No empirical study has systematically investigated the role of power imbalance in sexual harassment and assault within the Chinese college and university context. Addressing this gap, we used search engines, news media, and social platforms to collect 93 publicly reported real-world cases of sexual harassment and assault by men against women at Chinese colleges and universities up until the end of 2023. We coded these cases for general characteristics, power status of perpetrators and victims, severity of sexual harassment and assault, and the post-incident behaviours of the victims, the perpetrators, and their colleges/universities. The results demonstrated that features of the power imbalance between perpetrators and victims were significantly associated with the behaviour of the victims, perpetrators, and colleges/universities after the assault. Specifically, the victim being single and in an isolated environment predicted greater severity of the sexual harassment and assault. The prominence of the perpetrator's administrative position predicted a greater likelihood of the victim denouncing the perpetrator after graduation rather than before graduation. The lower the economic status of the victim's family, the higher the ranking of the college/university that employed the perpetrator, and the perpetrator's membership in the Communist Party of China (CPC) predicted a greater tendency for the perpetrator to deny allegations of harassment and assault. Finally, the perpetrator's membership in the CPC and the higher the ranking of the college/university predicted the tendency for the college/university to obstruct the victims' rights. Overall, these findings underscore the ways in which features of the deeply rooted power imbalance between male perpetrators and female victims shape responses to sexual harassment and assault within Chinese colleges and universities. Purpose: To understand the position of female academics in public universities in Egypt, the authors of this paper aim to answer the question of what comes between victims breaking their silence about workplace sexual harassment (WSH). Design/methodology/approach: A qualitative research method is employed, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 40 female academics from four public universities selected from among 26 public institutions of higher education in Egypt. Thematic analysis was used to extract main ideas from the transcripts. Findings: At the macro level in Egypt, stipulating an anti-harassment law and harsher penalties were found to be a motivator for female academics to speak up against WSH. At the meso organizational level, establishing anti-harassment units in universities is perceived as an effective mechanism for empowering female academics to respond to, expose and seek punitive action against WSH perpetrators. What was found to be a real challenge to reporting perpetrators is the assumption of some female academics that they will never be heard because of socio-cultural norms that hold university professors as honourable and impeccable. Another challenge is that female academics are poorly represented at both professorial levels and in senior administrative positions in Egyptian academic contexts. Sadly, challenges faced by women in academic contexts, such as WSH, are not being prioritized on the agenda of their universities. Although organizational behaviours and country-specific culture challenge female academics' proactive stance against WSH, new anti-harassment laws and university policies are changing this scenario. Originality/value: This paper contributes by filling a gap in human resource (HR) management, higher education and public administration in which empirical studies of WSH in academic contexts have been limited so far. This paper details the pervasiveness of gender-based violence (GBV) that women in Saltillo, Mexico experience when using public transport. Using a mixed-method approach that included a survey (N = 611) and interviews (N = 11) with transit users and a local women's rights activist, we explore the experiences of violence that women face as an everyday reality, together with issue of re-victimization, and the psychological effects that violent episodes can have on women who experience them. Adding to existing knowledge about GBV in spaces of transport, we argue that women can experience myriad wide-reaching effects beyond the event itself that include not only limits on their mobility, but also financial and emotional repercussions. Ending gender violence against girls in South African schools is an ongoing challenge. In this paper, we report on findings from focus groups and in-depth interviews that explore girls' accounts of gender violence in a South African township high school. Our findings illuminate the normalization of violence instigated by boys against girls: such violence is highly sexualized and complex in its manifestations. Girls were sexually harassed, subjected to violence and sexual coercion by their male peers in different spaces at school. Beyond simplistic binary positions through which girls are constructed as merely victims, some girls in the study engaged in the problematic discourse of victim-blaming; girls who frequent school spaces dominated by boys