The central star of the planetary nebula (PN) HuBi 1 has been recently proposed to have experienced a very late thermal pulse (VLTP), but the dilution of the emission of the recent ejecta by that of the surrounding H-rich old outer shell has so far hindered confirming its suspected H-poor nature. We present here an analysis of the optical properties of the ejecta in the innermost regions of HuBi 1 using MEGARA high-dispersion integral field and OSIRIS intermediate-dispersion long-slit spectroscopic observations obtained with the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio de Canarias. The unprecedented tomographic capability of MEGARA to resolve structures in velocity space allowed us to disentangle for the first time the Hα and Hβ emission of the recent ejecta from that of the outer shell. The recent ejecta is found to have much higher extinction than the outer shell, implying the presence of large amounts of dust. The spatial distribution of the emission from the ejecta and the locus of key line ratios in diagnostic diagrams probe the shock excitation of the inner ejecta in HuBi 1, in stark contrast with the photoionization nature of the H-rich outer shell. The abundances of the recent ejecta have been computed using the MAPPINGS V code under a shock scenario. Stars with initial masses 7 Msun . MZAMS . 9 Msun reach temperatures high enough to ignite C under degenerate conditions after the end of He-core burning (Garcia-Berro & Iben 1994). These isolated stars are expected to evolve into the so-called super AGB (SAGB) phase and may end their lives as ultra-massive ONe WDs (see Siess 2006,2007, 2010; Camisassa et al. 2019, and references therein). The exact proportions of O and Ne found in the core at the end of the SAGB phase will determine the cooling times and pulsational properties of these WDs. Uncertainties affecting the rates of nuclear reactions occurring during the C burning phase should have a measurable impact on the distribution of 16O, 20Ne, 23Na and 24Mg and, consequently, on the evolution of the WD. Here we present a study of the impact of uncertainties in the 12C(12C, α)20Ne and 12C(12C, p)23Na nuclear reaction rates (and their branching ratios) on the chemical structure of intermediate- to high-mass progenitors at the end of the C-burning phase. Recently a new class of hot subluminous stars strongly enriched in C and O have been discovered (CO-sdOs). These stars show abundances very similar to those observed in PG1159 stars but at lower temperatures. Moreover, it has been recently suggested that C and O enrichment might be the key ingredient driving the pulsations in He-rich hot subdwarf stars (He-sdBVs). Here we argue that these two types of rare stars can be explained by a variant of one of the main channels forming hot subdwarf stars. The scenario involves the formation and merging of a He-core white dwarf and a less massive CO-core white dwarf. We have constructed a simple merger models and computed their subsequent evolution. The merger products are in agreement with the surface parameters and composition of CO-sdOs. In addition, we have performed simulations including the effects of element diffusion and the excitation of pulsations. These simulations show that less massive merger products can form stellar structures that have surface parameters, abundances, and pulsation periods similar to those displayed by He-sdBVs. We conclude that the proposed scenario, or some variant of it, offers a very plausible explanation for the formation of CO-sdOs, pulsating He-sdBs and low-luminosity PG1159 stars., 6 Pages, 4Figures. The mass of a star is the most fundamental parameter for its structure, evolution, and final fate. It is particularly important for any kind of stellar archaeology and characterization of exoplanets. There exist a variety of methods in astronomy to estimate or determine it. In this review we present a significant number of such methods, beginning with the most direct and model-independent approach using detached eclipsing binaries. We then move to more indirect and model-dependent methods, such as the quite commonly used isochrone or stellar track fitting. The arrival of quantitative asteroseismology has opened a completely new approach to determine stellar masses and to complement and improve the accuracy of other methods. We include methods for different evolutionary stages, from the pre-main sequence to evolved (super)giants and final remnants. For all methods uncertainties and restrictions will be discussed. We provide lists of altogether more than 200 benchmark stars with relative mass accuracies between [0.3 , 2] % for the covered mass range of M∈[0.1,16]M⊙, 75 % of which are stars burning hydrogen in their core and the other 25 % covering all other evolved stages. The gas dissipation from a protoplanetary disk is one of the key processes affecting planet formation, and it is widely accepted that it happens on timescales of a few million years for disks around single stars. Over the last years, several protoplanetary disks have been discovered in multiple star systems, and despite the complex environment in which they find themselves, some of them seem to be quite old, a situation that may favor planet formation. A clear example of this is the disk around HD 98800 B, a binary in a hierarchical quadruple stellar system, which at a $\sim$10 Myr age seems to still be holding significant amounts of gas. Here we present a 1D+1D model to compute the vertical structure and gas evolution of circumbinary disks in hierarchical triple star systems considering different stellar and disk parameters. We show that tidal torques due to the inner binary together with the truncation of the disk due to the external companion strongly reduce the viscous accretion and expansion of the disk. Even allowing viscous accretion by tidal streams, disks in these kind of environments can survive for more than 10 Myr, depending on their properties, with photoevaporation being the main gas dissipation mechanism. We particularly apply our model to the circumbinary disk around HD 98800 B and confirm that its longevity, along with the current non-existence of a disk around the companion binary HD 98800 A, can be explained with our model and by this mechanism., 20 pages, 9 figures. The nucleus of the planetary nebula Hen2-428 is a short orbital-period (4.2h), double-lined spectroscopic binary, whose status as a potential supernova type Ia progenitor has raised some controversy in the literature. With the aim of resolving this debate, we carried out an in-depth reanalysis of the system. Our approach combines a refined wavelength calibration, thorough line-identifications, improved radial-velocity measurements, non-LTE spectral modeling, as well as multi-band light-curve fitting. Our results are then discussed in view of state-of-the-art stellar evolutionary models. Besides systematic zero-point shifts in the wavelength calibration of the OSIRIS spectra which were also used in the previous analysis of the system, we found that the spectra are contaminated with diffuse interstellar bands. Our Voigt-profile radial velocity fitting method, which considers the additional absorption of these diffuse interstellar bands, reveals significantly lower masses ($M_1=0.66\pm0.11M_\odot$ and $M_2=0.42\pm0.07M_\odot$) than previously reported and a mass ratio that is clearly below unity. Our spectral and light curve analyses lead to consistent results, however, we find higher effective temperatures and smaller radii than previously reported. Moreover, we find that the red-excess that was reported before to prove to be a mere artifact of an outdated reddening law that was applied. Our work shows that blends of HeII 5412A with diffuse interstellar bands have led to an overestimation of the previously reported dynamical masses of Hen2-428. The merging event of Hen2-428 will not be recognised as a supernova type Ia, but most likely leads to the formation of a H-deficient star. [Context] With the advent of space-based asteroseismology, determining accurate properties of red-giant stars using their observed oscillations has become the focus of many investigations due to their implications in a variety of fields in astrophysics. Stellar models are fundamental in predicting quantities such as stellar age, and their reliability critically depends on the numerical implementation of the physics at play in