A calagem ? poss?vel corrigir quimicamente os solos, tornando-os agricult?veis. A amora-preta ? uma fruta que vem ganhando espa?o no mercado brasileiro. Existe a necessidade de obter os ?ndices adequados de acidez do solo e estudar a efici?ncia nutricional das amoreiras-pretas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi obter os ?ndices de acidez do solo que melhor expressam o potencial produtivo e efici?ncia nutricional de cultivares de amoreira-pretas em solos ?cidos submetidos ? calagem. Para isso, quatro cultivares de amoreira-preta foram utilizadas, sendo elas a ?BRS Tupy?, ?Brazos?, ?Guarani? e ?BRS Xavante?, cultivadas em dois solos ?cidos, classificados como LATOSSOLO VERMELHO-AMARELO distr?fico e LATOSSOLO VERMELHO distr?fico. O experimento foi realizado em delineamento em blocos casualizados, com tr?s repeti??es em casa de vegeta??o, com quatro doses de calc?rio dolom?tico, sendo as doses de 0; 1,5; 3,0 e 6,0 Mg ha-1 para ambos os solos. Foram avaliados os atributos qu?micos do solo como pH em ?gua, teores de K, Ca, Mg e Al, satura??o de Al, satura??o por bases, satura??o de Ca, Mg e K, al?m da produ??o e mat?ria seca de frutos, hastes, folhas e ra?zes, os teores de nutrientes em cada parte da planta e a efici?ncia nutricional de cada cultivar. N?o houve diferen?a significativa entre os solos. A resposta da produ??o de frutos das quatro cultivares foi semelhante ? aplica??o da calagem. A cultivar ?BRS Tupy? se destacou com a maior produ??o de frutos e mat?ria seca, at? mesmo sem calagem com maiores conte?dos de nutrientes nos frutos e maior efici?ncia nutricional em rela??o ? ?Brazos?, ?BRS Xavante? e ?Guarani?. Most Brazilian soils have high acidity, harming the development of most crops. The liming is possible to chemically correct the soils, making them arable. The blackberry is a fruit that has been gaining ground in the Brazilian market. There is a need to obtain adequate the soil acidity indexes and to study the nutritional efficiency of blackberries. The objective of this work was to obtain the soil acidity indexes that best express the productive potential and nutritional efficiency of blackberry cultivars in acidic soils submitted to liming. For this, four cultivars of blackberry were used, namely 'BRS Tupy', 'Brazos', 'Guarani' and 'BRS Xavante', cultivated in two acidic soils, classified as Xantic Hapludox and Rhodic Hapludox (Oxisols). The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design, with three replications in a greenhouse, with four rates of dolomitic limestone, with rates of 0; 1.5; 3.0 and 6.0 Mg ha-1 for both soils. Soil chemical attributes such as pH in water, K, Ca, Mg and Al concentrations, Al saturation, base saturation, Ca, Mg and K saturation, in addition to yield and dry matter of fruits, stems, leaves and roots, the nutrient concentrations in each part of the plant and the nutritional efficiency of each cultivar were evaluated. There was no significant difference between the soils. The fruit yield response of the four cultivars was similar in relation to lime rates and the two soils. 'BRS Tupy' was the cultivar that produced the most in all limestone rates, followed by 'Brazos', 'BRS Xavante' and 'Guarani', certainly due to differences in genetic characteristics. Liming is an essential practice for the cultivation of blackberry in acidic soils, as it was through this practice that adequate chemical attributes were reached for greater expression of the productive potential of the culture cultivated in acidic soils, which were: pH in water of 5.6, maximum tolerated aluminum saturation of 6 %, Ca and Mg requirement of 45.3 mmolc dm-3 and base saturation of 48.3 %.

Chemical fertilizers (CF) are the major input on arable farms in Nigeria. Current increasing rate of nutrient depletion in CF treated soils calls for the need to study their reactions in soils. To achieve this, three CF based treatments, namely NPK 15:15:15 applied at 40 kg P2O5 ha-1, Urea applied at 20 kg N ha-1 mixed with Single superphosphate at 40 kg P2O5 ha-1, and single superphosphate at 40 kg P2O5 ha-1 mixed with Gliricidia sepium leaves at 20 kg N ha-1 were studied. Sole lime (CaCO3) at 1 Mg ha-1 and a plot that received no amendment were compared. Cowpea was grown for two consecutive cropping seasons in 2012 and 2013 on the treated fields. The results indicated that CF reduced soil pH from initial 4.8 to 4.0. The NPK 15:15:15 fertilizer was the most severe of the CF tested, removing up to 133% alkalinity from the soil relative to lime. The NPK 15:15:15 reduced calcium saturation (from 25% to 21%) and magnesium saturation (from 12% to 8.3%) and increased acidity saturation (from 53% to 66%) with significant reductions in organic carbon content (from 13.2 g kg-1 to 11.0 g kg-1). Precaution including co-application of CF with organic materials such as Gliricidia sepium leaves can benefit for the soils.

Taking into account the fact that (a) measurement of the cation exchange capacity and base saturation is practically unavailable in the field, that formally makes impossible the reliable field classification of many soils, (b) base saturation is measured or calculated by various methods those results significantly differ, (c) base saturation and soil pH are highly positively correlated, it is suggested to replace the base saturation with pHw (measured in distilled/deionized water suspension) in the classification criteria for diagnostic horizons and soil units/subunits, both in the Polish Soil Classification and FAO-WRB. Based on statistical analysis of 4500 soil samples, the following pHw values are recommended instead of 50% base saturation: pHw w ≥5.5 for the mollic horizon, and for Chernozems, Kastanozems, Phaeozems (directly) and Umbrisols (indirectly). Furthermore, the pHw w ≥4.7 may feature the Eutric qualifier. The distinction between subtypes of the brown soils in the Polish Soil Classification may base on the pHw 4.7 or 5.0, but using different requirements of pH distribution in the depth control section. The replacement of the base saturation with pH refers to the formal soil classification only, and does not exclude the use of base saturation for professional soil characteristics.