and girls who use drugs, such as dagga, were often stigmatized and blamed for the violence they experienced. Furthermore, evidence of female-on-female violence (fights and humiliation) that occurred in the context of heterosexual competition came to light during the study. This kind of violence reinforced the subordination of girls in the broader hetero-patriarchal system. Sexual harassment in public places of Pakistan is a social problem. In Pakistan, a good number of studies have been conducted on sexual harassment of women; however, they are based in educational institutes and the workplace settings. This research examined the gender and city-wise difference among the victims of sexual harassment. The sample was 452 victims (197 men and 255 women) with age ranging from 16 to 40 (M = 22.29, SD = 3.83) collected from different public places of three major cities of Pakistan including Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore. The results indicated that women fall victims of sexual harassment more as compared to men. Results also indicated that men are the major perpetrators of committing sexual harassment. This study also reinforces the idea that men also experienced sexual harassment in public places of Pakistan and further research is needed to explore the experiences of sexual harassment. The recent #MeToo movement empowered female sexual harassment and assault victims to publicly share their stories, using social media as the primary platform. Though the goals of the movement included de-stigmatization and support for victims, the discourse that followed often resulted in highly varied responses to reported incidents. In this study, we examined American adult (n = 512) perceptions about #MeToo and whether gender and ideological beliefs, including sexism, religiosity, and political affiliation, as well as pre-allegation likability of the alleged perpetrator, influenced respondents' assessments of the incidents. We focused our examination on two very different, high-profile examples of sexual misconduct allegations, specifically against film producer Harvey Weinstein and comedian Aziz Ansari. We found that personal characteristics of respondents related to individuals' negative assessments of alleged sexual assault perpetrators. Regression analyses showed that higher age and stronger beliefs that sexism exists in our culture predicted harsher judgments of Weinstein, but stronger beliefs that sexism exists in our culture, male gender, lower levels of pre-allegation favorability for Ansari, and higher levels of social religiosity predicted harsher judgments of Ansari. Dalits belong to the lowest caste in India; they are excluded from the four-fold Varna system of Hinduism, treated as fifth Varna "panchama", and characterized as "untouchables", and, consequently, they have historically and culturally suffered caste-based social exclusion from their civil and political rights. There are more than 200 million Dalits in India, and Dalit women constitute half of this population, which is about 16.3% of the total female population of India, and of this population, about three-fourths of women live in rural areas2. Dalit women's problems are not only related to gender and economic deprivation but also discrimination related to caste, religion, and untouchability, which in turn leads to the denial of their social, economic, cultural, and political rights. Many scholars believe that Dalit women's problems are unique and distinct in many ways as they suffer gender bias, caste discrimination, and class deprivation simultaneously. They are considered vulnerable to sexual violence and exploitation due to their gender and caste. They face a higher degree of violence most prominently in rural areas by the upper caste Hindus. This paper analyzes Dalit women's lives and tries to explore the real factors and situations in which Dalit women become objects of sexual exploitation and violence. A sample of 210 respondents from Delhi and outside Delhi was selected for this study. Factor loading has been used to explore the factors that determine sexual violence against Dalit women. The research employs the Pearson correlation method to explore the relationships between the variables and the regression method to investigate the intersectionality of caste, class, and gender in terms of sexual violence. The data reveals a correlation between caste, class, and gender as factors regarding sexual violence against Dalit women, and it shows that caste's influence is much greater than class on gender. The metoo and timesup movements aim to raise awareness of several gender inequalities across many sectors in many countries. In newsrooms, issues include sexist attitudes, gendered norms, and various forms of sexual harassment and abuse. This survey focused on news personnel from Kenya, South Africa, and Nigeria to identify ambivalent sexism, perceptions of newsroom equality, and personal experiences of sexual harassment. Nigerian participants had the highest levels of hostile (antipathy for women) and benevolent (belief in traditional gendered roles) sexism. Overall, men had higher levels of hostile sexism and perceived newsroom equality. Experienced newsroom sexual harassment was: 77.5% of women and 29.7% of