this evolutionary phase., [Aims] We introduce the Aarhus red giants challenge, a series of detailed comparisons between widely used stellar evolution and oscillation codes that aim to establish the minimum level of uncertainties in properties of red giants arising solely from numerical implementations. We present the first set of results focusing on stellar evolution tracks and structures in the red-giant-branch (RGB) phase., [Methods] Using nine state-of-the-art stellar evolution codes, we defined a set of input physics and physical constants for our calculations and calibrated the convective efficiency to a specific point on the main sequence. We produced evolutionary tracks and stellar structure models at a fixed radius along the red-giant branch for masses of 1.0 M⊙, 1.5 M⊙, 2.0 M⊙, and 2.5 M⊙, and compared the predicted stellar properties., [Results] Once models have been calibrated on the main sequence, we find a residual spread in the predicted effective temperatures across all codes of ∼20 K at solar radius and ∼30–40 K in the RGB regardless of the considered stellar mass. The predicted ages show variations of 2–5% (increasing with stellar mass), which we attribute to differences in the numerical implementation of energy generation. The luminosity of the RGB-bump shows a spread of about 10% for the considered codes, which translates into magnitude differences of ∼0.1 mag in the optical V-band. We also compare the predicted [C/N] abundance ratio and find a spread of 0.1 dex or more for all considered masses., [Conclusions] Our comparisons show that differences at the level of a few percent still remain in evolutionary calculations of red giants branch stars despite the use of the same input physics. The treatment of convective boundaries remains an important source of uncertainty within stellar evolution, with drastic implications for the thermally-pulsing stars on the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB). Various sources are taken as motivation for the incorporation of convective boundary mixing during this phase, from s-process nucleosynthesis to hydrodynamical models. In spite of the considerable evidence in favour of the existence of convective boundary mixing on the pre-AGB evolution, this mixing is not universally included in models of TP-AGB stars. The aim of this investigation is to ascertain the extent of convective boundary mixing, which is compatible with observations when considering full evolutionary models. Additionally, we investigate a theoretical argument that has been made that momentum-driven overshooting at the base of the pulse-driven convection zone should be negligible. We show that, while the argument holds,estimations based on the picture of turbulent entrainment suggest that mixing is possible at both convective boundaries. We demonstrate that additional mixing at convective boundaries during core-burning phases prior to the thermally-pulsing Asymptotic Giant Branch has an impact on the later evolution, changing the mass range at which the third dredge-up and hot-bottom burning occur, and thus also the final surface composition. In addition, an effort has been made to constrain the efficiency of convective boundary mixing at the different convective boundaries, using observational constraints. Our study suggests a strong tension between different constraints that makes it impossible to reproduce all observables simultaneously within the framework of an exponentially decaying overshooting. All evolved stars with masses $M_\star\lesssim 2M_\odot$ undergo a helium(He)-core flash at the end of their first stage as a giant star. Although theoretically predicted more than 50 years ago, this core-flash phase has yet to be observationally probed. We show here that gravity modes (g modes) stochastically excited by He-flash driven convection are able to reach the stellar surface, and induce periodic photometric variabilities in hot-subdwarf stars with amplitudes of the order of a few mmag. As such they can now be detected by space-based photometry with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) in relatively bright stars (e.g. magnitudes $I_C\lesssim 13$). The range of predicted periods spans from a few thousand seconds to tens of thousand seconds, depending on the details of the excitation region. In addition, we find that stochastically excited pulsations reproduce the pulsations observed in a couple of He-rich hot subdwarf stars. These stars, and in particular the future TESS target Feige 46, are the most promising candidates to probe the He-core flash for the first time., 14 Figures including Supplementary Information. The transition from the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) to the final white dwarf (WD) stage is arguably the least understood phase in the evolution of single low- and intermediate-mass stars ($0.8 \lesssim M_{\rm ZAMS}/M_\odot\lesssim 8...10$). Here we briefly review the progress in the last 50 years of the modeling of stars during the post-AGB phase. We show that although the main features, like the extreme mass dependency of post-AGB timescales were already present in the earliest post-AGB models, the quantitative values of the computed post-AGB timescales changed every time new physics was included in the modeling of post-AGB stars and their progenitors. Context. Asteroseismology of white dwarf stars is a powerful tool that allows us to reveal the hidden chemical structure of white dwarfs and infer details about their present and past evolution by comparing the observed periods with those obtained from appropriate stellar models. A recent asteroseismological study has reproduced the period spectrum of the helium-rich pulsating white dwarf KIC 08626021 with the unprecedented precision of (Pobs − Pmodel)/Pmodel < 10⁻⁸ . The chemical structure derived from that asteroseismological analysis is notably different from that expected for a white dwarf according to currently accepted formation channels. It therefore poses a challenge to the theory of stellar evolution. Aims. We explore the relevant micro- and macrophysics processes that act during the formation and evolution of KIC 08626021 and might lead to a chemical structure similar to that found through asteroseismology. We quantify to which extent it is necessary to modify the physical processes that shape the chemical structure in order to reproduce the most important features of the asteroseismic model. Methods. We modeled the previous evolution of KIC 08626021 by exploring specific changes in the ¹²C(α, γ) ¹⁶O reaction rate, screening processes, microscopic diffusion, and convective boundary mixing during core-He burning. Results. We find that in order to reproduce the core chemical profile derived for KIC 0862602, the ¹²C+α nuclear reaction rate has to be increased by a factor of ∼10 during the helium-core burning, and reduced by a factor of ∼1000 during the following helium-shell burning as compared with the standard predictions for this rate. In addition, the main chemical structures derived for KIC 0862602, such as the very thin helium-pure envelope, the mass of the carbon-oxygen core, and the pure C buffer, cannot be reconciled with our current knowledge of white dwarf formation. We find that within our current understanding of white dwarf formation and evolution, it is difficult to reproduce the most important asteroseismologically derived features of the chemical structure of KIC 08626021., Instituto de Astrofísica de La Plata

