Three irrigation treatments were set up in northeast China to investigate soil water movement and root water uptake of greenhouse tomatoes, and the collected experimental data were simulated by HYDRUS-2D. The computation and partitioning of evapotranspiration data into soil evaporation and crop transpiration was carried out with the double-crop coefficient method. The HYDRUS-2D model successfully simulated the soil water movement, producing RMSE ranging from 0.014 to 0.027, an MRE ranging from 0.062 to 0.126, and R2 ranging from 79% to 92%, when comparing model simulations with two-year field measurements. Under different water treatments, 83–90% of the total root quantity was concentrated in 0–20 cm soil layer, and the more the water deficit, the more water the deeper roots will absorb to compensate for the lack of water at the surface. The average area of soil water shortage in W1 was 2.08 times that in W2. W3 treatment hardly suffered from water stress. In the model, parameter n had the highest sensitivity compared with parameters α and Ks, and sensitivity ranking was n > Ks > α. This research revealed the relationships between soil, crop and water under drip irrigation of greenhouse tomatoes, and parameter sensitivity analysis could guide the key parameter adjustment and improve the simulation efficiency of the model.

For decades, theory has upheld that plants do not fractionate water isotopes as they move across the soil-root interface or along plant stems. This theory is now being challenged by several recent studies reporting that the water held in woody stems has an isotopic composition that cannot be attributed to any potential water source. Isotopic offsets between stem and source water still need to be explained, as they prevent identifying unambiguously tree water’s origin from water isotope measurements. Here we show that isotopic offsets between stem and source water can be explained by micrometer-scale water isotope heterogeneity within woody stems and soil micropores. Using a novel technique to extract sap water in xylem conduits separately from the water held in other xylem tissues, we show that these non-conductive xylem tissues are more depleted in deuterium than sap water. We also report that, in cut stems and well-watered potted plants, the isotopic composition of sap water reflects well that of irrigation water, demonstrating that no isotopic fractionation occurs during root water uptake or the sap water extraction process. Previous studies showed that isotopic heterogeneity also exists in soils at the pore scale where water adsorbed onto soil particles is more depleted than capillary/mobile soil water. Data collected at a beech (Fagus sylvatica) forest indicate that sap water matches best the capillary/mobile soil water from deep soil horizons, indicating that micrometer-scale water isotope heterogeneity in soils and stems must be accounted for to unambiguously identify where trees obtain their water within catchments.Significance StatementForests are prime regulators of the water cycle over land. They return, via transpiration, a large fraction of precipitation back to the atmosphere, influence surface runoff, groundwater recharge or stream flow, and enhance the recycling of atmospheric moisture inland from the ocean. The isotopic composition of water in woody stems can provide unique information on the role forests play in the water cycle only if it can be unambiguously related to the isotopic composition of source water. Here, we report a previously overlooked isotopic fractionation of stem water whereby non-conductive tissues are more depleted in deuterium than sap water, and propose a new technique to extract sap water separately from bulk stem water to unambiguously identify plant water sources.

Water scarcity is increasing in the world, which is limiting crop production, especially in water-limited areas such as Southern High Plains of the United States. There is a need to adopt the irrigation management practices that can help to conserve water and sustain crop production in such water-limited areas. A 2-year field study was conducted during the summers of 2019 and 2020 to evaluate the effect of deficit irrigation levels and cultivars on root distribution pattern, soil water depletion, and water use efficiency (WUE) of cucumber (Cucumis sativus). The experiment was conducted in a split-plot design with four irrigation levels [100%, 80%, 60%, and 40% crop evapotranspiration (ETc)] as main plot factor and two cultivars (Poinsett 76 and Marketmore 76) as subplot factor with three replications. Results showed that root length density (RLD) was unaffected by the irrigation levels in 2019. In 2020, the RLD was comparable between 100% and 80% ETc, and it was significantly higher in 100% ETc than both 60% Eand 40% ETc. Root surface area density (RSAD) was not significantly different between 100% and 80% ETc, and it was significantly lower in both 60% and 40% ETc than 100% ETc in both years. Soil water depletion was the highest in 40% ETc followed by 60% and 80% ETc, and it was least in 100% ETc in both years. Evapotranspiration (ET) was the highest in 100% ETc followed by 80%, 60%, and 40% ETc. The WUE was not statistically different among the irrigation treatments. However, numerically, WUE was observed in the following order: 80% ETc > 100% ETc > 60% ETc > 40% ETc. The RLD, RSAD, soil water depletion, and ET were not significantly different between ‘Poinsett 76’ and ‘Marketmore 76’. However, fruit yield was significantly higher in ‘Poinsett 76’ than ‘Marketmore 76’, which resulted in higher WUE in Poinsett 76. It can be concluded that 80% ETc and Poinsett 76 cultivar can be adopted for higher crop water productivity and successful cucumber production in SHP.

