Mars once had a dense atmosphere enabling liquid water existing on its surface, however, much of that atmosphere has since escaped to space. We examine how incoming solar and solar wind energy fluxes drive escape of atomic and molecular oxygen ions (O+ and O2+ ${\mathrm{O}}_{2}^{+}$) at Mars. We use MAVEN data to evaluate ion escape from 1 February 2016 through 25 May 2022. We find that Martian O+ and O2+ ${\mathrm{O}}_{2}^{+}$ both have increased escape flux with increased solar wind kinetic energy flux and this relationship is generally logarithmic. Increased solar wind electromagnetic energy flux also corresponds to increased O+ and O2+ ${\mathrm{O}}_{2}^{+}$ escape flux, however, increased solar wind electromagnetic energy flux seems to first dampen ion escape until a threshold level is reached, at which point ion escape increases with increasing electromagnetic energy flux. Increased solar irradiance (both total and ionizing) does not obviously increase escape of O+ and O2+ ${\mathrm{O}}_{2}^{+}$. Our results suggest that the solar wind electromagnetic energy flux should be considered along with the kinetic energy flux as an important driver of ion escape, and that other parameters should be considered when evaluating solar irradiance's impact on O+ and O2+ ${\mathrm{O}}_{2}^{+}$ escape. The typical subsolar stand‐off distance of Mars' bow shock is of the order of a solar wind ion convective gyroradius, making it highly non‐planar to incident ions. Using spacecraft observations and a test particle model, we illustrate the impact of the bow shock curvature on transient structures which form near the upstream edge of moving foreshocks caused by slow rotations in the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). The structures exhibit noticeable decrease in the solar wind plasma density and the IMF strength within their core, are accompanied by a compressional shock layer, and are consistent with foreshock bubbles (FBs). Ion populations responsible for these structures include backstreaming ions that only appear within the moving foreshock and reflected ions with hybrid trajectories that straddle between the quasi‐perpendicular and quasi‐parallel bow shocks during slow IMF rotations. Both ion populations accumulate near the upstream edge of the moving foreshock which facilitates FB formation. The solar wind also carries a magnetic field which at times contains twists or discontinuities. The discontinuities are associated with large scale electric currents that can have planar shapes. A planetary obstacle significantly modulate the solar wind plasma and the interaction of solar wind discontinuities with the modulated plasma upstream of the planet leads to formation of transient structures. Due to their relatively large size, these structures can significantly impact and destabilize plasma boundaries at lower altitudes closer to the surface. Solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation, the solar wind, and solar energetic particles (SEPs) are variable sources of ionization and heating to the Martian atmosphere. Mars Atmosphere Volatile Evolution's (MAVEN's) elliptical orbit provides a means to characterize these solar drivers immediately upstream of Mars. We have calculated the energy fluxes of EUV, solar wind, and SEPs while MAVEN is outside of the Martian induced magnetosphere. By time‐averaging observations over 2–5 month periods, we reduced short‐term variability to resolve seasonal and solar cycle trends. For the duration spanning the declining phase of solar cycle 24 and three Mars years, the calculated energy fluxes in units of 109 eV/cm2/s were 650–1,400 for EUV, 77–180 for solar wind ions, 2.4–7.4 for solar wind electrons, 0.01–2.7 for SEP ions, and 0–0.4 for SEP electrons. We estimated the fraction of these energy fluxes that would reach the atmosphere and determined that precipitating particle fluxes on the dayside would need to exceed 1012 eV/cm2/s to compare to EUV. We also predicted that SEPs may impart as much or more energy flux than solar wind electrons on the nightside during periods of strong and weak coronal mass ejection activity. We then discussed and decoupled seasonal variation from the solar drivers to reveal trends and outliers as a function of solar cycle. Finally, we compared MAVEN observations during a weak solar cycle to prior estimates of EUV, solar wind, and SEPs from the young sun, and identified times when MAVEN‐observed peak energy fluxes were close to the steady‐state energy fluxes of the ancient solar system. We discuss the influence of the solar wind dynamic pressure on the ion precipitation using observations performed by MAVEN from 4 June 2014 to 20 July 2017. The increase of the dynamic pressure from 0.63 to 1.44 nPa is clearly associated with an increase of the same order of magnitude of the precipitating oxygen ion energy flux measured by MAVEN/STATIC from 9.9 to 20.6 × 106 eV · cm−2 · sr−1 · s−1 at low energy (from 30 to 650 eV). In the same way, from 650 to 25,000 eV, MAVEN/SWIA (all species) observed an increase from 22.4 to 42.8 × 107eV · cm−2 · sr−1 · s−1 of the precipitating ion energy flux. Performing two simulations using the average solar wind conditions for both solar dynamic pressure regimes observed by MAVEN as input of the LatHyS model (LATMOS Hybrid Simulation), we reproduce some of the key characteristics of the observed oxygen ion precipitation. We characterize the oxygen ions simulated by LatHyS by their energy and time of impact, their time of injection in the simulation and initial position, and the mechanism by which these ions were created. The model suggests that the main cause of the increase of the heavy ion precipitation during an increase of the solar dynamic pressure is the increase of the ion production by charge exchange, proportional to the increase of the solar wind flux, which becomes the main contribution to the ion precipitation at high energy. The observations made by the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN spacecraft in the topside (≥200 km) ionosphere of Mars show that this region is very responsive to the variations of the external (solar extreme ultraviolet flux, solar wind, and interplanetary magnetic field [IMF]) and internal (the crustal magnetic field) drivers. With the growth of the solar irradiance the ionosphere broadens while with increase of the solar wind dynamic pressure it shrinks. As a result, the upper ionospheric boundary at solar zenith angles of 60–70° can move from ∼400 to ∼1,200 km. Similar trends are observed at the nightside ionosphere. At Pdyn ≥ 1–2 nPa the nightside ionosphere becomes very fragmented and depleted. On the other hand, the ion density in the nightside ionosphere significantly (up to a factor of 10) increases with the rise of the solar extreme ultraviolet flux. Large‐amplitude motions of the topside ionosphere also occur with variations of the value of the cross‐flow component of the IMF. The upper dayside ionosphere at altitudes of more than 300–400 km is sensitive also to the direction of the cross‐flow component of the IMF or, correspondingly, to the direction of the motional electric field in the solar wind. The ionosphere becomes very asymmetrical with respect to the Vsw×BIMF direction and the asymmetry strongly enhances at the nightside. The topside ionosphere above the areas with strong crustal magnetic field in the dayside southern hemisphere is significantly denser and expands to higher altitudes as compared to the ionosphere above the northern nonmagnetized lowlands. The crustal magnetic field also protects the nightside ionosphere from being filled by plasma transported from the dayside. The draping IMF penetrates deeply into the ionosphere and actively influences its structure. Weak fields and, correspondingly, weak magnetic field forces only slightly affect the ionosphere. With increase of the induced magnetic field strength the transport motions driven by the magnetic field pressure and field tensions seem to be intensified and we observe that the local ion densities at the dayside considerably decrease. A different trend is observed at the nightside. The ion density in the nightside ionosphere above the northern lowlands is higher than in the southern hemisphere indicating that plasma transport from the dayside is the main source of the nightside ionosphere. Nonstop variations in the solar wind, the IMF and the solar irradiance together with planetary rotation of the crustal magnetic field sources lead to a continuous expansion/shrinking and reconfiguration of the topside ionosphere of Mars. We study the influence of the solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) flux intensity on the precipitating ion fluxes as seen by the Solar Wind Ion Analyzer, an energy and angular ion spectrometer aboard the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft. We defined three periods with significantly different EUV flux intensity (1.6 and 3.2 times the lowest EUV intensity) and compare the precipitating ion flux measured by MAVEN/Solar Wind Ion Analyzer during each period. At low energy [30–650] eV, we find that the median (average) precipitating ion flux during the medium and low EUV periods are, respectively, 1.7 (2.1) and 3 (3.5) times more intense than the flux during the high EUV period. At high energy [650–25,000] eV, a similar trend in the intensity of the precipitating ion flux is observed but with an increase by 50% (46%) and 70% (79%), respectively. A larger EUV flux does therefore not seem to favor heavy ion precipitation into Mars's atmosphere, contrary to modeling prediction and overall expectations. In this work, we study the influence of the September 2017 solar event on the precipitating heavy ion fluxes toward Mars' atmosphere as seen by Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN/Solar Wind Ion