An illuminating introduction to the methods and problems of social anthropology, this book draws on a wide range of illustrations, including Raymond Firth's own experiences in New Zealand, Malaya and the Solomon Islands. The concept of social organisation is discussed with special reference to the role of individual choice and decision in social affairs and the nature of social change. Local efforts to redesign systems of care offer fertile ground for community-based participatory research approaches to take hold and flourish. Drawing on the experiences of a learning collaborative of maternal and child healthcare stakeholders in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, this article describes 8 action steps for operationalizing key community-based participatory research principles in the context of local systems change. Highlights of the subsequent evolution of the collaborative and its work are provided, as well as comments regarding the generalizability and usefulness of this approach for other public health and community stakeholders who are interested in mobilizing collaborative action for systems change.

Anthropological studies of religion have been largely concerned with belief, with ritual, and with the general integrative significance of religious institutions for society. But many issues in the power relations of religious affiliation are still not clear. The political implications of religion involve grave practical as well as theoretical problems. Abstractly, religion and politics are often conceived as opposed; concretely, they interact. While religion can be a powerful political instrument, it can also adapt to political ends and generate its own political structures. In contrast to the broadly affirmative role assigned by anthropologists to religion in society is Karl Marx's thesis of religion as political ideology. Reasons for granting some validity to this position but also for questioning its basic assumptions are given. The whole analysis is illustrated by a wide range of examples, from Polynesian ethnography to the history of Christianity and of Islam, and the situation of religion in modem socialist states.

The paper traces the relationship between anthropologists and the medical profession during the last hundred years, as part of a trilogy entitled: Anthropology and Sociology—a Necessary Dialogue?—given to the Medical Sociology section of the British Sociological Association in 1976. Although social anthropologists in England have had a long and close relationship both with the medical profession and with sociologists, the relations have not always been comfortable for the anthropologists. In tracing the history of the relationship over the last hundred years, I have used personal knowledge as well as published material. I have examined some of the difficulties in day to day collaboration rather than different theoretical contributions, since this was to be Dr. Comaroff's contribution. On the whole I have looked at the position of the British anthropologist studying social structure rather than the American with his emphasis on culture, which was to be the subject of Dr. Kaufert's paper. An early interest in psychiatry, nutrition and then public health abroad, and later at home, first brought anthropologists and medicals together; but the close collaboration which developed in the U.S.A. has not been repeated in this country. Some tentative reasons for, the distant relations between the two professions are suggested, which may be the result of initial training and methods of professional apprenticeship. These are perhaps not likely to be easily overcome in the near future in England.
