The fast and efficient recovery could be an important trait defining the efficacy of plant drought adaptation. In this work, we aimed to develop a set of simple and appropriate physiological proxies that could be used as reliable indicators to predict plant drought responses and validate the role of specific physiological traits such as root length, stomata density, and residual transpiration, in the drought tolerance and recovery in barley. Eighty barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) genotypes were subjected to progressive droughting until the soil moisture level reached 10%, followed by rewatering. Plants were visually scored at the end of drought period and two weeks after rewatering. SPAD values and chlorophyll fluorescence Fv/Fm ratio were also measured, alongside with stomatal density (SD) and residual transpiration (RT). The same genotypes were germinated in paper rolls treated with 15% (w/v) of polyethylene glycol (PEG) 8000 by quantification of changes in the root growth patterns. Responses to drought stress varied among the genotypes, and drought tolerance and recovery scores were significantly correlated with each other. Changes in SPAD value, Fv/Fm ratio and root length were significantly correlated with the drought tolerance and recovery indices. Both indices correlated strongly with the SD and RT of irrigated plants, although in an unexpected direction. We have also correlated the extent of plants' drought tolerance to their ability to grow in saline soils (a condition often termed a "physiological drought") and found a positive association between these two traits. The fact that drought tolerant genotype also possessed higher salinity tolerance implies some common mechanisms conferring both traits. Plants having less SD and more RT under irrigated conditions showed higher drought tolerance. Soil salinization is one of the most common land desertification processes that can be found worldwide. It is a certainly severe environment hazard and threatens the stability of ecosystems. As a rapid and inexpensive tool, remote sensing technology combining with the measurements of soil spectra has been widely concerned on identifying and mapping salt effect on lands. However, as effects of the soil moisture often immerge the effects of salt to soil reflectance spectra, soil moisture became a major factor to restrict soil salinity monitoring from soil reflectance. High soil moisture content will lead to failure on soil salinity estimation from soil reflectance data. In this paper, a semianalytical model using an exponent function was developed to estimate soil salt content (SSC) under different moisture levels based on a control laboratory experiment. And the root-mean-square error and mean relative error were 0.799 g/kg and 31.294%, respectively, when the model was applied to estimate SSCs by wet soil reflectance. To sum up, considering both effects of soil moisture and soil salt on soil reflectance, the semianalytical model reduced SSC estimated error. The approach presented in this paper provides a new way of estimating soil salinity from soil spectra under various soil moisture conditions, and it will be a potential application for large-scale SSC mapping. Background: Several coastal regions in Vietnam have been suffered from salinity intrusion as a consequence of global climate change. However, there are limited studies on saline intrusion in Vietnam. This paper aimed to investigate the salinity intrusion of water and soil samples in paddy fields along Tam Giang lagoon, Thua Thien Hue province and clarify the factors affecting the salinity level. Methods: We measured the salinity concentrations (EC, Electrical conductivity) of water and soil samples in paddy fields at different distances (400, 600, 800, 1000 and 1200 m) from Tam Giang lagoon. The multiple regression analysis was performed to figure out the factors affecting the salinity concentrations. Result: The salinity concentrations of water were assessed as 48% high saline (10-25 dS m-1), 34% moderately saline (2-10 dS m-1), 2% slightly saline (0.7-2 dS m-1) and 15% non-saline (<0.7 dS m-1). As for surface soil in paddy field, 14.3% moderately saline (4-8 dS m-1), 35.4% slightly saline (2-4 dS m-1) and 50.3% non-saline (0-2 dS m-1) were measured. A significantly positive correlation was found between salinity concentrations of water and soil (n=175, r=0.886, p<0.01). The distances from salinity sources, Tam Giang lagoon and shrimp pond, were major factors affecting the salinity concentrations. The paddy fields near Tam Giang lagoon and shrimp pond have higher salinity concentrations compared to those areas close to the residential area. The surface water in the paddy field within 1000 m from the salinity source was assessed as saline that might harm the paddy soil and rice production. Through its natural or cultivated insular population distribution, Ilex aquifolium L. is a paramount species which is exceptionally suitable for studying phenotypic variability and plasticity through the assessment of morphological, physiological, biochemical and genomic features with respect to acclimation and/or adaptation efficiency. The current study is focused on four insular