This paper introduces a robust fault-tolerant control (FTC) for a five-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (FPPMSM) affected by the third harmonic under an open-circuit fault (OCF). Using field-oriented control, the proposed method demonstrates how to achieve optimal current references for torque decoupling under healthy and faulty conditions. The proposed speed and current loop controllers are based on sliding mode control (SMC), with a nonlinear extended state observer (NESO) that utilizes a hyperbolic tangent function (HTF) to provide feed-forward compensation to the controllers. The results analysis confirmed that the proposed control could enhance the tracking accuracy and robustness to disturbances under various conditions, substantially reducing torque ripples and speed fluctuations under a fault. This study presents a novel image-based visual servoing fault-tolerant control strategy aimed at ensuring the successful completion of visual servoing tasks despite the presence of robotic arm actuator faults. Initially, a depth-independent image-based visual servoing model is established to mitigate the effects of inaccurate camera parameters and missing depth information on the system. Additionally, a robotic arm dynamic model is constructed, which simultaneously considers both multiplicative and additive actuator faults. Subsequently, model uncertainties, unknown disturbances, and coupled actuator faults are consolidated as centralized uncertainties, and an iterative learning fault observer is designed to estimate them. Based on this, suitable sliding surfaces and control laws are developed within the super-twisting sliding mode visual servo controller to rapidly reduce control deviation to near zero and circumvent the chattering phenomenon typically observed in traditional sliding mode control. Finally, through comparative simulation between different control strategies, the proposed method is shown to effectively counteract the effect of actuator faults and exhibit robust performance. This paper proposes a fault‐tolerant control strategy for the air path system of a turbocharged diesel engine, considering the simultaneous presence of matched and mismatched external disturbances, additive and loss of effectiveness fault modes in the EGR and VGT subsystems. Firstly, a disturbance observer based on H∞$$ {H}_{\infty } $$ theory is designed for estimating additive faults and external disturbances, and the upper bound of observation error is obtained. Based on the observation information, an integral sliding mode surface is designed, and the effectiveness of the sliding mode surface is analyzed. For the loss of effectiveness faults in the actuators, a novel adaptive update sliding mode controller is designed. Closed-loop kinematics of a dual-arm robot (DAR) often induces motion conflict. Control formulation is increasingly difficult in face of actuator failures. This article presents a new approach for fault-tolerant control of DARs based on advanced sliding mode control. A comprehensive fractional-order model is proposed taking nonlinear viscous and viscoelastic friction at the joints into account. Using integral fast terminal sliding mode control and fractional calculus, we develop two robust controllers for robots subject to motor faults, parametric uncertainties, and disturbances. Their merits rest with their strong robustness, speedy finite-time convergence, shortened reaching phase, and flexible selection of derivative orders. To avoid the need for full knowledge of faults, robot parameters, and disturbances, two versions of the proposed approach, namely adaptive integral fractional-order fast terminal sliding mode control, are developed. Here, an adaptation mechanism is equipped for estimating a common representative of individual uncertainties. Simulation and experiment are provided along with an extensive comparison with existing approaches. The results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed control technique. In this paper, the adaptive finite-time fault-tolerant control (FTC) problem is investigated for uncertain nonlinear strict-feedback systems. The strict-feedback nonlinear system considered in this paper contains unknown nonlinear dynamics and actuator faults (both lock-in-place and loss of effectiveness). In this control process, adaptive laws are used to approximate unknown nonlinear functions. By using the sliding mode control technique and combining it with the adaptive backstepping control design, an adaptive terminal sliding mode FTC scheme is proposed. It is proved that the closed-loop system is finite-time stable and that the system output can track a given reference signal. This paper addresses the problem of achieving finite‐time fault‐tolerant consensus control for a class of non‐linear fractional‐order multi‐agent systems (NFO‐MAS) using finite‐time fault detection and estimation, as well as a finite‐time state observer. To achieve this, a specific lemma is utilized to rewrite the high‐order model of NFO‐MAS as a lower‐order NFO unique system. By employing new identification rules and introducing a fault estimation method, both the state variables and faults of the agents are estimated within a finite time. Subsequently, a finite‐time sliding mode control law is designed based on the estimated fault and the state variables obtained from the proposed finite‐time observer to achieve consensus within a finite time for the fractional‐order non‐linear MAS. The stability of the fault estimation, state observer, and consensus controller is proven using the finite‐time Lyapunov theory. In order to address the problem that the main drive system of rolling mill is easily affected