Several South African poets in exile and at home found inspiration in the tragic events at Soweto. A critic at Wisconsin made a similar observation of Daniel Kunene’s poem ‘Soweto’. The terror of Sipho Sepamla’s South African landscape is poignantly portrayed precisely through the simplicity of language, the at times inverted sentence structure which further creates the impression of an awkwardness with the English language. Sipho Sepamla had, hitherto, avoided writing ‘poetry conscripted for the victims’. His poem ‘Like a Hippo’ must, at first glance, appear to the Western reader as the work of a child. The poet’s anger is contained with poise and does not spill over into a bitterness, a vituperation.

This article aims to reassess recent and continuing analyses of Soweto poetry that merely confirm it as a product and expression of a Black Consciousness vogue. Discussing works by Mongane Serote, Sipho Sepamla, James Matthews and Njabulo Ndebele, I argue that although Black Consciousness ideas of self-respect and self-assertion are unmistakably included, this canon is situated within a profoundly complex historical and social context. Adopting Steve Biko's alternative definition of a ‘national culture’, I argue that Soweto poetry is a medial literature. This oeuvre creates a dialogue between common binary constructions of race, agency, culture and locale, and therefore becomes a factor in the creation of Black Consciousness and not simply its reflection.

This chapter explores the complexities and contradictions of Soweto Poetry as written by some of its leading voices: Mongane Serote, James Matthews, Njabulo Ndebele, and Sipho Sepamla. Penfold discusses their respective relationships to the English language and analyses their profoundly different poetic styles. In doing so, this chapter argues against the use of the term ‘anti-poetics’ when discussing Soweto Poetry. Penfold also examines how race and ideas of generational conflict are represented by each of these poets. He shows how these two topics support his initial claim that Soweto Poetry did not merely reflect Black Consciousness ideology but rather helped shape the movement’s thinking.

Explanations of meaning-making generally prioritise intrapersonal processes. Although making meaning is an intrapersonal process, it is also strongly influenced by person-context interactions and cultural positioning. Nevertheless, the meaning-making literature has paid scant attention to how such interactivity and positioning shape meaning-making. In this article, we highlight the compound character of resilience-promoting meaning-making. To this end, we recount the instrumental cases of Ntando's and Sipho's resilience. The accounts of these black South African students’ positive adjustment to adversity richly illustrate how their lived experiences of a social ecology stimulated multifaceted meaning-making processes. In particular, Ntando's and Sipho's interpersonal experiences and Africentric worldviews gave rise to and/or moderated positive re-appraisal, revisioned goals, purposeful direction, application of spiritual beliefs, identification of benefits, sense-making and reflective problem-solving. Scanning electron and light microscope observations are presented of Biddulphia brittoniana Kain & Schultze, B. heteroceros Grunow and B. multicornis Grunow. All these species possess unusual modes of chain formation, including entangling spines and clasping of the external tubes of the rimoportulae. The three species are transferred to Cerataulus Ehrenberg based on their loculate valve structure, rows of areolae with internal foramina and external groups of fine pores interrupted by spinules and locular walls, the presence of ocelli pointing away from the apical axis, and of a sipho marginalis. Observations on C. turgidus (Ehrenberg) Ehrenberg, the type species of this genus, are also provided, and the generic description is emended. Morphological features that separate Cerataulus from Pleurosira (Meneghini) Trevisan, Odontella C. Agardh and Zygoceros Ehrenberg are discussed. The overall good preservation of the materials examined here also provides new insights into the structure of the sipho marginalis.

This article argues for sustaining a tension between fixed and dynamic views of language in the policy arena: between a valuable striving for order and a clear-sighted openness to actual behaviour and what it portends. Three contextualised instances of language behaviour in multilingual situations are explored to suggest the range of strategies which may inform actual behaviour. A fundamental distinction is that while languages may be legally equal, with important implications for institutional practice, they are never socially or culturally equal. Their status in any society is keyed to the specific ways and specific realities of that society and to the range of contexts within which they may be used. This theme is pursued in relation to arguments from Nigeria and Singapore and to a substantial body of work on multilingualism undertaken in Flanders. John Kani'sNothing But the Truth(2002) dramatizes South Africa's collective confrontation with its traumatic past – played out on the public stage most visibly in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) hearings – through the personal situation of Sipho Makhaya and his family. This essay analyses the obstacles Sipho and his daughter face in their attempts to negotiate new identities within the shifting social and physical geographies of post-apartheid South Africa. Identities in the apartheid era were rooted in specific places and socio-spatial configurations that are now being radically and rapidly transformed; Kani's play implies that this transitional moment in the country's history provides the opportunity to rewrite the codes that determine the ways that space is produced and used, and in the process to alter the ways that people form identities and memories in relation to both social space and other people.