populations of Ilex aquifolium from Eastern Europe (i.e., in Romania, Hungary, Serbia and Bulgaria), and presents an initial evaluation of phenotypic variability in order to conclude our research on phylogenetic relationships and phytochemical profiles, including several descriptive and quantitative morphological traits. Taken together, the data from different methods in this paper indicate that the Bulgarian and Romanian populations can be distinguished from each other and from Serbian and Hungarian populations, while the latter show a higher level of resemblance with regards to their quantitative morphological traits. It is likely that these morphological traits are determined through some quantitative trait loci implicated in stress responses generated by light, temperature, soil water, soil fertility and salinity conditions that will need to be analysed in terms of their physiological, genomic and metabolomics traits in future studies. Numerous papers studied the relations between nitrogen rate and rice yield in saline soils, whereas the rice root morphological and physiological characteristics mediating nitrogen rates in yield formation under varied salinity levels remain less concerns. Through a field experiment applied with five nitrogen rates (0, 210, 255, 300, 345, and 390 kg ha-1) in saline land, we found that rice yield peaked at 7.7 t ha-1 under 300 kg ha-1 nitrogen, and excessive N was not conductive for increasing yield. To further elucidate its internal physiological mechanism, a pot experiment was designed with three N rates (210 [N1], 300 [N2], 390 [N3] kg ha-1) and three salt concentrations (0 [S0], 1.5 [S1], 3.0 [S2] g kg-1 NaCl). Results showed that the average grain yield was decreased by 19.1 and 51.1% under S1 and S2, respectively, while notably increased by 18.5 and 14.5% under N2 and N3, respectively. Salinity stress significantly inhibited root biomass, root length and surface area, root oxidation capacity (ROC), K+ and K+/Na+ ratio, and nitrogen metabolism-related enzyme activities, whereas root Na+ and antioxidant enzyme activities were notably increased. The mechanism of how insufficient N supply (N1) affected rice yield formation was consistent at different salinity levels, which displayed adverse impacts on root morphological and physiological traits, thereby significantly inhibiting leaf photosynthesis and grain yield of rice. However, the mechanism thorough which excessive N (N3) affected yield formation was quite different under varied salinity levels. Under lower salinity (S0 and S1), no significant differences on root morphological traits and grain yield were observed except the significantly decline in activities of NR and GS between N3 and N2 treatments. Under higher salinity level (S2), the decreased ROC, K+/Na+ ratio due to increased Na+, antioxidant enzyme activities, and NR and GS activities were the main reason leading to undesirable root morphological traits and leaf photosynthesis, which further triggered decreased grain yield under N3 treatment, compared to that under N2 treatment. Overall, our results suggest that improved physiological and morphological traits of root synergistically enhanced salinity tolerance in rice under appropriate nitrogen application rate. The salinization of agriculture soils over the globe has become one of the most devastating stresses and is significantly limiting cultivated land area, and crop productivity and quality. It is very imperative to explore both salinity tolerance in plants and insights into approaches (and underlying mechanisms) for effectively controlling salinity impacts. To this end, the role of phytohormone salicylic acid (SA) and plant nutrient sulfur (S) in promoting salinity tolerance has been researched in isolated studies, and SA–S interaction results have been little discussed. Given this, taking into account recent literature on SA, S and soil salinity, this paper aimed to (i) overview of the major impacts of soil salinity on plant health; (ii) highlight the significance of SA and S in improving plant salinity tolerance; (iii) discuss the role and underlying mechanism of SA, S and their interaction in the modulation of plant growth and development under salinity stress; and also to (iv) appraise the discussed literature and enlighten the major prospects. This paper presents numerical simulations regarding the transport characteristics of soil salt. It has been recognized in recent years that the growth and output of crops in the irrigation area of the lower reaches of the Yellow River are affected by the decreased fertility of soil as a result of the transport of soil salt, due to the long-term farming, fertilization of farmland which contains a high proportion of sands. Accordingly, numerical simulations by Hydrus are carried out, in which, based on the similarity principle, two-dimensional convection-diffusion partial-differential governing equations of unsteady flow in saturated-unsaturated porous media are applied to depict the motion parameters' spatial variability of soil water in the irrigation area. And the van Genuchten equation is adopted to express the relationship between volumetric water content and soil hydraulic conductivity