by the impact of biting steel, and considering the nonlinear friction damping and the external perturbations of the main drive system of rolling mill during the rolling process, a fault model of the main drive system of rolling mill is established, and a fault diagnosis and fault tolerance control method of the main drive system of rolling mill based on the nonlinear sliding-mode observer is proposed. In order to suppress the influence of external perturbations on fault diagnosis, a nonlinear sliding-mode observer is constructed for fault diagnosis and fault reconfiguration of the system, and the robustness of the observer to fault reconfiguration is improved by using the sliding-mode control rate v , and the stability of the designed nonlinear sliding-mode observer is proved using Lyapunov's stability theorem. In order to ensure that the system can operate normally even after a fault occurs, a reference model is designed, and a new controller is redesigned for fault-tolerant control of the system by adding a fault compensation term to the original control scheme using fault estimation information. Through the simulation study of the main drive system of stand F4 of 2030 mm cold rolling mill, it is verified that the observer can accurately track the system state with an angular velocity error of 2.45% and detect and estimate the main drive system failure of rolling mill with an estimation error of no more than 0.04% after a fault occurs; the fault-tolerant control of the main drive system of rolling mill is carried out by using the fault information to restore the system to its normal state, and the angular velocity error is 1.89%. In this article, a robust fault-tolerant sliding mode controller is proposed for a class of non-homogeneous Euler–Bernoulli beams which contains controller time-varying fault, external unknown spatiotemporally varying disturbance, and parametric uncertainties. Furthermore, to reduce the number of correspondence between the controller and the actuator, two event-triggered mechanisms are incorporated into the controller design. The sliding surface designed ensures that the system is uniformly ultimately bounded and robust to the parameter uncertainties in model. In addition, the Euler–Bernoulli beam can be used as a model for the flexible wind turbine tower. Numerical simulations are shown to illustrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed control method. The simulation results show that in the presence of unknown faults and parametric uncertainties, the proposed controller can still effectively suppress the vibration of the tower, while the event-triggered mechanism significantly reduces the communications burden. This article introduces a new fault-tolerant control method based on type-2 fuzzy systems with PID fast terminal sliding mode control. By integrating the advantages of proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control with fast terminal sliding mode (FTSM) control, a novel proportional-integral-derivative fast terminal sliding mode (PID-FTSM) is developed to accelerate convergence and decrease steady-state error. To provide outstanding fault tolerant control performance and approximation of system uncertainties, a type-2 fuzzy logical switching approach law eliminates the chattering phenomenon and reduce the need of prior knowledge without affecting the system's robustness. This paper addresses the issues of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and fault-tolerant control in tidal steam turbines under complex marine environments. In order to solve the conflicting problems in the existing sliding mode control between dynamic performance and chatter reduction as well as the use of fault estimation link in the fault-tolerant control, which increases the system complexity, an adaptive non-singular fast terminal sliding mode and adaptive robust fault tolerance method (ANFTSMC-ARC) is proposed. First, a speed controller equipped with adaptive non-singular fast terminal sliding mode control (ANFTSMC) is designed to improve the power capture efficiency under swell disturbances. This design achieves fast convergence and circumvents the singularity problem. Then, a new reach law is proposed based on the adaptive hybrid exponential reaching law (AHERL), which ensures high tracking performance while reducing chattering. In addition, considering that the hydraulic pitch system is prone to failure, a fault-tolerant controller with automatically adjustable gain is designed under the adaptive robust scheme. With the help of Lyapunov theory, the closed-loop system is proved to be uniform and ultimately bounded. The manuscript proposes a data-based integral terminal sliding mode control approach to determine fault-tolerant control (FTC) concerning a class of discrete-time nonlinear systems (DTNS) containing sensor fault. The proposed scheme can be readily implemented because it purely utilizes the input and output data of the system to employ a model called the compact form dynamic linearization (CFDL) data model, while the one-step forward approximator is employed to estimate the fault function term in the system. Moreover, the fault diagnosis mechanism utilizes a time-varying threshold with prescribed performance to judge whether the fault occurs. Hence, the problem of a standard fixed threshold used at the start-up state of the control system is resolved. Then, the discrete-time integral terminal sliding mode fault-tolerant control (DITSM-FTC) method is proposed. Concurrently, the sturdiness of the proposed method is assured by hypothetical investigation. When compared with the literature, the fundamental features of the proposed method are presented as follows: (1) the problem pertinent to fault utilizing a data-driven model is resolved; (2) a fault diagnosis mechanism with prescribed performance is proposed, and (3) one step forward approximator is utilized to devise an estimation approach of fault detection. This paper provided a robust strategy for controlling nonlinear interconnected large-scale systems subject to a sensor fault. The inherent challenge in controlling such systems is to sustain robust closed-loop stability and performance in nonlinear interactions, faults, and exogenous inputs. A new closed-loop structure has been devised to tackle this challenge by integrating the sliding mode controller with the unknown input observer. By exploiting the decoupling capability of the controller and observer, this integration ensures the robustness of the closed-loop system against the simultaneous effect of interaction, fault, and disturbance. In this context, the unknown input observer has been constructed to supply the controller with an accurate sensor fault assessment despite additional unknown inputs. A novel approach is proposed for designing a decentralized fault-tolerant control system that utilizes sliding mode control and proportional-integral-derivative controller tuning via a bacterial foraging optimization algorithm to compensate for the fault effect, leading to a robust output performance. The observer and controller gains are accomplished by utilizing the H∞ performance and linear matrix inequality formulation. The Lyapunov technique is used to demonstrate stability. This paper introduces a novel method for controlling a surface permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) during demagnetization fault conditions. An adaptive sliding mode fault‐tolerant control strategy is proposed for a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle in this article to accommodate actuator faults and model uncertainties. First, a new reaching law is proposed, with which a sliding mode control (SMC) law is constructed. The proposed reaching law is made up of a sliding variable and the distance between it and a designated boundary layer, and it can effectively suppress the unexpected control chattering while preserving the necessary system tracking performance. Then, an adaptive SMC scheme is proposed to further solve the fault and uncertainty compensation problem. The proposed adaptation law helps to prevent overestimation of the adaptive control parameters, as well as avoiding control chattering. Finally, a number of comparative simulation tests are carried out to validate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed control strategy. In this article, we investigate a fault‐tolerant control (FTC) for a class of quadrotors with variable mass and actuator faults. Firstly, a mathematical model of quadrotors considered variable‐mass factor is established based on Euler Newton's formula. Secondly, an adaptive estimation algorithm based on a fault observer is designed to achieve the estimations of variable mass and actuator fault, respectively. With the aim of obtaining satisfactory trajectory tracking performance, utilizing the variable mass estimation, a nonsingular terminal sliding mode controller is designed to track desired position. Meanwhile, utilizing the information of actuator fault estimation, an integral sliding mode controller is designed to track desired attitude. Finally, by comparison with the existing sliding mode control (SMC) and other FTC algorithm, the results show that the proposed FTC method has better tracking performance in the case of variable mass, fault and disturbance. Aiming at the perturbation of motion capability and the deviation of end effector from its desired trajectory caused by joint effectiveness partial loss failure, a fault-tolerant control strategy considering motion capability optimization is proposed to ensure that the faulty space manipulator can carry on-orbit operation tasks. Firstly, the joint effectiveness partial loss failure model is established, and the kinematic and dynamic model of the faulty manipulator is established based on the failure model. The kinematic and dynamic coupling relationship of the faulty manipulator is also analyzed. Then based on sliding mode control, the fault-tolerant control strategy that ensures the end effector trajectory tracking and base orientation deflection attenuation is designed. Meanwhile, the motion capability optimization model is designed based on the redundancy characteristic of the manipulator and combined with the fault-tolerant control system. This combined system can realize end effector trajectory tracking, base orientation deflection attenuation, and motion capability optimization at the same time. Finally, simulation experiment is carried out to verify the proposed fault-tolerant control strategy for the faulty manipulator. The result shows that the proposed fault-tolerant control strategy can realize end effector trajectory tracking, base orientation deflection attenuation, and motion capability optimization with high control accuracy, high convergence rate, and significant motion capability optimization effect. For both joint velocity partial loss and joint torque partial loss failure, the duration of convergence is less than 0.5 s, the steady-state error is less than 1 × 10 - 4 m for end effector position and less than 1 × 10 - 5 degree for base orientation deflection, and the motion capability indexes have been raised by over 40%. This paper investigates the fault‐tolerant control problem for a dual‐redundant hydraulic actuation system on active/active (A/A) mode subject to servovalve leakage and disturbances. The change in system dynamics caused by servovalve