The article presents a study on the production of glycolipid biosurfactants, mannosylerythritol lipids (MELs), from glucose and sucrose without vegetable oil. It examines the production of MEL-A, MEL-B, and MEL-C with glucose and sucrose from various MEL producers such as Pseudozyma Antarctica JCM 10317. Moreover, it analyzes the sufficient production of MEL-B from sucrose as sole carbon source by Ustilago scitaminea, a smut fungus.

The article presents a study that focuses on the efficiency of smut fungus Ustilafo scitaminea NBRC 32730 to produce glycolipid biosurfacants and mannosylerythritol lipids (MEL) from sucrose in the culture medium. It says that the strains were cultured in a test tube to approximating the formation of MEL and that silica gel were applied to purify the main glycolipid. It further focuses on fatty acid profile of the MEL-B and the molecular weights of glycolipids.