and negative soil water pressure. The irrigation basin of the People's Victory Canal, which is downstream of the Yellow River, is investigated in detail as an example. The findings revealed that soil salt in the irrigation region is transferred by water diffusion, with irrigation and fertilization being the primary causes of downward migration and salt accumulation. The Republic of Bashkortostan, being a major producer of agricultural products, is a risk farming area. Irrigation can significantly reduce these risks and increase crop yields. In western Bashkortostan, there is a lack of fresh water, so irrigation can be based on groundwater (fresh and brackish). The given paper analyzes the experience of irrigating perennial grasses and vegetable crops with brackish waters of different ion and salt composition. It estimates the irrigation properties of different types of natural waters by a number of empirical and natural methods. It is established that when there is drainage, sulphate calcium brackish waters can be successfully used even on heavy loamy and clay soils. In conditions of poorly drained solids, composed of poorly percolating rocks, it is necessary to arrange artifi cial drainage. In some cases, irrigation with brackish waters did not lead to soil salination but contributed to salt removal. Electrokinetic (EK) treatment is becoming increasingly important in the geotechnical field, especially for treating fine-grained soils. Above all, dredged sediments (slurries) need to be treated in order to be reutilised. Applying an electric potential difference within the soil, three phenomena take place: electrophoresis, electro-osmosis and electromigration. Negative particles move towards the positive electrode while water and cations move towards the negative electrode. Although the literature is full of cases describing the parameters that affect the EK process, there is a need to understand its limits and fields of application. This paper summarises the results collected from several case studies to understand the influence of some parameters on the efficiency of EK treatment, specifically in terms of dewatering rate. Soil conditions (soil type, pH, pore fluid salinity and water content) and set-up design parameters (electrode materials, configurations and operational mode) are analysed. Finally, parameter ranges for assessing the acceptability of electro-osmotic treatment are proposed. The results show that there are optimum values for the previously mentioned parameters that improve the dewatering and thus enhance the behaviour of the treated soils. The potential of afforestation in Egypt is high due to land availability. However, available land s for afforestation are light-textured soils with low water holding capacity (WHC). Besides, the process of used disposable diapers (UDDs) represents a big challenge, particularly in developing countries. Such UDDs contain significant amounts of super absorbent polymers (SAPs). Thus, when incorporated into the soil, could increase soil WHC. This study investigates the potential of recovered-SAPs (R-SAPs) from UDDs to enhance soil hydraulic properties and aid the survival of Eucalyptus alaticaulis seedling under drought stress. R-SAPs were mixed with the soils (in 20-L pots) at three concentrations, i.e., 0.0, 0.75, or 1.5%. Under glasshouse conditions, seedling were irrigated for 4-months to ensure seedling' establishment, then subjected to drought by terminating irrigation. The pots were weighed daily for monitoring daily evapotranspiration until the seedling' death. R-SAPs addition increased WHC, plant available water, and prolonged seedling' survival. The seedling survived for 14, 17, and 23 days for 0.0, 0.75, and 1.5%, respectively. R-SAPs at 1.5% increased the total dry weight by 10.8%. The soil moisture at the seedling' death in R-SAPs-amended soils was higher than the control, indicating that not all the water retained by R-SAPs was available for plant absorption. R-SAPs addition increased soil salinity and Na+ concentration. The reuse of UDDs for afforestation purposes could represent a novel process for UDDs and support afforestation programs. Biofortification of zinc (Zn), iron (Fe) and selenium (Se) in crops could be affected by environmental factors such as soil salinity and phosphorus supply levels, as well as by the genotypic effect. Two pot experiments were conducted with one examined the effects of P supply and salinity on plant growth and Zn, Fe and Se uptake in wheat, and the other examined genotypic differences in Zn, Fe and Se accumulation among 20 wheat genotypes. The results of the first pot study showed significant interactive effects between P supply and salinity on Zn, Fe and Se accumulation. Increasing salinity at the same P supply level increased shoot Zn concentrations, but significantly decreased total shoot Zn amount owing to decreased aboveground biomass. An increased accumulation of total shoot Fe and Se in P-added treatments, relative to the no-P treatments, was mainly due to increased aboveground biomass. The results of the second pot study showed substantial genotypic variations in Zn, Fe and Se accumulation; principal component analysis (PCA) suggested that