Root water uptake is a key ecohydrological process for which a physically-based understanding has been developed in the past decades. However, due to methodological constraints, knowledge gaps remain about the plastic response of whole plant root systems to a rapidly changing environment. - We designed a laboratory system for non-destructive monitoring of stable isotopic composition in plant transpiration of an herbaceous species (Centaurea jacea) and of soil water across depths, taking advantage of newly developed in-situ methods. Daily root water uptake profiles were obtained using a statistical Bayesian multi-source mixing model. - Fast shifts in the isotopic composition of both soil and transpiration water could be observed with the setup and translated into dynamic and pronounced shifts of the root water uptake profile, even in well-watered conditions. - The incorporation of plant physiological and soil physical information into statistical modelling improved the model output. A simple exercise of water balance closure underlined the non-unique relationship between root water uptake profile on the one hand, and water content and root distribution profiles on the other, illustrating the continuous adaption of the plant water uptake as a function of its root hydraulic architecture and soil water availability during the experiment

This paper presents test results of comprehensive laboratory and field-testing program efforts for the development of bioengineering solutions such as growing vegetation for protection of slopes from erosion and landslides in a tropical environmental setting. Saturated shear strength of soil was determined using direct shear tests and unsaturated soil properties, such as soil water retention curve (SWRC), were obtained using a computer-controlled hydraulic property analyzer (HYROP) system as well as a WP4C instrument. Climate data were obtained via field instrumentation and appropriate vegetation data were assumed to perform a finite element method-based transient seepage analysis and coupled slope stability analysis to test the potential of tropical hillslope to fail with and without vegetation over a period of one month. Results show that the factor of safety (FOS) for test slope considering case (a) the rainfall and bare ground, case (b) no rainfall with vegetation, and case (c) rainfall with vegetation were found to be 1.630, 1.763, and 1.650, respectively. Although FOS is marginally improved during storm events due to consideration of vegetation as compared to bare slope, this improvement in FOS is much pronounced during antecedent rainfall (i.e., long duration and small intensity) up to the first 26 days of analysis before the storm event (i.e., high intensity and short duration rainfall), which occurs on 27th day and can be instrumental in preventing slope failures. Similarly, the negative pore water pressure (i.e., matric suction) in the top layer is reduced for case (a) from −260 kPa to −40 kPa, increased for case (b) from −260 kPa to −320 kPa, and decreased for case (c) from −260 kPa to −60 kPa. The practical application of these findings is more applicable to the engineered slopes with vegetation during the dry season when the slope is more stable due to high FOS which, however, will need careful watering just to keep them healthy but prevent complete loss of developed matric suction resulting from root water uptake (RWU). In addition, the small improvement in FOS due to matric suction induced from RWU could play a key role in keeping the slope just stable during extreme storm events especially, when FOS of the bare slope is close to 1. To the best knowledge of the authors this is the first documented geotechnical study, using the tropical soil of Guam, which considers the hydro-mechanical effect of RWU-induced matric suction in slope stability analysis in a tropical setting.

Root water uptake is a major process controlling water balance and accounts for about 60% of global terrestrial evapotranspiration. The root system employs different strategies to better exploit available soil water, however, the regulation of water uptake under the spatiotemporal heterogeneous and uneven distribution of soil water is still a major question. To tackle this question, we need to understand how plants cope with this heterogeneity by adjustment of above ground responses to partial rhizosphere drying. Therefore, we use R-SWMS simulating soil water flow, flow towards the roots, and radial and the axial flow inside the root system to perform numerical experiments on a 9-cell gridded rhizotrone (50 cm×50 cm). The water potentials in each cell can be varied and fixed for the period of simulation and no water flow is allowed between cells while roots can pass over the boundaries. Then a static mature maize root architecture to different extents invaded in all cells is subjected to the various arrangements of cells' soil water potentials. R-SWMS allows determining possible hydraulic lift in drier areas. With these simulations, the variation of root water and leaf water potential will be determined and the role of root length density in each cell and corresponding average soil-root water potential will be statistically discussed.

Plants are major drivers of soil structure dynamics. Root growth creates new macropores and provides essential carbon to soil, while root water uptake may induce crack formation around roots. Cracks can facilitate root growth as they provide pathways of least resistance and improve water infiltration and soil aeration. Due to the lack of suitable quantification methods, knowledge on the effects of root water uptake on soil crack formation remains limited. In the current study, we developed a time-lapse imaging platform that allows i) simulating root water uptake through localized soil drying and ii) quantifying the development of two-dimensional crack networks. Customized soil boxes that were 50 mm wide, 55 mm high and 5 mm deep were designed. Artificial roots made of dialysis tubes were inserted into the soil boxes and polyethylene glycol solution was circulated through the tubes. This induced a gradient in osmotic potential at the contact area (150 mm2) between the soil and the dialysis tubes, resulting in controlled soil drying. Drying intensity was varied by using different polyethylene glycol concentrations. Experiments were conducted with three soils that were subjected to three drying intensities for 6.5 days. We developed a time-lapse imaging system to record soil crack formation at two-minute intervals in twelve samples simultaneously. Resulting crack networks were quantified with an automated image analysis pipeline. Across soils and drying intensities, crack network development slowed down after 24–48 h of soil drying. The extent and complexity of crack networks increased with drying intensity and crack networks were larger and more complex in the clay and clay loam soil than in the silt loam soil. Smaller and less complex crack networks were better connected than larger and more complex networks. These results demonstrate that the platform developed in this study is suitable to quantify crack network development in soil due to simulated root water uptake at high temporal resolution and high throughput. Root water uptake plays an important role in water transport and carbon cycle among Groundwater&ndash, Soil&ndash, Plant&ndash, Atmosphere&ndash, Continuum. The acclimation of crops under elevated carbon dioxide concentrations (eCO2) depends greatly on their capability to exploit soil water resources. Quantifying root water uptake and its relationship with crop growth under eCO2 remains challenging. This study observed maize growth subjected to current CO2 (400 ppm) and eCO2 (700 ppm) treatments via a device combined with a climate chamber and weighing lysimeters. Root water uptake patterns were determined based on the isotopic tracing technique. The main water uptake depth shifted from 0&minus, 20 cm under current treatment to 20&minus, 40 cm under eCO2 at the seedling growth stage. Maize took up 22.7% and 15.4% more soil water from a main uptake depth of 40&minus, 80 cm at jointing and tasseling stages in response to eCO2, respectively. More soil water (8.0%) was absorbed from the 80&minus, 140 cm layer at the filling stage under eCO2. Soil water contributions at the main uptake depth during seedling stage were negatively associated with leaf transpiration rate (Tr), net photosynthetic rate (Pn), and leaf area index (LAI) under both treatments, whereas significant positive correlations in the 40&minus, 80 cm layer under current treatment shifted to the 80&minus, 140 cm layer by eCO2. Deep soil water benefited to improve Tr, Pn and LAI under both treatments. No significant correlation between soil water contributions in each layer and leaf water use efficiency was induced by eCO2. This study enhanced our knowledge of crop water use acclimation to future eCO2 and provides insights into agricultural water management.

