Based on a W–E transect through the northern loess regions of Austria, palaeoenvironmental studies were carried out in three loess–palaeosol sequences (Gunderding, Krems-Wachtberg and Stillfried B locus typicus) to complement available results in the context of a multi-methodological approach. On the base of previously published datings, our study concentrates on the MIS 3/2 transition. The results of detailed micromorphological investigations prove that palaeopedogenesis, frost processes, and sedimentation rates differ in their spatial occurrence in the loess belt of Austria. All three sequences are in line with the general trend of a reduced intensity of pedogenic and cryogenic features from western to (south-)eastern Europe, which can be explained by lower Atlantic moisture influence towards the east. Interstadial cambic horizons are well developed in the MIS 3 sequence of western Austria, whereas the eastern loess profiles only show weak pedogenesis. In all studied sequences frost processes were active during the upper MIS 3 and MIS 2. The studied MIS 2 records are characterised by tundra soils with reductaquic horizons, which is a clear sign for prolonged phases of permafrost. On the spatial scale, the sedimentation rate increases in the eastern loess regions and particularly the Krems-Wachtberg sequence in the centre of the transect experienced an exceptionally high sedimentation rate and can thus be seen as one of the most important high resolution records for the MIS 3/2 transition in European loess regions. Abstract: The correlation of sedimentary and pedogenetic processes in Lower Austria is difficult due to significant discontinuities and local variability in soil formation. This hampers landscape reconstruction at a regional scale. However, at a local scale distinct landscape formation processes represented by a shift from fluvial to aeolian deposition can be observed in the brickyard of Langenlois, Lower Austria. Sedimentological and mineralogical analyses in combination with palaeontological finds suggest that the fluvial deposition took place during the Middle Pleistocene. This attribution is confirmed by infra-red stimulated luminescence (IRSL) dating, which gives a minimum age of 300ka for the palaeosurface on which the fluvial sediments were deposited. This is consistent with a small faunal assemblage including Stephanorhinus sp., Dama sp. and an alcine cervid. Such a fauna is previously unknown in Austria; it indicates a Middle Pleistocene interglacial period. The low degree of weathering as well as Cryosols found in the loess sequence point to loess accumulation during the Last Glacial; the dating results (35–55ka) indicate prolonged loess deposition. No signs of pedogenesis could be found; this is surprising because in other areas this period is known for weak soil development. The lack of soil formation seems to be specific to the western part of Lower Austria, as is the complete erosion of the last glacial maximum (LGM) loess, which can not be found at Langenlois. Abstract: In low mountain areas of central Europe, Pleistocene periglacial conditions and relevant processes have led to the formation of cover beds. In general, Holocene soils are not developed in bedrock, but they have formed in periglacial cover beds. Their occurrence and characteristics control the spatial distribution of soils, and thus periglacial sediments are a useful tool for soil mapping and soil survey. The concept of periglacial cover beds distinguishes four main layers: topmost, upper, middle and basal periglacial cover bed. The upper and middle layers contain loess, whereas the basal one consists entirely of bedrock. The loess content causes an increase of site-specific soil ecological quality in comparison to soils formed directly on bedrock. The occurrence and characteristics of the cover beds is reviewed, summarizing the present state-of-the-art. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• The loess-paleosol section (MIS 5e to MIS 3) on the Russian Upland was studied. • OSL and 14C-dates were obtained for paleosols, sediments, and cryogenic deformations. • For MIS 5e interglacial the duration of pedogenesis was estimated from 12 to 15 ka. • Stages of periglacial conditions during the early, middle and late Valdai were dated. • The obtained chrono-stratigraphic scheme was correlated with other ones in Europe. New results on stratigraphy and chronology, obtained on the basis of OSL and 14C-dating of paleosols, sediments, and cryogenic deformations in the Aleksandrov quarry situated at the Central Russian Upland, are discussed. Due to the location of the site in a paleodepression, the section presents various stages of soil formation, cryogenesis and sedimentation starting from the Mikulino interglacial to the middle last glacial time. The studied sequence is well preserved and one of the most detailed soil-sedimentary terrestrial archives within Eastern Europe. It reflects climatic variations comprising the timespan from the marine isotopic stage (MIS) 5e to MIS 3. At the base