Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash is a hazardous waste containing heavy metals. Secondary aluminum dross (SAD) is a hazardous waste discharged from aluminum smelting, containing active aluminum nitride (AlN). In this work, heavy metals from MSWI fly ash were reduced into alloy by AlN from SAD, and the slag was manufactured into transparent glass for building. Reduction of iron and zinc was 67 and 100 %, respectively. Reduction mechanism was explored after applying XRD, XRF and thermodynamics analysis. It was found that the reduction reaction was an ion reaction. The AlN and heavy metal oxide transformed into anionic group containing nitrogen and heavy metal cation, after entering slag. The heavy metals were reduced into alloy after electron was transferred from anionic group to cation. In addition, the reduced iron and zinc could merge into alloy, which inhibited evaporation of zinc. Yellow transparent glass was obtained after the reduction process. Yellow was come from titanium oxide, which could not be reduced by AlN. Microhardness, density and water absorption of the transparent glass were 741 HV, 2.86 g·cm -3 and 0.04 %, respectively. Leaching content of Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb of the glass were 0.1, <0.1, 0.6 and < 0.1 mg/L, respectively, all below the TCLP limit. About 115 ∼ 213 dollars were earned after manufacturing 500 kg of MSWI fly ash into transparent glass. Safe disposal of solid wastes containing heavy metals is a significant task for environment protection. Immobilization treatment is an effective technology to achieve this task. Cementitious material treatments and thermal treatments are two types of attractive immobilization treatments due to that the heavy metals could be encapsulated in their dense and durable wasteforms. This paper discusses the heavy metal immobilization mechanisms of these methods in detail. Physical encapsulation and chemical stabilization are two fundamental mechanisms that occur simultaneously during the immobilization processes. After immobilization treatments, the wasteforms build up a low permeable barrier for the contaminations. This reduces the exposed surface of wastes. Chemical stabilization occurs when the heavy metals transform into more stable and less soluble metal bearing phases. The heavy metal bearing phases in the wasteforms are also reviewed in this paper. If the heavy metals are incorporated into more stable and less soluble metal bearing phases, the potential hazards of heavy metals will be lower. Thus, converting heavy metals into more stable phases during immobilization processes should be a common way to enhance the immobilization effect of these immobilization methods., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. The reactive AlN, heavy metal ions, and salts in secondary aluminum dross make them harmful to the environment and difficult to handle, and therefore categorized as hazardous solid waste. A novel, simple, and versatile technique has been proposed here to prepare hierarchically porous ceramics using secondary aluminum dross as the sole raw material, namely, the hydrolysis‐induced simultaneous foaming and coagulation casting method. As the main component, Al and AlN could be hydrolyzed to generate aluminum hydroxide sol, which can form three‐dimensional network and lead to the outstanding compressive strength of green body (7.03 MPa). Gas release during hydrolysis, high‐temperature oxidation of AlN, and metallic Al based on Kirkendall effect could account for the final multilevel pores. The utilization of harmful components in secondary aluminum dross, supplys an alternative colloidal forming way for porous green body with complex shape when combined with other ceramic powders or inorganic solid waste. Low sintering shrinkage of 1.38%–3.60% for hierarchically porous ceramics offers this highly effective and low‐cost method to be easily promoted for industrial production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coal fly ash (CFA) is a type of solid waste produced in the process of coal combustion, which is rich in silicon oxide, aluminum oxide and a small number of heavy metals and radioactive elements. Therefore, CFA is considered a secondary resource with high recovery value. Currently, CFA is mainly reused in the fields of building materials, mine backfilling, soil conditioners and fertilizers, among which the production of building materials is one of the most important ways to realize large-scale utilization of CFA. This paper introduces the physical and chemical properties, classification and environmental impact of CFA and summarizes the utilization status of CFA