A growing number of field studies report isotopic offsets between stem water and its potential sources that prevent the unambiguous identification of plant water origin using water isotopes. We explored the causes of this isotopic offset by conducting a controlled experiment on the temperate tree species Fagus sylvatica. We measured d2H and d18O of soil and stem water from potted saplings growing on three soil substrates and subjected to two watering regimes. Regardless of substrate, soil and stem water d2H were similar only near permanent wilting point. Under moister conditions, stem water d2H was 11 ± 3 more negative than soil water d2H, coherent with field studies. Under drier conditions, stem water d2H became progressively more enriched than soil water d2H. Although stem water d18O broadly reflected that of soil water, soil stem d2H and d18O differences were correlated (r = 0.76) and increased with transpiration rates indicated by proxies. Soil stem isotopic offsets are more likely to be caused by water isotope heterogeneities within the soil pore and stem tissues, which would be masked under drier conditions as a result of evaporative enrichment, than by fractionation under root water uptake. In Tunisia, water used for irrigation is often saline, increasing the risk of salinization for soils and crops. In this study, an experiment was conducted on a tomato crop cultivated on a silty-clay soil irrigated with three different water qualities: 0, 3.5, and 7 dS.m&minus, 1. Experimental data were then used to calibrate and validate the Hydrus-1D model, which simulates water flow and salt transfer in soils. The successfully-calibrated and validated model was then used to study the combined effects of the soil osmotic and soil matrix potentials on root water uptake. The values of the root mean square error (RMSE), the coefficient of determination (CD), the modeling efficiency (EF), and the coefficient of residual mass (CRM) were close to their optimal values for both soil water content and soil electrical conductivity profiles, indicating the reliability of the model to reproduce water and salt dynamics. Relative yields (Yr), indirectly estimated using actual and potential root water uptake (transpiration), indicated that the multiplicative stress response model (using the S-shape model) satisfactorily simulates measured yields and reproduces the effects of irrigation with saline waters on crop yields. An alternative scenario using a reduction of water requirements by 50% was investigated to assess an irrigation method with considerable water savings. As the results show that relative yields, Yr, were only slightly reduced, the crop water requirements estimated by CROPWAT 8.0 must have been overestimated. The variation of the soil salinity in the root zone highlighted a high salinization risk in the short-term when water of 7 dS.m&minus, 1 is used for irrigation.

The current trend towards linking stomata regulation to plant hydraulics emphasizes the role of xylem vulnerability. Using a soil–plant hydraulic model, we show that xylem vulnerability does not trigger stomatal closure in medium-wet to dry soils and we propose that soil hydraulic conductivity loss is the primary driver of stomatal closure. This finding has two key implications: transpiration response to drought cannot be derived from plant traits only and is related to soil–root hydraulics in a predictable way; roots and their interface with the soil, the rhizosphere, are key hydraulic regions that plants can alter to efficiently adapt to water limitations. Isotopic labeling techniques have the potential to minimize the uncertainty of plant root water uptake (RWU) profiles estimated through multi-source (statistical) modeling, by artificially enhancing soil water isotopic gradient. Furthermore, physical models can account for hydrodynamic constraints to RWU if simultaneous soil and plant water status data is available. In this study, a population of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacae cv Soni) was grown in a macro-rhizotron setup under semi-controlled conditions to monitor such variables for a 34-hours long period following the oxygen stable isotopic (18O) labeling of deep soil water. Aboveground variables included tiller and leaf water oxygen isotopic compositions as well as leaf water potential (ψleaf), relative humidity, and transpiration rate. Belowground profiles of root length density (RLD), soil water content and isotopic composition were also sampled. While there were strong correlations between hydraulic variables as well as between isotopic variables, the experimental results underlined the discrepancy between variations of hydraulic and isotopic variables. In order to dissect the problem, we reproduced both types of observations with a one-dimensional physical model of water flow in the soil-plant domain, for 60 different realistic RLD profiles. While simulated ψleaf followed clear temporal variations with little differences across plants as if they were “on board of the same rollercoaster”, simulated δtiller values within the plant population were rather heterogeneous (“swarm-like”) with relatively little temporal variation and a strong sensitivity to rooting depth. The physical model thus suggested that the discrepancy between isotopic and hydraulic observations was logical, as the variability captured by the former was spatial and may not correlate with the temporal dynamics of the latter. For comparison purposes a Bayesian statistical model was also used to simulate RWU. While they predicted relatively similar cumulative RWU profiles, the physical model could differentiate spatial from temporal dynamics of the isotopic signature, and supported that the local increase of soil water content and formation of a peak of labelled water observed overnight were due to hydraulic lift.

