The group 1 carcinogen, the liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini is the causative agent of opisthorchiasis and subsequent bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma; CCA), which is an important public health problem in Southeast Asia. Bithynia snails are known to be the sole intermediate host of O. viverrini, and distributed throughout endemic areas of opisthorchiasis. Since 2001, the genetic variation investigation of O. viverrini has progressively been investigated. Comprehensive genetic variation studies of O. viverrini and Bithynia snails were undertaken and consecutively published in 2007 by Saijuntha and colleagues. These studies provided genetic evidence that O. viverrini and Bithynia snails are both species complex with evidence of co-evolution. Later, several studies have provided data in support of this finding, and have continuously to date reinforced that both O. viverrini and Bithynia are species complexes. Moreover, studies have shown that genetic variation of O. viverrini is related to geographical, temporal, fish host species including geographical genetic variation of its snail host, Bithynia siamensis sensu lato. This is significant and important in our understanding of the evolution and phylogenetic relationships between species within the O. viverrini and Bithynia species complexes. A comprehensive knowledge of the systematics and population genetics of O. viverrini and Bithynia snails provides a sound basis to instigate and develop effective prevention and control programs targeting opisthorchiasis and CCA in the endemic areas of Southeast Asia. The freshwater snail Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos serves as the first intermediate host of liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini, a foodborne parasite, of which human infection has persisted in Southeast Asia for decades. The snail Filopaludina martensi martensi has been proposed as a biological control agent against B.s. goniomphalos, but knowledge on the snail ecology and population dynamics between the two species remains rudimentary. This study investigated selected abiotic and biotic factors influencing the distribution and abundance of B.s. goniomphalos and F.m. martensi. Water quality, soils, and snails were collected from 34 localities in Northeast Thailand. Soil properties and snail soft tissue elemental concentrations were analyzed. Experiments were performed to examine interspecific competition. Statistical analysis was conducted to explore the associations between water and soil properties and soft tissue elemental concentrations. The results showed that B.s. goniomphalos had the highest mean dominance in streams and red-yellow podzolic soils, while F.m. martensi snails preferred ponds and latosol soils. Negative correlation in species abundances was found between the two species. Interspecific competition was detected, with B.s. goniomphalos growth rates hampered by the presence of F.m. martensi. Despite the possibility of using F.m. martensi to control B.s. goniomphalos, B.s. goniomphalos exhibited a greater adaptability to different water and soil properties, suggesting that the species could colonize a wide range of environmental conditions. This study provides further insights into the ecology of the two snail species, underscoring the importance of considering abiotic factors when assessing the possible biological control agent to control O. viverrini transmission.

Opisthorchis viverrini is a fish-borne zoonotic trematode that causes significant public health problems in Southeast Asia. Its life cycle requires Bithynia snails as the first intermediate hosts, fish, and human and/or carnivore hosts. This study assessed impacts of land use practice for rice cultivation and seasonality on the transmission dynamics of O. viverrini in Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos in rice paddy field habitats. The transmission of O. viverrini cercariae in B. s. goniomphalos was monitored at monthly intervals over a 4-year period from January 2010 to December 2013. From a total of 59,727 snails examined by standard cercarial shedding, the prevalence of O. viverrini was 0.7% (range, 0.0-4.1%). The prevalence of O. viverrini infection in B. s. goniomphalos varied with the amount of rainfall, with peaks of infection occurring in the cool-dry season, that is, after each rainy season. A shift of peak prevalence from cool-dry to hot-dry season observed in 2013 was associated with the increase in preceding water irrigation to support the production of second annual rice crop. Significant positive correlations were found between the prevalence and intensity of cercarial infection and the size of snails. Our results revealed substantial variation between years so that to have a clear understanding of the population dynamics of this complex system, studies should be conducted over an extended period (> 1 year). Results from this study highlight that water irrigation schemes in rice paddy cultivation and seasonality have a significant effect on the prevalence of O. viverrini in B. s. goniomphalos .