in building materials such as cement, concrete, ceramics and geopolymers, as well as the management policy of CFA. Herein, a simple, versatile, and low‐cost approach has been proposed to realize the green utilization of secondary aluminum dross, the hazardous solid waste, namely directly sintering dry‐pressed green bodies from secondary aluminum dross to fabricate porous ceramics according to high‐temperature foaming process spontaneously without adding spare foaming agents. Aluminum nitride (AlN) in secondary aluminum dross was employed to realize high‐temperature foaming due to its oxidation, which makes traditional AlN and salts removal process needless. Moreover, near‐zero shrinkage or even expansion during sintering of porous ceramics have occurred because in‐situ foaming process together with the oxidation of Al particles well offset the sintering shrinkage. After sintering at 1400°C for 2 h, porous ceramics composed of α‐Al2O3 and spinel phases with open porosity of 37.91%, sintering expansion rate of 1.13%, flexural strength of 45.67 MPa, and thermal conductivity of 0.97 W/(m·K) have been prepared. Cenospheres as pore‐forming agents have been added to further improve the porosity, and alumina‐based porous ceramics with open porosity of 28.39%–43.20% and flexural strength of 15.80–52.48 MPa have been obtained. This effective solution for recycling secondary aluminum dross could supply high‐performance porous ceramics, which is expected to be applied in the fields of light‐weight structural components and thermal insulations. Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) has already been extensively applied to facilitate volume reduction and energy recovery. Known as toxic solid waste for high content dioxins, MSWI fly ash is accumulated accordingly. Dioxins in MSWI fly ash are primarily derived from homogeneous reaction and heterogeneous reaction in the range of 200–800 °C, including cyclization, chlorination, catalytic and de novo synthesis of precursors. Degradation of dioxins is considered necessary for the disposal of MSWI fly ash harmless. Among the alternative degradation technologies, plasma, mechanochemistry, hydrothermal, photocatalytic and biodegradation have demonstrated an excellent detoxification effect and are conducive to the application of MSWI fly ash as a sort of resource. In this paper, a systematic review is conducted of the mechanism and process parameters of these five methods, with the emphasis placed on their potential for the large-scale treatment of MSWI fly ash. The study aims at indicating the current research status for scholars, and at identifying a treatment for MSWI fly ash that can be performed in a safer and more efficient way. Finally, their respective characteristics, challenges and future improvements are discussed as well. Secondary aluminum dross (SAD) and red mud (RM) are solid waste discharged from aluminum industry. SAD contains 10–25 wt% aluminum nitride (AlN) and RM contains 20–50 wt% iron oxide. In this work, porous metal-ceramic composite was in-situ made from SAD and RM. Iron oxide was reduced into Fe 2 Si by AlN, and the generated nitrogen created pores. It was studied that effect of raw material and thermal treatment on pore structure and properties of the composite. Porosity, bulk density and compressive strength of composite were 65.78%, 1.03 g/cm3 and 17.77 MPa, when SAD content was 40 wt% and sintering temperature was 1450 °C. About 95.9% of malachite green in waste water was adsorbed by composite after 24 h. The composite could be recycled by magnetic separation after adsorption, attributed to the magnetic Fe 2 Si. This work proposed a novel idea of making recyclable porous material for adsorption of organics in waste water. Metallurgy, mineral processing, waste disposal, and other industries produce large amounts of industrial solid waste containing heavy metals (ISWCHM), which poses a serious threat to the ecological environment. Geopolymers are aluminosilicate inorganic polymers that have the advantages of high strength, good corrosion resistance, and low carbon emission during production. The use of ISWCHM to prepare geopolymers can simultaneously utilize solid waste resources and solidify heavy metals. In this paper, the latest research progress in the preparation of geopolymers from ISWCHM is reviewed, including the preparation techniques, application and solidification/stabilization mechanisms of heavy metals. As a hazardous waste, municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash poses a serious threat to the environment, and considerable efforts have been made to achieve its harmless treatment. Herein, a novel approach for