PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to posit that coding should be considered as a critical part of new literacies. Teacher educators should first adopt the new literacies perspective, and then prepare pre-service teachers to teach both traditional literacy and new literacies skills, especially preparing them how to weave coding into K-5 literacy curricula to cultivate younger learners’ new ways of expressions and computational thinking skills. To facilitate this educational transformation, low-cost Web 2.0 tools and apps were introduced as one practical approach, along with some literacy lesson ideas to help teacher educators and pre-service teachers begin to integrate coding into the K-5 literacy curricula.Design/methodology/approachThis paper is a viewpoint paper.FindingsA table of low-cost Web 2.0 tools was presented with sample lesson ideas.Originality/valueMore than ever, coding breaks the traditional definition of literacy as paper-based reading and writing. It empowers students to read, write and create with multimodality on multiple platforms. Weaving coding into the literacy curricula offers the window to promote both computational thinking and new literacies skills. Teacher educators, among all other stakeholders, should begin the efforts to prepare pre-service teachers to weave coding into the literacy curricula and other content areas in the teacher educations programs now.

Pontianak Malay’s society is not only limited to the Malay ethnic group who lives near the Kapuas River, but they also have a tradition that is created from the habit and Islamic learning. This paper is initiated by the study that has been conducted by the researchers in 2016 implementing qualitative descriptive method. The data collection tools consist of observation, documentation and interview. The reason for choosing this method is to discover and reveal the meaning or the ideology of the symbols contained in the corak insang weave. Based on the results of this study, it is concluded as the first conclusion that the process to make corak insang weave needs sufficient time about one week. Corak insang weave can be formed in the manufacture of other woven fabrics, through the patches weave method, songket and bundle weave. The second conclusion shows that it is unfounded that a lot of physical evidence and historical documents or from sources are related to the meanings contained in Pontianak corak insang weave motive.

Every individual occupies a specific position in the weave of a social fabric and class, caste and community form its main threads. Gender intersects all these sub-systems of organisation and exploitation. This chapter deals with the larger social, economic and political context of violence and many ways in which they manifest in counselling sessions. It presents three independent case studies as examples to illustrate how class, caste, religion and gender intersect in the representation of the woman’s story, as it unfolds. The chapter also discusses the impact of heightening violence on the family and domestic dynamics and how counsellors may address these issues. The preventive and corrective measures on the issue of domestic violence have reached this stage because some women took the initiative to speak out against it.

This article asks: How do formerly incarcerated people navigate digital technologies? Using the metaphor of a spider web, I use 18 months of ethnographic observations of formerly incarcerated women of color to argue that formerly incarcerated people must contend with what I call— Carceral Web—the spatial intersection between carceral institutions and digital technologies. I identify two primary features of the Carceral Web: stickiness and entanglements. I characterize stickiness as the Internet’s ability to make carceral histories inescapable across time and physical space, making it impossible for formerly incarcerated people to shed their criminal histories. I characterize entanglements as the intersections of institutional carceral relationships that result from practices and norms of digital connectivity. I argue that the pervasive significance of digital connectivity to everyday life compels formerly incarcerated people to contend with the Carceral Web, but stickiness and entanglements make them susceptible to exploitation and reincarceration. I call the Carceral Web’s production of vulnerable subjects predation, which I characterize as a type of hidden sentence. I contend that despite having limited resources to navigate predation, formerly incarcerated people are tasked with co-opting the Carceral Web to build solidarity and training as a self-defense survival mechanism. Understanding the Spider of the Carceral Web as the convergence of corporations and state interests allows us to see how it feeds on the lives of formerly incarcerated people by consuming their marginalization and exclusion in the interests of racialized and gendered profit.

A metáfora da construção narrativa como o tecer de fios, geralmente tomada em perspectiva que se pretende poética, pode ser uma armadilha conceitual e metodológica quando estamos diante da produção de textualidades sobre acontecimentos que envolvem violências físicas e simbólicas, a exemplo daqueles identificados com a homofobia, agressão e mortes de mulheres. Nosso objetivo é propor, como alternativa, pensar em narrativas comunicacionais e jornalísticas que lidam com acontecimentos que envolvem temáticas sociais controversas a partir da metáfora dos fios de alta tensão desencapados. Metodologicamente, nos guiamos por revisões bibliográficas e por referências a pesquisas por nós realizadas que lidam com violências diversas. Consideramos que a nova metáfora é mais potente, pois permite melhor visualizar as condições sociais de ocorrência da homofobia e das agressões contra mulheres., The metaphor of narrative construction as wire weaving, usually taken in a perspective that is purportedly poetic, can be a conceptual and methodological trap when we are faced with the production of textualities about events involving physical and symbolic violence, such as those identified with homophobia ,and aggressions and deaths of women. Our objective is to propose, as an alternative, to think of communicational and journalistic narratives that deal with events involving controversial social issues taking as reference the metaphor of uncoated high voltage electric wires. Methodologically, we guide us through literature reviews and references to research carried out by us, which deal with various forms of violence. We consider that the new metaphor is more powerful, since it allows better visualization of the social conditions of occurrence of homophobia and of aggressions against women.