We present Gemini-South observations of nine faint and extended planetary nebulae (PNe). Using direct images taken with the spectrograph Gemini-South multi-object spectrograph (GMOS), we built the (u g ¢- ¢) versus (g r ¢- ¢) diagrams of the stars in the observed areas which allowed us to consider their geometrical positions and identify the probable central stars of the nebulae. Our stellar spectra of seven stars, also taken with GMOS, indicate that four (and probably two more) objects are white dwarfs of the DAO subtype. Moreover, the white dwarf status of the four stars is confirmed by the parameters Teff and log g derived with the help of theoretical stellar spectra. Given this evidence, we propose that these hot stars are the central ionizing sources of the nebulae. Stars are extremely important astronomical objects that constitute the pillars on which the Universe is built, and as such, their study has gained increasing interest over the years. White dwarf stars are not the exception. Indeed, these stars constitute the final evolutionary stage for more than 95% of all stars. The Galactic population of white dwarfs conveys a wealth of information about several fundamental issues and are of vital importance to study the structure, evolution and chemical enrichment of our Galaxy and its components—including the star formation history of the Milky Way. Several important studies have emphasized the advantage of using white dwarfs as reliable clocks to date a variety of stellar populations in the solar neighborhood and in the nearest stellar clusters, including the thin and thick disks, the Galactic spheroid and the system of globular and open clusters. In addition, white dwarfs are tracers of the evolution of planetary systems along several phases of stellar evolution. Not less relevant than these applications, the study of matter at high densities has benefited from our detailed knowledge about evolutionary and observational properties of white dwarfs. In this sense, white dwarfs are used as laboratories for astro-particle physics, being their interest focused on physics beyond the standard model, that is, neutrino physics, axion physics and also radiation from “extra dimensions”, and even crystallization. The last decade has witnessed a great progress in the study of white dwarfs. In particular, a wealth of information of these stars from different surveys has allowed us to make meaningful comparison of evolutionary models with observations. While some information like surface chemical composition, temperature and gravity of isolated white dwarfs can be inferred from spectroscopy, and the total mass and radius can be derived as well when they are in binaries, the internal structure of these compact stars can be unveiled only by means of asteroseismology, an approach based on the comparison between the observed pulsation periods of variable stars and the periods predicted by appropriate theoretical models. The asteroseismological techniques allow us to infer details of the internal chemical stratification, the total mass, and even the stellar rotation profile. In this review, we first revise the evolutionary channels currently accepted that lead to the formation of white-dwarf stars, and then, we give a detailed account of the different sub-types of pulsating white dwarfs known so far, emphasizing the recent observational and theoretical advancements in the study of these fascinating variable stars., Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas

Stellar post asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) evolution can be completely altered by a final thermal pulse (FTP) which may occur when the star is still leaving the AGB (AFTP), at the departure from the AGB at still constant luminosity (late TP, LTP) or after the entry to the white-dwarf cooling sequence (very late TP, VLTP). Then convection mixes the He-rich material with the H-rich envelope. According to stellar evolution models the result is a star with a surface composition of $\mathrm{H}\approx\,20\,$% by mass (AFTP), $\approx 1\,$% (LTP), or (almost) no H (VLTP). Since FTP stars exhibit intershell material at their surface, spectral analyses establish constraints for AGB nucleosynthesis and stellar evolution. We performed a spectral analysis of the so-called hybrid PG 1159-type central stars (CS) of the planetary nebulae Abell 43 and NGC7094 by means of non-local thermodynamical equilibrium models. We confirm the previously determined effective temperatures of $T_\mathrm{eff} = 115\,000\pm 5\,000\,$K and determine surface gravities of $\log (g\,/\,\mathrm{cm/s^2}) = 5.6\pm 0.1$ for both. From a comparison with AFTP evolutionary tracks, we derive stellar masses of $0.57^{+0.07}_{-0.04}\,M_\odot$ and determine the abundances of H, He, and metals up to Xe. Both CS are likely AFTP stars with a surface H mass fraction of $0.25 \pm 0.03$ and $0.15 \pm 0.03$, respectively, and a Fe deficiency indicating subsolar initial metallicities. The light metals show typical PG 1159-type abundances and the elemental composition is in good agreement with predictions from AFTP evolutionary models. Ultra-massive white dwarfs are powerful tools to study various physical processes in the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB), type Ia supernova explosions and the theory of crystallization through white dwarf asteroseismology. Despite the interest in these white dwarfs, there are few evolutionary studies in the literature devoted to them. Here, we present new ultra-massive white dwarf evolutionary sequences that constitute an improvement over previous ones. In these new sequences, we take into account for the first time the process of phase separation expected during the crystallization stage of these white dwarfs, by relying on the most up-to-date phase diagram of dense oxygen/neon mixtures. Realistic chemical profiles resulting from the full computation of progenitor evolution during the semidegenerate carbon burning along the super-AGB phase are also considered in our sequences. Outer boundary conditions for our evolving models are provided by detailed non-gray white dwarf model atmospheres for hydrogen and helium composition. We assessed the impact of all these improvements on the evolutionary properties of ultra-massive white dwarfs, providing up-dated evolutionary sequences for these stars. We conclude that crystallization is expected to affect the majority of the massive white dwarfs observed with effective temperatures below $40\,000\, \rm K$. Moreover, the calculation of the phase separation process induced by crystallization is necessary to accurately determine the cooling age and the mass-radius relation of massive white dwarfs. We also provide colors in the GAIA photometric bands for our H-rich white dwarf evolutionary sequences on the basis of new models atmospheres. Finally, these new white dwarf sequences provide a new theoretical frame to perform asteroseismological studies on the recently detected ultra-massive pulsating white dwarfs., 13 pages, 15 figures, 4 tables. The Bright Star in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae (NGC 104) is a post-AGB star of spectral type B8 III. The ultraviolet spectra of late-B stars exhibit a myriad of absorption features, many due to species unobservable from the ground. The Bright Star thus represents a unique window into the chemistry of 47 Tuc. We have analyzed observations obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope, and the MIKE Spectrograph on the Magellan Telescope. By fitting these data with synthetic spectra, we determine various stellar parameters (T_eff = 10,850 +/- 250 K, log g = 2.20 +/- 0.13) and the photospheric abundances of 26 elements, including Ne, P, Cl, Ga, Pd, In, Sn, Hg, and Pb, which have not previously been published for this cluster. Abundances of intermediate-mass elements (Mg through Ga) generally scale with Fe, while the heaviest elements (Pd through Pb) have roughly solar abundances. Its low C/O ratio indicates that the star did not undergo third dredge-up and suggests that its heavy elements were made by a previous generation of stars. If so, this pattern should be present throughout the cluster, not just in this star. Stellar-evolution models suggest that the Bright Star is powered by a He-burning shell, having left the AGB during or immediately after a thermal pulse. Its mass (0.54 +/- 0.16 M_sun) implies that single stars in 47 Tuc lose 0.1--0.2 M_sun on the AGB, only slightly less than they lose on the RGB., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