agronomic traits and nutrient accumulation were controlled by independent genetic mechanisms. These results indicated that the amount of P supply is a key factor regulating biomass and accumulation of Zn, Fe and Se in certain saline soils; the sizable genotypic difference in Zn, Fe and Se accumulation observed in salinised conditions has provided potential scope for genetic improvement by breeding strategies. This paper deals with the effects of phosphorus (P) supply and salinity on zinc (Zn), iron (Fe) and selenium (Se) accumulation in wheat, as well as the genotypic difference in Zn, Fe and Se accumulation among genotypes. Significant interactive effects between P supply and salinity were detected on Zn, Fe and Se accumulation, suggesting that P supply is a key factor regulating biomass and accumulation of Zn, Fe and Se in certain saline soils. Soil salinization severely restricts the development of global industry and agriculture and affects human beings. In the arid area of Northwest China, oasis saline-alkali land threatens the development of agriculture and food security. This paper develops and optimizes an inversion monitoring model for monitoring the soil salt content using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) multispectral remote sensing data. Using the multispectral remote sensing data in three research areas, the soil salt inversion models based on the support vector machine regression (SVR), random forest (RF), backpropagation neural network (BPNN), and extreme learning machine (ELM) were constructed. The results show that the four constructed models based on the spectral index can achieve good inversion accuracy, and the red edge band can effectively improve the soil salt inversion accuracy in saline-alkali land with vegetation cover. Based on the obtained results, for bare land, the best model for soil salt inversion is the ELM model, which reaches the determination coefficient (Rv2) of 0.707, the root mean square error RMSEv of 0.290, and the performance deviation ratio (RPD) of 1.852 on the test dataset. However, for agricultural land with vegetation cover, the best model for soil salinity inversion using the vegetation index is the BPNN model, which achieves Rv2 of 0.836, RMSEv of 0.027, and RPD of 2.100 on the test dataset. Background Soil salinity, in both natural and managed environments, is highly heterogeneous, and understanding how plants respond to this spatiotemporal heterogeneity is increasingly important for sustainable agriculture in the era of global climate change. While the vast majority of research on crop response to salinity utilizes homogeneous saline conditions, a much smaller, but important, effort has been made in the past decade to understand plant molecular and physiological responses to heterogeneous salinity mainly by using split-root studies. These studies have begun to unravel how plants compensate for water/nutrient deprivation and limit salt stress by optimizing root-foraging in the most favourable parts of the soil. Scope This paper provides an overview of the patterns of salinity heterogeneity in rain-fed and irrigated systems. We then discuss results from split-root studies and the recent progress in understanding the physiological and molecular mechanisms regulating plant responses to heterogeneous root-zone salinity and nutrient conditions. We focus on mechanisms by which plants (salt/nutrient sensing, root-shoot signalling and water uptake) could optimize the use of less-saline patches within the root-zone, thereby enhancing growth under heterogeneous soil salinity conditions. Finally, we place these findings in the context of defining future research priorities, possible irrigation management and crop breeding opportunities to improve productivity from salt-affected lands. The widespread distributions of saline soils in Iran cause a range of problems for road construction projects due to insufficient shear strength, salt solubility potential and swelling. This paper conducts experimental tests using different cement contents and a sort of petrochemical waste with two curing methods to stabilise saline soil samples. Strength, compressibility and chemical tests were conducted, X-ray diffraction analyses were performed, and scanning electron microscope pictures were prepared for basic materials and stabilised saline soil samples in this paper. The results indicate that both petrochemical soda ash waste and cement enhance the shear strength of saline soil, especially after 28 days of curing. However, the combination is more appropriate from the swelling and salt solubility potential viewpoint. The optimum combination of 2% cement and 5% of petrochemical soda ash waste, cured by method 2 for 28 days, results in the most significant shear strength enhancement (127%). Furthermore, a swelling quantity of the optimum combination is reasonably restricted. X-ray diffraction test results and scanning electron microscope pictures demonstrated that despite the presence of ettringite agents, the formation quantity of these minerals is negligible. This paper presents the effects of flooding on the accumulation of manganese (Mn) in soils within proximity of the Boac and Mogpog rivers in