The addition of limestone to the soil may cause clay dispersion and loss. In this study, we aimed to estimate clay dispersion and loss in Oxisol incubated with different concentrations of limestone. To this end, soil samples were collected from a depth of 0.0-0.20 m, treated with limestone at a concentration of 1.46 Mg ha-1 or 2.73 Mg ha-1 to raise base saturation to 60% and 70%, respectively, and incubated for 12 months under greenhouse conditions. Clay dispersion analysis was conducted monthly using the test tube method. The results showed that clay dispersion increased with soil pH and time after limestone application. However, no significant change in clay concentration was identified in the control (no limestone application). At 60% base saturation, clay loss was first observed to be significantly higher than that of the control at 4 months after application and reached a maximum at 9 months after application. At 70% base saturation, clay loss was also first observed to be significantly higher than that of the control at 4 months after application and reached a maximum at 6 months after application. Overall, our data revealed that clay dispersion due to limestone application was approximately 16 g kg-1 over a period of 12 months and increased with the increasing concentrations of Ca and Mg. A calagem afeta a dupla camada difusa através das cargas que ocasionam repulsão ou coesão das argilas e, como consequência, interfere na sua floculação/dispersão. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar a perda de argila em um Latossolo Vermelho incubado com e sem calcário em duas saturações por bases. Amostras de solo foram coletadas na camada de 0,00 - 0,20 m de profundidade e acondicionadas em vasos de 0,20 m de altura, com volume de 0,0049 m3. Foi utilizado o calcário dolomítico nas saturações por base de 60 % e 70 % (1,46 e 2,73 Mg ha-1) e a incubação foi durante 12 meses. A cada mês, uma alíquota era coletada e realizada análise da dispersão de argila pelo método da proveta. À medida que decorreu o tempo, houve aumento da quantidade de argila dispersa em função do aumento do pH. Para a saturação de bases a 60 %, as perdas de argila aconteceram a partir do quarto mês após aplicação do calcário, em torno de 6 g kg-1, e houve decréscimo do nono mês em diante. Para 70 % de saturação foi observado aumento também no quinto mês, de 10 g kg-1 de argila perdida. A testemunha se manteve estável ao longo do período. À medida que ocorre o efeito da calagem no solo, as perdas de argila em relação à testemunha ficam em torno de 16 g kg-1 ao longo do período. Calcários com teores elevados de Ca e Mg tendem a ser mais dispersivos.

The paper deals with physico-chemical properties of Regosols in Bulgaria. Ten soil profiles are studied in North and South part of the country. These soils are spread mainly on unconsolidated rocks (regolith), slopes and eroded terrains in semi-arid areas. Sediments in these areas are manly alkaline with good sorption capacity. Regosols are moderately acidic to slightly alkaline soils. Exchangeable Ca2+ is almost equal to the soil cation exchange capacity. The amount of exchangeable Ca2+ is between 8 to 26 mequ/100g. Regosols have high base saturation from 75 to 100 %.

Successive applications of liquid swine waste to the soil can increase the contents of total organic carbon and nutrients and change acidity-related soil chemical properties. However, little information is available on the effects of swine waste application in solid form, as of swine deep-litter. The objective of this study was to evaluate alterations of organic carbon and acidity-related properties of a soil after eight years of pig slurry and deep-litter application. In the eighth year of a field experiment established in Braço do Norte, Santa Catarina (SC) on a sandy Typic Hapludalf samples were taken (layers 0-2.5; 2.5-5; 5-10; 10-15; 15-20 and 20-30 cm) from unfertilized plots and plots with pig slurry or deep-litter applications, providing the simple or double rate of N requirement of Zea mays and Avena strigosa in rotation. Soil total organic carbon, water pH, exchangeable Al, Ca and Mg, and cation exchange capacity (CECeffective and CECpH7.0), H+Al, base saturation, and aluminum saturation were measured. The application of pig slurry and deep-litter for eight years increased total organic carbon and CEC in all soil layers. The pig slurry and deep-litter applications reduced active acidity and aluminum saturation and increased base saturation down to a depth of 30 cm. Eight years of pig slurry application did not affect soil acidity. As aplicações sucessivas de dejetos de suínos, na forma líquida, podem incrementar os teores de carbono orgânico total no solo e de nutrientes, bem como alterar os atributos relacionados à acidez do solo, porém há pouca informação acerca do efeito do uso de cama sobreposta de suínos sobre os atributos da acidez do solo e o carbono orgânico. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar a alteração nos teores de carbono orgânico e nos atributos relacionados à acidez em um solo com histórico de aplicação de dejetos líquidos de suínos e cama sobreposta. Após oito anos da instalação de um experimento localizado no município de Braço do Norte, Santa Catarina (SC), sobre um Argissolo Vermelho, foram coletadas amostras de solo nas camadas de 0-2,5, 2,5-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20 e 20-30 cm, em tratamentos sem aplicação de dejeto e com a aplicação de dejetos líquidos de suínos e de cama sobreposta de suínos em duas doses: para suprir uma e duas vezes a necessidade de N para a sucessão milho e aveia-preta. O solo foi seco, moído, passado em peneira e submetido à análise de carbono orgânico total, pH em água, Al, Ca e Mg trocáveis; com base nos dados obtidos, calcularam-se a capacidade de troca de cátions efetiva (CTCefetiva) e a pH 7.0 (CTCpH7,0), H+Al e a saturação por bases e Al. Os resultados mostram que as aplicações de dejetos líquidos de suínos e cama sobreposta durante oito anos aumentaram o teor de COT e a CTC no solo até a profundidade de 30 cm. A aplicação de cama sobreposta de suínos diminuiu os valores de acidez ativa e de saturação por Al e aumentou os valores de saturação por bases até 30 cm de profundidade. O uso de dejetos líquidos por oito anos não provocou nem acidificação nem correção da acidez do solo, indicando que o efeito desse resíduo nos atributos da acidez do solo foi pequeno ou nulo.