This chapter uncovers a core debate in the governance of interdisciplinary academic careers around the question of when a university researcher should embrace interdisciplinarity. None of the interdisciplinary researchers whose views informed this study regretted taking this path at the outset of their academic career and they recommended this style of training to others. Yet there was disagreement among university leadership, which in turn reveals some fundamental misunderstandings about the nature of interdisciplinary knowledge, how this is acquired, and the skills that interdisciplinary researchers offer.

Most commentators regard Gogol's ‘Old World Landowners’ (‘Starosvetskie pomeshchiki’) as an idyll into which elements of the tragi-comic intrude, but there is an overwhelming consensus that the story's iconic opening passage, which describes the rural setting and introduces the protagonists, still presents a virtually unbroken idyll. The present article sets out to show that the anomalies critics have occasionally discerned already here are not sporadic but sustained and programmatic, forming the basis of a highly subtle, intricately woven and ultimately definitive narrative irony in which the narrator comes to be seen as a profoundly disturbed urban snob who is praising the sentimental rural visions that haunt him against his better judgement.

Two Indigenous frameworks were successfully applied to a significant collection of junior Māori language material at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Ngā Kete Kōrero Framework is used to assign levels to readers designed for structured literacy development and formed the basis of a new classification system. Ngā Ūpoko Tukutuku is an Indigenous subject headings schema developed to empower and enrich records using Māori knowledge systems and terminology. Library staff worked collaboratively with Māori language literacy experts to transform access to the material. The Indigenous frameworks, their application for reclassification and record enhancement, and associated benefits of the project are described.

This paper is based on the findings of a research study which traced 56 rural women learners 15 years after they had participated in an empowerment and education programme in North India. It attempts to understand, from the perspectives of women from marginalised communities, the ways in which participating in the programme had been empowering for them, or not. While most of the women were indeed able to transform several areas in their lives, this study illustrates that empowering outcomes cannot be assumed or articulated in categorical terms and that bringing about change requires the negotiation of power at various levels. The women’s narratives stand in contrast to the prevalent discourses around women’s literacy and empowerment, which highlight the importance of literacy only in terms of its positive impact on attaining development goals. Despite the vigorously discussed de-politicisation of the concept of empowerment, the authors show in this paper that empowerment, when informed by a critical feminist understanding, continues to provide a useful framework to analyse women’s experiences related to education, as a process enabling women to understand and negotiate structures of power – which are neither static nor wholly dominating – and to find spaces to exercise agency. There are few longitudinal studies which trace the long-term impact of educational programmes on adult women, and most studies are in the nature of impact assessments of programmes. Through this paper the authors argue for the need to analyse the complexities around the relationship between women’s education and empowerment.

Near the end of The Public and Its Problems, John Dewey writes that the consummation of democracy will involve the art of full communication. The internet might appear to fulfill Dewey's vision, increasing opportunities for inquiry, interaction, and renewal through the social construction of meaning. Yet certain forms of technologically mediated communication threaten the development of much needed skills for democracy. While citizenship education may be facilitated by digital technology, it also demands pedagogy of a more traditional sort, one characterized by embodied, experiential interactions between teachers and students. We employ pedagogical theory, democratic theory, evolutionary psychology, and neuroscience to underline the crucial importance of these embodied, experiential interactions and their relationship to the challenge of sustaining democracy in our times.