Marinduque of The Philippines. Marinduque, an island province in the Philippines, experienced two catastrophic tailings storage facility (TSF) failures in the 1990s that released sulfide-rich tailings into the two major rivers. The Philippines experiences 21–23 typhoons every year, 11 of which pass thru Marinduque that causing inundation of floodplain areas in the province. A flood hazard map developed using LiDAR DEM was utilized for the Boac and Mogpog rivers for an accurate representation of flooding events. A portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (pXRF) and a Hannah multi-parameter device were used for the on-site analyses of Mn concentration and water physico-chemical properties, respectively. Spatial grid mapping with zonal statistics was employed for a comprehensive analysis of all the data collected and processed. Correlation analysis was carried out on Mn concentrations in soil and surface water, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), pH, temperature, curve number (CN), and flood heights. The curve number indicates the runoff response characteristic of the Mogpog-Boac River basin. The results show that 40% of the total floodplain area of Boac and Mogpog were subjected to high hazards with flood heights above 1.5 m. The Mn content of soils had a statistically significant moderate positive correlation with flood height (r = 0.458) and a moderate negative correlation with pH (r = −0.438). This condition suggested that more extensive flooding promotes Mn contamination of floodplain soils in the two rivers, the source of which includes the mobilization of Mn-bearing silt, sediments, and mine drainage from the abandoned mine pits and TSFs. There is also a strong negative correlation between pH and Mn concentrations in surface water, a relationship attributed to the solubilization of Mn-bearing precipitates based on geochemical modeling results. Using Muller's geo-accumulation index, 77.5% of the total floodplain of the two rivers was identified as "moderately contaminated" with an average Mn soil content of 3.4% by weight (34,000 mg/kg). The Mn contamination map of floodplain soils in the Mogpog and Boac rivers described in this study could guide relevant regional, national, and local government agencies in planning appropriate intervention, mitigation, remediation, and rehabilitation strategies to limit human exposure to highly contaminated areas. In view of the important role of vegetation in the integrity of structures and functions of coastal wetland ecosystems, the restoration of degraded coastal wetland vegetation has attracted increased attention. In this paper, the newborn coastal wetland in the Yellow River Delta (YRD) of China was selected to research the effect of salinity and oil exploitation on the germination of soil seed banks of three dominant vegetation communities. The germination experiment with three concentration gradients of NaCl and three concentration gradients of diesel treatments showed that there were 14 species present in the soil seed bank of the multi-species community: three species in the Phragmites australis community, and five species in the P. australis—Suaeda glauca community. The species in the seed bank of the three communities were much richer than the above-ground vegetation in this study. Soil salinity had a significant inhibitory effect on the seedling numbers of germinated species, the seedling density, and the species diversity of the soil seed banks, while the inhibitory effect of diesel was indistinctive under the designed concentrations. There existed significant interactions between the vegetation community type and soil salinity on the number of germinated species, the seedling density, and the Margalef index. Soil salinity is considered an important factor for wetland vegetation restoration in the YRD, but its effect had species-specific differences. Water is one of the most important and abundant resources on earth; therefore, determining easier and more accurate methods of measuring water quality has become challenging in recent years. Images of the Sentinel-2 multispectral (MSI) sensor and field measurements for three seasons and 39 spectral indices were evaluated to identify those that can be used as patterns for the generation of semi-empirical bio-optical models to predict the total dissolved solids (TDS) in surface water of freshwater wetlands. The Guartinaja and Momil wetlands, located in the Wetland Complex of Bajo Sinú, Northern Colombia, were used as references in the field. The individual bands of the Sentinel 2 MSI sensor and the spectral indices derived from these bands were tested (and will be referred to in this paper as spectral indices). They were classified as follows: 10 individual spectral bands of the MSI sensor of the Sentinel 2 satellite; 11 indices reported by the literature to determine water, vegetation, or soils; 11 indices reported to estimate salinity; and 7 to estimate total dissolved solids and proposed in this research. The indices were evaluated based on three exclusive conditions: 1) the correlation between the TDS values measured in the field and indices spectral values >0.7 for at least two sampling seasons; 2) for the three