Pig slurry application as soil manure can alter the chemical properties of the soil and affect its acidity, modifying the environment for crop growth and development. The objective of this study was to evaluate the chemical properties related to soil acidity subjected to successive applications of pig slurry. The experiment was conducted in May 2000, in an experimental area of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) under no-tillage and lasted until January 2008. Nineteen surface applications of 0, 20, 40, and 80 m³ ha-1 of pig slurry were performed, during a period of 100 months and the soil sampled in the end (layers 0-2, 2-4, 4-6, 6-8, 8-10, 10-12, 12-14, 14-16, 16-18, 18-20, 20-25, 25-30, 30-35, 35-40, 40-50 and 50-60 cm). The application of pig slurry increased soil pH values, an effect that could reach the depth of 8 cm without affecting the potential acidity values. The applications also resulted in accumulation of Ca and Mg exchangeable levels in the surface layers, increasing base saturation and reducing Al saturation. Long-term applications induced an increase in organic matter in the deeper layers. However, the effect of this residue on the potential CEC was less significant and restricted to the surface layers. A aplicação de dejetos como adubo ao solo pode alterar os atributos químicos deste e afetar a sua acidez, modificando o ambiente para o crescimento e desenvolvimento das culturas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a alteração de atributos químicos relacionados à acidez de um solo submetido a aplicações sucessivas de dejeto líquido de suínos. O experimento foi instalado em maio de 2000, em área experimental sob plantio direto pertencente à Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM) e conduzido até janeiro de 2008. Foram realizadas 19 aplicações superficiais de 0, 20, 40 e 80 m³ ha-1 de dejeto líquido de suínos, durante 100 meses. Ao final, foi coletado solo nas camadas de 0-2, 2-4, 4-6, 6-8, 8-10, 10-12, 12-14, 14-16, 16-18, 18-20, 20-25, 25-30, 30-35, 35-40, 40-50 e 50-60 cm. A aplicação de dejeto líquido de suínos aumentou os valores de pH do solo, podendo o incremento atingir a profundidade de 8 cm, sem alteração nos valores de acidez potencial. Também promoveu acúmulo dos teores trocáveis de Ca e Mg nas camadas superficiais do solo, aumentando os valores de saturação por bases e diminuindo a saturação por Al. As aplicações ao longo do tempo possibilitaram aumento no teor de MO em profundidade. Entretanto, o efeito desses dejetos sobre a CTC potencial foi menos significativo e restrito à camada superficial.

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar se a ocorrência de alta saturação por Al e baixa saturação por bases em subsuperfície (0,10-0,20 m), no plantio direto, pode representar um ambiente restritivo para a produção de culturas, bem como avaliar os modos de incorporação de calcário na correção da acidez do solo em subsuperfície. Para isso, foi realizado um experimento com os cultivos de soja (2005/ 2006), milho (2006/2007), trigo (2007) e soja (2007/2008), em um Latossolo Vermelho distrófico típico (Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária (EMBRAPA), 2006) de textura franco arenosa, há quatro anos sob plantio direto, no município de Tupanciretã (RS). Os seis tratamentos foram: sem revolvimento com ou sem calcário; lavração com ou sem calcário; e escarificação com ou sem calcário. Aos 24 meses após a aplicação dos tratamentos e nas camadas de 0-0,05, 0,05-0,10, 0,10-0,15, 0,15-0,20 e 0,20-0,30 m, foram avaliados os valores de pH-H2O, saturação por Al e por bases. Avaliou-se a produtividade de soja (2005/2006), milho (2006/2007), trigo (2007) e soja (2007/2008). A acidez do solo em subsuperfície não alterou a produtividade das culturas quando as propriedades de acidez na camada de 0-0,10 m estavam em níveis em que não se recomenda a aplicação de calcário, segundo a CQFSRS/SC (2004). A incorporação de calcário com aração foi o modo mais eficiente de corrigir a acidez em profundidade. In Rio Grande do Sul State (RS), Southern Brazil, aluminum saturation in many areas under no-till system is high and base saturation low in the 0.10-0.20 m layer (subsurface), which may reduce the grain yield of annual crops. The objective of this study was to evaluate if the occurrence of high aluminum saturation and low base saturation in the subsurface, under a no-till system, represents a restrictive environment for crop production, as well as to evaluate forms of lime incorporation for soil acidity correction in the subsurface. For this purpose, an experiment was carried out with soybean (2005/2006), corn (2006/2007), wheat (2007) and soybean (2007/2008) crops, in a Rhodic Hapludox (USDA, 1999) with sandy loam texture, under no-till for four years in the county of Tupanciretã (RS). The six treatments were: no-tillage with and without lime, plowing with and without lime, and chiseling with and without lime. The values of pH-H2O, aluminum saturation and base saturation were evaluated 24 months after treatment application in the layers 0-0.05; 0.05-0.10; 0.10-0.15; 0.15-0.20 and 0.20-0.30 m. The yields of soybean (2005/2006), corn (2006/2007), wheat (2007) and soybean (2007/2008) were evaluated. Soil acidity in the subsurface did not affect crop yield when the acidity in the layer from 0-0.10 m was at levels for which lime application is not recommended, according to CQFSRS/SC (2004). Lime incorporation through plowing was the most efficient way of correcting acidity at deeper levels. A acidez do solo e variáveis associadas são muito importantes nos manejos dos solos, especialmente nas regiões tropicais e subtropicais. Com o objetivo de estudar algumas variáveis da acidez do solo e verificar a influência da mineralogia da fração argila sobre a relação entre pH em CaCl2 e grau de saturação por bases (V), amostraram-se os horizontes B e C de diferentes classes de solo no Estado do Paraná: Latossolo Bruno ácrico húmico (LBw-1), Latossolo Bruno distrófico húmico (LBw-2), Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico húmico (LVdf), Cambissolo Háplico alumínico típico (CXa) e Cambissolo Húmico distroférrico típico (CHd). A fração argila foi estudada por difratometria de raios X, análise termodiferencial, análise termogravimétrica e análises químicas. As amostras de solo foram incubadas por 60 dias, após terem