The geometry of rooting systems is important for modeling water flows in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. Measured information about root density can be summarized in adjustable equations applied in hydrological models. We present such descriptive functions used to model root density distribution over depth and evaluate their quality of fit to measured crop root density profiles retrieved from the literature. An equation is presented to calculate the mean root half-distance as a function of depth from root length density profiles as used in single root models for water uptake. To assess the importance of the shape of the root length density profile in hydrological modeling, the sensitivity of actual transpiration predictions of a hydrological model to the shape of root length density profiles is analyzed using 38 years of meteorological data from Southeast Brazil. The cumulative root density distributions covering the most important agricultural crops (in terms of area) were found to be well described by the logistic function or the Gompertz function. Root length density distribution has a consistent effect on relative transpiration, hence on relative yield, but the common approach to predict transpiration reduction and irrigation requirement from soil water storage or average water content is shown to be only partially supported by simulation results.

Seedling size is a very important issue when producing plants for restoration projects. Scientific evidence on the appropriate size for drylands is contradictory. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of seedling size during first establishment by conducting a short term greenhouse experiment with Pinus canariensis containerized seedlings. A selection of large (mean height: 33.7 cm) and small (14.3 cm) one-year-old seedlings were planted in pots under two volumetric water content regimes: dry (7%) and wet (15%). Midday shoot water potential was measured in two periods: 10 (prior to root protrusion) and 30 (once the roots had protruded from the plug) days after planting. The length of protruding roots was measured after 30 days. One month after planting, the large seedlings under the dry regime produced more new roots than the small seedlings, but also showed the highest midday water potential values. Therefore, the greater root growth of the former did not offset the higher transpiration demand when planted in dry soils. These results suggest that under uncertainty about the soil humidity levels of dry areas, using small seedlings can improve their short-term survival after planting. Artificial capillary barriers (CBs) are used to improve root zone conditions as they can keep water and nutrients in the root zone by limiting downward percolation. Numerical analysis is one of the promising tools for evaluating CB systems’ performance during the cultivation of leafy vegetables. This study aims to investigate the effects of the CB system on soil water dynamics during spinach cultivation in a soil column under different irrigation scenarios using HYDRUS (2D/3D) by comparing uniform (UNI), line-source (LSI), and plant-targeted (PTI) irrigations combined with alternative irrigation schedules. Simulation results of volumetric soil water contents were generally corresponding to measured data. Simulation results with various hypothetical irrigation scenarios exhibited that the CB was an effective system to diminish percolation losses and improve the root zone’s soil water storage capacity. On the other hand, evaporation loss can be increased as more water is maintained near the surface. While this loss can be significantly minimized by reducing the water application area, the irrigation amount must be carefully defined because applying water in a smaller area may accelerate downward water movement so that the water content at the CB interface can reach close to saturation. In addition to the malfunction of the CB layer, it may also cause a reduction of plant root water uptake (RWU) because the root zone is too wet. Among evaluated irrigation scenarios, irrigating every two days with PTI was the best scenario for the spinach as water use efficiency was greatly improved.

Water scarcity and quality degradation represent real threats to economic, social, and environmental development of arid and semi-arid regions. Drip irrigation associated to Deficit Irrigation (DI) has been investigated as a water saving technique. Yet its environmental impacts on soil and groundwater need to be gone into in depth especially when using brackish irrigation water. Soil water content and salinity were monitored in a fully drip irrigated potato plot with brackish water (4.45 dSm&minus, 1) in semi-arid Tunisia. The HYDRUS-1D model was used to investigate the effects of different irrigation regimes (deficit irrigation (T1R, 70% ETc), full irrigation (T2R, 100% ETc), and farmer&rsquo, s schedule (T3R, 237% ETc) on root water uptake, root zone salinity, and solute return flows to groundwater. The simulated values of soil water content (&theta, ) and electrical conductivity of soil solution (ECsw) were in good agreement with the observation values, as indicated by mean RMSE values (&le, 0.008 m3&middot, m&minus, 3, and &le, 0.28 dSm&minus, 1 for soil water content and ECsw respectively). The results of the different simulation treatments showed that relative yield accounted for 54%, 70%, and 85.5% of the potential maximal value when both water and solute stress were considered for deficit, full. and farmer&rsquo, s irrigation, respectively. Root zone salinity was the lowest and root water uptake was the same with and without solute stress for the treatment corresponding to the farmer&rsquo, s irrigation schedule (273% ETc). Solute return flows reaching the groundwater were the highest for T3R after two subsequent rainfall seasons. Beyond the water efficiency of DI with brackish water, long term studies need to focus on its impact on soil and groundwater salinization risks under changing climate conditions.