leakage is modeled as an additive time‐varying fault. Then, an enhanced iterative learning observer with improved robustness against abrupt unknown input is designed for fault reconstruction. In view of the high relative degree of the plant, an auxiliary variable is adopted to facilitate the controller design. Combined with the fault reconstruction results, an adaptive continuous nonsingular fast terminal sliding mode (NFTSM) fault‐tolerant controller is developed, in which an NFTSM manifold is constructed based on the auxiliary variable to achieve fast convergence of trajectory tracking errors. An adaptive continuous reaching law with less chattering is designed to compensate for the influence of the lumped disturbance. Lyapunov stability analysis demonstrates that this method can ensure finite‐time convergence of sliding variable and can guarantee the trajectory tracking errors converge to the neighborhood of the origin exponentially. Ocean currents, mechanical collisions and electronic damage can cause faults in an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), including sensors and thrusters. For such problems, this paper designs a fault-tolerant controller that is independent of the results of the fault diagnosis. An adaptive reaching law is developed based on sliding mode control to shorten convergence times. For the chattering phenomenon, a weighted hyperbolic tangent function is adopted instead of the traditional sign function in sliding mode control. Simulations are carried out when thruster and sensor fail under the condition of ocean current disturbance, model uncertainty and sensor noise. Comparative simulation results show that the proposed method can accelerate the convergence speed of the state point and improve the trajectory tracking effect of the AUV. This article studies the fault‐tolerant control for linear systems with disturbances through sliding mode scheme. Compared with the existing results, by means of a nonlinear sliding function with an exponential term, a reduced‐order sliding motion can be obtained while the reaching phase of conventional sliding mode control is eliminated. On the other side, with the help of an exponentially decaying barrier Lyapunov functions, a continuous sliding mode algorithm is established. Within the proposed framework, the trajectories of closed‐loop systems can be forced to a prescribed practical sliding surface, and then, both the transient as well as steady‐state performances are guaranteed despite the occurrence of abrupt actuator faults. Under the Lyapunov direct method, a sufficient condition is derived such that the sliding motion is uniformly bounded with time‐varying performance constraints. Optimal engine torque management, a fundamental objective, depends predominantly on engine speed tracking performance. It ensures to attain desired speed profile in the presence of uncertainties, disturbances and malfunctions. On the other hand, certain requirements such as emissions control, fuel efficiency and drivability are degraded in case of poor speed tracking. Furthermore, constraints on engine speed tracking performance are even more stringent for hybrid power-train architecture as crankshaft speed and engine torque are the basic variables for coordinated control. Speed tracking is also considered essential for gear shift control of the automatic transmission. In this research work, a framework for fault-tolerant speed tracking of the gasoline engine is proposed using the First Principle-based Engine Model (FPEM). A high-fidelity direct relationship between fuel injection input and engine speed is derived by the transformation of FPEM. Fault is induced in the fuel injection subsystem to generate the torque imbalance. Using the proposed framework, a second-order sliding mode-based control technique is applied to track desired speed profile by mitigating the faults in the fuel injection subsystem. Multistack fuel cell systems (MFCS) are promising developments of fuel cell technology. For MFCS, faults affect durability and stability, and appropriate fault diagnosis methods and control strategies need to be proposed for different multistack structures. Herein, the integrated MFCS thermal management subsystem (TMS), which is based on the optimized split‐stack approach, is first studied, and its possible sensor and actuator faults are analyzed. The sensor fault signal is corrected based on the unscented Kalman filter (UKF), the controller design under the hardware in the loop platform is carried out, and an active fault‐tolerant control (FTC) strategy based on sliding mode control is deployed for the TMS to enable it to recover its performance quickly and effectively in case of faults. The results show that the estimated values are closer to the true values after using the UKF on the sensor signals, avoiding the impact of sensor faults on the system performance. Under New European Driving Cycle dynamic conditions, the FTC controller also exhibits better control compared to the conventional proportional–integral controller, with smaller maximum overshoot and shorter system recovery and stabilization time in the event of a TMS fault, mitigating the impact of system fault on performance. The article concentrates on the finite-time fault-tolerant control for a class of nonstrict-feedback nonlinear systems subject to uncertain control gains and multiple actuator faults. First, neural networks are employed to approximate system uncertainties. By means of a vital structural attribute of neural networks, algebraic loop problem in standard backstepping control design is excluded. Then, a sliding manifold with exponential monotonic attenuation is introduced to ensure