The freshwater snail Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos sensu lato is widely distributed in the Lower Mekong Basin where it acts as the first intermediate host of the liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini, a group 1 carcinogen causing cholangiocarcinoma. This study explores the genetic structure and geographical variation of B. s. goniomphalos from eight previously studied catchments and eight new catchments. These catchments belong to five previously studied catchment systems and one new catchment system (Tonlesap) in the Lower Mekong Basin. Two new catchment systems, Prachin Buri and Bang Pakong from eastern and central Thailand, respectively, were also examined. We collected 289 specimens of B. s. goniomphalos from 15 previously studied localities and 18 new localities in Thailand, Lao PDR (People's Democratic Republic), and Cambodia. The mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 and 16S ribosomal DNA sequences were used to determine genetic variation. Classification of haplotypes specified 100 at the cox1 locus and 15 at the rrnL locus. Comparison between 16 catchment populations found significant genetic differences (Ф ST ) between all populations. The phylogenetic tree and haplotype network analyses classified B. s. goniomphalos into three evolutionary lineages (lineage I-III). Lineage I contained B. s. goniomphalos from the Mekong, Chi, Mun, Prachin Buri and Bang Pakong catchments in Thailand, including the Nam Ngum catchment in Lao PDR. Lineage II contained all specimens from the Tonlesap catchment, whereas lineage III contained specimens from the Mekong and Sea Bang Heang catchments in Thailand and Lao PDR, respectively. Interestingly, Bithynia siamensis siamensis was placed between lineages I and II of B. s. goniomphalos. This study supports the hypothesis that B. s. goniomphalos is a species complex containing at least three distinct evolutionary lineages in the Lower Mekong Basin, and that comprehensive molecular genetic analyses need to be conducted to further our understanding of the evolutionary and systematic relationships of these Bithynia snail taxa., (Copyright © 2019 Australian Society for Parasitology. Background: Like many trematodes of human health significance, the carcinogenic liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrini, is spread via fecal contamination of snail habitat. Methods for assessing snail exposure to fecal waste can improve our ability to identify snail infection hotspots and potential sources of snail infections. We evaluated the feasibility of culturing fecal indicator bacteria from Bithynia snail intestinal tubes as a method for assessing snail exposure to fecal waste. Snails and water samples were collected from a site with a historically high prevalence of O. viverrini infected snails ("hotspot" site) and a site with historically no infected snails ("non-hotspot" site) on two sampling days. Snails were tested for O. viverrini and a stratified random sample of snails from each site was selected for intestinal tube removal and culture of gut contents for the fecal indicator bacteria, Escherichia coli. Water samples were tested for E. coli and nearby households were surveyed to assess sources of fecal contamination., Results: At the hotspot site, 26 of 2833 Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos snails were infected with O. viverrini compared to 0 of 1421 snails at the non-hotspot site. A total of 186 snails were dissected and cultured. Escherichia coli were detected in the guts of 20% of uninfected snails, 4% of O. viverrini-positive snails and 8% of snails not examined for cercarial infection at the hotspot site. Only one of 75 snails from the non-hotspot site was positive for E. coli. Accounting for sampling weights, snails at the hotspot site were more likely to have gut E. coli than snails from the non-hotspot site. The concentration of fecal indicator bacteria in surface water was higher at the hotspot vs non-hotspot site on only the first sampling day., Conclusions: Fecal indicator bacteria can be detected in the intestinal tubes of Bithynia snails. The presence of fecal indicator bacteria in Bithynia snail guts may indicate risk of O. viverrini infection in snail populations. This method has the potential to aid in identifying locations and time windows of peak snail infection risk and may be applicable to other trematodes of human-health significance.

