This paper attempts to provide a historical sojourn from the origin to the present-day state of the surviving Spanish-based creoles, namely, Papiamento, Palenquero and Chabacano, in order to offer a brief description of their main characteristics on the lexical, morphosyntactic and phonological levels. At the same time, taking into account the criteria outlined by the Unesco regarding the survival and extinction of languages, the article foresees the future of these Spanish-based creoles.