Identifying progenitor systems for the double-degenerate scenario is crucial to check the reliability of type Ia super-novae as cosmological standard candles. Santander-Garcia et al. (2015) claimed that Hen 2-428 has a double-degenerate core whose combined mass significantly exceeds the Chandrasekhar limit. Together with the short orbital period (4.2 hours), the authors concluded that the system should merge within a Hubble time triggering a type Ia supernova event. Garcia-Berro et al. (2016) explored alternative scenarios to explain the observational evidence, as the high mass conclusion is highly unlikely within predictions from stellar evolution theory. They conclude that the evidence supporting the supernova progenitor status of the system is premature. Here we present the first quantitative spectral analysis of Hen 2-428 which allows us to derive the effective temperatures, surface gravities and helium abundance of the two CSPNe based on state-of-the-art, non-LTE model atmospheres. Aims. Hot subdwarf stars represent a poorly understood late phase of stellar evolution. While binary evolution plays an important role for the formation of B-Type subdwarfs (sdB), the origin of the helium dominated subclass of O-Type subdwarfs (He-sdO) is still unknown. We search for chemical signatures of their genesis by means of quantitative spectral analyses of high-quality visual and ultraviolet spectra. Methods. Four prototypical He-sdO stars, one belonging to the nitrogen-rich and three to the C-rich subclass, were selected for which archival far-ultraviolet spectra from the FUSE satellite as well as high-resolution visual and UVA spectra taken with the ESO-UVES/FEROS spectrographs are available. Using TLUSTY200/SYNSPEC49 to compute line blanketed-non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) model atmospheres and synthetic spectra, atmospheric parameters and the abundances patterns have been derived. The final models included H, He, C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Fe, and Ni represented by the most detailed model atoms available. Because of the enrichment of either nitrogen or carbon, it turned out, that models including these elements at the appropriate high abundance provide sufficiently accurate approximations to the temperature stratification of full models. Results. No indications for binarity were found, neither radial velocity variations nor photometric evidence for the presence of a companion could be detected. All stars have helium-dominated atmospheres almost free of hydrogen and temperatures between 42 000 K and 47 000 K while their surface gravities lie between log g = 5.4 and 5.7. The abundance pattern of CD-31°4800 displays the signatures of CNO burning, while heavier elements are subsolar by about 0.4 dex, except for Ne and Si which are close to solar. The abundance patterns of the C-rich He-sdOs are more complex. A slightly subsolar metallicity is accompanied by N-enrichment and O-deficiency, less pronounced than in CD-31°4800. Neon is mildly to strongly enriched, up to a factor of ten with respect to the sun in LS IV + 10° 9. The nickel-to-iron ratio is significantly super-solar. Using spectral energy distributions and Gaia parallaxes the masses of the stars were determined. They are found to scatter around the canonical mass for the core helium flash, although the uncertainties are large. Conclusions. The abundance pattern observed for CD-31°4800 is consistent with predictions of models for slow (cold) mergers of pairs of equal mass helium WDs except for the low oxygen abundance observed. Models for composite mergers were considered for the C-rich stars, but predict abundance pattern dissimilar to those determined. [CW83] 0904-02, though, may be a candidate for a composite He-WD merger, as it rotates and appears to be more massive than the other program stars. New evolutionary models for the hot flasher scenario predict abundance patterns similar to those determined for the C-rich stars. The nucleus of Hen 2-428 is a short orbital period (4.2 h) spectroscopic binary, whose status as potential supernovae type Ia progenitor has raised some controversy in the literature. We present preliminary results of a thorough analysis of this interesting system, which combines quantitative non-local thermodynamic (non-LTE) equilibrium spectral modelling, radial velocity analysis, multi-band light curve fitting, and state-of-the art stellar evolutionary calculations. Importantly, we find that the dynamical system mass that is derived by using all available He II lines does not exceed the Chandrasekhar mass limit. Furthermore, the individual masses of the two central stars are too small to lead to an SN Ia in case of a dynamical explosion during the merger process., Instituto de Astrofísica de La Plata

The $\epsilon$ mechanism is a self-excitation mechanism of stellar pulsations which acts in regions inside the star where nuclear burning takes place. It has been shown that the $\epsilon$ mechanism can excite pulsations in models of hot pre-horizontal branch stars, and that the shortest periods of LS IV-14$^{\circ}$116 could be explained that way. We aim to study the $\epsilon$ mechanism in stellar models appropriate for hot pre-horizontal branch stars to predict their pulsational properties and the instability domain in the $\log g-\log T_{\rm eff}$ plane. We perform detailed computations of non-adiabatic non-radial pulsations on stellar models during the helium subflashes just before the helium-core burning phase. We find an instability domain of long-period gravity modes due to the $\epsilon$ mechanism in the $\log g-\log T_{\rm eff}$ plane at roughly $22000\,{\rm K} \lesssim T_{\rm eff}\lesssim 50000\,$K and $4.67 \lesssim \log g \lesssim 6.15$. Consequently, we find instabilities due to the $\epsilon$ mechanism on pre-extreme horizontal branch stellar models ($T_{\rm eff}\gtrsim 22000\,$K), but not on pre-blue horizontal branch stellar models ($T_{\rm eff}\lesssim 21000\,$K). The periods of excited modes range between $\sim 200$ and $\sim2000\,$s. Comparison with the three known pulsating He-rich subdwarfs shows that $\epsilon$ mechanism can excite gravity modes in stars with similar surface properties, but in our models it is only able to excite modes in the range of the shortest observed periods. We predict a new instability strip for hot-subdwarf stars of which LS IV-14$^{\circ}$116 could be the first inhabitant. Based on simple estimates we expect 1 to 10 stars in the current samples of hot-subdwarf stars to be pulsating by the $\epsilon$ mechanism. Planetary nebulae are ionized clouds of gas formed by the hydrogen-rich envelopes of low- and intermediate-mass stars ejected at late evolutionary stages. The strong UV flux from their central stars causes a highly stratified ionization structure, with species of higher ionization potential closer to the star. Here, we report on the exceptional case of HuBi 1, a double-shell planetary nebula whose inner shell presents emission from low-ionization species close to the star and emission from high-ionization species farther away. Spectral analysis demonstrates that the inner shell of HuBi 1 is excited by shocks, whereas its outer shell is recombining. The anomalous excitation of these shells can be traced to its low-temperature [WC10] central star whose optical brightness has declined continuously by 10 magnitudes in a period of 46 years. Evolutionary models reveal that this star is the descendant of a low-mass star (≃1.1 M) that has experienced a ‘born-again’ event whose ejecta shock-excite the inner shell. HuBi 1 represents the missing link in the formation of metal-rich central stars of planetary nebulae from low-mass progenitors, offering unique insight regarding the future evolution of the born-again Sakurai’s object. The primary goal of this paper is to make a direct comparison between the measured and model-predicted abundances of He, C, and N in a sample of 35 well-observed Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe). All observations, data reductions, and abundance determinations were performed in house to ensure maximum homogeneity. Progenitor star masses (M ≤ 4M⊙) were inferred using two published sets of post-asymptotic giant branch model tracks and L and Teff values. We conclude the following: (1) the mean values of N/O across the progenitor mass range exceeds the solar value, indicating significant N enrichment in the majority of our objects; (2) the onset of hot bottom burning appears to begin around 2 M⊙, i.e. lower than ~5M⊙ implied by theory; (3) most of our objects show a clear He enrichment, as expected from dredge-up episodes; (4) the average sample C/O value is 1.23, consistent with the effects of third dredge up; and (5) model grids used to compare to observations successfully span the distribution over metallicity space of all C/O and many He/H data points but mostly fail to do so in the case of N/O. The evident enrichment of N in PN and the general discrepancy between the observed and model-predicted N/O abundance ratios signal the need for extra mixing as an effect of rotation and/or thermohaline mixing in the models. We have analyzed