In agricultural practices the huge demand on fresh water for irrigation, together with water scarcity, encourages the reuse of wastewater as a water resource. Integrated management of water resources by considering the efficient use of wastewater could result in fresh water saving. A field experiment was conducted to compare the effects of two irrigation water sources, brackish secondary treated wastewater and surface canal fresh water, on maize crop. During the irrigation cycle, soil water content distribution was estimated by means of time-lapse mode electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), soil electrical resistivity being highly sensitive to soil moisture and water salinity. The effects of the two water sources on the spatial-temporal distribution of ERT-derived soil moisture values were assessed, and different roots’ behaviors observed. Results show a decreased root water uptake with brackish irrigation water with respect to fresh water. This result implies an increase in water savings due to reduced crop water requirement, which has significant implications for economic and environmental management.

Measurement and visualization of water flow in soil and roots is essential for understanding of how roots take up water from soils. Such information would allow for the optimization of irrigation practices and for the identification of the optimal traits for the capture of water, in particular when water is scarce. However, measuring water flow in roots growing in soil is challenging. The previous 2D experiments (Zarebanadkouki et al., 2012) have not been sufficient for understanding the water transport across the root and therefore we employed an on-the-fly tomography technique with temporal resolution of three minutes. In this paper, we show that the series of on-the-fly neutron tomographic experiments performed on the same sample allow for monitoring the three-dimensional spatial distribution of D2O across the root tissue. The obtained data will allow us to calculate the convective and diffusive transport properties across root tissue and to estimate the relative importance of different pathways of water across the root tissue. peerReviewed

Improving salinity leaching efficiency not only conserves water but also reduces groundwater contamination. Current leaching requirement (LR) calculations are based on steady-state and one-dimensional (1D) approaches, and consequently, this LR concept may not be applicable to drip irrigation (approximately 2D), which is becoming more common due to its higher water use efficiency. The aims of this study were to assess the salinity leaching fraction (LF) in clay, loam, and sand soils under 1D (to mimic sprinkler irrigation) and 2D (to mimic drip irrigation) transient conditions with a numerical model (HYDRUS). Water applications used the actual irrigation scheme in an almond orchard located in central California without considering precipitation. Model simulations showed that soil salinity at the lower boundary (depth of 150 cm) reached steady-state in 10 years in HYDRUS-1D simulations. The leaching fractions calculated from the ratio of drainage-water depth to irrigation-water depth (LFw = Ddw/Diw) and irrigation-water salinity to drainage-water salinity (LFEC = ECiw/ECdw) from HYDRUS-1D were similar among different textured soils. However, they were much higher under drip irrigation (2D) than under sprinkler irrigation (1D) when the same amount of water was applied, and LFEC values were much greater than the LFw values under 2D simulations. Salt balance (SB) and leaching efficiency (LE) indicated that sprinkler irrigation (1D) is more effective for salinity leaching than drip irrigation (2D). To improve salinity leaching efficiency, further evaluation of LRs under drip irrigation is needed.

Over the last decade, investigations on root water uptake have evolved toward a deeper integration of the soil and roots compartment properties, with the goal of improving our understanding of water acquisition from drying soils. This evolution parallels the increasing attention of agronomists to suboptimal crop production environments. Recent results have led to the description of root system architectures that might contribute to deep-water extraction or to water-saving strategies. In addition, the manipulation of root hydraulic properties would provide further opportunities to improve water uptake. However, modeling studies highlight the role of soil hydraulics in the control of water uptake in drying soil and call for integrative soil-plant system approaches.

[Aims] A soil-plant-atmosphere continuum (SPAC) model for simulating tree transpiration (Ep) with variable water stress and water distribution in the soil is presented. The model couples a sun/shade approach for the canopy with a discrete representation of the soil in different layers and compartments., [Methods] To test its performance, the outputs from the simulations are compared to those from an experiment using trees of olive ‘Picual’ and almond ‘Marinada’ with the root system split into two. Trees are subjected to different irrigation phases in which one side of the root system is dried out while the other is kept wet., [Results] The model is able to accurately predict Ep (R2 and the efficiency factor (EF) around 0.9) in the two species studied. The use of a function that modulates the uptake capacity of a root according to the soil water content was necessary to track the fluxes observed from each split part. This study tested a method to quantify and locate hydraulic lift (HL, defined as the passive upward water flow from wetter to dryer soil zones through the plant root system) by combining an experiment using the stable water isotope 1H218O as a tracer with a soil–plant water flow model. Our methodology consisted in (i) establishing the initial conditions for HL in a large rhizobox planted with Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), (ii) labeling water in the deepest soil layer with an 18O-enriched solution, (iii) monitoring the water O isotopic composition in soil layers to find out changes in the upper layers that would reflect redistribution of 18O-enriched water from the bottom layers by the roots, and (iv) comparing the observed soil water O isotopic composition to simulation results of a three-dimensional model of water flow and isotope transport in the soil–root system. Our main findings were that (i) the depth and strength of the observed changes in soil water O isotopic composition could be well reproduced with a modeling approach (RMSE = 0.2‰, i.e., equivalent to the precision of the isotopic measurements), (ii) the corresponding water volume involved in HL was estimated to account for 19% of the plant transpiration of the following day, i.e., 0.45 mm of water, and was in agreement with the observed soil water content changes, and (iii) the magnitude of the simulated HL was sensitive to both plant and soil hydraulic properties.