The Borderland organisation is based in rural north-eastern Poland, some five hours' drive from Warsaw. The organisation's mission is to harness the arts as a medium that addresses issues of cultural, national, and ethnic difference. It promotes multi-cultural education and understanding through a variety of proposals, including theatre, oral history collection, filmmaking, publishing, and conflict resolution strategies developed in response to the ethno-national animosity still very much alive in the contested region of Poland where it is located. The organisation's strategies have proven so successful that, with the support of organisations such as the EU and Ford Foundation, they have been exported to places such as the Caucuses, Bosnia and Aceh, Indonesia. Research on multiracial individuals has been an active and multidisciplinary area of study since the early 1990s, with significant psychological and sociological focuses on understanding the population’s racial and ethnic identities (Kich, 1992; Poston, 1990; Root, 1990). As the literature evolved, thus did inquiry into the developmental and social experiences of multiracial individuals in particular settings and stages of life. With the recognition that the college environment was a primary setting for the developmental task of figuring out who “I” am and identity exploration, higher education became a natural setting for investigation into how multiracial college students construct their racial and ethnic identities in relation to a myriad of factors including cultural background, language, racial makeup, college population and representation, and peer relations (DeBose & Winters, 2003; King, 2011; Miville, Constantine, Baysden, & So-Lloyd, 2005; Renn, 2004; Rockquemore & Brunsma, 2002; Root, 2001; Shih, Bonam, Sanchez, & Peck, 2007; Wallace, 2003; Wijeyesinghe, 2001, 2012). One of the often-discussed factors in racial and ethnic identity construction is the phenotype or physical characteristics of the individual and consequent implications for self-and group-identification (Miville et al., 2005; Ozaki & Renn, 2015; Rockquemore, 2002; Talbot, 2008; Wijeyesinghe, 2001, 2012). The multiracial literature is ripe with discussion and examples of ways in which an individual’s physical characteristics factor into his or her social experiences, including racist and discriminatory experiences (King, 2011; Literte, 2010; Ozaki & Johnston, 2008; Ozaki & Renn, 2015; Renn, 2004; Rockquemore, 2002; Talbot, 2008), yet the conversation is rarely couched in terms of colorism.

Privileging stillness as a central strategy in the activity of the psychoanalyst is questioned as the only effective clinical strategy for optimizing a psychoanalytic focus. Stillness is demonstrated to have an array of potential affective impact as opposed to the traditional assumption of neutral impact or the creation of a space for meaning to emerge. An example of the duration of silence is used to illustrate that attention to the polyrhythmic weave of timing in the interactions constituted by analysand and analyst can prove to be at least as rich a fulcrum for generating meaning in the psychoanalytic process as a strategy of sustaining silence as space for transference projections by the analysand or reverie for the analyst. The emerging field of cognition and culture has had some success in explaining the spread of counterintuitive religious concepts around the world. However, researchers have been reluctant to extend its findings to explain the widespread occurrence of culturally counterintuitive ideas in general. This article develops a broader notion of social counterintuitiveness to include ideas that violate shared expectations of a group of people and argues that the notion of social counterintuitiveness is more crucial to explaining cultural success of surprising ideas than the traditional notion of individual counterintuitiveness. Building on the context-based account of individual counterintuitiveness, the article also outlines how the once unorthodox cultural ideas become conventionalized over time only to be swept under the next wave of cultural innovation. By helping us peel away the layers of tradition that weave together the multilayered tapestry of culture, this account can be useful for understanding the development of cultural scaffolding that is needed to support the spread of maximally counterintuitive concepts such as widespread religious concepts of God and ghosts.

This article is concerned with the role of formal education in the upward social mobility of women in the Sirwa, a marginal Berber region of southern Morocco where carpets are produced by women, and marketed by men. To explore why girls' education in weaving takes precedence over formal education, the article considers the place of women's education in the livelihood strategies of the household and the significance of marriage in women's social mobility.

This article explores areas of law loosely within English equity and trusts law that have not conventionally been subject to feminist debate, and within the context of a discussion about feminist method. The particular areas examined are whistleblowing and trustees’ powers of investment, each of which calls for consideration of decision-making processes which have an ethical content. These sites are chosen because they take debate outside the all too familiar locations of woman or ‘the body of woman’, including the family home, where feminist analysis in relation to equity and trusts tends to stray. In exploring these chosen fields, Hobby’s (Feminist Perspectives on Equity and Trusts, Cavendish Publishing, 2001, pp. 219–255) critique of gender dimensions in relation to whistleblowing and Dunn’s (Feminist Perspectives on Equity and Trusts, Cavendish Publishing, 2001, pp. 179–196) account of women trustees’ investment decisions are evaluated and developed. The debate within feminist legal criticism of the possibility of integrating an ‘ethics of care’ and an ‘ethics of rights’ is acknowledged. Whilst acknowledging of the difficulty of adopting an approach that recognises ‘mixed logics’, it is concluded that women (and men) do integrate the ethics of care and the ethics of rights in their decision-making. It is argued that the effort should be made to trace the specific weave in particular circumstances, thereby paying suspicious attention to the values that underlie courts’ analyses of ethical choices.