men in Kenya, 57.5% of women and 11.4% of men in South Africa, and 38.1% of women and 10% of men in Nigeria. Given the hierarchical nature and structure of field schools, enrolled students are particularly susceptible to harassment and assault. In 2018, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) released recommendations to help prevent sexual harassment and assault of women in academia. Although these recommendations are specific to higher education and exclusive to women, some can be modified and applied to the context of archaeological field schools. We review the NASEM's recommendations, with particular attention to those applicable to the field school setting, and provide suggestions for making field schools safer and more inclusive learning environments for all students. Although we present recommendations for practices that can be implemented at field schools, additional research is needed to understand how sexual harassment occurs at field schools and how the implementation of these recommendations can make learning safer. The goal of the present study was to treat street harassment as a public health issue akin to sexual harassment in terms of its negative effects. Anxiety and depression were hypothesized to be mediators of the effect of street harassment on sleep quality. Fully 252 female undergraduate students at a large U.S. Northeastern university were surveyed. Findings indicated that street harassment was positively related to anxiety and depression as well as negatively related to sleep quality. Mediation analyses indicated that both anxiety and depression mediated the relationship between street harassment and sleep quality. Implications for health interventions are discussed, such as the need to address street harassment experiences in college women when creating interventions aimed at reducing anxiety and depression and at improving sleep quality. The study examines the use of immersive journalism, journalistic storytelling using Virtual Reality, as a tool to promote knowledge, empathy, and change in views and opinions on the phenomenon of sexual harassment among men and women. Testimonies of employees reporting workplace harassment were adapted into a screenplay. The screenplay presented ongoing verbal sexual harassment of an employee by her manager, filmed from the victim's point of view by the use of a 360-degree camera. In a controlled experiment, change in attitudes on sexual harassment and empathy toward the victim were compared between participants consuming the content as either a written script, 2-dimensional screened video or 360-degree, 3-dimensional immersive virtual reality experience. The results point to an interaction effect, where a decrease in stereotypical views of sexual harassment was predicted by gender (men), method of consumption (immersive), and assessment of the effectiveness and emotionality of the content. Purpose: We report on the extent of sexual harassment among residents and examine its relationship to specialty and program year and effects.Methods: Using the C-Change Resident Survey, we surveyed residents in 34 internal medicine, pediatrics, and general surgery programs in 14 academic medical centers (AMCs). A total of 1708 residents completed the survey (70% response-rate); 51% (n = 879) were women. Respondents reported unwanted sexual comments, attention, or advances by a superior or colleagues within the last 2 years. Measures of vitality and ethical or moral distress were included in the surveys.Results: Rates of sexual harassment reported by women differed across the 34 programs, with an interquartile range of 0%-11%. Residents in pediatrics had the lowest frequencies of sexual harassment (mean 2%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0%, 4%). Residents in internal medicine had higher rates of sexual harassment (mean 7%, 95% CI 1%, 25%). Residents in surgery had the highest rates (mean 12%, 95% CI 2%, 33%). Sexual harassment was associated with lower levels of vitality and higher ethical or moral distress (both, P <0.05).Conclusions: Sexual harassment is more common for women residents in Internal Medicine and Surgery programs. Sexual harassment in professional fields can hinder economic development globally. The epidemic of sexual harassment within the law profession has created a hidden barrier, predominantly for females. This study seeks to examine the effect of Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act 2013 (In.) (SHWWPPRA) among the legal professionals in India to determine whether sexual harassment affects the profession and whether sexual harassment is gender-biased. Empirical and descriptive research methods were adopted by administering questionnaires to three hundred and forty-seven (347) legal professionals. The results revealed that 57.1% of the total respondents did not think that the SHWWPPRA is significantly enforced, and 71.6% of 204 male and 83.2% of 143 female respondents viewed sexual harassment as a hindrance to the growth of the Indian legal profession. This study seeks to improve our understanding of how sexual harassment, whether personal or using new technologies, affects young women under 30 years of age in Europe. First, the definitions of various harassment types are