space Telescope}, we have obtained images of the Lupus 3 star-forming cloud at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0, and 24 \micron. We present photometry in these bands for the 41 previously known members that are within our images. In addition, we have identified 19 possible new members of the cloud based on red 3.6-8.0 \micron colors that are indicative of circumstellar disks. We have performed optical spectroscopy on 6 of these candidates, all of which are confirmed as young low-mass members of Lupus 3. The spectral types of these new members range from M4.75 to M8, corresponding to masses of 0.2-0.03 $M_\odot$ for ages of $\sim1$ Myr according to theoretical evolutionary models. We also present optical spectroscopy of a candidate disk-bearing object in the vicinity of the Lupus 1 cloud, 2M 1541-3345, which Jayawardhana & Ivanov recently classified as a young brown dwarf ($M\sim0.03$ $M_\odot$) with a spectral type of M8. In contrast to their results, we measure an earlier spectral type of M5.75$\pm$0.25 for this object, indicating that it is probably a low-mass star ($M\sim0.1$ $M_\odot$). In fact, according to its gravity-sensitive absorption lines and its luminosity, 2M 1541-3345 is older than members of the Lupus clouds ($��\sim1$ Myr) and instead is probably a more evolved pre-main-sequence star that is not directly related to the current generation of star formation in Lupus., 18 pages, 3 tables, 6 figures

We present observations of six late-type members of the young cluster IC 348 detected at 24 μm with the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS). At least four of the objects are probably substellar. Combining these data with ground-based optical and near-infrared photometry and complementary observations with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC), we have modeled the spectral energy distributions using detailed models of irradiated accretion disks. We are able to fit the observations with models using a range of maximum grain sizes from ISM-type dust to grains as large as 1 mm. Two objects show a lack of excess emission at wavelengths shortward of 5.8-8 μm but significant excess at longer wavelengths, indicative of large optically thin or evacuated inner holes. Our models indicate an inner hole of radius ~0.5-0.9 AU for the brown dwarf L316; this is the first brown dwarf with evidence for an AU-scale inner disk hole. We examine several possible mechanisms for the inner disk clearing in this case, including photoevaporation and planet formation.

We compare the infrared colors predicted by theoretical models of protostellar envelopes and protoplanetary disks with initial observations of young stellar objects made with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Disk and envelope models characterized by infall and/or accretion rates found in previous studies can quantitatively account for the range of IRAC colors found in four young embedded clusters: S140, S171, NGC 7129, and Cep C. The IRAC color-color diagram ([3.6]� [4.5] vs. [5.8]� [8.0]) can be used to help distinguish between young stars with only disk emission and protostars with circumstellar envelopes. We present the Early Release Observations of the HH 46/47 system and HH 46 IRS 1 source, taken with the three instruments aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. The optically invisible southwest lobe, driven by the HH 47C bow shock, is revealed in full detail by the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) images and displays a 'loop'-like morphology. Both of the mid-infrared outflow lobes are narrower than those of CO flow. We believe that the combination of emission by H2 rotational lines [S(11)-S(4)] and some atomic lines, which fall within the IRAC passbands, are responsible for the bulk of the observed emission, although contributions from the 3.3, 6.2, and 7.7 micron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission bands cannot be ruled out. Weak spectral features corresponding to these emitters are present in the Infrared Spectrograph spectrum of the HH 47A bow shock. The spectrum of HH 46 IRS 1 shows remarkable similarities to those of high-mass protostars, which include the presence of H2O, CO2, CH4, and possibly NH3, CH3OH, and ices. The high ice abundances and the lack of signs of thermal processing indicate that these ices in the envelope are well shielded from the powerful outflow and its cavity. Emission from the Bok globule at 24 micron is detected and displays a similar structure to that observed at 8 micron.