chattering-free response and robust performance. Besides, the lumped uncertainty of multiple faulty actuators is handled via applying Nussbaum gain technique and a modified Nussbaum boundedness criterion. To circumvent the issue of "complexity explosion", a second-order command filter is introduced in every step of recursive control design. Through the proposed adaptive finite-time fault-tolerant control scheme, the influence of actuator faults can be compensated effectively, and the tracking error converges into an arbitrarily small residuum in finite time. Meanwhile, the disc domain of convergent error as well as the upper bound of settling time can be estimated. Finally, two simulations concerned with practical models are discussed. A hierarchical controller is proposed for achieving high‐accuracy control and the dynamic balance with the presence of multiple faults of actuator, the external disturbance, and the model uncertainties in multicylinder hydraulic press machine (MCHPM). The method divides the controller design into three steps: Virtual fault‐tolerant control law, control allocation algorithm, and actuator control law, which are progressive. First, to precisely compensate the lumped disturbances including the multiple faults of actuator, the external disturbance, and the model uncertainties, a disturbance observer (DO) is developed. By combining the observer with the sliding mode control (SMC), a virtual fault‐tolerant control law is designed. Second, a highly integrated control allocation algorithm for the virtual fault‐tolerant control law is proposed to get the desired driving force, taking into account dynamic control allocation (DCA), multiobjective optimization (MOO) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) simultaneously. Third, taking the driving force obtained from above control allocation algorithm as the desired target, the control law of each cylinder is calculated. The global stability for the whole system is proved by the Lyapunov theory. In order to improve the anti-disturbance ability and reduce the sensitivity to faults for the quadrotor UAV, the robust sliding mode adaptive control strategy based on iterative learning is designed in this paper. Firstly, the dynamic model of the quadrotor UAV is established. Secondly, the iterative learning observer is designed to track the states of the UAV system, and the convergence analysis of the observer is given. In our study, an adaptive sliding mode fault-tolerant control scheme is proposed for attitude tracking of spacecraft with actuator faults. Two-power reaching laws are used for sliding mode control, which are designed not only to solve the chattering problem of the sliding mode variables near the sliding mode surface, but also to directly obtain more accurate convergence time expression of the sliding mode variables. At the same time, a redundant actuator configuration of spacecraft is considered especially, and it improves the fault tolerance of the system. Moreover, for unknown items in the system, an adaptive control technique is introduced to approximate them. Our proposed control strategy can ensure that the attitude error and the angular velocity error of spacecraft converge to a small area near zero even when some actuators fail completely. This paper investigates the attitude fault-tolerant stabilization problem for a spacecraft subjected to its actuator effectiveness loss, inertia uncertainties and space disturbances. A novel Iterative Learning Sliding Mode Observer (ILSMO) is proposed to reconstruct the actuator effectiveness factors robustly and accurately by combining the P-type iterative learning algorithm with the sliding mode approach. Based on the reconstructed fault signals, an Iterative Learning Sliding Mode Controller (ILSMC) is designed to guarantee the closed-loop spacecraft attitude fault-tolerant stabilization by compensating for its lumped disturbance. The ILSMO and ILSMC stabilities are guaranteed using the Lyapunov direct approach, respectively. This article presents an adaptive fault‐tolerant tracking control for uncertain robot manipulators. By fully considering the effects of uncertainties and actuator effectiveness faults, an integral sliding manifold with a novel auxiliary function is first proposed for tracking control of robot manipulators. Then, a novel fault‐tolerant tracking control based on the proposed integral sliding manifold is developed to acquire robustness in both reaching and sliding phase. In order to further reduce the effects of uncertainties on tracking performance, an adaptive law is performed to estimate unknown parameters of the upper bounded uncertainties, which further reduces the control torque input in case of the similar tracking performance. The stability of the proposed approaches is accomplished by Lyapunov stable theory and homogeneous technique. The key contributions of the proposed approach are as follows: (i) the reaching phase of sliding mode control is removed completely in the control design and then the tracking system enters the sliding mode from the initial states; (ii) the nominal control term is eliminated in the design of integral sliding surface and then the algebraic loop problem is also avoided in the proposed approach for robot manipulators; (iii) the simple control structure with an adaptive law is obtained better tracking performance by utilizing lower control torque input and then the effects of time‐delay and computational burden are also restrained from the proposed approach. In this paper, the issue of event-triggered optimal fault-tolerant control is investigated for input-constrained nonlinear systems with mismatched disturbances. To eliminate the effect of