New polyphenylquinoxalines (PPQs) containing methyl substituents have been synthesized and characterized. The PPQs were prepared by the polycondensation of a newly-developed aromatic tetraketone, 4,4' -bis(4-benzilyloxy)-3,3',5,5' -tetramethylbiphenyl (III) and aromatic tetraamines. Compared with the non-methyl-substituted PPQs derived from 1,4-bis (4-benzilyloxy)benzene (I) and 4,4' -bis(4-benzilyloxy)biphenyl (II), the obtained polymers exhibited better solubility. They were soluble not only in the common m-cresol and chloroform, but in polar aprotic solvent N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP). The polymers showed glass transition temperatures of 325°C for PPQ-IIIa (from III and 3,3',4,4' -tetraaminobiphenyl) and 287°C for PPQ-IIIb (from III and 3,3',4,4' -tetraaminodiphenyl ether), which were much higher than their analogues. The PPQs exhibited good thermal stability up to 470°C in nitrogen and good optical transparency at 450 nm with a thickness of around 10 μ m. The refractive indices and birefringences of the PPQs were in the range of 1.6998-1.7739 and 0.0002-0.0007, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new diamine monomer with bis-trifluoromethyl-substituted phenyl in the side chain, α,α-bis (4-amino-3,5-dimethylphenyl)-3′,5′-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl methane (6FMA) was successfully synthesized. A series of fluorinated polyimides (PI-IIa-d) were prepared by reacting the diamine with various aromatic dianhydrides. For comparison, another series of polyimides (PI-Ia-d) derived from another diamine with single-trifluoromethyl-substituted phenyl in the side chain, α,α-bis(4-amino-3,5-dimethylphenyl)-3′-trifluoromethyl phenyl methane and the same dianhydrides were also synthesized. The polymers were characterized by inherent viscosity, elemental analysis, Fourier transform-infrared, X-ray, ultraviolet-visible analysis, moisture absorption, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry measurements. It was shown that PI-II polyimides exhibited good film formability, enhanced solubility, good thermal stability, superior optical transparency, and acceptable mechanical properties. In addition, the polyimides derived from 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride and 6FMA showed high sensitivity to i-line (365 nm) of a high-pressure mercury lamp. Abstract: Semi-alicyclic polyimides (PI-1–PI-4) have been prepared from a newly-developed alicyclic dianhydride, 3,4-dicarboxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-6-tert-butyl-1-naphthalene succinic dianhydride (TTDA) and various aromatic diamines. The asymmetrical alicyclic tetralin structure in TTDA endowed the derived PI resins good solubility in various organic solvents. They were soluble not only in polar aprotic solvents but also in solvents with low boiling points including dichloromethane and tetrahydrofuran. Flexible and tough PI films were successfully cast from their N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) solution except PI-1 derived from TTDA and 4,4′-oxydianiline (ODA). The PI films exhibited good optical transparency in the ultraviolet and visible light region with optical transmittances around 80% at a wavelength of 400nm. The PI films showed good thermal stability up to 400°C in nitrogen, after that they thermally decomposed rapidly. The thermal degradation behaviors of the PIs were investigated by means of thermogravimetric analysis-mass spectrometry (TG-MS), thermogravimetric analysis-Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (TG-FTIR) and the real time FTIR spectra (RT-FTIR) analysis techniques. The results revealed that the decomposition of PI-1 (as a representative) took place mainly in the range of 450–550°C. The major degradative fragments at 500°C were clearly identified as the tert-butyl-substituted tetralin moiety and its dealkylation products. Therefore, it can be deduced that for the TTDA-PIs, the single bond bridge attached the maleic anhydride and tetralin anhydride units in TTDA moiety might break first during the heating; thus producing the tetralin fragments. Organo-soluble fluorinated polyimides were synthesized by the polycondensation of a new aromatic diamine α,α-bis(4-amino-3,5-dimethylphenyl)-4′-fluorophenyl methane with several aromatic dianhydrides. The one-step polymerization procedure was conducted at 180°C in m-cresol, producing the polyimides with inherent viscosities of 0.68–0.76 dL· g-1. The polyimides could be soluble not only in polar aprotic solvents, such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, and N,N-dimethylacetamide, but also in common organic solvents, such as chloroform, cyclopentanone, m-cresol and so on. The polyimide films show excellent transparency with the UV-Vis cut-off lengths of 310–360 nm and light transmittances of higher than 80% in the visible region. In addition, the polyimides exhibit good thermal stability with an initial decomposition temperature (Td) higher than 530°C and have more than 60% of residual weight retentions at 700°C. An aromatic diamine monomer, 4,4′-bis(3-amino-5-trifluoromethyl phenoxy)-biphenyl (TFBPDA), was synthesized via the nucleophilic displacement reaction of 3,5-dinitrobenzotrifluoride and 4,4′-biphenol. The monomer was reacted with various aromatic dianhydrides via the high temperature polycondensation procedure to provide a series of polyimides. The polyimides, PI-1 to PI-4, show good solubility not only in aprotic solvents, such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone and N,N-dimethylacetamide, but also in many common solvents, such as m-cresol, chloroform and cyclopentanone. PI-4, derived from 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride and TFBPDA, was even soluble in toluene. Moreover, PI films exhibit good thermal stability, outstanding transparency in the visible light region and acceptable mechanical and electrical properties.
