The article focuses on Marxism and feminism, and addresses the question of whether equality of women and men can be achieved in a capitalistic society. The Women's Liberation Movement began in patriarchal civilization and operated within a class society. The author believes that feminine characteristics are conditioned by society and are not biological or natural. The Women's Liberation Movement is essential because in this man's world women are forced to think a particular direction and are subjected to a specific kind of repression. The struggle for full economic, social, and cultural equality is the one level on which the Movement operates. In this capitalist society it is difficult for the Movement to realize its goals, so the framework within which it now operates must be transcended.

The author of this essay submits for discussion a theoretical analysis of the situation in which the radical movement finds itself in the 1970s. He hopes that the analysis is indeed a Marxist analysis, if Marxism means more than regurgitating concepts that were elaborated a hundred years ago. The analysis starts with two theses. First, the close of the 20th century may well mean the advent of the first world historical revolution. Second, the progress of this revolution is counteracted by a preventive counterrevolution organized on a global scale and centered in the U.S. The picture he will describe seems to corroborate, in the author's belief, one of the central theses of Marxian theory, which apparently was refuted by the actual developments in the 20th century up to now, namely, the thesis that a totally socialist society is possible only on a worldwide scale, and that such a revolution would start in the most highly developed industrial country.