abrupt faults and ensure the optimal performance of general nonlinear dynamics, an adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) algorithm is employed to develop a sliding mode fault-tolerant control strategy. When the system trajectories converge to the sliding-mode surface, the equivalent sliding mode dynamics is transformed into a reformulated auxiliary system with a modified cost function. Then, a single critic neural network (NN) is adopted to solve the modified Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman (HJB) equation. In order to overcome the difficulty that arises from the persistence of excitation (PE) condition, the experience replay technique is utilized to update the critic weights. In this study, a novel control method is proposed, which can effectively eliminate the effects of abrupt faults while achieving optimal control with the minimum cost under a single network architecture. Furthermore, the closed-loop nonlinear system is proved to be uniformly ultimate boundedness based on Lyapunov stability theory. Summary: Tandem rotor helicopter is configured with two main rotors distributed along the longitudinal direction and without anti‐torque tail rotor. Therefore, the control strategy of tandem rotor helicopter can be quite different from that of traditional helicopter systems. In this article, a fault‐tolerant attitude tracking controller is presented for tandem rotor helicopter, with considerations of external wind disturbance and internal actuator problem. First, attitude control oriented dynamic model of the tandem rotor helicopter is constructed, in which both actuator fault and saturation are involved. Base on statistical characteristics of practical wind condition as well as aerodynamic properties of the helicopter rotors, a detailed wind load model is further established. Then, a fault‐tolerant attitude tracking controller is proposed for the tandem rotor helicopter system by incorporating nonsingular terminal sliding mode control with an adaptive super twisting algorithm, which allows a simultaneous regulation of the three angular motions via two propeller rotors. Finally, based on Quanser's 3‐dof helicopter system, comparative simulation tests are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness as well as advantages of the proposed fault‐tolerant controller design. In this article, a fault-tolerant control method based on augmented improved extended state observer and non-singular high-order fast terminal sliding mode is proposed for a class of second-order systems with actuator faults. First, the initial peak of the traditional extended state observer is avoided by improving the structure of the observer. Second, the total disturbance and its change trend are observed simultaneously, so as to better realize the compensation of total disturbance. The convergence of the observer is proved theoretically. In addition, by designing non-singular high-order fast terminal sliding mode surface, the sliding mode variable converges rapidly during the whole process to improve the algorithm's rapidity. Finally, the chattering of control signal caused by sliding mode control is greatly reduced using high-order sliding mode technology, and the stability of the whole closed-loop system is proved by Lyapunov criterion. This paper presents a comprehensive study of model-based fault diagnosis (FD) and a fault-tolerant control (FTC) scheme for sensor and actuator faults of turbojet engines. For actuator FD, an unbiased estimation scheme with a modified Kalman filter (KF) was developed. For sensor FD, two approaches, the generalized likelihood ratio with robust KF and the pseudo actuator model with modified KF, were investigated in a comparative study. For fault detection and isolation, test statistics are commonly employed to detect fault behavior. For FTC, integral-type sliding mode control using control reconfiguration and the reconstruction of the sensor signal was adopted with the FD schemes. In this study, a fault-tolerant super-twisting sliding mode controller with a control allocation system for a quadrotor aircraft is proposed. Super twisting sliding mode control is a robust control technique that handles a system with a relative degree equal to one. A super-twisting sliding mode controller is proposed because of its robustness to uncertainties and perturbations. It increases accuracy and reduces chattering. A control allocation algorithm is developed to cope with the actuator fault. Firstly, a nonlinear model of the quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is presented. Then, the controller design and type of the actuator fault are explained. The control allocation algorithm is used to optimize the trajectory tracking performance of the quadrotor in the presence of an actuator fault. A control allocation algorithm is an effective approach to implementing fault-tolerant control. When actuator faults are identified, they can be modeled as changes in the B matrix of constraints. Various simulations have been made for situations with and without actuator failure. In normal conditions, the quadrotor can accurately track altitude, roll, pitch and yaw references. In faulty conditions, the quadrotor can follow the references with a small error. Simulations prove the effectiveness of the control allocation algorithm, which stabilizes the quadrotor in case of an actuator fault. Overall, this paper presents a novel fault-tolerant controller design for quadrotor aircraft that effectively addresses actuator faults using a super-twisting sliding mode controller and control allocation algorithm. This paper designs a robust control system for wind turbines using a fuzzy sliding mode