The Metaphysics of Cooperation presents the intellectual achievements of the Polish associative socialist and pioneer of social sciences, Edward Abramowski. The volume is divided into five sections, each of them contains an analysis of Polish philosopher's work according to the issues he dealt with: sociology, ethics, politics, cooperativism, and psychology. Each part also contains a selection of his writings. Its intention is to show Abramowski's works in the context of global intellectual history and to include them in the current political debates. Abramowski makes fraternity or cooperation the main concepts of his social metaphysics. The Polish version of cooperativism can be inspiring both for contemporary researchers and political activists in the post-economic-crisis Europe. It also opens up a space for creating more democratic political and economic institutions.

Arguing that Marxist socialism is not only more gradual but also more radical than how it is usually understood, this book shows that socialism extends liberalism by inheriting and furthering liberal justice, including fundamental human rights. Simultaneously, socialism ultimately rejects liberalism because it does not consider liberal values, such as liberty and equality, society's primary principles. Satoshi Matsui offers a new theory: alienation has two dimensions. Marxists seek to rectify policies that violate justice in a capitalist society, and injustice in capitalism is alienation's first dimension. From a communist society's perspective, however, justice itself is an alienated idea and the second dimension of alienation. Marx's theory of alienation does not deny the liberal theory of justice but is rather a universal system that encompasses it. By fundamentally reexamining Marxism, this volume provides a basic guideline for overcoming capitalist society and constructing a communist society.

Die Erforschung der sozialmoralischen Milieus in Deutschland hat sich in den letzten 50 Jahren fast vollständig auf das sozialistische oder das katholische Milieu beschränkt und damit weite Teile der Bevölkerung außer Acht gelassen. Doch gab es neben diesen beiden eindeutig nachgewiesenen Milieus überhaupt weitere? Wie haben sich diese konstituiert und wer gehörte ihnen an? Diese Leitfragen werden in der vorliegenden Untersuchung anhand des Beispiels der Freien und Hansestadt Lübeck während der Weimarer Republik zwischen 1919 und 1933 untersucht. Lübeck gilt als'rote Stadt', die Existenz eines sozialistischen Milieus muss geradezu vorausgesetzt werden. Doch die Stadt hatte auch eine lange und reichhaltige konservative und liberale Tradition, das'Hanseatentum'prägte die Stadt wie kaum eine andere und so stellt sich die Frage, ob nicht gerade in Lübeck die Voraussetzungen gegeben waren, um auch ein nationales Milieu herauszubilden. Die vergleichende Untersuchung unterschiedlicher Milieus ermöglicht es gleichzeitig, wichtige Forschungslücken in Bezug auf die Zeitgeschichte Lübecks zu schließen.
