The aims of this study were: 1) to describe the total muscular injuries, and specifically HSIs, and their corresponding missed matches; 2) to analyse their economic impact; and 3) to estimate the loss of incomes due to TV rights, in first division clubs from LaLigaTM depending on the expected and actual ranking position during the 2018/2019 season. To do that, a cross-sectional study for season 18/19 and for all players of the 20 Spanish professional football clubs was performed. The economic impact of injuries was estimated considering the missed matches and salary cost of all players and the audio-visual income loss was estimated considering the Spanish Royal Decree of Law (RDL 5/2015). The high number of muscular (270) and hamstring injuries (57) implies a high cost for professional first division football clubs, specifically € 365,811 per month for the former and € 47,388 per month for the latter. In addition, reaching a worse than expected position in LaLigaTM ranking involved a loss of 45,2 million € in TV rights incomes. Objectives: To determine the relationship between injury incidence, player-salary cost and team performance in the professional Australian soccer league., Design: Prospective observational cohort study., Methods: Injury incidence, player-salary cost and team performance data were collected from the 10-club A-League competition (n=27 matches/season) over 6 seasons from 2012/13. Player-salary cost of injury was calculated from the salary cap, injury-induced missed matches and player exposure, and trends were reported from Poisson regressions. Team performance was determined from ranking, points, goals (scored, conceded and difference) and match outcome (win, loss or draw) per season and analysed via a mixed-effects Poisson models to estimate association with injury., Results: Nine-hundred-and-sixteen injuries resulted in 3148 missed matches. Injury incidence remained stable apart from a decrease in 2015/16 (p=0.01). Missed matches were significantly higher in season 2013/14 (55.1 [50.7-59.9]; p<0.01) and 2014/15 (71.4 [66.4-76.8]; p<0.001) compared to 2012/13, without differences between other seasons. Player-salary cost ranged between AUD$187,990-AUD$332,680/team, peaking in 2014/15 (p<0.01). Multi-collinearity was detected for team performance variables except for matches lost. Teams who finished the season with greater positive goal differences were associated with 1% less injuries (p=0.003). Similarly, more missed matches were associated with 1% less league points and losses (p<0.001)., Conclusions: Player-salary costs remained stable, concomitant with stable injury rates and missed matches. Despite injury being associated with goals difference, points and match losses; the magnitude of these relationships are small and team performance is more complex than injury occurrence alone. Background: Soccer injuries constitute an important public health problem and cause a high economic burden. Nevertheless, comprehensive data regarding injury costs in nonprofessional soccer are missing. The aim of this study was to determine which groups of nonprofessional soccer athletes, injury types, and injury situations caused high injury costs., Methods: A cross-sectional, retrospective telephone survey was carried out with a random sample of persons who had sustained a soccer injury between July 2013 and June 2014 and who had reported this accident to the Swiss National Accident Insurance Fund (Suva). One year after the corresponding accident, every injury was linked to its costs and to the answers obtained in the interview about injury setting, injury characteristics, and injury causes. Finally, the costs of 702 injuries were analyzed., Results: The average cost of an injury in nonprofessional soccer amounted to €4030 (bias-corrected and accelerated 95% confidence interval (BCa 95%CI): 3427-4719). Persons aged 30 years and older experienced 35% of soccer injuries but accounted for 49% of all costs. A total of 58% of all costs were the result of injuries that occurred during amateur games. In particular, game injuries sustained by players in separate leagues for players aged 30+/40+ years led to high average costs of €8190 (BCa 95%CI: 5036-11,645). Knee injuries accounted for 25% of all injuries and were responsible for 53% of all costs. Although contact and foul play did not lead to above-average costs, twisting or turning situations were highly cost relevant, leading to an average sum of €7710 (BCa 95%CI: 5376-10,466) per injury., Conclusion: Nonprofessional soccer players aged 30 years and older and particularly players in 30+/40+ leagues had above-average injury costs. Furthermore, the prevention of knee injuries, noncontact and nonfoul play injuries, and injuries caused by twisting and turning should be of highest priority in decreasing health care costs., (Copyright © 2018. This study aimed to assess the cost-effectiveness of the "Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) 11" injury prevention programme for ankle and hamstring injuries. This retrospective cohort study included eighty-four male amateur football players aged 18-40 years. The exposed group performed the FIFA 11 protocol twice a week throughout the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 seasons; the unexposed group performed the usual training during the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 seasons. Lateral ankle ligament and hamstring injuries were recorded over the whole study period. We compared the mean costs associated with lateral ankle ligament and hamstring injuries in the two groups. The mean cost per player and lateral ankle injury was EUR 928 in the unexposed group versus EUR 647 in the exposed group ( p  = 0.19). The mean cost of hamstring injury per player was EUR 1271 in the unexposed group versus EUR 742 in the exposed group ( p  = 0.028). The mean total cost per player was EUR 2199 in the unexposed group versus EUR 1273 in the exposed group ( p  = 0.008). We concluded that the use of the FIFA 11 injury prevention programme reduced both the direct and indirect costs associated with lateral ankle ligament and hamstring injuries.