The article brings together and discusses forty-seven Semitic proverbs attested in cuneiform texts from Early and Middle Bronze Age Syria (forty-four from Old Babylonian Mari and three from Early Syrian Ebla). They are further divided into proverbs introduced as a t?ltum - "(popular) saying" - or directly quoted in letters, and proverbs dealing with the natural world (animals, plants) or with human society. A short commentary on the Ebla text ARET XIII 19 is also offered

The paper deals with four small bilingual lexical lists, TM.75.G.2199, 2202, 2300 and 2318 = MEE 4 82, 84, 85 and 86, found at Tell Mardikh (Syria), ancient Ebla, in Archive L.2769 of the III millennium BC royal palace. A new edition of each text is provided, followed by a philological and lexical commentary and by indexes of the writings and of their interpretations.