of the paleodepression the pedogenetic stages are extraordinary detailed. Distinct paleosols are alternating with erosion-accumulative stages, forming the Ryshkovo pedolitocomplex during the Mikulino interglacial. During the Early Valdai time two interstadial paleosols were developed, and the Middle Valdai section comprises two main interstadial paleosols as well. In general, interstadial paleosols of the Late Valdai time are absent in the studied quarry. For the first time, the chronological boundaries of the MIS 5e interglacial are recorded and thus, the duration of soil formation could be determined from 12 to 15 thousand years. Furthermore, stages of periglacial conditions during the Early, Middle and Late Valdai time were dated. The obtained ages form the base for a chronostratigraphic framework, which was correlated with those of the loess-paleosol archives of Eastern, Central, and Western Europe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The basal tills of the Late Moscow (MIS 6) Cryochrone form an important component of landscapes in northern Europe, including the center of the Russian Plain. The till is often covered only with a thin cover layer (30–50 cm as an average) – veneers of sands, sandy loams or silty loams, so that surface soils (Retisols) are formed in the bipartite sediments. The study of such soils allows identifying a set of pre-depositional, syn-depositional and post-depositional (pedogenic and cryogenic) features. An assemblage of (macro, meso and micro) morphological features together with analytical data confirmed that soils had been formed within several climatic cycles starting from the Late Moscow time till now, including the last Thermochrone, when the well-developed Argic horizon had been formed. Modern pedogenesis forms embedded profiles within the cover layer depending on the bioclimatic parameters (with Humic, Protospodic or Cambic horizons). The clear record of the final stages of sedimentation and ancient pedogenesis within profiles of soils in bipartite sediments may help to derive paleoclimatic interpretations from the last interglacial - glacial cycle till present. Correlation of these records with other archives in glacial and periglacial areas opens attractive research perspectives. Highlights • The mantle of the bipartite sediments that retain their initial features confirm that the topography of the moraine plains was only locally influenced by surface erosion and keeps record of depositional episodes since Moscow Cryochrone. • A set of pre-depositional, syn-depositional and post depositional features have been identified in bipartite sediments within the Moscow glacial limits. • The bipartite sediments are influenced by pedogenesis since late Moscow time and form an important paleogeographic archive with palimpsest soil memory. Local to regional paleoenvironmental reactions to past climate changes are preserved in loess-paleosol sequences (LPS). In order to extract this information we used a multi-methodological approach in the Upper Paleolithic site of Krems-Wachtberg East in Lower Austria. Detailed field studies and high-resolution geochemical, colorimetric, and granulometric analyses help to understand the interplay between soil formation, loess accumulation, and surface processes. In comparison to the main profile/excavation of Krems-Wachtberg 2005–2015 it can be stated that OSL- and 14 C-ages as well as the (archeological) stratigraphy of both profiles are comparable. However, pedogenic features are more evident at Krems-Wachtberg East. The new investigations show that well-established weathering indices do not clearly trace interstadial soil formation in the studied profile. Apart from this fact, single specific elements like Fe and Mg react more sensitive to initial pedogenic processes. Weak pedogenesis can further be evidenced by quantitative spectrophotometric results. The latter is also capable of refining and supporting the stratigraphy/pedology based on field analyses. As a general rule, next to loess also initial soil horizons of the MIS 3 are remarkably rich in primary carbonates indicating that soil formation took place in an alkaline environment. Due to the fact that hydrolysis of feldspars could not clearly be detected by the application of pedochemical indices, soil formation was probably limited to the oxidation of iron bearing minerals and weak carbonate leaching. These phases of favorable climatic conditions in terms of pedogenesis were terminated by increasing dust input towards the onset of MIS 2. The eolian deposits are overprinted during reducing conditions in soils and/or modified by colluvial processes. Altogether, weak pedogenesis can be reliably detected using a multi-methodological approach which leads to enhanced paleoenvironmental interpretations. The OSL-ages put the profile in a range of ∼41 to 30 ka. We present a tentative correlation of the studied loess profile to the record of the North Greenland Ice Core Project (NGRIP) for the part of the profile where OSL and 14 C complement each other.