Opisthorchis viverrini (Ov) is one of the most important human parasitic diseases in Southeast Asia. Although the concept of connectivity is widely used to comprehend disease dispersal, knowledge of the influences of landscape connectivity on Ov transmission is still rudimentary. This study aimed to investigate the role of landscape connectivity in Ov transmission between the human and the first intermediate snail hosts. Fieldwork was conducted in three villages respectively in Kamalasai District, Kalasin Province, Phu Wiang District, Khon Kaen Province, and Nong Saeng District, Udon Thani Province. Bithynia snails were collected to examine parasitic infections, water samples were analyzed for fecal contamination, and locations of septic tanks and connections between habitat patches with observable water movement were surveyed. Euclidean distance, topological link and distance, and graph measures were employed to quantify the connectivity between human and snail habitats. The findings showed that snail patches with higher fecal contents were generally located nearer to septic tanks. The statistically significant results for the topological link and distance measures highlighted the importance of water in functionally facilitating Ov transmission. Graph measures revealed differences in landscape connectivity across the sites. The site with the largest landscape component size and the most mutually connected snail patches coincided with the presence of Ov parasite, reinforcing its higher risk for human to snail transmission. The site with the dissected landscape structure potentially limited the transmission. Unlabelled: Opisthorchis viverrini sensu lato is a food-borne trematode which is classified as a class 1 carcinogen, with infection potentially leading to cholangiocarcinoma. Snails of the genus Bithynia act as the first intermediate hosts and an amplifying point in the parasite life cycle. In order to investigate seasonal effect on transmission dynamics of O. viverrini in Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos, cercarial emergence and output profiles were monitored at different season. A total of 4533 snails originating from Sakon Nakhon Province, Thailand, collected during the three main seasons, were analyzed for O. viverrini s.l., Infection: Emergence of O. viverrini s.l. cercariae from snails was monitored daily from 06:00 to 18:00 h for seven consecutive days. The prevalence of infection in the snails was highest in the hot-dry season and declined in the rainy and cool-dry seasons. Peak cercarial emergence occurred between 08:00 and 10:00 h during the rainy and cool-dry seasons and between 10:00 and 12:00 h during the hot-dry season. The cercarial output was highest in the hot-dry season, similar to a previous study from Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR). Average cercarial output/snail in Thailand was higher than in Lao PDR. The number of cercariae emerging from the snails was strongly related to snail size, but the relationship between prevalence of infection and snail size differed between seasons. Observed discrepancies in the emergence patterns and per capita cercarial release may reflect differences in environmental, snail, and/or parasite factors particularly biological characteristics between the cryptic species of O. viverrini s.l. and B. s. goniomphalos from Thailand and Lao PDR.

Seasonal changes play roles in the transmission success of fish-borne zoonotic trematodes (FZT). This study examined the seasonal transmission patterns of Opisthorchis viverrini sensu lato (s.l.) and a virgulate cercaria (family Lecithodendriidae) in the snail intermediate host, Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos in northeast Thailand. Snail samples were collected monthly during the rainy, cool, and hot seasons during 2012-2013 to determine the prevalence and intensity of larval trematode infections. The prevalence of O. viverrini s.l. varied significantly with season, being 0.31%, 1.05%, and 0.37% in the rainy, cool, and hot seasons, respectively (P < 0.05). Similarly, the prevalence of virgulate cercariae was 3.11%, 6.80%, and 1.64% in the rainy, cool, and hot seasons, respectively (P < 0.05). The intensity of larval trematode infections also varied between seasons and peaked in the hot season (P < 0.05) in both species. The snails infected with O. viverrini s.l. were significantly smaller (P < 0.05) and those infected with virgulate cercariae were significantly larger (P < 0.05) than uninfected snails. Seasonal variation and the different sizes of B. s. goniomphalos parasitized by O. viverrini s.l. and virgulate trematodes indicate complex host-parasite interactions with important implications for the epidemiology of O. viverrini s.l., (© The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.)