This paper compares Malaysia's Multimedia Super-corridor (MSC) and New York's Silicon Alley to assess whether state-led development of digital districts is a viable alternative to neo-liberal approaches. The changing nature of east Asia's developmental states as they adopt neo-liberal elements (such as venture capital) casts doubt on the idea that east Asian cities are `embedded' in developmental frameworks. Using actor-network theory to conceptualise the nesting of cities as processes of 'translation', the paper examines how state frameworks in the US and Malaysia shaped the respective efforts of district entrepreneurs to weave together ideas, resources and relationships. The findings confirm actor-network theory's claim that the significance of a particular element depends on the network it becomes enmeshed in. In the case of Silicon Alley, neo-liberal regimes did not directly participate but promoted devices (such as venture capital, options) that enabled venture capitalists to bring together myriad enterpreneurs. In contrast, the Malaysian state, which is deemed a 'developmental hybrid', devised a comprehensive plan for the MSC and itself used devices such as venture capital to enrol participants. While Silicon Alley was a temporary base for circulating capital, the MSC effort is creating an enduring foundation for digital industry.

Context and meaning are notions inseparably tied together. Yet although appeal to context would seem inevitable in any discussion of meaning and understanding, the notion seems to be resistant to any attempt to render it in precise and non-question-begging terms. Context may be ubiquitous, but it is also opaque. This paper explores the notion of context in general, arguing that an understanding of context is essential for any attempt to elucidate the structure and possibility of meaning. Moreover, while the contextual character of meaning is seen to imply a form of holism about meaning, it also requires that any such holism be understood in a way that is realised only in relation to particular settings or ‘locales’. In this respect, contextuality not only gives rise to holism, but also constrains it, thereby pre-empting certain objections that are sometimes advanced against holistic approaches to meaning.

The connections between home and work are manifest in tensions which exist between individual employment mobility and the social and spatial situatedness of the household micro-economy. This nexus is a significant dimension of a growing number of dual earning households. At a fundamental level, the co-ordination of home and work hinges on opportunities and constraints pertaining to residential location and mobility and the way this issue is negotiated through the life-course. However, this is not simply determined by the many logistical difficulties associated with the co-ordination of more than one employment from a single residential location. Households are `situated' in place in a variety of ways which feed into strategies of relative mobility and attachment to place. It is suggested that the way that households accommodate the demands of home and work are constituted through a meshing together of the action spaces and social relations of individual household members in these spheres. In effect, household behaviour emerges from a `tangled web' of networks: of social and kin relations; of resource provision; and of information, knowledge and learning. This paper argues for the need to attend to the situatedness of household strategies that attempt to co-ordinate home and work. It suggests that this is achieved by observing the way strategies of relative mobility and attachment to place reproduce, and are reproduced through, networks within a locale. Existing concepts of strategy and network are combined and operationalised together through the interpretation of biographical narratives from interviews with couples from a sample of nuclear family households.

Prior research shows that a root cause of many privacy concerns in location-sharing social media is people's desire to preserve offline relationship boundaries. Other literature recognizes lying as an everyday phenomenon that preserves such relationship boundaries by facilitating smooth social interactions. Combining these strands of research, one might hypothesize that people with a predisposition to lie would generally have lower privacy concerns since lying is a means to preserve relationship boundaries. We tested this hypothesis using structural equation modeling on data from a survey administered nationwide (N=1532), and found that for location-sharing, people with a high propensity to lie actually have increased boundary preservation concerns as well as increased privacy concerns. We explain these findings using results from semi-structured interviews.

Le present article confronte l'anthropologie de l'apprentissage a l'anthropologie du travail en revelant les relations entre les processus d'acquisition d'une competence et la connaissance de cette competence, de ses possibilites et de ses ramifications. Le sujet ethnographique de l'article concerne les tisserands de tapis Labbai de la ville de Pattamadai, dans le Sud de l'Inde, qui ont une attitude ambivalente vis-a-vis de leur statut de tisserands. L'auteur met en regard cette ambivalence et l'interet eveille par le tissage chez un intervenant en developpement qui cherchait a promouvoir l'artisanat du tissage et avait meme appris a tisser. La meme competence est approchee differemment par differentes sortes de personnes: celles-ci voient et comprennent des choses differentes. L'apprentissage et la connaissance ne peuvent pas etre facilement dissocies. En se concentrant sur les differents buts et modes de l'apprentissage, sur la production sociale de connaissance et sur des cas de communication bien et mal menee, l'article explore la production incorporee et historicisee de connaissances par differentes sortes de personnes: les tisserands, le professionnel du developpement et, dans une certaine mesure, l'anthropologue.