We analyzed data from the first year of a survey for Near Earth Objects (NEOs) that we are carrying out with the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) on the 4-meter Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. We implanted synthetic NEOs into the data stream to derive our nightly detection efficiency as a function of magnitude and rate of motion. Using these measured efficiencies and the Solar System absolute magnitudes derived by the Minor Planet Center for the 1377 measurements of 235 unique NEOs detected, we directly derive, for the first time from a single observational data set, the NEO size distribution from 1 km down to 10 meters. We find that there are 10^6.6 NEOs larger than 10 meters. This result implies a factor of ten fewer small NEOs than some previous results, though our derived size distribution is in good agreement with several other estimates., AJ in press

We used archival Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared data to search for young stellar objects (YSOs) in the immediate vicinity of two bright-rimmed clouds, BRC 27 (part of CMa R1) and BRC 34 (part of the IC 1396 complex). These regions both appear to be actively forming young stars, perhaps triggered by the proximate OB stars. In BRC 27, we find clear infrared excesses around 22 of the 26 YSOs or YSO candidates identified in the literature, and identify 16 new YSO candidates that appear to have IR excesses. In BRC 34, the one literature-identified YSO has an IR excess, and we suggest 13 new YSO candidates in this region, including a new Class I object. Considering the entire ensemble, both BRCs are likely of comparable ages, within the uncertainties of small number statistics and without spectroscopy to confirm or refute the YSO candidates. We present Spitzer IRAC and MIPS observations of the star-forming region containing intermediate-mass young stellar object (YSO) AFGL 490. We supplement these data with near-IR 2MASS photometry and with deep SQIID observations off the central high extinction region. We have more than doubled the known membership of this region to 57 Class I and 303 Class II YSOs via the combined 1-24 um photometric catalog derived from these data. We construct and analyze the minimum spanning tree of their projected positions, isolating one locally over-dense cluster core containing 219 YSOs (60.8% of the region's members). We find this cluster core to be larger yet less dense than similarly analyzed clusters. Although the structure of this cluster core appears irregular, we demonstrate that the parsec-scale surface densities of both YSOs and gas are correlated with a power law slope of 2.8, as found for other similarly analyzed nearby molecular clouds. We also explore the mass segregation implications of AFGL 490's offset from the center of its core, finding that it has no apparent preferential central position relative to the low-mass members., Comment: 44 pages, 13 figures, accepted to ApJ

We report the discovery and characterization of a power law correlation between the local surface densities of Spitzer-identified, dusty young stellar objects and the column density of gas (as traced by near-IR extinction) in eight molecular clouds within 1 kpc and with 100 or more known YSOs. This correlation, which appears in data smoothed over size scales of ~1 pc, varies in quality from cloud to cloud; those clouds with tight correlations, MonR2 and Ophiuchus, are fit with power laws of slope 2.67 and 1.87, respectively. The spread in the correlation is attributed primarily to local gas disruption by stars that formed there or to the presence of very young sub-regions at the onset of star formation. We explore the ratio of the number of Class II to Class I sources, a proxy for the star formation age of a region, as a function of gas column density; this analysis reveals a declining Class II to Class I ratio with increasing column density. We show that the observed star-gas correlation is consistent with a star formation law where the star formation rate per area varies with the gas column density squared. We also propose a simple picture of thermal fragmentation of dense gas in an isothermal, self-gravitating layer as an explanation for the power law. We present Chandra X-ray data of the NGC 1333 embedded cluster, combining these data with existing Chandra data, Sptizer photometry and ground based spectroscopy of both the NGC 1333 & Serpens North clusters to perform a detailed study of the X-ray properties of two of the nearest embedded clusters to the Sun. In NGC 1333, a total of 95 cluster members are detected in X-rays, of which 54 were previously identified with Spitzer. Of the Spitzer sources, we detect 23% of the Class I protostars, 53% of the Flat Spectrum sources, 52% of the Class II, and 50% of the Transition Disk YSOs. Forty-one Class III members of the cluster are identified, bringing the total identified YSO population to 178. The X-ray Luminosity Functions (XLFs) of the NGC 1333 and Serpens clusters are compared to each other and the Orion Nebula Cluster. Based on this comparison, we obtain a new distance for the Serpens cluster of 360+22/-13 pc. The X-ray luminosity was found to depend on the bolometric luminosity as in previous studies of other clusters, and that Lx depends primarily on the stellar surface area. In the NGC 1333 cluster, the Class III sources have a somewhat higher X-ray luminosity for a given surface area. We also find evidence in NGC 1333 for a jump in the X-ray luminosity between spectral types of M0 and K7, we speculate that this may result from the presence of radiative zones in the K-stars. The gas column density vs. extinction in the NGC 1333 was found to be N_H = 0.89 +/- 0.13 x 10^22 A_K, this is lower than expected of the standard ISM but similar to that found previously in the Serpens Cloud Core., 58 pages, 14 figures, accepted by AJ