recebido doses crescentes de óxido de cálcio, para atingir valores preestabelecidos do grau de saturação por bases (natural, 25, 45, 60, 70, 125 e 150 %). Em seguida, determinaram-se os teores de cátions trocáveis e os valores de pH em H2O e solução de CaCl2 1 mol L-1. Os solos apresentaram o seguinte comportamento quanto à mineralogia da fração argila: mais esmectítico/vermiculítico - CXa; mais oxídico, principalmente óxidos de Fe - LVdf e óxidos de Al - LBw1; mais caulinítico, com menores teores de óxidos de Fe e Al - CHd e LBw2. Essa diversidade mineralógica foi determinante na relação pH em CaCl2 e grau de saturação por bases (V) dos solos. As curvas que mostraram essa relação foram não lineares, o que significa poder tamponante diferenciado ao longo da faixa de pH em CaCl2 estudada; formato convexo dos solos mais oxídicos e côncavo dos solos cauliníticos e com argila 2:1. O formato convexo das curvas foi conseqüência da formação de cargas negativas e dissociação de H+ preferencialmente a valores elevados de pH em CaCl2 (acima de 5), devido à menor acidez (PCZ mais alto) dos radicais Fe-OH e Al-OH. O formato côncavo foi atribuído a cargas permanentes e a maior dissociação de H+ a valores menores de pH em CaCl2 (abaixo de pH 5), uma vez que o radical Si-OH é considerado um ácido forte (PCZ baixo). Para um mesmo pH em CaCl2 verificou-se a seguinte seqüência nos valores de V em função da mineralogia da fração argila: solos com predomínio de óxidos de Fe e Al < solos com predomínio de caulinita < solos cauliníticos com minerais 2:1. The soil acidity and associated variables are very important on soil management, especially at tropical and subtropical regions. In order to study some soil acidity variables and verify the influence of clay mineralogy on the relationship between pH and base saturation degree (V%), soil samples were collected from B and C horizons of different soil classes in Paraná State: Acric Red-Yellow Latossol (LBw-1), Dystric Red-Yellow Latossol (LBw-2), Dusky Red Latosol (LVdf), Alumic Cambisol (CXa) and Dystric Cambisol (CHd). The clay fraction was studied by X-ray diffraction, thermal differential, thermal gravimetric and chemical analysis. Soil samples were incubated for 60 days, after treatment with increasing calcium oxide rates, in order to reach determined degrees of base saturation (native, 25, 45, 60, 70, 125, and 150 %). Then, the exchangeable base contents and pH in H2O and CaCl2 0.01 mol L-1 were determined. Results indicated the following clay mineralogy composition in the soils: smectite/vermiculite - CXa; Fe oxide - LVdf, Al oxide - LBw1; Kaolinite with low contents of Fe and Al oxide - CHd and LBw2. This diversity in clay mineralogy was important for the CaCl2 pH with base saturation (V%) relationship. The curves show that this relationship is non-linear, meaning that buffer capacity varies in the evaluated pH range. A convex curve represents a more oxidic soil, while a concave curve represents a kaolinitic soil with 2:1 clay. The convex curve shape was result of the negative charge formation and preferential H+ dissociation at high pH (above pH 5), since Fe-OH and Al-OH act as weak acid (high PZC). The concave shape was attributed to the presence of permanent charges and high dissociation capacity of H+ at low pH (below pH 5), since the Si-OH acts as strong acid (low PZC). For the same pH in CaCl2 the following sequence of V % values were observed as a function of clay mineralogy: soil with predominance of Fe and Al oxide < soil with predominance of Kaolinite < soil with predominance of Kaolinite with 2:1 clay.

O tempo de cultivo do solo no sistema plantio direto (SPD) altera a magnitude das relações entre os componentes da acidez do solo e o rendimento das culturas. Altos rendimentos podem ser obtidos nesse sistema mesmo em áreas com alta acidez. Assim, é provável que o critério de calagem utilizado no sistema convencional (SC) de cultivo não seja adequado para o SPD. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os critérios para recomendação de calagem em seis lavouras no SPD representativas da região do Planalto do RS. Foram selecionadas lavouras com alta variabilidade dos indicadores de acidez do solo. Para cada lavoura, foram avaliados 20 locais. Em cada local, foram coletadas amostras de solo das camadas de 0-10 e 0-20 cm e foi avaliado o rendimento de grãos. Nas amostras de solo, foram determinados o pH em água e CaCl2, o índice SMP, os teores de Ca, Mg e Al trocáveis, de MO, de P e K disponíveis. Com base nas relações entre os indicadores de acidez do solo e o rendimento de grãos, concluiu-se que nenhum dos indicadores de acidez do solo, quando utilizados isoladamente, descreve de modo adequado o rendimento das plantas no solo cultivado no SPD consolidado. Nas duas camadas avaliadas, o rendimento relativo foi sempre maior que 65 % quando o pH em água e em CaCl2 foi maior que 5,5 e 5,1, respectivamente; a saturação por bases, maior que 65 %; o Al trocável, menor que 0,3 cmol c dm-3; e a saturação por Al, menor que 5 %. Para avaliação da acidez do solo em SPD com a finalidade de recomendar calagem, podem ser utilizadas tanto a camada de 0-10 como a de 0-20 cm de profundidade. No-tillage systems can change the ratio between soil acidity components and crop yields over the course of time. High crop yields are not seldom observed in highly acid soils. The liming criteria established for conventional tillage soils are likely to be unsuitable for no-tillage soils. The objective of this report was to define liming criteria, based on the yield response to different soil acidity levels and layers in no-tillage systems. Six plantations were sampled in the Planalto region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, with very distinct soil acidity conditions, and that have been cultivated in no-tillage system over a long period. Soil samples were taken from two soil layers (0-10 and 0-20 cm) and yields determined at 20 sites of each plantation. Based on regressions between relative grain yield and soil acidity indexes, it can be concluded that none of the soil acidity indicators individually can properly describe crop yield in the no-tillage system. Though significant, the relations between soil acidity indexes and crop yield were low and similar, independent of the soil layer. Thus, either soil layer can be used for liming diagnostic in no-tillage.