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to develop a quick and simple screening procedure for evaluating the return on investment provided by injury prevention programmes in professional football. Injury prevention in sport has usually been considered in isolation of other management responsibilities, and interventions are published irrespective of whether their impact is worthwhile and irrespective of the return on players' time investment in the programme. This approach is naive from a business perspective and is not an approach normally adopted by commercial organisations., Methods: In professional football, the overwhelming cost associated with implementing an injury prevention programme is the players' time commitment, and the major benefit is the players' increased availability, achieved through the reduction in the number of injuries. A comparison of these time-based costs and benefits provides the basis for the evaluation process presented., Results: Applying the evaluation process to a number of published injury prevention programmes recommended for football demonstrates that they are unlikely to provide an adequate return on investment., Conclusions: Researchers should focus on developing injury prevention programmes that provide an adequate return on players' time investment, otherwise there is no incentive for clubs to implement the programmes. Reporting that an injury prevention programme produces a statistically significant reduction in the incidence of injury, for example, is insufficient information. Injury prevention programmes should focus on 'at risk' players to increase the return on investment, and researchers should evaluate and report on the utility of prevention programmes within the intended sports setting.

Background: There is randomised controlled trial (RCT) evidence that neuromuscular training (NMT) programmes can reduce the risk of injury in youth soccer. We evaluated the cost-effectiveness of such an NMT prevention strategy compared to a standard of practice warm-up., Methods: A cost-effectiveness analysis was conducted alongside a cluster RCT. Injury incidence rates were adjusted for cluster using Poisson regression analyses. Direct healthcare costs and injury incidence proportions were adjusted for cluster using bootstrapping. The joint uncertainty surrounding the cost and injury rate and proportion differences was estimated using bootstrapping with 10 000 replicates., Results: Along with a 38% reduction in injury risk (rate difference=-1.27/1000 player hours (95% CI -0.33 to -2.2)), healthcare costs were reduced by 43% in the NMT group (-$689/1000 player hours (95% CI -$1741 to $234)) compared with the control group. 90% of the bootstrapped ratios were in the south-west quadrant of the cost-effectiveness plane, showing that the NMT programme was dominant (more effective and less costly) over standard warm-up. Projecting results onto 58 100 Alberta youth soccer players, an estimated 4965 injuries and over $2.7 million in healthcare costs would be conservatively avoided in one season with implementation of a neuromuscular training prevention programme., Conclusions: Implementation of an NMT prevention programme in youth soccer is effective in reducing the burden of injury and leads to considerable reduction in costs. Introduction: Soccer is the world's most popular sport and one that is physically demanding and highly competitive. Consequently, the rate of injuries resulting from this sport is only increasing. It is estimated that 2-20% of all such injuries are fractures, one-third of which are located in the lower extremities. The aim of this epidemiological study was to investigate the incidence of lower-leg fractures (LLFs) in Belgian soccer players and determine the possible risk factors that lead to them., Methods: All injuries of players associated with the Royal Belgium Football Association (RBFA) were reported and collected in a nationwide registry. We retrospectively compared the incidence rate of and risk factors for LLFs in Belgian soccer players during two seasons, 1999-2000 and 2009-2010., Results: In total, 1600 fractures (3%) were located in the lower leg. After a decade, the number of LLFs remained unchanged. Ankle fractures were the most common (37%), followed by foot and tibia fractures (33% and 22%, respectively). The least common were fibula fractures, which accounted for just 9%. A higher incidence of every type of LLF was observed in older and amateur-level soccer players, when compared with their younger and professional counterparts. Male players experienced more tibia and foot fractures, whereas the incidences of ankle and fibula fractures were comparable with those in female soccer players. The vast majority of fractures occurred during soccer games., Conclusion: Ankle fractures and foot fractures represented two-thirds of all fractures noted in this analysis. Male gender, recreational level and adult age were important risk factors for LLFs. After 10 years, the incidence of LLFs did not decrease. Given the socioeconomic impact of these injuries, improved prevention techniques are required to reduce their incidence, particularly with regard to the frequently occurring ankle and foot fractures in this population., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: To compare the injury-related societal costs of an injury prevention program with usual warm up programs for amateur adult male soccer players., Design: Cost effectiveness