Stephen Gray's volume of interviews reflects a convergence of his oppor? tunities and his interests. It is organized chronologically and the earlier interviews are longer and more focused in their exploration of writers' work and ideas. Of the first twelve writers (Nadine Gordimer, Dan Jacobson, Guy Butler, Douglas Livingstone, Sipho Sepamla, Fatima Dike, Alan Scholefield, Ross Devenish, Doris Lessing, Jeremy Cronin, Gcina Mhlophe, and Dennis Brutus), all but three were, when interviewed, resident in South Africa. Professor Malegapuru Makgoba and Professor Sipho Seepe, while serving as the acting Vice-Chancellors of the then University of Natal (now the University of KwaZulu-Natal) and of Vista University, respectively, were authorised by the Minister of Education at the time, Kader Asmal, to produce a document that charted the way forward for transformation in higher education. This responsibility, assigned to Kader Asmal by the State President, Thabo Mbeki, was delegated to Makgoba and Seepe within the framework of regular interactions with the State President (Seepe, 2004). Thus it would appear that the attempt toward drawing up the agenda for educational transformation took place within a broader political project. The resultant paper appeared as a key chapter “Knowledge and Identity: An African Vision of Higher Education Transformation” (Makgoba & Seepe, 2004) in the book Towards an African Identity in Institutions of Higher Learning edited by Seepe (2004). My paper, which had its genesis in an invitation to present a paper at the launch of the book, is based on a critique of Makgoba’s and Seepe’s essentialist notion of an African identity and their call to replace the Eurocentric with the Afrocentric.

A study of late Cretaceous material has led to a re-assessment of some species resulting in the description of a new genus Praetriceratium based on Eupodiscus lineatus Barker & Meakin. A second species has been transferred to the genus, Praetriceratium inconspicuum (Rattray) PA. Sims, previously placed in Fryxelliella by Prasad in Prasad et al. (1977). Two other new combinations, Pseudauliscus oculatus (Greville) P.A. Sims and Eupodiscus churchii (Hanna) PA. Sims have been made. The generic limits of Eupodiscus, Triceratium, Pseudauliscus, Praetriceratium and Fryxelliella are discussed together with comments on the genera Auliscus, Rattrayella, Glyphodiscus and Neohuttonia.

Examination of the holotype of Sipho gaini Lamy, 1910, attributed by recent authors to the genus Chlanidota (Buccinulidae), revealed that this species belongs to the genus Belaturricula and is a senior synonym of Belaturricula antarctica Dell, 1990. A redescription of the shell, anterior alimentary system, and radular morphology of Belaturricula gaini is provided. The genus Belaturricula is transferred to the family Conidae (sensu Taylor et al. 1993) on the basis of its radula, which is composed of hollow marginal teeth. The presence of a large shell, prominent operculum, acinous salivary glands, radular teeth with narrow bases in B. gaini, as well as the absence of buccal lips and rhyncodeal introvert, all indicate affinities with the conid subfamily Clathurellinae. Because the radula of Pontiothauma ergata Hedley (1916) is nearly indistinguishable from that of Belaturricula gaini, we reassign Hedley's species to the genus Belaturricula as Belaturricula ergata (Hedley, 1916).

The Grade One achievement of 2046 South African children bearing traditional African names was compared with that of 1019 children from the same schools who were enrolled under English names. Results suggest that children bearing English names did significantly better in two of four subjects (Home Language and Mathematics) regardless of whether they were at school in an urban or rural context. For the remaining two subjects (Wealth and Religious Education), urban children bearing English names significantly outperformed urban children with traditional names. Consideration is given to the possibility that the marks teachers assign to children might in some way be influenced by the child's name type. Home and demographic variables are also explored but are of little assistance in explaining the results; the only significant difference is that children bearing English names-i.e, those faring better in Grade One-tend to have mothers with fewer years of schooling. Home and demographic variables do not, therefore, provide any obvious explanation for the results.

An illustrated glossary of terms used in the analysis of the shells of recent and fossil foraminifera supplemented by a rigorous selection of terms that facilitate an understanding of their biology and their use in ecology and biostratigraphy. The glossary includes some 650 entries illustrated by 83 - often composite – figures many of which are stereographs or 3D models. A taxonomic index lists the 140 taxa illustrated.

From the sandy intertidal of Tucker's Town Cove, Bermuda, the following free-living nematodes are described: Paracomesoma inaequale sp. nov., Comesoma bermudense sp. nov. and Sabatieria migrans sp. nov.; the two last named belong to the most abundant nematode species of the sand flat. In some individuals of Paracomesoma inaequale and Sabatielia migrans the tip of the tail had been broken and the wound subsequently healed. Hence Sabatieria conicauda Vitiello, 1970,is possibly based upon specimens with broken tails. A new species Comesoma chilense sp. nov. is established for nematodes included by Wieser, 1954, under the name Comesoma minimum Chitwood, 1937. Comesoma sipho Gerlach, 1956,is transferred to the genus Paracomesoma Hope & Murphy, 1972.

The purpose of this study is the reconstruction of the system of the South African novel during 1981 by means of the comparison of three novels and their reception. The three novels are Op die rug van die tier by Anna M. Louw, A ride on the whirlwind by Sipho Sepamla and July's people by Nadine Gordimer.

Sipho Sepamla was in a subdued state of mind. Before coming to the USA he had received news that his novel, A Ride on the Whirlwind, had been sucked into the great ‘black hole’ of South African censorship. The book was published in June; in September it was banned. Sepamla had not even been informed officially. His novel simply ceased to exist. His publishers had ‘just picked up the news in the papers’.