Crop production in Argentina has significantly increased over the past few years; this increase was consequence of better management practices which included P and N fertilization and, occasionally, S fertilization. Commonly used rates, however, are not sufficient to balance nutrients export in grain crops. This situation is particularly negative for meso-nutrients (Ca+2 and Mg+2) because they are not normally applied by farmers. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of lime over four years period on soybean, one year period on wheat and on a one year double cropped wheat/soybean combination on no-till. The experimental design was a randomized complete blocks design with three replications and two combinations of lime (with and without). Results showed that lime application significantly increased soil pH, exchangeable Ca+2 content, and therefore, base saturation and Ca+2 saturation in cation exchangeable capacity (CEC). As average growing seasons, the relative increments due to lime application were 8, 22, 18, and 20% for pH, soil exchangeable Ca+2 content, base saturation and Ca+2 saturation in CEC, respectively. Results showed that soil bulk density and penetration resistance were not affected by lime application. Soil structure stability was significantly affected by lime application. Wheat grain yield was not affected by lime, but soybean grain yield was significantly increased by lime (7% average across year). Cumulative grain yield was significantly increased by lime application indicating that the benefits of liming were cumulative over time (27,556 vs 28,629 kg ha−1 for lime and no lime, respectively). Increments in relative grain yield were not associated with soil pH in both crops; however, significant relationships were determined between relative soybean grain yield and soil Ca+2 content, base saturation and Ca+2 content in CEC. A soil Ca+2 critical concentration of 12.4 meq 100 g−1 was determined to obtain 95% of relative soybean grain yield. The study concluded that soil Ca+2 content would limit soybean grain yield as a consequence of cation unbalance in intensive agriculture soil. Fil: Barbieri, Pablo Andres. Existem informações conflitantes a respeito da eficiência da aplicação superficial de calcário em sistema plantio direto, particularmente na correção da acidez do subsolo, e de critérios de recomendação de calagem para tal sistema de cultivo. Com o objetivo de avaliar a correção da acidez do solo e a produção de grãos de culturas em rotação no sistema plantio direto, considerando a aplicação de calcário na superfície, foi realizado um experimento em um Latossolo Vermelho-Escuro distrófico textura média, em Ponta Grossa (PR), no período de 1993 a 1998. Os tratamentos, dispostos em blocos completos ao acaso com três repetições, constaram de quatro doses de calcário dolomítico: 0, 2, 4 e 6 t ha-1, calculadas para elevar a saturação por bases do solo a 50, 70 e 90%. O calcário foi aplicado em julho de 1993, a lanço, na superfície do solo. Foram cultivados, na seqüência, soja (1993/94), milho (1994/95), soja (1995/96), trigo (1996), soja (1996/97), triticale (1997) e soja (1997/98). A aplicação de calcário na superfície aumentou significativamente o pH, os teores de Ca + Mg trocáveis e a saturação por bases e reduziu significativamente os teores de H + Al do solo, até a profundidade de 60 cm. Estimou-se que a máxima eficiência técnica (MET) e a econômica (MEE) ocorreriam, respectivamente, com as doses de 3,8 e 3,3 t ha-1 de calcário. A dose de calcário para MEE foi a indicada pelo método da elevação da saturação por bases do solo a 65%, para amostra coletada na profundidade de 0-20 cm, mostrando ser este critério adequado para recomendação de calagem na superfície em sistema plantio direto. Todavia, a calagem na superfície deve ser recomendada somente para solo com pH (CaCl2) inferior a 5,6 ou saturação por bases inferior a 65%, na camada de 0-5 cm. The efficiency of surface application of lime under a no-tillage system is doubtful, particularly with regard to subsoil acidity and to methods of lime requirement determination. A field experiment was carried out on a dystrophic Dark Red Latosol (Haplortox) from Ponta Grossa, Paraná, Brazil, from 1993 to 1998, to evaluate the extent of downward movement of lime applied on the surface under a no-tillage system, and the effect on crop rotation grain yields. A randomized complete block design was used, with three replications. The treatments consisted of dolomitic limestone, at the rates of 0, 2, 4 and 6 t ha-1, calculated to raise the soil base saturation in the 0-20 cm layer, to 50, 70 and 90%. The lime was applied in July 1993. Soybean (1993/94), corn (1994/95), soybean (1995/96), wheat (1996), soybean (1996/97), triticale (1997) and soybean (1997/98) were cultivated, in this sequence. Liming decreased H + Al concentration and increased pH, exchangeable Ca + Mg and soil base saturation up to 60 cm depth. The maximum yield (MTY) and the maximum economic yield (MEY) were obtained, at the 3.8 and 3.3 t ha-1 of limestone. The lime rate to attain MEY was that estimated by the soil base saturation method at 65%, in the 0-20 cm layer, showing this to be an appropriate method for liming recommendation on the surface under a no-tillage system. However, surface application of lime should only be recommended for soil with pH (CaCl2) lower than 5.6 or base saturation inferior to 65%, in the 0-5 cm layer.

O experimento foi desenvolvido em casa de vegetação do Departamento de Ciência do Solo da Universidade Federal de Lavras, Lavras (MG), no período de agosto de 1995 a junho de 1996. Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da aplicação de calcário em algumas propriedades químicas e na nutrição e produção do feijoeiro cultivado em amostras de quatro solos de várzea e comparar as doses estabelecidas como adequadas com as indicadas pelos métodos da saturação por bases e do Al e Ca + Mg. Utilizou-se um fatorial 6 x 4 em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições, constando de seis níveis de saturação por bases (V%): saturação natural, 40, 60, 80, 100 e 120% e quatro solos: Aluvial, Glei Pouco Húmico, Glei Húmico e Orgânico. Após dois cultivos sucessivos, os resultados mostraram que, nos solos de várzea estudados em casa de vegetação, os níveis de saturação por bases e de pH em água para atingir 90% da produção máxima do feijoeiro variaram de 44 a 52% e de 5,1 a 5,3, respectivamente, valores abaixo dos indicados para a cultura em solos das partes mais elevadas. As doses de calcário necessárias para elevar o V e o pH aos valores estabelecidos aproximaram-se das indicadas pelo método da saturação por bases para V2 igual a 70%; o método do Al e Ca + Mg subestimou essas doses. A calagem foi importante para fornecer Ca e Mg e para neutralizar a toxidez de Al e Mn. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions at the Soil Science Department of the Federal University of Lavras, Lavras, from August 1995 to June 1996. The objectives were to evaluate the application of limestone on several chemical properties and on the nutrition and production of common bean cultivated in samples of four lowland soils and to compare the doses established as appropriate according to base saturation and Al and Ca + Mg methods. A 6x4 factorial scheme in a completely randomized design with four replications was utilized, involving six levels of base saturation (V): natural condition, 40, 60, 80, 100 and 120% and four soils: Alluvial, Low Humic Gley, Humic Gley and Bog. After two successive cultivations, the data showed that, in the studied soils at greenhouse conditions, the levels of base saturation and pH in water for reaching 90% of maximum production of common bean ranged from 44 to 52% and from 5.1 to 5.3, respectively, values which are lower than those indicated for this crop in highland soils. The limestone doses needed to increase the V and pH values to levels established were close to those indicated by the base saturation method for V = 70%; the Al and Ca + Mg method underestimated these doses. Liming is important to furnish Ca and Mg and in the neutralization of Al and Mn toxicity.