Weighable lysimeters are powerful measurement systems for identifying soil hydraulic processes and properties, because the boundary fluxes (precipitation, actual evapotranspiration, and seepage across the bottom) can be determined very precisely. However, root water uptake by plants and the soil water flux are interrelated. Thus, the simultaneous estimation of root water uptake parameters and soil hydraulic parameters from macroscopic state observations is a challenge. In this study we investigated the possibility of simultaneously estimating root water uptake and soil hydraulic parameters by inverse simulation of soil water flow in monolithic lysimeters under atmospheric boundary conditions. We used the Richards equation and a macroscopic root water uptake model to simulate the processes. The amount of information needed for the unique identification of parameters was analyzed and the magnitude of their uncertainties was investigated. To check the principal feasibility of our approach, we first examined synthetic data sets for different scenarios and instrumentation campaigns that differed in their information content and complexity of soil properties. The investigations of synthetic data showed that for homogeneous profiles, cumulative outflow and profile-averaged water content data contained enough system information to allow the simultaneous estimation of soil hydraulic properties and root-distribution parameters. In contrast, for soil profiles consisting of two layers, unique soil hydraulic parameters and the correct rooting depth could only be estimated if matric potential measurements from both layers were included in the objective function. To test the procedure with real data, soil hydraulic properties of the grass-reference lysimeter at Wagna (Austria) were estimated using actual measurements. Water dynamics in the lysimeter could be described well by an effective parameterization assuming a homogeneous soil profile. Furthermore, the system behavior under different boundary conditions could be predicted adequately with the estimated parameters.

Different spatial distributions of soil moisture were imposed on field-grown grapevines by applying the same irrigation volumes to the entire (DI; deficit irrigation) or part of the (PRD; partial root zone drying) root zone. Five treatments were applied: controls irrigated at 60% ETc (crop evapotranspiration) for the whole season (308 mm year(-1)); DI-1 and PRD-1 that received the same irrigation as controls before fruit set, 30% ETc from fruit set to harvest and 45% ETc post-harvest (192 mm year(-1)); and DI-2 and PRD-2 that were the same, except that 15% ETc was applied from fruit set to harvest (142 mm year(-1)). Compared with DI-1, PRD-1 maintained higher leaf area post-veraison and increased root water uptake, whole-plant hydraulic conductance, leaf transpiration, stomatal conductance, and photosynthesis, but decreased intrinsic gas exchange efficiency without causing differences in leaf xylem abscisic acid (ABA) concentration. Compared with DI-2, PRD-2 increased leaf xylem ABA concentration and decreased root water uptake, whole-plant hydraulic conductance, leaf transpiration, stomatal conductance, and photosynthesis, mainly at the beginning of PRD cycles. Distinctive PRD effects (e.g. greater stomatal closure) depended on the volumetric soil water content of the wet root zone, as predicted from a model of root-to-shoot ABA signalling.

Irrigation and fertilization both affect the water cycle in agricultural ecosystems. It is difficult to quantify root water uptake (RWU) which varies with crop development and seasons. In this study, a Bayesian mixing model (MixSIAR) coupling with dual stable isotopes (D and 18O) was used to quantify RWU patterns for winter wheat under different irrigation and fertilization treatments between 2014 and 2015 in Beijing, China. The main RWU depth during the greening-jointing, jointing-heading, heading-filling, and filling-harvest stages was 0&ndash, 20 cm, 20&ndash, 70 cm, 0&ndash, 20 cm, and 20&ndash, 70 cm, respectively, which showed water uptake proportions of 67.0%, 42.0%, 38.7%, and 34.9%, respectively. Significant differences in RWU patterns appeared between the 2014 and 2015 seasons. The main RWU depth increased gradually from 0&ndash, 20 cm at the greening-jointing stage to 20&ndash, 70 cm at the jointing-heading stage and 70&ndash, 150 cm during the heading to harvest period in 2014. However, winter wheat primarily took up soil water from the 0&ndash, 70 cm layer in 2015. The average water uptake proportion in the top layer (0&ndash, 20 cm) in 2015 (42.6%) was remarkably higher than that in 2014 (28.7%). There was a significantly negative relationship (p &lt, 0.01) between the water uptake proportion and the proportion of root length at the filling-harvest stage in 2014, while no significant correlation (p &gt, 0.05) was found in 2015. Variable distributions of root characteristics and soil moisture induced by different irrigation and fertilization comprehensively affected the RWU profile, particularly under severe drought environments in 2015. Treatments with fertilization of 105 kg hm&minus, 2 N or irrigation of 20 mm during the greening-jointing stage significantly promoted water uptake contribution in the 70&ndash, 150 cm (32.2%) and 150&ndash, 200 cm (23.5%) layers at the jointing-heading stage in 2015, while other treatments had a shallow dominant RWU depth (0&ndash, 20 cm). The planned wetting layer should be kept within the main RWU depth of 0&ndash, 70 cm for improving irrigation water use efficiency.

