The analysis of the sexual and international divisions of care work brings about the centrality of women’s work. This chapter will explore deeply this argument by comparing three countries—Brazil, France, and Japan. These three societies are profoundly different not only in terms of economic and technological aspects but also in the particular ways they have been experiencing economic crisis. The chapter will explore the behavior of the crucial actors in care economy, namely the State, the market, and the family in order to document how they come together to impact the modalities of the sexual and international divisions of labor. The professionalization of care work entails the need for vocational training, and the chapter shows the different ways the three countries meet this requirement. Theoretical questions raised by the field work are discussed in the conclusion: theories of care and sociological paradigms, the theory of intersectionality (interdependence between gender, race, and class relations), and the centrality of women’s work.

O artigo apresenta as convergencias e diferencas principais entre a situacao das mulheres no Brasil e na Franca. Para essa comparacao, ele parte da analise da divisao sexual do trabalho profissional e domestico nos dois paises, e da relacao entre vida familiar e vida profissional. Tambem compara as diferentes modalidades de precarizacao social e do trabalho que afetam desigualmente as mulheres brasileiras e francesas.

Dimension centrale de la condition de chômage, la recherche d’emploi est généralement analysée à partir des comportements et des stratégies développés par les chômeurs pour obtenir un emploi. Pourtant, la distension des liens entre le chômage et l’emploi transforme cette quête en épreuve à l’issue incertaine. Les expériences de recherche d’emploi peuvent alors être prises en compte dans une autre perspective : non pas pour leur efficacité directe dans la sortie du chômage, mais pour leur contribution aux processus de définition de la situation par rapport à l’emploi. En nous appuyant sur un corpus d’entretiens biographiques collectés auprès de personnes confrontées au chômage, à Paris, São Paulo et Tokyo, nous tentons de comprendre comment ils conçoivent la recherche d’emploi, comment ils parlent de leurs expériences, comment ils argumentent leurs pratiques. As a central dimension of the state of unemployment, job-seeking is usually analyzed through behavior and strategies developed by the unemployed in order to find work. However, the distension of ties between unemployment and employment transforms this search into a challenge with an uncertain outcome. Experiences of job-seeking can therefore be seen from a different perspective: not in terms of their direct effectiveness in relation to leaving unemployment, but rather in terms of how they contribute to processes of definition of the lived situation in relation to employment. By basing this work on a corpus of biographical interviews collected from people confronted with unemployment in Paris, São Paulo, and Tokyo, we attempt to understand how they conceptualize the job search, how they discuss their experience, and how they discuss their practices. Dimensão central da situação de desemprego, a procura de emprego é geralmente analisada a partir de comportamentos e estratégias desenvolvidos pelos desempregados para conseguir um emprego. Todavia, a distenção dos vínculos entre desemprego e emprego transforma esta procura em prova cujo fim é incerto. As experiências de procura de emprego podem então ser vistas numa outra perspectiva: não por sua eficácia direta e relação à saida do desemprego, mas na sua contribuição aos processos de definição da situação vivida em relação ao emprego. Baseando-nos num corpus de entrevistas biográficas recolhidas junto a pessoas confrontadas com o desemprego em Paris, São Paulo e Tóquio, tentamos compreender como concebem a procura de emprego, como falam de sua experiência, como argumentam sobre suas práticas.