Infection with the food-borne trematodiasis, liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini, is a major public health concern in Southeast Asia. While epidemiology and parasitic incidence in humans are well studied, ecological information on the O. viverrini intermediate hosts remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting the distribution and abundance of the first intermediate host, Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos snails. Water quality and snails were sampled in 31 sites in Muang District, Khon Kaen Province, Thailand from June 2012 to January 2013 to characterize the B.s. goniomphalos snail habitats. Species relative abundance and Shannon's diversity and evenness indices were employed to describe snail compositions and diversities across different habitat types. Statistical analyses were conducted to examine the extent to which the water quality variables and species interactions account for the relative abundance of B.s. goniomphalos snails. The results showed that the freshwater habitats of ponds, streams and rice paddies possessed significantly different abiotic water qualities, with water temperature and pH showing distinct statistical differences (P<0.05). Different habitats had different snail diversity and species evenness, with high B.s. goniomphalos snail abundance at rice paddy habitats. The differences in snail abundance might be due to the distinct sets of abiotic water qualities associated with each habitat types. The relative abundance of B.s. goniomphalos snails was found to be negatively correlated with that of Filopaludina martensi martensi snails (r=-0.46, P<0.05), underscoring the possible influence of species interaction on B.s. goniomphalos snail population. Field work observations revealed that rice planting seasons and irrigation could regulate snail population dynamics at rice paddy habitats. This study provides new ecological insights into the factors affecting Bithynia snail distribution and abundance. Background: Snail intermediate hosts play a pivotal role in maintaining the life cycles of trematodes, including Opisthorchis viverrini. We investigated the emergence patterns of O. viverrini cercariae infecting Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos at foci in an endemic area in Vientiane Province, Lao PDR., Findings: Samples of B. s. goniomphalos collected during the hot-dry, rainy and cool-dry seasons were examined for O. viverrini infection by cercarial shedding. Emergence of cercariae from O. viverrini-positive snails was monitored daily from 06:00-18:00 h for seven consecutive days at 2 hourly intervals. Snail infections varied seasonally, being highest in the cool-dry season. Peak cercarial emergence was not consistent in different seasons, occurring between 08.00-10.00 h during the hot-dry season and between 12.00-14.00 h during the rainy and cool-dry seasons. The cercarial output was highest in the hot-dry season. The prevalence of infection and the emergence of cercariae were strongly dependent on snail size., Conclusions: This study shows that size of snails and environmental factors (such as season) may affect the emergence patterns of cercariae of O. viverrini in snails. These results have both fundamental and applied implications for opisthorchiasis epidemiology and control.

Species and subspecies of the Oncomelania hupensis species complex are recognized as intermediate hosts of Schistosoma japonicum. Of these species and subspecies, O. quadrasi is distributed throughout the Philippines. This study used 12S ribosomal RNA sequences to explore the genetic structure of O. quadrasi populations in the Philippines. Three subspecies, O. h. hupensis, O. h. formosana, and O. h. chiui of this group were also examined. The phylogenetic tree and haplotypes network showed that O. quadrasi separated from the subspecies. Ten O. quadrasi haplotypes (Oq1-Oq10) clustered in relation to their geographic origin. Genetic differentiation (FST) and estimated gene flow (Nm) among populations showed significant differences, ranging from 0.556-1.000 to 0.00-0.74, respectively. Genetic differences among groups (FCT = 0.466), populations within a group (FSC = 0.727), and populations (FST = 0.854) were observed. Bithynia snails are important hosts of the human liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrini. Allozyme markers were used to examine genetic variation and the systematics of Bithynia snails from different geographical localities in Thailand and Lao PDR. Our results show that Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos contains two major evolutionary clades with at least nine morphologically similar but genetically distinct "cryptic" species (taxa). Clade A consists of snails from the Chi and the Mun River wetlands, Thailand and clade B consists of snails from the Nam Ngum River wetland, Lao PDR, as well as snails from some localities in the Songkram River wetland, Thailand. There is an association between O. viverrini cryptic taxa with B. s. goniomphalos cryptic taxa within the defined wetlands. Bithynia species are the critical amplifying component of O. viverrini and they control transmission from humans to fish second intermediate hosts. These findings are particularly important for understanding the transmission dynamics of O. viverrini. They are, in addition, a link in the life cycle of O. viverrini which can be used for developing and implementing programs to eliminate and control opisthorchiasis and its associated cholangiocarcinoma., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Opisthorchiasis, together with its associated cholangiocarcinoma, is one of the most important human parasitic diseases on continental Southeast Asia. A great deal of epidemiological data from humans is available on this disease, particularly from the northeast of Thailand, however, only limited information is available on those aspects of the life cycle relating to its Bithynia (Gastropoda) and cyprinid fish intermediate hosts. Here we review the information which is available on the Bithynia hosts of Opisthorchis viverrini. Only one major ecological study has been carried out at one site on a single species of Bithynia. We show not only that detailed ecological studies are required to clarify the epidemiology of opisthorchiasis, but also that the taxonomic status of the Bithynia species transmitting O. viverrini requires clarification., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. The carcinogenic liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrini, requires Bithynia snail intermediate hosts in its life cycle. However, the prevalence of O. viverrini in snail intermediate hosts is typically low (< 1%). Here, we examined B. siamensis goniomphalos from 48 localities in Thailand and The Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) and reported high-prevalence levels of O. viverrini. The highest-prevalence levels per locality were 6.93% (mean = 3.04%) in Thailand and 8.37% (mean = 2.01%) in Lao PDR; 4 of 13 localities examined showed prevalence higher than any prevalence previously recorded. The number of cercariae infecting snails and their prevalence were positively correlated with the size of the snails. High prevalence occurred in the Songkram River wetland (Thailand) and the Nam Ngum River wetland (Lao PDR). Our results show that transmission of O. viverrini from humans as well as animal reservoir hosts to snail intermediate hosts is ongoing and potentially increasing in endemic areas across Thailand and Lao PDR.

