There is evidence that global tobacco smoking control policies contribute to decrease the prevalence of smoking among populations, so there is a need to effectively implement different measures in a coordinated way. The plain packaging and labelling of tobacco products is one of the measures proposed by the World Health Organisation Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. At the moment, leading countries are implementing this tobacco control measure, which involves a plain packaging for all tobacco products, i.e., the absence of any promotional or communication tool in the packaging, except the name of the brand, appearing with a standardised font, size, colour and placing in the pack. Australia was the first country to implement this measure in 2012 and recently other countries are legislating and approving it. In Spain, tobacco legislation (2005 and 2010), was an important advance in tobacco control policies. The introduction of plain packaging in Spain would mean the next step in the development of a global strategy for fighting this significant health problem. The aim of this article is to synthesise in a structured manner the role that the packaging of tobacco products has within marketing and communication strategies, as well as to describe the potential effects that the plain packaging has on some aspects of smoking behaviour, according to current literature., (Copyright © 2016 SESPAS. Objective: it is known that very few women who continue to smoke at the time of delivery stop smoking during the postpartum period. Discovering strategies that can be incorporated during pregnancy to help improve women's participation in postpartum interventions could increase the number of women non-smokers. The aim of this study is to identify the predictors of participation by pregnant women smokers in a postpartum smoking cessation intervention., Design: a cross-sectional study was carried out amongst women smokers who had attended to give birth., Setting: women attended the University Clinical Hospital 'Lozano Blesa' of Zaragoza (Spain) who were smokers before pregnancy and reported at delivery to have continued smoking during pregnancy were eligible and were invited to participate in the study., Findings: 2044 women completed the questionnaire 24 hours after giving birth. The smoking prevalence during pregnancy was 18.2% (n=372) and 62.9% of them (n=234) participated. The logistic regression model provided five significant predictors for women who participated: intention to breast feed, having less of an urge to smoke the first cigarette of the day before pregnancy, having reduced consumption during pregnancy by 50% or more, having received advice and being willing to get help., Conclusions and Implications for the Practice: the factors associated with participation show aspects that can be modified by maternal and child health professionals. Advice to stop smoking, received during pregnancy, encourages participation in a postpartum intervention. From the point of view of public health, the huge increase in the prevalence of smoking women poses the need to take advantage of the pregnancy as an opportunity for giving up smoking definitely. It would be necessary to identify what programmes of smoking cessation have better results in pregnant women and to know how to motivate health professionals to implement them., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Later stages of the smoking epidemic show that social and gender inequalities increase tobacco use among women and more deprived social groups. Given that smoking prevalence among women is increasing adding gender perspective in the design of prevention and tobacco control policies is a priority. After a brief description of the overall frame of tobacco control, different policies including minimum strategies that should incorporate gender specific aspects are described. Among them, empowerment measures addressed to reduce gender inequities are included; legislative measures; health care measures; and lastly measures related to research and evaluation aiming to add gender perspective in tobacco policy implementation and analysis.

The smoking control policies recommended by the World Health Organisation have achieved a slight decrease in smoking prevalence in the developed countries, although associated mortality is still very high. The use of tobacco products other than cigarettes and even medicinal nicotine (known as nicotine replacement therapy (NRT)) has been proposed as a risk reduction strategy. Among the tobacco products with less individual risk than cigarettes would be any type of tobacco without smoke (smokeless) with a low content in nitrosamines and modified cigarettes; both forms included under the PREP (Potentially Reduced Exposure Products) concept. The idea would be to promote these products among those who cannot quit smoking or wish to reduce their risk without giving up nicotine intake. The possible effects of risk reduction strategies, including PREP, on the decreased prevalence and morbidity and mortality are reviewed, and the possible implications that this measure could have in our country are analysed. Tobacco control measures in Spain are recent and still insufficient. Therefore, the current priority in Spain is the development of policies of control that have shown to more than effective. The marketing and advertising of new tobacco products, even with reduced potential risk, seems more a serious threat than an opportunity for the development of smoking control policies.

Objectives: Awareness of the health risks of passive smoking for non-smokers has led to the development of workplace interventions for smokers, although they are still few in our setting. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of an anti-smoking program among the workers of a company, in function of changes in the pre- and post-intervention prevalence of smoking in the study population., Method: A pre-intervention questionnaire on smoking (prevalence and attitudes) was administered at a company with 640 employees (92% men, 8% women). An anti-smoking program was carried out inside the company during working hours over the next nine months. The questionnaire was then repeated (post-intervention) in order to evaluate its efficacy based on changes. For employees who answered both questionnaires, paired variables were analyzed., Results: The pre-intervention questionnaire was answered by 388 employees (60%), 357 men (92%) and 31 women (8%); their mean age was 48.4 years (SD 9.36). The prevalence of smoking was 55%, including daily smokers, sporadic smokers and others. The mean number of cigarettes per day was 17.86 (SD 2.45). The mean level of nicotine dependence measured by the Fagerström test was 3.3 (SD 2.8) out of 10. The post-intervention questionnaire was answered by 206 employees (32%). Among employees who answered both questionnaires (83), analysis of paired data showed a decrease in the prevalence of smoking of 4% and in the number of cigarettes per day from 17.4 (pre-intervention) to 16.4 (post-intervention). The differences were not statistically significant., Conclusions: Although the workplace is an appropriate setting for anti-smoking interventions that would contribute to improving the health of smokers, such programs are currently underutilized.