Upcoming surveys with the Herschel Space Observatory will yield far-IR photometry of large samples of young stellar objects, which will require careful interpretation. We investigate the color and luminosity diagnostics based on Herschel broad-band filters to identify and discern the properties of low-mass protostars. We compute a grid of 2,016 protostars in various physical congurations, present the expected flux densities and flux density ratios for this grid of protostars, and compare Herschel observations of three protostars to the model results. These provide useful constraints on the range of colors and fluxes of protostar in the Herschel filters. We present new images and photometry of the massive star forming complex Cygnus X obtained with IRAC and MIPS on the Spitzer Space Telescope. A combination of IRAC, MIPS, UKIDSS, and 2MASS data are used to identify and classify young stellar objects. Of the 8,231 sources detected exhibiting infrared excess in Cygnus X North, 670 are classified as Class I and 7,249 are classified as Class II. Using spectra from the FAST spectrograph at the Fred L. Whipple Observatory and Hectospec on the MMT, we spectrally typed 536 sources in the Cygnus X complex to identify the massive stars. We find that YSOs tend to be grouped in the neighborhoods of massive B stars (spectral types B0 to B9). We present a minimal spanning tree analysis of clusters in two regions in Cygnus X North. The fraction of infrared excess sources that belong to clusters with >10 members is found to be 50--70%. Most Class II objects lie in dense clusters within blown out HII regions, while Class I sources tend to reside in more filamentary structures along the bright-rimmed clouds, indicating possible triggered star formation., 16 pages, 20 figures, 7 tables, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present Spitzer-IRAC, NOAO 2.1meter-Flamingos, Keck-NIRC, and FCRAO-SEQUOIA observations of the massive star forming complex S254-S258, covering an area of 25x20 arc-minutes. Using a combination of the IRAC and NIR data, we identify and classify the young stellar objects (YSO) in the complex. We detect 510 sources with near or mid IR-excess, and we classify 87 Class I, and 165 Class II sources. The YSO are found in clusters surrounded by isolated YSO in a low-density distributed population. The ratio of clustered to total YSO is 0.8. We identify six new clusters in the complex. One of them, G192.63-00, is located around the ionizing star of the HII region S255. We hypothesize that the ionizing star of S255 was formed in this cluster. We also detect a southern component of the cluster in HII region S256. The cluster G192.54-0.15, located inside HII region S254 has a VLSR of 17 km/s with respect to the main cloud, and we conclude that it is located in the background of the complex. The structure of the molecular cloud is examined using 12CO and 13CO, as well as a near-IR extinction map. The main body of the molecular cloud has VLSR between 5 and 9 km/s. The arc-shaped structure of the molecular cloud, following the border of the HII regions, and the high column density in the border of the HII regions support the idea that the material has been swept up by the expansion of the HII regions., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present spectral observations of 130 young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Serpens Cloud Core and NGC 1333 embedded clusters. The observations consist of near-IR spectra in the H and K-bands, from SpeX on the IRTF and far-red spectra (6000 - 9000 A) from Hectospec on the MMT. These YSOs were identified in previous Spitzer and Chandra observations, and the evolutionary classes of the YSOs were determined from the Spitzer mid-IR photometry. With these spectra, we search for corroborating evidence for the pre-main sequence nature of the objects, study the properties of the detected emission lines as a function of evolutionary class, and obtain spectral types for the observed YSOs. By comparing the positions of the YSOs in the HR diagrams with the pre-main sequence tracks of Baraffe (1998), we determine ages of the embedded sources and study the relative ages of the YSOs with and without optically thick circumstellar disks. The apparent isochronal ages of the YSOs in both clusters range from less than 1 Myr to 10 Myr, with most objects below 3 Myr. The observed distribution of ages for the Class II and Class III objects are statistically indistinguishable. We examine the spatial distribution and extinction of the YSOs as a function of their isochronal ages. We find the sources < 3 Myr to be concentrated in the molecular cloud gas while the older sources are spatially dispersed and are not deeply embedded. We present Spitzer IRAC (~2 deg^2) and MIPS (~8 deg^2) observations of the Cepheus Flare which is associated with the Gould Belt, at an approximate distance of ~300 pc. Around 6500 sources are detected in all four IRAC bands, of which ~900 have MIPS 24 micron detections. We identify 133 YSO candidates using color-magnitude diagram techniques, a large number of the YSO candidates are associated with the NGC 7023 reflection nebula. Cross identifications were made with the Guide Star Catalog II and the IRAS Faint Source Catalog, and spectral energy distributions (SED) were constructed. SED modeling was conducted to estimate the degree of infrared excess. It was found that a large majority of disks were optically thick accreting disks, suggesting that there has been little disk evolution in these sources. Nearest-neighbor clustering analysis identified four small protostellar groups (L1228, L1228N, L1251A, and L1251B) with 5-15 members each and the larger NGC 7023 association with 32 YSO members. The star formation efficiency for cores with clusters of protostars and for those without clusters was found to be ~8% and ~1% respectively. We report the discovery of four dusty cometary tails around low mass stars in two young clusters belonging to the W5 star forming region. Fits to the observed emission profiles from 24 micron observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope give tail lifetimes < 30 Myr, but more likely < 5 Myr. This result suggests that the cometary phase is a short lived phenomenon, occurring after photoevaporation by a nearby O star has removed gas from the outer disk of a young low mass star (see also Balog et al. 2006; Balog et al. 2008)., 11 pages, 3 figures. A new, unbiased Spitzer-MIPS imaging survey (~1.8 square degs) of the young stellar content of the Vela Molecular Cloud-D is presented. The survey is complete down to 5mJy and 250mJy at 24micron (mu) and 70mu, respectively. 849 sources are detected at 24mu and 52 of them also have a 70mu counterpart. The VMR-D region is one that we have already partially mapped in dust and gas millimeter emission, and we discuss the correlation between the Spitzer compact sources and the mm contours. About half of the 24mu sources are located inside the region delimited by the 12CO(1-0) contours (corresponding to only one third of the full area mapped with MIPS) with a consequent density increase of about 100% of the 24mu sources [four times for 70mu ones] moving from outside to inside the CO contours. About 400 sources have a 2MASS counterpart. So we have constructed a Ks vs. Ks-[24] diagram and identified the protostellar population. We find an excess of Class I sources in VMR-D in comparison with other star forming regions. This result is reasonably biased by the sensitivity limits, or, alternatively, may reflect a very short lifetime (, 29 pages, 14 figures. To appear in Ap.J