We echo the viewpoints presented in the recent editorials and forums in ecohealth in 2009 and 2010 that understanding the links between water and health using biogeography can provide insights into the patterns of and the processes that give rise to the distribution of disease prevalence. In particular, we underscore the need to integrate disease ecology and biogeography using landscape ecological approaches. We use opisthorchiasis, a major public health problem in Southeast Asia, to illustrate our opinions.

Snails are the critical amplifying hosts of the liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini, the causative agent of hepatobiliary disease and cholangiocarcinoma in the Mekong area of Southeast Asia. Bithynia funiculata, B. siamensis goniomphalos and B. s. siamensis are the first intermediate hosts of O. viverrini in Thailand. Morphological similarity between Bithynia species and subspecies creates problems for their taxonomic identification and an understanding of Bithynia systematics. In this study, multilocus enzyme electrophoresis (MEE) was applied to define genetic markers that could prove useful for investigating the systematics and population genetics of this genus in Thailand. Of the 34 enzymes examined, 20 encoding a presumptive 24 loci showed sufficient staining intensity and resolution for genetic interpretation. Of these, three loci were monomorphic and eight loci were diagnostic among the three Bithynia taxa. The remaining 13 loci were diagnostic between combinations of the three taxa. Fixed genetic differences were detected at 67-73% of loci among these taxa which in turn differed from a closely related species, Hydrobioides nassa, at 88% of loci. Seventy three percent fixed genetic differences were detected between B. funiculata and the two sub-species B. s. siamensis and B. s goniomphalos. Our data reveals similarly large genetic divergence, 67% fixed genetic differences, between B. s. siamensis and B. s. goniomphalos, which may well represent different species rather than subspecies as currently defined. Multilocus enzyme electrophoresis (MEE) and DNA sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) gene were used to genetically compare four species of echinostomes of human health importance. Fixed genetic differences among adults of Echinostoma revolutum, Echinostoma malayanum, Echinoparyphium recurvatum and Hypoderaeum conoideum were detected at 51-75% of the enzyme loci examined, while interspecific differences in CO1 sequence were detected at 16-32 (8-16%) of the 205 alignment positions. The results of the MEE analyses also revealed fixed genetic differences between E. revolutum from Thailand and Lao PDR at five (19%) of 27 loci, which could either represent genetic variation between geographically separated populations of a single species, or the existence of a cryptic (i.e. genetically distinct but morphologically similar) species. However, there was no support for the existence of cryptic species within E. revolutum based on the CO1 sequence between the two geographical areas sampled. Genetic variation in CO1 sequence was also detected among E. malayanum from three different species of snail intermediate host. Separate phylogenetic analyses of the MEE and DNA sequence data revealed that the two species of Echinostoma (E. revolutum and E. malayanum) did not form a monophyletic clade. These results, together with the large number of morphologically similar species with inadequate descriptions, poor specific diagnoses and extensive synonymy, suggest that the morphological characters used for species taxonomy of echinostomes in South-East Asia should be reconsidered according to the concordance of biology, morphology and molecular classification., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier B.V. Prevalences and intensity of infection with Angiostrongylus cantonensis third stage larvae were examined in mollusks to determine whether they are potential intermediate hosts in eight provinces, northeast Thailand. Mollusk samples were collected from 24 reservoirs (3 reservoirs/province) in close to human cases during the previous year. Six out of 24 localities and 9 (3 new record species) out of 27 species were found with the infection. The highest intensity in infected species was found to be only one or two snails, whereas the majority had very low or no infection. The highest density was found in Pila pesmei and the lowest in Pila polita. The edible snails, P. polita, P. pesmei, and Hemiplecta distincta have the potential to transmit A. cantonensis to man. The varying density levels of larvae in infected snails may reflect observed variation in symptoms of people who traditionally eat a raw snail dish.