seasons, the regression models derived from the indices have a determination coefficient >0.7; and 3) the spatial correlation matrix between the images derived from the models is >0.8 for at least two out of the three analysis seasons. We achieved important results: 1) seven indices (B3, Brightness-3, SI-3, SI-5, Ferdous-2020, TDS-1, and TDS5) met the three conditions proposed above and therefore, they were preliminarily defined as patterns for estimating TDS in the selected wetlands; 2) Additionally, this research provided two new efficient indices for calculating TDS through bio-optical models: TDS-1 and TDS-5. The validation of the regression models derived from these indices indicated a high accuracy of the prediction surfaces, expressed in values <10% of the normalized root-mean-square deviation. The results of this study contribute to the determination of semi-empirical bio-optical models for predicting optically inactive water quality parameters, which are generally predicted with empirical models whose use is spatiotemporally limited. Additionally, the research contributions that are carried out to improve the methods of evaluating water quality from remote sensing products become investigations that positively impact the evaluation of water resources, especially in geographical locations in which there is no with sufficient financial resources for on-site sampling. In this paper, the effects of irrigation with different water qualities on the soil characteristics of 8 kinds of garden plants were analyzed. The results showed that soil pH (ranging at 7.76–8.73) had no significant difference in different soils compared with the contrast treatment. Under the reclaimed water irrigation, the content of soil total salinity, chloride ions, and water soluble sodium in soil of most plants was averagely 160.3%, 83.3%, and 67.5% higher than that of tap water, respectively. The influences of reclaimed water irrigation on soil nutrients were changed with the types of plants. The content of soil organic matter and the available potassium showed no significant differences in most plants. Compared with the tap water irrigation, the content of alkaline nitrogen in 5 plants increased (averagely 25.8%) after 5-year irrigation with reclaimed water. In terms of soil microorganism, the increase of soil microbial population, including bacteria, fungus and actinomycetes, has been promoted by different levels of reclaimed water irrigation, which is closely related with soil nutrients. Archie's parameters are substantial to be investigated in the evaluation of water saturation. Many researchers adhered to the opinion that Archie's equation can still be applied to water saturation calculation in shale if the accuracy of relative parameters could be improved. External conditions, such as temperature, confining pressure, water salinity, wettability, and displacement, may influence the determination of Archie's parameters. The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of salinity on Archie's parameters and their correlation with mineral composition and pore structure. The mineral contents and petrophysical properties were firstly acquired through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and basic measurements. Rock-electric experiments under different salinity were conducted on deep shale samples taken from Longmaxi (LMX) Formation in Luzhou (LZ). The results indicate that Archie's parameters of " a ," " b ," " m ," and " n " under actual brine salinity are assigned to 1.47, 1, 1.26, and 1.6, respectively. Our cementation factor is lower than that in other studies including (shaly) sandstones, carbonates, and shales, probably due to the extremely low porosity in study area. Salinity has a positive effect on cementation factor (m) and saturation exponent (n), suggesting the traditional assignment to Archie's parameters is inappropriate. It was concluded that the complicated pore structure and high porosity mainly associated with clay mineral may trigger the increased cementation factor. Further mathematical derivations confirmed that the rock resistivity is inextricable from pore system and establish a physical model. The paper provides a solid evidence base for further understanding and evaluation of water saturation in unconventional shale reservoirs, more significantly, innovatively unveils the research into Archie formula in deep shale reservoirs of southern Sichuan basin. An environmental challenge of significant concern, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions, is soil salinity, which has adverse effects on soil productivity and agricultural fields. Remote sensing technologies have emerged as a highly promising method for monitoring affected areas, playing a crucial role in land management studies. This paper focuses on estimating soil salinity, soil moisture, and vegetation conditions using Landsat 7 and 8-satellite imagery for the years 2000 to 2019 in a region severely affected by salinity-related issues. We calculated several indices in this study, specifically the Soil Salinity Brightness Index (BI), Salinity Index (SI), and Normalized Difference Salinity Index (NDSI). We conducted a field study to measure the pH and