La condition de chômeur est marquée par l'obligation de recherche d'emploi, mais cette définition internationale dissimule des réalités hétérogènes. L'objectif de ce livre est d’explorer la diversité des significations du chômage : comment les chômeurs vivent-ils et interprètent-ils leur situation à Paris, à São Paulo et à Tokyo ? Le chômage a-t-il le même sens partout ? L’ouvrage retrace les manières dont le chômage est vécu par des hommes et des femmes de milieux sociaux et d’âges différents dans ces trois métropoles. Cette démarche comparative permet de repérer plusieurs échelles de variation : internationale, avec un univers de significations commun aux chômeurs des trois pays ; nationale, avec l’affirmation de modèles de référence spécifiques à chaque territoire ; transnationale, avec des expériences qui se recoupent selon le sexe, l’âge et la catégorie sociale, quel que soit le pays. Fruit d’enquêtes par entretiens biographiques approfondis et d’une méthode inédite de comparaison internationale, ce livre renouvelle les connaissances sur le chômage d’une façon aussi originale que passionnante. Resumo: Este artigo analisa, de uma perspectiva comparativa, aspectos do processo de construção social do trabalho de care, em particular as suas tênues fronteiras com o trabalho doméstico. Focaliza três realidades socioculturais distintas, as da França, do Japão e do Brasil, hoje desafiadas por um problema comum, o do envelhecimento das suas populações, do qual decorre o relevo que adquirem as ocupações associadas ao cuidado com os idosos e dependentes. "Auxiliaires de vie", "helpers" ou "cuidadoras", as pessoas dedicadas a essa ocupação partilham características, a mais destacável o fato de serem mulheres. Mas elas se diferenciam em aspectos relativos seja às características dos respectivos mercados de trabalho, que impactam nas suas trajetórias ocupacionais; seja às estruturas familiares e aos atores envolvidos no "cuidado"; seja às políticas públicas para o setor e aos requisitos de formação profissional para os que nele atuam. A esses aspectos o artigo dedica as suas principais sessões, que serão antecedidas por uma breve revisão sobre a categoria e as diversas declinações do care, no discurso analítico e no linguajar nativo. Abstract: This article examines, in a comparative perspective, aspects of the social construction of care work, in particular its thin boundaries with domestic labor. It focus on three socio-cultural realities, those of France, Japan and Brazil, now challenged by the aging of their populations and the increasing importance of those occupations related to the provision of care for elderly and dependent people. "Auxiliaires de vie", "helpers" or "cuidadoras" share features, most notable the fact they are women. But they also differ (I) on the characteristics of their labor markets and occupational trajectories, (II) on the family structures and actors mobilized in care provision and (III) on skill requirements and public policies related to care. The article encompasses three main sessions focusing these aspects, preceded by a brief conceptual revision dealing with the inflections of care in the analytic discourse and native language.

Nos ultimos quinze anos, a precarizacao socioeconomica e um dos temas centrais no debate das ciencias sociais na Franca. A primeira parte deste trabalho enfoca o debate sobre a reestruturacao economica e sua incidencia sobre o mundo operario. A segunda propoe modelos interpretativos das causa da precarizacao socioeconomica a partir de uma reflexao sobre as transformacoes do trabalho. Tais transformacoes afetam alguns grupos particularmente vulneraveis: mulheres, jovens, imigrantes. A terceira parte e consagrada ao tratamento de tais grupos. Enfim, a questao da exclusao e dos efeitos da precarizacao sobre as praticas sociais fora do trabalho, assim como as repercussoes das transformacoes da vida cotidiana sobre a relacao do trabalhador com sua atividade profissional, serao tratadas na quarta parte. LABOR, EXCLUSION AND SOCIOECONOMIC PRECARIZATION : social sciences debate in France Helena Hirata Edmond Preteceille For the last fifteen years, the social scinces debate in France has centered in socioeconomic precarization. The first part of the paper focus on the debate about the economic restructuring and its incidence on the world of labor; the second one proposes interpretative models for the socioeconomic precarization causes based on thoughts on labor transformations. The referred transformations affect some especially vulnerable groups: women, youths, and immigrants. The third part is dedicated to the form of dealing with these groups. Finally, the issue of exclusion and the effects of precarization on the social practices that are not inserted in the labor environment, as well as the repercussions of the daily life transformation on the relationship of the workers with their professional will be approached in the fourth part. As características (formas, duração e seletividade) do desemprego e sua percepção pelos atores são dotadas de diferentes configurações nacionais, em função tanto de dimensões históricas como socioculturais. Neste texto apresentamos resultados relativos à situação de desemprego em dois contextos sociais distintos, representados pelas regiões metropolitanas de São Paulo e de Tóquio. Tais resultados foram obtidos a partir de dois surveys amostrais, realizados em 2001 nas duas metrópoles, a partir de um desenho de pesquisa de tipo comparativo. The characteristics (form, duration and selectivity) of unemployment and its perception by social actors, are made up of different national configurations, due not only to historical but also to social and cultural dimensions. This paper deals with unemployment situation in two distinct social contexts, the metropolitan regions of São Paulo and Tokyo. Empirical data come from two sample surveys, conducted in both metropolis, and based upon a comparative research design.