FUSE, COS, GHRS, and Keck HIRES spectra of the UV-bright star Barnard 29 in M13 (NGC 6205). By comparing the photospheric abundances derived from multiple ionization states of C, N, O, Si, and S, we infer an effective temperature T_eff = 21,400 +/- 400 K. Balmer-line fits yield a surface gravity log g = 3.10 +/- 0.03. We derive photospheric abundances of He, C, N, O, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, and Ge. Barnard 29 exhibits an abundance pattern typical of the first-generation stars in M13, enhanced in oxygen and depleted in aluminum. An underabundance of C and an overabundance of N suggest that the star experienced nonconvective mixing on the RGB. We see no evidence of significant chemical evolution since the star left the RGB; in particular, it did not undergo third dredge-up. Previous workers found that the star's FUV spectra yield an iron abundance about 0.5 dex lower than its optical spectrum, but the iron abundances derived from all of our spectra are consistent with the cluster value. We attribute this difference to our use of model atmospheres without microturbulence, which is ruled out by careful fits to optical absorption features. We derive a mass M_*/M_sun = 0.45 - 0.55 and luminosity log (L_*/L_sun) = 3.26 - 3.35. Comparison with stellar-evolution models suggests that Barnard 29 evolved from a ZAHB star of mass M_*/M_sun between 0.50 and 0.55, near the boundary between the extreme and blue horizontal branches., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures

The post-asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase is arguably one of the least understood phases of the evolution of low- and intermediate- mass stars. The recent post-AGB evolutionary sequences computed by Miller Bertolami (2016) are at least three to ten times faster than those previously published by Vassiliadis & Wood (1994) and Bloecker (1995) which have been used in a large number of studies. This is true for the whole mass and metallicity range. The new models are also $\sim$0.1-0.3 dex brighter than the previous models with similar remnant masses. For 32 central stars of PNe we present their parameters interpolated among the new evolutionary sequences. The derived stellar final masses are confined between 0.53 and 0.58 $M_\odot$ in good agreement with the peak in the white dwarf mass distribution. Consequently, the inferred star formation history of the Galactic bulge is well restricted between 3 and 11 Gyr and is compatible with other published studies. The new evolutionary tracks proved a very good as a tool for analysis of late stages of stars life. Systematic photometric and asteroseismological studies in the last decade support the belief that white dwarfs in the solar neighborhood harbor a broad range of hydrogen-layer contents. The reasons behind this spread of hydrogen-layer masses are not understood and usually misunderstood. SAO 244567 is a rare example of a star that allows us to witness stellar evolution in real time. Between 1971 and 1990, it changed from a B-type star into the hot central star of the Stingray Nebula. This observed rapid heating has been a mystery for decades, since it is in strong contradiction with the low mass of the star and canonical post-asymptotic giant branch (AGB) evolution. We speculated that SAO 244567 might have suffered from a late thermal pulse (LTP) and obtained new observations with Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/COS to follow the evolution of the surface properties of SAO 244567 and to verify the LTP hypothesis. Our non-LTE spectral analysis reveals that the star cooled significantly since 2002 and that its envelope is now expanding. Therefore, we conclude that SAO 244567 is currently on its way back towards the AGB, which strongly supports the LTP hypothesis. A comparison with state-of-the-art LTP evolutionary calculations shows that these models cannot fully reproduce the evolution of all surface parameters simultaneously, pointing out possible shortcomings of stellar evolution models. The Peccei-Quinn mechanism proposed to solve the CP problem of Quantum Chromodynamics has as consequence the existence of axions, hypothetical weakly interacting particles whose mass is constrained to be on the sub-eV range. If these particles exist and interact with electrons, they would be emitted from the dense interior of white dwarfs, becoming an important energy sink for the star. Due to their well known physics, white dwarfs are good laboratories to study the properties of fundamental particles such as the axions. We study the general effect of axion emission on the evolution of helium-rich white dwarfs and on their pulsational properties. To this aim, we calculate evolutionary helium-rich white dwarf models with axion emission, and assess the pulsational properties of this models. Our results indicate that the rates of change of pulsation periods are significantly affected by the existence of axions. We are able for the first time to independently constrain the mass of the axion from the study of pulsating helium-rich white dwarfs. To do this, we use an estimation of the rate of change of period of the pulsating white dwarf PG 1351+489 corresponding to the dominant pulsation period. From an asteroseismological model of PG 1351+489 we obtain gae < 3.3 × 10−13 for the axion-electron coupling constant, or ma cos2 β . 11.5 meV for the axion mass. This constraint is relaxed to gae < 5.5 × 10−13 (ma cos2 β . 19.5 meV), when no detailed asteroseismological model is adopted for the comparison with observations., Instituto de Astrofísica de La Plata, Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas

Recently Pasetto et al. have proposed a new method to derive a convection theory appropriate for the implementation in stellar evolution codes. Their approach is based on the simple physical picture of spherical bubbles moving within a potential flow in dynamically unstable regions, and a detailed computation of the bubble dynamics. Based on this approach, the authors derive a new theory of convection which is claimed to be parameter-free, non-local and time-dependent. This is a very strong claim, as such a theory is the holy grail of stellar physics. Unfortunately, we have identified several distinct problems in the derivation which ultimately render their theory inapplicable to any physical regime. Aims. We present an asteroseismological study on the two high-gravity pulsating PG 1159 (GW Vir or DOV) stars, PG 2131+066 and PG 1707+427, and on the pulsating [WCE] star NGC 1501. All of these stars have been intensively scrutinized through multi-site observations, so they have well resolved pulsation spectra.Methods. We compute adiabatic g-mode pulsation periods on PG 1159 evolutionary models with stellar masses ranging from 0.530 to 0.741M. These models take into account the complete evolution of progenitor stars, through the thermally pulsing AGB phase, and born-again episode. We constrain the stellar mass of PG 2131+066, PG 1707+427, and NGC 1501 by comparing the observed period spacing with the asymptotic period spacing and with the average of the computed period spacings. We also employ the individual observed periods in search of representative seismological models for each star.Results. We derive a stellar mass of 0.627 M for PG 2131+066, 0.597 M for PG 1707+427, and 0.571 M for NGC 1501 from a comparison between the observed period spacings and the computed asymptotic period spacings, and a stellar mass of 0.627 M for PG 2131+066, 0.597 M for PG 1707+427, and 0.571 M for NGC 1501 by comparing the observed period spacings with the average of the computed period spacings. We also find, on the basis of a period-fit procedure, asteroseismological models representatives of PG 2131+066 and PG 1707+427. These best-fit models are able to reproduce the observed period patterns of these stars with an average of the period differences of δII=1.57 s and δII 1.75 s, respectively. The best-fit model for PG 2131+066 has an effective temperature Teff = 102 100 K, a stellar mass M = 0.589 M, a surface gravity logg = 7.63, a stellar luminosity and radius of log(L/L) = 1.57 and log(R/R) = -1.71, respectively, and a He-rich envelope thickness of Menv = 1.6 10-2 M. We derive a seismic distance d ̃ 830 pc and a parallax π ̃ 1.2 mas. The best-fit model for PG 1707+427, on the other hand, has Teff = 89 500 K, M = 0.542 M, logg = 7.53, log(L/L) = 