Six groups (15 snails/group) of Pomacea canaliculata and Pila polita were infected orally with 0 (control), 200, 400, 800, 1600 and 3200 first-stage Angiostrongylus cantonensis larvae (L1). The respective mean+/-SD third stage larvae (L3) worm recovery 1-month post-infection (p.i.) for P. canaliculata was 0, 1.4+/-5.42 (0.7%), 0.13+/-0.35 (0.03%), 0.07+/-0.26 (0.009%), 0.07+/-0.26 (0.004%), 0, and for P. polita 0, 64.33+/-21.38 (32.25%), 115.36+/-36.82 (28.93%), 265.33+/-90.01 (33.27%), 471.33+/-92.98 (29.60%) and 849.00+/-243.23 (26.61%). The susceptibility of A. cantonensis in P. polita was dose-dependent (p<0.001). In the three groups (nine snails/group) of P. polita given 500 L1, we studied the distribution of L3 in the internal organs (i.e., foot, head+esophagus, kidney, albumin gland, mantle, intestine, digestive gland) and found the highest density after 1, 2 and 3 months p.i. in the mantle at 29.37%, 31.09% and 37.45%. The infection rate in P. canaliculata was too low to study distribution rates.

The food-borne trematodes, Opisthorchis viverrini, O. felineus and Clonorchis sinensis, have long been recognized as the cause of major human health problems, with an estimated 40 million infected persons. Of the three species of liver fluke, only O. viverrini is classified as a type 1 carcinogen because of its role as an initiator of chronic inflammation and the subsequent development of cholangiocarcinoma. At present, there are no techniques for the early diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma and it is fatal for most patients. There is considerable variation in parasite prevalence and disease presentation in different geographical areas, the latter of which may be associated with genetic differences among parasites. In the present study, multilocus enzyme electrophoresis was used to provide a comprehensive genetic characterization of O. viverrini from different geographical localities in Thailand and the Peoples' Democratic Republic of Laos. Parasites from different localities were compared genetically at 32 enzyme loci. The results of the genetic analyses are sufficient to reject the null hypothesis that O. viverrini represents a single species. Therefore, O. viverrini consists of at least two genetically distinct, yet morphologically similar (i.e. cryptic) species. Moreover, there was also separation of the different populations of snails (i.e. the first intermediate hosts) into two distinct genetic groups that corresponded with the delineation of O. viverrini into two species. This suggests that there may be a history of co-evolution in this host-parasite lineage. Additionally, five distinct genetic groups of parasites were detected, each of which occurred within a different and independent river wetland system. Our findings have major implications for the implementation of effective control and surveillance programs targeted to these medically important food-borne parasites.

Previous molecular genetic analyses indicate that Opisthorchis viverrini is a complex of at least 2 cryptic species in Thailand and the Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR). Opisthorchis viverrini sensu lato (s.l.) populations can be divided into 6 genetic groups, which correlate with 5 different river wetlands systems. The present study examines the infectivity, growth, fecundity, and body size of O. viverrini s.l. isolates from these systems. Worm recovery was lowest in the Songkhram River, which differed significantly from all other wetland systems. In addition, the Chi River and Nam Ngum River populations also differed significantly. A similar pattern was found for fecundity. These results support the genetic/molecular data indicating a subdivision of O. viverrini populations on the basis of watershed and that propose the existence of cryptic species in Thailand and the Lao PDR.