Soil water content (SWC) distribution plays an important role in root water uptake (RWU) and crop yield. Reasonable deep irrigation can increase the yield of winter wheat. The soil water movement model of winter wheat was established by considering the root water uptake and the different soil depths of irrigation and using the source term of the soil water movement equation to simulate irrigation at different soil depths. For model verification, experiments on three treatments of winter wheat growth were conducted at irrigation soil depths of 0% (T1), 40% (T2), and 70% (T3) of the distribution depth of the winter wheat root system. The SWC calculated by the model is in accordance with the dynamic change trend of the measured SWC. The maximum absolute error of the model was 0.022 cm3/cm3. The maximum average relative error was 7.95%. The maximum root mean square error was 0.28 cm3/cm3. Therefore, the model has a high simulation accuracy and can be used to simulate the distribution and dynamic changes of SWC of winter wheat in irrigation at different soil depths. The experimental data showed that irrigation soil depth has a significant effect on the root distribution of winter wheat (p &lt, 0.05), and deep irrigation can reduce the root length density (RLD) in the upper soil layers and increase the RLD in the deeper soil layers. The dynamic simulation of RWU and SWC showed that deep irrigation can increase the SWC and RWU in deep soil and decrease the SWC and RWU in upper soil. Consequently, deep irrigation can increase the transpiration of winter wheat, reduce evaporation and evapotranspiration, and increase the yield of winter wheat.

To assess how the effects of drought could be better captured in process-based models, this study simulated and contrasted two water uptake approaches in Scots pine and Scots pine-Sessile oak stands. The first approach consisted of an empirical function for root water uptake (WU1). The second approach was based on differences of soil water potential along a soil-plant-atmosphere continuum (WU2) with total root resistance varying at low, medium and high total root resistance levels. Three data sets on different time scales relevant for tree growth were used for model evaluation: Two short-term datasets on daily transpiration and soil water content as well as a long-term dataset on annual tree ring increments. Except WU2 with high total root resistance, all transpiration outputs exceeded observed values. The strongest correlation between simulated and observed annual tree ring width occurred with WU2 and high total root resistance. The findings highlighted the importance of severe drought as a main reason for small diameter increment. However, if all three data sets were taken into account, no approach was superior to the other. We conclude that accurate projections of future forest productivity depend largely on the realistic representation of root water uptake in forest model simulations.

In the Heihe River basin, China, increased salinity and water shortages present serious threats to the sustainability of arid wetlands. It is critical to understand the interactions between soil water and salts (from saline shallow groundwater and the river) and their effects on plant growth under the influence of shallow groundwater and irrigation. In this study, the Hydrus-1D model was used in an arid wetland of the Middle Heihe River to investigate the effects of the dynamics of soil water, soil salinization, and depth to water table (DWT) as well as groundwater salinity on Chinese tamarisk root water uptake. The modeled soil water and electrical conductivity of soil solution (ECsw) are in good agreement with the observations, as indicated by RMSE values (0.031 and 0.046 cm3·cm−3 for soil water content, 0.037 and 0.035 dS·m−1 for ECsw, during the model calibration and validation periods, respectively). The calibrated model was used in scenario analyses considering different DWTs, salinity levels and the introduction of preseason irrigation. The results showed that (I) Chinese tamarisk root distribution was greatly affected by soil water and salt distribution in the soil profile, with about 73.8% of the roots being distributed in the 20–60 cm layer, (II) root water uptake accounted for 91.0% of the potential maximal value when water stress was considered, and for 41.6% when both water and salt stress were considered, (III) root water uptake was very sensitive to fluctuations of the water table, and was greatly reduced when the DWT was either dropped or raised 60% of the 2012 reference depth, (IV) arid wetland vegetation exhibited a high level of groundwater dependence even though shallow groundwater resulted in increased soil salinization and (V) preseason irrigation could effectively increase root water uptake by leaching salts from the root zone. We concluded that a suitable water table and groundwater salinity coupled with proper irrigation are key factors to sustainable development of arid wetlands.

Split root experiments have the potential to disentangle water transport in roots and soil, enabling the investigation of the water uptake pattern of a root system. Interpretation of the experimental data assumes that water flow between the split soil compartments does not occur. Another approach to investigate root water uptake is by numerical simulations combining soil and root water flow depending on the parameterization and description of the root system. Our aim is to demonstrate the synergisms that emerge from combining split root experiments with simulations. We show how growing root architectures derived from temporally repeated X-ray CT scanning can be implemented in numerical soil-plant models. Faba beans were grown with and without split layers and exposed to a single drought period during which plant and soil water status were measured. Root architectures were reconstructed from CT scans and used in the model R-SWMS (root-soil water movement and solute transport) to simulate water potentials in soil and roots in 3D as well as water uptake by growing roots in different depths. CT scans revealed that root development was considerably lower with split layers compared to without. This coincided with a reduction of transpiration, stomatal conductance and shoot growth. Simulated predawn water potentials were lower in the presence of split layers. Simulations showed that this was related to an increased resistance to vertical water flow in the soil by the split layers. Comparison between measured and simulated soil water potentials proved that the split layers were not perfectly isolating and that redistribution of water from the lower, wetter compartments to the drier upper compartments took place, thus water losses were not equal to the root water uptake from those compartments. Still, the layers increased the resistance to vertical flow which resulted in lower simulated collar water potentials that led to reduced stomatal conductance and growth.