analysis of a cluster-randomized controlled trial., Setting: Regional amateur male soccer competitions in the Netherlands during the 2009 season. Cost estimates in the Netherlands are made in 2009 Euros (&OV0556;1.00∼US$1.43 in late 2009)., Participants: Soccer teams from 2 first-class competitions (the second-highest Dutch amateur level) were approached. Male players aged between 18 and 40 years, who were part of the first team at the start of the season, were eligible for inclusion. Twenty-three teams including 479 players were randomized and 456 (95%) were included in the analysis., Intervention: The injury prevention program was The11, which includes 10 structured exercises developed by the FIFA Medical and Research Centre. The exercises, led by trained coaches, were designed to improve the stability, strength, co-ordination, and flexibility of the trunk, hip, and leg muscles and were performed 2 or 3 times per week as warm-up sessions. Compliance with the exercises was monitored randomly by the researchers. The control teams continued their usual warm-up routines. During the season, individual participants' exposure to training sessions or matches (in minutes) was reported weekly by the coaches. All participants completed questionnaires that included playing and injury history and current occupation and hours worked. Employment (vs studying) was nonsignificantly more common in the control group than the intervention group (68% vs 56%)., Main Cost and Outcome Measures: Costs included those of the intervention, direct healthcare costs of injury, and indirect costs such as hours of work lost, which were recorded on a recovery form. Injuries occurring during the competition season were recorded weekly by the paramedical staff of the team. An injury was defined as a physical complaint sustained by a participant that resulted from a soccer training session or soccer match, whether or not there was lost time from soccer or need for medical attention. Full recovery was defined as participation throughout a training or match session., Main Results: The players' injury rates were almost identical in the intervention and control groups (0.93 vs 0.94, representing 60.5% and 59.7% of players). The mean cost of The11, per player, was &OV0556;14 for the intervention group and &OV0556;0 for the control group. Direct healthcare costs per player were not significantly lower in the intervention group (difference, &OV0556;-44; 95% confidence interval [CI], -17 to 111). Indirect costs were lower in the intervention group (difference, &OV0556;-172; 95% CI, -352 to -28). The total cost per player was also lower in The11 group (difference, &OV0556;-201; 95% CI, -426 to -15). Direct health care costs per injured player were not significantly lower in the intervention group (difference, &OV0556;-76; 95% CI, -285 to 18). Indirect costs were lower in The11 group (difference, &OV0556;-288; 95% CI, -589 to -49). The total per injured player was, therefore, lower in The11 group (difference, &OV0556;-350; 95% CI, -733 to -51)., Conclusions: The injury prevention strategy, The11, did not lower the rate of injuries in adult male soccer players, but the costs per player and per injured player were lower in the intervention group.

Question: Is an injury prevention program consisting of 10 exercises designed to improve stability, muscle strength, co-ordination, and flexibility of the trunk, hip and leg muscles (known as The11) cost effective in adult male amateur soccer players?, Design: Cost-effectiveness analysis of a cluster-randomised controlled trial., Participants: 479 adult male amateur soccer players aged 18-40 years., Intervention: The intervention group was instructed to perform the exercises at each training session (2 to 3 sessions per week) during one soccer season. The exercises focus on core stability, eccentric training of thigh muscles, proprioceptive training, dynamic stabilisation, and plyometrics with straight leg alignment. The control group continued their usual warm-up., Outcome Measures: All injuries and costs associated with these injuries were compared between groups after bootstrapping (5000 replications)., Results: No significant differences in the proportion of injured players and injury rate were found between the two groups. Mean overall costs in the intervention group were €161 (SD 447) per athlete and €256 (SD 555) per injured athlete. Mean overall costs in the control group were €361 (SD 1529) per athlete and €606 (SD 1944) per injured athlete. Statistically significant cost differences in favour of the intervention group were found per player (mean difference €201, 95% CI 15 to 426) and per injured player (mean difference €350, 95% CI 51 to 733)., Conclusions: The exercises failed to significantly reduce the number of injuries in male amateur soccer players within one season, but did significantly reduce injury-related costs. The Ladies Gaelic Football Association has a playing population of 150,000 of which 33% are adults. A number of studies have been published on rates of injury among male athletes but none on female athletes in Gaelic football. A retrospective review of insurance claims, submitted under the Gaelic Athletic Association Player Insurance Injury Scheme. 405 injuries were recorded, 248 [107 (70%) male, 141 (58%) female] to the lower limb, 91 [33 (21%) male, 58 (23%) female] to the upper limb. The majority of lower limb injuries [56 (52%) male, 56 (40%) female] were to muscle. Almost a third of upper limb injuries were fractures [10 (30.3%) male, 33 (57%) female]. injuries/1000 hours playing was 8.25 for men and 2.4 for women. The injury rate in ladies Gaelic football was found to be significantly lower than in men's Gaelic football. Lower limb injuries accounted for the majority of injuries in both sports.