controller. Due to the increasing use of wind turbines and the importance of reliability and efficiency of these systems, in this paper the tolerance of wind turbine system using a combination of classical nonlinear and intelligent control methods against the occurrence of possible faults has been investigated. The wind turbine system based on the permanent magnet synchronous generator has been studied in this paper. In the design of the fault tolerant controller, a combination of the sliding mode controller based on advanced exponential acquisition law and fuzzy system is employed and the control goal is to track the reference input when the system is under fault conditions. Also, the designed controller is able to reduce the chattering phenomenon. To evaluate the performance of the proposed control system, simulated faults with different characteristics such as amplitude, occurrence time and dynamic change speed have been developed. Results confirm that the designed controller is robust against to actuator faults in the wind turbine system. Also, the output voltage is perfectly set to the constant reference value.

Summary: A novel adaptive predefined‐time tracking control algorithm is proposed for the Euler–Lagrange systems (ELSs) with model uncertainties and actuator faults. Compared with traditional finite‐time and fixed‐time studies, the system output tracking error under the proposed predefined‐time controller converges to a small neighborhood of zero in finite time, whose upper bound is exactly a design parameter in the control algorithm. For the uncertain model, radial‐based function neural network (RBFNN) is utilized to approximate the continuous uncertain dynamics. To deal with the actuator faults, an adaptive control law is involved in the fault‐tolerant controller. In order to achieve the predefined‐time bounded, a novel predefined‐time sliding mode surface is designed. It is proved that the tracking error vector trajectory of closed‐loop system is semi‐globally uniformly ultimately predefined‐time bounded, and the upper bounds of both the system settling time and the corresponding output tracking error can be adjusted with a simple parameter. Control systems that ensure robot operation during failures are necessary, particularly when manipulators are operating in hazardous or hard-to-reach environments. In such applications, fault-tolerant robot controllers should detect failures and, using fault-tolerant control methods, be able to continue operation without human intervention. Fault-tolerant control (FTC) is becoming increasingly important in all industries, including production lines in which modern robotic manipulators are used. The use of fault-tolerant systems in robotics can prevent the production line from being immobilized due to minor faults. In this paper, an overview of the current state-of-the-art methods of fault-tolerant control in robotic manipulators is provided. This review covers publications from 2003 to 2022. The article pays special attention to the use of artificial intelligence (AI), i.e., fuzzy logic and artificial neural networks, as well as sliding mode and other control methods, in the FTC of robotic manipulators. In this paper, an adaptive modified sliding mode control approach is developed for attitude tracking of a nano-satellite with three magnetorquers and one reaction wheel. A sliding variable is chosen based on finite-time convergence of the nano-satellite attitude tracking error and avoiding the singularity of the control signal. The control gain of the proposed method is developed adaptively to reduce the tracking error and improve the closed-loop control performance. The sliding variable and adaptive parameter are also employed in the reaching phase of the control law to decrease the chattering phenomenon. In addition, the finite-time convergence of attitude variables in the presence of actuator faults, inertia uncertainty, and external disturbances is proved using the extended Lyapunov theorem. The simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed method according to different evaluation criteria. This paper investigates an improved adaptive sliding mode fault-tolerant control strategy for a magnetorheological semi-active suspension system with parametric uncertainties and actuator faults. Using the experimental data collected by a quarter-vehicle test rig, an adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system is employed to establish a learning-based magnetorheological damper model firstly. The Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy approach is introduced to deal with the uncertainties of sprung mass and pitch rotary inertia and then the corresponding Takagi-Sugeno faulty semi-active suspension system is constructed. An adaptive sliding mode fault-tolerant controller is proposed, in which the magnetorheological damper fault gain is observed by the designed estimation law, and the asymptotical stability of the system is further analyzed. Ocean currents, mechanical collisions and electronic damage can cause faults in an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), including sensors and thrusters. For such problems, this paper designs a fault-tolerant controller that is independent of the results of the fault diagnosis. An adaptive reaching law is developed based on sliding mode control to shorten convergence times. For the chattering phenomenon, a weighted hyperbolic tangent function is adopted instead of the traditional sign function in sliding mode control. Simulations are carried out when thruster and sensor fail under the condition of ocean current disturbance, model uncertainty and sensor noise. Comparative simulation results show that the proposed method can accelerate the convergence speed of the state point and improve the trajectory tracking effect of the AUV. Consequently, the effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed.