Many hydrological models including root water uptake (RWU) do not consider the dimension of root system hydraulic architecture (HA) because explicitly solving water flow in such a complex system is too time consuming. However, they might lack process understanding when basing RWU and plant water stress predictions on functions of variables such as the root length density distribution. On the basis of analytical solutions of water flow in a simple HA, we developed an "implicit" model of the root system HA for simulation of RWU distribution (sink term of Richards' equation) and plant water stress in three-dimensional soil water flow models. The new model has three macroscopic parameters defined at the soil element scale, or at the plant scale, rather than for each segment of the root system architecture: the standard sink fraction distribution SSF, the root system equivalent conductance Krs and the compensatory RWU conductance Kcomp. It clearly decouples the process of water stress from compensatory RWU, and its structure is appropriate for hydraulic lift simulation. As compared to a model explicitly solving water flow in a realistic maize root system HA, the implicit model showed to be accurate for predicting RWU distribution and plant collar water potential, with one single set of parameters, in dissimilar water dynamics scenarios. For these scenarios, the computing time of the implicit model was a factor 28 to 214 shorter than that of the explicit one. We also provide a new expression for the effective soil water potential sensed by plants in soils with a heterogeneous water potential distribution, which emerged from the implicit model equations. With the proposed implicit model of the root system HA, new concepts are brought which open avenues towards simple and mechanistic RWU models and water stress functions operational for field scale water dynamics simulation.

A good understanding of the soil water content (SWC) distribution at the field scale is essential to improve the management of water, soil and crops. Recent studies proved that electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) opens interesting perspectives in the determination of the SWC distribution in 3 dimensions (3-D). We conducted this study (1) to check and validate the sensitivity of ERT for monitoring SWC distribution in a maize field during the late growing season; and (2) to investigate how maize plants and precipitations affect the dynamics of SWC distribution. We used time domain reflectometry (TDR) measurements to validate ERT-inverted SWC values. We also calculated the evolution of water mass balance to check whether ERT was capable of giving a reliable estimate of soil water stock evolution. We observe that ERT is able to give the same average SWC as TDR (R2 = 0.98). In addition, we showed that ERT give better estimates of the water stock than TDR thanks to its higher spatial resolution. The high resolution of ERT measurements also allows the discrimination of SWC heterogeneities. The SWC distribution shows that alternation of maize rows and inter-rows is the main influencing factor of the SWC distribution. The drying patterns are linked to the root profiles, with drier zones under the maize rows. During small dry periods, the SWC decrease occurs mainly in the two upper soil horizons and in the inter-row area. At the opposite, precipitations increase the SWC mostly under the maize rows and at the upper soil layer. Nevertheless, the total amount of rainfall during the growing season is not sufficient to modify the SWC patterns induced by the maize rows. During the experimental time, the SWC redistribution hardly occurred from maize rows to the inter-rows but lateral redistribution from the inter-row to the maize rows induced by potential gradient generates SWC decrease in the inter-rows area and in the deeper soil horizons.

Root water uptake by ricinus communis (castor bean) in fine sand was investigated using MRI with multiecho sampling. Before starting the experiments the plants germinated and grew for 3 weeks in a cylindrical container with a di- ameter of 9 cm. Immediately before the MRI experiments started, the containers were water-saturated and sealed, so water content changes were only caused by root water uptake. In continuation of a preceding work, where we applied SPRITE we tested a multi-echo multi-slice sequence (MSME). In this approach, the water content was imaged by setting TE = 6.76 ms and nE = 128 with an isotropic resolution of 3.1mm. We calculated the water content maps by biexponential fitting of the multi-slice echo train data and normalisation on reference cuvettes filled with glass beads and 1 mM NiCl2 solution. The water content determination was validated by comparing to mean gravimetric water content measurements. By co- registration with the root architecture, visualised by a 3D fast spin echo sequence (RARE), we conclude that the largest water content changes occurred in the neighbourhood of the roots and in the upper layers of the soil.

International audience; Ground settlement can damage light buildings supported by shallow foundations through cracking. The prediction and modeling of tree roots effect on soil water content and consequently the soil settlements needs a comprehensive analysis of the interactions between tree roots, soil, and water. Root water uptake by trees depends on soil conditions, climatic parameters, and vegetation type. A two-dimensional root-water-uptake model is implemented in a fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanic finite element program, θ-STOCK. Evapotranspiration from the soil surface covered by grasses is calculated using energy balance and water balance on the surface of soil. The tree roots are modeled as sink terms which are distributed vertically for homogeneous canopy such as forests, or laterally in the case of single tree or a row of trees. The distribution of sink term depends of geometry of root zone and type of canopy. Two case studies are used for verification of implemented model by comparing the modeling results with the measured water content reduction in the zones influenced by tree roots. The soil settlements due to these water content reductions are also calculated.

Such an apparent hysteresis effect of water stress (HEWS) is usually neglected in simulating root-water-uptake (RWU) by empirical models. To consider HEWS in the empirical macroscopic RWU model of Feddes, a water stress recovery coefficient (δ) was introduced based on two lysimetric experiments under greenhouse and field conditions for winter wheat. The integrated effects of historical water stress events were investigated by assuming that the normalized influence weight of each past stress event declines with the increase of time interval before simulation as an exponential function of attenuation rate. Although δ could be described by an exponential function of an integrative index representing the general historical stress extent (R2 = 0.65, P < 0.001), with an attenuation rate smaller than 0.13, it is challenging to establish such a function practically. An attenuation rate close to zero means HEWS is mainly dominated by the water stress on the previous day, validated by a significant relationship between the relative transpiration or stomatal conductance on the day after irrigation and the water stress extent on the day before irrigation. Therefore, a simplification, substituting the integrative index in the exponential function with the stress extent on the previous day, was proposed for estimating δ. Compared to the traditional RWU model, the revised model considering HEWS was more successful in simulating relative transpiration and soil water dynamics.
