A wavelength filter using a pair of one‐dimensional photonic crystal (1D‐PhC) waveguides incorporating cavity sections for one‐directional output is reported. The small number of holes for 1D‐PhC is used to attain distinct transmission peaks in the stop band. Two cavity sections are used to obtain peak with steep slope and widened top. Polarisation independent silicon waveguide wavelength filter using Bragg grating with chirped period is reported. The polarisation rotation and filter peak with wide flat top response is obtained. Polarisation‐independent Bragg grating wavelength filter with high diffraction efficiency using silicon waveguide is reported. An antisymmetric grating structure with groove at the top surface of the waveguide is used to generate the polarisation rotation Bragg diffraction. The concept was verified by simulation. An Si wire array waveguide grating wavelength demultiplexer fabricated using immersion ArF lithography is reported. The tilt directions of the input and output star couplers are aligned in the same direction to avoid phase error generated at the curved waveguides. Silicon arrayed‐waveguide grating using rib‐waveguide multimode interference coupler at the array and slab waveguide interface is reported. Si wire arrayed‐waveguide grating is reported using local rib waveguide generating multimode interference at the array and slab waveguide interface. An 8ch device with 100 GHz channel spacing showing 1.2 dB insertion loss is obtained. Interposers for inter‐chip interconnects should perform stably under high‐temperature conditions and rapid temperature change due to the heat generated by mounted large‐scale integration (LSI) chips. Athermal silicon optical interposers integrated with quantum dot lasers and other temperature‐insensitive components on a single silicon substrate are demonstrated, and error‐free data links at 12.5 Gbit/s operating from 25 to 125°C are achieved without any bias adjustment. Since maximum junction temperatures in most LSIs have been below 125°C now and will be in the future, the interposers are tolerant of heat generated by LSIs, and are suitable for inter‐chip interconnects. A Si wire arrayed waveguide grating designed to reduce the noise and transmission peak width and avoid systematic phase error generated at the curved waveguides is reported.