We present new Spitzer Space Telescope observations of two fields in the Orion OB1 association. We report here IRAC/MIPS observations for 115 confirmed members and 41 photometric candidates of the ~10 Myr 25 Orionis aggregate in the OB1a subassociation, and 106 confirmed members and 65 photometric candidates of the 5 Myr region located in the OB1b subassociation. The 25 Orionis aggregate shows a disk frequency of 6% while the field in the OB1b subassociation shows a disk frequency of 13%. Combining IRAC, MIPS and 2MASS photometry we place stars bearing disks in several classes: stars with optically thick disks (class II systems), stars with an inner transitional disks (transitional disk candidates) and stars with "evolved disks"; the last exhibit smaller IRAC/MIPS excesses than class II systems. In all, we identify 1 transitional disk candidate in the 25 Orionis aggregate and 3 in the OB1b field; this represents ~10% of the disk bearing stars, indicating that the transitional disk phase can be relatively fast. We find that the frequency of disks is a function of the stellar mass, suggesting a maximum around stars with spectral type M0. Comparing the infrared excess in the IRAC bands among several stellar groups we find that inner disk emission decays with stellar age, showing a correlation with the respective disk frequencies. The disk emission at the IRAC and MIPS bands in several stellar groups indicates that disk dissipation takes place faster in the inner region of the disks. Comparison with models of irradiated accretion disks, computed with several degrees of settling, suggests that the decrease in the overall accretion rate observed in young stellar groups is not sufficient to explain the weak disk emission observed in the IRAC bands for disk bearing stars with ages 5 Myr or older., Comment: Accepted in the Astrophysical Journal