reviewed, and their characteristics analysed. Subsequently, we summarize recent studies on the subject that reflect how harassing behaviours are increasingly supported by new technologies. In a practical section, based on the latest data on gender violence supplied by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, we separate behaviour typical of traditional harassment, face-to-face harassment and online harassment. To improve the analysis and description of both types of harassment by age, three indicators are developed: (1) prevalence (2) intensity of sexual harassment (3) proximity to the aggressor. Particularities of online harassment include its prevalence among younger women, greater intensity and less proximity to the aggressor, although the statistics are only significant for higher prevalence and less proximity. The study explores the phenomenon of street harassment and its socio-psychological implications on women living in the capital city of Islamabad, Pakistan. Street harassment represents a form of gender violence that violates human dignity by making the female victims feel vulnerable and insecure in public spaces. The findings have been compiled on the basis of empirical analyses of the views of 200 female students from eight different universities of Islamabad, Pakistan. The study reveals that objectification, street harassment and abuse are incontrovertible parts of women's lives in Pakistan. Despite constituting more than half of the population in the Pakistan, women continue to live in a patriarchal milieu that thrives on harassment, discrimination and oppression against them in both public and private spheres. The study concludes that the menace of street harassment entails devastating emotional, physical and psychological impacts and recommends that policy interventions be undertaken to curb this heinous act perpetrated against women. Domestic work is seen as low and impure occupation mainly performed by women and children, whose lives are still dominated by a caste system that assigned people his/her place in the society. Domestic work has a long history in India with both men and women working in others homes as servants. Women working as domestic workers are mostly socially and economically backward. The present paper has been written in order to understand the socio-economic conditions of women domestic workers in India. Also, the paper will throw light on various other problems like health, child rearing and sexual harassment faced by women domestic workers in India. This study seeks to understand which socio-demographic variables explain bystander readiness to help (BRH) among a diverse (via race/ethnicity) sample of college students. This study uses an intersectional approach by investigating how gender intersects with variables, specific to a college student population (e.g., class level, college of major, sexual harassment on campus), to influence readiness to help. The results are from a survey about campus climate experiences, which includes a stratified random sample of college students from a large Southwestern university in the United States, with 964 respondents. We conducted bivariate crosstabulations, comparisons of means, and multiple regressions. The multiple regression analyses illustrate that for women, the single most robust relationship with BRH is experiences with sexual harassment. For men, the strongest correlate is being a student within the college of liberal and fine arts. The practical and research implications of these findings are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sexual harassment is undergoing an identification revolution, as more victims choose to forego their anonymity and divulge their identity to the public. Research in social psychology on the identifiability effect has found that identified victims typically generate more empathy and support than unidentified ones. However, this research has been limited largely to monetary donations or to unambiguous cases with uncontested facts; the scholarship has not examined the effects of varying the identifiability of both parties to a conflict. In three large‐scale experiments with a representative population (total N = 3,988), we found that in the context of sexual harassment, victims do not gain an identifiability "premium"—whereas offenders do. Offenders identified by their first name only are regarded as more credible and moral and less blameworthy and responsible for the event than unidentified offenders, but the same does not apply to identified victims. Furthermore, when the offender is identified, fewer people perceive the case as involving sexual harassment (Experiment 1), and support for taking measures against the offender declines (Experiment 2). Finally, the identified offender premium exists for offenders of both sexes, but the detrimental effect of identification on victims is moderated by the victim's mode of identification. Specifically, identified female victims who stated willingness to disclose their name publicly fared worse than those preferring that their name not be revealed in public, and the difference between active and passive identification reversed for male victims. The effect of identification mode is moderated by sexist beliefs (Experiment 3). Our results have normative implications for the appropriate balance between publicity and anonymity in various contexts, including social networks, the media, and disciplinary and judicial tribunals. Intimate partner violence against women (IPV) and sexual harassment are both widespread. Research on their causes and attitudinal correlates has rarely examined implicit, automatic cognitive associations related to the partner (in IPV aggressors) or to women (in sexual harassment offenders). The aim of the present research was to study these implicit associations in 129 male German students. Participants completed scales of hostile sexism (HS), masculine gender role stress (MGRS), short-term (STMO) and long-term mating orientation (LTMO), and proclivity to both IPV and sexual harassment. Next they performed a primed lexical decision task that measured whether concepts of violence, power, hostility, and sexuality were differentially associated with representations of women, men, and the participant's own intimate partner. Results showed that implicit associations of own partner with violence as well as hostility were generally high but did not correlate strongly with the proclivity measures. Furthermore, the proclivity measures were positively predicted by HS, MGRS, and STMO, whereas LTMO negatively predicted IPV proclivity. Practice implications point to the need to address early socialization processes that may shape men's negative associations with female partners. Binu Tamta, a lawyer, filed a writ petition in 2013 in the Supreme Court against the Delhi High Court and others, which raised the question of formation of Internal Complaints Committees in courts too as per the Visakha judgement guidelines. The Supreme Court accepted and approved the regulations formulated and also directed that the regulations be sent to all the high courts so that "they too may formulate their own regulations in the same manner." Sexual harassment is a persistent problem for women in the workplace. Prior research has explored the effects of sexual harassment on the psychological, physical and economic wellbeing of the victims. Despite the extensive research exploring the causes, most studies focus on micro‐level factors, and few studies examine the role of macro‐level factors on sexual harassment in the workplace. Using public Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) data and a separate dataset of individual level workplace sexual harassment complaints, we test two hypotheses about sexual harassment in American workplaces. First, we show that the decline in workplace sexual harassment complaints has been uneven, with African‐American women experiencing an increased relative risk of sexual harassment in the workplace, even as overall reported harassment complaints are down. Second, we show that economic threat — operationalized in this case through unemployment rates — drives increases in sexual harassment of women in American workplaces. While the data on harassment complaints is limited, data strongly suggests that the changes are driven by shifts in underlying levels of harassment, rather than changes in the likelihood of reporting harassment. Sexual harassment in the workplace remains a less legislated concept in Botswana. In particular, Botswana's labour legislative framework does not adequately speak to how sexual harassment in the workplace ought to be handled. Despite this, international law characterises sexual harassment as a form of discrimination and a form of violence against women. The absence of specific laws on sexual harassment makes the burden even more difficult for women employed in Botswana's private sector to seek justice against colleagues and/or employers who sexually harass them. This article discusses violence against women at work in 1930s Lithuania. Critical analysis and interpretation of primary historical sources (archival documents and workers’ press) illustrate the main forms of violence experienced by women in the workplace, i.e. bullying and sexual harrassment, and show the impact of a negative workplace environment on women’s lives and society in general. A short case study of one factory in Kaunas, which was the temporary capital of Lithuania at that time, will help to gain a deeper knowledge of sexual harassment and other violent acts at work, and will also show how these issues were dealt with in interwar Lithuania. Over the last two years, awareness about the sexual mistreatment of women has stunned the world. According to analysis by the New York Times, the defeat of Hilary Clinton and election of Donald Trump spurred a women’s movement in the US that began in November of 2016 and resulted in protests across the country, including the largest single-day protest in history on January 21, 2017. Later that year, the #MeToo movement (starting in October 2017) and subsequent #TimesUp movement (starting in January 2018) galvanized women to unite against sexual assault and sexual harassment, which has become the hallmark of the current women’s movement. But has anything changed over this time period in regard to the sexual harassment of women? Using a repeat cross-sectional survey from over 500 women collected at two points in time (September 2016 and September 