It is not uncommon to explore the views of parents and children in qualitative research with families. Yet the implications and challenges of a multiple perspective approach often remain at a relatively taken-for-granted level. In this article we draw on our experience across a range of qualitative interview-based projects, focusing in particular on two case studies, to illustrate the practical working out of the challenges posed by multiple perspective research in families. The implications of research with parents and children are discussed in relation to two themes - power and truth. This discussion reflects on the challenges and benefits of multiple perspective research at different points in the research process. It is not the intention of this article to try to provide definitive 'answers' to some of the challenges posed. Rather we aim to open up discussion by reflecting on a range of scenarios, offering suggestions based on our experience, and so, allow the reader to reflect on the particularities of their own research.

Feelings (or “emotions”) have frequently been debated in feminist theory. A large part of this discussion can be considered to aim at a “rehabilitation of the emotions”. However, when feminist theorists make epistemological claims concerning “emotions”, i.e. what philosophy of mind calls “mental states”, we run a grave risk of ending up in subjectivism and thus of reiterating the “private access fallacy” of traditional epistemology. Starting from the feeling of shame (a paradigm for a socially constructed feeling), this article makes a Wittgensteinian reading of “emotions” which offers an alternative to the atomistic, mentalistic and episodical view of mainstream philosophy of mind. Wittgenstein's thrust against foundationalism, his conceptual remarks about “inner experiences”, his anti‐behaviourism and his emphasis on the primacy of action, are all concordant with the social constructionism of the slogan “The personal is political”.

It is no secret that the Internet has transforemd the way we communicate with each other in the modern world. No longer "a unique and wholly new medium of worldwide human communication,"2 the Internet has seen a dramatic increase in the number of users across the glove, from about 40 million at a time of trial in Reno v. ACLU,3 to more than 1.1 billion today.4 As is becoming ever more clear as the technology contrinues to develpo, in merely a decade, this "explosion" of the Internet has led to a host of legal complications, challenging some of our most fundamental legal assumptions and doctrines. Basic notions of jurisdiction and enforcement are turned on their head, as "content on the Internet does not exist in one particular place; rather, it exists in several places at once."5 But these complications are not just a matter for scholars, lawyers, and judges. Underlying this legal chaso is a cultural battleground, as different nations find themselves confronted with the question of how to preserve national values in the face of a medium that is quite adept at transcending territorial borders.

"To Weave and Sing" is the first in-depth analysis of the rich spiritual and artistic traditions of the Carib-speaking Yekuana Indians of Venezuela, who live in the dense rain forest of the upper Orinoco. Within their homeland of Ihuruna, the Yekuana have succeeded in maintaining the integrity and unity of their culture, resisting the devastating effects of acculturation that have befallen so many neighboring groups. Yet their success must be attributed to more than natural barriers of rapids and waterfalls, to more than lack of 'contact' with our 'modern' world. The ethnographic history recounted here includes not only the Spanish discovery of the Yekuana but detailed indigenous accounts of the entire history of Yekuana contact with Western culture, revealing an adaptive technique of mythopoesis by which the symbols of a new and hostile European ideology have been consistently defused through their incorporation into traditional indigenous structures. The author's initial point of departure is the Watunna, the Yekuana creation epic, but he finds his principal entrance into this mythic world through basketry, focusing on the elaborate kinetic designs of the round waja baskets and the stories told about them. Guss argues that the problem of understanding Yekuana basketry is the problem of understanding all traditional art forms within a tribal context, and critiques the cultural assumptions inherent in our systems of classification. He demonstrates that the symbols woven into the baskets function not in isolation but collectively, as a powerful system cutting across the entire culture. "To Weave and Sing" addresses all Yekuana material culture and the greater reality it both incorporates and masks, discerning a unifying configuration of symbols in chapters on architectural forms, the geography of the body, and the use of herbs, face paints, and chants. A narrow view of slash-and-burn gardens as places of mere subsistence is challenged by Guss' portrait of these exclusively female spaces as systematic inversions of the male world, 'the sacred turned on its head'. Throughout, a wealth of narrative and ritual materials provides us with the closest approximation we have to a native exegesis of these phenomena. What we are offered here is a new Poetics of Culture, ethnography not as a static given but as a series of shifting fields, wherein culture (and our image of it) is constantly recreated in all of its parts, by all of its members.