We present a comprehensive analysis of structure in the young, embedded cluster, NGC 1333 using members identified with Spitzer and 2MASS photometry based on their IR-excess emission. In total, 137 members are identified in this way, composed of 39 protostars and 98 more evolved pre-main sequence stars with disks. Of the latter class, four are transition/debris disk candidates. The fraction of exposed pre-main sequence stars with disks is 83% +/- 11%, showing that there is a measurable diskless pre-main sequence population. The sources in each of the Class I and Class II evolutionary states are shown to have very different spatial distributions relative to the distribution of the dense gas in their natal cloud. However, the distribution of nearest neighbor spacings among these two groups of sources are found to be quite similar, with a strong peak at spacings of 0.045 pc. Radial and azimuthal density profiles and surface density maps computed from the identified YSOs show that NGC 1333 is elongated and not strongly centrally concentrated, confirming previous claims in the literature. International audience; Using the Spitzer Space Telescope, we have observed 90 weak-line and classical T Tauri stars in the vicinity of the Ophiuchus, Lupus, Chamaeleon, and Taurus star-forming regions as part of the Cores to Disks (c2d) Spitzer Legacy project. In addition to the Spitzer data, we have obtained contemporaneous optical photometry to assist in constructing spectral energy distributions. These objects were specifically chosen as solar-type young stars with low levels of Hα emission, strong X-ray emission, and lithium absorption, i.e., weak-line T Tauri stars, most of which were undetected in the mid- to far-IR by the IRAS survey. Weak-line T Tauri stars are potentially extremely important objects in determining the timescale over which disk evolution may take place. Our objective is to determine whether these young stars are diskless or have remnant disks that are below the detection threshold of previous infrared missions. We find that only 5/83 weak-line T Tauri stars have detectable excess emission between 3.6 and 70 μm, which would indicate the presence of dust from the inner few tenths of an AU out to the planet-forming regions a few tens of AU from the star. Of these sources, two have small excesses at 24 μm consistent with optically thin disks; the others have optically thick disks already detected by previous IR surveys. All of the seven classical T Tauri stars show excess emission at 24 and 70 μm although their properties vary at shorter wavelengths. Our initial results show that disks are rare among young stars selected for their weak Hα emission.

Using the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope, we have obtained mid-infrared photometry for 25 and 18 low-mass members of the IC 348 and Chamaeleon I star-forming clusters, respectively (>M6, M=M>=0.1 Msun). The similarity of the disk fractions of stars and brown dwarfs is consistent with a common formation mechanism and indicates that the raw materials for planet formation are available around brown dwarfs as often as around stars., 6 pages

We present the initial results from the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) imaging survey of planetary nebulae (PNs). The IRAC colors of PNs are red, especially in the 8.0 μm band. Emission in this band is likely due to contributions from two strong H2 lines and a [Ar III] line in that bandpass. IRAC is sensitive to the emission in the halos as well as in the ionized regions that are optically bright. In NGC 246, we have observed an unexpected ring of emission in the 5.8 and 8.0 μm IRAC bands not seen previously at other wavelengths. In NGC 650 and NGC 3132, the 8.0 μm emission is at larger distances from the central star compared to the optical and other IRAC bands, possibly related to the H2 emission in that band and the tendency for the molecular material to exist outside of the ionized zones. In the flocculi of the outer halo of NGC 6543, however, this trend is reversed, with the 8.0 μm emission bright on the inner edges of the structures. This may be related to the emission mechanism, where the H2 is possibly excited in shocks in the NGC 6543 halo, whereas H2 emission is likely fluorescently excited in the UV fields near the central star.