Os quatro textos apresentados a seguir, sobre divisão capitalista do trabalho, qualificação, divisão do trabalho entre os sexos e psicopatologia do trabalho, foram redigidos originalmente para servir de material de discussão para o curso "Tecnologia, processos de trabalho e políticas de emprego" efetuado no quadro do Programa de Pós-Graduação do Departamento de Sociologia da Universidade de São Paulo, no segundo semestre de 1987. Seus autores têm todos livros publicados sobre os temas tratados nesses textos sintéticos. Michel Freyssenet, autor do 1º texto, é igualmente autor de La division capitaliste du travail, editado pela ed. Savelli em 1977. É pesquisador do Centre de Sociologie Urbaine do CNRS. Pierre Rolle, autor do 2 texto, escreveu igualmente a Introduction à la Sociologie du Travail, ed. Larousse, 1971 e acaba de publicar um novo tratado de Sociologia do trabalho (Travail et Salariat, Presses Universitaires de Grenoble, 1988). É Professor da Université de Paris X (Nanterre). Danièle Kergoat, autora do 3º texto, é animadora do GEDISST (Groupe d’Etude sur la Division Sociale et Sexuelle du Travail) — CNRS, onde orienta pesquisas sobre o trabalho feminino e a divisão do trabalho entre os sexos. É autora do livro Les Ouvrières, editado pela ed. Sycomore em 1982. Ela faz parte do programa de pós-graduação em Sociologia da Université de Paris VII (Jussieu). Finalmente, Christophe Dejours, autor do 4º texto, é médico, psiquiatra e psicanalista, e clínica no Hospital de Orsay. Seu livro L’usure au travail (ed. Centurion, 1980) foi traduzido para o português em 1987 pela ed. Oboré-Cortez sob o título A loucura do trabalho. A tradução que fizemos desses textos foi revista pelos participantes dos seminários realizados durante o curso mencionado. The four texts presented below, on capitalist division of labour, skilled work, sexual division of labour and labour psychopathology, were first written as seminar papers for a course on "Technology, labour processes and employement policies", delivered in the second semester of 1987 at the Sociology Department of the University of São Paulo, as part of its Graduate Studies Program. Their authors have all published books on the subjects synthetically presented in these papers. Michel Freyssenet, the author of the first, also wrote La division capitaliste du travail, published by Ed. Savelli, 1977. He is a researcher at the Centre de Sociologie Urbaine of the CNRS in Paris. Pierre Rolle, the author of the second text, also wrote an Introduction à la Sociologie du Travail (Ed. Larousse, 1971) and has just published a new treatise on the Sociology of Labour (Travail et Salariat, Presses Universitaires de Grenoble, 1988). He is a professor at the University of Paris X (Nanterre). Danielle Kergoat, the author of the third paper, coordinates a research group in the CNRS (GEDISST — Groupe d’Etude sur la Division Sociale et Sexuelle du Travail), supervising research on women’s work and the sexual division of labour. She is the author of Les Ouvrières (published by Ed. Sycomore,1982) and works at the Sociology Graduate Studies Program of the University of Paris VII (Jussieu). Finally, Christophe Dejours, the author of the last text, is a medical doctor, a psychiatrist and a psychoanalist, and he works at the Orsay Hospital. His book L’usure du travail (Ed. Centurion, 1980) was translated into Portuguese as A loucura do trabalho, published by Ed. Oboré-Cortez in 1987. The translation we did of these texts was revised by the students who participated in the seminars that were part of the above mentioned course.