Analyzer, an energy and angular ion spectrometer and by Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN/Suprathermal and Thermal Ion Composition instrument, an energy, mass, and angular ion spectrometer. After a careful reconstruction of the background induced by the Solar Energetic Particle event in the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN/Solar Wind Ion Analyzer spectrometer, we investigate the precipitating ion flux responses to the space weather events that took place in September 2017. This period is a unique opportunity to analyze the respective role of various possible drivers of heavy ion precipitation into Mars' atmosphere with a wide range of different space weather events occurring during the same month. This study shows an increase in the precipitation flux by more than 1 order of magnitude during the arrival of the September Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejection compared to the average flux during quiet solar conditions. We also showed that among the possible solar drivers, the solar wind dynamic pressure is the most significant during September 2017. We present multi-instrument observations of the effects of solar wind on ion escape fluxes on Mars based on the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) data from 1 November 2014 to 15 May 2016. Losses of oxygen ions through different channels (plasma sheet, magnetic lobes, boundary layer, and ion plume) as a function of the solar wind and the interplanetary magnetic field variations were studied. We have utilized the modified Mars Solar Electric (MSE) coordinate system for separation of the different escape routes. Fluxes of the low-energy (≤30 eV) and high-energy (≥30 eV) ions reveal different trends with changes in the solar wind dynamic pressure, the solar wind flux, and the motional electric field. Major oxygen fluxes occur through the tail of the induced magnetosphere. The solar wind motional electric field produces an asymmetry in the ion fluxes and leads to different relations between ion fluxes supplying the tail from the different hemispheres and the solar wind dynamic pressure (or flux) and the motional electric field. The main driver for escape of the high-energy oxygen ions is the solar wind flux (or dynamic pressure). On the other hand, the low-energy ion component shows the opposite trend: ion flux decreases with increasing solar wind flux. As a result, the averaged total oxygen ion fluxes reveal a low variability with the solar wind strength. The large standard deviations from the averages values of the escape fluxes indicate the existence of mechanisms which can enhance or suppress the efficiency of the ion escape. It is shown that the Martian magnetosphere possesses the properties of a combined magnetosphere which contains different classes of field lines. The existence of the closed magnetic field lines in the near-Mars tail might be responsible for suppression of the ion escape fluxes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present multi-instrument observations of the effects of solar irradiance on the upper Martian ionosphere and escape fluxes based on the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) data from November 2014 to February 2016. It is shown that fluxes of oxygen ions with E > 30 eV both inside and outside of the Martian magnetosphere are nonsensitive to EUV variations. In contrast, the fluxes of ions with lower energies extracted from the upper ionosphere increase with solar irradiance. Such an enhancement is nonlinear with the EUV variations and exhibits a growth by almost 1 order of magnitude when the EUV (0.1-50 nm) radiation increases to ≥0.1 W/m2 implying an enhancement of total ion losses of the low-energy component to ∼1.8·1025 s−1. The flow of cold ions in the near-Mars tail occurs very asymmetrical shifting in the direction opposite to the direction of the solar wind motional electric field. The Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) monitor is an instrument on the NASA Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission, designed to measure the variability of the solar soft x-rays and EUV irradiance at Mars. The solar output in this wavelength range is a primary energy input to the Mars atmosphere and a driver for the processes leading to atmospheric escape. The MAVEN EUV monitor consists of three broadband radiometers. The radiometers consist of silicon photodiodes with different bandpass-limiting filters for each channel. The filters for the radiometers are: Channel A: thin foil C/Al/Nb/C for 0.1-3 nm and 17-22 nm, Channel B: thin foil C/Al/Ti/C for 0.1-7 nm, and Channel C: interference filter for 121-122 nm. A fourth, covered photodiode is used to monitor variations in dark signal due to temperature and radiation background changes. The three science channels will monitor emissions from the highly variable corona and transition region of the solar atmosphere. The