handling MSWI fly ash has been proposed to prepare porous glass–ceramics by alkali activation–crystallization, which overcomes the difficulty of controlling air bubbles under high temperatures. MSWI bottom ash rich in Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 are co-treating as raw material to develop glass framework structure. The alkali activation mechanism shows that the development of MSWI ashes based basic glass from monomer to silica–aluminate gel under alkaline condition. The influence of H 2 O 2 addition on the morphology and physical properties of porous glass–ceramics were evaluated. Porous glass–ceramics with uniform hierarchical pore structure have been fabricated at 3 mol/L NaOH, a solid loading of 55 wt%, and 1–4 wt.% H 2 O 2 , then crystallization treatment at 1150 °C for 2 h, the porosity and the bulk density of which varies from 77.22 to 82.94% and 0.68–0.91 g/cm3 respectively, while their relatively high compressive strength ranges from 1.62 MPa to 3.85 MPa. Attributed to the hierarchical porous structure, uniform distribution of pores and excellent physical properties, porous glass–ceramics has potential applications in construction, filtration, and adsorption materials, providing a convenient and feasible method for the efficient and comprehensive utilization of MSWI ashes. • Glass ceramic foams with high strength is developed by multiple solid wastes. • Secondary aluminum ash as self-foaming material is proposed to prepare glass ceramic foams. • The self-foaming mechanism relies on the oxidation reaction of AlN. • The degree of polymerization in glass with different alkalinity is analyzed. Glass ceramic foam with high strength was developed using municipal waste incineration bottom ash, fly ash, pickling sludge and secondary aluminum ash as raw materials without foaming agent. The effect of the secondary aluminum ash content and alkalinity on the pore morphology, porosity, water absorption, compression strength and bulk density of glass ceramic foams has been evaluated. The results showed that the increase of secondary aluminum ash content is beneficial to gas generation, but it will reduce the formation of liquid phase, resulting in the variation of pore morphology. In the process of alkalinity adjustment, the degree of polymerization of glass decreased first and then increased, which is similar to the change of max pore size, providing guidance for quantitative analysis of pore formation. The optimized sample reached porosities up to 63.02%, bulk density of ~1.42 g/cm3, and excellent compressive strength ~41.93 MPa. The analysis of self-foaming mechanism proved that secondary aluminum ash can be used as a self-foaming waste results from the oxidation reaction of AlN. In this work, a clean and sustainable utilization method has been proposed for recycling multiple solid wastes by preparing glass ceramic foams with a potential application for construction insulation materials with load-bearing. Municipal solid waste incinerated (MSWI) fly ash and pickling sludge contain heavy metals such as Cr, Pb, Ni, etc., which are harmful to the environment but also suitable to be the nucleating agents in glass-ceramics preparation. In this paper, MSWI fly ash, pickling sludge, and waste glass were melted at 1400 °C for 3 h, and the obtained parent glass was nucleated and crystallized at 800 °C for 0.5 h. Glass-ceramics was successfully prepared by the one-step process. The effects of the content of pickling sludge on crystalline properties of parent glass and the physicochemical properties of glass-ceramics have been systematically discussed. The gap between nucleation temperature (T n) and crystallization temperature (T c) can be narrowed with higher content of pickling sludge, which caused fracture of the glass network (Si-O) and generation of the nonbridging oxygen (NBO), promoting the formation of diopside phase. As a result, nucleation and crystallization can be finished at the same temperature, called one-step process. The sample PS22 with 22 wt% pickling sludge added performed the best crystallization ability for having the narrowest gap (ΔT = 177 °C) between T c and glass transition temperature (T g) and the highest ratio of NBO to total oxygen (T) (NBO/T = 1.72). The Vickers' hardness and bending resistance of the products are 13.11 GPa and 135.84 MPa, respectively. The glass-ceramics are composed of homogeneously distributed diopside, donathite-spinel and glass phase. The toxic heavy metals are effectively stabilized by glass-ceramics. This study provides insights into more efficient and cleaner utilization of MSWI fly ash, pickling sludge and waste glass as glass-ceramic materials.