In this paper, aiming at the actuator fault-tolerant trajectory tracking problem of two-wheeled differential-driven mobile robots, a super-twisting fractional-order sliding mode fault-tolerant control method combined with a fault observer is proposed. The method not only ensures the pose tracking of the robot in normal condition but also guarantees the tracking performance while the fault occurs. The proposed method mainly includes: A fractional-order sliding mode surface which improves the transient response is utilized to design the fault-tolerant controller, and the super twisting reaching algorithm is adopted to reduce the chattering; A fault observer is designed to estimate the fault value, ensures system stability and safety through real-time compensation. Finally, the proposed fault-tolerant control method is verified by numerical simulation. The results show that the method proposed in this paper can effectively reduce the impact of actuator fault and ensure trajectory tracking performance. And the advantage of the control strategy over the general sliding mode controller is that compared with the integer-order sliding mode control (IOSMC), the fractional-order sliding mode control (FOSMC) we designed in this paper converges all the error states to zero faster, and the tracking error chattering is smaller. In this article, a sliding mode control (SMC) is applied to regulate the delivered power of a symmetrical six-phase induction generator. For this, the SMC strategy associated to the field-oriented control strategy is used in order to adjust the inner current loops of a squirrel cage six-phase induction generator (SC6PIG). In this way, the control algorithm switches between positive and negative feedback according to the position of the operating point in the phase plane. This technique guarantees the robustness of the SC6PIG in case of the loss of one to three stator phases or machine converter legs. The switching line slope and the initial operating point have been set so that the system starts with a negative feedback, then it continuously switches back and forth to positive feedback in order to maintain the desired trajectory of the system. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and the robustness of this technique since the delivered power of the SC6PIG presents the same dynamics in healthy or faulty modes with one to two phase losses. Safety and critical applications employ fault-tolerant control systems (FTCS) to increase reliability and availability in the event of a failure of critical components. Process facilities may employ these technologies to cut down on production losses caused by equipment failures that occur on an irregular or unscheduled basis. Air–fuel ratio (AFR) adjustment in the fuel system of internal combustion engines (ICE) is crucial for enhancing engine efficiency, saving fuel energy, and safeguarding the environment. This paper proposes a novel hybrid fault-tolerant control system (HFTCS) for controlling the AFR in ICEs that combines the features of both an active fault-tolerant control system (AFTCS) and a passive fault-tolerant control system (PFTCS). The fault detection and isolation (FDI) unit is designed using fuzzy logic (FL) as part of an AFTCS to give estimated sensor values to the engine controller when the sensor becomes faulty. Super-twisting sliding mode control (ST-SMC) is implemented as part of a PFTCS to maintain AFR by adjusting the throttle actuator in the fuel supply line under faulty conditions. Lyapunov stability analysis is also performed to make sure that the system remains stable in both normal and faulty conditions. According to the results in the Matlab/Simulink environment, the suggested system stays robust and stable during sensor faults. In faulty situations, it also maintains the AFR at 14.6 without any degradation, and a comparison with previous studies is carried out. The study shows that the suggested approach is an innovative and highly dependable solution for AFR control in ICEs, preventing engine shutdown and output loss for higher profitability. In this paper, a novel fault-tolerant control tactic for robot manipulator systems using only position measurements is proposed. The proposed algorithm is constructed based on a combination of a nonsingular fast terminal sliding mode control (NFTSMC) and a novel high-speed third-order sliding mode observer (TOSMO). In the first step, the high-speed TOSMO is proposed for the first time to approximate both the system velocity and the lumped unknown input with a faster convergence time compared to the TOSMO. The faster convergence speed is obtained thanks to the linear characteristic of the added elements. In the second step, the NFTSMC is designed based on a nonsingular fast terminal sliding (NFTS) surface and the information obtained from the proposed high-speed TOSMO. Thanks to the combination, the proposed controller–observer tactic provides excellent features, such as a fast convergence time, high tracking precision, chattering phenomenon reduction, robustness against the effects of the lumped unknown input and velocity requirement elimination. Especially, the proposed observer does not only improve the convergence speed of the estimated signals, but also increases the system dynamic response. The system's finite-time stability is proved using the Lyapunov theory. Finally, to validate the efficiency of the proposed strategy, simulations on a PUMA560 robot manipulator are performed.
