In smart grid communications, home area network (HAN) plays an important role in managing data transmission among communicating devices through a smart meter. Performance of the network depends on the efficiency of modulation schemes used in the communicating devices such as rectangular quadrature amplitude modulation (RQAM) and Gaussian minimum shift keying (GMSK). Saleh-Valenzuela (S-V) and Weibull fading channels are appropriate models for indoor communication channels. Average symbol error rate (ASER) and average channel capacity (ACC) performance of indoor dynamic HANs with communicating devices using RQAM and GMSK are analyzed for these channel models. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effect of traffic intensity, number of active devices in HAN, and the modulation types with parameters of practical interest. Performance of device-to-device communication using selective decode-and-forward relaying is analyzed in mixed two-wave with diffuse power and Nakagami- $m$ fading channels. A relay that successfully decodes the source information forwards it to the destination. The destination device combines the direct message signal from the source and its copy via the relay using maximal-ratio combining. Novel closed-form expressions for exact and asymptotic average bit error rates are derived. Furthermore, diversity order, the coding gain, and the optimal power allocation factor are obtained for better system insights. The analysis has been verified through Monte Carlo simulations. Error performance of a $L$-branch selection combining (SC) receiver is analyzed over independent and non-identically distributed Nakagami- $m$ fading channels. A novel exact closed-form expression for average symbol error rate (ASER) for general order rectangular quadrature amplitude modulation (RQAM) scheme is derived using cumulative distribution function based approach. Further, exact closed-form ASER expressions for differentially encoded quadri-phase shift-keying (DE-QPSK) and $\pi/4$-QPSK modulation schemes have been presented. Performance of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) scheme in two-wave with diffuse power (TWDP) fading environment is analyzed. Closed-form expressions for the exact average symbol error rate (ASER) of general order rectangular QAM (RQAM) and cross QAM (XQAM) schemes are presented using moment generating function of TWDP fading distribution. Obtained ASER expressions are in the form of Appell's (Φ_1(·)) and Lauricella's (Φ_1^(3)(·)) hypergeometric functions which can be numerically evaluated using either integral or series representation . Further, closed-form expression for the nth order moment of the received signal-to-noise ratio is derived. Numerical results show excellent agreement with simulation results. Performance of an L branch maximal ratio combining (MRC) receiver has been analyzed in equally correlated η-μ fading channels. For the combiner output signal-to-noise ratio, analytical expressions for the probability density function, moments and outage probability have been obtained. For the MRC receiver, expressions for the average bit error probability for binary, coherent and non-coherent modulations have been presented. Numerical results have been plotted to illustrate the effect of fading correlation and diversity order (L) on the receiver performance. Performance of an L-independent branch and a dual correlated branch, selection combining (SC) receivers are analyzed over Hoyt fading channels. Exact analytical expressions, for the probability density function (PDF), moments and outage probability of the combiner output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and average bit error rate for binary, coherent and non-coherent modulations are obtained for each type of SC receiver. Upper bounds on the truncation errors of PDF expressions containing infinite series are obtained too.