Electrical Conductivity (EC) of various soil samples. The results indicated significant increase in soil salinity due to past droughts and subsequent reductions in humidity in the studied area, which led to the loss of vegetation in Iran's central plateau (Dehshir). The highest levels of soil salinity were observed in the northern and southeastern parts of the region. One of the primary causes of salinization was the occurrence of past droughts and the subsequent desiccation of salt lake. According to the laboratory tests conducted on soil samples, it was observed that in certain sample basins, the pH level reached 8.5, indicating alkaline and sodic soil. Furthermore, the most significant decrease in NDVI values was identified in the northeast and southeast regions of Dehshir. LAND degradation is one of the most important consequences of climate change that has socioeconomic repercussions world-wide, particularly in Egypt's Nile Delta region. It is therefore essential to inform of timely measurements of land degradation and identify its causes for the security of populations living on and near the Nile Delta. This paper calculates the Environmental Sensitivity Index using the MEDALUS-GEE (Mediterranean Desertification and Land Use in the Google Earth Engine) approach within two of Egypt's most climate-affected governorates, Alexandria and Beheira, on the district level. Results show that most of the districts in Alexandria is highly sensitive to climate change and is unsuitable for farming owing to their proximity to the Mediterranean Sea. The rise in sea level leads to the submergence of many lands. Besides, as a result of the geological composition of the region, seawater seeps into groundwater, all of which in turn was reflected in the rise in soil salinity. Also, the highest degree of land degradation and/or desertification was found in the hinterland of the Beheira Governorate, including high soil salinity and groundwater, which makes it difficult to undertake land reclamation and cultivation. Soil microbial communities perform vital ecosystem functions, such as the decomposition of organic matter to provide plant nutrition. However, despite the functional importance of soil microorganisms, attribution of ecosystem function to particular constituents of the microbial community has been impeded by a lack of information linking microbial function to community composition and structure. Here, we propose a function‐first framework to predict how microbial communities influence ecosystem functions. We first view the microbial community associated with a specific function as a whole and describe the dependence of microbial functions on environmental factors (e.g., the intrinsic temperature dependence of bacterial growth rates). This step defines the aggregate functional response curve of the community. Second, the contribution of the whole community to ecosystem function can be predicted, by combining the functional response curve with current environmental conditions. Functional response curves can then be linked with taxonomic data in order to identify sets of "biomarker" taxa that signal how microbial communities regulate ecosystem functions. Ultimately, such indicator taxa may be used as a diagnostic tool, enabling predictions of ecosystem function from community composition. In this paper, we provide three examples to illustrate the proposed framework, whereby the dependence of bacterial growth on environmental factors, including temperature, pH, and salinity, is defined as the functional response curve used to interlink soil bacterial community structure and function. Soil is a vital resource for feeding the burgeoning global population, and it is also essential for realizing most of the 'United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)'. For example, it is vital to realizing the 'Zero hunger (SDG2), Good health and well‐being (SDG3), Clean water and sanitation (SDG6), and Life on land (SDG15)'. Excess salts present in the soil make it saline, and it poses a significant threat to agricultural production and environmental health. Soil salinity is an extensive problem and spreads over one billion hectares extended over 100 countries. This paper presents a comprehensive review of global soil salinity management through the applications of remote sensing and GIS. All possible sources of relevant and current literature were accessed and more than 260 publications were collected and carefully analysed, for this review. The rationale and severity of the salinity problem are provided. The impact of salinity on plant yield and the effect of climate change on soil salinity are detailed. The salinity indicators and salinity monitoring and mapping are provided, and the global cases of soil salinity management through remote sensing and GIS applications under different agro‐hydro‐climatic environments are discussed, followed by a summary of conclusions and challenges along with future research directions. The analysis of past investigations showed that remote sensing strategy might be a practical approach to adequately assess plant response such as evapotranspiration under diverse salinity environments, yet it additionally has various