Background: In Switzerland, the national accident insurance company registered a total of 42 262 soccer injuries, resulting in costs of approximately 145 million Swiss francs (~US$130 million) in 2003. Research on injury prevention has shown that exercise-based programs can reduce the incidence of soccer injuries., Purpose: This study was conducted to assess the implementation and effects of a countrywide campaign to reduce the incidence of soccer injuries in Swiss amateur players., Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3., Methods: All coaches of the Schweizerischer Fussballverband (SFV) received information material and were instructed to implement the injury prevention program "The 11" in their training of amateur players. After the instruction, the coaches were asked to rate the quality and the feasibility of "The 11." Before the start of the intervention and 4 years later, a representative sample of about 1000 Swiss soccer coaches were interviewed about the frequency and characteristics of injuries in their teams. Teams that did or did not practice "The 11" were compared with respect to the incidence of soccer injuries., Results: A total of 5549 coaches for amateur players were instructed to perform "The 11" in the training with their teams. The ratings of the teaching session and the prevention program were overall very positive. In 2008, 80% of all SFV coaches knew the prevention campaign "The 11" and 57% performed the program or most parts of it. Teams performing "The 11" had an 11.5% lower incidence of match injuries and a 25.3% lower incidence of training injuries than other teams; noncontact injuries in particular were prevented by the program., Conclusion: "The 11" was successfully implemented in a countrywide campaign and proved effective in reducing soccer injuries in amateur players. An effect of the prevention program was also observed in the population-based insurance data and health-care costs.

Injury claims from an insurance company specializing in soccer coverage were reviewed for a 5-year period. A total of 8215 injury claims (3340 females, 4875 males) were divided into three categories: (1) all injury, (2) knee injury, and (3) ACL injury. Knee injuries accounted for 22% of all injuries (30% female, 16% male). ACL injury claims represented 31% of total knee injury claims (37% female, 24% males). The youngest ACL injury was age 5. The ratio of knee injury/all injury increased with age. Compared with males, females demonstrated a higher ratio of knee injury/all injury and a higher ratio of ACL injury/all injury. This study demonstrates that ACL injury occurs in skeletally immature soccer players and that females appear to have an increased risk of ACL injury and knee injury compared with males, even in the skeletally immature. Future research related to ACL injury in females will need to consider skeletally immature patients.

The analysis of 6153 accidents reported to the insurance company of the French Rhône-Alpes Soccer Association, for the 1980-81 season was undertaken, providing a survey of acute pathology in French soccer accidents and an estimation of the cost of this pathology to French society. Findings from this study include: injuries--ankle sprain is the most common; fractures prevail in the young players pathology; exposure--the average risk is one accident for 20 matches; the highest risk is for the senior category; collisions with opponents is the main cause of accidents; the first 5 minutes of the second half have a peak of accidents; the players exposure is roughly the same whatever their position on the ground; risk--winter should not increase the risk if the matches are played under good conditions; the risk is unevenly distributed according to the level of practice; cost--the cost for France over 1 year was estimated at US$20,000,000 and the total number of sick leave days at 2000 years; games with several accidents are very common in January and for the adult category. Consequently, tightening up the safety measures would be a very good investment.

The present investigation analyses all the acute soccer injuries recorded in Finland during one year (1980). The mean follow-up time was 18 months. The calculated yearly injury incidence was 5.8%. No significant difference in the injury incidences between the two sexes could be detected. A major part, 64% of the injuries were located in the lower extremities. Fractures and dislocations accounted for 11% of all injuries. One quarter of the injuries were classified as mild, causing a playing disability shorter than a week. Most injuries occurred through physical contact with another player (p less than 0.001). The calculated median time of absence from practice after injury was 4 weeks.