EUV monitor is mounted on the top deck of the MAVEN spacecraft and is pointed at the Sun for most of its orbit around Mars. The measurement cadence is 1-second. The broadband irradiances can be used to monitor the most rapid changes in solar irradiance due to flares. In combination with time-interpolated observations at Earth of slower varying solar spectral emissions, the broadband MAVEN EUV monitor measurements will also be used in a spectral irradiance model to generate the full EUV spectrum at Mars from 0 to 190 nm in 1-nm bins on a time cadence of 1-minute and daily averages. We present a novel method to determine solar wind proxies from sheath measurements at Mars. Specifically, we develop an artificial neural network (ANN) to simultaneously infer seven solar wind proxies: ion density, ion speed, ion temperature, and interplanetary magnetic field magnitude and its vector components, using spacecraft measurements of ion moments, magnetic field magnitude, magnetic field components in the sheath, and the solar extreme ultraviolet flux. The ANN was trained and tested using 3 years of data from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft. When compared with MAVEN spacecraft's in situ measured values of the solar wind parameters, we find that the ANN proxies for the solar wind ion density, ion speed, ion temperature, and interplanetary magnetic field magnitude have percentage differences of 50% or less for 84.4%, 99.9%, 86.8%, and 79.8% of the instances, respectively. For the cone angle and clock angle proxies, 69.1% and 53.3% of instances, respectively, have angle differences of 30∘ or less. Data in the solar wind and the plasma environment near Mars measured by the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN spacecraft, which has been orbiting Mars since 2014, were used to train an artificial neural network to simultaneously infer seven solar wind parameters: solar wind density, speed, temperature, and interplanetary magnetic field and its three components. Comparison of the neural network‐inferred values to the in situ measured values reveals that the artificial neural network can infer the solar wind density, speed, temperature, and the interplanetary magnetic field magnitude with high accuracies and the orientation of the magnetic field with moderate accuracies. Thus, this artificial neural network can be successfully used for inferring solar wind parameters at Mars. Since Mars lacks a dedicated solar wind monitor, unlike at Earth, this technique is useful for obtaining solar wind parameters during times when a Mars orbiter does not traverse through the solar wind upstream of Mars. Knowledge of the solar wind parameter values is essential for studying how the solar wind influences Mars' atmospheric escape. We analyze the planetary ion, solar wind, interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), and solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) irradiance data from the NASA Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission to quantify the variation in ion escape with solar EUV irradiance. With relatively strict constraints on the upstream solar wind and IMF conditions, we divide the planetary ion data into 4 subsets with different solar EUV conditions to estimate ion escape rates. The results show that the total ion escape rate may increase nonlinearly with solar EUV irradiance and eventually approach an asymptotic limit as EUV increases. Further analysis on different ion species, escape channels, and energy ranges show that the dependence on solar EUV varies between these different ion populations. We also find that the spatial distributions of ion density and velocity vary between high and low solar EUV conditions, which is likely caused by the variations of electromagnetic field distributions. These results suggest that as solar EUV controls the ion production and affects the ion distributions near Mars, it will in turn influence the electromagnetic field distributions and thus affect the acceleration of escaping ions. Coupling between the lower and upper atmosphere, combined with loss of gas from the upper atmosphere to space, likely contributed to the thin, cold, dry atmosphere of modern Mars. To help understand ongoing ion loss to space, the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft made comprehensive measurements of the Mars upper atmosphere, ionosphere, and interactions with the Sun and solar wind during an interplanetary coronal mass ejection impact in March 2015. Responses include changes in the bow shock and magnetosheath, formation of widespread diffuse aurora, and enhancement of pick-up ions. Observations and models both show an enhancement in escape rate of ions to space during the event. Ion loss during solar events early in Mars history may have been a major contributor to the long-term evolution of the Mars atmosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