2018), we found reduced levels of the most egregious forms of sexual harassment (unwanted sexual attention and sexual coercion) but increased levels of gender harassment in 2018. More importantly, sexual harassment had a weaker relationship with women’s negative self-views (lower self-esteem, higher self-doubt) in 2018 compared to 2016. Qualitative interviews collected from women in the fall of 2016 and in the fall of 2018 from the same women, support the quantitative data. They suggest that the changes in sexual harassment are due to the increased scrutiny on the topic. This work aims to analyze the legal impacts of dissemination of songs on the Internet that makes apology for sexual harassment against women. It also seeks to understand the social context in which this manifestation arises and to ascertain whether a crime has taken place within the lyrics that describe and exalt the sexual assault against women. Finally, the legislation on civil and criminal liability of providers for the dissemination of obscene content will be analyzed from a digital age viewpoint, pointing out an alternative to adapt the law that does not result in cultural repression, to avoid hate speech. As the reach of global business operations increases, cultural context will likely influence the nature and amount of sexual harassment workers experience. Surprisingly, little is known about sexual harassment in Russia, an attractive target for expanding companies. To address this gap in the literature, we examine Russian workers' perceptions of sexual harassment severity through the lens of cultural context. In particular, we examine the sexual harassment severity perceptions from the perspective of both targets and perpetrators. Results indicate that as targets of sexual harassment, Russian women and men held similar sexual harassment severity perceptions. However, as perpetrators, Russian women reported perceiving the harassment they committed as being less severe than the reports of Russian men. Further, among both targets and perpetrators, Russian women held less permissive sexual attitudes than Russian men, with this difference mediating the relationship between participant sex and perceived sexual harassment severity: women perceived greater severity than men because women hold less permissive sexual attitudes. Eve-teasing or sexual harassment of women in public places is one of the most challenging social problems in both rural and urban India which deprives them of basic human rights. The constitution of India has granted equal rights to both men and women but still women face extreme discrimination and violence and thus occupies low status in Society. The study was conducted in Karnal and Sirsa districts of Haryana state. From these districts two blocks namely Indri from Karnal and Bada Gudha from Sirsa district were selected randomly. From the selected blocks, four villages namely Kheri Maan Singh and Jain Pura Sidhana (Indri) and Biru wala, BurjBhangu (Bada Gudha) were drawn randomly. From the selected villages, 200 respondents were also selected randomly. Interview Schedule was prepared to collect the desired information as per objectives of the study. Overwhelming majority (81.39%) remained silent, 55.81% gave verbal threat to accused and 16.27% complained to parents. Likewise, 11.62% each complained to the parents of accused and slapped/hitted the accused. In both regions maximum numbers of respondents remained silent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although humor is a relatively common communication interaction, it has multiple functions. This article examines the discourse about sexual harassment and humor using the tension-centered approach. Using data from 20 in-depth interviews of men and women working in manufacturing, I explored themes about the use of humor, sexual harassment, and organizational tension. Analyzing the data within the tension-centered approach revealed strategies male participants used to manage sexual joking in highly masculine work environments with women present. Results indicated that the male participants reinforced the notion that manufacturing is male space by using humor and used exclusion and regendering to manage the tension that arose during exchanges of particularly crude sexual joking. This article analyses the sexual harassment that girls and young women are exposed to in the spaces of nightlife. The objective is focused on learning the possible risks, as well as the experiences and perceptions concerning gender violence, and specifically sexual harassment, which take place in nightlife spaces, while also analysing strategies and possibilities for change. The methodology used is qualitative, with 24 in-depth interviews with people between the ages of 16 and 22. The results show a discourse of illusory equality in nightlife spaces: boys/young men can have an explicit sexuality, whereas girls/women must respect some unwritten rules on the use of public space, times and places. Boys/men normalize harassment as one more aspect of nightlife. Differentiated group strategies are developed, both of intimidation and defence. Girls/women identify dangers or "black spots". We conclude that girls/women are afraid of being sexually assaulted, and that