difficulties. The lower spatial and temporal resolution of imagery may reason errors because of subpixel heterogeneity. During the water crisis of 2015–2016, the construction of small earth-filled dams grew to supply irrigated crops of the north of Espírito Santo-ES, Brazil. This paper reports the hydrogeochemical study of eight reservoirs conducted between 10/2016 to 11/2017 to assess the water suitability for agricultural purposes and its risk to irrigation systems. The reservoirs of São Mateus (SM) are located in large drainage basins with many impoundments upstream. Nova Venecia's reservoirs (NV) have small and circular drainage areas with few, or any, upstream dams. The results are consistent with freshwater classification and Na-Cl composition to all reservoirs. Nevertheless, canonical discriminant analysis and Spearman's coefficients revealed distinct composition and patterns of correlations between municipalities. The mean permeability index of 53 and the low risk of sodicity and salinization (C1S1) demonstrate that these waters' use is harmless to the soil and crops. However, the phosphate contents make the new reservoirs susceptible to algae blooms. The same reservoirs also presented total solids and Fe levels above the tolerable limit for safety irrigation use, imposing a severe risk of clogging. The low replenishment of SM's reservoirs reflects the dispute over water resulting from the high number of impoundments in these drainage areas. The drought that preceded the study diminished the drainage basins' vegetation cover, favoring soil particles' runoff, elevating the TS and Fe levels, especially in the recently built reservoirs. Mitogen-activated protein kinase cascades are one of the many systems that allow plants to survive and defend themselves against pathogens and other environmental stresses. Numerous scientific investigations rendered insights to molecular signaling pathways that take place in an event of a stress such as soil salinity. Despite the known functions and locations of proteins that play a role in these pathways, very little is known about upstream protein partners. In this paper, we elucidate biological functions and molecular locations of Arabidopsis thaliana MKK1 protein through data mining predominantly from STRING and BAR databases. Anion exclusion is an important phenomenon in agricultural, environmental and engineering fields which still needs suitable quantitative models. In this work, a novel model is proposed which considers the porous media as parallel capillaries with negatively charged walls that cause total anion exclusion at a distance from the walls. By defining the 'anion velocity coefficient', υ−, as the ratio of anion velocity to pore fluid velocity, equations to estimate the value of υ− at the injection inlet have been derived by three different methods, namely from the profiles' data, υ−data, from the concentration ratio at the inlet, υ−rc, and from the electrical double layer thickness model, υ−EDL. Finally, a simple sensitivity analysis for the third method has been presented. The estimates of υ− presented in this paper were examined versus 22 data points for nitrate solution flow in initially dry soil columns for various soil and salt types and solution concentrations. The coefficient of determination between υ−data and υ−rc for the whole dataset was 0.7755. Also, the υ−rc estimate could predict the υ− value estimated from the breakthrough anion concentration curve for available data of an advective injection test in a clayey rock. As a result, when anion exclusion dominates, the anion flux decreases but the anion velocity increases. In the case of using nitrate fertilisers, this point may be used to regulate the amount of optimal irrigation and also to explain the extent of contamination of a distant groundwater body. In various parts of the world, agricultural exploitation faces saline soil or water, such that cultivable species tend to be limited regarding the establishment of seedlings, with effects on productivity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of salinity levels associated with different temperatures on the germination, initial development, and oxidative damage indicators of purple corn seedlings. The experiment was completely randomized in a 5 × 2 factorial design (moistening of the germination paper with 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 mM NaCl solutions at temperatures of 25 and 30°C). The parameters evaluated were germination, growth, and oxidative damage indicators at the seedling phase. The germinative decline and initial development of purple corn seedlings, regardless of the temperature (25 and 30°C), reflected oxidative damage resulting from saline stress. Although deleterious effects of salinity were observed, a temperature of 30°C provided greater length and accumulation of dry mass of purple corn seedlings compared to the effects at 25°C. Total chlorophyll, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total carotenoids, and lipid peroxidation, regardless of the temperature (25 and 30°C), were identified as sensitive biochemical indicators for the detection of physiological quality of purple corn seedlings subjected to NaCl.