The research proposed is a sample of the breaking down of academic walls that lead students to investigate their neighboring communities. It was presented under a pedagogical practice of participatory communication within the classroom, which sought to strengthen the social fabric built from the bilateral academy-community approach, from an exercise of reconstruction of historical memory with the students of the 6th semester of Social Communication - Journalism from Uniminuto, Zipaquirá Regional Center. The initial purpose was debated in investigating identity reflections of unique conformation, with the popular stories of the older adult of the municipality. For this, an Action Research exercise was proposed, guided by semi-structured interviews, field diaries, and documentary research, which finally allowed them to recognize, reconstruct and strengthen their memory and identify the site. This strategy debated the pedagogical practices within the classroom thought outwards, creating, at the same time, spaces for academic analysis-reflection around the context. This leads to a deep approach to popular memory processes in the municipality of Zipaquirá, reevaluating the forms of identity rescue of oral tradition immersed in the territory. Likewise, the training of student researchers was proposed, capable of recognizing their reality, taking action, and alternating on it., La investigación planteada es una muestra de ruptura de muros académicos que llevan a los estudiantes a indagar sus comunidades próximas. Fue presentada bajo una práctica pedagógica de comunicación participativa al interior del aula, que pretendió fortalecer el tejido social construido desde el acercamiento bilateral academia-comunidad, a partir de un ejercicio de reconstrucción de memoria histórica con los estudiantes de VI semestre de Comunicación Social – Periodismo de Uniminuto, Centro Regional Zipaquirá. El propósito inicial se debatió en el indagar reflejos identitarios de conformación personal, con las historias populares del adulto mayor del municipio. Para ello, se planteó un ejercicio de Investigación Acción, guiado por entrevistas semiestructuradas, diarios de campo e investigación documental, que finalmente permitieron reconocer, reconstruir y fortalecer su memoria personal y la identificación del sitio. Dicha estrategia debatió las prácticas pedagógicas al interior del aula pensadas hacia afuera, creando al mismo tiempo, espacios de análisis-reflexión académica en torno al contexto. Lo anterior, conlleva al acercamiento profundo de procesos de memoria popular en el municipio de Zipaquirá, reevaluando las formas de rescate identitario de tradición oral inmersa en el territorio. Así mismo, se propuso la formación de estudiantes investigadores, capaces de reconocer su realidad, tomando actuación y alternancia sobre esta.

Este artículo es producto de una experiencia investigativa que interpreta, a partir de los actores sociales las múltiples dimensiones de los espacios públicos en la ciudad de Pereira. El estudio permitió comprender cómo los vendedores informales, a partir de sus prácticas comerciales construyen, representan y apropian la ciudad, en un sector de concurrido paso y concentración peatonal como es la Carrera Octava de Pereira. El contenido del artículo devela una lectura de ciudad a través de las experiencias significativas construidas desde las prácticas cotidianas de los vendedores informales. La información que se recolectó fue producto de la combinación de técnicas e instrumentos del diseño etnográfico en investigación cualitativa, dando cuenta de las formas de apropiación, usos y significados que se construyen en los espacios públicos como escenarios permanentes de manifestación política, cultural y social. This article is the product of a research experience that interprets, from the social actors, the multiple dimensions of public spaces in the city of Pereira, located in the western center of Colombia. The study allowed understanding how informal street corner vendors, based on their commercial practices, build, represent and appropriate the city, in a sector of crowded passage and pedestrian concentration such as Carrera Octava in the city of Pereira. The content of the article reveals the reading of the city through significant experiences built from the daily practices of informal street corner vendors. The information collected was the product of the combination of ethnographic design techniques and tools in qualitative research, giving an account of the forms of appropriation, uses and meanings that are constructed in public spaces as permanent scenarios of political, cultural and social manifestation.

This paper describes an adaptation of a methodology called mutual interrogation to an ethnomathematical study on Malay weaving. Mutual interrogation is the process of implementing a critical dialogue between two knowledge systems; mathematical knowledge and cultural knowledge. It is proposed as a way of resolving several common issues in investigations of mathematical knowledge in cultural practice. Using this approach, a three-phase dialogue between Malay food cover (tudung saji) weavers and mathematicians was implemented. The interactions between the conventions of the weavers and the conceptions of the mathematicians have uncovered several interesting perspectives that address critiques of ethnomathematical research.