males use sexual harassment as an exercise of power, perpetuating a gender-differentiated social mandate in spaces of nightlife. Maynard Wiertalla is a Corrections Shift Supervisor 12 (Lieutenant) for the Michigan Department of Corrections DOC). He is accused of sexually harassing a male subordinate, who alleged that Lt. Wiertalla touched him inappropriately more than 300 times over 12 years. The DOC interviewed the subordinate and staff members as part of its investigation, revealing that the inappropriate physical contact took the predominant form of prodding and poking with fingers in the ribs or stomach, or grabbing of the upper thigh or crotch area, often by surprise. Lt. Wiertalla admitted to what was described. Witnesses characterized the physical touching as horseplay rather than sexual harassment. This case explores how the DOC disciplined Lt. Wiertalla and defended its disciplinary action on appeal to the Employment Relations Board of the Michigan Civil Service Commission. In Pakistan, cases of sexual harassment are often reported in print and electronic media. Though, harassment Acts and Laws have been introduced but still a vast majority is reluctant to share this issue with friends, colleagues and even families. Therefore this study is designed to explore the reporting behavior of working women towards sexual harassment and to highlight responsive style of families, friends, colleagues and higher authorities on reporting the issue. Respondents were approached through purposive sampling method and data was collected from only those females who experienced workplace harassment at any stage in life. Questionnaire was used as tool of data collection. Results of the study revealed that majority women do not discuss and report the event of sexual harassment. Those who discuss and report receive negative response of family as well as from higher authorities in offices. Results further ascertained the fact that no concrete action is taken against perpetrators and if someone reports it, they did not find any satisfactory response on it. Majority respondents showed dissatisfaction upon the action taken. The government needs to properly execute women protection bills and laws in true spirit in order to provide a workplace environment that is conducive to women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Historically, sexual harassment has been treated as a topic of amusement. Most people are inclined to smile at a cartoon depicting a lecherous old man pinching the posterior of his secretary. In the not- too-distant past, sexual harassment has certainly not been treated as a subject for legal concern. Many legal scholars would have agreed with a 1936 Harvard Law Review article which concluded "there's no harm in asking!" Women have occasionally sought damages for mental distress and humiliation on account of being addressed by a proposal of illicit inter- course. If there has been no incidental assault or battery, or perhaps trespass to land, recovery is generally denied, the view being, apparently, that there is no harm in asking. The profound social and legal changes which have taken place since 1936 have reversed the old adage, today there definitely can be harm in asking. In recent years women have become aware of their legal recourse against sex harassment. Although there are alternative courses of action available, most victims of sexual harassment in employment have found that Tide VII of the U.S. Civil Rights Act pro- vides the most adequate remedies.

Across time, in a variety of forms and spaces -from homes and workplaces to digital domains of social media- women have become victims of male dominance. So also are the other vulnerable sections that suffer multi-layered abuse, and endure sexual harassment in social media. Yet, this phenomenon is insufficiently explored. Therefore, this article argues that social media spaces have become domains for sexual harassment and subjugation of women. This article examines gender-trolling on Twitter as a form of sexual violence against women. The Sexual Harassment of women at workplace (Prevention, restriction and redressal) Act, 2013 (henceforth alluded to as the Act) was notified by the Indian Parliament in December 2013. It is framed on the Vishakha Guidelines (Indian Kanoon, 1997) which have filled in as the case law to check examples of lewd behavior at the work environment. The key goal of the Act is to guarantee that women feel harmless at the work environment and to sustain the development of an all-encompassing work system. This paper centers upon the present condition of execution of the provisions of the law to check the cases of lewd behavior at the working environment. This study explored the prevalence of sexual harassment, consequences of harassment, and reasons for not reporting these experiences through a survey among Swedish female university students (N = 1941). One fourth reported one or more incidents of sexual harassment during the 12 months period prior to the survey. Victims were more often younger and with Swedish-born parents compared with nonvictims. Victimization most frequently occurred at clubs or restaurants and the most frequently reported consequences were anger and worry about being victimized again.