1.40, log(R/R) = -1.68, and Menv = 2.5 10-2 M, and the seismic distance and parallax are d ̃ 730 pc and π ̃ 1.4 mas. Finally, we have been unable to find an unambiguous best-fit model for NGC 1501 on the basis of a period-fit procedure.Conclusions. This work closes our short series of asteroseismological studies on pulsating pre-white dwarf stars. Our results demonstrate the usefulness of asteroseismology for probing the internal structure and evolutionary status of pre-white dwarf stars. Because of the large neutron excess of 22Ne, sedimentation of this isotope occurs rapidly in the interior of white dwarfs. This process releases an additional amount of energy, thus delaying the cooling times of the white dwarf. This influences the ages of different stellar populations derived using white dwarf cosmochronology. Furthermore, the overabundance of 22Ne in the inner regions of the star modifies the Brunt-Väisälä frequency, thus altering the pulsational properties of these stars. In this work we discuss the impact of 22Ne sedimentation in white dwarfs resulting from solar metallicity progenitors (Z = 0.02). We performed evolutionary calculations of white dwarfs with masses of 0.528, 0.576, 0.657, and 0.833 derived from full evolutionary computations of their progenitor stars, starting at the zero-Age main sequence all the way through the central hydrogen and helium burning, the thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch (AGB), and post-AGB phases. Our computations show that at low luminosities (), 22Ne sedimentation delays the cooling of white dwarfs with solar metallicity progenitors by about 1 Gyr. Additionally, we studied the consequences of 22Ne sedimentation on the pulsational properties of ZZ Ceti white dwarfs. We employ an asteroseismic model of L19-2, a relatively massive M? ∼ 0.75M and hot (Teff ∼ 12 100 K) pulsating DA (H-rich atmosphere) white dwarf star (DAV or ZZ Ceti variable), and use the observed values of the temporal rates of period change of its dominant pulsation modes (Π ∼ 113 s and Π ∼ 192 s), to derive a new constraint on the mass of the axion, the hypothetical non-barionic particle considered as a possible component of the dark matter of the Universe. If the asteroseismic model employed is an accurate representation of L19-2, then our results indicate hints of extra cooling in this star, compatible with emission of axions of mass ma cos2 β . 25 meV or an axion-electron coupling constant of gae . 7×10−13, Instituto de Astrofísica de La Plata, Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas

It has been shown that the shape of the luminosity function of white dwarfs (WDLF) is a powerful tool to check for the possible existence of DFSZ-axions, a proposed but not yet detected type of weakly interacting particles. With the aim of deriving new constraints on the axion mass, we compute in this paper new theoretical WDLFs on the basis of WD evolving models that incorporate the feedback of axions on the thermal structure of the white dwarf. We find that the impact of the axion emission into the neutrino emission can not be neglected at high luminosities MBol ≲ 8 ) and that the axion emission needs to be incorporated self-consistently into the evolution of the white dwarfs when dealing with axion masses larger than ma cos2β ≳5 meV (i.e. axion-electron coupling constant gae 1.4× 10-13). We went beyond previous works by including 5 different derivations of the WDLF in our analysis. Then we have performed χ2-tests to have a quantitative measure of the agreement between the theoretical WDLFs - computed under the assumptions of different axion masses and normalization methods - - and the observed WDLFs of the Galactic disk. While all the WDLF studied in this work disfavour axion masses in the range suggested by asteroseismology ma cos2β 10 meV; gae 2.8× 10-13) lower axion masses can not be discarded from our current knowledge of the WDLF of the Galactic Disk. A larger set of completely independent derivations of the WDLF of the galactic disk as well as a detailed study of the uncertainties of the theoretical WDLFs is needed before quantitative constraints on the axion-electron coupling constant can be made., Instituto de Astrofísica de La Plata, Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas

Context. The number of detected extremely low-mass (ELM) white dwarf stars has increased drastically in recent years, thanks to the results of many surveys. In addition, some of these stars have been found to exhibit pulsations, making them potential targets for asteroseismology. Aims. We provide a fine and homogeneous grid of evolutionary sequences for helium (He) core white dwarfs for the whole range of their expected masses (0.15 M*/M 0.45), including the mass range for ELM white dwarfs (M*/M 0.20). The grid is appropriate for mass and age determination of these stars, as well as for studying their adiatabic pulsational properties. Methods. White dwarf sequences have been computed by performing full evolutionary calculations that consider the main energy sources and processes of chemical abundance changes during white dwarf evolution. Realistic initial models for the evolving white dwarfs have been obtained by computing the nonconservative evolution of a binary system consisting of an initially 1 M ZAMS star and a 1.4 M neutron star for various initial orbital periods. To derive cooling ages and masses for He-core white dwarfs, we perform a least square fitting of the M(Teff,g) and Age(Teff,g) relations provided by our sequences by using a scheme that takes into account the time spent by models in different regions of the Teff - g plane. This is particularly useful when multiple solutions for cooling age and mass determinations are possible in the case of CNO-flashing sequences. We also explore in a preliminary way the adiabatic pulsational properties of models near the critical mass for the development of CNO flashes (0.2 M). This is motivated by the discovery of pulsating white dwarfs with stellar masses near this threshold value. Results. We obtain reliable and homogeneous mass and cooling age determinations for 58 very low-mass white dwarfs, including three pulsating stars. Also, we find substantial differences in the period spacing distributions of g-modes for models with stellar masses near 0.2 M, which could be used as a seismic tool to distinguish stars that have undergone CNO flashes in their early cooling phase from those that have not. Context. White dwarf evolution is essentially a gravothermal cooling process, which, for cool white dwarfs, depends on the treatment of the outer boundary conditions. Aims. We provide detailed outer boundary conditions that are appropriate to computing the evolution of cool white dwarfs by employing detailed nongray model atmospheres for pure hydrogen composition. We also explore the impact on the white dwarf cooling times of different assumptions for energy transfer in the atmosphere of cool white dwarfs. Methods. Detailed nongray model atmospheres were computed by considering nonideal effects in the gas equation of state and chemical equilibrium, collision-induced absorption from molecules, and the Lyman α quasi-molecular opacity. We explored the impact of outer boundary conditions provided by updated model atmospheres on the cooling times of 0.60 and 0.90 M white dwarf sequences. Results. Our results show that the use of detailed outer boundary conditions becomes relevant for effective temperatures lower than 5800 K for sequences with 0.60 M and 6100 K with 0.90 M. Detailed model atmospheres predict ages that are up to ≈ 10% shorter at log (L/L) =-4 when compared with the ages derived using Eddington-like approximations at τ Ross = 2/3. We also analyze the effects of various assumptions and physical processes that are relevant in the calculation of outer boundary conditions. In particular, we find that the Lyα red wing absorption does not substantially affect the evolution of white dwarfs. Conclusions. White dwarf cooling timescales are sensitive to the surface boundary conditions for T eff ≤ 6000 K. Interestingly enough, nongray effects have few consequences on these cooling times at observable luminosities. In fact, collision-induced absorption processes, which significantly affect the spectra and colors of old white dwarfs with hydrogen-rich atmospheres, have no noticeable effects on their cooling rates, except throughout the Rosseland mean opacity., Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas

We present results of an ongoing study of the pulsational properties of sdB stellar models aimed at exploring the consequences of detailed chemical transitions for radial, $p-$ and $g-$ modes. In particular, we focus on the effects of diffusion at the H-He transition and of He-burning at the convective cores. We find that diffusion of He and H has a strong impact on the period spectrum of sdBVs stars, leading to less efficient mode trapping. Our results also suggests that asteroseismology of sdBVs stars might offer a very good opportunity to constrain extramixing processes in the He-burning cores of horizontal branch stars., 6 Figures, 10 pages. Context. Cool white dwarfs are reliable and independent stellar chronometers. The most common white dwarfs have carbon-oxygen dense cores. Consequently, the cooling ages of very cool white dwarfs sensitively depend on the adopted phase diagram of the carbon-oxygen binary mixture. Aims. A new phase diagram of dense carbon-oxygen mixtures appropriate for white dwarf interiors has been recently obtained using direct molecular dynamics simulations. In this paper, we explore the consequences of this phase diagram in the evolution of cool white dwarfs. Methods. To do this we employ a detailed stellar evolutionary code and accurate initial white dwarf configurations, derived from the full evolution of progenitor stars. We use two different phase diagrams, that of Horowitz et al. (2010, Phys. Rev. Lett., 104, 231101), which presents an azeotrope, and the phase diagram of Segretain & Chabrier (1993, A&A, 271, L13), which is of the spindle form. Results. We computed the evolution of 0.593 and 0.878 M ⊙ white dwarf models during the crystallization phase, and we found that the energy released by carbon-oxygen phase separation is smaller when the new phase diagram of Horowitz et al. is used. This translates into time delays that are on average a factor ∼2 smaller than those obtained when the phase diagram of Segretain & Chabrier is employed. Conclusions. Our results have important implications for white dwarf cosmochronology, because the cooling ages of very old white dwarfs are different for the two phase diagrams. We put asteroseismological constraints on the internal rotation profile of the GW Vir (PG1159-type) star PG 0122+200. To this end we employ a state-of-the-art asteroseismological model for this star and we assess the expected frequency splittings induced by rotation adopting a forward approach in which we compare the theoretical frequency separations with the observed ones assuming different types of plausible internal rotation profiles. We also employ two asteroseismological inversion methods for the inversion of the rotation profile of PG 0122+200. We find evidence for differential rotation in this star. We demonstrate that the frequency splittings of the rotational multiplets exhibited by PG 0122+200 are compatible with a rotation profile in which the central regions are spinning about 2.4 times faster than the stellar surface., 8 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. We investigate the pulsation driving mechanism responsible for the long-period photometric variations observed in LS IV-14��116, a subdwarf B star showing a He-enriched atmospheric composition. To this end, we perform detailed nonadiabatic pulsation computations over fully evolutionary post He-core-flash stellar structure models, appropriate for hot subdwarf stars at evolutionary phases previous to the He-core burning stage. We found that the variability of LS IV-14��116 can be attributed to nonradial g-mode pulsations excited by the ��-mechanism acting in the He-burning shells that appear before the star settles on the He-core burning stage. Even more interestingly, our results show that LS IV-14��116 could be the first known pulsating star in which the ��-mechanism of mode excitation is operating. Last but not least, we find that the period range of destabilized modes is sensitive to the exact location of the burning shell, something that might help to distinguish between the different evolutionary scenarios proposed for the formation of this star., 4 figures, 1 table, 4 pages, Accepted for publication in ApJL

We investigate the internal rotation profile of the GW Vir (PG1159-type) star PG 0122+200 by employing an asteroseismological model that closely reproduces the observed periods of this star. We adopt a forward approach and two inversion methods based on the rotational splitting of the pulsation frequencies to explore the properties of the rotation of PG 0122+200. We perform an asteroseismological study on the DAV star G117-B15A on the basis of a modern set of fully evolutionary DA white dwarf models that have consistent chemical profiles at the core and the envelope. We found an asteroseismological model for G117-B15A that closely reproduces its observed pulsation periods. We present full evolutionary calculations appropriate for the study of hydrogen-rich DA white dwarfs. This is done by evolving white dwarf progenitors from the zero-age main sequence, through the core hydrogen-burning phase, the helium-burning phase, and the thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch phase to the white dwarf stage. Complete evolutionary sequences are computed for a wide range of stellar masses and for two different metallicities, Z = 0.01, which is representative of the solar neighborhood, and Z = 0.001, which is appropriate for the study of old stellar systems, like globular clusters. During the white dwarf cooling stage, we self-consistently compute the phase in which nuclear reactions are still important, the diffusive evolution of the elements in the outer layers and, finally, we also take into account all the relevant energy sources in the deep interior of the white dwarf, such as the release of latent heat and the release of gravitational energy due to carbon-oxygen phase separation upon crystallization. We also provide colors and magnitudes for these sequences, based on a new set of improved non-gray white dwarf model atmospheres, which include the most up-to-date physical inputs like the Lyα quasi-molecular opacity. The calculations are extended down to an effective temperature of 2500 K. Motivated by the recent detection of single and binary He-core white dwarfs in metal-rich clusters, we present a full set of evolutionary calculations and colors appropriate for the study of such white dwarfs. The paper is also aimed at investigating whether stable hydrogen burning may constitute a main source of energy for massive He-core white dwarfs resulting from high-metallicity progenitors. White dwarf sequences are derived by taking into account the evolutionary history of progenitor stars with supersolar metallicities. We also incorporate a self-consistent, time-dependent treatment of gravitational settling and chemical diffusion, as well as of the residual nuclear burning. We find that the influence of residual nuclear burning during the late stages of white dwarf evolution is strongly dependent on the occurrence of chemical diffusion at the base of the hydrogen-rich envelope. When no diffusion is considered, residual hydrogen burning strongly influences the advanced stages of white dwarf cooling, introducing evolutionary delays of several Gyr. By contrast, when diffusion is taken into account the role of residual nuclear burning is strongly mitigated, and the evolution is dictated only by the thermal content stored in the ions. In addition, for all of our sequences, we provide accurate color and magnitudes on the basis of new and improved non gray model atmospheres which explicitly include Ly$\alpha$ quasi-molecular opacity., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, 1 table. We present full evolutionary calculations appropriate for the study of hot hydrogen-deficient DO white dwarfs, PG 1159 stars, and DB white dwarfs. White dwarf sequences are computed for a wide range of stellar masses and helium envelopes on the basis of a complete treatment of the evolutionary history of progenitors stars, including the core hydrogen and helium burning phases, the thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch phase, and the born-again episode that is responsible for the hydrogen deficiency. We also provide colors and magnitudes for the new sequences for Teff < 