We report initial results from IRAC observations of four young stellar clusters. These regions are part of a larger Spitzer survey of 31 young stellar groups and clusters within 1 kpc of the Sun. In each of the four clusters, there are between 39 and 85 objects with colors inconsistent with reddened stellar photospheres. We identify these objects as young stars with significant emission from circumstellar dust. Applying an analysis developed in a companion paper (Allen et al. 2004), we classify these objects as either pre-main sequence stars with disks (class II) or protostellar objects (class I). These show that the sites of recent star formation are distributed over multi-parsec size scales. In two clusters, Cepheus C and S140, we find protostars embedded in filamentary dark clouds seen against diffuse emission in the IRAC bands., Comment: Accepted to the Spitzer special issue of the Astrophysical Journal Supplement

We present observations of the star formation region NGC 7129 taken with the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS). A significant population of sources, likely pre-main sequence members of the young stellar cluster, is revealed outside the central photoionization region. Combining with Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) and ground-based near-infrared images, we have obtained colors and spectral energy distributions for some 60 objects. The [3.6]-[4.5] vs. [8]-[24] color-color plane shows sources clustered at several different loci, which roughly correspond to the archetypal evolutionary sequence Class 0, I, II, and III. We obtain preliminary classifications for 36 objects, and find significant numbers of both Class I and II objects. Most of the pre-main sequence candidates are associated with the densest part of the molecular cloud surrounding the photoionization region, indicating active star formation over a broad area outside the central cluster. We discuss three Class II candidates that exhibit evidence of inner disk clearing, which would be some of the youngest known examples of a transition from accretion to optically thin quiescent disks., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures. Crucial steps in the formation of stars and planets can be studied only at mid-infrared to far-infrared wavelengths, where SIRTF provides an unprecedented improvement in sensitivity. We will use all three SIRTF instruments (IRAC, MIPS, and IRS) to observe sources that span the evolutionary sequence from molecular cores to protoplanetary disks, encompassing a wide range of cloud masses, stellar masses, and star-forming environments. In addition to targeting about 150 known compact cores, we will survey with IRAC and MIPS (3.6 to 70 micron) the entire areas of five of the nearest large molecular clouds for new candidate protostars and substellar objects as faint as 0.001 solar luminosities. We will also observe with IRAC and MIPS about 190 systems likely to be in the early stages of planetary system formation(ages up to about 10 Myr), probing the evolution of the circumstellar dust, the raw material for planetary cores. Candidate planet-forming disks as small as 0.1 lunar masses will be detectable. Spectroscopy with IRS of new objects found in the surveys and of a select group of known objects will add vital information on the changing chemical and physical conditions in the disks and envelopes. The resulting data products will include catalogs of thousands of previously unknown sources, multiwavelength maps of about 20 square degrees of molecular clouds, photometry of about 190 known young stars, spectra of at least 170 sources, ancillary data from ground-based telescopes, and new tools for analysis and modeling. These products will constitute the foundations for many follow-up studies with ground-based telescopes, as well as with SIRTF itself and other space missions such as SIM, JWST, Herschel, and TPF., Comment: (22 pages, 10 figures, PASP in press)

We identify protostars in Spitzer surveys of nine star-forming molecular clouds within 1 kpc: Serpens, Perseus, Ophiuchus, Chamaeleon, Lupus, Taurus, Orion, Cep OB3, and Mon R2, which combined host over 700 protostar candidates. Our diverse cloud sample allows us to compare protostar luminosity functions in these varied environments. We combine photometry from 2MASS J, H, and Ks bands and Spitzer IRAC and MIPS 24 micron bands to create 1 - 24 micron spectral energy distributions (SEDs). Using protostars from the c2d survey with well-determined bolometric luminosities (Lbol), we derive a relationship between Lbol, L_MIR (integrated from 1 - 24 microns), and SED slope. Estimations of Lbol for protostar candidates are combined to create luminosity functions for each cloud. Contamination due to edge-on disks, reddened Class II sources, and galaxies is estimated and removed from the luminosity functions. We find that luminosity functions for high mass star forming clouds peak near 1 Lsun and show a tail extending toward luminosities above 100 Lsun. The luminosity functions of the low mass star forming clouds do not exhibit a common peak, however the combined luminosity function of these regions peaks below 1 Lsun. Finally, we examine the luminosity functions as a function of the local surface density of YSOs. In the Orion molecular cloud, we find a significant difference between the luminosity functions of protostars in regions of high and low stellar density, the former of which is biased toward more luminous sources. This may be the result of primordial mass segregation, although this interpretation is not unique. We compare our luminosity functions to those predicted by models and find that our observed luminosity functions are best matched by models which invoke competitive accretion, although we do not find strong agreement of the high mass star forming clouds with any of the models., Comment: 76 pages, 18 figures, 7 tables. Bok globules, optically opaque small dark clouds, are classical examples of isolated star formation. However, the collapse mechanism for these cold, dense clouds of gas and dust is not well understood. Observations of Bok globules include some which appear to be starless while others harbor single stars, binaries and even small groups of forming stars. One example of a Bok globule forming a group of stars is CB 34, observed with both the IRAC and MIPS instruments as part of the Spitzer Young Cluster Survey. Based on initial analysis of 1-8 μm photometry from IRAC and the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), we identified 9 Class 0/I and 14 Class II young stellar objects within the small, 4.5′ × 4.5′ region encompassing CB 34. This unusually high number of protostars compared with Class II sources is intriguing because it implies a high rate of star formation. Therefore we have begun a larger study of this region in order to determine why and how CB 34 started forming stars at such a high rate. Is CB 34 embedded within a larger HII region which may have triggered its collapse or does it appear to have collapsed in isolation from outside influences?

Emission from the CO molecule at lambda = 2.6 mm has been observed at 1412 positions in 300 galaxies using the 14 m telescope of the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory (HPBW = 45"); these data comprise the FCRAO Extragalactic CO Survey. In this paper we describe the galaxy sample, present the data, and determine global CO fluxes and radial distributions for the galaxies in the Survey. Future papers will deal with the data analysis, both with regard to the global properties of galaxies and the radial distributions within them. CO emission was detected in 236 of the 300 Survey galaxies for an overall detection rate of 79%; among the 52 Sc galaxies in the Survey, the detection rate was as high as 96%. most of the 193 galaxies observed in multiple positions exhibit CO distributions which peak at the center. However, a small number (10-primarily Sb galaxies) exhibit CO rings at 45" resolution, and a similar number (18-primarily Sc galaxies) have CO distributions which peak on one side of the center. We derive CO isophotal diameters for 151 galaxies and find the mean ratio of CO to optical isophotal diameters to be 0.5. We also find a trend along the Hubble sequence such that the mean ratio of CO to optical isophotal diameters is smallest among the early-type spirals (SO/a, Sa, and Sab) and the mean ratio increases for Sb, Sbc, and Sc galaxies, finally decreasing among the later types. Comparison of the global fluxes we derive for the Survey galaxies with independent measurements from the literature indicates that the global fluxes we derive are accurate to ~40%.

We present a grid of stellar classification spectra of moderate resolution (R approximately 1500) in the range lambda lambda 5600-9000 A, compiled from high signal-to noise spectra of 275 stars, most in the open clusters Praesepe and M67. The grid covers dwarfs from types B8 through M5, giants from G8 through M7, and subgiants from F5 through K0. We catalog atomic and molecular absorption features useful for stellar classification, and demonstrate the use of luminosity-sensitive features to distinguish between late-type dwarf and giant stars. The entire database is made available in digital format on anonymous ftp and through the World Wide Web.

The Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) shallow survey covers 8.5 deg2 in the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey in Bootes with three or more 30 s exposures per position. An overview of the survey design, reduction, calibration, star-galaxy separation, and initial results is provided. The survey includes ≈370,000, 280,000, 38,000, and 34,000 sources brighter than the 5 σ limits of 6.4, 8.8, 51, and 50 μJy at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8 μm, respectively, including some with unusual spectral energy distributions.