The study was conducted on 18 locations and 11 dominant soil types in the Republic of Croatia including their evolution-genetic horizons. In total, 51 soil samples were examined. Analysis of soil was done by saturating patterns using barium chloride solution in three replications. Descriptive statistics of the analyzed data was conducted. Basic statistical parameters were calculated, and functional dependence between the base saturation (V%) of analyzed soil samples and their pH was observed. The correlation coefficient (r) between base saturation (V%) and pH for all examined soils was r=0.79 (n=51 ; very strong correlation). For acid soils it was r=0.82 (n=17 ; very strong correlation), for neutral soils r=0.75 (n=8 ; very strong correlation), and finally for alkaline soils r=0.15 (n=26 ; very weak correlation). Cation exchange capacity values ranged from 2.39 cmol+*kg-1 to 33.8 cmol+*kg-1 depending on soil type, pH, organic content and other soil parameters. Os experimentos foram realizados por três anos agrícolas em Latossolo Vermelho distrófico, em área de pastagem de Urochloa decumbens, com cultivo de milho em sucessão com aveia preta e triticale. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi os blocos casualizados em parcelas sub-subdivididas, com quatro repetições. Foram realizadas análises químicas (pH, Ca, Mg, H+Al e saturação por bases) do solo coletado nas camadas de 0-5 cm, 5-10 cm, 10-20 cm e 20-40 cm aos 12, 24 e 36 meses após a implantação dos experimentos. Os resultados evidenciaram alterações nas propriedades químicas do solo, com aumento significativo do pH, Ca e Mg trocáveis, saturação por bases e redução da acidez potencial até 10 cm de profundidade no SPD, com diferenças significativas em relação ao SCC. Nas profundidades de 10-20 cm e 20-40 cm, houve inversão, e os efeitos na neutralização da acidez do solo foram mais pronunciados no SCC que no SPD. A utilização de calcário com PRNT de 95% proporcionou melhor neutralização da acidez do solo até 10 cm de profundidade. A aplicação em superfície do corretivo da acidez antes da implantação do SPD não foi suficiente para elevar a saturação por bases em nível almejado para a cultura do milho. The use of limestone in no-tillage system usually causes great problems in soil management. The objective of this work was to evaluate the changes in the chemical properties of the soil under no-tillage (NTS) and conventional tillage system (CTS) due to granulometric fraction [Effective Calcium Carbonate (ECC) = 95% and 56%] and three rates (95% ECC = 1.2, 2.4 and 3.6 t ha-1 and 56% ECC = 2, 4 and 6 t ha-1) of dolomite lime applied in surface two months prior to system implantation. The experiment was carried out in a split-plot design with four replications in a dystrophic Red Latosol (Oxisol) during three years, in area of pasture of Urochloa decumbens using a succession of corn and black oat. The soil chemical characteristics (pH, Ca, Mg, H+Al and base saturation) were analyzed in 12, 24 and 36 months before each sowing in the depths 0-5 cm, 5-10 cm, 10-20 cm and 20-40 cm. The results evidenced alterations in soil chemical properties with pH increase, exchangeable calcium and magnesium, base saturation, and reduction of potential acidity up to 10 cm of depth in NTS, with significant differences in relation to CTS. In the depths of 10-20 cm and 20-40 cm, there was an inversion, and the effects in the neutralization of soil acidity were more pronounced in the CTS than the NTS. The application of lime with 95% ECC showed better neutralization of soil acidity up to 10 cm of depth. The use of lime with 95% ECC provided better neutralization of the acidity of the soil up to 10 cm of depth. The corrective application in surface before the implantation of SPD was enough to elevate the base saturation for levels adapted for the corn yield. A aplicação de calcário, na superfície do solo, é necessária em algumas situações agrícolas. O objetivo desse trabalho foi verificar alterações em atributos químicos de um solo de textura média, em razão da aplicação de calcário na superfície ou incorporado. O experimento foi conduzido em condições de laboratório, em colunas de PVC, delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 2 x 4 e uma testemunha, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram na combinação de duas doses de calcário (4 e 2 t ha-1) e 4 formas de aplicação do corretivo (aplicado na superfície, sem incorporação, e calcário incorporado nas profundidades de 0 a 5; 0 a 10 e 0 a 20 cm), além da testemunha em que não foi feita a calagem. Após 326 dias de incubação do solo com o calcário, houve efeito corretivo do calcário até 5 ou 10 cm abaixo da profundidade em que foi feita a sua aplicação ou incorporação. A aplicação de calcário, na superfície, resultou em aumento da saturação por bases do solo até 10 cm de profundidade, e até 40 cm de profundidade, quando o calcário foi incorporado nas camadas de 0 a 5, 0 a 10 ou 0 a 20 cm de profundidade. The application of lime on the soil surface is necessary in some agricultural situations. The objective of this work was to verify changes in chemical attributes of a medium texture soil as a result of lime application with and without amending. The experiment was carried out in a laboratory setting, in PVC columns, in a completely randomized design, with a 2 x 4 factorial design and a control, with four replicates, totaling 36 columns. The treatments were the combination of two lime rates (4 and 2 t ha-1) and four types of lime application (on surface without amending, and amending in layers of 0 to 5; 0 to 10 and 0 to 20 cm depths), in addition to the control, to which lime was not applied. After 326 days of soil incubation with lime, there was a corrective effect from the lime until 5 cm or 10 cm below the depth in which there was the application or amending. The application of lime resulted in increases of soil base saturation until 10 cm of depth, and until 40 cm of depth when the lime was amended in the layers of 0 to 5, 0 to 10 or 0 to 20 cm depth.

Apesar das diferenças químicas entre as faixas de adubação e entrelinhas de pomares de laranjeiras, o critério para a calagem superficial entre esses dois locais ainda é desconhecido. O objetivo deste estudo foi quantificar as alterações químicas temporais nas faixas de adubação e entrelinhas, nutrição e produção de laranja "Pêra" após calagens superficiais, em um Argissolo Vermelho distrófico latossólico, no noroeste do Paraná. Quatro calagens superficiais foram realizadas entre 1996 e 1999 para elevar a saturação por bases a 70 %, a partir da primeira colheita de frutos de laranja. Os calcários dolomítico e calcítico foram distribuídos sobre seis sistemas de manejo de plantas de cobertura permanente nas entrelinhas e nas faixas de adubação, as quais foram manejadas com roçadas mecânicas e herbicida pós-emergente, respectivamente. No período de 1996 a 2004 foram coletadas amostras de tecido foliar e do solo nas profundidades de 0-20 e 20-40 cm e avaliou-se a produção de laranja. As máximas alterações químicas na camada de 0-20 cm de profundidade e no tecido foliar das laranjeiras (Ca) ocorreram quatro anos após sucessivas calagens superficiais anuais. A produção de laranja correlacionou-se negativamente com Al3+ e positivamente com pH-CaCl2, Ca2+ e Mg2+ das faixas de adubação e do centro das entrelinhas. As calagens superficiais elevaram a saturação por bases na camada de 0-20 cm de profundidade até 46 % nas faixas de adubação e 64 % nas entrelinhas. Despite the chemical differences in soils under the fertilizer bands and inter-rows in orange orchards, no criterion to determine the need of liming in the two areas is yet known. The objective of this study was to quantify the temporary chemical alterations in fertilizer bands and inter-rows of a "Pêra" orange orchard as well as nutrition and fruit yield after surface liming, in a Typic Paleudults, in northwestern Paraná, Brazil. The soil surface was limed four times between 1996 and 1999 to reach a base saturation of 70 % since the first fruit harvest. Dolomitic and calcitic limestone were broadcast over six permanent groundcover plant types in the inter-rows and fertilization bands, which were mowed and sprayed with post-emergence herbicide. From 1996 to 2004 leaf samples, and soil samples in the layers 0-20 and 20-40 cm were collected and the orange yield was evaluated. Maximal alterations of soil chemical characteristics and leaf nutrient concentrations (Ca) were observed after the fourth successive annual surface liming. The orange yield was negatively correlated with Al3+ and positively correlated with soil pH (CaCl2), Ca2+ and Mg2+ in the fertilizer bands and inter-rows. Surface liming increased base saturation in the 0-20 cm layer to 46 % in the fertilizer bands and to 64 % inter-rows.

Com vistas a isso, foi instalado na EECB (Bebedouro-SP), em um Latossolo Vermelho distrófico típico, um experimento com a aplicação de cinco doses de calcário calcinado, em julho/99. Os efeitos no solo foram avaliados através de amostragens nas camadas de 0-10; 10-20; 20-40 e 40-60 cm, aos 6; 12; 18; 24; 30 e 36 meses. Através da utilização de modelos lineares, constatou-se que os efeitos da aplicação superficial de calcário no solo podem atingir até a camada de 20-40 cm, sendo a saturação por bases uma ótima característica indicadora da ação do corretivo. A máxima reação do calcário ocorreu entre 12 e 18 meses após a aplicação. O estado nutricional das plantas e a produção foram alterados, significativamente em função da aplicação superficial de calcário, sendo que melhores respostas da planta foram obtidas com saturação por bases de aproximadamente 50%. The state of São Paulo has the largest citriculture of the world, managements are of extreme importance and seek to increase and improve the production. Because of that, an experiment with application of five limestone rates was installed in EECB (Bebedouro, SP, Brazil), in a Hapluxtox (Red Latossol), in July/99. The effects of the limestone, after its application were evaluated through soil testing, in the layers 0-10, 10-20, 20-40 and 40-60 cm, at the 6, 12, 18, 24, 30 and 36 months. Linear models demonstrated that the effects of surface liming in soil could reach up 20-40cm. It is known that soil base saturation is a great property of liming action, although it is necessary to use more soil parameters to evaluate its effects. In soils with base saturation >50% the limestone application can be reduce. The maximum reaction of limestone happened between the 12 and 18 months after its application, but in areas with perennial cultures the relative studies to the effects of the liming should be longer. As alterações químicas do solo após a calagem superficial variam de acordo com o tempo e precipitações pluviais. Com o objetivo de avaliar as alterações das características químicas de um Latossolo Vermelho distrófico textura média de camada superficial arenosa, foi instalado um experimento em blocos ao acaso, com quatro doses de calcário dolomítico (0; 2,4; 4,8 e 7,2 t ha-1) e três repetições, em 1999, no município de Alto Paraná, região noroeste do Paraná. O calcário foi distribuído sobre resíduos de Brachiaria decumbens nas entrelinhas de um pomar de laranja em formação. As parcelas experimentais foram constituídas de 310 m², compostas por 15 plantas em três linhas com cinco plantas cada. As amostras de solo foram coletadas nas entrelinhas das três plantas centrais da parcela nas camadas de 0-0,05, 0,05-0,10, 0,10-0,20, 0,20-0,40 e 0,40-0,60 m de profundidade, aos 4, 12, 18, 24, 31 e 37 meses após a distribuição do calcário, correspondendo alternadamente às épocas de amostragens de solo em períodos de alta e baixa precipitação pluvial. As análises de variância foram efetuadas por meio do modelo matemático de blocos ao acaso no esquema de parcela subsubdividida com medidas repetidas no tempo (ano, época do ano em função da precipitação pluvial e doses de calcário), utilizadas nas análises de regressões pela técnica dos polinômios ortogonais. Os resultados mostraram que a máxima alteração das características químicas do solo foi obtida a partir de doses de calcário superiores ao dobro da necessidade de calcário, convencionalmente determinada pelo método de saturação por bases para elevá-la a 70 %, na profundidade de 0,20 m. A amostragem de solo após o período de maior precipitação pluvial foi indispensável ao ajuste dos dados da saturação por bases na camada de 0-0,05 m. As alterações dos teores de Ca2+ limitaram-se à camada de 0-0,10 m, enquanto os teores de Mg2+ aumentaram progressivamente do primeiro ao terceiro ano a 0-0,60 m de profundidade. Os teores de Mg2+ mantiveram-se associados à correção da acidez do solo (pH e H + Al) e à elevação dos valores de saturação por bases na profundidade de 0,10-0,20 m, na qual foi constatada a menor relação de Ca2+/Mg2+ (1,06). A máxima resposta da calagem superficial ocorreu no terceiro ano da aplicação da calagem superficial e na camada de 0-0,10 m identificada pelos modelos de regressão quadrática, momento em que se identificou o estabelecimento de uma frente de alcalinização na camada de 0,10-0,20 m por meio dos modelos de regressão linear. O método empregado de parcelas subsubdivididas no tempo permitiu a descrição da dinâmica da calagem no perfil do solo. Alterations in soil chemical properties after liming depend on the frequency of soil sampling and rainfall. This study evaluated such alterations in a Typic Haplorthox (Rhodic Ferralsol) with a sandy-loam superficial layer. The experiment had a completely randomized block design, with four dolomitic lime rates (0, 2.4, 4.8, and 7.2 t ha-1) and three replicates. The experiment was carried out in Alto Parana in northwestern Parana state (southern Brazil). Lime was broadcast on the soil surface over Brachiaria decumbens grass residues in-between rows of a young orange plantation. The experimental plots consisted of an area of 310 m² with 15 orange plants each (3 rows and 5 plants per row). Soil samples were collected in-between the rows of 3 central orange plants at depths of 0-0.05; 0.05-0.10; 0.10-0.20; 0.20-0.40; and 0.40-0.60 meter at 4, 12, 18, 24, 31, and 37 months after liming. This sampling times corresponded to alternated rainy and dry seasons of the region. The analysis of variance was performed based on a complete randomized block design in a split-split-plot scheme with repeated measures over time (years, rainfall season and lime rates), which were used in the regression analyses through orthogonal polynomial models. Results showed that maximum alterations in the soil chemical properties were obtained with lime rates twice as high as those calculated to raise the soil base saturation to 70% at a depth of 0.20 m. Soil sampling after the high rainfall period proved important to adjust the base saturation data in the 0 - 0.05 m layer. Ca concentration only varied in the 0-0.10 m layer, while those of Mg varied progressively from the first to the third year in the 0-0.60 m layer. Mg concentrations were associated to the soil acidity correction (pH and H + Al) and to the increment of the base saturation values in the 0.10-0.20 m layer, where it was found the lowest Ca/Mg ratio (1.06). The most pronounced response to surface liming was observed in the third year after surface liming (0-0.10 m deep) identified by quadratic regression models. At the same time linear regression models identified the establishment of a alkalinization front in the 0.10-0.20 m soil layer. The methodology of split-split-plot design with repeated measures over time allowed the description of the superficial lime dynamics along the time.

Este trabalho objetivou avaliar diferentes níveis de saturação por bases, utilizando, como corretivo do solo, a escória de siderurgia, comparando-a com calcário calcítico, nas alterações de alguns atributos químicos do solo, bem como na resposta da soqueira da cana-de-açúcar. Para isto, realizou-se um experimento com a variedade SP 80-1842, durante o terceiro e o quarto corte, nos anos agrícolas 2000/01 e 2001/02. Os tratamentos, dispostos em blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial com quatro repetições, constaram de duas fontes de corretivos, calcário calcítico e escória de siderurgia, e quatro níveis de correção, estimados pelo método da saturação por bases (V %): testemunha (sem correção) e com correção para V % de 50; 75 e 100, tendo sido tais corretivos aplicados na época do plantio da cana-de-açúcar. O calcário calcítico e a escória de siderurgia promoveram efeito residual benéfico, após 48 meses da aplicação, na correção da acidez do solo e na elevação do valor da saturação por bases; a maior dose de calcário causou efeito depressivo no perfilhamento, no número de colmos industrializáveis e na produção da cana-de-açúcar, fato não observado com uso da escória de siderurgia; a aplicação da escória de siderurgia e do calcário, em pré-plantio, promoveu efeito residual positivo na produção da soqueira de cana-de-açúcar. Calcium silicate slag, as a soil acidity corrective material with long-lasting residual effects, can benefit long-cycle cultures like sugar cane, thus minimizing production drops during the productive cycle. This study evaluated different base saturation levels, comparing calcitic limestone to basic slag as a soil corrective agent, in relation to alterations of some chemical soil properties, as well as to the response of sugar cane rattoon. Sugar cane of the SP 80-1842 type, during the third and fourth cut in the agricultural years 2000/01 and 2001/02, was used for the experiment. The treatments, arranged in randomized blocks with four replications, consisted in the application of two corrective agents: calcitic limestone and basic slag, evaluated by the base saturation method, with four correction levels (V %): control (without correction), correction for V % to 50; 75; and 100, applied at planting. After 48 months, both calcitic limestone and basic slag had generated a beneficial residual effect in the correction of soil acidity and the increase of base saturation. The highest limestone rate caused a restrictive effect on the sprouts, the number of industrially usable culms and on the sugar cane yield, while under the use of basic slag, this fact was not observed. The application of basic slag and limestone in pre-planting caused a positive residual effect on the yield of sugar cane rattoon. Em solo Podzólico Vermelho-Amarelo, foi instalado, no ano agrícola de 1981/82, um ensaio de rotação de culturas envolvendo milho, soja, mucuna-preta e girassol. Doze parcelas foram plantadas com girassol: algumas apresentaram germinação baixa, parte aérea pouco desenvolvida e com clorose generalizada nas folhas; sistema radicular com raiz pivotante encurvada e ramificações secundárias pouco abundantes e grossas. As produções variaram conforme a intensidade desses sintomas. Com os resultados da análise de solo de cada parcela, obtiveram-se relações lineares entre produção de grãos de girassol e pH (r = 0,95) e saturação em bases do solo (r = 0,92). Obtiveram-se ainda outras relações, também lineares, entre altura de plantas, diâmetro dos capítulos e os índices de acidez do solo. Os resultados mostraram que o girassol também foi sensível à acidez do solo e que o critério do alumínio trocável, para a recomendação de calagem, não foi o mais adequado para esta planta. A crop rotation experiment involving corn, soybean, sunflower, and green manure was carried out in a Red-Yellow Podzolic soil. In some of the 12 plots with sunflower the seed germination was poor and the plants showed reduced growth, with leaf chlorosis, curved main roots, and fewer and thicker secondary roots. Yield was negatively correlated with the intensity of these symptoms. The grain yield was highly correlated with soil pH (r = 0.95) and soil base saturation (r = 0.92). Plant height and head diameter also showed linear relationship with those soil indices. The results obtained show that sunflower is very sensitive to soil acidity, and that the exchangeable aluminum criterion is inadequate for determining lime requirement for sunflower.