40,000 K, where the NLTE effects are not dominant. These new calculations provide a homogeneous set of evolutionary tracks appropriate for mass and age determinations for both PG 1159 stars and DO white dwarfs. The calculations are extended down to an effective temperature of 7000 K. We applied these new tracks to redetermine stellar masses and ages of all known DO white dwarfs with spectroscopically determined effective temperatures and gravities, and compare them with previous results. We also compare for the first time consistent mass determinations for both DO and PG 1159 stars, and find a considerably higher mean mass for the DO white dwarfs. We discuss as well the chemical profile expected in the envelope of variable DB white dwarfs from the consideration of the evolutionary history of progenitor stars. We present a pulsational stability analysis of hot post-AGB H-deficient pre-white dwarf stars with active He-burning shells. The stellar models employed are state-of-the-art equilibrium structures representative of PG1159 stars derived from the complete evolution of the progenitor stars. On the basis of fully nonadiabatic pulsation computations, we confirmed theoretical evidence for the existence of a separate PG1159 instability strip in the $\log T_{\rm eff} - \log g$ diagram characterized by short-period $g$-modes excited by the $\epsilon$-mechanism. This instability strip partially overlaps the already known GW Vir instability strip of intermediate/long period $g$-modes destabilized by the classical $\kappa$-mechanism acting on the partial ionization of C and/or O in the envelope of PG1159 stars. We found that PG1159 stars characterized by thick He-rich envelopes and located inside this overlapping region could exhibit both short and intermediate/long periods simultaneously. we study the particular case of VV 47, a pulsating planetary nebula nucleus that has been reported to exhibit a series of unusually short pulsation periods. We found that the long periods exhibited by VV 47 can be readily explained by the classical $\kappa$-mechanism, while the observed short-period branch below $\approx 300$ s could correspond to modes triggered by the He-burning shell through the $\epsilon$-mechanism, although more observational work is needed to confirm the reality of these short-period modes. Were the existence of short-period $g$-modes in this star convincingly confirmed by future observations, VV 47 could be the first known pulsating star in which both the $\kappa$-mechanism and the $\epsilon$-mechanism of mode driving are simultaneously operating., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. We present the first full evolutionary calculations aimed at exploring the origin of hot DQ white dwarfs. These calculations consistently cover the whole evolution from the born-again stage to the white dwarf cooling track. Our calculations provide strong support for the diffusive/convective mixing picture for the formation of hot DQs. We find that the hot DQ stage is a short-lived stage and that the range of effective temperatures where hot DQ stars are found can be accounted for by different masses of residual helium and/or different initial stellar masses. In the frame of this scenario, a correlation between the effective temperature and the surface carbon abundance in DQs should be expected, with the largest carbon abundances expected in the hottest DQs. From our calculations, we suggest that most of the hot DQs could be the cooler descendants of some PG 1159 stars characterized by He-rich envelopes markedly smaller than those predicted by the standard theory of stellar evolution. At least for one hot DQ, the high-gravity white dwarf SDSS J142625.70+575218.4, an evolutionary link between this star and the massive PG 1159 star H1504+65, is plausible., Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas

Context. White dwarfs are nowadays routinely used as reliable cosmochronometers, allowing several stellar populations to be dated. Aims. We present new white dwarf evolutionary sequences for low-metallicity progenitors. This is motivated by the recent finding that residual H burning in low-mass white dwarfs resulting from Z = 0.0001 progenitors is the main energy source over a significant part of their evolution. Methods. White dwarf sequences have been derived from full evolutionary calculations that take the entire history of progenitor stars into account, including the thermally pulsing and the post-asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phases. Results. We show that for progenitor metallicities in the range 0.00003 ≲ Z ≲ 0.001, and in the absence of carbon enrichment from the occurrence of a third dredge-up episode, the resulting H envelope of the low-mass white dwarfs is thick enough to make stable H burning the most important energy source even at low luminosities. This has a significant impact on white dwarf cooling times. This result is independent of the adopted mass-loss rate during the thermally-pulsing and post-AGB phases and in the planetary nebulae stage. Conclusions. We conclude that in the absence of third dredge-up episodes, a significant part of the evolution of low-mass white dwarfs resulting from low-metallicity progenitors is dominated by stable H burning. Aims. By means of numerical simulations and different recipes, we test the efficiency of thermohaline mixing as a process to alter the surface abundances in low-mass giant stars. Methods. We compute full evolutionary sequences of red giant branch stars close to the luminosity bump by including state-of-the-art composition transport prescriptions for the thermohaline mixing regimes. In particular, we adopt a self-consistent double-diffusive convection theory that allows handling both instabilities that arise when thermal and composition gradients compete against each other and a very recent empirically motivated and parameter-free asymptotic scaling law for thermohaline composition transport. Results. In agreement with previous works, we find that, during the red giant stage, a thermohaline instability sets in shortly after the hydrogen burning shell (HBS) encounters the chemical discontinuity left behind by the first dredge-up. We also find that the thermohaline unstable region, which initially appears on the exterior wing of the HBS, is unable to reach the outer convective envelope, with the consequence that no mixing of elements occurs that produces a noncanonical modification of the stellar surface abundances. Also in agreement with previous works, we find that artificially increasing the mixing efficiency of thermohaline regions makes it possible to connect both unstable regions, thus affecting the photospheric composition. However, we find that to reproduce the observed abundances of red giant branch stars close to the luminosity bump, thermohaline mixing efficiency has to be artificially increased by about four orders of magnitude from what is predicted by recent 3D numerical simulations of thermohaline convection close to astrophysical environments. We argue that NSV11749, an eruption observed in the early twentieth century, was a rare event known as "very late thermal pulse" (VLTP). To support our argument we compare the light curve of NSV11749 with those of the two bona fide VLTP objects known to date, V4334Sgr and V605Aql, and with those predicted by state-of-the-art stellar evolution models. Next, we explore the INT Photometric H-Alpha Survey (IPHAS) and Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) catalogs for possible counterparts of the eruption. Our analysis shows that the VLTP scenario outperforms all other proposed scenarios as an explanation of NSV11749. We identify an IPHAS/2MASS source at the eruption location of NSV11749. The derived colors suggest that the object is not enshrouded in a thick dust shell as V605Aql and V4334Sgr. Also, the absence of an apparent planetary nebula at the eruption location suggests differences with known VLTP objects which might be linked to the intensity of the eruption and the mass of the object. Further exploration of this source and scenario seems desirable. If NSV11749 was a born-again star, it would be the third event of its kind to have been observed and will strongly help us to increase our understanding of the later stages of stellar evolution and violent reactive convective burning., Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas
