Aims: The inhomogeneity of bare rock distribution and the diversity of underground rock structure in different soil-rock microsites resulted in high soil heterogeneity. The aim of this study was to investigate the responses of soil nutrients and stoichiometry to soil-rock microsites and evaluate the relationship between soil substrate and SOC stability Methods: Six soil-rock microsite types were selected in a karst area of Southwest China, including rocky soil surface (RSS), stone crevice (SC), stone gully (SG), stone cave (SCA), stone pit (SP) and soil surface (SS). Soil samples were collected from 0–10, 10–20 and 20–30 cm depths, and three carbon fractions were isolated by combining flotation and screening. Results: The stocks of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) in the soil profile among different soil-rock microsites were in the order of SS > RSS > SG > SC > SCA > SP. SCA and SS contained the highest and lowest values of C, N, P and S densities, respectively. The N, P and S were positively correlated with LF/SOC and negatively with MF/SOC, stoichiometric ratios were also negatively with MF/SOC. Moreover, the saturation moisture content, capillary moisture capacity, and saturated hydraulic conductivity are important indicators that affect the SOC stability. Conclusions: These results imply that soil-rock microsites regulate the stability of SOC by affecting the heterogeneity of soil nutrients and water, and the retention of soil water modulates the effects of soil nutrients and stoichiometry on the stability of SOC in karst areas. The composition of forest soil organic matter is an important part of the global carbon cycle, which is effective by temperature and moisture. As we all know, the temperature and moisture in the low-latitude plateau regions are very sensitive to changes in latitude and altitude. However, the composition of soil organic matter response to changes in latitude and altitude in the low-latitude plateau regions is unknown. In this study, the effects of latitude (21–29° N) and altitude (500–4000 m) on soil organic carbon (SOC) and humic acid carbon (HAC), fulvic acid carbon (FAC), and humin carbon (HMC) in forest surface soil (0–10 cm) were investigated. The results showed that the contents of soil organic carbon and humus increased with the increase in altitude and latitude. The effect of altitude on the composition of organic matter was significant only at 23° N to 25° N. The composition of organic matter is not only regulated by mean annual temperature (MAT) and soil moisture content (SMC) but also affected by soil pH, carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N), and powder. The soil surface layer (0–10 cm) carbon sequestration capacity in high-latitude and high-altitude areas is stronger than that in low-latitude and low-altitude areas. As a consequence, in today's response to global climate change, the high carbon sequestration capacity of high latitude and high altitude areas should be given attention and protection. Surface soil water shortages are among the primary factors limiting revegetation in most degraded regions with shallow soil, especially in karst areas. Finding water sources for plants is an urgent task to ensure maximum vegetation restoration in these areas. We combined soil water content monitoring and isotope tracing to reveal the principal water source supply systems for plants in karst areas. The results showed that the content and storage of water in the shallow fissure soil system (SFSS) of the epikarst zone were consistently higher and more temporally stable than that of the surface soil. Thus, epikarsts with dissolution voids and fissures are important, stable aquifers that provide water to plants. Moreover, the IsoSource results showed that the SFSS was the primary water source for three monitored tree species (Cupressus torulosa D. Don, Pyracantha fortuneana [Maxim.] Li and Rosa cymosa Tratt.), especially C. torulosa and P. fortuneana. The water‐uptake patterns of C. torulosa and P. fortuneana changed from dominant SFSS and surface soil water sources during the rainy period to the dominant SFSS and transfer zone (TZ) of vadose zone water sources during the dry period. In contrast, Rhynchospora cymosa uses water from SFSS and TZ water sources only during drought. These results suggest that the SFSS is key to eliminating vegetation restoration limitations due to surface drought in karst areas. It is proposed that deeply rooted plants with dimorphic root systems are optimal for sustainable vegetation restoration in karst areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As global warming intensifies, frequent extreme rainfall events cause severe soil erosion. ​However, the impact of extreme rainfall on erosion on karst slopes and its hydrodynamic mechanisms are still poorly understood. This study aims to examine how extreme rainfall events and slope gradient affect soil erosion on karst slopes and its underlying dynamic mechanisms. Simulation experiments were performed in a steel tank that mimicked the dual hydrological structure of a karst slope, using various rainfall intensities (50, 105, 115, 125, and 145 mm·h−1) and slope gradients (5°, 15°, and 25°). The results show that in the event of extreme rainfall (105 – 145 mm·h−1), there was a substantial increase in the surface runoff coefficient, rising from 48.85 % to 89.79 %, representing an 83.81 % increase. Surface erosion was found to be the predominant factor on the slope, contributing to 98.74 % to 99.98 % of the overall sediment output, while underground sediment coefficient ranged from only 0.02 % to 1.26 % under same conditions. The unit stream power emerged as the most suitable hydrodynamic parameter for characterizing surface sediment yield (SS), with a critical threshold of unit water flow power for surface erosion identified at 0.006 m·s−1. Constructing a surface erosion model (R2 = 0.969) based on runoff velocity, rain intensity, and slope yields higher accuracy than the model (R2 = 0.966) based solely on runoff modulus, rain intensity, and slope. For the most precise predictions, it is recommended to combine runoff modulus and velocity with rainfall intensity and slope when constructing the surface erosion prediction model(R2 > 0.999). This study enhances understanding of extreme rainfall's effect on soil erosion in karst slopes and backs the creation of prediction models for such events.
